A program that can be described as a “private boarding school/foster group home” believes all students can be successful with the proper guidance in all parts of their lives.

Life Prep Academy in Spring Lake Park is the brainchild of Pam Wolf Sladek, former state senator. The academy is a school and residential program designed to meet the needs of homeless and/or high risk teens (mostly ages 14-19).

When asked where the idea came to start a program like this, Wolf Sladek said “Apparently it has been on my brain for a long time, at least 20 years.”

Wolf Sladek taught at Pines School in Lino Lakes for eight years. It was there that she really started to see the need for an organization like Life Prep Academy.

“Some of the kids there who were ready to leave would sabotage themselves because home wasn’t a good place to go back to and some of them didn’t have any place to go once

Cryotherapy: Freezing away aches and pains

CIRCLE PINES—Does stepping into a minus 250-degree Fahrenheit chamber wearing nothing but some mittens and slippers sound appealing?

A new business is coming to town and wants to show the Quad area and surrounding communities the benefits that come from cryotherapy.

Fit Recovery plans to open its doors at 2 South Pine Dr. N in Circle Pines.

Owner Keith Moeller, a Blaine resident, opened the business in Ham Lake in March. He plans to close the Ham Lake location once the other location is up and running. He works as the operations manager at the Target Center Life Time. Last spring,

Life Time was looking into adding cryotherapy at one of its locations.

“We got to talking about the benefits and what it does and I was sold without even getting into one because I just love being able to help people, that’s the main reason why I’m doing this,” Moeller said. “I know a husband who was in tears one day because his wife, who has had chronic pain for 20 years, was able to get on a motorcycle without stopping. They were able to do the things they used to love doing.

He got his wife back.”

Here’s how cryotherapy works: You enter a cryo chamber wearing a robe, slippers and mittens. Once in the chamber, the robe comes off and liquid nitrogen cools the chamber to temperatures as low as minus 250 degrees. Each session is three

minutes long, but some customers choose to do more than one session.

“Your brain tells your body that you are in a hypothermic state, so your blood rushes to your organs to protect them because your organs need to remain at 98 degrees. Your veins constrict, your blood pools in that area to keep it warm and as soon as you step out of the unit and warm up naturally, the blood flows back to your extremities,” Moeller explained. “It is fi ltered blood, it is full of nutrients and it’s oxygenated, it triggers things in your brain and your body that flushes out inflammation. It is kind of euphoric.”

New Sky Zone offers outlets for kids to blow off energy

BLAINE – Children of all ages bounced on trampolines, fell into foam pits, climbed walls and dunked basketballs at the grand opening of the Blaine Sky Zone on June 14.

Julian Thomas, general manager of the Blaine Sky Zone, felt a weight come off his shoulders when he cut the ribbon signifying the opening of the new park.

“I’ve been working tirelessly and the ribbon cutting made it all worth it,” Thomas said.

The Blaine Sky Zone is the third one to be opened in Minnesota and has 200 facilities worldwide. Currently it is one of two locations in the state that are up and running, joining Oakdale. Sky Zone plans to open new facilities in Edina and in Maple Grove in July, as well.

The Blaine Sky Zone had a soft opening on March 10, but the grand opening signifi ed that all of the park was complete and no more construction needed to be done.

“Sky Zone Blaine was a big project,” Area Manager Jessica VonEnde said. “The team we had in place was no less than amazing in getting the project complete in such a short time frame.”

Thomas started working as the operation manager at the Oakdale location where VonEnde was the general manager. After VonEnde got promoted to area manager, Thomas became acting general manager.

When Blaine was starting up, Thomas was the choice to be general manager because of his experience.

“I want this to be a successful park,” Thomas said.

“I really want to be involved with this community and the surrounding communities because the other parks are on the other side of the metro.”

Sky Zone caters to after school programs, nonprofi t events, community outreach and kids with disabilities.

