STILLWATER — Nine months after his home was searched, former Councilman Tony Bronk pleaded guilty to six counts of felony theft by swindle. He took an offer from the state that calls for 23 months of prison and $172,000 in restitution to the organization Bronk swindled from 2010 to 2014: the Minnesota State Fire Department Association. He served as secretary/treasurer of the firefighters group during that time. At a hearing last month before Washington County Judge John McBride, Bronk waived his right to a jury trial and accepted an amended complaint from the Ramsey County attorney's office that dropped a check forgery charge.

WYOMING — During a powerboat race, Aaron Wachholz once flipped backward at 100 mph and landed upside down in the water. The impact damaged his boat, but he walked away with only a few scratches and bruises. Both he and his boat raced again two weeks later. The Wyoming businessman said that setback wasn’t enough to stop him from pursuing his favorite hobby: powerboat racing. “I haven’t experienced a single thing in life as exhilarating,” explained Wachholz, founder of Team Tribute Racing. ”Nothing gives me as much of an adrenaline rush as racing my boat, the speed

and just the conditions you race in along with other boats on the water.” His passion for racing is now a huge part of his career as well. The Lindstrom resident, a 1987 Forest Lake Area High School grad, not only has his own boat and auto body repair and custom painting business ( X-Treme Paint Auto Body &Marine in Wyoming) but custom-builds powerboats from scratch. Last weekend (after press time) he raced his own craft in the Ron Baker Senior Memorial Regatta in Forest Lake, suiting up in the v-bottom class and competing at speeds of up to 130 mph. His top racing achievement prior to that was winning the OPC National Championship in the VP-75 class in 2011,

Shane Simpson likens turkey hunting to a game of chess. The White Bear Lake man says bagging a gobbler requires a lot of strategy. It's his favorite animal to hunt because there is a lot of interaction between hunter and bird, he said. He sometimes spends hours luring the same turkey with calls and a decoy, while deciding whether to chance moving closer or to a better vantage point. The chase of the very vocal birds is as rewarding as the kill, he said. Simpson travels the Midwest every spring and fall in search of turkeys. He's also a champion turkey caller and organizes an annual calling contest. And he hosts a website and social media pages where he shares blogs and videos about hunting and calling. His young daughter is also is a medal-winning caller and is aiming to snare her first turkey this spring. His fiancée also is a hunter, although she prefers to chase deer. A hunting question initially posed by his fiancée on a social media site is what sparked their relationship. He's from South Carolina and moved to Minnesota in 2008 to be with her. The move prompted his first calling contest entry and his first videotaping of hunting trips, which prompted him to start a website. He was a frequent hunter back in South Carolina, where there are longer seasons and a five-bird limit. In Minnesota, hunters are limited to one bird per season. After Simpson had claimed his

Minnesota bird but wanted to spend more time in the woods, he started following hunting buddies and filming the excursions. He started a website as a way to share his footage with his hunting companions and so they could share it with their friends. Its audience has grown as his videos have become more polished and his website has added more features including a blog, turkey-calling tutorial videos and a calendar of calling contests. The site — www.callingallturkeys.com — makes a little advertising revenue that helps subsidize Simpson's hunting equipment and travel expenses. In addition to the website, he also shares videos and other hunting resources on a Facebook page (facebook.com/callingallturkeys)

