Wig care revives self-confidence

Janine Panek of Lino Lakes was not satisfied with the free wig she received from the hospital during her chemo treatment. She even had the wig custom cut twice. Even then, she was not entirely satisfied.

“I kept trying (the wig) on thinking, ‘I don’t like it, I don’t like it,’” she recalled.

Eventually, Panek learned about Jerene Bailey, the wig specialist at Salon 61 in White Bear Lake. She made an appointment for a free wig consultation.

“You’re really kinda scared when you go in there,” she said about entering the studio. “You don’t know what it’s going to be like to wear a wig.”

But after her consultation, Panek was finally fully satisfied with her wig experience. Panek said that she learned a lot from Bailey about wig care, such as how a wig should properly fit and be cared for. For instance, she realized for the first time that the wig she had received from the hospital was too big for her.

More importantly, after seeing Bailey, Panek also regained a lot of self-confidence.

Panek recalled that when she first started chemo treatment for her breast cancer, she didn’t want to talk to anybody. She believed that when people looked at her, all they would see

Former Lino Lakes ambassador interns with dolphins

A former 2013-14 Miss Lino Lakes Ambassador was on cloud nine this spring when an idea became a reality.

Wyoming resident Rachel Huset, a 2014 Forest Lake grad, interned with Island Dolphin Care (IDC) in Key Largo, Florida, for six weeks in March and April.

“Ever since I was 11 or 12 I have wanted to work with dolphins. Throughout school I realized sciences really weren’t my thing,” she recalled. “I didn’t really think about animal behavior or anything else at that point, and I am not really an animal person: I am a dolphin person.”

While in high school, Huset was a personal care attendant (PCA) for a young girl with disabilities and found another passion. “It sparked my interest. I developed this joy and love for being around people with disabilities. They bring a different outlook on life and a joy to the world that I don’t see in other people,” she said.

That experience not only taught her how to be patient but motivated her to become an intern with the Special Olympics.

After she graduated, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where she majored in business administration and psychology. She graduated in December 2017.

During her freshman year of college, Huset got to thinking back to her PCA experiences and how that young girl did both water and horseback therapy.

“I was brushing my hair getting ready for class, when I randomly thought, ‘I bet you could use dolphins for therapy,’” she said. Huset began searching online for dolphin therapy but didn’t find much.

Eventually, she stumbled across IDC and realized the organization offered internships, but there were some requirements. She had to be 21 and she had to have a certain major, one of which could be psychology.

Eagle Scouts build ‘buddy benches’ Two Eagle Scouts who are passionate about helping the school district they grew up in are hoping their project will have a positive impact on students who attend Centennial Elementary.

The planning process for the two benches took around two months, Bauer said, and the actual build took one day.

“Buddy benches are basically when there is a kid that is new to the school and doesn't have very many friends, they can sit on the bench and another kid will come up to them and ask if they would like to play with them,” Bauer explained.

Bauer, of Blaine, is a junior at Centennial High School. He joined Boy Scouts in 2013 and is a member of Troop 232, which meets at Living Waters Church in Lino Lakes.

“I joined Scouts because my parents wanted me to do something ... after the first campout we ever did, I really enjoyed all of it, the camping, all the memories and the lasting friendships I've made,” he said.

Bauer is very close to achieving rank of an Eagle Scout, as he just completed his last merit badge. He hopes to have everything wrapped up in November.

The idea for buddy benches came from his mother at the dinner table.

“She had read about these benches and noticed that we didn't have any at the elementary playground at Centennial,” he said. “I wanted to do that project because you hear all of these stories about kids who get bullied at school and I didn't want that happening

Murphy, of Circle Pines, graduated from Centennial in spring 2018 and is currently a freshman at Iowa State University where he is studying mechanical engineering.

Murphy joined the scouting program in the fifth grade. He was a member of Troop 236, which has met at St. Joseph of the Lakes Church in Lino Lakes for the past few years. “I thought that the idea of camping, swimming, climbing and other things sounded like a fun idea,” he said.

In May, Murphy officially obtained the rank of Eagle Scout just before he turned 18, after completing three buddy benches. He heard about the benches from his mother.

