Lino Lakes resident recognized with lifesaving award

LINO LAKES — A resident was recognized during a Ramsey County Sheriff's promotion/award ceremony for saving a woman's life.

“This is a special day (as is) any time that we get the chance

to celebrate promotions and, in this case, to recognize a civilian, a nonemployee of our Sheriff's Office, who has done some great work on behalf of public safety,” said Sheriff Jack Serier to open the ceremony, held June 12.

John Latcham, who has lived in Lino Lakes for eight years with his

family, works at 3 Diamond Corporation in Shoreview. On Feb. 10 Ramsey County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a car fire off of County Road E in Shoreview. That morning, Latcham happened to be outside when he noticed smoke

LEXINGTON—The Lovell building and surrounding 4.39 acres of land is in preliminary agreement to be sold. The city has approved a Letter of Intent with Dominium Acquisition, LLC, which intends to build a 184-unit senior living apartment complex.

The project is anticipated to have one story of below grade parking and four stories of above ground apartments and common areas.

The purchase price of the land is $200,000 with an additional $80,000 for park dedication fees.

Dominium Acquisition, located in Plymouth, hopes to close on the property by Oct. 31, 2018.

Demolition of the former school will begin immediately after closing.

Centennial Schools’ website states the Lovell building served as a school beginning in 1949 as a three-room building, which was added onto over the years. An additional eight rooms were added in 1952 and in 1955, another thirteen. A kitchen, cafetorium and library were built in 1960.

Golden Lake Elementary was constructed in 1972, joining Centerville and Centennial Elementaries already in the district. Lovell Elementary was closed in1982 due to the costs of needed repairs and declining enrollment.

CIRCLE PINES — The hailstorm that dropped out of the morning sky Sunday, June 11, delivered a punch — or did little damage, depending what square mile of the area you live in.

Residents of Blaine experienced considerably more storm damage than their neighbors just to the south in Lexington, where city officials reported no calls of damage. Blaine’s website, www.blainemn.gov, has a storm damage update section giving residents instructions and timelines for downed trees, leaves and brush cleanup.

Blaine Public Services Manager Bob Therres reported a large citywide coordinated cleanup effort.

“Our public works crews are out working and we’re continuing to clean up. It will be a couple days, and

the thunderstorm June 14 to find his tree in the street. He has lived on Baldwin Drive in Circle Pines for about 20 years.

Strawberries were selling at the opening week of the Lexington Farmers Market Wednesday, June 14. The annual market is held in the parking lot of the Lovell Building, 4175 Lovell Road. Julie Vanderbloomer, president of the Lexington Fire & Rescue Auxiliary, and firefighter Tom Flermoen were on hand to assist vendors and customers. Vendors are welcome at the farmers market for the season or from week to week.

Onions were doing well with the weather. This vendor said the rhubarb she cut just that morning was the last she would have. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, rhubarb does best when temperatures remain below 75 degrees F.

Jerry Smith, owner of Cambridge Roasting Company, offers a sample of his Guatemalan dark roast to Margaret Heiskary. Farmers Market Manager Rachel Anderson said Smith is a well-loved vendor. “People come specifically to see him and his coffee. When he roasts, it smells delicious,” she said.

“I saw some smoke and I didn't think anything of it. I thought they must be having a morning barbecue, which I thought didn't make sense. I jogged out into the street, jumped up into the air and I could make out the outline of the frame of a car,” Latcham recalled. “I turned to go get my fire extinguisher but then I thought if there was someone in there, I might not have time to get it. I did a full-on sprint across the road, down the railroad tracks, up the ravine and as soon as I got to the top I could see a woman in there.”

As Latcham was running toward the car, he was shouting at the woman to get out. “She was conscious, but she was not thinking clearly; she was irrational, disoriented and I thought maybe she bumped her head,” he said.

Latcham was able to grab the woman by the wrists and drag her out of the car and up an embankment to safety.

