For 19 years the one thing Love to Grow On has lacked is a space it can call its own. As early as March of 2019, the business could have a new location it can call home.

Love to Grow On currently has two centers in the Quad area including at Living Waters Lutheran Church in Circle Pines and in a leased space near Festival Foods in Lexington. The plan is to build a new 14,400 square-foot facility, located at the corner of Hodgson Road and Birch Street in Lino Lakes, and close the other locations.

The organization became a nonprofit organization in August of 1999 and officially opened its doors at Living Waters in May of 1999. “I really felt that childcare should not be a money maker, it should be doing what is best for children and families and working hand-in-hand with them,” said Co-Founder and Executive Director Linda Bartos King.

“The fi rst day we opened we had three kids, so I really wasn't sure if we would make it but we built rapidly. We had a lot of teachers from the Centennial School District who brought their kids and would tell everybody about us,” she said.

In 2003, swarms of parents began touring Love to Grow On, after a childcare center that had been in operation for 30 years, closed down at the baptist church in Spring Lake Park. Centerville native headed to Miami on full ride

CENTERVILLE—A centerville native is one of 230 “top students” from across the country attending 30 universities to be selected as a Stamps Scholar.

Ruth Stokes is headed to the University of Miami Frost School of Music this fall on a full ride Stamps Scholarship.

Stamps Scholars are chosen for their academic excellence, leadership experience and exceptional character.

“Given its selectivity and benefits, the Stamps Scholarship has become one of the most prestigious scholarships for

family. Her father Timothy and mother Debra are both pianists and met while majoring in piano performance in college. “I grew up with music all around me and started playing piano at a very young,” she said.

Around the age of 4, Stokes said her and her older sister Rachel started playing piano and a couple years later they switched to strings. Stokes played cello and Rachel played violin. “I guess my parents thought there were too many pianists in the house,” she said.

“We did private lessons with some great teachers. We have

high school seniors,” said Don Bishop, associate vice president for enrollment at the University of Notre Dame. “The Stamps Scholarships have become one of the most important and attractive offerings among our merit programs.”

At many partner universities, the Stamps Scholarship covers the total estimated cost of attendance for four years of undergraduate study and also includes an enrichment fund that scholars can use for academic and professional development, ranging from study abroad, to internships, to independent research.

LOVE TO GROW: Area childcare nonprofit consolidates into one new location FROM PAGE 1

to Grow On operated in Spring Lake Park (while continuing to run the Circle Pines location), before they once again had to find another home when the church merged with Eagle Brook Church.

Bartos King explained they had a very tough time finding a space that would be convenient for their families. In February of 2009, Love to Grow On stumbled across a vacant building in Lexington and decided to give it a try.

“It was a giant leap of faith for us, it was a huge undertaking.

As soon as we opened the doors, the economy crashed. We had families coming in daily at both sites who had lost their jobs,” Bartos King recalled. “There was a time where I wasn't sure how things were going to work out, but we were able to weather that storm.”

When it came time to renegotiate the lease with Living Waters, Bartos King said it became apparent that they would need to fi nd a new home, again. A lease was signed in 2016, that stipulated that Love to Grow On needed to find a new home by 2019.

Bartos King said they couldn't fi nd any space to buy/lease in the area, but they stumbled across the vacant piece of land on the corner of Birch Street and Hodgson Road, and it felt right. It was also conveniently located very close to both the Lexington and Circle Pines centers.

“We went out there and walked around and when I got on the piece of land, you could see the ponds, cattails, hear the birds...and we are all about nature. The board went out to look at it and we knew this was it, this should be our home,” she said. “The wonderful thing for us is that nature piece. We will have our own space and we will really be able to do a lot of nature exploration. It will really fi t well with our philosophy.”

The new building, designed by Architect Peter Hilger, will feature two infant rooms, one waddler room (for older infants/ younger toddlers), two toddler rooms, four preschool rooms, one multipurpose schoolaged area, an art studio that opens up to an outdoor courtyards and three outdoor spaces.

“Everything we do is extremely hands on.

This new spot is going to be such a wonderful place for that to happen just because of the physical layout of the land.”

