Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) Sgt. Matt Giese first became interested in law enforcement in the fifth grade when he was a school crossing guard.

He has now worked in law enforcement for 12 years, all of which have been with CLPD. Giese was selected at the Officer of the Year and was honored by the department and American Legion Post 566 with a special ceremony at the Police Governing Board meeting Monday, July 9.

“Detective Giese has always strived to make the law enforcement profession better in general, and the Centennial Lakes Police Department better in particular. He

is a well-rounded law enforcement officer who has regularly exceeded, above and beyond, the duty requirements of his positions,” said CLPD Lt. Russell Blanck.

“He is a Meritorious Conduct Award recipient who exemplifies the virtues of professionalism and dedication. He has also demonstrated a distinct pattern of service to his community and has proven his personal dedication to societal security and protection.”

Each year Post 566 asks CLPD and the Lino Lakes Police Department to nominate an individual they think is worthy of the recognition.

La Vintage LaRee opened its doors at 2K South Pine Dr. in Circle Pines. Owner Korrine ScottKline, a Circle Pines resident, was happy when the opportunity arose to relocate her business from Forest Lake to her own community.

“I am super excited to be here and that the community is excited to have me here. I just love the people,” she said.

Scott-Kline has owned the shop for 1 ½ years.

She previously worked in the real estate business before she decided that wasn’t for her and started painting again.

“I was a single mom of five, and I always wanted to have a really nice house but I didn’t have the money to do it,” she recalled. “I was a young mother so at a very young age my mom, my grandma, my aunties gave me things and I just started painting.”

Survey: People love community newspapers A 2018 survey by the National Newspaper Association showed that 90 percent of respondents say their community newspaper informs them. Seventy-three percent of the 1,000 people who responded to the readership survey also value the community newspaper because of the advertisements on local shopping.

In addition, 64 percent said they read their community newspaper either online or in print and community newspapers rate as the most popular advertising medium when it

comes to making decisions on what to buy and where to shop.

Of the 64 percent who said they read their community newspaper, 74 percent said they look forward to seeing the newspaper in their mailbox to read.

Also, 66 percent say they share the local paper with additional people.

Respondents also gave a high score to the importance of public notices in a newspapers as a way to keep an eye on what government is doing with taxpayer's money.

This is the first year of the survey, however, that the TV news edged out newspapers as the most prominent news medium that people rely on. Other sources of news like the internet, social media and radio did not fare too well in the survey.

The poll was done for the National Newspaper Association by Susquehanna Polling and Research in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Giese, a resident of Andover, grew up in Jackson, Minnesota. His interactions with police officers in the fifth grade, are what drew him into the profession.

“I was the post lieutenant, so I would supervise the people who were walking into the intersection...I grew up in small town Minnesota, so you kind of knew everybody. There were a few times I had to go find a teacher to call the police because somebody almost ran over a student, so I had a lot of interaction with the police. That’s kind of what started it all,” he said.

After graduating from high school, Giese attended Alexandria Technical & Community College for two years before heading to Fargo, North Dakota in hopes of finding a job in law enforcement. Although he didn’t find a job in his field, he did work as a manager of a plastics company.

In October 2006, Giese was hired

by CLPD. He has held the positions of patrol officer, field training officer, use of force instructor, detective and was promoted to sergeant June 3. Last year, he received the Meritorious Conduct Award for his instrumental role in implementing CLPD’s body cameras.

“While not a requirement for any of his assigned positions, Giese has become the department’s technology officer and in-house computer consultant. He has performed these functions without additional compensation and often without outside specialized training,” Blanck said. “He has been incredibly adept at teaching himself skills that the department would have had to pay

considerable sums to either send someone to training for, or engage the services of an outside consultant to accomplish.”

In his 12 years in law enforcement, Giese said what he enjoys the most is the people. “With the three cities that we serve, there is such a small-town feel.

Knowing a lot of the same people and being able to help out the community is such a wonderful experience. You get to see people grow up and change,” he said.

