Centerville mothers Gina Schmittdiel and Erin Ribar met three years ago after being connected through the Down Syndrome Association (DSA) of Minnesota.

Gina and her husband Brian have two children, a 4-year-old and soon-tobe 3-year-old Gunnar, who has Down syndrome. They are also in the process of adopting a newborn from the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network.

Erin and her husband Matt have four children ages 7, 4, 2, and 7 months.

Ben, their 2 1/2-year-old, has Down syndrome.

“An employee from DSA reached out to me to let me know a new family had moved into town. I emailed Erin, we met for coffee and we have been hanging out ever since,” Schmittdiel said. In 2017 the mothers began attending a Down syndrome parent group in Blaine. The following year, the two stepped up to facilitate the group, which they are doing again this year with the help of Sana Kassab Soussi from Blaine.

Medical assisting is a ‘great steppingstone’

The average growth for all occupations is 5%.

Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow by 23% between 2018 and 2028, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Oct. 21-25 is recognized across the country as Medical Assistants Recognition Week.

Medical assistants (MAs) perform both administrative and clinical tasks to keep

the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists running smoothly.

MAs can work in clinics, urgent care clinics, blood collection centers, research facilities and insurance companies.

“There is so much that a MA can do, and your opportunities are endless. This is a great steppingstone. You see what you like and what you don't like, and then you move on with your education,” said Lisa Sailor, Anoka Technical College (ATC) MA program director.

Sailor, a resident of Zimmerman, graduated from the program herself in 1999 and has been employed at ATC since 2010. She explained many of the students who have graduated from the program have gone back to school to become physicians’ assistants, ultrasound technicians, radiology technologists, medical lab technicians, surgery technicians and registered nurses (RNs).

Chosen from a statewide pool of applicants, Centerville residents Gina Schmittdiel and Erin Ribar have been accepted into the eightmonth Minnesota Partners in Policymaking leadership training this fall. Participants include adults with disabilities and parents raising children with developmental Gina Schmittdiel disabilities.

Schmittdiel has a son with Down syndrome and delayed development of speech and large motor skills. He receives a range of therapies each week. Schmittdiel volunteers for fundraisers and serves as a board member for the Down Syndrome Association (DSA) of Minnesota.

Ribar also has a young son with Down

syndrome who receives therapy each week for physical, occupational and speech deficiencies. She is involved with the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network Medical Outreach Team.

She is an active volunteer at events with the DSA of Minnesota. Ribar and Schmittdiel lead a parent support group in the north metro.

Luke Peterson and Ellie Russell from Scouts BSA Troop 136 of Centerville won first and third place at the annual Centerville Lions Chili Cook-Off Oct. 5. The two Scouts from the troop made and entered their "Taco Chili" into the contest.

The Scouts prepared the chili as they would do at camp using the skills and methods they have learned in Scouts BSA. They cooked the chili outdoors early that morning using troop equipment under a canopy for protection from the rain. The Scouts cooked a larger batch of chili and will donate several meals’ worth to a local family whose father is battling cancer.

Thanks for freedom editorial I would like to thank Press Publications and editor Sara Marie Moore on her reasoned and “on point” editorial entitled “Liberty” in the Oct. 15, 2019 issue of the Shoreview Press. It is a sad commentary on the state of our country, and the current political and social climate, that a country founded on the hopes and dreams of immigrants is now evidently “too crowded” to welcome new immigrants.

While many arguments are used to explain this apparent change in the values historically associated with our country, it is hard to see much beyond the fear of the “differences” that these new immigrants bring. As Ms. Moore suggests, a sad day indeed for “Lady Liberty”, and a country which has prided itself on providing opportunity for those persecuted and endangered in their countries of origin.

Phase out four-way stops It is time for White Bear Lake to phase out four-way stops and move to roundabouts. Such stops are a relic from a time with low traffic volume and minimal information about effective urban plan-

ning. Ultimately, they are archaic, inefficient and dangerous. Surely every driver, certainly during busy periods, is fed up with the bizarre, uncomfortable and often stressful ritual that the four-way stops demand. Roundabouts are easier to navigate, far more efficient by keeping cars moving and much safer. The transition could be done with modest expense: roundabouts, in most cases, require only a small concrete circle in the center of the road and some additional road markings.

Get your REAL ID early ST. PAUL — Minnesotans with standard driver’s licenses or identification (ID) cards are strongly encouraged to consider applying for a REAL ID, so they’ll be prepared ahead of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s full REAL ID enforcement date of Oct. 1, 2020.

