LINO LAKES — A proposed 452-unit development for an area adjacent to Amelia Lake may or may not happen now, after the developer decided to withdraw the land use application.

The proposed development is a residential community located along County Road 54/20th Avenue just east of Amelia Lake. The site contains two parcels totaling approximately 40 acres and was to consist of 192 market-rate apartments, 20 twin homes and 240 senior assisted-living facilities for a total of 452 units.

“We have worked on this four, five or six years .... then we were told that area of land is not (available for development) until the 2030 Comp Plan,” said developer Tom Budzynski, of TJB Homes, Inc. in Blaine. He noted that former Mayor John Bergeson (2000-2009) and council were “all for it.”

John and Patricia Commers, owners of the land, visited the council at a November 2015 work session to discuss the possibility of developing their property. The work session minutes state the Commers had previously held discussions with the city about developing the land multiple times over the previous two years.

Most recently, the topic was discussed at the Planning and Zoning Board's May 10 meeting. No action was taken and city staff recommended the development be denied because it does not meet the goals of the land use plan, sanitary and water plan or the Comprehensive Plan.

Mint Salon & Spa expands to offer customers more green services

CIRCLE PINES — For around a year, now, a treasure for locals has been hidden, tucked away behind McDonalds on the corner of Lake Drive and Lexington Avenue.

Mint Salon & Spa, located at 43 Central St in Circle Pines, opened its doors for customers last July and many residents are still unaware it is there.

Kris Diemer, who has lived in Circle Pines since 1979, discovered

the business around five weeks ago after reading about the salon and spa online. “I was looking for a reputable, good stylist locally.

I looked on the Internet and discovered Mint, but I couldn't place it. I've lived here all these years and didn't even know it was there,” she said. “They are really hidden back there, and you just don't see them.”

Mint owners Crystal Sticha, of Sauk Rapids, and Amber Muellner, of Lexington, both worked at Ficocello's in Blaine before deciding

to start their own adventure; Sticha was there for 12 years and Muellner for eight.

The two bought the business, which at the time was Preeya Salon, and changed the name, expanded the business and changed the décor.

“There are no full-service salons in the area and we thought there was a need for that. We liked Circle Pines; we didn't want to be in Blaine. We wanted to stay small and tied into the community,” SEE THAT’S MINT, PAGE 10

Honoring local dads on Father's Day

Father's Day gives people a chance to honor their own fathers as well as the fathers in their community. At the White Pine Assisted Living facility in Blaine, Activities Director Pam Ludwig wanted to honor the many fathers who reside there, so she organized a Father's Day carnival June 16.

In the bright and sunny activity room, volunteers, family members and employees set up a variety of classic party games including mini golf, football toss, ring toss, a fishing game and more. Residents earned treats or tickets at each game that they turned

in for prizes.

Dave Stahl, originally from Chisholm, Minnesota, resides at the White Pine Senior facility with his wife of almost 60 years, Judy. They have one son, Doug, and one daughter, Donna, both of whom live in the state.

Donna decorated their current apartment.

Dave has a special relationship with his grandson, Aaron, who regularly visits his grandparents after school.

Aaron, 14, is known as “The Dude” at the facility. At the White Pine Father's Day carnival, Stahl enjoyed playing the “football game and the one with magnetic darts.”

Clarence Scheicher, an especially

popular White Pine resident and father of eight, also enjoyed celebrating Father's Day at the facility. He grew up in the Twin Cities and has lived at White Pine for several years; his room is packed full of photos featuring his large family, including his 16 grandchildren and his great-grandsons— twin boys—as well as a black-andwhite wedding photo featuring his late wife Mary and his siblings.

Scheicher and one of his sons, Steve, still spend ample time together on weekends camping in McGregor, Minnesota, where they recently had an especially exciting up-close encounter with nature. Scheicher said he opened the window shade to find “a great big

female bear peering in. But she didn't cause a problem ... she just kept on walking.”

Arlene Hauck and her husband Dick also celebrated Father's Day at the carnival. They have three children, Paul, Scott and Dan. The Haucks have nine grandchildren, boys and girls ranging in age up to age 20. The couple was also looking forward to going to a nice dinner with some of their children at Que Vet in Brooklyn Center that evening.

According to Ludwig, the highlight of the fun-filled day is “having people volunteer and come together to make the day special for our residents.”

Judging from the smiles on the partygoers faces, they certainly felt special.

American Legion ‘digs’ its new parking plans

LINO LAKES — A long sought-after improvement is coming to American Legion Post 566 along Lake Drive.

The veterans organization has spent about six years in an effort to buy adjacent property owned by the city of Lino Lakes to expand its parking lot.

Initially, the city declined to sell the property. Recently hired Club Manager Diana Cox, whose father was a veteran, then worked with the city to share what the Legion is really all about.

“We’re more than a bar,” she said. “If you (knew) the stuff we do for the community and the donations we just (made) … We are about taking care of that community.”

Kennedy said events that include members of the Legion's subsidiaries, the American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders, are just part of what is filling the parking spots at Post 566.

The Legion hosts multiple benefits during the year for residents; fundraisers that benefit Toys for Tots and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network as well as numerous C\celebration of life events.

Space is also available to the public for private events.