that has nearly 2,700 likes and a Twitter page (twitter.com/callingallturks) that has nearly 500 followers. He now travels to multiple states each season so he can claim more birds. So far this year he's been to Nebraska, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Illinois. He works three 12-hour shifts as a printer at a Little Canada small business, allowing him five days a week for hunting. He films each hunting excursion and, assuming they aren't a bust, posts a 10- to 20-minute video recap online. He usually hunts and stays with a family member or friend or two. X-treme Paint Continued from page 1 and last weekend he was hoping his added experience since then would snag him the national title again in the Formula V class. Racing with him was daughter Emma, a Chisago High School senior who competed in the GT pro class using a 12-foot boat that reaches speeds of 50 mph. His brother Andy of Chisago and a sister who lives in Prescott, Wisconsin competed against him in the V-bottom division. “The other thing that’s kind of cool is that my wife LouAnn is a scorer for the races, and my older daughter Kyra and my folks Dennis and Shirley are helping out as well, noted Wachholz, 46, prior to the event. “My nephew who starting racing earlier this season will be in the same class as Emma. It’s just one big huge family event. Wachholz spent two years in a “sea college program in the Navy after high school, serving as boatswain’s mate on the USS McCandless based out of Norfolk, Virginia. He picked up body repair skills through that program, and afterward joined Waldoch Crafts & Customs in Forest Lake to learn more. By 1997 he had founded his own Forest Lake auto body company, moving the firm to Wyoming in 2002. His company now offers auto body repair for boats, cars and motorcycles, specializing in custom graphics, air brushing and murals. In 2010 Wachholz competed in his American Power Boat Association-sanctioned boat race. Since that time, he’s donated any winnings from competitions to Circle Pines-based veterans advocacy group Tribute to the Troops. “I pretty much fell in love with racing the first time I was in the seat and out on a race course, he explained. “Then I got more and more involved, doing more with the (Twin City Power Boat Association), setting up races in Forest Lake and stepping up into higher boat classes. In spite of once flipping his boat, he said the sport is considered safe compared to other motor sports. “It’s definitely a risk, and something that’s always in the back of my mind, he said of the potential danger. “But you can’t go out on a course worrying about anything but your boat. We go through a lot of training in order to be certified, and we’re trained do go over backwards and upside down, in a pool. Halfway through the 90s all the safety restraints and standards they were basically mandating brought the sport up to the point where you rarely hear about somebody dying in an accident. By 2011 he and fellow FLAHS grad Jeff Baker (son of late local boat race founder Ron Baker) had

The standard shape is based on a 15-foot boat from the 1970s that’s been redesigned and modernized, and the firm also makes an 18-foot model. Wachholz credits Baker, a former racer who now crews for others, with teaching him to mold boats to recreate other vessels. Baker now lives in White Bear Lake. “We are one of very few repair shops in the country that build their own boats, Wachholz noted. So far the founders have completed nine boats, selling most at prices of $5,500 to $8,500 not including motors. Wachholz custom built a wood and fiberglass model for his daughter Emma, to whom he taught racing skills from a young age. “We use radios so I can talk to her out on the course, he said. “There’s been a whole lot of practice, speed time and experience. She loves it.

As vice-commodore of the Twin City Power Boat Association, Wachholz has also been instrumental in organizing the Ron Baker event and securing sponsors. “The biggest thing is finding community support as far as sponsorship money, he noted. “I’m so fortunate I was able to (find) enough connections in Forest Lake, and friends in other businesses I work with all stepped up It’s an expensive thing to put on, with pretty high insurance costs. He said his five-year racing plan involves making a mold of his SST 200 racing boat so he can reproduce it for others. He also plans more national-circuit competition using his SST 200; he’d like to find a sponsor and eventually match his 2011 title or gain a world title — or at least a regional championships. ‘Tomato Mike’ rakes in the ribbons by Kristine Goodrich Of the dozens of ribbons Bernard Mike Tschida takes home annually from the Minnesota State Fair, he's proudest of his largest tomato. For the sixth consecutive year he won the blue ribbon for growing the most gargantuan tomato. This year he also added largest bell pepper to his long list of vegetablegrowing accolades. And as of press time before the vegetable contests closed, it appeared Tschida might finally take home the sweepstakes prize as the fair's mostwinning vegetable producer. For the Vadnais Heights man known as “Tomato Mike, plotting to win blue ribbons has become an almost fulltime, year-round pursuit. The retired carpenter spends his fall and early winter drying seeds, deciding which fair contests to enter, plotting how to best use every inch of his garden and making other plans. Come March he plants his seeds and after a few weeks moves his hundreds of seedlings to a dedicated room of his garage with grow lights. In April the meticulously labeled plants get moved to a greenhouse until the soil is warm enough to replant them outside, usually around Memorial Day. This year he grew 75 tomato and 75 pepper plants as well as a few carrots, onions and much more. Of his tomatoes and peppers, 25 each were attempts to earn the largest contest. Tschida's largest tomato this year, which also is his largest ever, was 25by-22 inches in diameter and weighed in at nearly 4 pounds 12 ounces. He's not sure what the measurements were for his winning pepper. After reading a book over the winter containing tips for growing gargantuan tomatos (yes, there really is an entire book devoted to the topic), he