Every air traveler 18 years of age or older will need a REAL ID, enhanced driver’s license or ID, passport or passport card or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States or enter federal facilities beginning Oct. 1, 2020. A standard Minnesota driver’s license will not be accepted for federal use as of that date, but it will still be a valid form of identification and valid for lawful driving privileges.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services division (DPS-DVS) wants to make sure anyone who needs a REAL ID as of Oct. 1, 2020, has one in hand.

“We want all Minnesotans to have the required identification to board an airplane next year,” said Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington. “Less than 10 percent of all Minnesota driver’s license and ID card-holders have a REAL ID-compliant card right now. We know there are people in this state who will need a REAL ID and don’t have one yet. We want to reach those people and make sure they know exactly what they need to do to get a REAL ID-compliant card.”

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards. The Act refers to federal anti-terrorism laws and regulations that control access to federally regulated commercial aircraft and federal facilities requiring identification to enter, such as military bases or nuclear power facilities.

"REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the accuracy of driver's licenses and will greatly improve aviation security," said Minnesota TSA Federal Security Director Cliff Van Leuven. "We highly recommend that Minnesotans who plan to travel by air upgrade their standard driver's license to a REAL ID or enhanced license before the deadline."

"I can't emphasize enough how important the October 2020 deadline is for Minnesotans who fly for work or pleasure," said Brian Ryks, CEO of the Metropolitan Airports Commission. "Our hope is that no one who shows up for a flight a year from now will have to be turned away because they don't have the right kind of identification. We will work with the federal Transportation Security Administration and Minnesota Department of Public Safety officials over the course of the coming year to help get the word out to the flying public - it's time to get REAL ID-compliant identification."

Any eligible Minnesotan can apply for a REAL ID now, but there is a fee in addition to the standard cost of the license or ID card. It depends on how early you renew:

$2 for a renewal up to 17 months before expiration; $4 for a renewal 18-29 months before expiration; and $6 for a renewal more than 29 months before expiration.

When renewing early, four years will be added to the license or ID card’s original expiration date, so while an early renewal will cost a little more, the license or ID card will be valid for a longer period of time. The early renewal option is only for those who renewed their Minnesota driver’s license or ID card before REAL IDs were available on Oct. 1, 2018. Their licenses must also expire after the full enforcement date of Oct. 1, 2020.

A REAL ID is not needed to drive, register to vote or to apply for federal benefits.

Required documents for REAL ID Minnesota’s new driver services system, which launched in 2018, features an online pre-application tool at driverservices.dps.mn.gov/EServices/_/. Minnesotans can provide a significant amount of information online before they arrive at a driver’s license office. The tool also includes a list of required documents for each license type.

Minnesotans are required to provide additional documentation when applying for a REAL ID, compared to a standard driver’s license or ID card.

A person must provide the following in person when applying: • One document proving identity, date of birth and legal presence in the United States.

• One document proving social security number.

• Two different documents proving current residency in Minnesota.

Applicants must provide original documents or documents certified by the agency that issued them. Laminated documents will not be accepted. Digital documents shown on your phone or other electronic device will also not be accepted. A full list of accepted documentation is on the REAL ID website at dps.mn.gov/divisions/ dvs/real-id.

Bring on the trick-or-treaters

T

his will be my husband and my first year in Hugo for Halloween. We are hoping it is more eventful than when we lived in Oakdale.

There, we were lucky if we got one or two trick-or-treaters.

While our new home was being inspected, our inspector who lives in the area told us to get ready to buy bags and bags of candy because he never seems to have enough.

I always enjoy seeing all of the costumes each year. Of course my favorite is when the human trickor-treaters bring their four-legged Out & companions. This year, our corgi Twinkie will be dressed up as a About unicorn and our German shepherd Frosty will be a donut. We plan to Shannon get some doggy treats too, just in Granholm case we spot some dogs looking for handouts.

Halloween brings its challenges for dog owners. Every time the doorbell rings, the dogs seem to think the world is ending.

Unfortunately, our dogs won’t be able to show off their costumes and hand out the candy and treats with us. I will just have to take pictures to prove that they let me put the costumes on.

Each year I also enjoy looking at all of the decorations around town. I am always in search of people who go all out.

Last year I really enjoyed writing the article, “Pumpkin mania a family affair” about Lino Lakes residents Ami and Jason Furchner and their children who live on Arrowhead Drive. In a tradition that stretches back more than 40 years, hundreds of pumpkins are gutted the Friday before Halloween and then family, friends, neighbors and strangers spend the next day carving. The pumpkins are then arranged on risers and lit up with different colored Christmas lights.

