Police reflect on incident in Dallas BY SHANNON GRANHOLM STAFF WRITER

Nearly 1.5 weeks ago, the fear of losing one's life as part of the job became much more real to police officers all across the nation. Even though the tragedy in Dallas happened on the other side of the country, it still impacts local police officers. Gunman Micah Johnson took the lives of five police officers and wounded seven more officers at a protest in Dallas July 7. Johnson told authorities he was upset about recent police shootings. Sgt. Bill Jacobson, who has been with Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) for 10 years, watched the event unfold live on TV. “In police work we are connected with officers from across the country in a unique way. Being a police officer is a unique occupation and surprisingly cohesive. When an officer is killed in the line of duty, we show our support for that officer and their families, because we can see ourselves in that

Junior chefs learn to hone their craft BY SHANNON GRANHOLM STAFF WRITER

CIRCLE PINES-10 students ages nine through 12 tied up their aprons and put on their hats to learn about healthy foods and how to make some new recipes. The Junior Chefs class, which ran July 11-July 14, was put on by Centennial Community Education. The instructor was Tiffany Cavegn, of Lino Lakes, who is a health coach and started a non-profit called Healthy Strong Kids of Minnesota this year. “My mission is to teach our young people how to cook healthy and also to provide food assistance for those families that need a little bit of help,” Cavegn said. Cavegn decided to start the organization after she was burned out from her 20-year career in marketing. “I remember being in middle school and my single-mother went back to school. We went from eating really healthy to eating boxed food. I didn't learn any healthy habits and I am overweight because of it, and I wanted to teach my children differently,” she said. Cavegn didn't learn how to cook until age 37, after she got married and started a family. “We traveled and ate out all the time. I wanted to change the cycle,

so I learned how to cook. I watched videos, took classes and I just tried in the kitchen. My poor family has been through so many experiments,” she said. A couple of Cavegn's friends suggested she start teaching classes so she did. This course was the last of three sessions offered this summer. So far she is only teaching courses in the Centennial School District, but she hopes to expand to other districts. “Parents are really busy now and the thought of teaching their kids to cook and the mess and patience that goes along with it is not always at the top of their very busy agenda, so my goal is to give them some basic skills so that they can learn to make healthy meals instead of going through the drivethru,” she explained. During the course the group focused on one recipe a day and learned how to make homemade macaroni, rice, peanut butter energy bites, chocolate chip cookie dough layer cake, chicken fajitas and pineapple salsa. In addition to the new recipes, the group also learned about using whole foods as ingredients rather than processed foods, food and knife safety and the importance of drinking water. Each student got a water bottle and if they SEE JUNIOR CHEFS, PAGE 2
