Mom hopes to inspire other moms to stay fit BY SHANNON GRANHOLM STAFF WRITER

One mom is hoping her weight loss journey will inspire others to stick with it and become healthier and stay fit. Stacy Reichert, of Ham Lake, works as a CNA supervisor at the HealthPartners Clinic in Lino Lakes. In April of 2011 she decided to join Moms on the Run in hopes to lose some weight after having her second child. Little did she know that by joining the organization not only would she lose weight and feel better, but she would also find a support system. “This program has completely changed my life. The people that you meet are so positive,” she said. “If you come to class and you are down about something, they can usually sense it and they try to cheer you up.” Moms on the Run is a structured fitness program for women of all ages (not only moms) and fitness levels who want to get in shape and have fun doing it. The organization focuses on interval training SUBMITTED

Local man provides tutoring for underprivileged youth

District receives four 'Awards of excellence'

BY JOLENE FRID CONTRIBUTING WRITER

LINO LAKES — Resident and local business owner Bob Kohl’s passion lies in social justice issues. That’s why he and his wife, Pat, have given time and resources to provide tutoring services to youth in the St. Paul area. The Bob’s Auto Ranch owner has had a passion for community and helping those less fortunate for most of his life and has been involved in many community organizations throughout the years, including activism for the GLBTQ community. The tutoring service he leads, housed in a former church building at 441 Rice St. in St. Paul, provides academic support and encouragement for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Kohl says the service provides more than just tutoring, and finds ways to meet needs for students in general. The service is powered mainly by personal funds from Kohl, who sees it as an opportunity to help youth graduate who may not otherwise have completed high school. Donors have donated cars to Kohl’s business, which he’s able to then sell for cash to fund the program. Tutoring is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dinner is always SEE LOCAL MAN, PAGE 3

Flags on the Centennial Middle School campus are another aspect the district received the award in marketing/branding. BY SHANNON GRANHOLM STAFF WRITER

CIRCLE PINES- The Centennial School District is among 83 districts that received Awards of Excellence from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). In fact, in three of the four categories Centennial won awards in, it was the only district in the state to be recognized. Publications that received Awards of Excellence were on display at the NSPRA National Seminar July 17-20 in Chicago. Centennial received awards for its recruiting brochure for new families, its annual report, The Observer, and for overall branding/ marketing such as signs on the exterior of buildings and window clings on cars and in local businesses. “It is really gratifying and a reflection of the good work that all of our people are doing around here in the district and our communities,” said

Superintendent Brian Dietz. “We put a lot of time and energy into this effort to really go out and tell our story, and this is the first time that any of our work has actually even been put into the queue for evaluation for this type of award.” Eighty-three publications out of 581 entries received Awards of Excellence. The NSPRA is a non-profit association founded in 1935. The organization provides school communication training, products and services to school leaders throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity Schools worldwide.
