CMS implements midday experience this fall BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

Centennial Middle School (CMS) is hoping to make a big difference in the lives of students, staff, parents and community members by implementing new programming this fall. The Directed Studies/Digital Skills program will consist of a 30-minute block in the middle of the day, either before or after lunch, that will be set aside for directed studies for three quarters and digital skills for one quarter. “The purpose is to provide a time during the student day to make sure they have a way to bring their stress levels down through a consistent way to get the support they need individually,” said CMS Principal Bob Stevens. “It is my goal to make sure we are providing high-quality learning experiences for students and that we also find ways to assist in making that meaningful and manageable for everyone involved.” Planning for the midday experience began after middle school staff held continued discussions with staff at the high school about its Lunch Energize Achieve Participate (LEAP) program, which was implemented during the 2016-17 school year. “We had talks of starting a similar program that would be age-appropriate for sixth- through eighth-graders because there are different needs at the different levels,” Stevens said. “Over the last year we had professional development opportunities for staff to come together by grade level to dive deep into what students needed, what that would look like for adults so they could be successful in helping students.” The directed studies daily block will be dedicated to a specific activity, such as an open study hall where students can make up tests, work on homework or get assistance from teachers. The time may also be used to work on group projects or complete occupational or speech assessments. “Some of our students leave the house at 6 a.m. and aren't getting

Lino Lakes local competes on television BY JULIA ARNOLD CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The fast-paced, action-packed ninja warrior workout craze isn't going away anytime soon. Judging from the numerous television shows devoted to the ninja-style obstacle competitions, they are only gaining in popularity. “Ultimate Beastmaster,” an original Netflix series in its second season, features Minnesotan ninja

warrior Kyle Soderman. Though he's currently a national ninja competitor, locals may know him best as the baby pictured on the side of the familiar Rock Gardens delivery truck that his family owns. But he's all grown up now.

Taming the beast Season two of “Ultimate Beastmaster” was filmed in Los Angeles last November and will air in August, though exact dates are still

to be determined. The Netflix reality show is the brainchild of Dave Broome, the creator and executive producer of “The Biggest Loser,” and actor and producer Sylvester Stallone. According to the series' website, “Competitors from around the world give everything they’ve got in a thrilling crusade to conquer the most jaw-dropping spectacle of a modern monster.” Contestants

Naturally sweet farmers

I

have been buying sweet corn from the same farmer for over ten years. Most days when I stop, no one is around. Last week, I ďŹ nally met the farmer who has been providing me and and my family with the best tasting sweet corn ever! Arlen Luehmann has been farming and selling sweet corn for over forty years. He and his wife are now in their 80s, but Luehmann loves farming and likes selling fresh sweet corn to neighbors and friends. Plus, it keeps him busy. Luemann is as sweet and friendly as the sweet corn he sells. He started farming when he was young and took over his father’s farm. Before he retired, he farmed 175 acres for almost 70 years. “I don’t watch T.V. and I have a hard time sitting still, so farming and cutting wood keep me busy.â€? I love knowing where my food comes from and who is growing it. I grew up in a city and had no real understanding of where my food

came from, other than the farm animal speak and say toy or the grocery store. I remember sitting in a circle during kindergarten, when my teacher Mrs. Max asked the class where pork came from. My hand shot up, but she picked another student who said, Wild Chow “pigs. Convinced my teacher was wrong, I Lisa raced home and asked my mom. I almost Erickson became a vegetarian at age 5, but I liked bacon too much. Understanding where our food comes from keeps our connection to the growers vibrant. Knowing where our food comes from helps everyone understand the commitment, cost, and love invested in growing food. It

Take some time to get to know our farmers. Farmers markets are a great place to meet local farmers. Farmers love whet they do—it’s a labor of love. I have met farmers who have become my good friends. They are more than happy to tell you about their farms and maybe even invite you to visit. Home-frozen Sweetcorn (perfect in the middle of winter) Adapted from Sweet Dairy on the Prairie

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Time to step-up? Affidavits of candidacy for the positions of the Lino Lakes mayor and city council will be accepted from Aug. 1 through Aug. 15. Residents of Lino Lakes interested in running for mayor (two-year term) or city council (two seats, four-year terms) must fi le this affidavit, along with five dollars, in order to be listed on the Nov. 7 ballot. Anyone who has a vocation to serve must do so for the right reasons: no legacy building, no ax to grind, no special interests. Rather, a person

looking to serve in the capacity of mayor or city council member should bring meaningful experience, intellect, work ethic, diplomacy and integrity to the position in order to truly serve the best interests the city and its citizens. What does this service look like? In Lino Lakes we meet on the fi rst Monday of each month to discuss the most important matters before the city at this time. This meeting is commonly known as the “work session. Work sessions generally last from one hour to four hours. We have a televised meeting on the second Monday of each month to discuss and take action on the matters discussed at our previous work session. Unless there are urgent matters that require special actions, we ordinarily do not meet on the third (or fi fth) Monday of each month. Finally, on the fourth Monday of each month we have a short work

session followed by a televised meeting. Importantly, additional “personal time must be spent in research, preparation and planning to best serve the interests of the city. However, this does not have to be an overly significant commitment in terms of total time spent on city business. We would only ask that each member brings thoughtfulness, participation and value to each and every meeting.