entered his first tomato into the fair's largest contest in 2009. He came in second. He's taken the top prize every year since. He's dabbled some years in a few of the other largest plant contests as well. A few years ago he won largest sunflower head; it was 47 inches in diameter. There is one largest contest he doesn't intend to ever enter: the giant pumpkin contest. That would require use of too large a portion of his 3,000-square-foot fenced garden, he said. Tschida also enters his best produce into dozens of other State Fair contests, primarily in the many tomato, pepper and onion varieties. He rarely has an entry that doesn't win a ribbon. At this point he pats himself on the back only if earns the blue ribbon and is a bit disappointed if he earns a red, yellow or white ribbon, his wife, Barb, said. The ultimate prize is the sweepstakes. The vegetable competitors earn points for each ribbon (three points for a blue, two for a red and one for a yellow) and the person with the most points takes home the sweepstakes honor. Tschida was runner up the last two years and was third in 2012 and 2013. As of press time with one round of the four rounds of contests to go, he was 30 points in the lead. So what is the secret to his plantgrowing success? He applies a custom mix of organic fertilizers and homemade compost tea. He also waters only with the rainwater he collects in his three rain barrels. Tschida earns a few dollars for each of his ribbon (the cash prizes range from $10 for a largest award to $3 for fourth place). It's usually just enough to pay for his admission tickets and a few treats on a stick each of the four days he brings entries to the fair. Barb likened her husband's level of anticipation while judging is about to start to a child waiting to open his presents on Christmas morning. Mike said he plans to continue competing as long as his health permits.

“It's a thrill every time, he said. The Tschidas don't get to eat their ribbon-winning veggies after the judging is over. Health department rules require that all entries must be thrown out. — Kristine Goodrich is the editor of the White Bear Press

Kane Continued from page 1

Joining North America’s largest classical music organization was a dream come true that will be hard to top, Kane said in an interview last month. The former Pony beat out about 100 other highly skilled contenders to snag the coveted sixfigure position. “You fantasize about what you want to do, then you have stuff that’s way beyond, that you don’t even consider an option,” he explained. “The Met job was kind of like that for me. With a job like this, there’s really not anywhere else to go … I could easily see myself (staying) the next 30 years.” Though he really did spend a lot of time watching MTV as a kid, the 2000 SAHS grad also studied bass in school while taking bass guitar at Stillwater studio Water Music. He said he later recognized the excellence of the school district’s music program, which offered two full orchestras and multiple other student ensembles. “I had no idea how fortunate I was,” he said, “No one (among musicians I know) had anything resembling what I had at SAHS … people cannot believe how much we had there.” He named local influences as former junior high orchestra director Liz Deger, Water Music instructor Scott Westlake and SAHS orchestra director Jim Hainlen. At age 16 he began studying double bass with Brian Liddle of the Minnesota Orchestra, whom he called “my biggest influence, hands-down.” In spare time, Kane played in other school groups and took local performing gigs. “I kind of went off the deep end and spent all my time in my basement practicing or listening to stuff or out playing,” he said. After high school he studied music at the New England Conservatory in Boston, playing on school breaks in a rock band with childhood friend Frankie Lee. Fellow SAHS grad Lee has since achieved in the country/folk/Americana genre, signing with worldwide record label Loose Music. “To this day I love playing other types of music — I wish I got to do it more, to be honest,” Kane said. “But it’s so competitive to get a job as a classical musician, I felt like I had to put every single ounce of energy into that in order to be successful. Following graduation from NEC, Kane earned a master’s degree from The Juilliard School. Jobs then ensued with groups including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra; Minas Gerias Philharmonic Orchestra in Brazil; New World Symphony in Miami Beach; Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra; Boston Symphony; Chicago Symphony; Detroit Symphony;