“In addition to being benches for the new playground at Centennial Elementary School, they can also help children connect with each other,” Murphy said. “When someone sees somebody sitting on the

benches, it is a silent signal that they want somebody to play with. This is meant to help kids who are new or have a hard time making friends enjoy school a little bit more.”

The planning for the project took around two months and the actual building and installation about a week, Murphy said.

“As a former Centennial student, I was happy to do something for my old school, and I really hope that this idea catches on,” he said.

Centennial Elementary Principal Kathy Kaiser said already in the short amount of time that the school has had the benches, she has already seen a big impact.

“You wouldn’t believe how quickly the buddy benches became effective for students who were feeling left out. I don’t care what school you are at, what state or what community, that social time of recess can become very exclusionary for children and the buddy benches are helping to really eliminate that,” she said. “You never know how something is going to work, but because we really taught them the purpose of the buddy bench and how to use it appropriately, it has really been impressive so far.”

Planning conference Each year at Press Publications we seek feedback from the community and each employee. Then we share and review their input at a management retreat. It has been a time for the leadership of the company to get away from office distractions and dig into the data. We try to drill down the feedback into three to four key areas to bring back and implement.

This year we spent a few days at Sugar Lake Lodge, just outside of Grand Rapids. The conference facilities are impressive as they have carved out a niche catering to corporate groups and leadership programs like the Blandin program.

Although we did not do anything in terms of recreational activities during our conference, we did drill down a number of areas for us to focus. History center exhibit My parents recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Some of the family celebrated by attending the “1968” exhibit at the Minnesota History Center. The exhibit is informative and visually stimulating.

As you enter you can touch a Hue helicopter as a good portion of the exhibit is dedicated to the Vietnam War. It also includes the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, the feminist movement, art, music, film scenes, fashion, decorating, sports and scientific and technological advances.

We were amazed that while so many things have advanced, many others are remarkably the same or coming back into fashion. Take your family and plan at least 90 minutes. The exhibit runs through Jan. 21, 2019.

Beware of scams that don’t deliver on promises to help

f you are struggling with debts and trying to get your fi nances in order, the Minnesota Commerce Department urges you to beware of debt settlement scammers who will take your money but never deliver on their promises of quick debt relief.

Many reputable businesses and organizations help people get out and stay out of debt. But some companies target Movers & debt-burdened consumers with Shakers deceptive or false claims, illegal Minnesota fees and bad Dept. of advice that can Commerce push them even deeper into debt or legal trouble with creditors.

In Minnesota, anyone who offers to renegotiate or reduce your debt with creditors for a fee must be registered with the Commerce Department as a debt settlement provider. The department also licenses credit service organizations, which help consumers improve their credit, and debt management providers, which help consumers develop a budget plan to re-pay creditors. Consumers need to understand the differences among them because

each offers different services and results.

Getting out of debt is no easy task, so the last thing you need is a company that will take advantage of your difficult fi nancial situation and make it worse.

The Minnesota Commerce Department offers these tips to avoid falling victim to a debt relief scam: Check the license. Make sure the company is registered in Minnesota by using the License Lookup tool on the Commerce Department website. If it is not licensed, contact the Commerce Department at consumer.protection@state.mn.us or at 651-5391600.

Never make upfront payments. Advance fees for debt settlement services are banned under both federal and state law.

Minnesota law states that a debt settlement provider may not charge or collect any money until it has performed the services in the contract.

Read the fine print before you sign. Carefully review the written contract so you understand all fees and services. Make sure what you get in writing is the same as what you were told over the phone.

Know your rights. The contract must include a notice of your right to cancel it at any time with 10 days written notice. After

Beware of advice to stop paying your creditors. A debt settlement or debt management company cannot tell a consumer to stop paying their creditors. If they do, it is a red flag the company may not be trustworthy.

Breaking news: Husband talented gardener

I

am one of those people who loves the idea of having a garden but who does not like taking care of it.

This year I announced to my family I was not going to plant a garden because we belong to a CSA, which provided enough vegetables.