Many of these community events fill the existing 33-space parking lot quickly.

Some people park on the grass nearby, next door at the fire department, or leave without the opportunity to attended the event. In all, Legion officials say a maximum of about 38-40 cars can be accommodat-

ed on the premises currently.

This year, Kennedy and Cox rallied the Legion's executive committee. Committee members revamped the application process, organized plans and timelines and sorted through contractor proposals for construction, lighting, signage and financing.

Earlier this spring Kennedy and Cox presented to the Lino Lakes City Council with a comprehensive plan to improve parking at the Legion, complete with reasons why it was necessary.

Last month, Lino Lakes officials approved the sale of one of the 3 acres of land the city owns on the south side of the Legion along Lake Drive.

“I’m here to help dedicate the new parking lot, but I can’t find anyplace to park. You need a bigger parking lot or something,” he said, laughing.

The new lot will roughly double the number of parking spaces. Lighting and a new marquee sign placed out front are included in the project.

“There’s a lot of returning veterans, and they ride motorcycles. Part of the parking lot on the south side will have a motorcycle parking pad,” Kennedy noted.

The executive team wanted to keep the money spent on the project within the community if at all possible. “The sign folks (Spectrum Sign Systems, Inc. of Blaine) did the Lino Lakes sign, they did the Columbus City Council sign,”

Kennedy said.

First Resource Bank Senior Vice President Jim Herbert was on hand for the groundbreaking. “They’re buying land from the city. It’s staying within the city, it’s expanding on something that’s been here for a long time. Being a business banker, a commercial banker, a community banker, these are the projects that we really look for,” Herbert said.

Area residents and those who attend events at the Lino Lakes Fire Station next door undoubtedly will appreciate the additional parking, too.

“This is big for our community and those who have been trying to make this happen,” added Cox. Construction of the parking lot is scheduled to begin July 10 and finish in mid-August in time for Blue Heron Days.

Aging parents

I

n many cultures it is a great honor, or even a requirement, to care for elderly parents when they are no longer able to live alone.

Today’s ‘Boomer’ generation wants to live independently for as long as possible. When living alone gets to be too much, we have numerous options for assisted living cropping up all over our communities.

Few people stay in their home forever but leaving the familiarity of a home you have lived in for decades is highly emotional.

Having watched our grandparents go through the process of selling their homes and moving into assisted living, and being Publisher’s somewhat resistant, I think it’s advisable to begin downsizing View or assisted living options even Carter Johnson before you think you’re ready. It seems it would be easier to make the transition from the family home when you’re the one in charge, versus your kids telling you it’s time to move. Or worse, being forced to move from your home due to a tragedy or illness, and not being prepared. As we learned when we moved my wife’s grandmother from Connecticut after grandpa died, you aren’t guaranteed to find the housing you want without advance notice. We are fortunate to have multiple types of senior housing options available locally.

For those even thinking about the next step, keep in mind that it doesn’t hurt to go visit a few different options. Many of the senior communities have family-friendly events throughout the year that are open to the public, such as ice cream socials, concerts, art exhibits or breakfast events, which can be a great way to check out different places.

Or, simply call for a tour. Many of the people I know who have moved into assisted living situations have found they are happier being free from the burdens of taking care of a yard or cooking.

I just hope that I follow my own advice when the time comes for me.

Too much stuff It seems one of the biggest hurdles when considering downsizing is what to do with all your stuff. As our grandparents have moved and our parents have attempted to downsize or ‘get organized,’ many of their belongings have made it to our house. Some things are sentimental, and some items are vintage and cool, but a lot of it of it is stuff we just don’t need and will realistically never use.

It’s difficult to get rid of stuff that was once important to someone. You feel guilty for not wanting it. We recently discovered that we have seven incomplete sets of dishes and glassware that belonged to various grandparents. They are packed in six large plastic bins which take up valuable space in our basement. The thought in storing them is that our kids might want them someday. Chances are, they won’t. We know this, but we continue to hang on to all of it anyway.

That doesn’t even include some of the vintage dishes and glassware we’ve inherited that we do occasionally use, along with our own sets of china and wine glasses that we will probably want to pass down to one of our kids someday. And then they will store it all in bins in their basements.

Resale and consignment shops seem to be a good avenue to sell those things that are nice but that you may never use; or on the flip side, to buy items at a reasonable price. Our communities have several shops where you can find (or perhaps part with) such treasures. We also have numerous antique shops with unique items.

Perhaps grandma would have liked to know her dishes were being used by someone who appreciates them, rather than sitting in storage in your basement.

ummer is here and kids are making the switch from learning in the classroom to learning in other venues — summer camps, family trips, structured activities with friends.

Research shows that instilling a love for lifelong learning is key to long-term success for youth.

While we focus on these opportunities for kids, summer may also be a great time for “unlearning” opportunities for adults.

This Hromatka means it is a great time to think about unlearning negative beliefs that hold us, our families and our communities back.

Cain adds that some of these beliefs we may have learned as children. How many of us believe we’re not athletic, or not good at learning new things because we were told this when we were young? How many of us are wary of others who are not like us because we were taught by an adult that people with different back-

grounds or beliefs were not safe?

How we think about ourselves and the world affects what we do to ourselves and the world around us.