If you know someone in our coverage area who has a unique story like this one, we would love to hear about it.

It seems like nowadays more and more people are attending special events such as Trunk or Treat rather than going door-to-door to trick or treat.

Growing up, I remember eating Papa Murphy’s pizza, getting all dressed up and heading out into our big neighborhood to collect candy. After a while, we would have to head back home to dump out our candy and then head out for some more.

At the end of the night, I remember dumping out all of our candy on the living room floor to check out what we got. My parents made us check every piece to make sure it was still intact in its packaging and there was nothing suspicious. Of course they stole some pieces, too.

I hope you all have a fun, safe and warm Halloween.

Maintaining the balance: kids, weight and health

n a society full of mixed messages, especially when it comes to weight and eating, parents, kids and healthcare professionals alike can feel the pressure of maintaining and promoting physical health. What seems like a simple concept, eat a balanced diet and get regular exercise, becomes increasingly more complicated with new food trends, the influence of social media and varying recommendations regarding health and nutrition.

Movers & So, how can you help your child Shakers when it comes to weight and Heather develop a positive relationship with Gallivan food?

It can be a bit of a balancing act but one thing we know is that, dieting is not the answer – especially for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines in 2016 stating that dieting not only doesn’t work, but that it can be a risk factor for both obesity and eating disorders in children and adolescents. Comments or teasing about weight can also increase the risk of being

overweight or developing an eating disorder.

That is why the recent release

by Weight Watchers of a weight loss app, Kurbo by WW, targeted at children between the ages of 8-17 is particularly concerning.

The app uses food tracking – categorizing food as green, yellow or red – and includes before and after “success stories,” complete with images of children before and after using the app.

These food tracking practices can encourage feelings of guilt and shame around foods, and we know that associating guilt with foods can make those foods harder to resist and lead to overeating. In addition, having before and after images presents an unrealistic measure of success, and promotes thinness as the ideal body type – when we know health can come at any size.

In general, there is not a lot of scientific evidence that dieting works for long term weight loss for people of any age. The approach for children and adolescents should focus on overall health, wellness, and long term healthy lifestyle behaviors including balanced eating and physical activity. Here are some tips that can help children develop a positive relationship with food that focus on overall

health and wellness: 1. Steer clear of talking about diets, weight or weight loss in the home, including your own.

2. Eat together as a family as much as possible.

3. Go on walks and try other physical activities together as a family.

4. Do things that promote positive body image such as: appreciating all that your body does for you; help your child see themselves as a whole person and not just a number, be a critical viewer of media and social media, remind kids that people come in all shapes and sizes and make a list of positive things about yourself.

5. Talk to kids about how they feel about themselves and food.

In addition to these tips, it is important to develop a relationship with a pediatrician and have your child receive regular well child visits. That way any major changes in health can be monitored and addressed appropriately.

I am the only one on the Lino Lakes City Council that you will not see on the ballot this year. I care about our city, and the right experience matters for our city.

Council member Rob Rafferty has my confidence that he will become our new mayor for Lino Lakes. His experience in city government matters.

Just like you can’t learn to ride a bike on YouTube, you can’t be a good mayor unless you attend City Council meetings.

There are no other candidates running for mayor that have attended in person.

Rafferty’s heart for the northern Lino Lakes is impressive. He is the best person for mayor because of his efforts to help the neighbors in Arena Acres. Also, his time spent at American Legion volunteering with their programs is also impressive.

Mike Ruhland, a current Planning and Zoning board member, has my vote. His new ideas and experience with land issues will be very beneficiary.

He has a good heart for our city and his motivations are to help. I endorse him for Lino Lakes City Council election.

The ballot will allow you to vote for two candidates, but a single vote for Ruhland will be what I will do to make sure he gets in.

I want to thank Jeff Reinert for his 20 years of humble service to Lino Lakes. He will be missed greatly in city leadership. His conservative ideas and experience with Lino Lakes city government will be exponentially expanded by sharing him with Anoka County government. Paid Letter: Taking power into their own hands I wish to comment on the Anoka County Commissioner, District 6 race. One of the candidates is Cindy Hansen, former mayor of Spring Lake Park until July 1. She resigned that night to relocate, six months into her new term as mayor. Lino Lakes was her destination. In September, one of the Council members of the city of Lino Lakes sent me an email with her bio for North Metro attached. The Council person was doing fact finding and wanted to know how Hansen claimed to be a resident of Lino Lakes for six years, while being our Mayor in Spring Lake Park during the same time?