Helen Meissner, who has worked at Love to Grow On for 17 years, thinks the move,will greatly benefit the children.

“I think having a space where they can explore and having the freedom to claim the space as their own will be a benefit. When you are in a shared space you always have to be thinking about the other person, but now they will have a place to call their own,” she said.

“It is also nice to have a room that they are a part of designing. They get a say in what goes into the room and what is important.

particularly excited about the location. “I am excited for the new start, it is a nice new transition into the community and going where it is starting to grow and develop gives us an in to helping more families.”

Love to Grow On hopes to have an appraisal completed and to close on their loan by September and to start construction shortly after that. The project could be completed as early as March of 2019, but definitely by summer of 2018, Bartos King said.

“I think it is going to be an amazing opportunity. We have some really longterm, veteran staff, we have some new, fresh staff that are excited,” she said. “I think there is going to be a lot of opportunity for mentoring and collaboration. That's harder to do when you are split.”

Serving my country by waiting

T

he week of July 9, I had the opportunity to serve my country. I arrived at Ramsey County City Hall in downtown St. Paul at 8:15 a.m., ready to be diligent. After passing through security, checking in, and watching an orientation video, I sat in a plush chair in the Jury Assembly Room and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

Then we were dismissed for lunch. When lunch was over I came back and waited some more when I could fi nally leave at 2:30 p.m.

Intern The next day I waited fi fteen minutes before we were called Insights to … the courtroom.

There we had to fi ll out a quesJanice Collova tionnaire. What is your occupation? What is your education?

Have you, or someone you know, ever been a victim of a crime? If yes, please explain. Have you, or someone you know, been convicted of a crime? If yes, please explain. Ugh. How much did these people want to know about my life?

While the judge and attorneys processed the questionnaires, we waited two-and-a-half hours until the clerk fi nally said, “Come back tomorrow.”

I was called back for verbal questioning at 10 a.m the next day. I thought, “Perfect! I don’t have to wait! I can leave after thirty minutes!”

But — you guessed it — I had to wait.

I waited four hours. I was nervous the entire time. No period drama novel fi lled with romance could distract me.

Then I was called to the courtroom. There I felt like I was stretched out on an operating table for everyone to poke at me with vulnerable questions. But the main one that really jabbed me was, “Do you think you can be fair and impartial on this case?”

“I don’t know,” I said.

After the questioning, I was immediately dismissed from the case. I was instructed to go back down to the jury assembly room for any further assignments. Instead of an assignment, though, I got a sticker. Just like that, jury duty was officially over.

I was glad. No more waiting for anything. I could actually do stuff on my own accord.

But I was also confused. I just didn’t know if I could have been fair and impartial enough for the case I was questioned for. Had I just missed the whole point of jury duty?

Over 200 years ago, our Founding Fathers were tired of the British government passing over complaints and deciding what was what without reviewing the facts. When they declared independence, they demanded a trial by a random, unbiased jury so that justice could be dealt fair and square. Fast forward to the week of July 9, 2018, and our country is still trying to honor that demand. Did I just wait all those hours only to botch my chance to participate in our country’s judicial legacy of being fair and impartial?

Maybe not. I did swear an oath to be as honest as I could when I was questioned. And if I had to be honest about not knowing if I could be fair and impartial about a particular case, then so be it. I was probably doing everyone a favor. No one would have to wait for me while I struggled to come up with a verdict. Also, my dismissal could have helped somebody get a fair trial after all.

That is good news. What is also good news is that I get to be exempt from all this stress for four years.

Growing dahlias

D

ahlias are among the most colorful of all flowers and come in small, medium, large and dinner-plate sizes. Dahlias can be started from seed but are easiest started from tubers, which are the fleshy tuberous root of a mature dahlia.

Choose a sunny location with six to eight hours of direct sunlight. Plant in spring when all chance of frost is gone and the ground temperature has reached 60 degrees; late May is typically a good time. Dig holes six to eight inches deep every twenty-four inches. Lay the tuber in the hole on its side with any sprout three inches below the surface.

Before covering the tuber, drive a stake into the hole to help support the plant as it grows. Driving the stake at this time will avoid damaging the

tuber. Cover and tamp the soil.

