Lino Lakes dancer taps her way to New York LINO LAKES — With nine seasons and counting of dance under her belt, local dancer Lauren Hinds has had accumulated many medals, trophies, titles and experiences. Hinds, a sixth-grader at Centennial Middle School, recently competed with her tap dance solo in the Anoka County Fair and State Fair Amateur Talent Contest. Hinds achieved second place at the county level, but was able to advance to represent the county at the State Fair, as the winning duo also won in Washington County and went on

to represent Washington County at the State Fair. She also auditioned directly, to see how she would do, and was selected as one of 30 pre-teens to compete in the semifinals, where she earned first runner-up. “I did it because it was another opportunity to perform,” she said. Jen Hinds, Lauren's mother, said Hinds started dancing at the age of 18 months. “One day after I picked her up from day care, I saw a sign about a music and movement class and I thought it would be fun for us to do,” she said. “The minute

Lauren walked into that studio, my husband said 'I think she is going to be a dancer.' She loved it. Every year I ask her if she wants to try a sport, and she doesn't — she wants to stick with dance.” Hinds is now in her 10th season at Lake Area Dance Center in White Bear Lake. Every year she is there, she wants to pick up more skills and try out new types of dance. This year she plans to compete with 10 different dances, some of which include tap, jazz SEE LINO LAKES DANCER, PAGE 10

LINO LAKES — An ongoing partnership between the University of Minnesota School of Architecture and Anoka County Parks has magnified the educational and experience for youth who visit the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Heritage Lab or YMCA Camp Heritage. Under the guidance of Professor Jacob Mans, 24 graduate students researched, developed and designed three new learning stations in the spring. Students then spent the entire summer constructing the structures, which were completed in early September. Three structures were also completed last year through the same partnership. Heritage Lab, located across the street from the Wargo Nature Center, is an outdoor historical program that is held for four weeks in the fall. Students in grades two through six rotate through nine different stations where they participate in hands-on activities related to a historical theme. This year's theme is Voyageurs, covering the early exploration of Minnesota through the fur trade from the mid1600s through the early 1800s. The stations will benefit the nearly 3,000 children who participate in Camp Heritage and the 1,500 children who attend YMCA Camp Heritage. One thing that was learned from last year's project was it would be beneficial to have structures that could be more easily moved around, which was the goal of the learning station project. “They are designed to be more modular and mobile. They are on trailers, which allows us to move and reposition them how we see fit,” said Eric Vehe, interpretive SEE NEW STATIONS, PAGE 2