She claimed to be a homeowner for six years, and she also made it appear, since she did not name the city that she was the mayor of Lino Lakes.

In her bio, Spring Lake Parks’ name was not even mentioned.

Three weeks later, in a televised interview for North Metro she talked about her husband who found his “monster garage” in 2013. The garage is an airplane hangar on Lino Lakes private airfield with attached home. She further stated, now using the city of Spring Lake Park, Administrator Dan Buchholtz told her she could continue as Spring Lake Parks’ mayor if she spent 51% of her time in Spring Lake Park. Question, where did she sleep? In a Statutory City, an official must live within the boundary. It is interesting Dan Buchholtz has that kind of power to allow this woman to continue for several years without the knowledge of the City Council, or the residents who paid her. She appointed Dan to his job six years ago,

Paid Letter: Elect Jeff Reinert for Anoka County Commissioner Over the last few years as the manager of the American Legion Post 566 in Lino Lakes, I have been able to get to know Mayor Jeff Reinert through his volunteering at the post and his membership in the Sons of the American Legion.

Jeff often volunteers to cook and clean in the kitchen when needed and for a few years in our dunk tank to help raise money during Blue Heron Days.

While at the American Legion, he worked with members to form the Lino Lakes Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network and continues to work on raising money for the Lino Lake Vets War Memorial. I believe he is truly dedicated to doing what is right for our community.

I am also a resident of Lino Lakes and appreciate what Jeff has done for our city to make sure we get great city services while making sure taxes stay under control. Jeff has been on the city council for 20 years and he will be missed as our mayor, but his experience will serve all of us well when he is elected to represent us as our next Anoka County Commissioner.

Paid Letter: Vote Cavegn for fresh ideas and new leadership As a retired deputy fire chief from the Centennial Fire District, I spent 30 years protecting the cities of Lino Lakes, Circle Pines and Centerville. Much of my time was invested in training and having our department ready for a multitude of hazards and emergencies. Lino Lakes now has a public safety department staffed with dedicated men and women charged with that responsibility. Those professionals require the support of the city leadership and the funding required to perform day-to-day activities as well as emergencies safely and efficiently. Residents are entitled to a reasonable level of safety and security in the city they live and pay taxes in.

I believe Tony Cavegn has the ambition, urgency and knowledge required to support the mission of the public safety department. In my discussions with Tony during the Lino Lakes separation from the district, Tony expressed to me the importance of department readiness and safety. I fully support Tony as mayor for the city of Lino Lakes, as I believe he will lead the city to positive changes and openness to citizen input. A multitude of campaign signs around the city does not make a candidate a good fit for a job. Good character, positive attitude, ambition and fresh ideas do.Vote Tony Cavegn for Mayor.

Cougars thump Osseo 42-21, head into grid playoffs 6-2

Two defensive touchdowns, and two more from the prolific Zulk-to-Anderson connection, helped the Centennial Cougars beat Osseo 42-21 in the regular season finale Wednesday evening.

The Cougars take a 6-2 record and No. 10 ranking into the Class 6A playoffs. Seeded No. 2 in Quadrant 3, they will host No. 7 Stillwater on Friday, 7 p.m.

On the fourth play, an alert Jake Pierson had a gift-wrapped touchdown fall into his hands. An Osseo back fumbled the ball up in the air when tackled by Garret

Strating, and cornerback Pierson snagged it on the run with 36 yards of open field in front of him.

Connor Zulk heaved touchdown passes of 42 and 11 yards to Carter Anderson on the Cougars’ first two possessions and they led 21-7 at the first stop.

That’s 10 times they’ve struck for six this year and 17 times in their careers.

The Cougars got oneyard touchdowns from Austin Wlaschin in the second quarter and Noah Larson in the fourth.

Timothy O’Neill capped it off with a 44-yard interception return.

The Cougars lost three fumbles in the second half to keep the game

fairly close.

“That’s the only way they stopped us,” coach Mike Diggins said. “We only punted once. Our defense played well again but we gave them short fields. Osseo has good athletes, and they are all juniors. They will be a good team next year.”

The Cougars fumbled on the first play in the second half and the Orioles scored on the next play. Later in the period, Zulk broke a 70yard run but fumbled on the six.

Osseo, moving the ball mainly on passes, trailed 28-21 early in the fourth quarter but the Cougars responded with a 17-play, 10-minute drive to open a 35-21 lead. Then O’Neill’s

The Cougars tied for first in their district with a 5-1 record, same as Totino-Grace and Champlin Park.