Do not water unless your soil is very dry, then only lightly.

No watering should be necessary until sprouts appear above ground, then water lightly once a week until plants are well established.

Fertilizer may be applied after three to four weeks and again about August 1st. Dahlias are high users of nitrogen, but too much nitrogen will decrease flowers, resulting in tubers that do not winter well during storage.

Dahlias have some pests but a Sevin spray every 7-10 days when plants are 3-6 inches tall will control most of them. A systemic spray can also be used.

Remove this bud and any others with it. Doing so will improve plant growth and develop strong stems to support later flowers.

When buds reappear again and are ¼ inch diameter, they will be in groups of three or more.

Leave the largest bud and remove the others next to it. This will encourage larger flowers and avoid stems breaking under the weight of the flower. This is especially necessary for dinner plate flowers to achieve their intended size.

Dahlias will flower until the fi rst killing frost. Dig up tubers for storage 10-14 days after a killing frost, or Nov. 15, whichever comes fi rst. Stalks can be cut to 6-8 inches during this time. When digging, gently lift the entire clump of tubers, wash off all dirt and allow to dry. Divide clumps at time of storage or in the spring. Each cut tuber should include an eye.

Not all tubers will have an eye; those without eyes should be discarded, as they will not be viable. Store in cardboard boxes or crates lined with newspaper and suitable storage medium like wood chips, peat moss or sawdust. Store boxes in a cool dry area at 40-50 degrees — then think spring and enjoy dahlias galore.

Pizza for my dear Pops

M

y father, Pops, passed away a couple weeks ago, and it seems like everywhere I go or everything I do reminds me of him. I miss his crazy attitude and fun disposition, but most of all I miss eating pizza with him.

Pops loved to bake and cook. He also loved to eat at ďŹ ne restaurants or a dive. He didn’t care if it was ďŹ let mignon, pizza or a bag of Cheetos—he knew what he Wild Chow liked and the way he raved about what he Lisa was eating made you want some, too.

Erickson I recall when I was about 5 or 6, my sister and I eagerly anticipated his arrival home from work with groceries. He loved to bring home cheeses from around the world with lavosh crackers as big as our heads. He’d buy vegetables that we’d never seen before.

On the best days, he’d bring imported cookies “biscuits� or chocolates

from France, England or Belgium.

My favorite food adventures with Pops were when we went out to our favorite pizza place or when we tried a new spot. I especially loved when my family made pizza on the grill.

As my dad’s health and mind went the last few months, the only things he connected with were food—especially pizza. Not long ago, my siblings and I thought it would be a good idea to bake his favorite pizza at the nursing home. Disaster!

The grease dripped in the oven, and smoke poured out. MortiďŹ ed, we removed the pizza quickly, but dropped it onto the oven door. The smoke alarm went off, and the whole nursing home was in an uproar—not Dad. He sat at the table happily eating his pizza.

I’ll stick to grilling pizza outside, Pops—no more kitchen disasters. No wonder you and Mom cooked it on the grill.

Summer Grilled Pizza

Serves 6-8; 2 pizzas Crust 3 cups bread our 1 1/2 cups warm water 2 Tbsp sugar 1 Tbsp onion powder 1 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp instant yeast Optional toppings: 1 can pizza sauce 2-4 cups of Mozzarella cheese sausage pepperoni onions, sliced or diced green bell pepper, chopped olives, black or green

In a mixer* with a dough hook, place all ingredients for crust. Mix on low until combined. Let dough rest for 2 minutes. Mix for 6 minutes at low speed until dough is shiny and smooth. Place a pizza stone on the grill and preheat grill to 500 degrees or higher—about 10-15 minutes. Punch dough down, and cover again while you gather pizza toppings.

Roll out each crust with a rolling pin into a 14-inch circle. Generously sprinkle a rimless cookie sheet with 1-2 Tbsp cornmeal to prevent dough from sticking. Place dough on cornmeal. Spread sauce and pizza ingredients. Carefully slide the pizza onto the grill and close the cover. Check pizza bottom frequently and rotate if one side is cooking faster than the other. Remove with the cookie sheet and bake other pizza. *If not using a mixer, mix all the dough ingredients with a large spoon. Turn dough onto a counter sprinkled with our. Knead the dough by pressing down and turning and folding the dough over on itself with the heel of your hand for 8 minutes. Add more our if the dough is too sticky. Return dough to bowl and let raise. Proceed with the recipe.