The Blaine facility opens at 11 a.m. Sunday through Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday in the summer time, but will have different hours during the school year.

Sky Zone has a lot to offer for young people looking to blow off energy. Trampolines are everywhere including up against the walls for young people bounce off of. Ultimate dodgeball is a popular game that is played, where all the participants bounce on trampolines while playing dodgeball. Basketball hoops are setup on trampolines making young people trying to do their best Michael Jordan impressions.

If someone does not like trampolines then they can play in the foam zone. In the form zone there are multiple attractions and trampolines where you land in a soft and safe pool of foam squares. At night the park lights up and the participants get the feeling of what Sky Zone is like glowed up. Food and beverages are available inside the facility as well.

“I am thrilled to be trusted to run this park,” Thomas said. “The trust Sky Zone has put in makes me feel valuable.”

Monitor stream health with SHEP Since 2006, Friends of the Mississippi River has coordinated the Stream Health Evaluation Program (SHEP) in the Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD). SHEP uses trained volunteers to evaluate the biological health of streams by sampling benthic macroinvertebrates, —small stream-dwelling bugs.

Each year, Friends of the Mississippi River needs 30 volunteers who work in three teams of 10. Preference is given to RCWD residents. No experience is necessary, as training will be provided. All are welcome, however, potential volunteers should seriously consider the tasks and hours involved before committing to the SHEP program.

The SHEP program includes training led by professional scientists from Minnesota Waters and MPCA. In September and early October, SHEP teams will monitor reaches of local streams and lakes. From late October to November, teams will identify collected macroinvertebrates in the lab, and finally, scientists review the SHEPers work and submit a final report to the RCWD, MPCA, and others regarding the data and what it indicates for local water quality.

Overall, SHEPers should expect to spend 35 hours on SHEP between training, stream collections, lab time and the analysis and results celebration.

Economic development specialist to aid The Anoka County Board of Commissioners approved the hiring of Jacquel Hajder as the county’s new economic development specialist at its June 12 meeting.

Hajder will work with the county, local cities, chambers of commerce, regional planning and economic development organizations and commercial real estate brokers to assess the economic development needs of the region and develop an effective strategy for engaging key stakeholders.

Hajder has been employed in the economic development field by three Minnesota cities and holds a bachelor’s degree in real estate and finance from the University of St. Thomas.

She’s won two Stofer/Stensby Real Estate awards, and she serves on multiple professional organizations that focus on real estate and economic development.

“I am excited for the challenge to position Anoka County to be competitive in attracting and expanding businesses in its communities,” Hajder said. “I am looking forward to making connections and working collaboratively with the cities on strategies while

building relationships with stakeholders and partners.”

Bruce Sayler, principal, Connexus Energy community and economic development, noted Hajder’s diverse background will be an asset in her new role. “I believe Mrs. Hajder’s vast background in working with hundreds of businesses over her career on relations, expansion and planning gives her unique insights to what businesses really need to locate, expand and grow within Anoka County,” he said.

ur eyes were hazed and our brains were boggled after a couple hours of paperwork and screenwork on our budget.

I dug out the Park Rx kit I had picked up at Ramsey County Library - White Bear Lake earlier that week and my husband and I were soon biking past the Minnesota River and Mississippi River on a glee-filled escape to the outdoors where everything seems much simpler.

We didn’t even have to fork out $7 to get into the park, something our budget back home appreciated. Our eyes appreciated the sites of summer and our brains soaked up the fresh air.

The Park Rx kit is a free community resource aiming to get families Story out and about.

About a decade ago when the phrase “nature-deficit disorder” rose to prominence, I found it rather trivial.

Then I worked at a daycare full of likely nature-deficit children, whose playground was in a back parking lot. Some of the children huddled around dandelions that grew in the cracks by the fence. The wood chips were the favorite toys of others.

I also caught up with the smartphone crowd and realized how easy it was to be stuck to a screen that can access anything, anywhere. I see youth everywhere staring at phones and pads. I wonder what it would be like to be a kid with a portable screen of endless stimulation and games.