At Northeast Youth & Family Services, we see effects of negative beliefs every day. Kids who are told they are troublemakers at home or in school are more likely to get into trouble in the community. Youth who are told they’re not smart often don’t try as hard at school. People who are taught to mistrust differences are more likely to fear, and less likely to help, those who don’t look, believe or act like they do.

By the time we become adults, these beliefs and behaviors are so ingrained and common that it is easy to forget that they are there.

Cain suggests taking some time off this summer to make an inventory of what you believe about yourself and others. Cain adds that even an hour alone in a coffee shop can give you time to slow down your mind and ask a few key questions: How do I talk about myself when I’m with other people?

Is it in a positive or negative way?

If you don’t know the answer, ask a trusted friend to tell you the truth about what they see and hear.

Next ask yourself or a friend about how you talk to or about other people, especially those who you don’t agree with or see as different.

Do your words or actions hurt others as well as yourself?

These are hard questions, and we might not like all the answers we get. But Cain stresses that it is important to not judge the responses. Get curious instead. Ask yourself — when did I learn this?

Why, where or from who did I learn it? What is the damage to me and others if I continue believing this way? Does this way of thinking still serve me well today?

After you have made an inventory, pick two negative beliefs to unlearn: one that hurts you and one that hurts others. Consider how much better you and others might feel if you stopped these beliefs and behaviors.

The third step can be the hardest — making a change. Cain says be realistic: it won’t happen overnight. Our brains get accustomed to familiar patterns of thinking and doing things. Hanging out with people who demonstrate the beliefs or habits you want to develop, asking a friend to hold you accountable, or seeking professional counseling are three practical and proven ways to help you make the changes you seek.

If you hang in there and keep trying, you will be glad you did. Letting go and “unlearning” beliefs and behaviors that hurt ourselves and others benefits everyone — especially the kids who are watching and learning by your example.

Tips on insurance & storm damage claims

W

ith an early start to the spring severe storm season, Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman urges Minnesotans who experienced damage to their homes, businesses or vehicles to contact their insurance companies to start the claims process.

Rothman offers the following tips for Minnesotans affected by the storms: Notify your insurance company or agent as soon as you can to start the claims process. If possible, have your policy information available when you call. If you cannot locate your insurance company information, the Minnesota Commerce Department may be able to help you with a contact number.

Make temporary inexpensive repairs to prevent further damage. For example, board up broken windows or throw a tarp over a leaky roof.

Keep receipts for materials you buy, so you can be reimbursed. Do not make permanent repairs until your insurance company has inspected the damage.

Record the damage. Take photos or video if possible.

Make a detailed list of all personal property destroyed, damaged or lost. You will want to share the list with the insurMovers & ance adjuster. Do not throw out any damShakers aged items until the adjuster has inspectMinnesota ed them.

Dept. of Work with the Commerce insurance company adjuster. Your insurance company will send an adjuster to inspect the damage to your home and personal property. (Make sure your house number is visible or provide directions.) The insurer pays the adjuster, so you should not be asked for any payment.

The adjuster will provide you with a proof-of-loss form. Use this form to file a claim with your insurance company as soon as possible. You will receive your claim payment

after you and the insurer agree on the amount of the damages.

Keep records. Maintain copies of all correspondence, photos, documentation, and bills submitted to the adjuster and the insurance company. Keep good notes of your phone calls with your insurance company and the adjuster.

Watch out for “storm chaser� contractors. Once your insurance claim is processed, get estimates from local contractors known to you or recommended by someone you trust. Avoid “storm chaser� contractors from out of town who go door to door. Ask contractors for references and proof of workers compensation insurance. Check their license status and any disciplinary actions at www.doli.state.mn.us Insist on detailed, written estimates for repairs. Avoid high-pressure sales tactics. Some scammers will try to trick you into signing a contract by saying it is an estimate.

Your signature is not required to receive an estimate.

Prepare a written contract agreement with anyone you hire. It

should specify the work to be done, the materials to be used and the price breakdown for both labor and materials. Do not pay the whole repair bill in advance. Pay in full only when the work is completed according to your agreement.

Your homeowners insurance will generally cover removal of a fallen tree only if it caused damage to your house or other insured structure. There may also be a coverage limit for the cost of removal.

Storm damage to your vehicle may be covered by your auto insurance. Whether your vehicle was damaged by hail, a fallen tree or f looding, your loss may be covered as long as you selected ÂŤComprehensiveÂť or “Other than Collisionâ€? in your auto policy. Check your “Minnesota Insurance Identification Cardâ€? or call your agent or insurance company.

Contact the Minnesota Commerce Department if you have a problem with your insurance company or agent. If you have a complaint or cannot resolve your insurance claim, contact the Commerce Department for assistance.

Cougar hockey duo to CYHA: Thanks for great support during world tournament Centennial Cougar hockey stars Anneke Linser and Gabbie Hughes attended the May 26 meeting of the Centennial Youth Hockey Association (CYHA) to express gratitude for the support they received during their trip to a world tournament in January.

The two high-scoring juniors were chosen for the USA team that won the Under-18 World Championship tournament in the Czech Republic from Jan. 6-14. Eleven of the 22 players were Minnesotans, including the two Lino Lakes residents who’ve skated together since age 8, usually on the same line.