Anoka County Library (ACL) launched a new summer program at Tidalwave Laundromat in June. Until August, all attendees will have opportunities to participate in librarian-led learning workshops and take home free books and educational resources. Librarians will work on site at Tidalwave Laundromat noon to 2 p.m.

Anoka County launches app to promote recycling

A new mobile app called Anoka County Recycles informs users how to properly manage waste and other unwanted items is now available for smartphones and tablets.

Anoka County Recycling & Resource Solutions launched the app to make recycling information more user-friendly and readily accessible when on-the-go. The app mirrors the Recycling and Disposal Directory found on the Anoka County website (anokacounty. us/recycle.) Users search for the item they want to dispose of, and the app will tell them

whether the item should be reused, recycled, composted or thrown in the garbage. For items that can be recycled at drop-off locations but not in curbside recycling, such as electronics, the app provides a list of convenient locations with contact details. The app is available for Apple and Android devices.

Books and Brew event to support Anoka County Library

The Friends of the Anoka County Library group is pleased to announce a fundraising event, Books and Brew, to support Anoka County Library from 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at Bistro La Roux, 9372 Lexington Ave. NE, Circle Pines.

Don’t let swimmer’s itch scratch out your summer fun threshold for such irritants, and once a person’s limit to that irritation has been reached, an episode is certain—unless you’re one of the lucky 20-25 percent of the population who has no reaction to cercariae burrowing into the skin.

But why chance it? There are steps you can take to keep yourself and your family itch-free and in the waters this summers.

On a hot and humid summer day, the waters of our local lakes look cool and inviting. But a quick dip to beat the heat may come at a price: many of Minnesota’s watering holes are hotbeds for a pesky parasite that leaves swimmers anything but refreshed.

Swimmer’s itch, also known as “duck itch” or “lake itch,” is the common term for cercarial dermatitis, is a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to parasites stemming from aquatic birds and mammals.

Swimmer’s itch life cycle

The parasite’s trek begins with infected animals—usually ducks, geese and swans as well as muskrats and beavers. The parasite produces eggs that are shed with the animals’ droppings into the lake water. Those hatching eggs transform into larvae who seek out aquatic snails for the next phase of their life cycle. The infected snails now release the parasite into the water in the form of free-swimming cercariae (from the Greek kerkos, “tail”), who are looking for waterfowl once again. The cercariae burrow into the skin of their host, not caring whether it is duck skin or human skin, in order to enter the animal’s bloodstream and begin the life cycle anew. Luckily for us, the larvae cannot develop inside humans and they soon die. But not before leaving behind red patches in the form of an itchy rash.

The swimmer’s itch–causing cercariae are transparent and only about 0.7 mm (1/32 inch) long, so they are essentially undetectable with the naked eye.

Preventative measures

Treating water with copper sulfate

City and county officials may take steps to treat lakes if they’ve received complaints of swimmer’s itch. When added to the water, copper sulfate kills snails, thus reducing that needed link in the parasite’s life cycle. The use of copper sulfate is by no means a “silver bullet” or cure for swimmer’s itch for many reasons. First, the compound will only kill the snails present at the time of the application; any snails that enter the area afterward will not be affected and can easily become infected by the cercariae alive and swimming in the water. Second, there is some evidence that snails may be capable of developing resistance to copper sulfate, which would limit the effectiveness of the treatment. And since copper is a toxic heavy metal, long-term, heavy applications of copper sulfate can pose a significant threat to the health of aquatic environments.

Keep it deep and windy, if you can

Two tactics you can take to avoid swimmer’s itch are to swim in deeper areas, not the shallows near shore (where cercariae tend to congregate) and swim where there is an offshore breeze;

Of course, if you’re hanging out with toddlers and babies by the beach, in waist-deep or shallower water, you certainly don’t have the luxury of escaping to deep and windy water.