Even though Giese can be considered the department’s “tech guy,” he said the constantly changing technology has posed a challenge to law enforcement.

“In society we kind of embrace technology and you kind of have to, but it has been both a good thing and a bad thing for us,” he said. “The good thing is it helps us do our job more efficiently and the tough thing is some times it can cast law enforcement in a negative light.”

When Giese received the news that he was being nominated for Officer of the Year, he was humbled.

“When Lt. Blanck told me that he was going to nominate me, I felt quite honored to have his support, and the fact that he thought I was worthy of it.

For the Legion to come forward with it was very humbling. I am grateful to be a recipient and I feel very privileged that they selected me.”

Giese enjoys riding his motorcycle, woodworking, photography, hiking and golfing. He is married to Emily Giese, who is a police officer with the Coon Rapids Police Department. The two have been married for two years.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS Stolen car incident ends in crash

On July 8, at approximately 6 p.m., the Centennial Lakes Police Department was dispatched to the area of Little John Drive and Robin Hood Lane in Circle Pines on a report of a vehicle driving recklessly.

Upon arriving on scene, the first responding officer observed the suspect flee the area in a white Nissan SUV determined to have been freshly stolen from a nearby home. The officer attempted to block the vehicle’s departure with his squad car, but it evaded him by driving through multiple residential yards. Because of the significant danger presented to residents, officers elected not to pursue the vehicle, and it fled the area.

Shortly thereafter, the Ramsey County Sherriff’s Office located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. Again, the vehicle fled, subsequently crashing on Highway 55 near Hastings. The suspect, a 31-year old male from St. Paul, was seriously injured in the crash and was taken into custody and transported by the Minnesota State Patrol to Regions Hospital.

Multiple felony-level and other charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing. The initial vehicle the suspect arrived in was determined to have been stolen out of Cottage Grove. While no one in Circle Pines was injured, there was significant property damage to residents’ yards and property.

Weapons not toys

Around 7:22 p.m. July 6, Anoka County 911 received a report of a group of four or five people firing a semi-automatic firearm near a church in the area of Ash Street and Indian Hills Lane on the border between Lino Lakes and Circle Pines.

The 911 caller didn’t know if the gun was real or not, but multiple officers responded from the Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) and the Lino Lakes Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a group of young adults who had been testing out a new air soft rifle. Thankfully the call was resolved without the use of force and without any injuries.

The CLPD wrote on social media, “At a distance, it is nearly impossible to tell that this weapon is not a real rifle. The orange tip had been intentionally removed. These types of weapons are not toys. They can, and will, be easily mistaken for actual firearms. It is illegal to discharge these types of weapons in any of our cities.”

The matter is under investigation by the Lino Lakes Police Department.

Paying the piper

W

ith all of the introductory offers and shortterm (and supposedly free) deals we are bombarded with on a daily basis, I’m reminded of a story that some friends shared with me years ago about a trip to India.

The small group of travelers had just arrived in Delhi and were getting situated in their hotel rooms when they heard a commotion coming from the street below. When they looked out to see what was happening, they saw their traveling companion Keralee — a guileless and trusting woman who always seems able to see the good in people — happily riding down the street on top of an elephant. What started out a seemingly joyous introduction Angle of as into Indian culture, however, became a serious lesson in negotiation View when Keralee wanted to get down Paul Dols from the massive beast. There was no charge to get up on the elephant, but it was going to cost her to get down. I don’t recall the exact price that was negotiated with the elephant’s handlers, but by both Indian and American standards, it was not cheap.

This story comes to mind every time I’ve attempted to buy a phone, apply for internet and cellular services or worked to decipher a billing statement.

I’ve had conversations with several other people who also share the perspective that you have to be constantly vigilant in order to protect yourself from virtual pickpockets, swindlers or even worse.

