LINO LAKES — The 14th annual Blue Heron Days festival is fast approaching. The popular family get-together will be Aug. 17-19 at various sites throughout Lino Lakes, mainly Lino Park. While many popular attractions remain this year, some new attractions have been added to the docket. Blue Heron Days was established in 2004 by a small group of area volunteers who desired to make the vision of a Lino Lakes community festival a reality. After extensively researching other festivals throughout the state, this dedicated group of volunteers paved the road in making Lino Lakes “the place to be” each year on the third weekend in August. The celebration is sure to offer something for everybody with traditions such as Family Movie Night, the Officer Shawn Silvera Memorial Run, Grand Parade, Quad Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Art Fair and the Miss Lino Lakes Ambassador Coronation. Of course, the magic bounce inflatables, Kids Splash & Dash Dualthon, Spin Art, petting zoo and the Waldoch Farm Garden Tour/ Corn Feed will all be happening too. New this year, The Tavern on Main will host a craft beer and specialty food stand on site in Lino Park Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. See the full article in this week's Quad Community Press. The band A Girl's Journey will perform

Children take delight in the cooling mist of water created by Lino Lakes firefighter Sean Mooney during the Night to Unite gathering at Birch Park Tuesday, Aug. 7. See more photos on page 22.

Lovell site redevelopment moving forward JOHN JUNGBAUER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

LEXINGTON — Redevelopment of what was once city hall, a school and home to many businesses was recently once again in front of a city advisory board. The Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing to take public comments on the proposed site plans and land use requests from Dominium Acquisitions, LLC for the Lovell building redevelopment project, located at the corner of Lexington Avenue and Lovell Road. A few residents attended the meeting to ask questions about the proposal

and share their concerns. The Landings of Lexington is proposed to include a 180-unit apartment complex. What was originally brought forward as a retirement community is now being proposed as affordable housing instead. This change stems from Dominium’s analysis of the costs and potential revenue of the project and determining that the change in occupancy was necessary to maintain profitability moving forward. The demolition of the current buildings comes at a high cost, representatives said, due to the age of the structure and the removal of asbestos and old piping.

City Attorney Kurt Glaser addressed the commission and voiced his support for the requested variances. He noted the city would benefit from the influx of residents, but while it has a vested interest in the project, concerns from citizens are and will continue to be taken into consideration. Resident Darren Johnson owns property that will neighbor the apartment grounds. He raised the issue of increased traffic on an already busy intersection (Lexington Avenue and Lake Drive) and what plans are in place