I was a child in the days of Mr. Rogers, Pac-Man and Mario Brothers — and few other screen options. Instead, I caught frogs or joined a neighborhood game of capture-the-flag in the woods. I was blessed to grow up where the great outdoors were accessible and with parents who knew how to limit screen time, even in those simpler days.

Today, it is much more challenging to spend time outdoors. But it is essential to the well-being of both children and adults. Humans have a natural instinct to engage with nature, not to mention the importance of exercise.

“Nature-deficit disorder” is not meant to be a description of a medical condition but rather a phrase to describe the human need to experience the earth.

With multiplying screens and mounting materialism, it’s easy to enter the nature-deficit camp.

Enter Park Rx, a national movement to bring families outdoors.

The local kits are sponsored by a grant from the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation in partnership with Ramsey County Library, Minnesota State Parks and Trails and BearPower, a northeast metro initiative to keep families active.

The kits may expand to other Ramsey County libraries if the pilot program is successful.

They cannot be requested and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be checked out for seven days, so plan ahead early in the week.

They cannot be renewed.

Residents of Anoka, Washington and other metro counties can use their county library card through an agreement with the Metropolitan Library Service Agency.

Crossing a bridge to Pike Island, we happened upon a tree with a hollow trunk. Its fresh green leaves reached to the sky. We stepped inside and just stood there for a bit, taking in the hug from nature.

We jumped swiftly back onto our bikes. They were due in several minutes at the Nice Ride kiosk or we’d be charged another $6. Our budget back home would appreciate it.

Parks, trails and mountain biking

L

ike in the movie “The Sandlot,” when I was growing up, our gang of kids would often ride our Stingray bikes to a vacant lot and play baseball.

Besides the swing set at the elementary school, we really didn’t have many city parks that had play structures.

I always liked the monkey bars, but we don’t see monkey bars much anymore. I suppose it’s another thing someone Movers and thought was too for Shakers dangerous kids.

These days parks Jeff Reinert and trails are an important part of Lino Lakes and offer residents a better quality of life. Lino Lakes has 17 parks, and miles of trails, and these assets take a lot of effort and dollars to maintain.

Years ago, when a neighborhood developed, the developer would donate land, but the park wouldn’t be built until much later.

About 15 years ago, we fi xed this problem by requiring residential developers to contribute dollars for each housing unit. We now collect $2,500 per housing unit and these dollars are used to either build a new park or maintain one that is nearby, but these dollars are sometimes not enough.

To make sure our parks are maintained, we needed to allocate dollars annually. We are working on a plan I like to call, the “Parks and Trails Management Plan.” So far, this plan has support and we have allocated dollars to update several play structures this year.

Like our “Transportation Management Plan” implemented in 2004 to maintain our streets, the Parks and Trails Management Plan will allocate dollars annually to properly maintain, repair and replace our parks and trails as needed.

Helping the PTO: Play structures at our schools are not maintained by the school district. I didn’t know this fact until recently when we were approached by the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) from Rice Lake Elementary. The fi nancial responsibility to maintain, repair and replace these structures is transferred to the PTO. The price tag to replace the 25-year-old structure at Rice Lake is $160,000.

After meeting with our school district superintendent, he agreed to fi nd $40,000 and the city agreed to contribute $20,000 to get the project started.

At fi rst, I was against using city dollars for a play structure on school property, but I changed my mind when I learned that no dollars were typically available from the school district and we were really helping the PTO.

Athletic complex: Another effort underway is the development of our athletic complex talked about since the 1990s. The city owns 72 acres at Centerville Road and Birch Street where our new fi re station is located.

It was purchased to build an athletic complex but the cost for development is overwhelming. We will now chip away at this project a piece at a time starting with a plan recently completed to develop about 18 acres. We have a lot more work to do before the plan comes to fruition so stay tuned.