National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa; Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; Philharmonia Orchestra in London; Pittsburgh Symphony; St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic. Kane has played in locations including Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, London and Switzerland. “I kind of just went wherever I was offered a job,” he said. “They’ve all been good breaks.” He described a typical audition at his level of expertise. “The preparation and training you do for the months and months before has a lot to do with it. Then everything’s got to kind of line up — there’s a lot of luck involved. It’s not uncommon for over 100 people to show up at these things. You might wake up and not feel very good, and sometimes you draw a number, then sit and wait three or four hours. That stuff can really throw you off.” He’s still in disbelief he won the Met audition. “I didn’t have a huge reaction because I couldn’t believe it,” he said of hearing the news. “It’s barely started to sink in now, over a year later.” One of nine bass players on staff, Kane is among the youngest members of the Met. The bassist he replaced retired at age 80 after a 50-year career with the group. These days he performs in four shows a week from September through late May. On a typical day he gets up early to run, walks 8 minutes to the Metropolitan Opera House for a three-hour all-orchestra rehearsal, eats lunch, practices on his own for several more hours, naps, eats supper then walks back for his nightly performance. Shows typically require him to be on task from 7:30 to about 11 p.m. Media stories last year about union negotiations with the Met disclosed the average full-time orchestra member earned $200,000 plus $85,000 in benefits. In the off season he takes other paying gigs, this summer performing in Switzerland, in upstate New York and in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. “If you’re lucky, people invite you to do other things,” he noted. “It’s a nice three and a half months.” When not working, Kane is often attending other musical performances as “homework” and spending time with his girlfriend. “It’s challenging trying to have a little bit of balance about other aspects of your life,” he noted. He said the uninitiated may be surprised at how long professional musicians at his level must spend in solitary practice. “Someone on the outside looking in might be surprised, really, how much perspiration, how much work goes in,

About the Met (source: www.metorchestramusicians.org) •Founded in 1883 •Stages more than 200 performances each season •Jazz great Wynton Marsalis described the Met as “respected the world over for its power, beauty, and accuracy.” •MET bassoonist William Short described his audition: “Candidates must prepare an exhaustive list of some of the most important and demanding parts ever written for their instrument.” Everyone has the same time to prepare. Of 208 resume submitted, 30 to 40 percent were invited to live auditions and the others asked to submit CDs. Sixty-seven made it to the live preliminary round, 15 advanced to semifinals, and two to finals before one was chosen. how incredibly dedicated you have to be to play in worldwide orchestras. You really have to live and breathe it, and if you don’t love it more than anything you’re not going to last very long.” Others might be shocked he still gets stage fright. “(During) the first performance, or a big solo, or anything that’s new, absolutely,” he confirmed. “But that’s what makes it so great — it’s a challenge very day. It certainly can be tiring … but I love doing it, I’m extremely fortunate to be able to get up and do it all day. I don’t take it for granted at all. I can honestly say I never had any interest in doing anything else.” He also loves living in New York, and said his annual visit to Minnesota is enough for him. “There’s so much going on … it’s the cultural epicenter of the world,” he said of the Big Apple. “Minnesota and Stillwater, I’m very proud to be from … but I always wanted to live in a big city.” Occasionally he’s recognized in public for his orchestra role, which he called “tremendously flattering. He said his five-year plan involves more of the same. “I plan on just working every day and trying to get better every day,” he said of his intense lifestyle. “I’ve found that the more work I put in the more I enjoy it, with every aspect on every level.” —Michelle Miron is the editor of the Lowdown