Ever since I was among the 40 million credit and debit card users caught up in the Target data breach during the 2013 holiday season, I’ve been using cash instead of a debit card for smaller purchases. I never imagined feeling like an eccentric outlier for using the exact change to pay for a cup of coffee, but judging from the number of people I see using their cards, I suspect I’m in the minority. I’ve been occasionally inconvenienced, but overall I don’t regret using cash and believe the practice has encouraged more thoughtful deliberation and curtailed many impulse purchases.

Some of these allegedly free services are also influencing how we store and access our images and information.

I know I’m going to sound like a curmudgeon, but I’ve always been bothered by the term “the cloud” to describe data storage and computing. I think it’s because, for me, the ethereal term completely disregards the cost and tangible elements of vast numbers of computers housed in climate controlled buildings connected to an electrical grid.

While looking over various historical photographs and postcards for a mural project with Sarah Markoe Hanson, the executive director of the White Bear Lake Area Historical Society, I asked her if there was any consensus among historians about how history (and more specifically newspapers) will be preserved for future generations. She said there was currently a debate among historians about the use of digital media (like PDFs) versus microfi lm for archiving purposes. However, when a time capsule from 1940 was opened last month in downtown White Bear Lake, another time-honored information storage technology (print on paper) revealed its enduring value.

The airtight container was filled with well-preserved documents and newspapers. In her role as a historian and preservationist, Markoe Hanson said that PDFs (portable digital files) “are wonderful, an appropriate and accessible format for the moment, but for me, it always comes back to paper.”

I don’t know if anyone can predict how the details of this push into the virtual cloud will eventually be sorted out. All I humbly ask is that time-tested solutions are not completely discarded and that we’re informed about what the true cost of the ride is going to be before we climb up on the (figurative) elephant.

Fund suicide prevention efforts

t’s been a little over two weeks since the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report on the dramatic increase in suicides in our country. Calls to suicide helplines went up, some people made calls to loved ones and friends to check up on them, a few people took a suicide prevention class. Now what?

The fi rst suicide plan for our state was developed by the Minnesota Department of Health in 2000. At that time there was concern about the rising number of suicides — which was about 400 people a year back then. The legislature appropriated $1.1 million annually to implement the plan.

“The question now is will the legislature consider this a public health crisis and take action to increase funding for these efforts?”

But in 2005 state funding was eliminated due to budget cuts.

Funding was restored for the 2008-09 biennium only to be reduced for the 2010-11 biennium by over 75 percent. There was about $98,000 a year to fund community suicide prevention efforts. By the end of 2013, 673 people had died by suicide in Minnesota.

In 2015, the state legislature allocated $146,000 per year for suicide prevention, funding a part-time suicide prevention coordinator and three community-based grants, and in 2016 allocated $348,000 per year for suicide prevention, funding a full-time suicide prevention coordinator and six communitybased grants.

messaging and holding postvention trainings to provide technical assistance to communities after a suicide in order to prevent clusters and contagion.

A new statewide plan was developed to guide our efforts.

The goals are broad, focusing on preventing suicide but also reducing risk factors such as isolation, trauma and limiting access to lethal means. The goals also include timely access to mental health care, including crisis care along with better data collection to inform prevention efforts.

The question now is will the legislature consider this a public health crisis and take action to increase funding for these efforts? In 2016, 745 people in our state died by suicide. We need to take the number of lives lost seriously — famous or not — and fund the work to prevent further suicides.

Transparency: Those who can hide it, will We can’t rely on public officials to voluntarily surrender information

T

he commissioners in Guilford County, North Carolina, voted this year to move all public notices required by state law from local newspapers to the county’s website. Four companies that publish newspapers in the county recently ďŹ led suit to have the ordinance — and the statute that enabled it — ruled unconstitutional. If the lawsuit fails, Guilford will become the ďŹ rst county in the U.S. to completely arrogate to itself the responsibility Notes on for publishing its notices. There are many reasons why this is a spectacularly bad idea.

Perhaps one of the best is simple human nature: If you give people the ability to hide information that is embarrassing or otherwise inconvenient to reveal, nine times out of 10 they will hide it.