“Gabbie, Anneke and their families were so touched by the support,” stated a CYHA press release by Tamara Prato, “including all of the social media communications about when the girls played, and how people could watch the games from half way around the world. They said seeing the emails, tweets and posts on Facebook and Instagram were just awesome.”

Since Hughes and Linser joined the high school team in 2013, their mothers Miki Hughes and Sue Linser became involved in the booster club that supports the team, the Centennial Girls High School Blue

Line Club. Both mothers have worked closely with CYHA over the years to develop a strong relationship between the programs.

Golf manufacturers say people need to buy new clubs every four or five years because of technology advances, but I don't necessarily agree with that. It's more Tee Time important that your clubs are "fit" Betsy to you. By that I mean, are the Larey shafts the right flex for your swing speed? Does the lie angle on the irons allow you to stand correctly?

Does the length fit your height? It also depends on what is in your set of clubs.

Prior to the early 2000s, a set usually included a low lofted driver, a 3 wood and 3 iron through sand wedge. Then along came the hybrid club, which replaced a 3 or 4 iron. They are so much easier to hit because they have a lower and deeper center of gravity and they're shorter than a fairway wood. Plus, the trajectory is much higher than a long iron, which allows you to actually hold the green when you hit it.

If you watched the Mens U.S. Open last weekend, I'm sure you noticed some of the best shots of the tournament were played with hybrids into those difficult greens. I've carried a 3, 4 and a 5 hybrid for many years, and this year I added a 6. They are easier to hit and easier to stop on the green.

Tour Edge is making a complete set this year called the Hot Launch. I've had a couple of clients

who are playing them very successfully. They're great for people with slower swing speeds who have a hard time getting the ball airborne.

As far as fairway woods and drivers, a lot of it is personal preference. I do think that good players can hit 10.5 degree lofted drivers, but the average player would be better served by playing something like a 12 degree. Women and seniors with slower swing speeds might even look at a 14 degree driver.

The average player has a 3 wood in his/her bag. I think 3 woods are as hard to hit as a 3 iron because of the low loft, making it difficult to hit off of the ground. Therefore, I recommend a 4 or 5 wood instead. If you have a hard time hitting your driver off the tee, and many people do, why not tee off with this instead? Confidence is an important part of playing well, and a 4 or 5 wood off the tee gives you a much better chance of finding the fairway.

Finally, your wedges have more bearing on your score than any other clubs in your bag. And the average golfer has a harder time hitting them successfully. Most of it has to do with set up and understanding what the club is supposed to do.

But Calloway and Cleveland golf have finally realized the old fashioned "utility wedge" could work well for average to higher handicapped players. Bear in mind, these clubs have been around forever but no one has taken the time to update and market them.

Calloway has teamed with Hank Haney to create the Sure Out wedges, available in a 58 and a 64 degree loft. These clubs have a very wide sole which makes shots from the sand and deep rough much easier.

Better yet is Cleveland’s Smart Sole 2.0 wedges. Cleveland worked with Dave Pelz on the design. I like these better because they make two different clubs for different shots. The C wedge is 42 degrees, which acts like the old chippers you used to see. The loft on this club is similar to a 9 iron, so it's a great choice to play a bump and run pitch shot from the fairway. The reviews have been outstanding, and I can't wait to try this club out!

The S wedge is 58 degrees and acts like a sand/lob wedge, which makes it the perfect choice from the sand and all those little touch shots around the greens. Both clubs have a similar look (sleek black head) with a wide and forgiving sole.

So if you're in the market for new clubs, or just looking to add a few new ones to your set, consider finding something that actually is designed to work for your game and not the pros.

ance with the city's Comprehensive Plan. “Our Comprehensive Plan has the 40 acres guided for urban reserve.

There can be no more than one unit per 10 acres. They were proposing 452 units. That's a problem,” she said.

“We didn't have this guided for high-density residential development.”

The purpose of an urban reserve area is to preserve land for post-2030 development. The intent is to promote cost-efficient planning by preventing premature expansion of urban services and ensure an orderly and efficient expansion of future urban services. “Going from four housing units, which would be allowed today, to 452 units, that was our big concern,” Larsen said. “At the end of the day, it was a premature development.”

Another concern was that public utilities, including sanitary sewer and water, are not currently available to support the development. Budzynski said TJB Homes had previously talked to White Bear Lake Township representatives about the possibility of hooking into the township's sanitary sewer and water services and the city didn't think it would be a problem at the time.

“We talked with their engineers, got some prices and everything was workable and reasonable for what we wanted to do. Based on that, we pushed ahead. We spent $100,000 in our presentation to the city,” he said. “Then all of a sudden ... we were supposed to be a part of a meeting with White Bear (Township) and Lino Lakes and it didn't happen. Then it just so happens that White Bear, due to some litigation, is not going to expand its sewer line in the near future.”

A draft feasibility report for the Lake Amelia utility extension project was prepared by town engineering firm TKDA for White Bear Township in December 2014. The report's preliminary conclusions stated the existing sewer on the south side of County Road J contained adequate capacity for up to 300 residential units; sanitary sewer and water would need to be extended approximately 2,000 feet; and the project would cost approximately $750,000. It also found that a new lift station at the southern end of the property would be required.