Mountain biking in Lino Lakes? I never thought people would come to Lino Lakes to mountain bike, but for those that like this sport, Anoka County is working with the Minnesota Off Road Cyclists (MORC) to further develop trails that exist in the woods of our Anoka County Regional Park located in the center of Lino Lakes. The trails that exist now have developed nicely over recent years but with the help of the county and MORC, these trails will become a destination ride for many.

A big part of living in Lino Lakes is enjoying the outdoors and open spaces. I will do my best to protect and maintain these assets and help “preserve our quality of life.”

New program connects isolated youth and seniors

S

eniors in our community are living longer than ever. By 2020, it is estimated that people age 65 and older will outnumber schoolage youth. At the same time, people of all ages, including seniors, are lonelier than ever before. According to a recent Cigna Health Insurance survey of over 20,000 U.S. adults, nearly half of survey respondents reported that they sometimes or always felt alone or left out.

While loneliness is on the rise across all age groups, seniors often have fewer resources to combat the problem. Physical frailty, lack of transportation and retirement from work can hamper seniors’ ability to get out of the house and interact with others. Our long, cold winters don’t help, either. And in our increasingly busy society, many younger generations ďŹ nd it difďŹ cult to regularly socialize with their elders.

In the midst of these two problems, lies an opportunity. Research conďŹ rms that one of the best ways to

combat loneliness is to get out and be with people. Research also shows that helping people through volunteer work reduces loneliness while also lowering levels of depression and anxiety in the volunteer.

Ironically, one generation experiencing high levels of loneliness is exceptionally qualiďŹ ed to help seniors combat theirs.

Time and Skype which allow people see and speak directly with others, can do much to alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness. We are fortunate that seniors who need our help are surrounded by youth and adults who have the skills to reduce it.

Because of this, Northeast Youth & Family Services is working on a new initiative to help match young people and adults in our community with seniors who need help accessing social media applications that will allow them to connect with loved ones and form new social groups. It will complement our existing program that matches volunteers of all ages and youth who need a job with seniors who need chore help. The in-person interactions between volunteers and seniors who participate in this new initiative will also work to reduce feelings of loneliness.

In addition to just being a good thing to do for seniors, a study conduted by AARP and Stanford University also indicates that a reduction in senior

loneliness has signiďŹ cant physical health beneďŹ ts that can result in fewer hospitalizations and lower overall medical costs While this project is still in the development stages, there are many volunteer opportunities out there right now for people who either feel lonely or want to help reduce it in others the old-fashioned way. Websites like volunteermatch.org will quickly connect you to people who need your help.

As our “silver tsunami� continues, so will advances in healthcare, housing and products designed to help seniors live longer. But there is no substitute for the human contact which helps all of us live better lives.

So take a moment to see where you can volunteer. It will be good for you and others.

PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEFS

The Centennial School Board recognized retirees and employment milestones at its employee recognition event in May. The District has 18 staff retirees, representing 498 years of service to the district.

The Board also announced the 2018 Employees of the Year.

Making a significant impact on the District are: Lynn Fernstrom, nutrition services director for 27 years with the district; Eric Nelson, lead teacher at Golden Lake Elementary for 25 years; And Jeff Thorson, math teacher for six years at the Pines School.

Lino Lakes residents Dan and Jessica Friedman, the inventors of Maze-O introduced on ABC’s “The Toy Box� in May 2017, have signed a deal with Plasmart. The company will take over the marketing, manufacturing and distribution for Maze-O with rights to distribute the toy worldwide and in return the Friedmans will receive royalties for each unit sold. Jessica said, “This is going to help grow Maze-O’s reach especially internationally. PlaSmart is a great company to take this on and we are excited to see the growth.�

Father’s Day weekend proves to be a deadly one

Father’s Day weekend had 11 traffic fatalities in eight fatal crashes on Minnesota roads Friday through Sunday. Five of the 11 people who died were riding motorcycles, another five were motorists and one was a pedestrian. The 11 fatalities on Minnesota roads were the most in one weekend since Oct. 14-16, 2016. Seven out of the 11 fatalities occurred in the 7-county metro. Alcohol is suspected in two crashes and drugs is suspected in two others. One of the victims was unbelted. Four of the crashes were speed-related. Nine of the victims were male and two were female.