Prison Time Continued from page 1 Bronk's Stillwater attorney, Christopher Wesley Keyser, felt the agreement was fair. "Based off the complaint and numerous charges Mr. Bronk had, his exposure to the amount of prison he could serve was extremely high," noted Keyser. "The agreement we reached was fair and balanced. It allows him to accept responsibility and receive a fair sentence." Ramsey County Prosecutor Tom Hatch offered the amended complaint to Bronk in July, giving him time to consider a plea. He dismissed the felony forgery count because "it would not have added anything." "Bronk was responsible for making reports to this group," Hatch said. "He did not report he was forging checks. He did not report he was using the association's credit card for

personal expenses; that is the way he swindled the organization." Bronk, 42, was charged in January for illegal use of fire association funds for a four-year period ending in 2014 when he was dismissed as treasurer. He resigned his City Council seat shortly after his townhome was searched Nov. 3 by Isanti County deputies, who removed laptops, bank documents and credit cards. The association has an office in Isanti. Bronk remains out of jail until sentencing Nov. 18. According to Keyser, almost always a defendant is taken into custody at that time. In Minnesota, convicted felons normally serve two-thirds of a sentence, added the defense attorney. That means Bronk will likely serve a year and three months in

custody. The remaining third is spent in supervised release, or parole. "My opinion is the sentence is not a small amount of time for anyone, especially for someone who has never been in trouble before," Keyser said. "He admitted what he did, took responsibility and has to do some time for it. Some might consider it a lot, some might consider it a slap on the wrist. It depends on your perspective." As for the restitution, Bronk agreed to pay an amount that covered the entire four years even though he only pled guilty to counts that covered a portion of the time period. How and when he returns the money is negotiated with probation services. -Debra Neutkens is regional editor for Press Publications.

Opinion A Minnesota tradition THERE ARE VERY ABOUT THE few Minnesota State TOWN Fairs that I have missed from the time I was a toddler. Most enjoyable for Kathy and I is working at the Newspaper Museum, now for the third year, located in the front of the 4-H Building GENE JOHNSON on what used to be called Machinery Hill. The Fair is known as the Minnesota Get-together, but it might be better named the Minnesota Eattogether. The variety of foods, on a stick or not, seems to be the biggest attraction for the 1.7 plus million people who attend annually. This year we spent three half-day shifts explaining the 1930s hot metal process of producing a newspaper. People of all ages continue to be fascinated, and especially those who have had someone in the family working with hot type or today are on a newspaper or in a commercial printing plant. Mark and Deb Erickson of Floral Drive in White Bear Lake came by to say hello. They have lived in White Bear Lake for 20 years and were complimentary of the museum. Paul Chapin of Bald Eagle and his friend Carol Kepple of Albert Lea came by to say hello. Paul is a pilot for American Airlines and had a lot of questions about the old process of printing a newspaper. Jeannie Inglehart stopped by to make newspaper hats out of newsprint. She loves to do this for their own parties and had this to say, “First Amendment rights are our primary concern. Thanks for the education. I moved to White Bear Lake in April.” Dick and Sally Parenteau, our neighbors, came by the museum with two grandsons, Nick and Vinny. Sometimes we have to be away from White Bear Lake to greet neighbors. Mary Pat Laboda and Bob Hogoboom from Stillwater came by to say hello. Bob grew up in White Bear Lake and was a ’66 graduate. Two gentlemen came by, Bill and John, but I missed their last names. Bill especially wanted to say thank you for sending the White Bear Press while he served in Vietnam from 1969 through 1970. Another fellow by the name of John came by to say thank you to the new owner of the apartments on the northwest corner of County Road E and Bellaire Avenue. Now that they are cleaned up, there are far fewer problems in the neighborhood and fewer police cars. Bob and Joy Wilson of Lino Lakes have purchased a home on Cook Street in White Bear Lake and are currently fixing it up so they can move in. Jim and Kay Anderson from Marine on St. Croix came by to say hello. Kay was a reporter for the Country Messenger in Scandia from 1974 to 1977. They live next door to mutual friends, the Chuck Arnesons. Dean and Mary Shawbold stopped in to say hello. Dean and I served on the White Bear Lake Area Educational Foundation board together. It’s also a reminder of the fall fundraiser for the Foundation on October 23rd at the White Bear Yacht Club. – Gene Johnson is publisher emeritus of Press Publications.