I thought the matter was settled, but my husband announced he would do the garden. He has never gardened before or really taken an interest in the past 30 some years I’ve had one.

I was surprised but happy he was willing.

He planned it all out and asked what I would like him to plant. We ended up with peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, beets, butternut squash, buttercup squash and tons of herbs. Most nights after work he heads to the garden before coming in the house.

He is a much better gardener than I have ever been, and the results are stunning. The tomatoes have never

looked better. The winter squashes are enormous already. The cucumbers are perfect. All the herbs and parsley have been growing like crazy, but the zucchini is too proliďŹ c. We have zucchini on the kitchen counter, the patio table, in the fridge and in the garage. We are eating it with every meal!

My brother showed me how to make zucchini noodles for spaghetti and lasagna.

I have been roasting it with chicken and Wild Chow have put in smoothies.

There are limitless Lisa possibilities.

My favorite way to Erickson eat zucchini is panfried and topped with some sour cream, lemon juice and a good cheese. It’s simple and a perfect side dish for any meal.

Pan Fried Zucchini w/ Sour Cream and Parmesan Cheese 4 small zucchini cut in 1/4" rounds Salt and pepper 3-4 tbsp. olive oil 1/3-1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, about 1 large lemon 1 cup sour cream 3/4 cup fresh grated ParmigianoReggiano cheese 1 tsp. fresh dill, chopped, plus more for garnish Generously sprinkle both sides of zucchini slices with salt and black pepper and set aside to drain excess liquid for about 10 minutes.

Heat a large, heavy fry pan over medium/high heat. When the skillet is hot, add half the olive oil. Place the zucchini rounds in the pan, making sure that the slices don’t overlap. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the bottoms are nicely browned. Turn and cook the other side until lightly browned.

Transfer ďŹ nished zucchini slices to a serving plate and keep warm in a 200° oven while you ďŹ nish cooking the remaining slices with the remaining oil. You can also allow the cooked zucchini cool to room temperature.

In a small bowl, combine lemon juice, sour cream, fresh dill, salt and pepper and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese.

Scoop dipping sauce into a serving bowl and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan. Garnish with extra dill and serve immediately with zucchini.

Anoka County Sheriff's Office holds swearing-in ceremony

Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Lino Lakes will host its annual Booya celebration at 11:30 a.m.

Sunday, Sept. 16. The church has hosted a Booya since 1923 in order to reach out to people of the community in fellowship while raising money to help support Gethsemane's vision of serving others. In addition to Booya, there will be other food items available, silent auction, bake sale, cake walk and other fun things to do. The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office held a hiring and promotional swearing-in ceremony Aug. 20.

Sheriff James Stuart welcomed to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office Detention Deputies Kelleen LaNore and Lucas Renter. Lanore holds an associate degree in applied science and previously worked it the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office. Renter holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota–Duluth and previously worked for Park Nicollet. LaNore and Renter will be assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Jail Division.

Stuart promoted Wayne Heath from the rank of lieutenant to the rank of commander.

Heath has 26 years of law enforcement experience with more than 14 years at the Sheriff’s Office. Dan Douglas was promoted from the rank of detective to lieutenant. Douglas is a 25-year law enforcement officer and has served as a detective with the Sheriff’s Office since 2001. Heath and Douglas will both be assigned to the Administration Division.

Centennial boys soccer opened the season with a pair of 1-0 victories, over Roseville Area on Aug. 23 and Irondale on Aug. 28.

“Our team has been tremendous defensively in the first two games,” said coach Jeff Otteson. He noted that goalie Ricky Hemeric made three saves against Roseville and was not required to make

any against Irondale.

Chalee Moua had the lone goal against Roseville, in the 60th minute. Max Percy, an outside back, skillfully moved the ball into the offensive third of the field and fed Moua heading down the sideline.

Adam Loeffler delivered the goal against Irondale in the 55th minute, connecting from 18 yards out.

LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lino Lakes City Council took the following action at its Aug. 27 meeting: • Approved the consent agenda, which included expenditures, Aug. 2 special work session minutes, Aug. 6 work session minutes and Aug. 13 meeting minutes (Councilwoman Melissa Maher abstained due to her absence.)