A proven technique for making difficult life changes will be explored at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1 at and at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3. During the episode, titled “Getting Unstuck: Practical Ways to Improve Your Life, participants will take part in a nonthreatening activity that

Centennial VFW takes district again, will try defending state crown

The Centennial VFW baseball team, slated to start state tournament play Friday, Aug. 4 in Willmar. BY BRUCE STRAND SPORTS CONTRIBUTOR

Centennial defending state champion VFW baseball team earned a return trip to the state tournament by capping its unbeaten drive to the District 7 championships with a 5-3 win over Totino-Grace on Monday, July 24 at Anoka. Owen Campbell pitched the distance in that win over the Cougars, who’ll take a 21-8 record into the state tournament Friday through Monday in Willmar. The state pairings had not been determined before the Quad Community Press went to press. “I would be lying to you if I said I thought we would be here today at the start of the season,” reflected coach Michael Diggins, a college football player who’s taken VFW teams to state in both his two seasons at the helm. Diggins added, “The boys truly came together these last two weeks and accomplished a tremendous feat. Centennial is going to back-to-back

state tournaments for the first time in program’s history.” In last week’s report in the Quad, they were one win from state after beating Coon Rapids 8-2 and 4-0, Totino-Grace 5-0, Blaine 5-4 and Maple Grove 4-2. The main pitchers are Casey Trapp, Campbell and Tanner Adams. Infielders are Jack Ewings, Alex Grone, Travis Koolmo, Andrew Mathies and Josh Hermes. The outfield includes Ehrlinger, Shawn Rauch, Nolan Mendoza and Frank Matti. They’ve rotated several catchers due to injuries. VFW is primarily the players who have completed their sophomore season. Some have played varsity baseball but most were junior varsity players in the spring. Diggins, a Centennial graduate, attends Wisconsin-River Falls, where he has one season left on the football team. He is assisted by Spencer Waldvogel, Drake Molitor, and two Centennial High School head coaches, Rollie Goertzen (baseball) and his father Mike Diggins (football).

KYLE SODERMAN: Local attempts to 'tame the beast' on Ninja Warrior TV show must be extremely athletic in order to be selected to participate in the obstacle challenges set up within the monstrous mechanical beast. Soderman said he possesses the skill set and the experience, so when he heard about auditions for a televised ninja show, he jumped. It was a twist of fate, however, that led to “Ultimate Beastmaster.” Soderman originally applied for a different show that didn't cast him. He explained, “the casting team liked my video and told me to apply for “Ultimate Beastmaster”... I had no idea what it was.” But he made an application video with clips of his skills and athletic ability, and he was given the green light.

run a ninja warrior obstacle gym called Obstacle Academy in Edina. I've been doing the sport for about two years, and now I compete at a professional level … I travel monthly to compete.” Ninja warrior gym enthusiasts note countless benefits to this unique kind of workout. Soderman said one positive aspect is that “anybody can get involved; that's what great — there's not one specific body type that's perfect … men, women … everyone comes with different strengths and weaknesses.” The rewards happen quickly, he noted. “It doesn't take long to get decent at it. It's about 80 percent technique, 20 percent strength … as you do it more and more, it gets easier, and then you [can take on] new challenges.”

What's a ninja warrior?

Small-screen excitement

The obstacle course workout trend started on the small screen with shows like “American Ninja Warrior” and “Wipeout.” It's basically obstacle fitness with competitions. Soderman quickly became passionate about the trend. He said, “I helped open and

Soderman enjoyed his experience on the show and was especially impressed by the mountainous beast the athletes competed in. “The coolest part was the structure itself,” he said. “When we first pulled up to the beast, we saw this giant lit up dragon. It's the

biggest trussed structure ever built. It's bigger than you can imagine, and it's out in the mountains. It's a crazy sight.” Due to ample confidentiality documents, cast members can share few details about the second season of the show until it airs in August. What Soderman could say is that the cast included 108 athletes from six different countries. He was one of 18 U.S. athletes who competed this season. Not one to step back from a challenge, Soderman said he would definitely compete again if asked. “That would be an awesome time.” In the meantime, he will continue training and working at Obstacle Academy while also making time to help out with the family business, The Rock Gardens in Lino Lakes, during the busy summer months. Local musician has strong connection with music BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

CENTERVILLE — Residents from the Quad community packed Hidden Spring Park July 11 to support four Centennial students who teamed up a few months ago to form a band for the performance. Aly Hanzal, 16, of Centerville, is no stranger to Music in the Park. In fact, this was her third time performing at that venue, but the first time as a member of a band. Hanzal first became interested in singing and playing music about seven years ago after learning some things from her father Jeff, who used to play guitar. “I thought it was cool and decided to try it,” she said. “He taught me some

things and I started taking lessons. I explored it from there. It helps me express myself, and I have a really strong connection with it.” Hanzal started performing three years ago and was a semifinalist in the State Fair Talent Show last year. Hanzal thought it would be neat to form a band because “you can do a lot more with a band. When you get all those different sounds, it really fills it in and makes it actually sound like music,” she explained. So Hanzal, with the help of her father, started posting flyers around town to form a band of her own. Although Hanzal was hoping to branch outside of the walls of Centennial, she is grateful for the other three band members, who all hail from Centennial, including drummer Elijah

ments make Four Thirteen unique. “We are all very funny people in our own way, and we mesh really well,” she said. “Our ability to play other instruments and other genres of music really helps us branch out more. Sometimes Eli will sing a song, I will get on a box drum and Charlie will play the trombone. We are all very musically rounded.” In addition to music, Hanzal also enjoys making art, doing tractor pulls and working with animals. She hopes to compete in the State Fair Talent show again this year.

The last week of the month ended pretty much the way the opening week began, on a dry note. For the month, much of the Twin Cities will total drier than normal. I’ve totaled only 1.92” of rain this July, less than half of what I’ve should’ve received. Temperatures finished slightly warmer than normal with the airport totaling five 90° days while I totaled four 90° days this July. As we enjoy the last full month of summer, the Dog Days are upon us and there is still plenty of time to plan a week-long or weekend getaway.