The Planning and Zoning Board and City Council were set to take action on the required Comprehensive Plan amendments for the proposed development in June, but TJB Homes withdrew its land use application due to the issues with the utility connection to White Bear Township's system.

“It was going to be a real benefit to the city. We had a 150- to 200-foot buffer all the way around the lake, trails, a very large park and some nice amenities throughout the whole development,” Budzynski said. “This was going to be a huge tax base, plus a compliment to the city and a benefit to retail establishments across the road. At every turn, we were told, 'We are not going to recommend that.'

We've heard that so many times.”

Plans for the development are up in the air, Budzynski said, until TJB Homes, Inc. can participate in some more conversations with the township regarding the utility connections.

CENTENNIAL SCHOOL BOARD NOTES The Centennial School Board took the following action at its June 12 meeting: • Heard from Superintendent Brian Dietz that the first graduate walk was a success and the district plans to do it again next year. Graduating seniors were invited to visit their elementary schools in their caps and gowns to inspire the young ones and visit their former teachers. More than 300 graduates participated.

Dietz also thanked everyone involved in the planning and execution of graduation and the senior all-night party.

More than 400 students signed up for the party.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included May 22 meeting minutes, monthly disbursements, personnel, field trips, gifts to the district, dues and memberships and an athletic training program services agreement.

• Received a staff development update from Curriculum and Staff Development Coordinator Jane McDonald on the professional learning activities that occurred over the 2016-17 school year. McDonald explained the three main goals included a cultural piece/ talking about relationships, collaboration and informative and summative assessments.

• Approved the annual Q Comp (alter-

native compensation system) annual report. Q Comp facilitator Kimberly Davidson explained the district has around 70 professional learning communities (PLCs) made up of teachers in grade levels or common subject areas.

“They work together on common content. The primary focus is on four main questions: What do we expect our students to learn? Are our students actually learning and performing at the proficiency level we expect?

If our students aren't performing at that level, what do we need to do? If we have pockets of kids who have already met proficiency, or are above those expectations, what do we do to ensure that they continue to develop?” Davidson explained.

• She also relayed some staff survey results on the subject of PLCs. Feedback included: • 96 percent felt they were able to collaborate with colleagues outside of their grade level/or building.

• 92 percent felt comfortable with the direction their PLC was heading.

• 90 percent felt they contributed to the PLC and that their contributions were valued.

• Approved the 2017-18 preliminary budget. Executive Director of Business

Services Brady Hoffman explained the total revenues are budgeted at about $99.4 million and the total expenditures are at approximately $106.7 million. “The main reason for the deficit spending is related to the capital spending and the referendum funds. We are projecting about $6.8 million of capital project funding that will carry over the rest of the summer and into the next school year,” Hoffman expalined.

The general fund included an unrestricted projected fund balance of 9.35 percent, which is above the board's minimum policy of 8.33 percent.

• Authorized the issuance of individual purchasing cards. Hoffman explained the district currently has three credit cards that are used within the district.

The resolution authorizes Hoffman and Dietz to enter into a purchasing card agreement through PFM Financial Services and BMO Harris Bank.

• “This will allow us to more easily track our credit card activity. We currently have regular credit cards, which we don't really see until we get the statements; it is not something we can actively be monitoring throughout the month as things go along,” Hoffman explained. “This will allow us to keep track of who is spending what

and allows us more control ... and make sure that these cards are being used appropriately.”

The three departments that will be given card access include teaching and learning, community education, and technology.

• Approved Gallagher Benefit Services Inc. as the agent of record for medical and dental group insurance. Periodically, the district initiates a request for proposal (RFP) process for various products and services to ensure the district is receiving the best services at a competitive price. The last time the process was completed for insurance was in 2011.

RFPs were sent to six firms; five responses were received. Gallagher was unanimously chosen as the best option. The transition will be effective July 1. The district's previous agent of record was National Insurance Services.

The next Centennial School Board meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. July 10 at the District Office.

Sticha explained. Muellner added, “It is very tight-knit. Everybody knows everybody.”

The two women wanted to work at a salon based on the recently emerging industry business model that allows stylists to rent their chair or space for a flat rate and work for themselves.

“We really wanted a nice rental salon for people. There are not a lot of fullservice salons in the area that allow women to work for themselves and make their own money. Working for a large company, they take so much of your money,” Sticha said. Muellner added, “They have more freedom, and people are happier in general working for themselves.”

Both Sticha and Muellner are grateful for their time at Ficocello's because it gave them strong work ethics and a foundation in training.

They know the importance of ongoing education and have in-house classes quarterly.

“We wanted a shabby chic vintage theme. We wanted a word that would be easy to remember, but still have the vintage feel, and 'Mint' came to mind,” Sticha said. “People used to say 'That's mint, that's cool, that's fresh.'” Muellner added, “People walk in and they feel at home. They are welcomed and they don't feel like anyone else is judging them.”

The business prides itself in promoting wellness and tries to keep its products and services as natural as possible.

“We wanted to do a cleaner salon.

We try to have product lines that don't have the sulfates, paraffins or other chemicals,” Sticha said. Muellner added, “We want to have safer options

for people and want to educate people that what they are putting on their bodies can have an effect, because a lot of people don't realize that.”