The consent agenda also included a resolution authorizing the issuance of a special event permit for Waldoch Farm's pumpkin patch and corn maze from Sept. 22-Oct. 31. Mayor Jeff Reinert explained the city had heard some concerns from residents about traffic on Elbe Street. That likely will not be an issue this year, however, as the permit is contingent upon traffic not exiting the event onto Elbe Street.

in the amount of $87,731, which came in under budget by $160.

• Approved a site improvement performance agreement for a new building for Love to Grow On, to be located at 6499 Lakota Trail on the southeast corner of Birch Street and Hodgson Road.

• Approved a resolution declaring the cost to be assessed and calling a public hearing for the 2018 West Shadow Lake Drive area street reconstruction project. The site improvement performance agreement addresses the site improvements for the building and provides submittal of all required fees and securities.

The amount to be assessed against the abutting benefitted properties is $943,343. The assessments would be payable over 15 years at an interest rate of 5 percent. Assessments will be certified to Anoka County for taxes payable 2020. The public hearing is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept.

CITY OF LINO LAKES NOTICE OF SPECIAL ASSESSMENT HEARING 2018 WEST SHADOW LAKE DRIVE AREA STREET RECONSTRUCTION Notice is hereby given that the City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on September 24, 2018 at Lino Lakes City Hall, 600 Town Center Parkway, Lino Lakes, Minnesota 55014 to consider, and possibly adopt, the proposed assessment against abutting properties, for the installation of sanitary sewer and watermain with the 2018 West Shadow Lake Drive Area Street Reconstruction Project. The total amount of the proposed assessment is $943,343.00.

Adoption by the Council of the proposed assessment may occur at the hearing. Such assessment is proposed to be payable in equal annual installments extending over a period of 15 years, the first of the installments to be payable on or before the first Monday in January 2020, and will bear interest at the rate of 5 percent per annum from the date of the adoption of the assessment resolution. To the first installment shall be added interest on the entire assessment from the date of the assessment resolution until December 31, 2019. To each subsequent installment when due shall be added interest for one year on all unpaid installments.

The property owner may at any time prior to certification of the assessment to the county auditor, pay the entire assessment on such property, with interest accrued to the date of payment, to the City. No interest shall be charged if the entire assessment is paid within 30 days from the adoption of this assessment. The proposed assessment roll is on file for public inspection at the City Clerk’s office. Written or oral objections will be considered at the meeting.

No appeal to district court may be taken as to the amount of an assessment unless a written objection signed by the affected property owner is filed with the municipal clerk prior to the assessment hearing or presented to the presiding officer at the hearing. The Council may upon such notice consider any objection to the amount of a proposed individual assessment at an adjourned meeting upon such further notice to the affected property owners as it deems advisable.

Under Minn. Stat. §§ 435.193 to 435.195 and City Code Section 303.10, the Council may, in its discretion, defer the payment of this special assessment for any homestead property owned by a person 65 years of age or older or retired by virtue of a permanent and total disability for whom it would be a hardship to make the payments or a member of the National Guard or other reserves ordered to active military service for whom it would be a hardship to make the payments. When deferment of the special assessment has been granted and is terminated for any reason provided in that law and City Code all amounts accumulated plus applicable interest become due. Any assessed property owner meeting the requirements of this law and City Code may, within 30 days of the confirmation of the assessment, apply to the City Clerk for the prescribed form for such deferral of payment of this special assessment on his/her property.

An owner may appeal an assessment to district court pursuant to Minn.

dolphin-assisted therapy in the U.S.,” she said. “It (business administration and psychology) ended up being a really great combination for me. I absolutely loved it. I use psych more than business anyway in dealing with people.”

So Huset waited patiently until she completed all of the requirements, then applied for the 2018 season and was accepted.

IDC was created in 1997 to help children with special needs and their families but has expanded to include adults and veterans. The programs are designed for people who have developmental and/ or physical disabilities, emotional challenges and critical, chronic or terminal illness. The nonprofit organization holds that everyone deserves the opportunity to play, giggle and have fun.