After the incident, deputies noticed that the heat from the fire had been so intense at the time Latcham pulled the woman out that her shoes had already started to melt.

someone is in need. Your actions have proven you to be a person of tremendous character,” Serier said. “It is a selfless act, going up to a car that is burning, which if you've ever been in that situation, those are tenuous moments and you think about your own safety … Thank you so much for your willingness to do that and your service to other people.”

When asked why Latcham wanted to spring to action himself rather than wait for deputies to arrive on scene, he said simply, “I had to assume there was life in there. My biggest fear was that there was a kid or pet in the car. I couldn't confirm it visually,” he said. “I thought about my kids.”

Although Latcham said it is nice to be recognized for his actions that day, he

is just happy the woman is okay. Many people have told him he was that woman's “guardian angel” that day.

Golfers at Chomonix enjoying new greens

Green 6 reopened June 2 at Chomonix Golf Course in Lino Lakes after it was closed for nearly a year due to renovations. The green expanded from 5,490 square feet to 5,829 square feet.

LINO LAKES — A welcome sight greeted golfers of the Chomonix Golf Course Friday, June 2 as greens 6 and 17 reopened after nearly a year of being closed to play.

The two holes underwent renovations to help fi x issues with drainage and playability.

“We literally tore them up completely,” said Chris Bettinger, golf operations supervisor.

Renovations began July 18, 2016, while two tempo-

rary holes kept the course at a full 18 holes.

“It's been fantastic," Bettinger said. "All the golfers that have been out there so far have come back in with nothing but praise.”

With the help of architect Kevin Norby, a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA), the project focused on bringing the greens up to United States Golf Association (USGA) standards. Norby has been involved in the design and construction of more than 100 golf-related projects throughout the U.S, Canada and the Caribbean.

According to a statement by Anoka County

Parks & Community Services, the renovations sought to improve several aspects of both holes.

Enhancements to those greens included increased green size, improved drainage, a new sand bunker and tree removal for cleaner tee shots. Hole 6’s green expanded from 5,490 square feet to 5,930 square feet; hole 17 expanded from 3,830 square feet to 5,080 square feet.

Bettinger has been pleased with the feedback they've received from the regulars.

"They love it. This has been talked about for some years now," he said. "We have one of the biggest men's clubs in the state ... and they've stuck with us."

The $150,000 project fi nished on par with the allotted budget and, according to Bettinger, the course has been booked solid since the holes were reopened to golfers.

Get the lead out

F YOU ARE living in an older home that likely has lead pipes, for your health and safety it might be a good idea to run the water for 30 seconds to two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.

This information comes from the Portland, Oregon Water Bureau. They suggest using cold water for cooking and baby formula. Avoid the hot water tap for cooking and drinking.

AT THIS MOMENT the Dow is over 20,000. If there is a 100 point drop, it would only be a half a percent drop. Back in the seventies when the Dow was 861, a 100 point drop equaled an 11.6 percent drop. I don’t know if that makes you feel better or not. One has to take the total in perspective for a percentage factor.

Advice on door-to-door salespeople

S

ummer is almost here, and solicitors offering asphalt services, magazine subscriptions and security alarm systems – among other products and services – are likely already making the rounds and may well ďŹ nd their way to your doorstep. Better Business BureauÂŽ of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) urges people to be on the lookout for problematic sales pitches and to have a plan in place when it comes to dealing with door-to-door solicitors.

Though many door-to-door salespeople operate ethically and represent reputable companies, there are others who are looking only to make a sale and move on as quickly as possible – leaving customers wondering if they’ll receive the product or service they’ve paid for or if they’ve just been had. BBB offers the following advice on how to handle door-to-door salespeople: Inquire about licensing. Many cities now require door-to-door salespeople to obtain a peddler or solicitor license. Ask the salesperson if they’ve checked in with the city and obtained proper licensing. If you’re unsure if your city requires such a permit, call

your city ofďŹ ces.

Ask for identiďŹ cation. A reputable seller will provide you with all the information you request, including a photo ID and a business card.