Most of the victims were 34 to 81 years old with one age unknown.

Drive safely this summer

Memorial Day through Labor Day marks the 100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads. Preliminary numbers show the 100-day stretch last year accounted for 121 of 358 fatalities, making up 34 percent of all traffic deaths in 2017. Only four of 19 killed

in motorcycle accidents last year were wearing helmets. It is suggested that riders wear brightly-colored protective gear, including a helmet. Riders should be prepared for inattentive drivers and unexpected road situations and keep their

speed in check. Motorists should always look twice for motorcyclists before entering a roadway or changing lanes as their speed and distance can be difficult to judge. Motorists should also give riders enough room and drive at safe speeds.

Locals excited about national spotlight, economic impact

The best golfers in the world, coming into your town for a tournament — every year.

That’s the exciting news for the northwest suburbs that the Professional Golf Association (PGA) confirmed in a press conference June 18.

A regular tour event will be held at Tournament Players Club (TPC) in Blaine, starting in 2019, with a commitment of seven years. The event will be called the 3M Open.

“Minnesota has showcased how good golf is here,” Hollis Cavner told the Associated Press. “It’s time to go to the next level.”

Cavner is executive director of Pro Links Sports, which will manage the 3M Open. He also manages the 3M Championship, a thriving seniors tour event, which TPC has hosted since 2001.

Minnesota has also gotten good marks for hosting the 2009 PGA Championship and the 2016 Ryder Cup, both of them at Hazeltine in Chaska, helping bolster the case for a PGA Tour event.

“We are very excited about it. The buzz around the club has been great,” said Alan Cull, TPC general manager.

The club would not comment further, Cull added, until the dates of the 2019 tournament are announced.

Attending the press conference with high anticipation were members of the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce.

“We are thrilled that an official PGA Tour event is coming to the TPC-Twin Cities,” said President Lori Higgins. “It will be a wonderful way to showcase Blaine and Anoka County on a national stage. Also exciting is the anticipated economic

development impact, in the $50 to $70 million range, a huge benefit to our community.”

The business community will be ready, she added.

“Of course, thanks to the many years of the 3M championship, the USA Cup (soccer), and other large events, north metro businesses will definitely be ready and able to provide top-notch services to all the visitors.”

Blaine City Manager Clark Arneson was asked about the city’s role in this development.

“The city was in a support role.

Hollis and 3M did the work,” Arneson stated. “The city work begins now with logistics and security. The event will draw three times the Champions tour number of visitors/attendees to Blaine.”

Cavner told Eyewitness News that he started pitching Minnesota to the PGA eight years ago. When the PGA approached his group two years ago, it became a question of “when, not if.”

Cavner said he expects the 3M Open will attract most of the top players, while predicting that it will be one of the biggest events on the tour within a couple years.

Also at the press conference was Paul Keel, 3M's senior vice president of business development and marketing-sales, who pledged 3M’s continued commitment. Asked about tickets, Keel noted that while tickets were free to the 3M Championship, there will be charge for the 3M Open, with prices around the average PGA Tour cost.

Minnesota has lacked a regular PGA Tour stop since 1969. The St. Paul Open ran from 1930 to 1956, and was revived as the Minnesota Golf Classic from 1966 to 1969. Those were all played at Keller Golf Course in St. Paul, except the last two, which were at Hazeltine and at Braemar in Edina.

“The Twin Cities deserves this,” said Tom Lehman, Minnesota native and 1996 U.S. Open champion who, along with Hall of Famer Arnold

Palmer, designed the TPC course.