Concussions and fall sports; how to protect young athletes Minnesota high school students suffered nearly 3,000 sportsrelated concussions during the 2013-14 school year, according to estimates based on voluntary reports to the Minnesota Department of Health by schools in the Twin Cities. While the concussions range from mild to severe, the point is that each one is considered a brain injury and that’s serious business. As local football, soccer and cross country teams begin practice and games, it is important for athletes, parents and coaches know basic and important information about concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Sometimes the signs of a concussion or TBI are obvious; the patient is unconscious or acting “out of it”. But signs and symptoms are not always immediate. That’s why it is so important to understand the main causes and symptoms of concussions and brain injuries which are often more serious than just a “bump on the head”.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

KURT BELK Immediately following a TBI, two things happen. First the brain tissue reacts to the trauma with biochemical and physiological responses to brain cells that have been damaged or even destroyed. The second and more commonly known reaction, is the loss of consciousness which can last minutes, hours or even longer. Other symptoms of a concussion or brain injury include short or long term changes in thinking, sensation, language and emotion. Here are some of the physical symptoms a young athlete may experience if he or she has recently suffered a concussion or TBI:

• Headache or “pressure” in head • Nausea or vomiting • Balance problems or dizziness • Fatigue or feeling tired • Blurry or double vision • Sensitivity to light or noise • Numbness or tingling • Does not “feel right” For adults, here are short and longer-term symptoms you might notice in an athlete who has suffered a concussion or TBI: • Appears dazed or stunned • Is confused about events • Answers questions slowly • Repeats questions • Can’t recall events prior to the hit, bump, or fall • Loses consciousness (even briefly) • Shows behavior or personality changes • Forgets class schedule or assignments The most important thing to know if you or a loved one has sustained a blow to the head is to seek medical attention, especially if you are noticing any symptoms out of the ordinary. The key to recovering

from even less severe head trauma is rest. For young athletes sustaining a concussion, it is important to stop play and sit it out, immediately. Your brain needs time to properly heal, so rest is necessary. Athletes and children should be closely monitored by coaches upon resuming play. Prevention is key to protecting yourself from serious head injuries. When necessary, wear a helmet especially in sports like football and while up at bat for softball or baseball. These are instances when a tackle or pitch can cause irreversible damage to an athlete who isn’t wearing head protection. Repeat concussions cause cumulative effects on the brain. Successive concussions can have devastating consequences, including brain swelling, permanent brain damage, long-term disabilities, or even death. — Kurt Belk is ER physician and medical director of The Urgency Room in Vadnais Heights.

Summer’s last gasp Summer is over. Sure, there will be a few more glory days, a few more trips out on the boat, and a few more hours spent at the beach, but the end of summer-like weather is near. As you look forward to autumn’s wooly sweaters and more time spent on the land than on the water, consider two seasonal chores that could make a difference in next summer’s water fun: removing a boat dock, and draining a swimming pool or hot tub. If you hire a business to remove your boat, dock, or lift make sure they are on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) list of Permitted Service Providers. These providers have attended training on Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) laws and many have experience identifying and removing invasive species such as zebra mussels that frequently attach to docks, lifts and boats left in the water. So, what happens if you pull your boat or dock out for the winter and discover that it has zebra mussels or aquatic plants attached? First, if your lake is not currently listed as infested and you find zebra mussels, you should contact the DNR. If you are storing your boat and equipment on-site at your home or property, you do not need a permit, even if your equipment has zebra mussels or other prohibited