Verify the individMovers and ual and the company. Tell the salesperson you will check it out and get back to him or her. Then research the company yourself and contact them directly to verify the salesperson is an employee. Read the contract closely. Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions before signing on the dotted line, and be sure you have a physical address and valid contact information for the company.

Don’t be pressured. Watch out for high-pressure sales tactics and be

aware that anything you sign could construe a contract.

Do the math. Paying $30 to $40 per month for magazine subscriptions may not sound like much, but if the contract runs for two years – or longer – charges can add up fast. Make sure you have an idea of what the average subscription costs for any magazine that interests you. Most magazines have detachable postcards inside with some of the lowest rates available.

Know your rights. The Federal Trade Commission’s Three-Day Cooling-Off Rule gives the customer three days to cancel purchases over $25 that are made in their home or at a location that is not the seller’s permanent place of business. Along with a receipt, salespeople should also include a completed cancellation form that customers can send to the company to cancel the agreement. By law, the company must give customers a refund within 10 days of receiving the cancellation notice.

Stand strong. Be careful about allowing strangers into your home. If you do allow a salesperson inside your home and decide during the presentation that you are not interested in

making a purchase, simply ask them to leave. If the salesperson refuses to leave, tell them you will call the police – and follow through if they don’t leave immediately.

Steer clear of asphalt ďŹ rms that say they have leftover asphalt from another job. A classic tactic of less-than-reputable asphalt ďŹ rms is to tell consumers they have extra asphalt leftover from another job and will perform the work for minimal cost. However, professional asphalt contractors know, with great accuracy, how much paving material is needed to complete a project. They rarely have leftover material. It’s also always a good idea to get multiple estimates before choosing any contractor.

Lee Carlson Center is already a provider of school-based mental health across five school districts and manages a drop-in center

The highlight of the Centennial sports school year of 2016-17 is easy to pinpoint.

That would be the girls soccer team’s state championship last November, the Cougar squad coached by Ginger Flohaug that was seeded only fifth, despite being the lone unbeaten team left, but proved itself with three 2-1 wins at state over Lakeville North, Andover and Rosemount.

Tessa Trettel delivered both goals in the state finals, along with the overtime game-winner in the section finals to beat Maple Grove 3-2, three huge goals among her nine for the season.

Leaders of the 18-0-3 team included all-tournament picks Trettel, Meghan Wilson, Olivia Lovick and goalie Anna Sveiven, along with Division I signees

Ashley Ebeling (the scoring leader) and Ellie Eskierka.

“It’s amazing that the hard work we put in practice actually paid off on the field,” Trettel said after the state finals.

Other notable achievements by Centennial for the just-concluded school year include: • Twenty Cougars signed with Division I or II college teams, the most ever, including five in football, three in basketball and two each in soccer, swimming, and wrestling.

• Cougar girls swimming under coach Chip Fletcher won conference and section championships and took home two medals at the state meet with Abigail Schwartz placing fifth in the backstroke and a relay team placing eighth.

• Three Cougar wrestlers got on the podium at state as Gopher recruit Jakob

Bergeland took second at 138, Wisconsin recruit Tyler Shilson was fourth at 145 and Justin Mohlin was sixth at 195.

• Another Cougar wrestler, sophomore Emily Shilson, was the first girl to qualify for state in Class 3A and just the second overall, and earned a spot on Team USA for a world meet in Europe.

• Boys hockey under Ritch Menne went 21-5-1 and just missed state, losing to Maple Grove 4-3 in the section finals, led by junior Lucas McGregor (29 goals, 26 assists).

• Girls hockey had two of the top scorers in the metro area in juniors Gabby Hughes (32 goals, 40 assists) and Anneke Linser (23-41), both missing four games to play with Team USA in Europe.

stuff were lying on their sides. Other than that, we really didn’t have a lot of damage, nothing like the stories I’ve been hearing throughout the neighborhood.”

