LINO LAKES — Minnesota Twins fans are often greeted by T.C. Bear while attending home games, but now they may run into another happy face — and a wet nose.

Springer Spaniel Judy, of Lino Lakes, is 5-1/2 years old and a whopping 32 pounds. Judy is not at Target Field because she likes baseball, but she's there instead to sniff for trouble.

“She is there to keep them safe.

I think it makes people feel a lot better, especially when you see what's on TV,” said handler Mike Litman, a longtime resident of Lino

Lakes. “The Twins go the extra mile, not only in security, but in everything they do.”

Target Field Security Manager Jeff Reardon said, “At MLB and the Minnesota Twins we really try to be one step ahead of the game with being proactive with security. It is a really solid venue.

In light of Boston and Manchester, people really appreciate it (having Judy present) and they have really embraced it.”

At every home game, Judy and Litman are present from when the gates open until after they close. Before gates open, they are walking outside the stadium while Judy sniffs for trouble — or explosives. After the fi rst pitch, the

two enter the stadium and continue to walk around. On average, the two can walk between 3 and 5 miles during each game.

If a unattended bag is found, Litman and Judy go to the scene to check it out. Reardon also utilizes Mall of America K9s and Minneapolis Police Department K9s, but only at about 13 games, whereas Litman and Judy are at all 81 home games.

County details creation of service roads

LEXINGTON — Anoka County officials held an open house at City Hall May 23 to present planned improvements to Lake Drive (CSAH 23) from Lexington Avenue to Restwood Road and Hamline Avenue.

County Engineer Douglas Fischer and his staff were available to answer questions and receive concerns from area residents at the presentation.

Joe MacPherson, assistant county engineer, explained the project to community members. “The plan is, we’re going to connect some existing frontage roads for continuity. We’re trying to remove some accesses for safety reasons, limit the numbers of access to a major thoroughfare,” he stated.

One existing intersection will be improved from a T-intersection with a traffic light into a four-way intersection. Another four-way intersection with stop signs will be moved to the southwest.

Currently, between the strip mall housing Grace Point Family Dentistry and the State Farm office southwest of Lexington Avenue, there are eight driveways accessing Lake Drive on its west side.

Newly constructed N. Highway Drive will serve the businesses in between, as six of the driveways are proposed to be closed off from Lake Drive. Access to Lake Drive will be provided in front of the State Farm office. In addition, there will be an entrance to N. Highway Drive in front of Grace Point Family Dentistry.

The service road will be extended to meet the existing service road near Park View Homes mobile home park, continuing on to a four-way intersection

Circle Pines 'barbecue crew' serves tornado victims

CIRCLE PINES — Jim and Janelle Willard, who have lived in Circle Pines since 2000, were watching the 10 o'clock news a few weeks ago and saw the devastation left from the EF-3 tornado in the Chetek, Wisconsin area.

The National Weather Service reported the tornado had peak winds of around 140 mph. It is also believed to have traversed the longest path, 83 miles, in Wisconsin's history. The storm, which hit May 16, killed one person and left dozens injured and millions of dollars in damage.

The Willards wanted to do something.

“I just thought, 'It is too bad that we can't fi nd something to do for those folks,'” Jim said.

Janelle suggested they bring some food over.

“Initially that was our thought, we would just take some over there.

We are members of the Barbecue Society and the Minnesota Barbecue Crew, so I posted on Facebook and we had people saying they would like to donate some money, they could bring a case of meat, donate chicken — and pretty soon we had a ton of food and we had over a dozen people who volunteered to come and help.”

Jim and Janelle spent two days preparing food and took their large barbecue trailer to Cameron, Wisconsin to serve food to volunteers and local residents affected by the tornado.

They parked their large trailer in the parking lot of a business, packed food into to-go boxes and delivered them to nine different locations.

Barbecue is nothing new for the Willards.

The couple has competed in barbecue

competitions since 2004 and typically take on 15 to 20 competitions a year. For the past three years, they have also competed in the World Food Championships.

“We are both very competitive and we both love food, so it just fit,” Jim recalled.

The Willards, along with other volunteers, served half-pound pulled pork sandwiches, grilled chicken thighs, three sides and a cookie.