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

ANGIE HONG invasive species attached. If you intend to transport your boat or equipment off-site for winter storage, however, you may not transport it with zebra mussels, faucet snails, or aquatic plants attached. If you suspect that there may be invasive plants or zebra mussels attached, you will need to remove them or obtain a permit from the DNR authorizing transport of prohibited invasive species and aquatic plants. On that note, what should you do with aquatic plants and/or zebra mussels that you clean off of your boat or dock? One option is to compost them in your yard; this does not require a permit. If you wish to dispose of them offsite, you will need a permit from the DNR. The end of the summer is also the time when most people drain their pools and hot tubs for the year. This can be a simple and harmless process, as long as you take the proper

steps to ensure that the water is de-chlorinated so that it does not kill fish or plants. Because water from swimming pools and hot tubs often contains high levels of chlorine, bromine, and copper and has low pH levels, it is illegal to discharge this water to a municipal storm sewer system without fi rst de-chlorinating. Happily, there is an easy solution. Simply stop adding chlorine and leave the water exposed to the air for three to five days until it becomes naturally de-chlorinated. You can also use de-chlorinating chemicals from a pool or spa supplier to remove the chlorine more quickly. Before dumping the water, use a test kit to ensure that it has been de-chlorinated to less than 0.1 mg/L of chlorine and has a pH range of 7-8., and consists only of water. Direct the water onto a vegetated surface so that as much as possible can soak into the ground (don’t flood your neighbor’s yard). Dispose of pool fi lters in your regular garbage and pour waste from pool fi lters and back wash systems into an indoor drain, not the storm sewer. — Angie Hong is an educator for East Metro Water. Continued from page 1 but, he said it's nearly impossible to snag a turkey because they see the movement of the bow and flee. “If they see you, it's over,â€? he said. The birds never go to waste. Last summer he distributed frozen turkeys to neighbors and challenged them to a cooking contest potluck. He hopes to repeat the contest this year if he accumulates enough birds. Simpson was interviewed for a third time recently on the “WCCO Live Outdoorsâ€? radio show. A team from the “Minnesota Boundâ€? TV segment filmed him last spring. Back in South Carolina he was too chicken, he said, to enter calling

contests. He decided to go for it shortly after moving to Minnesota. “I figured, 'No one knows me, so what if I make a fool of myself ?’ he said. He took home third place — at the Midwest Sports Show in Minneapolis — and was hooked. Now he competes several times a year in turkey and owl hooting. He's won 17 calling titles, including winning the 2011 and 2015 State Calling Championships. He claimed his first medal this year at the National Wild Turkey Federation Grand National Calling Championships in Nashville — third place in the owl hooting division.

He records many of the contests and posts them online; oftentimes he also streams them live. At the next national contest, the turkey federation is partnering with him to make his the official national championships live stream. Simpson also sponsors and judges a turkey calling contest at the Game Fair in Anoka each August. His daughter, Brooke, who is a pupil at Frassati Catholic Academy, is a budding hunter and caller. She won her first junior calling contest at age 3 and shot at her first turkey last year at age 5.

Junior running back Riley Trettel had a trio of rushing touchdowns in a 35-0 triumph over the Cardinals (0-3, 0-4), the Cougars' first win in four games. They are 1-2 in West Metro North Division play. Trettel bulled in from two yards out in the opening quarter, and from four yards in the second quarter. They carried a 14-0 lead into the intermission, then bumped it to 21-0 on a

Trettel's final touchdown came on a 19-yard run in the final quarter, and senior linebacker Theo Johnson ended the scoring by returning a fumble 11 yards for a score. Garrett Hanson was a perfect five-for-five kicking extra points. Centennial entertains Andover (0-3, 0-4) Friday night. Andover lost 27-0 to Anoka (1-2, 2-2) last week. I’ve been hearing a wide range of weather reports from friends. Friend Don mentioned to me that he went all summer without turning his AC on until we experienced our little streak of warm and humid weather the opening week of the month. Another friend commented that she didn’t need to water her yard once this summer. This was an active outdoor weekend with many events going on and the weather couldn’t have worked out better. Plenty of sunshine, low dew points and comfortable temperatures. We’re even experiencing a few days of above normal temperatures this week, extending summer into late September. Fall Equinox is on September 23 at 3:20am. Brought to you by
