Domestic violence survivors share stories of hope BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
Every nine seconds in the U.S. a woman is beaten. One in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, according to the Partnership Against Domestic Violence. “It (domestic violence) is so prevalent and yet it is so easy to dismiss as ‘he was just angry’ or ‘she was just letting off steam’ or, ‘if there isn’t a physical
bruise, than it’s not abuse.’ It is easy to dismiss all the other pieces that make up domestic violence such as emotional abuse, psychological abuse, verbal abuse and financial abuse,” said Alexandra House Communications Marketing Director Tina Bronson. “It’s so important for people to understand that just because it doesn’t look like abuse to you, doesn’t mean it’s not abuse.” SEE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, PAGE 14 & 15

Council keeps an eye on proposed asphalt plant BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

LINO LAKES — City Council members are continuing to keep their eyes and ears open in regards to the proposed asphalt plant on 20th Avenue (CSAH 54) immediately north and adjacent to the Lino Lakes border with Columbus. The council fi rst discussed the topic at its Aug. 28 meeting after resident Norma Heur, who lives on the Hugo/Lino Lakes border, voiced her concerns about possible air, water and noise pollution as well as increased truck traffic generated by the proposed plant. Heur returned to the Sept. 25 meeting to share some updates she had heard on the project with the council. She said the plant was now proposed to include both asphalt and concrete, the truck traffic would go up from 500 trips a day to 1,000 and the plant was proposed to be open 12 hours a day, six days a week with the option of being open 24/7 depending on demand. She added the traffic would be required to leave the plant traveling south right through Lino Lakes and Centerville. At that time, Community Development Director Michael Grochala said he was not aware of any changes regarding the change in activity or increase in traffic and that he had a call in to Columbus to discuss the matter. Mayor Jeff Reinert requested Heur, along with any other residents who wished to discuss the topic further, attend the council's Oct. 2 work session. Reinert also asked city staff to give the council background on the proposed project as well as some options the city may have moving forward.