They fed around 500 people and before returning to Minnesota, left behind enough meals for the Salvation Army and a local church to serve another 700 people.

“Watching on TV, you just can't get good impression of what it was really like.

In person, it is very devastating. This tornado didn't just blow these mobile homes over, they exploded,” Jim said.

Jim, who grew up in Texas, has seen his fair share of tornadoes.

“Tornadoes were just a fact of life. I never got hit by one, but I've seen hundreds of them in my life and I've seen what they do,” he said.

This is the fi rst time the couple has cooked for a disaster area, but the two have cooked for other charity events including neighborhood block parties and feeding the homeless.

“We are very compassionate people.

The problem with our world here is that it is so polarized. You have got liberals versus conservatives, Vikings versus Packers and compassion transcends all that,” Jim said.

Why isn’t Minnesota full of Bird Cities?

I

t was nearly dusk on the marsh as I walked along the boardwalk at the Birch Lake Rotary Park Preserve in White Bear Lake. I went slowly, listening closely to the chirps of swamp sparrows, the aggressive clamor of red-winged blackbirds and the echoing hoot of a barred owl from the nearby woods. I was searching for the first birds of the year, returning or passing through Minnesota on their spring migration. Suddenly, I saw a tiny creature scuttle under the boardwalk in front of me, and away into the tall grass. After a few minutes, I glimpsed it re-emerge into the open, and saw that it was a Virginia rail, a shy and petite waterbird that I never expected to see in my suburban neighborhood.

There are hundreds of wild spaces like this scattered throughout the Twin Cities metro, which provide safe habitat not only for birds and other wildlife, but a quiet place to take a breather for many humans as well.

In my forays through parks across the Twin Cities, I’m surprised how often I run into other people who are also looking specifically for birds. Birders know the best places in our area to find the particular species they are looking for, and the metro area has an incredible variety of habitats that makes it hospitable to a vast range of species. Even still, many birders are willing to travel from one end of the state to the other to catch sight of that one species they’ve been after.

In Wisconsin, there are cities that have taken advantage of the fact that so many birds – and people – flock to their locales. I recently learned that Osceola, Wisconsin was named the 100th Bird City in Wisconsin.

Bird City Wisconsin was introduced by the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative (WBCI) in 2009, based on the Tree City USA campaign by the Arbor Foundation. The criteria to become a Bird City include creation and protection of habitat, participation in forest management programs, removing bird hazards, educating the public and hosting an International Migratory Bird Day event each year.

Far more recently, the Audubon Society of Minnesota introduced Bird City Minnesota. Hastings was selected as the states’ first Bird City in 2016, followed shortly by St. Paul. The criteria for becoming a bird city is a little bit different – cities must fulfill seven out of 18 areas of best practices for birds in the categories of habitat improvement, threat reduction and citizen engagement. Becoming a bird city can help improve the health of the ecosystem, but has added benefits such as a reputation for conservation, a boost in tourism and a sense of community pride.

Wisconsin has had a big head start, but in only eight years, it managed to declare 100 Bird Cities. I’d love to see some more cities added to the Minnesota roster in 2017 – perhaps in some of our favorite getaway spots, or right here at home.

Many communities have already expressed support of pollinator-friendly resolutions; it seems like they would easily be able to take the next step to make a bird-friendly effort. Lino Lakes would be a shoe-in with its Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Preserve and heron rookery. Stillwater has many wild spaces, along with the St. Croix River Flyway, which funnels thousands of migrating birds every spring and fall. And the wide open lakes and hidden marshes of White Bear Lake harbor hundreds of species, from bald eagles to hummingbirds. Our communities already have a thriving population of bird life – why not make it official?

The budget process

W

ell, it’s that time of the year again when we start to drill down on our city budget for the upcoming year. Over the next few months we will be listening to staff budget recommendations about what they want to spend and discuss what it will cost to provide services for 2018.

This year will be my 18th budget process with city staff so there are a things I have Movers & few learned over the years. We have a Shakers very capable city staff but since Jeff Reinert they usually don’t recommend budget decreases, we need to have a healthy debate about what they recommend.