Earlier this month, elected ofďŹ cials and government employees in Robeson County, North Carolina, provided us with a timely illustration of how they hide unpleasant information when presented with the opportunity to do so. According to the county’s largest newspaper, the names of close relatives of two county commissioners were omitted from a delinquent-tax notice published in a local weekly paper. The Robesonian also reports it was the second straight year the names were excluded from the

A public ofďŹ cial in the county whose identity has yet to be revealed made it happen.

Perhaps even a better example came to us recently from Michigan, where late last year the state’s environmental agency published a notice about a Nestle Waters proposal to pump more groundwater from public wells for its Ice Mountain bottling plant in the state.

The agency knew it was a controversial matter since earlier attempts by Nestle to use public groundwater met with widespread opposition. Yet the only notice the agency provided about the proposal was posted on its own website.

The notice had been buried on that website for 41 days before a reporter from the Grand Rapids Press discovered it and wrote a story about the proposal. For those 41 days, the notice had attracted zero public attention or comment — not even from an environmental organization that has for many years fought Nestle in court to reduce the amount of water the company can withdraw from Michigan wells. Within the ďŹ rst three days after the newspaper’s story was published, the agency received 3,000 comments and the public

Traditionally and effectively newspapers—that are intended for general circulation, published regularly at short intervals, containing intelligence of current news of general interest— have published public notices because newspapers spark the curiosity and are delivered to the interested public.

The purpose of public notice is to display information in places where the public is likely to come into notice. The important premise is that information about government

Public notice laws in this country serve to outline the most effective method of reaching the public. Before a state designates a newspaper to publish public notices, states generally require the newspaper to have a paid circulation, a minimum percentage of news content, a local publishing address, and a continuous publishing history. The latter requirement ensures stability in the venue for public notices, so that the public will have a reliable place to search for public notices.

In retrospect, it’s pretty easy to see why the agency decided not to publish the notice in a local newspaper — an option it had been granted a few years earlier by the state legislature.

Public notice laws were enacted in all 50 states by previous generations that understood that some information is so important we can’t rely on public ofďŹ cials to voluntarily surrender it. So they passed laws stating precisely when and where such information must be

Centennial wrestler Emily Shilson has captured her loftiest title yet — world champion.

The Cougar senior-to-be earned gold at the United World Wrestling Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, on July 5. She took silver in the same event last year.

“I’m feeling great!”

Shilson told The Guillotine, Minnesota’s wrestling website. “I’ve been working since last year nonstop for this moment and it fi nally paid off. I just wanted to go out and wrestle my match and do what I know I’m capable of doing. I didn’t want it to be like last year.”

Shilson went 4-0 in the 43-kilogram (95 pounds)

weight class, becoming the first American to win a Cadet (age group 16-17) women’s freestyle world title since 2015.

In the finals, Shilson beat a 2017 world champion, Shahana Nazarova of Azerbaijan, 14-4, a technical fall. Nazarova had a 4-0 lead on two takedowns and was looking to turn Shilson when the Minnesotan snuck on top. She applied what The Guillotine called “that famous Minnesota gut wrench” and turned the match around.

“I always feel comfortable in my gut wrench, and I can put away the match with it,” she said.

Shilson has trained for years at Pinnacle Wrestling School in Roseville, under an Olympic silver medalist, Brandon Paulson.

She has been a USA Wrestling Cadet national champion the last two years.

She also won gold at the Pan Am Games, May 25-27, in Guatemala, and was named outstanding female wrestler there.

Her father, Chad, is the women’s wrestling director of Minnesota USA Wrestling.

Her brother, Tyler, had a 16-10 record with the Wisconsin Badgers as a freshman last year.

Shilson has been a state tournament entrant for Centennial the last two seasons, winning the section title this past year and placing second the year before. So far she is 0-3 at state in her quest to be the fi rst girl to win a state tournament match, but has another year. Her record against boys the last two seasons is 55-16.

Cougars new wrestling coach has Olympics training background Parker Betts, a veteran of several national competitions as a heavyweight wrestler, is the new coach of the Centennial Cougars.