The full-service salon currently offers styling, hair color, smoothing treatments, perms, extensions, fullbody waxing and laser hair removal.

The spa offers facials, air brush makeup, lash extensions and lifts and customized massages.

Diemer decided to stop into the salon one day to chat about a hair dye allergy. “I was very impressed with the knowledge (Sticha) had and the customer service. Everybody was very attentive,” she said. “We didn't have anything like that locally in the Circle Pines or Lexington area.”

Mint Salon & Spa will now offer even more services to customers, as it is the middle of an expansion. The project will add 800 square feet to the business which became available after Paradise Tanning closed. This will give the salon and spa its own restroom; currently, Mint shares a communal restroom with other businesses. “(The purpose) is to create a tranquil side. When people walk out of the massage or facial room, they are in a bright atmosphere with a lot going on.

We would like to offer spa packages where someone can put a robe on, get a facial and then walk to the massage room without being in the entryway or the middle of the salon,” Sticha said.

“We want it to feel more inviting for the people who want a relaxing spa day.”

Mint plans to add another aesthetician and massage therapist, making it possible to offer couple massages. There will also be an infrared sauna, which has many health benefits.

“It is good for any inflammatory

issues; it increases your white blood cell count and it's a detoxifier,” Sticha explained. “Sitting in the sauna for 30 minutes, you'll burn 400-600 calories.”

Muellner added, “Your body is always going through stress mode and recovery mode, so it brings you back to that recovery mode a lot faster,” she said.

In addition, the infrared sauna can be beneficial to people undergoing chemotherapy or other forms of cancer treatment. After the expansion, Mint will also offer a noninvasive liposuction and plans to have a doctor visit monthly for fillers such as botox and Joviderm. In the future, Mint also hopes to offer spray tanning.

Mint Salon & Spa will hold a grand opening from 5:30-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26 to display its new space.

Big Earth comes to Tiny Tots

LINO LAKES — Students attending Centennial’s Extended School Year (ESY) classes got a treat from Mother Earth. Stefan Knutson, of Circle Pines, brought the 20-foot diameter, satellite image balloon replica of the planet to the middle school for learning and exploring.

Knutson's father, David Knutson, developed the balloon in the early 1990s after working with different models and architects for two decades. He created Earth Balloon Inc. in 2001 and the nonprofit Earth Adventure in 2005.

What started as a hand-painted set of 24 panels on a basement floor has turned into 24 panels commercially printed with more than 3,000 satellite images from NASA. “We have seams every 15 degrees; that breaks the balloon into 24 panels, (and they) act as time zones,” the younger Knutson explained. “We do things with measurement and scale — one inch on the Earth Balloon is 30

miles in real life. So we can see how big things are, how far apart things are.”

The students took their shoes off and stepped inside the large balloon which is kept inflated with a large fan, not a generator. “The benefit of going inside (is) you can see everything, all the land, all the oceans, everything is to scale,” Knutson said. Shading indicates depths of the oceans, and underwater mountains are visible.

Knutson, a Centennial graduate, was on familiar turf. “I went to this school (Centennial Middle School), (and) my dad would bring it here,” he said. Now he is the father with a child attending Blue Heron Elementary. “I did the same thing for my daughter; she was in kindergarten this year.”

Knutson said the family-owned business travels all across the country teaching kindergarten through grade 12 about science, geography, environmental science and current events.

Kids get a taste of acting during summer show

LINO LAKES — More than 50 students ages 7-16 spent a week of their summer memorizing lines, learning choreography and making new friends, all to put on two full-length productions of “Cinderella” on Friday, June 16 at Centennial Middle School.

The show was organized by Prairie Fire Children's Theater (PFCT). This is the second time Centennial Community Education has teamed up with PFCT. The professional touring company is based out of Barrett, Minnesota and has been bringing a theatrical experience to communities across the upper Midwest for 30 years. PFCT tours year-round to bring a variety of original musical adaptations of classic tales to communities.

Some of PFCT's shows include: “Alice in Wonderland,” “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Midsummer,” “Peter Pan,” “Pinocchio,” “Robin Hood,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Snow White,” “Tom Sawyer” and “The Wizard of Oz.” “We want to bring theater to areas that aren't necessarily exposed to theater. It is an opportunity for kids who might not necessarily get the chance to be in a show otherwise,” said Danny Griffin, a PFCT tour director/actor. “Our shows have the the capacity for a total of 78 kids, because we want to give as many kids as we can an

intro to theater.”

This is Griffin's first tour with the company. He is from Atlanta, Georgia.

Soon-to-be eighth-grader Lauren Berge played Cinderella. Although this was her first performance with PFCT, she has been in productions through school and attended acting camps.

Berge wanted to do the production not only because her friends were participating, but also because she “loves acting and learning how to be better at it.”

She enjoyed playing Cinderella, because she love being in her shoes, or glass slippers. The main challenge for Berge was learning when to say her lines.

“I made a lot of new friends and we enjoyed helping each other out with our lines and watching each other grow,” she said.

Skylar Kangas, who will be an eighth-grader this year, played one of the evil stepsisters. This was her first time acting in a production, but she wanted to give it a try because she “thought it sounded fun and her friends were doing it.”

She added, “I enjoy being evil.

(My character) is evil, but she is misunderstood.”