Zulk gained 86 yards in 10 carries. He competed three of six passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns, all to Anderson. Wlaschin

gained 72 yards in 23 carries, Larson 50 yards in 12 carries and O’Neill 50 yards in four carries, as the Cougars averaged 6.6 yards per rush.

Another shutout, and Moua goal, send Cougars back to ’state’

Chalee Moua had to watch Centennial’s first 14 matches from the sideline, recovering from a ruptured achilles tendon suffered last April, a tough situation for a senior co-captain, who made the all-state tournament team last season.

But the tenacious midfielder returned to action five games ago — and will play in another state tournament. He’s a big reason for that, delivering the lone goal as the Cougars beat Andover 1-0 in the Section 7AA finals Tuesday, Oct. 15.

“To be able to come back like this, it feels amazing,” Moua exclaimed.

Said coach Jeff Ottosen: “He is a spectacular player.

It was great to get him back.”

Moau’s bullet just under the crossbar in the 47th minute was all the Cougars needed. This is a team for whom one goal is a mountain. The Cougars posted their 12th shutout in 19 games. They outscored three

section foes 9-0, and have yielded just three goals in the last 14 games.

“We have a great defensive group,” Ottosen acknowledged. Asked how they do it, he said, “Style and structure. We do things that other teams don’t that makes it hard to score on us.”

The Cougars will take a 17-2 record and 14 straight wins into the school’s second consecutive state tournament and third overall. They won Section 5AA last year and were moved to 7AA this year.

Seeded No. 5, they will open Wednesday, Oct. 23, against No. 4 Minneapolis Washburn (15-3-1), at Chicago Lakes, 7:30 p.m.

Other pairings are No. 1 Edina (19-0) vs. Maple Grove (13-3-1), No. 2 Eastview (16-2) vs. St. Paul Central and No. 3 East Ridge (15-2-1) vs. Lakeville South (10-7). If the Cougars win, they will face Edina or Maple Grove in the semifinals Tuesday, noon, at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Andover (15-3-1) beat the Cougars 1-0 at home Aug. 27, which gave them the Northwest Suburban Confer-

ence title by a half-point over the Cougars and the top seed for sectionals, meaning hoke field, significant because they play on grass and the Cougars play on turf. “We are much better on turf,” Ottosen said. Plus the footing was slick on a cold, moist evening.

Moau’s goal came when he suddenly found the ball at his feet, deflected by Will Miers, with a clear shot from about 15 yards. He drilled it just above the leaping goalie’s reach. “The ball was deflected to me and I had the opportunity and I just shot,” he said about the second goal of his five-game season and biggest ever.

Goalkeeper Ricky Hemric and the defense did the rest. “Our guys in the back are really strong and talented and make my job easy,” Hemric said.. “We work so hard all year, and through the summer, to get to this point.”

Andover’s Noah Eklund, who had the lone goal in Andover’s earlier win over the Cougars, just missed on two strong shots late in the game. Said Ottosen: “We are two very even, hard-working teams.”

About the stark contrast between their first Andover game and the second, Harper said, “We switched formations in mid-season. What we had wasn’t working.”

In the first minute after halftime, when her shot from close range was stopped but not controlled by goalie Ava Braun, the Cougar star pounced on the rebound for her third goal of the night and 23rd of the season.

Braun made 10 saves otherwise.

After that, the Cougars hunkered down on defense to protect their twogoal lead in the last 39 minutes, seldom

attacking on the other end.

For Andover (15-4), Kelsey Kallio notched her 19th goal. She was the Cougars’ main focus with midfielder Borden usually marking her.

Cougar senior co-captain Madison Monson said the keys for winning the rematch were “intensity and preparation,” along with “adapting to the grass, which was pretty slippery.”

The Cougars are elated to return to state for the first time since the 2016 team won the state crown. “Oh, my gosh, you just don’t know,” Monson smiled. “We’d lost in the section finals each year since them.”

It was the sixth consecutive section championship match for the Cougars, who have 3-3 record in them. They lost to Maple Grove in the last two seasons after beating the Crimson in 2016. Those were in Section 5AA. The Cougars were moved to 7AA this year.

port group in Mounds View, they decided to find a new location in Circle Pines. The group meets the second Monday of the month, October through May. The meetings consist of a meal, discussion or visits from a guest speaker. Free child care is provided during the meeting from volunteers who are ages 14 and up.