Betts, 26, spent four years with the U.S. Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan University, attending college there. His resume included placing second in U.S. senior nationals in 2016 and fourth in University Nationals in 2017.

The Miss Lino Lakes Ambassadors presented the Cambridge Mayor's Choice Award from the Snowflake parade to the city council and invited them and the public to the upcoming coronation at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Centennial Middle School Performing Arts Center.

He reported the 13th annual ride was another success, with just under 5,000 bikes. He added there was one incident where a bike went off the road, but the rider survived and is recovering.

Woodruff presented a $500 check to the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department for its involvement in keeping everyone safe while passing through town.

• Held the fi rst reading for an ordinance amending city code chapter 1007 related to parking regulations for accessory outdoor dining or seating facilities. Several restaurants in Lino Lakes have approached the city regarding outdoor dining and seating facilities in regards to parking requirements.

Under the current ordinance, restaurants are required to provide additional parking spaces for accessory outdoor dining or seating facilities. Some restaurants in town would be unable to expand the number of parking stalls needed to comply with the current ordinance

due to their location.

The current ordinance requires 10 spaces for each 1,000 square feet of dining area. With the amendment, no additional parking would be needed if the area is under 500 square feet. City Planner Katie Larsen explained outdoor dining is seasonal, and the rationale for allowing less parking is because customers that would normally be sitting inside, are now sitting outside.

• Held the first reading of an ordinance amending city code chapter 1007 related to commercial kennel and commercial stable performance standards. City staff received a complaint that a property has too many horses than permitted based on the zoning and acreage. The subject site has operated as a horse training and selling facility for the past 20

years and is considered a commercial stable under the zoning ordinance.

Larsen explained the issue is whether commercial stables should be allowed more animal units than standard rural zoning district uses.

The planning and zoning board held a public hearing on June 13 and recommended approval of the text amendment with the following conditions: ° Commercial kennels be allowed on parcels 5 acres or less. (The current ordinance requires a minimum of 10 acres.) ° Simplify the proposed definition of “commercial stable.” ° Allow for adjacent parcels of land that are leased (versus common ownership only) to be used to determine the maximum number of animal units allowed.

• Denied a zoning ordinance text amendment regarding community solar gardens. On April 5, the city received a land use application from Lino Lakes Solar LLC requesting a zoning ordinance text amendment to allow for the construction of community solar gardens in the city.

On May 9, the planning and zoning board held a public hearing and recommended city staff gather input from the council before moving forward on drafting an ordinance.

The council discussed the topic at its June 4 and July 2 council work sessions. After discussion, the majority of the council was not in favor or the zoning ordinance text amendment.

The next city council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 23, at City Hall. There will also be a work session immediately beforehand at 6 p.m. in the Community Room.

CIRCLE PINES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Circle Pines City Council took the following action at its July 10 meeting: • Heard from Councilman Dean Goldberg who reported the Centennial Lakes Police Governing Board recently met and conducted a swearing in ceremony for Officer Brian Goetzke and recently promoted Sgt. Matt Giese. Giese was also recognized by American Legion Post 566 as the Officer of the Year. See the full article in this week's Quad Community Press.

Goldberg added the board reviewed the proposed 2019 budget, which is approximately $2.62 million (.3 percent increase from last year's budget). Mayor Dave Bartholomay explained that the .3 percent increase was for the entire budget, and Circle Pines' portion of the budget represented about a 2.5 percent increase.

City Administrator Patrick Antonen explained the council would likely see a pay voucher a month until the project is complete in August or September, adding the project is around 35 percent complete right now.

Councilman Matt Percy inquired if the project has had any setbacks or incidents and

Antonen said only one incident had happened so far, after a lot of rain caused flash flooding over Memorial Day weekend.

• Approved pay voucher No. 1 for the 2018 partial street reconstruction project in the amount of $261,451 to North Valley, Inc. Antonen said the project is around 60 percent complete with landscaping and sewer/ man hole work left to be finished. The project is on schedule and should be complete in a couple of weeks.