Interviewed by the Star-Tribune, Lehman added, “It’s a great golf market and a great sports market, period. It’s had a Ryder Cup and Final Fours and the Super Bowl. I can understand why 3M would want this, why everybody would want this.”

The fi nal 3M Championship at TPC will be held Aug. 3-5. Next year, this seniors event will move to Sioux Falls, SouthDakota, to make way for the 3M Open.

Two dates on the PGA summer schedule opened up when existing tournaments were moved to the fall portion of the schedule for next year.

Those were the the Houston Open, which has been in early June, and the Greenbrier Classic, over July 4. Most likely, the 3M Open will take one of those slots.

The PGA Tour will announce the dates of the first 3M Open along with the rest of its 2019 tour schedule on July 20.

McNamara hit .578, heads Cougar baseball honors group

Dalton McNamara, after an outstanding year at the plate, was one of three Centennial baseball players making all-conference after a 10-11 season.

The junior infielder batted .578, banging out 37 hits in 64 at-bats, with six doubles, two triples and one home run. He also led the team with a .663 onbase-percentage, 24 runs and nine steals, and was second with 16 RBI’s. Hitting over .500 is very rare, especially at the Class 4A level.

McNamara has already committed to a play baseball at the University of Missouri.

Also making all-Northwest Suburban conference (NWSC) were seniors Casey Lieser and Zach Streit. Getting honorable mention were senior Trei Driskell and junior Alex Phillips. Named to the allsection team was senior Dylan Grant.

Also hitting over .300 were Streit at .368, Grant .327 and Driskell .303.

Driskell led in RBIs with 19 and extra-base hits (three homers, three triples, six doubles) and was recognized as a three-year starter.

Top pitchers were Jake Prasch with a 3-2 record and 0.98 ERA; Phillips, 2-2 and 2.84; Lieser 2-2 and 2.85; and Trapp, 1-2 and 3.27. (ERA’s per seven innings.)

New early childhood playground accessible to all students

Despite downpours and sizzling temperatures, around 30 volunteers gathered outside of the Centennial Early Childhood Center at Rice Lake Elementary in Lino Lakes to build a new playground Saturday, June 16.

After early childhood moved into its new space last year, the idea for a new playground closer to the center started being tossed around.

“We were using an early childhood playground on the other (west) side of the building. The idea was that it would be so nice to have a new playground closer to this (east) side, so we don’t have to bring the little kids through the school,” explained Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Lead Teacher Sarah Holmboe.

“It would take up a lot of class time to have the kids and families walk all the way down to the other side for 15 minutes of recess or motor time.”

In the fall, staff started digging into the project by researching potential companies, play structures and grant opportunities.

“We wanted to see if there were any grants available because we knew this would be a big undertaking and we were

using community education funds, which is separate from general education (dollars),” Holmboe said. “We knew that we wanted to be very budget conscious and make sure that we were looking for ways we could get the structure built without completely using up all our funds.”

Staff ultimately chose St. Croix Recreation for the project. Although the company has prebuilt structures, they are still highly customizable and Holmboe said the staff felt the company really understood the needs of early childhood.

“Working with kids birth to age 5, but also special needs students, we wanted to make sure that it was very accessible for all ages, any sort of needs or disabilities. We wanted to really be engaging kids with a lot of motor experiences and kinds of play,” she said.

The main structure is equipped with a transfer station, allowing kids in wheel chairs or with physical disabilities easy access. The structure is also surrounded by unique pieces such as triangular shaped arches, low-to-the-ground monkey bars, rock climbing tunnel and a double slide with a ladder.

Although the project cost around $35,000, a lot of that was covered by donations from the Parent Teacher Association, staff members and families.

The Parent Advisory Council donated a playhouse; Rochelle Miller and Taylor Nelson Miller donated a teeter-totter in honor of Laurie Nelson, a staff member who lost her battle with cancer last year; and the Davies family donated a fire truck in memory of their son Ethan Michael Davies who died five years ago.