Every city council has a distinct budget process. Some city councils will let their city staff handle the budget. Staff will recommend increases and the city council then pretty much just approves those increases. After all, who knows more than city staff about how much to spent, right? These cities usually have budgets that are out of control.

Last year staff wanted to raise our budget by over 10 percent even though we have not had much growth in our city. I voted against last year’s budget. This is why it is good to have elected representatives from our community

We must remember that although the management staff are professionals and are just trying to do a good job, they have a government perspective on spending and in almost every case, city management does not live in the city where they work and do not have to pay the tax increases that they recommend.

In Lino Lakes, we have a budget process that is very involved. We listen to budget recommendations and trust what they are telling us but then we verify what we are being told. This is known as “Trust but Verify.” We must determine whether the increases that are being requested are wants or whether they are needs.

This sometimes causes our city staff a little discomfort.

understand that we are just doing our due diligence and trying to do a good job for our residents. In my opinion, our process, although time consuming, always ends up with a better result.

Our process also includes some steps that help to lower the budget even before we discuss staff recommendations.

1) Identify what costs went down. Not every line item in our city budget needs to automatically go up. Certain activity will cause budget line items to go down and they need to be identified.

2) Identify dollars that will be left over from the current year. If we didn’t plow as much snow as was budgeted, we should have money left over.

3) What can we outsource?

Identify activity that may not need to stay in the budget by outsourcing.

4) Find the budget peaks for the coming year. If a line item spikes, find a way to reduce or eliminate the spike. Since government does not like to lower a budget line item, eliminating budget spikes will keep that line item in check.

Our process is not perfect but it has kept our taxes under control especially as compared to other cities, and especially during the recent bad economy. Keeping our city budget in line is one of the most important responsibilities we have as council members.

Grow and bake with rhubarb

R

plenty of water and nitrogen. Should rhubarb produce a ower, cut the stalk as close to the base as possible.

If allowed to ower and set seed, it will take energy away from producing stalks.

Plants should be at least a year old before harvesting.

Begin pulling stalks as soon as they have reached full length, usually twelve inches or more. Rhubarb is pulled rather than Gardener’s cut. Reach down to the bottom of the stalk, Grapevine close to the ground, and ďŹ rmly pull. You Nancy Helms may need to coax it with a small twist and larger stalks may land you on your backside. Cutting is discouraged as it can transfer disease and attract pests.

Use a knife to immediately cut the leaf from the stalk and discard. The leaves of the rhubarb plant are toxic. Keeping the leaves on will make the stalks wilt more quickly. The nub at the base of

hubarb elicits so many childhood memories. On a warm summer day my mother would sit on the back step and give us a stalk of rhubarb with a little dish of sugar. We would suck the sour stalk and then stick in it the sugar, happily doing it over and over again.

Rhubarb is the harbinger of spring and the ďŹ rst harvest from my garden.

I’m planning which of my favorite recipes to bake even before the snow is gone. Although rhubarb is a perennial vegetable, it is cooked as a fruit and often known as ‘pie plant.’ Rich in vitamin C, it was known to prevent scurvy on the plains. There are many different varieties but most of us have been given roots from a friend or relative’s patch. Stalks can be pencil thin or broomstick thick, red or green.

While avor is not correlated with color, red varieties are usually favored for the color they impart to pies, jams and sauces.

Rhubarb requires at least a three by three foot square in the garden. It grows best in cool weather and full sun. It is a heavy feeder and needs

Wash and refrigerate in a plastic bag and use within a week. I ďŹ nd it is best to leave it in whole stalks if not ready to use it right away; once diced it tends to dry out. Easy to freeze, frozen rhubarb tends to get soggy when thawed.

Slice or dice before spreading it on a parchment lined pan. Freeze until ďŹ rm and put into freezer bags for up to a year. I like to bag it premeasured and labeled for my favorite recipes; for example, “2 cups rhubarb for bread/mufďŹ ns.â€? Add the rhubarb to recipes while still frozen as it releases water and doesn’t hold its shape when thawed.

My rule of thumb has been to quit pulling rhubarb by the 4th of July.