The next city council meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Family-oriented circus coming to nearby town

Two golden tigers, one African lion, a draft horse, a miniature horse, American eskimo dogs along with a dwarf cow, miniature alpaca, goats and ponies will soon fi ll Lions Park in Hugo.

Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will return to Hugo later this month. Culpepper & Merriweather is one of three active circuses that call Hugo, Oklahoma, or “Circus City USA,” home.

For many years, the Hugo Lions Club has sponsored the circus every other year as a fundraiser. The proceeds raised from the event support two scholarships given to high school seniors at Good Neighbor Days.

“It is a super family-oriented circus. Every person in that troupe is really nice and they are all family people,” said Lion Pete Pedersen. “For us it is an opportunity to have a community type of event. Even if the Lions didn't make any money, it is still the kind of thing the Lions like to do in Hugo. The Lions are very particular in how we spend the money that we get from the community.

Every nickel that we raise from the community has to go back to the community.”

Culpepper & Merriweather Circus will present one of its “best performances yet” for its 32nd year. With performers from U.S, Canada and Mexico, the show will have something everyone will enjoy.

“It's really quite simple.

We are classic Americana. We are a wandering family show, it's very much family oriented because it's our families in the show performing for your families,” said Leo Aceton, the clown. “It is something fun and safe that you can bring the whole family to and enjoy.

It really is for the whole family, it is not just something that you can tolerate as your kids enjoy.”

season with Culpepper & Merriweather. “I have been on tour with one show or another nonstop since 1998. It's my 20th year on tour so I am offi cially old,” he said.

Aceton grew up in what he calls “a regular family” and moved around to various states including California, Alabama and Wisconsin. “I always loved the circus but I didn't think that was actually an option,” he said.

Growing up, Aceton was involved in theater, music and band and at the age of 18 instead of going to traditional college, he decided to go to Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, which he described as, “a boot camp with bigger boots. I went to classes for 10 weeks, 13 hours a day, six days a week.”

The one-ring, big-top circus has been featured on National Geographic's Explorer TV series, Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune and “Under the Big Top” on A& E. For 32 weeks of the year, Culpepper & Merriweather brings an action-packed 90-minute show to over 200 towns in 17 different states. Typically they spend one day in a town, before hitting the road and moving on to the next town. “Hugo is kind of a holiday for us,” Aceton said. “Normally we get up at 5 or 6 in the morning and drive anywhere in between 10 to 200 miles, set up the big top, put on two amazing shows, tear it all down, get some rest

and do it again.”

This year's line up includes Miss Simone and her breathtaking trapeze, Miss Paulina's proud “Big & Little” prancing ponies, the Arlise Troup on their wild and crazy unicycles, Natalie's “American Eskimo Escapades,” Miss Georgina displaying flexibility to the extreme, the Perez family on the Wheel of Destiny and tight rope and performing jungle cats presented by Trey Key. Performances will be at 2 and 4:30 p.m.

Forest Lake happened to stop by and asked if she was a vendor anywhere and if she would ever consider selling some of her creations in her store. Scott-Kline was a vendor in the shop, before she became a vendor at Now & Then in Forest Lake, which she eventually purchased and changed the name.

La Vintage LaRee, she said means “the beautiful vintage store that everyone loves.” She described her store as “shabby chic, farmhouse, country, vintage... a little bit of everything.”

Scott-Kline mainly paints furniture, often with intricate stencil designs, but jewelry, artwork, games, essential oils, soy candles, birdhouses and more can also be found there.

“I honestly love the people. When people come into my shop, they are excited. They are looking for that one piece.

I love that they are happy when they leave,” she said. “If they don’t necessarily know what they want, but they can explain to me what it is that they are trying to accomplish, I love that interaction and being able to help them solve that problem.”

