City considers changes to programs BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — Due to an increase in Centennial School District facility rental fees, the city may now have to alter its parks and recreation programming — including the possibility of eliminating programs or staff positions — if the city and district are unable to come up with a solution. Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, Centennial Community Education began charging the Lino Lakes Parks and Recreation Department facility rental fees for all indoor/outdoor programs conducted on school grounds. Up until 2010, the city had a joint powers agreement with the district in which the city was only charged in instances where there was additional custodial or site supervision required on nonschool days. If the school was open, Lino Lakes was not charged. Public Services Director Rick DeGardner explained, “The rental charges are pretty significant. Total program fees so far for the fall, winter and spring total $9,178, that does not include any of our summer programs.” For fall 2016, the city was charged $5,168 in rental fees for seven programs. The total gross revenue was $874, making an overall deficit of $4,294. CCE now rents out facilities such as classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, media centers, outdoor fields and more. The fees differ depending on the space being rented and the type of organization or entity using the space. The fees are broken down by group A (school district, community education, tax-supported

Local kids pursue big baking dreams BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
Two students from the Kids Cooking School in Lino Lakes were just steps away from starring in the Kids Baking Championships on The Food Network. Kids Cooking School owner Tiffany Cavegn selected four students to apply for the show who she thought would not only enjoy it but would have an opportunity to advance and — if not — handle a rejection well. The students were Clinton KishBailey, 12, and his sister Anna, 10, of Blaine, Grant Bosacker, 11, of
Lino Lakes, and Amelia Olson, 12, of Andover. Both Clinton and Grant advanced far into the process. In fact, Clinton made it all the way to the very last step, but ended up not making the final cut. “He was maybe 10 days away from going to Los Angeles,” Cavegn said. “I was heartbroken for him, but it's also a life lesson, because you don't always get the job you want, you don't always make the team you want. At the same time, my heart was bursting with pride. They did so well.”
Kish-Bailey, attends the DaVinci Academy of Arts & Science in Blaine (relocating to Ham Lake). He first attended the Kids Cooking School over spring break to try out the “Pasta from Scratch” class. He did so well, Cavegn asked him to be her assistant and help out with classes this summer. “He had a good positive, curious attitude. Not only was he not afraid, but he was excited and willing to try things,” Cavegn said. “I could just tell he had a natural affinity for the SUBMITTED way the ingredients work together.” Clinton Kish-Bailey, 12, of Blaine, puts his baking skills Clinton's interest in baking stems