Gaylene Olson, controller for Malmborg’s Garden Center in Rogers, reported their store at 2456 125th Avenue NE in Blaine had significant damage.

“I have an insurance adjuster coming out to look at Blaine. I imagine a lot of people in that area are being visited by their insurance agents and adjusters at this point,” she said. Malmborg’s added a “hail sale” section to its website.

U.S. Postal Service driver Patrick Smith lives on Jefferson Street in Blaine. “I have two bay windows broken and all my plants are devastated,” he said.

Lino Lakes business owners Mary Joyer and Kathy Rivard have been busy. Waldoch Farm and Garden Center, 8174 Lake Drive in Lino Lakes, took the brunt of the hailstorm in full force. “We got it,” said Rivard.

“We closed on Sunday, we’ve never closed, ever, because of a storm. We spent the whole day cleaning up,” Rivard said.

Joyer noted the additional high school and college employees were a big help. “This is the week our high school hires come back to work in the fields. Some of our sales guys came out and helped us clean up.

Anything that was under cover is still OK, so we still have product. We did throw a lot of stuff away (out in the fields),” Joyer said.

The family wants everyone to know they are still open and have items for sale. “We are replanting tomatoes and peppers, we were able to get more. It’s early enough in our season for the produce. We can replant and still have harvest. We’ll have watermelon, kumquat, pumpkins, sweet corn, green beans, tomatoes and peppers,” Joyer added. “The lilies are toast.”

Many hands (and no customers) make light work.

“The next day (Monday) people thought we weren’t hit by the storm because our staff did such a good job of cleaning. They thought we were missed. We just said, ‘No, look up,' and they see the damage,” Joyer said.

Time and insurance heals most all wounds. “All of our poly greenhouse roofs have holes in them, and they’ll be replaced,” Joyer said. “We’re open, we have product to sell.”

Centennial taps three as exemplary employees for 2017

Centennial Schools selected three staff members as “Employee of the Year” for the 2016-17 school year and honored each of them in a ceremony May 24.

“The employees of the year represent the incredible attributes of so many quality staff members at Centennial,” said Superintendent Brian Dietz.

“Their contributions to the school and our five communities are celebrated through this award.”

Michele McClellan has been in the district for 18 years, and began her career in Rochester, Minnesota. Over the years, she has held many different titles, including reading specialist, third-grade teacher, sixth-grade math teacher and gifted and talented teacher.

She currently works as a fourth-grade teacher at Centerville Elementary.

“It’s fun to be with the kids,” she said.

“It’s fun to pull things out of them that

they weren’t comfortable with trying before. Developmentally, each of my jobs has been spectacular.”

Tina Pierson has been the secretary at Centennial High School going on five years, and she has been employed by the district for eight. Before coming to Centennial, she worked for Thomson Reuters Corporation in its technology department, was a computer lab paraprofessional at Golden Lake Elementary and spent a few years as a stay-at-home mom to her three sons.

“Every day is different, and I really enjoy making connections with the students,” she said. “I am very lucky to work with such great people, both coworkers and students. It makes going to work each day fun and memorable!”

Jeanne Scarr has spent 24 years as the Centennial Middle School physical education teacher, working specifically with developmentally adapted children.

Parkview and the city disagree on improvement standards, the matter is currently in state courts. Glaser requested time at the next council meeting for more discussion on the matter.

• Petracek stated the security camera purchased from Pro-Tec Designs has been installed near Memorial Park.

• Kurth stated the city has agreed to an offer on redevel-

opment of the Lovell building, and is signing a Letter of Intent. See this week’s front page story for more information.

• Held a workshop regarding a proposal from US/Solar Sunscription. US/Solar contracts with Xcel Energy to produce and sell solar energy at a reduced rate to consumers. Representative Peter Schmitt met with Petracek and Galiov aforehand, his presentation contained current data from the city.

Schmitt was invited to return in July for further presentation, giving Glaser time to investigate the contracts

and speak with other municipals contracted with US/ Solar.