Being a single mom, she prides herself in having items in her store at varying price points. “Not everything in here is over the top. I believe you should never undervalue who you are and your work, but yet again I am still that single mother, so therefore I don’t want to gouge somebody because they want to have a beautiful home. I think our prices are pretty fair,” she said.

The store is also accessible, with wide walking paths throughout, and is often restaged to keep things looking new and fresh.

Scott-Kline is excited to start offering a variety of classes on Wednesday evenings at the end of August throughout the winter. Classes will include her very own “No Rules” painting class, upholstery, soy candle making, stenciling, paper marbling and succulent garden class.

She said she is always open to new ideas for classes, and hopes to host some classes geared at youth ages 12-15 to get their creativity flowing.

“One of the things I hate to hear is ‘I can’t do that’ because if I can, you can and if not we are going to have a heck of a good time trying,” she said.

The store hours are currently 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays, although Scott-Kline hopes to expand that in the future.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were dispatched to the 6500 block of White Oak Road on report of a possible abduction July 3. Officers were able to locate the individuals involved and determined there was no problem. The involved adults were issued citations for drug offenses and transported to a nearby business.

• An officer responded to a complaint of illegal fireworks in the 6900 block of Lake Drive July 3. An adult female was verbally warned for a fireworks offense and a small amount of fireworks were seized.

• Officers responded to the 81000 block of I-35E July 4 on report of a possible injury accident in which the involved vehicle struck a barricade. Upon the officers' arrival, they found the vehicle had struck a construction warning sign trailer on the left shoulder of the roadway and no one

was injured. Due to the damage to the vehicle, it was towed and the family was picked up by another family member who responded to the scene.

• A caller from the area of Elm Street and Lakeview Drive reported a Jeep driving recklessly in the area, speeding and not stopping for stop signs July 6. Officers responded to the area and were unable to locate the vehicle.

• Officers from Lino Lakes Police Department and Centennial Lakes Police Department responded to Lino Lakes on a weapons complaint July 6. Upon further investigation, several males were cited for prohibited discharge of a non-firearm in the city of Lino Lakes.

• Officers arrested a male for an outstanding warrant in the 6000 block of Otter Lake Road July 7. The male was also charged with fi fthdegree possession of a controlled substance, driving after suspension

and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

• An officer received a call on a group of possible underage individuals drinking alcohol and riding recklessly on a jet ski near the 7300 block of Main Street July 7. The group was not drinking underage and was spoken to about their riding conduct.

• Officers responded to a call of a disorderly male lighting off fireworks in a county park July 7. The suspect was identified but no longer present when police arrived on scene. The suspect was later cited for the fireworks violation.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of Glenview Drive and Sunset Avenue July 8. An adult male driver was subsequently cited for possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle and under 21 possession of alcohol.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers were flagged down by campground staff at the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park in Centerville regarding a camper who they wanted trespassed from the property July 4.

Officers completed the trespass.

• Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Restwood Road in Lexington July 5 on report of a single vehicle personal injury accident. The driver was treated at the scene and transported by ambulance to the hospital for further evaluation. The driver was subsequently charged for third-degree DWI refusal.

• Officers responded to a fight call in the 7000 block of Centerville Road in Centerville July 6. An adult was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm.

It was quite a day last Thursday, July 12. Hot, humid and wet.

Really wet with lots of rain. I totaled 2.60 inches of rain with much of it falling in about an hour. With that much rain in that short of a period, storm sewer systems were overwhelmed, leaving many roads flooded. I heard numerous stories of folks driving home from work who told me the rain was so hard you couldn’t see. Plus the intensity lasted well beyond the typical 20 minute thunderstorm. I’ve had three precipitation events this July that have totaled 4.82 inches!

Family of 7 embarks on religious journey abroad

Motorists traveling along Birch Street earlier this month likely saw the neon pink signs that read, “selling everything,” “everything must go” and “becoming missionaries.”

A family of six, soon to be seven, is selling nearly all of their belongings and headed south later this month to begin a four-month training to become missionaries with Family Missions Company (FMC).