During her six weeks, Huset explained she worked with mostly children who were dealing with a variety of things, including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, heart conditions, depression/anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

“I found a lot of the people were coming to get an escape from reality because of procedures, therapies, doctors, a lot of stress,” she said. “Their goal was to relax and escape for a bit.”

During her internship, Huset learned a lot about dolphins. She worked alongside therapists to help brainstorm ideas and activities they could do with the families to reach their specific goals, which often included building confidence and increasing self-esteem.

While in the water with the dolphins, the children worked on their fine or gross motor skills by learning the proper hand signals from trainers to make the dolphins do tricks.

“It was cool to see the families interacting with each other and being involved with the therapy. For a family to come for the five days, just for the therapy alone is $2,200, that doesn’t include the travel or activities they are doing outside of therapy,” Huset said. She noted that IDC often provides scholarships to families in need.

Huset added, “The impact they are making on their life it is something that they are always going to remember and cherish.”

After the internship, Huset realized that idea she had randomly one day while brushing her hair was so much more than an idea, it was already creating memories these families would cherish and remember forever. “It was not just an idea, it was actually affecting people’s lives,” she said.

These days, Huset is working with the Taste of NFL planning for Super Bowl 2020 in Miami. Her ultimate dream is to one day make her way back to Key Largo and work for IDC. She currently volunteers her time to the organization in hopes of finding some more sponsors to raise money for the nonprofit.

“I feel so passionate about them and what they are doing. I want to help them get more money and stay alive and keep doing what they are doing,” she said.

WIG SPECIALIST: Makes clients feel comfortable and confident FROM PAGE 1

was her hair loss and illness.

“It’s easier when people don’t know (you’re sick), otherwise your whole life turns into breast cancer,” she said.

When she started wearing the wig she had purchased from Bailey, however, she no longer felt defined by her illness. “When you wear a wig, you think everyone knows,” she said. But while wearing Bailey’s wig, she said “very few people knew I was sick.”

“If you get the wig and it fits properly and is the right color,” she continued, “... it will just make you more confident.” She wasn’t the only one who noticed improved self-confidence; she said that her daughter noticed it, too.

“What a difference it made to me to have that wig and start wearing it,” she said.

Although the notes are all phrased differently, they echo a similar sentiment: a revival of self-confidence after undergoing Bailey’s wig services.

“This is my calling in life,” she said. “This is just something that is so needed for women.”

Bailey adhered to this call 15 years ago when several of her clients needed wig care but didn’t know where to turn. After researching brands of wigs with naturallooking appearances, she went to a seminar hosted by a company from California and then got right to work

providing wig care and free wig consultations.

Her work has continued since Salon 61 relocated to downtown White Bear Lake about a year ago. Today, clients who have faced cancer, alopecia and other conditions involving hair loss meet with Bailey in a private room at the studio. Bailey then does everything she can to make the clients feel as comfortable about the wig-fitting procedure as possible.

She understands and has observed that clients coming in for a wig consultation often feel vulnerable and uncomfortable.

“I make them feel comfortable,” she said. “It’s pretty tense when they walk in … I try to break the ice so it’s not so tense to begin with.”

Breaking the ice often looks like explaining what the wigs she carries are made of and assuring her client that these wigs are comfortable. Bailey explained that sharing knowledge and assurance about the wigs inspires trust in the clients. She also encourages clients to bring friends or family members to provide further support and insight, as well as photographs of themselves from when they used to have hair.

Photographs often serve as inspiration for Bailey when she chooses, fits, cuts and styles wigs so that the wigs can match the clients’ hair preferences. This practice is one of many reflecting Bailey’s efforts to make wigs seem like wig-like and more like actual hair.

“Hair is really important to (clients),” she explained.

“They don’t think of anything else to do with their (situation) until they get their wig taken care of.” Bailey also takes care to update her stock with the latest hairstyles.

In the end, Bailey said that when she started wig care, “I wanted to make my clients feel more confident with themselves,” and “have somebody feel like themselves.”