Interestingly, the more days a person is in an infected body of water, the higher the chance of getting the skin irritation.

And the greater the number of exposures to contaminated water, the more intense and immediate symptoms of swimmer's itch will be. Why? Like our reaction to poison ivy or poison oak, swimmer’s itch is a response of our immune system to an irritant. There is a built-in

The DNR recommends taking these precautions to help reduce the odds of getting swimmer's itch: • Keep waterfowl away from your dock and shoreline. If you are feeding waterfowl (ducks and geese) from your dock, stop!

• Apply a water repellant substance such as petroleum jelly, waterproof sunscreen or other skin oils to reduce the ability of the cercariae to penetrate the skin.

• Dry off with a towel as soon as you get out of the water. When you get out of the lake, don't let the water evaporate off your skin. The organism in the droplets of water on your skin will look for somewhere to go as the droplet of water evaporates.

Veterinarians should be consulted for more than just illnesses. Their input is a key component of proper pet care. Having a solid relationship with the vet is in the best interests of the pet and its owner.

Open communication and familiarity with companion animals helps to avoid health issues before they appear, according to Dr. Krista Magnifico, DVM, and founder of Pawbly.com. Wellness exams facilitate discussion when the animal is not under duress and the general health of the pet can be properly assessed. According to the pet resource iHeartDogs.com, common components of wellness visits include the vet asking questions about exercise frequency, appetite, behavior, and any breed-specific issues. A vet will examine the pet, check gait and movement, as well as look at the eyes, ears and mouth. Routine vaccinations also are typically discussed and administered.

Veterinary Practice News advises taking a new pet to the vet a few days after he or she comes home, even if the pet’s medical history has been documented extensively. This establishes a clinical file and a relationship between pet and vet and vet and pet owner.

Her other siblings are also musical.

Joseph, 14, plays trombone and guitar; Becca, 11, plays violin and piano; And John, 7, plays piano and just started learning the violin. Rachel is currently attending the University of Northwestern for musical education and teaches violin.

Around her freshman year of high school, Stokes really started to get serious about pursuing a career in music. Originally she was debating on going to medical school, but decided she couldn't leave music behind.

“I had to pick something and I

couldn't let go of music. I thought of a life where I chose something else and just did music on the side and it just didn't feel right. It is something I love, so why not do something I love,” she said. “I know it will be a harder field probably than a lot of other things, but I am excited.”

When Stokes received the news that she was a Stamps Scholar, she couldn't believe it. “I was really excited and honestly kind of surprised because I had heard back from some other schools that I was accepted and I hadn't back from Miami yet. Then I was thinking I would go somewhere else and I heard back,” she said.

She was especially excited about Miami not only for the music opportunities, but also because she has always had a love for the ocean.

The Lexington City Council discussed the following at a workshop July 19: • City Attorney Kurt Glaser requested the permission of the council to negotiate a lease renewal with American Tower Corporation (ATC) for the communications tower near the airport.

• Discussed the preliminary 2019 budget. With only preliminary figures, the discussion focused solely on issues the council felt should be priorities to address in the budget ° Repairs to Jackson Avenue will be built into the budget. City and

maintenance crews are working i t ki to determine the best method of repairing conditions. ° Upgrading security at City Hall will be built into the budget.

City Administrator Bill Petracek cited concerns for the safety of city employees, documents and information and property as reasons this will be a priority. ° Suggested switching the city phone system to Roseville IT. The switch would not increase operating costs for the city and would cut costs in half after two years. Petracek stated the service transfer is recommended for better efficiency and a more user-friendly platform. ° Replacing administration computer equipment will be built into the budget. ° The renovation/remodel of the Lexington Fire Station will also be considered to be included in the budget.

After she graduates, her dream job would be traveling with a professional Ruth Stokes quartet and performing. She said she would also love to either sub or play in a professional orchestra someday, have her own studio and teach and eventually go to graduate school.

In 2006, Penny and Roe Stamps created merit scholarship programs for undergraduates at their alma maters – the University of Michigan and Georgia Tech. Since then, the

Stamps Scholars community has grown into a nationwide network of colleges and universities with more than 1,800 current scholars and alumni.