On 'crossing the line'

I personally, like a lot of Americans right now, really dislike Mr. Trump for all that he is trying to do and for all that he won't do for the real good of our country and majority of people in it.

Not to forget the rest of the world and our fellow sisters and brothers who are all daughters and sons of our God of many names. But as much as I dislike Mr. Trump I would never wish him any harm outside of prison. Because I have no right to as a citizen of the U.S. and because it's not my way.

Lino Lakes Councilmember Melissa Maher was right, Congressman Tom Emmer did sell us out and we deserve much better. But she is wrong to mention anything haphazardly that might harm him, especially as an elected official. She seems sincere in admitting her mistake and was willing to be censured or whatever the council decided she deserved. Most people cross the line sometime in their lives at one time or another in various degrees. Admitting and sincerely asking for forgiveness is more than some ever do.

Cougar baseball nabs 2 playoff wins, falls in 1-0 heartbreaker

A “heartbreaker” of a loss knocked Centennial baseball into the losers bracket of Section 5AAAA after they opened with two victories last week.

The Cougars (10-7) met Mounds View on Monday, May 29 with the winner advancing to finals against Champlin Park on Wednesday, June 7, 6 p.m., at CHS Field in St. Paul.

Champlin’s Max Loven threw the eight-inning shutout and Centennial ace Kyle Nordby lost despite a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

“We lost a heartbreaker. Kyle deserved better. He pitched a gem,” said Cougar coach Roland Goertzen. “We lost because we did not execute the bunting game.”

Centennial bunted on six occasions, each time either forcing out the runner or popping it up.

It’s been close the whole tournament as the Cougars beat Forest Lake 11-10 and Mounds View 3-2 the first two rounds.

Casey Lieser pitched six strong innings against the Mustangs, and hit a double that led to a run. Nordby finished with three strikeouts.

The Cougars got two runs on Drew Metz’s squeeze bunt with Bryon Pierson and Trei Driskell hustling home.

Centennial boys win 2 section relays, have 5 events in mind at State meet

Centennial’s veteran band of endurance runners are closing the prep careers in style, headed for this weekend’s state track meet in four events.

Jacob Namyst won the 400 meters in 49.41 at the Section 5AA meet Friday, while Reed Kurak took second in the 3200 with 9:26.72.

Namyst and Reed teamed with Dylan Johnson and Bradley Gallagher to win the 4x400 in a season-best 3:21.71, and with Johnson and Andrew Nordquist to take the 4x800 in 8:00.2. All are seniors except Nordquist, a junior.

“These distance boys have created a culture of hard work, discipline and what it means to be part of a team,” said coach Colleen Cardinal. “Day in and day out, they challenge each other, support each other and motivate each other.

‘Reed and Jacob have set the bar high on the performance scale, but it’s how they carry themselves that is the most impressive. Both boys think team first. and then their own personal achievements,” she added.

by senior Keshaun Johnson, whose career-best 22-3 3/4 long jump earned second place. The state meet will be held Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10 at Hamline.

Centennial placed third among 15 teams in the two-day event at Hamline.

Also placing at the section were Nordquist, fifth in the 800; Jonathan Sweeney, fifth in the 3200 and eighth in the 1600; Bradley Gallagher, eighth in the 200; Jacob Steiner, ninth in discus; and the fifth-place 4x100 team of Jesse Bentrup, Riley Trettel, Keshaun and Trevor DeBlieck.

In the Northwest Suburban Conference meet, Centennial won four events and placed third.

Setting a conference 4x400 record were Namyst, Kurak, Johnson and Gallagher (3:23.29). Namyst won the 400 (49.39), Kurak took the 800 (1:58.29), and the 4x800 team of Namyst, Johnson, Nordquist and Kurak won (8:08.16).

Bentrup took fourth in the 100, Jacob Steiner fifth in discus (141-2), Nordquist fifth in the 80, and Story fifth in triple jump and sixth in long jump.

Centennial girls track ended its season with a 10th-place finish at Section 5AA and no state qualifiers last week.

Sara Moen missed “state” by .3 of a second, placing third in the 800 with a career-best 2:17.69, her first time under 2:20.