The thank-you notes on display and the confidence she has observed from clients when they leave their consultation both seem to testify that she has accomplished her mission.

“I am very, very thankful that (I started wig care),” she said.

A lasting impact Panek no longer wears the wig she bought from Bailey, but the confidence she gained from wearing it has had a lasting impact.

About a month ago, Panek learned that her daughter had raised money by selling raffle tickets at a bean bag tournament. About $1,100 was donated to Bailey’s wig services at Salon 61.

Bailey never met Panek’s daughter; she was attending to a client when the woman came in to donate the money.

“I can’t believe she did that,” Bailey said, noting that such an act of financial generosity has never happened to her before. Bailey is also shocked that anyone would leave so much money behind and trust that it would be used wisely.

Since then, Bailey has used the money to provide two free wigs and is planning to provide a third. A wig usually costs between $250 and $400.

“I need to meet with them,” Bailey said of the women who participated in the raffle. “It’s very appreciated.”

Where have all the tradespeople gone?

Where have all the workers gone? While singer Bonnie Tyler famously lamented the absence of good men in the 1980s, employers today may be asking a similar question: Where have all the workers gone? The Greater Metropolitan Workforce Council found that the Twin Cities area could face a workforce shortage of more than 62,000 by 2020. These shortages will be seen in several sectors, including health care, government, finance, construction, and manufacturing, among others.

So what is causing this workforce shortage? It comes as no surprise, but the baby-boomer generation retirements certainly play a part. However, the absence of teenage workers is present as well. This fall, Lakes Center for Youth and Families (LC4YF) will join this mission with a new program, Launch. Within this program are several opportunities for youth to become career ready: a professional skills class, job tours and interviews, job shadows, career-focused mentoring, and apprenticeships. LC4YF continues its mission to help guide teens to successful futures, in this case, in the workforce. Each of the opportunities within Launch will help students research and explore their interests as they pertain to the workforce so that they can head into necessary schooling feeling ready and confident in that particular fi eld.

7th annual Stomp Out Suicide event raises $83K WYOMING — More than 1,600 people of all ages participated in the seventh annual Stomp Out Suicide 5K event on Saturday, Aug. 18. The event raised more than $83,000 for Canvas Health, providing vital funds to sustain mental and chemical health care, suicide prevention education and mobile crisis services.

It was Deb Moe’s first time attending the event and walking in the 5K. “Each time my foot hit the ground, I imagined crushing the stigma of depression,” she said. “Each time my foot lifted back up to take another step, I imagined lifting a heart to hope.”

Families from all over the metro — and some from surrounding states — came together at Wyoming’s Goodview Park to enjoy the run/walk as well as food trucks, a silent auction, meeting Goldy Gopher, face painting and glitter tattoos. Participants remembered those they’ve lost through a memory line, storytelling and a balloon release.

The event also featured a health and wellness area where people could gather mental health resources.

The hope is that people in the community who are struggling with mental illness, substance use or who are considering suicide will think twice and connect with the many life-saving resources available here in the greater Twin Cities.

Country radio personality Paul Thomas “PT” energized the crowd as the event emcee. PT, whose father died by suicide in 2013, founded the #LIVIN Foundation to promote mental health and raise suicide awareness.

Kat Perkins, who rose to national fame on NBC’s season six of “The Voice,” entertained participants and sang a debut of her song, “You Are Not Alone.”

Perkins also delivered the event’s key message, which encouraged fearlessness and perseverance in the face of struggles and heartache.

It’s been an exciting ending to the summer with a few nice rainfalls and even some high winds. We’ll come up a little short of normal for rainfall this past August but overall it has been a wet summer. Infinite Campus assembles care packages for Pines School staff

This summer Infinite Campus employees assembled care packages for teachers and paraprofessionals at Pines School in Lino Lakes. The care packages were made up of over 500 items donated from Infinite Campus employees and included flash drives, Target gift cards, lotion, dry erase markets, etc. On Wednesday, Aug. 29, 25 staff from the Pines School visited Infinite Campus for lunch, training and to receive their gift bags full of supplies.