“Our group really likes the parent time. Sitting down together, having a meal, chatting about what is going on,” Schmittdiel explained. “On this side of it, the community is so amazing and supportive, but when you are just getting that diagnosis it feels so heavy and hard. We want to share the positives and amazingness of it.”

Ribar added that, “For a lot of families, getting the diagnosis can be a traumatic experience. It is really helpful (to connect with parents who have been through it) to see where your kid will be. It is nice to be around other parents who get it.”

Currently the group has families that travel from Centerville, Hugo, White Bear Lake, Bethel, Anoka, Ham Lake and St. Paul.

Both Schmittdiel and Ribar are advocates for children with Down syndrome. They were selected from a statewide pool of candidates to attend an eight-month Minnesota Partners in Policymaking leadership training, which started this fall. Schmittdiel serves as a board member for the DSA of Minnesota and Ribar is an active volunteer for DSA of Minnesota events. Ribar is also involved with the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network Medical Outreach Team, where she attends medical conferences as a patient advocate.

“Our meetings are meant for the community, to help strengthen each other, to bounce ideas off each other and support each other on things that are hard because they are, sometimes, and our children aren't always accepted,” Ribar explained. “We just want to build a strong community that will accept them and let our children be the best that they can be because it is better for everyone.”

MEDICAL ASSISTING: Professionals at the heart of health care FROM PAGE 1

accredited, prepares students to assist medical providers with examinations and treatments, conduct medical histories, sterilize instruments and supplies, assist with minor surgeries, perform administrative services and administer medications.

Currently, there are around 75 students in the program who range in age from high school (PSEO) up to adults in their 50s. At the end of the program, students must complete an externship in the field. “Most of our students, if not all of our students, get a job before they even graduate,” Sailor said.

Blaine resident Jessica Dunsmore, 37, will begin her externship next fall.

She was a stay-at-home mother and did part-time work for a family-owned business when she decided it was time for a change in July 2018. “My girls were growing up and I wanted to start doing something to further myself and demonstrate through actions that you are never too old to better yourself or make positive changes in your life.”

So far, Dunsmore said she has enjoyed how hands-on the classes are. “Medical assisting is such a growing field, and the demand just keeps getting stronger. The base pay in rising exponentially. You can use a MA degree as a springboard to nursing, as well, and continue your education while you are on the job at a clinic,” she explained.

After graduation, Dunsmore plans to become a certified medical assistant, or CMA, after she passes the certification exam through the American Association of Medical Assistants.

Zimmerman resident Deanna Ralph, 49, will graduate from the program in the spring. Ralph has always been intrigued by the medical field, as she has spent a lot of time in doctors’ offices and hospitals with both of her children.

“Being a parent of children with health issues and a parent of a child with special needs, the medical field really needs people with empathy,” she said. “That is something that I can offer because I understand if your child is having a bad day or if your child is autistic and they don't want to sit still, or they are afraid.”

She also wanted to prove to her daughter, a junior in high school, that it is never too late to go back to school and graduate. She described the MA program as “fantastic.”

She noted, “You get such a diverse learning, it is hands-on, so you are not just reading about something. You are getting the skills that you need to work in the field — the instructors are fantastic,” she said. “You are not practicing on oranges or gel pads; you are practicing on people ... You can take what you have learned and choose your own path.”

After graduation, Zimmerman wants to continue her education to become an RN. Her dream job, she said, would be at Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare.

Social media alternative ‘off the grid’

“The Horn,” started by local entrepreneurs, is an ad-free social media alternative that doesn't sell your data.

The social media site is fee-based — $30 per year or $3.99 per month, said one of its founders, Jeff Myer, who owns White Bear Glass and lives in Forest Lake.

“Because of that, we don't take any analytics of what is driving people onto our site,” he explained. The site is walled off from the public web and can only be accessed via paid membership.

The site is meant for small groups of people who would like to share photos and information with each other privately, Myer explained. It is a place to share photos with your close friends, in a place your employer isn't going to find, he said. Members can create private groups.

“It's for that more intimate relationship you have with siblings and family members and the three close high school friends you have, and the five close college friends you have,” Myer noted.

The social media site was launched in November last year and has about 1,500 users, Myer said. Users have to be 18 and live in the United States. The site isn't meant to compete with or replace Facebook or other sites but instead offer an alternative. “We have no illusion we are going to replace Mark’s (Zuckerberg) product,” Myer said.