Marvelous Ngongan took third in discus (112-2).

Also placing were Olivia Anizor, fifth in shot put; Aria Burgess, sixth in the 800; Claire Orth, seventh in the 400 with Mackenzie McDonald ninth; Claire Olson, seventh discus; and Lucia Ranallo, ninth in the 800. for drivers wishing to continue either southwest or northeast on Lake Drive. This will be the improvement to the T-intersection at Griggs Avenue, located near Festival Foods.

The current four-way intersection with stop signs at Restwood Road (near Station 57 and Cowboy’s Saloon) and N. Highway Drive near George’s Auto Service will be relocated.

The new four-way intersection will be installed at Restwood Road to the northwest and Hamline Avenue to the southeast, also connecting to the service roads on either side. Service roads will run parallel to Lake Drive, with access to Lake Drive at the newly relocated intersection or at the Griggs Avenue intersection.

“The completed frontage road system and fourth leg of the intersection at Griggs will allow vehicles to safely cross Lake Drive at a signal,” explained Jason Orcott, design engineer.

The residence at 8893 Hamline Avenue is specifically impacted by the positioning of the service road as it connects to Hamline Avenue; an extended driveway is included in the county improvements.

The majority of public concerns focused on the intersection being moved and further concern about water runoff onto Hamline Avenue by the additional pavement of the service road.

A volunteer firefighter who asked to remain anonymous said the improvements, especially at Griggs Avenue, will improve his response time to get to the fire station.

Lexington City Council held a public hearing May 18 regarding street and sewer improvements on Hamline Avenue, and residents were persistent in voicing their complaints about the lack of stormwater drainage along the street.

Construction is scheduled to begin summer of 2018 and take approximately two months to complete. Although some details are still being fine-tuned, Orcott explained the proposed project has already been included in the 2018 budget and all it needs now is a joint powers agreement with the city, which shouldn't be a problem as the city is supportive of the project.

LEXINGTON CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lexington City Council took the following action at its June 1 meeting: • Heard from Liquor Store Manager Jack Borgan regarding the liquor store report. Sunday sales begin July 2. Sunday hours will be 11 a.m.6p.m. He forecasts the increase in the payroll budget will be offset by a probable decrease in staff hours during the week. He proposed asking the Legislature for an earlier open time during football season.

Borgan noted Sunday is a major shopping day for consumers at big box stores.

Target in Lino Lakes has a small liquor department and it may be Lexington’s biggest Sunday sales competitor due to consumer volume. The liquor store utilizes Facebook and Twitter for social media advertising.

Borgan stated the store had replaced the fluorescent cooler door light bulbs with LEDs. According to XCEL Energy the store should save $1,200-$1,300 per year.

Borgan said more attention had been given to inventory

controls, discrepancies had surfaced in the annual audit.

The purchase agreement is dependent on the approval of the rezoning applications. The DuWayne property was listed for sale in early April.

• Approved to contract with city of Roseville for IT services. City Administrator Bill Petracek received cost estimates to replace the computer network

server in City Hall, which had become out-of-date, too full of data and had no memory left without deleting files. The quote from Marco, the city’s IT vendor, was $24,767 to replace the existing server that would serve the data usage needs for the next 5-7 years.

Petracek contacted the city of Roseville IT department for a quote for utilizing them for cloud-based services and IT support. This came in at $19,414 per year without phone service or liquor store support.

Finance Director Chris Galiov and Petracek provided a financial analysis to the council. Galiov stated “Everybody’s going virtual. You can’t compare the protections, you don’t carry a server, you don’t worry about being frozen up. If you’re not in the business of running servers, you should not be running a server. This is basically priceless.” Petracek stated Circle Pines recently contracted with the City of Roseville IT. It was projected that August is the earliest it would be implemented.

Reserve officer recognized for 20 years of contributions to community

LINO LAKES — A Lino Lakes police reserve captain was recently honored for 20 years of contributions to the department and the community.

Reserve Capt. Andy Bennett was recognized for his years of service

by Public Safety Director John Swenson and the City Council at the May 22 meeting.

“Andy’s drive and volunteerism has been a gift for our agency and community. Andy is a talented individual that has a strong sense of community and we are honored he continues to share his time and talent with us,” Swenson said.