The next city council meeting will be at 7p.m. Thursday, July 6 at City Hall.

Circle Pines residents address concerns with wildlife feeding ordinance

CIRCLE PINES — Residents were present at the June 13 City Council Meeting to express their concerns and get their questions answered regarding a proposed ordinance prohibiting the feeding of wildlife.

The topic was initially brought up to the council by resident Jeff Klein, who expressed frustration with the damage his gardens undergo largely, he said, because one of his neighbors puts out piles of food for deer. He was also concerned for the well-being of the deer.

“It is a problem,” said City Administrator Patrick Antonen. “The deer population is very high in this area right now. The encouraging of feeding animals is discouraged pretty much by all the regulatory bodies involved.”

The council approved the first reading of the ordinance at its May 23 meeting. The ordinance is modeled after Blaine's ordinance and defines feeding as “grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, salt licks or any other food that could attract wild animals.” The ordinance does not apply to the feeding of birds in bird feeders or similar structures; however, bird feeders must be at a “sufficient” height or designed to prevent access by other wild animals. Living food sources such as trees and other live vegetation is not considered food for wild animals.

Circle Pines previously had a feeding ordinance in place prohibiting the feeding of waterfowl.

“I saw a fawn in the neighbor's yard … it was pretty amazing, but the destruction to my garden has just been enormous,” said Councilman Richard Runbeck. “It is very expensive for me, because I have some really great plants. They come in and they eat the best and the most expensive. Since we don't allow hunting (and) we are not allowed to shoot, let's not induce a nuisance right to our own front door.”

A resident asked Runbeck if he has done anything to try to prevent the deer from eating his garden. Runbeck explained he had tried multiple tactics, none of which had been successful.

Councilwoman Deb O'Brien said, “We live in an area where we are going to see deer. So I think there is a certain amount of expectation that you are going to see deer and you are going to have some plants chewed on, but it is the feeding that is going to bring more of them in, that's the problem.”

O'Brien added her son really likes deer and for many years they were putting out salt licks and corn, but they stopped a few years ago after finding out it was bad for the deer population.

When it comes to nature, “Circle Pines is awesome,” O'Brien noted. “When you see a bunch of deer it is really cool, but when the amount of deer gets to be too much and when people are very specifically feeding them it's a problem,” she said. “We have read a lot of research that says that is not healthy for the deer, so those of us who really do care about the nature and value seeing them here we want that to continue. We want to make sure the feeding stops.”

Another resident, who has lived in Circle Pines for 51 years, has never considered the city to have a deer problem. “I don't remember ever having deer in the yard. I have a chain link fence, so I don't know if that keeps them out, but it seems like you are fighting a problem which for me in the old section of town, doesn't exist,” he said.

Another resident, who lives a block away from the previous resident, said she sees deer, but she loves seeing them. “I have lived here for 48 years now and I love seeing them. They are beautiful and I enjoy every last minute of watching them,” she said. She added last year some deer ate the buds off of her lilies, but she wasn't worried about it because the lilies eventually sprout new buds.

“I am not having any problem. I enjoy the wildlife and I'd hate to not be able to enjoy it because of somebody else's

little flower bed,” she said.

Mayor Dave Bartholomay explained that many years ago the city had the same problem with residents feeding geese. "They were all over the park. Their poop has salmonella in it and you'd have kids in the park and on the playground … You are going to always have some geese, but you don't want too many. Same thing with the deer.”

Runbeck said he has always had two or three deer in his yard, but this spring he saw a herd of seven come through. Councilman Matt Percy, who has a game camera set up in his yard, said he has also seen a large herd.

“I've seen herds as big as 10-12 come through all at once.

For a small community like this, that is a lot,” Percy explained. “We have a lot of wild areas here and we would just like them to stay in the wild areas a little bit more than they are right now. We are always going to see deer in our neighborhoods, but it is getting to the point now where it is a nuisance.”