The Horn was started by Myer, his brother-in-law John Podgorak of Mahtomedi, and family friend Jim

Touchi-Peters of Minneapolis. Myer and Podgorak, who owns a utility and excavating company, offer their business sense while Touchi-Peters is the chief creative officer. Eleven people are now involved, all family except for Touchi-Peters.

Touchi-Peters works full-time for The Horn. The site was his idea, which he came up with five to seven years ago when he became fed up with Facebook, he said. He disliked seeing so many ads, posts from friends of friends, and the issues the company was running into with privacy. He left the social media network and began dreaming of alternatives.

Ironically, he is back on Facebook to advertise The Horn, but said he spends as little time as possible on the site. But utilizing the social media giants is one way The Horn hopes to gain more members. “Our goal is to get to 10,000 paid members by our second year,” Myer said.

Touchi-Peters said sometimes people don't understand why there would be a charge for a social media site. “My response to that is Facebook isn't free,” he said. “Facebook takes your data and resells it.” The Horn is protected from search engine indexing, he added. “It's off the grid in that way,” he explained.

“We took all the problems people have accused Facebook of doing and attempted to solve them,” Touchi-Peters said.

The Horn was named after the phone — using the retro word used for the telephone from the ’50s to the ’70s, Touchi-Peters said. More information on the social media site can be found at thehorn.net.

Lillie newspaper group ceases operations NORTH ST. PAUL — The Lillie Suburban Newspaper group ceased operation after the Oct. 2, 2019 issue.

The Lillie family has owned the newspaper group for 82 years.

The newspaper company is the oldest and largest weekly publication company in the St. Paul area, primarily focused in Ramsey County.

Ted H. Lillie, company owner, said it was too difficult to keep operating when advertising agencies have pulled away from print; the changing demographics

of first-ring suburbs has also affected business.

Lillie had a partner, Jeff Enright, who filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in August 2018. He said while it was difficult, they were able to come through that and pay their bills and were beginning to make money again.

The company published eight newspapers in Shoreview, Roseville, Oakdale, Maplewood, New Brighton and St. Anthony, as well as the East Side Review in St. Paul and South-West Review covering South St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights.

Lillie indicated he recently lost his sales manager, who had purchased a business in northern Minnesota after losing interest in managing the sales department.

Lillie and his wife will continue to live in Rochester, where she is on staff at Mayo Clinic.

The office at 2515 Seventh Ave. E. in North St. Paul is closed.

Reports of lung illness, teen vaping rates surge in Minnesota

Once touted as a safer alternative to smoking, vaping has come under increased scrutiny, particularly as reports of lung illnesses potentially linked to the practice have surged throughout both the U.S. and Minnesota.

E-cigarettes (and similar products, known as vapes, vape pens/ sticks, dab pens and e-hookahs) are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale the vapor of a heated liquid, which typically contains nicotine, fl avoring and other chemicals.

Because vaping does not involve inhaling smoke from burned tobacco leaves, it has typically been assumed to be safer than smoking traditional cigarettes. But as the steady stream of recent reports of acute lung disease among regular vapers suggests, “safer” and “riskfree” are not synonymous.

As of Oct. 1, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had confi rmed 1,080 lung injury cases associated with vaping nationwide, including 18 deaths—one of which took place in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has reported 55 confi rmed or probable cases of severe lung injuries tied to vaping.

“The cases of severe lung injuries in Minnesota and other states show how dangerous vaping can be,” Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm said. She also said that health officials are working “aggressively” to gather information and determine the precise cause of such lung injuries.

“One death from this outbreak is one death too many. We are working with partners around the state and the nation to fi nd out everything we can as quickly as we can to prevent additional illnesses and death,” Malcolm said.

Youth vaping rates surge After a decades-long decline, youth tobacco use is up across the country, and survey after survey says that the prevalence of e-cigarettes and vaping are to blame.

The most recent National Youth Tobacco Survey found that almost 5 million youth reported using any tobacco product within the last year, and 3.6 million of those youth reported using e-cigarettes, easily making them the most popular product among high school and middle school students.

Minnesota isn’t immune from these trends, either. According to the 2019 Minnesota Student Survey, one in four 11th graders in Minnesota reported using an e-cigarette in the past 30 days. That represents a 54% increase from 2016’s survey, in which 17% of the state’s 11th graders reported vaping.

The survey likewise found that Minnesota youth are ill-informed about the health risks that e-cigarettes pose. According to the MDH, 76% of 11th graders surveyed said

that there is “either no, slight, or a moderate risk to using e-cigarettes.”