Bennett, a resident of Lino Lakes since 1992, wanted to become a reserve officer to follow in the footsteps of his parents. “I was used to my parents being involved in many different ways in the community, so it was something that I wanted to do too. I wanted to find ways that I could give back to the community and be involved. I don't necessarily have hobbies like reading, fishing, hunting … my hobby is volunteering.”

Bennett was first introduced to the reserve unit while participating in the first Lino Lakes Citizens Public Safety Academy in 1996. During

the experience he met other officers, drove a fire truck, rode along with an officer, visited the jail and put out a simulated car fire.

“I was given the information I needed to make a decision about what I wanted to pursue,” he said. Bennett was considering joining the fire or police division, and ultimately selected police because it fit better with his schedule.

A reserve officer occupies a non-sworn position and does not have the authority to pull someone over or arrest someone. Reserve officers make a commitment of a minimum of 10 hours a month and spend that time doing a variety of duties including being an extra set of eyes and ears, assisting officers by transporting people to jail

or calling for a tow truck, responding to significant events, participating in community festivals and parades and helping with the annual Public Safety Camp.

“The thing that I enjoy the most is being able to give back to the community and develop relationships with

community members, other volunteers and, more importantly, the police officers themselves,” Bennett said. “It is an opportunity for those who are pursing careers in law enforcement to explore what it means to be a reserve and an officer. Getting firsthand experience and understanding of what the job involves is often times eye-opening because you learn about the things that are a part of law enforcement that may not be the glamour and the glitz such as investigations, report writing, politics, dealing with people.”

Reserve officers are required to attend a nineweek (one session a week) academy put on by Anoka County in addition to a 20-hour training officer program, put on by the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department.

One of Bennett's most significant contributions to the department during his

time has been the creation of the LOGGER program, which is used to log and track activity. For 20 years, Bennett's full-time job has been as an IT manager for 3M, so he was able to put his IT knowledge to use.

“There have been significant technological changes. When I began, everything was done on a piece of paper,” he explained. “As technology improved, cars and computer accessibility becoming accessible via laptops and cell phones, the laptop became a component of the officer's tool kit.”

After recording activity in Word and then Excel, he created the system in 2009, which has continued to evolve over the years. Although there are other software programs available, the system is still useful to the department and performs functions other programs cannot handle.

Bennett also serves

as the co-chair of Lino Lakes Volunteers in Police Service, a corporation organized exclusively for nonprofit, public, educational and charitable purposes related to the public safety department.

The organization was a key player in the raising of funds for the department's K-9, Justice.

“It is very humbling to feel appreciated and thanked for my contributions. I really want to send my thanks and gratitude to the public safety department; their support of volunteers, not just the reserve program, but other community members that are donating their time and energy and talent to help build and maintain a safe community,” he said.

CIRCLE PINES — Area residents who sign up for the Centennial Community Education (CCE) “Mind Games” class in June are in for a treat.

The instructor was taught how to play chess and cribbage at age 6 by his great-grandfather.

Brian Bohne, of Circle Pines, learned to play the games of strategy at a young age and it stayed with him. In fact, Bohne packed game boards into his suitcase and kept them with him as he traveled all over the world, both with his family and as a student and teacher.

He has played chess in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He does not speak the languages of these cultures, but found the game of chess to be an ice breaker.

The game itself is a universal language. Deep inside a game, “You could move and play and sort of forget you were incapable of communicating effectively otherwise, and that was refreshing,” he said. A bucket list would include playing chess in Australia and the Antarctic.

Bohne, a teacher at Centennial High School, teaches a Global Leaders class and offers chess and cribbage to students during the Lunch Energize Achieve Participate (LEAP) time period.

He is offering an experienced session of chess and cribbage through CCE in the month of June for those who enjoy a challenge or would like to fi nesse their strategies.

“I hope I can spark some real interest and feed that spark on a lot of different levels, and orchestrate some real fun hours that will just fly by,” Bohne said. “(I want to) give people that lifetime love, interest and skill that can serve PAT ZEITNER I SUBMITTED them all over our country and worldwide.”