“Everyone has been pitching in individual pieces to add to that main structure all with the idea it’s inclusive

and is really going to allow kids of all abilities and ages to enjoy and have easy access to play,” Holmboe said.

In addition to donations, volunteers also helped bring the cost down by dedicating manpower during the playground build. From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., volunteers from the Chain of Lakes Rotary, Boy Scouts, YMCA Togetherhood program, district administrators and ECFE staff and parents worked diligently to install the equipment despite the rain and hot temperatures.

Thrivent Financial also awarded ECFE a grant to pay for supplies, food and water to keep the volunteers comfortable during the build.

“We are so excited to be able to offer a new playground for our families.

We really wanted to be able to offer a playground because we know that motor development and outdoor play is so important for child development,” Holmboe explained. “Having some new pieces that are really tailored for that age group means that we can truly serve birth to age 5 families.”

All that’s left is the installation of some rubberized turf and mulch.

they got out,” she explained. “That, combined with the awareness of youth homelessness and how big of an issue it is, inspired me.”

Wolf Sladek served as a Minnesota senator for one term and when she was not re-elected in 2012, she started to make the school a reality. In the fall of 2013, the organization officially became a nonprofit. In August 2014, Life Prep Academy rented a building in Spring Lake Park and the academy took in its fi rst student in October 2014.

Before the academy had dorms to house teens in need of a place to stay, the youth lived in Wolf Sladek’s home.

Now the facility can take in up to 16 teens at one time, with the addition of 10 other teens who have other accommodations, but need access to schooling.

“Think of us as a private boarding school/foster group home. We are unique. Nothing like us exists. We have been a circle peg in a square hole every step of the way,” she said.

The purpose (of Life Prep Academy) is to give an opportunity to kids in situations that want the education and would take advantage of it. We are not going to take any kids kicking and screaming. It is for the kids who don’t have those opportunities, we will fi ll that roll, give them a place to live, take care of all their basic needs.”

Wolf Sladek added, “When they are worried about where they are going to sleep at night it takes away form their focus being on school and their future. We take away those fears by providing a home and all their basic needs and then they can focus on what their goals are for adult life. It is not a shelter, it is their home.”

The year-round school is very different from a traditional school.

Rather than doing specific subjects every day at the same time, it is more about focusing on certain tasks that have to be accomplished that day. Flexibility is worked in to the schedule, which allows the teens to hold jobs.

A big focus is on independent living. “They learn a whole bunch of things that are ideally taught in the family,” Wolf Sladek said. In addition to cooking, cleaning, sewing, car care, childcare and fi rst aid, students also receive help with job training, fi nances, furnishing their fi rst home and help with the transition from school to whatever happens after (job/ military/education).

Life Prep Academy in Spring Lake Park teaches youth about indepenent living with skills such as cooking, cleaning, sewing, car care, first aid etc.

While at Life Prep Academy, students are required to obtain a job and do community service. 10 percent of their salary can be spent on whatever they choose, 10 percent must be used to “pay it forward,” 20 percent goes to the school and 60 percent goes into a savings account that teens can access for independent living costs.

The academy predominately serves teens in Anoka County, however Wolf Sladek said they are not limited to Anoka County, adding they have served youth from Lino Lakes, Blaine, Spring Lake Park, East Bethel, Coon Rapids, Mounds View, Columbia Heights and Champlin.

The nonprofit is run by all volunteer staff and dependent on monetary donations and donations of items.

One day, Wolf Sladek hopes she can pay staff. “At this point, we don’t need much stuff, we need the consumable stuff like paper towels, tissues, paper towels, shampoo,” she said. “We need money to pay for the rent, the food, the lights, the heat...”

• Discussed the issue of limited access for emergency vehicles getting in and out of the trailer park during construction. Mayor Mark Kurth and City Administrator Bill Petracek contacted emergency services and determined the solution is to enter the park slowly.
