Legion honors public safety personnel BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — The city of Lino Lakes swept the statewide 2017 American Legion, Department of Minnesota Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer and Firefighter of the Year. “It is unheard of for a city to sweep the Police Officer and Firefighter of the Year award from the American Legion, and these two did. As far as I know ... that has never happened before,” said Cmdr. Paul Lesch. “It
shows how great our department of public safety is.” Police Officer of the Year Sgt. Curt Boehme and Firefighter of the Year Brian Finke were both recognized at the June 11 City Council meeting. Each year Post 566 asks Public Safety Director John Swenson and Centennial Lakes Police Chief James Coan to nominate an individual they think is worthy of the recognition. The picks from each department are then honored at a city council/police governing board meeting and submitted to a pool of
candidates for the Department of Minnesota awards. American Legion Department of Minnesota Communications Director Al Zdon confirmed this is the first time a city has achieved both awards at the state level, noting the Firefighter of the Year award was established a few years ago.

LINO LAKES — Visitors to American Legion Post 566 have likely noticed a new face in the kitchen along with new food options. Shoreview resident Ronnie Keyes became the new chef in March. Tom Meister, of the closed Meisters Bar and Grill (now known as Shore 96) in Shoreview, joined the Legion team in January to get the Legion’s food service up and running after Joe Moore, of Joe's Showcase BBQ, parted ways with the Legion. After establishing a complete lunch menu, Meister's job was complete. General Manager Diana Cox began her search and stumbled upon Keyes, whom she felt would be a great fit. “I spent hours and days interviewing different candidates ... Replacing Tom was going to be a tough job, as he was an integral part of opening the restaurant. I was worried. Very worried. And along came Ronnie,” she said. Keyes is originally from Biloxi, Mississippi. His passion for food stems back to his childhood when his very large family had delicious food at family reunions. He always thought food was “intriguing,” but never thought about a career in the industry until an injury stopped him from playing college basketball. He started his career working as a chef on a cruise ship for three years. “It was a fun job. I was barely 21 and just trying to get into the industry, but I learned a lot,” he said. He then moved to Minnesota, where he attended St. Paul College and worked at the Radisson Hotel in St. Paul for seven years. He then moved back home to take care of
Demolition of the Pizza Hut in Circle Pines began Tuesday, June 12. Casey’s General Store is expected to open on the site this fall. See more photos on page 11.