The biggest challenges for Kangas were figuring out when to say her lines in addition to learning all of the choreography for different dances.

‘Lifting the cloud’ of diabetes with a special dog

Since her diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes in 1989, Madyi Stangl has felt that the disease has “placed a cloud” on her life — limiting her ability to travel and live life.

But that cloud has lifted for the Minneapolis resident, thanks to a special golden retriever named Willy.

Willy is a diabetes assistance dog that was given to Stangl by Can Do Canines, a New Hopebased nonprofit that trains dogs to help people who live with diabetes, autism, seizures, hearing loss and mobility issues.

Madyi and Willy “graduated” in a class of 14 on June 10.

Willy was named by Wilma Audrey Loken, who donated money to Can Do Canines. She died before Willy graduated, but her two daughters, their husbands and her son attended the graduation ceremony. One daughter, Beth Brostrom, and her husband are members of the White Bear Lions Club.

Willy can detect changes in Stangl’s blood sugar levels by scent. He alerts Madyi to high or low blood sugar levels by touching her with his paw. If she doesn’t respond, he will whine or whimper and eventually do whatever he needs to do to get her attention. He is trained to bring glucose tablets or even a cell phone to Stangl.

Recently, Stangl had a “scary” low of 36 during the night. When she failed to respond to Willy’s touches, he laid over her body until she woke up, checked her blood sugar levels and ate food to bring her levels back up to normal.

Can Do Canines has produced nearly 600 teams of dogs and their human companions since opening in 1989, according to Sarah Schaff, client services coordinator.

The organization can give away the dogs, which are sold by other organizations for $20,000 or more, because of volunteers and many donors, Schaff says.

Funding comes from donations from individuals, companies and

grants. Schaff reports that the organization does not receive any state or federal funds, relying solely on donations, fundraisers and bequests.

Puppies are bred in a cooperative program with other certified service dog organizations and raised by volunteers. Many receive their initial training in six Minnesota and two Wisconsin prisons.

Schaff notes that the prison environment is good for the dogs as well as the inmates.

“It gives dogs a 24/7 taste of what life will be like when they are working,” she says, adding that there are many studies pointing to the therapeutic benefits for the inmate handlers as well.

The organization has a screening process to find suitable candidates to match with dogs that are in the system or are in training.

It takes two years to raise and train a dog to be an assistance animal, Schaff said.

Madyi works as the operations lead for the University of Minnesota Physicians and Willy accom-

panies her to work. He alerted a diabetic co-worker of Stangl to a low blood sugar level.

Stangl grew up with dogs and reports that having Willy around is like “having a big security blanket that I carry with me all the time.” She is now more confident as well.

“Even though I’m going to continue on as this girl with this physical reminder of my disability, I’m a little prouder because I’m able to shed light on diabetes.

Diabetes is an invisible illness, something that needs to be seen because it’s not something to be taken lightly,” she said.

Even though Willy is a beautiful and friendly dog, Stangl asks that people refrain from touching him or any other assistance dog without permission of the owner.

“When we are out in public and Willy is wearing his vest, it’s important not to make eye contact or distract him,” Stangl says. “He is working for me, and if he gets distracted, he stops working, and that could be dangerous.”

ACHS ' Mischievous Memories': The reminiscences of Mary Woodbury In the late 1920s, Mary Woodbury set pen to paper for a presentation about her experiences in early Anoka to a group of descendants from the colonial era. Nearing the age of 70 when she wrote her reminiscences, Mary preserved a critical view of the county back in its infancy of lumber mills and flour mills, railroads and relations with several native cultures.

Mad Hatter Tea House and the Anoka County Historical Society (ACHS) will offer the “Mischievous Memories” tea featuring a special appearance by Woodbury from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 28 at the tea house. CITY OF CENTERVILLE ANOKA COUNTY, MINNESOTA ORDINANCE#86 SECOND SERIES AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CITY CODE ESTABLISHING A PERSONNEL BOARD THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CENTERVILLE ORDAINS: Section 1. The City Code is hereby amended by inserting a new Section into Chapter 31 as follows: SECTION 31.03. ESTABLISHMENT OF PERSONNEL BOARD Subd. 1. The purpose of this section is to establish a Personnel Board.

The Board is a subset of the City Council that can act with greater Áexibility than the Council. The Board’s main purpose is to research and investigate high-level and policy level personnel matters for the limited purpose of making recommendations to the Council. The Board is also granted a limited role in speciÀed areas calling for the immediate involvement of members of the Council; subject to ultimate ratiÀcation by the Council. The Board is not intended to involve itself in the day-to-day operations of the City or infringe on the authority of the City Administrator.

Subd. 2. Establishment and Composition. A Personnel Board is hereby established and shall consist of two members of the City Council and the City Attorney. The Board is an ad hoc board of the Council, and the other provisions of this chapter shall not apply to its operations and duties. The Board shall convene only when necessary to fulÀll its duties.

Subd. 3. Duties. The Personnel Board shall have the responsibility to: a) Evaluate the work performance of the City Administrator; report same and make appropriate recommendations to the Council; b) Examine employment related activities and policy questions in order to make recommendations to the Council; c) Assist with union contract negotiations; and, d) Make recommendations to the Council for the hiring, termination or suspension of any Department Head or City Administrator. The Board may take interim action to suspend any Department Head or City Administrator for violating the law as it relates to employment or criminal behavior, dereliction of duty, or other employment infractions effective until the next Council meeting when they may afÀrm, modify or rescind the suspension.