Another resident shared her and her family enjoys feeding the squirrels and she was worried they would have to stop. “We have fed squirrels for years. One of the things we enjoy more than anything else is feeding them and watching them … We would like to keep them around,” she said.

Council members explained since the resident was not feeding squirrels deliberately with other sources of food, but rather feeding the birds on bird feeders with the squirrels getting in on the action, her actions would not violate the ordinance.

The council approved the second reading of the ordinance and ordered a summary of it to be published. Under Minnesota statute, the ordinance will take effect 30 days after publication.

POLICE REPORTS The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An incident of criminal sexual conduct was reported in Circle Pines June 8. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers took a report in the 0 block of Camelo Lane in Circle Pines June 8 of a fraudulent check that was received in the mail.

• Officers responded to a civil dispute in the 7000 block of 21st Avenue in Centerville June 9. Officers stood by while the property owner evicted the tenant and removed property from the building.

• Officers were dispatched to a complaint of children carrying weapons in the 900 block of North Service Drive in Lexington June 10. A weapon was secured and the juveniles were released to their parents.

• Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Oak Lane in Lexington June 10 regarding a tree that fell on a vehicle.

No one was injured.

• Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Restwood Road in Lexington June 10 for a past action assault.

Officers located the assailant and found the incident was instigated by both parties. One of the suspects was transported to the hospital by ambulance for minor injuries.

• Officers took a report of a theft of personal and household items overnight from a vehicle parked in the 8800 block of Pascal Avenue in Lexington June 12.

• Officers responded to a phone call report of a motor vehicle theft in the 8900 block of Pascal Avenue June 12. The caller advised an unknown suspect entered the vehicle and went through it without taking anything.

The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department reported the following incidents: • An officer conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of Main Street June 7 for several lane violations. An adult male was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

• A 51-year-old female was intoxicated and walking along the 800 block of I-35W south June 7. The female was released to a sober friend.

• Officers responded to the 300 block of Elm Street June 7 for a juvenile status offense. A juvenile male was charged for possession of an electronic delivery device, or e-cigarette.

• A resident in the 7300 block of Meadow Court reported her identity was fraudulently used June 7. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers were called to the 7500 block of Lake Drive June

7 for a road rage gun pointing incident that occurred on I-35W in the area of 95th Avenue. Officers assisted the State Patrol, who handled the incident.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 200 block of Ash Street June 8. The driver was subsequently cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.

• Officers investigated an assault that occurred in the 7400 block of Village Drive June 8. A juvenile male was arrested and booked at the juvenile facility.

• Officers responded to the 600 block of Apollo Drive June 8 on a suspicious activity report. Officers learned that some time overnight, an unknown person placed stickers on a business. The stickers were removed and no damage was caused. The incident is under investigation.

• An officer stopped a vehicle whose license plates did not match the description of the licensed vehicle on file at the intersection of West Shadow Lake Drive and Birch Street June 8. The 19-year-old male driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant. He was also cited for displaying plates not issued to a motor vehicle and no vehicle insurance.

• An officer stopped a vehicle at Lake Drive and Naples Street June 8 for a seat belt violation and an invalid driver's license. The 28-year-old female driver was arrested for gross misdemeanor driving after cancellation inimical to public safety and a seat belt violation. The female was transported and booked into the Anoka County Jail.

• Officers responded to a home in the 400 block of Ash Street June 8 on a report of an assault. A 40-year-old male was arrested and booked into jail for assault and burglary.

• Officers were dispatched to the 7700 block of 20th Avenue June 9 for a personal injury crash. An adult male was subsequently arrested for alcohol-related offenses and booked into jail.

• Officers responded to the 800 block of Lois Lane on a report of an intoxicated male who was being disorderly June 9. Officers spoke with the parties involved and found the male had not been disorderly but was intoxicated. The male did not appear to be a danger to himself or others and he did not want to be transported to a hospital or detox facility. No crime had occurred and no emergency existed. The male stayed at the location and had a person on site to care for him if needed.

