New ambassadors have dreams much bigger than their crowns BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — Two things are true about the three young women who were selected to represent Lino Lakes in 2019—they were shocked about being chosen, and their dreams are much, much bigger than their crowns. Three judges — Lyz Carlson, Ray Culp and Rachel Huset — selected Molly Nhean, Emma Pierson and Alexis Lombard as the 2019 Miss Lino Lakes Ambassadors at the 15th annual coronation Aug. 19 at Centennial Middle School. There
were 11 candidates vying for three spots. “Judging is based on overall impression, including poise, communication skills, sincerity and a warm, friendly personality,” said Ambassador Coordinator Barb Culp. “Judges then put together a team of unique individuals who will complement one another and be good role models and strong representatives for the city of Lino Lakes.” The Miss Lino Lakes Ambassador Program was established in 2004 as part of Blue Heron Days. The program's mission is
to support the development of young women in Lino Lakes and surrounding areas (Circle Pines, Centerville, Columbus Township and Lexington) through poise, scholarship and achievement. Candidates must be a junior in high school through age 22 as of May 20 (of the current year). The individuals act as goodwill ambassadors representing the city of Lino Lakes at various parades, coronations, volunteer events and other functions throughout the state of Minnesota. Firearm safety course aims to demystify guns BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — Since 2009, the Lino Lakes Police Department (LLPD) has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to train and certify more than 180 people in firearms safety. The LLPD offers the firearms safety program once a year for up to 20 students. The program consists of five two hour and 45-minute sessions in addition to a written test, field exam and proficiency at the gun range. Last week, 19 more students were certified.

“Most of these kids have been exposed to guns, whether through a family hunting tradition, a dad's handgun, at a friend’s house ... One of our goals of this course is to make the kids comfortable enough to not only render them safe if they have to, but also know that they aren't as mysterious or scary as people might think they are,” said Deputy Director Kyle Leibel. The course is designed for the beginner hunter (at least 11 years of age) but is also open to anyone who wishes to certify. The Minnesota DNR requires this
Hold a celebration of what it’s like to be a female athlete. Check. That was the goal Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Centennial High School’s first-ever Female Athlete Symposium. The five-hour event for girls entering grades 8-12 was held in the Performing Arts Center with a keynote speaker, as well as several breakout sessions discussing the topics of growth mindset, yoga, handling defeat, nutrition/health and guided imagery. The panel included Michelle Kline, Cheryl Wood, Sarah Austin, Darcy Rylander, Melia Cotter and Lauren Thrift. The woman behind it all, Community Education Director Cori Sendle, wanted the more than 200 girls attending to be “proud of what they do and their accomplishments,” and for them to know that it’s “not about winning, [it’s about] becoming a better person.” Kline, a Centennial graduate and former Olympic speed skater, started off the day as the keynote speaker. As she spoke about what it took to be a two-time Olympic athlete, she said she was thrilled to be back in her hometown. Her topics included goal setting, visualization, relaxation and being proud in doing that best that you can. “Both life and sport is going to be filled with ups and downs, but remember your big dreams. Paint your picture and be comfortable in your own skin. Big dreams can come true for young girls in small communities,” Kline affirmed. Centennial’s own athletic trainer, Cheryl Wood, presented on athlete self-care. Wood provides sports medicine services and has built strong bonds with her athletes.