However, as most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive, vaping can lead to nicotine addiction, particularly among youth and young adults, whose brains are not yet fully developed.

“No amount of nicotine is safe for children, and evidence suggests that nicotine interferes with brain maturation and can have long-term effects on cognitive development and mental health,” said Melissa Mady of Tobacco-Free Alliance Minnesota, which recently held workshops in partnership with HealthPartners’ White Bear Lake clinic to educate parents and teens on the dangers of vaping.

In addition to nicotine, Mady said, e-cigarette vapor can also contain carcinogenic chemicals, heavy metals and ultra-fi ne particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.

“E-cigarette aerosol generally contains fewer harmful chemicals than regular cigarettes; however, safer doesn’t mean safe,” she said.

Because e-cigarettes have only been in the U.S. market for about a decade, there is little conclusive research on the dangers posed by longterm use, especially when compared to the dangers posed by traditional cigarettes, which have been studied extensively. Mady said that imbalance is a major factor in the assumption that e-cigarettes are safe.

“We just don’t know if they are as dangerous as cigarettes because (they) are still being studied,” she said. “However, we do know there are chemicals and addictive properties that are dangerous.”

Leaders respond to ‘public health crisis’ The surge in youth vaping rates worry local leaders, and concerns about vaping’s health risks have prompted many cities and counties to pass Tobacco 21 legislation, which raises the minimum legal age for tobacco and nicotine sales from 18 to 21. ClearWay Minnesota, a nonprofit focused on tobacco cessation, reports that approximately 40 Minnesotan cities and counties have enacted such policies.

Within the northeast metro, Forest Lake is the most recent municipality to do so, joining nearby Arden Hills, Mounds View, North Oaks, Roseville and Shoreview in taking extra steps to restrict youth access to vaping products. However, the effectiveness of such policies is mitigated by the lack of similar restrictions in neighboring communities.

“Vaping is a public health crisis for young Minnesotans, and it is critical that we act now to bring the rate down. As a teacher and as a father, I know the fi rst step is making sure our young people understand the risks,” said Gov. Tim Walz in a statement.

“It’s hot, it’s fresh, it’s delicious,� said Grocery Store Fanatics President Donald Ericson as he tasted Kowalski’s fried chicken in Shoreview on a tour of northeast metro grocery stores Oct. 10.

Ericson, of Mora, tours grocery stores across the state in search of great tastes.

One of his signature reviews is the “Fried Chicken Challenge,� in which he tastes a store’s deli fried chicken for heat, freshness and fl avor.

No store has yet failed his challenge.

Ericson, an employee at Cub in Cambridge, takes a day off every couple of months to tour all brands of grocery stores across the state. “He’s like the connector of the whole grocery industry,� said his administrative assistant, Liz Nerud, cheese manager at the

They started the tours two years ago on his birthday, Oct. 10. Last week was the third birthday tour of Cub Foods in White Bear Township, on his 28th birthday. “He likes to get to know people,� said Store Director Steve Szondy.

Rolling out of bed and going out to grab the paper, the rain drops started. But around lunchtime the skies began to clear and out came the sun. The afternoon was wonderful and Sunday too. The rain did return, in large amounts on Monday to start the workweek, as it should. Side Note: Congratulation to friend Randy Fulton on his 33rd Run for the Apples run this past Saturday at Pine Tree Apple Orchard. This was his last as Race Director and will be turning the reigns over to the Rotary Club.

Operation No Limits hosts 5th annual Gala Operation No Limits held itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 5th annual Gala Saturday, Oct.12 at Infinite Campus in Blaine. It was attended by over 180 guests; including Mayor Dave Bartholomay, Anoka County Juvenile Detention Center Superintendent Todd Benjamin, Anoka County Community Corrections Director Dylan Warkentin, Anoka County Probation Officers, Centennial Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s employees, community

members and businesses.

The gala featured fundraising games, silent auction, raffles, entertainment by Gary Larue & Rat Pack Entertainment, photos by Dee Angellis Photography and a presentation by four of the Operation No Limits Kids.

A technology funding campaign was held, which raised over $12,000. The funds will be used to purchase comput-

ers, printers, etc., to help at-risk youth create resumes, seek employment, apply for employment and research and apply for post-secondary education.

garden beds, blue bird houses and more.

Fall Festival at Wargo Nature Center

by Madeline Lowell. She and her sister Samantha collected two frogs and brought them to trained naturalists for identification. The amphibians find shelter for the winter and then internally produce a natural antifreeze to survive in below freezing temperatures.