Subd. 4. Notice and Reporting. All members of the Council shall be notiÀed when the Board convenes. When advance notice is not practical, notice shall be given within one business day of convening. Notice shall include stating the reason and purpose for convening. The Board shall report its meetings and Àndings to the Council. Notice and reporting shall be consistent with the Minnesota Data Practices Act and other applicable law.

Section 2: Effective Date: This ordinance shall be effective immediately upon its passage and publication of the attached summary according to law.

In winter there were serviceable woolen gowns, and for Sunday sometimes we had silk dresses made from the remnants of worn out raiment of our mothers, but the one that was my greatest joy was a five cent calico that Mrs. Gow and I first saw at Mr. Teller’s store.

It was, as I remember it, yellow with an all-over pattern of brown and brown polka dots, and we felt that life would be empty it we could not have dresses of it. So we rushed home, and importuned our mothers for that elegance and luxury, and they generously consented. We felt that we were the most fortunate children in town, and proudly wore our five cent finery till it almost dropped from our persons, and when past all mending, I begged my mother to make an apron of

the remains, so that I could always keep it. Indeed, I think it is somewhere in the house still.

Our shoes were good stout calfskin, and stout ones were needed for our strenuous life. I think I have already told you how Mrs. Gow (Maria) and my brother and I navigated the low grounds back of Dr. Kline’s sanitarium and residence.

That land, during a spring flood, was once covered with water from one to five feet deep, and we, having a barn or cellar door that we salvaged from the flood wreckage, joyfully poled it around in the shallow inland sea between the Rum and the Miss[issippi]. Why we were not swept in[to] the boiling Mississippi Flood, is one of the eternal mysteries necessary to permit healthy and adventurous children to grow to maturity, “Those born to be hanged cannot drown or suffer from firing squads.”

Fitzgerald conference turns back time in White Bear Lake

The International F. Scott Fitzgerald Society conference is coming to St. Paul, creating ripples that stretch to White Bear Lake this June.

The famous writer was born in St. Paul and spent summers visiting friends in the White Bear Lake area. In the summer of 1922, he lived with his wife Zelda and daughter Scottie at the White Bear Yacht Club. Rumor has it that the Fitzgeralds were so rowdy that they were kicked out of the club, but White Bear Lake writer historian Mary Jane LaVigne thinks that the story might have been exaggerated.

The conference corresponds with the events of Manitou Days, so LaVigne has worked with the conference to establish a new event that highlights the Fitzgerald's connection to White Bear Lake.

On Tuesday, June 27, White Bear locals and conference attendees alike are invited to “Turn Back Time Tuesday.” Guests are encouraged to dress in a historic style of clothing from anytime during Fitzgerald's lifetime — from the late 1800s to the 1940s. The event will take place at Boatworks Commons 4-5:30 p.m.

“It's kind of interesting, because the Fitzgeralds were living in White Bear Lake in 1922, and the calendar is the same in 2017, so Tuesday, the 27th would have been a date the Fitzgeralds were actually living on White Bear Lake,” LaVigne said.

Old vehicles and boats are also encouraged at the event, and those who participate will receive complimentary lemonade and cookies — Oreos and Lorna Doones, just like in Fitzgerald's time.

LaVigne said she also hopes to arrange live 20s-style music.

The conference, which lasts June 25-July 1, will host a slew of Fitzgerald-themed social events around the Twin Cities and beyond. Although not open to the public, some conference attendees will

also get a chance to attend a presentation at the White Bear Yacht Club given by Arlyne Bruccoli, a Fitzgerald memorabilia collector who personally knew Scott and Zelda's daughter Scottie. Mark Mammel, who wrote a book about the Yacht Club's history, will also give a presentation.

“Most of (of the conference events are) in St. Paul,” LaVigne said. “They have some really great tours and other public events, including a fun pool party at the Athletic Club, and a St. Paul Saints game on Saturday, July 1, that some White Bear people will be participating in too.”

In 2016, the White Bear Center for the Arts (WBCA) hosted an educational series about Fitzgerald's connection to the community, taught by LaVigne.

“A lot of people came with stories and had a lot to add to the story,” she said. “That was a very valuable thing that the art center did because they helped to create more of a historic record.”

WBCA was also instrumental in helping LaVigne coordinate the the event, along with the White Bear Lake Historical Society.

LaVigne said that being involved with the conference has also aided in her own Fitzgerald scholarship.

“I'm an essayist; when I write I kind of digest an experience, so I'll probably write about this as part of the story,” she said. “It's allowed me to have some standing as an independent scholar.”

LaVigne was able to get special permission from Princeton University to borrow a copy of a page from Zelda's scrapbook.

“It (includes) a picture of the Yacht Club she's embellished to look like it's floating in the clouds.

There's a picture of her with a golf club, and then on a kneeboard getting pulled behind a boat. I've seen parts of these pictures, (but) I've never seen this embellished yacht club piece on the top of it … One of the things that I found from getting to be able to take a look at these scrapbooks was a lot