Robert and Tami Erisman have lived in Lino Lakes for 5 ½ years. They met each other while working for NET Missions, a company that hosts Catholic retreats for high school students.

The two married in 2006 and are parents to Robert, 11, John Paul, 8, Annabelle, 6, Alaina, 4, Michael, 3, Merrillee, 2, and have another on the way in August.

Tami is a a stay-at-home mother who homeschools their children and Robert sells networking equipment with Dexon Computer, Inc. Although Robert always knew he would end up doing mission work, Tami did not always want to. At the age of 5, Robert was inspired to serve as a missionary after his school went on a day mission trip to eastern St. Louis. “It was like walking into a Third World,” he said.

Tami said, “When we were dating he would bring that up. He kept asking about it after we were married and asked me to pray about whether or not God was calling us to do foreign missions. I would pray about it for a day, but I felt if God was calling us, then he would put the desire to go on my heart too.”

Three years ago that desire was born.

“Robert called me out and said I hadn't prayed about it and I admitted I hadn't. I started praying every day and he put the desire on my heart. It was a 180. I went from having no desire to really having the desire for missions,” she recalled.

Robert and Tami started researching mission companies online and only found a couple that were specifically for Catholics, and only one that was not only for Catholics, but would send entire families on the mission: FMC. Last August, the Erisman family made the trip to Louisiana to visit FMC's headquarters.

On July 24, the family will head to Florida to stay with Robert's parents until Sept. 10 when they begin training in Louisiana and Mexico for their twoyear commitment. They will not find out where they will be sent until the end of November. Locations could include: Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Haiti, India,

Taiwan, Philippines or Tanzania.

“They will try to put us somewhere that is more established so that we can be mentored by the people who are already there. It is like a year in training,” Tami explained. “The second year we can choose to stay where we were sent, if we feel like that is what God is calling us to do, or we can move on to another place where they have missions going on already or some place new and start our own mission.”

While serving, the family will enter into already established ministries and do a variety of service projects such as reaching out to people who are sick, visiting prisons or building roads, homes, churches or wells.

“The real service is us living a very particular way of life with our family and then reaching out to other people in the community that we go to and inviting them to live a very particular way of life with us,” Robert said. “The real mission is to live with people, love people and serve them.”

One reason the family isn't too nervous about traveling is they have already done quite a bit of it while Robert served in the U.S. Marine Corps for eight years. The family lived on the East Coast, West Coast and even Japan.

“I think it will give us a new perspective on life and what is really important.

Hopefully it will give our children a different outlook on what is important in life and how to live your life with true happiness. A lot of times people look for happiness in things, in stuff that really doesn't matter. It is all about relationships,” Tami said.

Robert added, “We want to raise saints.

We want our children to truly be disciples of Jesus Christ and we want to respond to the gospel call.”

During the mission, the family will take a vow of poverty so they can better relate to those they are serving. The Erismans will be responsible for funding their mission entirely. In addition to donations, Robert said the family equally needs prayers.

“As Christians we are all called to be missionaries and go out, but God doesn't call everybody to do what we are doing,” Tami said. “So it allows other people to enter into the mission wouldn't normally be able to do anything like this.”

I don’t want to grow up

Third through sixth graders recently attended “Don’t Wanna Grow Up” camp, which explored the Mississippi River. While at camp, participants fished, practiced outdoor skills and explored the wild places around the Coon Rapids dam. In addition, campers searched the river and forests for crayfish, tracks, animals, insects and other natural treasures.

Commers visits Harvest Pack

More than 50 volunteers from Commers The Water Store in Blaine packed 22,653 meals for local food shelfs in Anoka County and the Sheridan Story Saturday, June 30. The Sheridan Story fights child hunger through community and school partnerships.

Over the past three months, Commers volunteers have raised $7,500 for Harvest Pack.

John Commers Sr. and his wife Evelyn founded the company in 1947, celebrating it’s 70th year of business last year. Harvest Pack founder William McNally was employed as a sales person at Commers when he founded Harvest Pack in 2011.