• An officer responded to a report of theft and damage to property in the 400 block of Apollo Drive June 9. An

unknown person(s) damaged a vehicle and stole the car stereo.

• Officers responded to a possible personal injury accident in the 6100 block of Centerville Road June 9. Officers determined the driver wasn't injured. However, the 50-year-old male driver was subsequently arrested for DWI. The male was booked into the Anoka County Jail for third-degree DWI refusal, fourth-degree DWI, open bottle and driving after suspension.

• An officer took a report of identity theft from a victim who lives in the 1500 block of Oakview Court June 9. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 1300 block of I-35W June 11. The adult female driver was cited for underage drinking and driving and an adult male passenger was cited for underage consumption of alcohol.

The occupants were picked up at the scene by a family member.

• Officers responded to the 900 block of Oak Lane June 11 on a report of a tree branch on a power line. Officers blocked the roadway with the fire division until the power company arrived on scene.

• An officer was dispatched to a burglary in the 70 block of Robinson Drive June 12. Officers responded to the address and processed the scene for evidence. The address was a new home under construction. The investigation is ongoing.

• Officers received a report of damage to property that occurred in the 6900 block of Sunrise Drive. Officers arrived and documented the graffiti on city-owned park property. The public works department was notified for cleanup.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop in the 7600 block of Lake Drive because the driver had a warrant for his arrest June 12. The 27-year-old male was taken into custody and booked at the Anoka County Jail.

• An officer stopped a vehicle in the 700 block of Main Street for failing to dim high beams and speeding June 12. The driver was subsequently cited for underage drinking and driving and the two passengers were cited for underage consumption.

Subd. 12 Intentional Feeding of Wild Animals. No person shall feed or allow the feeding of wild or feral animals or of small mammals within the city. Feeding shall mean the provision of any grain, fruit, vegetables, nuts, salt licks, or any other food that could attract wild animals. Living food sources such as trees and other live vegetation shall not be considered food for wild animals. Bird feed may be placed in bird feeding devices and structures solely for the purpose of attracting and feeding wild birds. Bird feeding devices and structures should be placed at a sufficient height or designed to prevent access by wild animals. No person shall place food for waterfowl on public or private property anywhere within the City of Circle Pines. This provision shall not apply to employees or agents of the city, county, state, and the federal government or veterinarians who are acting in the course of their official duties or have wild animals in their custody or under their management.

SECTION 2. This ordinance shall be effective upon passage and official or summary publication.

2. The School Board concludes that Laurie Erickson has not obtained continuing contract rights while working at the School District and continues to be a probationary teacher subject to Minnesota Statutes Section 122A.40, subdivision 5.

3. Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes Section 122A.40, subdivision 5, the probationary teaching contract of Ms. Erickson is hereby non-renewed, and her employment with Independent School District 12, Centennial, Minnesota, is terminated effective at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

4. The School Board has reviewed and approves the written notice informing Ms. Erickson of the non-renewal of her probationary contract, as well as the documents attached thereto. — When two sisters (Mandy Moore and Clair Holt) foolishly accept an invitation by two men (Yani Gellman and Santiago Segura) they just met the night before to go scuba diving and to see great white sharks up close during their vacation to Mexico in this disappointing, love-or-skip-it, unevenly paced, tepid, low-budget, 89-minute thriller with a lackluster soundtrack and reminiscent of the superior film “The Shallows,” the adventure quickly goes from bad to worse after they board a rust-bucket boat owned by a well-meaning captain (Matthew Modine) and then get into a questionable, supposedly protective cage.

After a three-week dry spell, shower activity picked up a bit, with 1.08 inches falling between June 11-18. The little over an inch is what we would expect this time of year and hope to get to keep lawns green. Temperatures took a break this past week as did humidity levels, as cooler and drier Canadian air moved in.

The weekend proved to be nice with Sunday barely making it into the 70`s. Congratulations to those runners who ran Grandma`s Marathon this past weekend, including running friend Chris Lahren who ran a PB of 3:22!