Special needs students get messy at the Kids Cooking School

LINO LAKES — Tiffany Cavegn, owner of Kids Cooking School, believes that kids of all abilities should be able to get messy while developing a love for cooking and food.

For the first time in the school's history, wheelchairs were present. Eight special needs students from Rice Lake Elementary walked/wheeled over to the school down the street May 26.

“They are a part of the community too. My hope is that they have a few minutes of normalcy and get to experience the same things that other kids do,” Cavegn said. “Some of them will be lucky enough to be able to cook when they are older, so I hope they develop a love of cooking or a love of eating foods that are made with real food instead of a box.”

The school, located at 6511 Ware Road, is part of a local nonprofit organization Healthy Strong Kids of Minnesota.

Lovgren, who has taught at Rice Lake for 10 years, said the group goes on two community outings a year. Previously, the group went to the Children's Museum but since it has been closed, they needed another field trip.

“We were trying to think of another thing we could do and one of our paraprofessionals told me about the cooking school, so I gave Tiffany a call,” she said. “I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for them to experience something like this. Most of our kids are able to get out, but some of them aren't able to, but this way they can.”

The students, who range in age from kindergarten through fi fth grade, made strawberry muffins from scratch.

Cavegn said the recipe was found on Pinterest, but the special education teachers used a software program to convert the recipe to be more picture-focused, rather than text.

“It is just a regular recipe that is easy to do and allows them to do some things,” Cavegn said. “It is a matter of letting them do what they can do … It is

a great place to be messy.”

Other adaptations were made so all students could participate, including a communication device to display steps in a picture format, along with a measuring cup controlled by an electrical switch and scissors that can be controlled remotely by an electrical connection, making it easier to use.

Lovgren explained some of the students have autism, cerebral palsy or cognitive delays.

Lovgren described the field trip as a culminating event. All year the students have had a cooking unit once a week, but were severely limited in what they could do because they didn't have access to an oven.

Litman has been with Judy since they completed three weeks of training together in Alabama in March. Judy came back a two-year deployment in Baghdad in September 2016, so there was a bit of a transition.

“The work style is different. In Baghdad, it is eight hours of working.

Here, sometimes she is just walking, she is not constantly searching and that is what she wants to be doing,” Litman explained.

“She is curious and loves working.

She has always got to be sniffi ng and she is always wiggling.”

Judy is from K9 Detection Services (AMK9), which is a U.S.-based specialty canine services provider with an extensive background in training, deploying and managing canine teams for explosives, narcotics and other special purposes. AMK9 provides canine detection and security solutions to government agencies, nongovernment organizations and private entities.

Litman, who is a retired federal law enforcement officer, was employed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for 26 years. He found out about AMK9 after another retired ATF agent told him about it. While employed by ATF, Litman was a handler of two dogs. He retired in 2014, became a dog handler with another organization and then started with AMK9 in March.

Judy went through an initial training with a trainer from AMK9.

After that training was complete, Judy along with Litman and an instructor completed another training which included both room searches and vehicle searches.

Before her training was complete, Judy had to pass an odor recognition test. During the test, two circles of 15 cans are set up, some of which are “hot cans.” In order to pass, Judy had to alert every “hot can” within the circles.

“She is the best dog I have ever worked with, the best dog I've ever seen,” Litman said. He recalled in the beginning of training, a couple other handlers were joking around with

him that his “small dog” wouldn't be able to do what their big dogs could do. “A week into training, they were all asking me to trade,” he said. “It's much easier to work with a dog than it is to work with another person.”

Reardon added, “She is a worker.

She just goes, goes, goes.”

Not only does Litman enjoy Judy's presence, but so do the Target Field employees, the fans and especially the children. “All the kids love her. No one is afraid of her, because she is so small,” he said.

Reardon said, “Sometimes it is a detriment because Mike can barely walk 10 feet, whether it be an employee, or a child, or somebody confronting him and wanting to know what he is doing. Mike is dialed so is Judy.”

Overall, people are happy Judy is there sniffi ng away to keep them safe.

“Most people are appreciative of the dogs, especially during these times. The fans have a really positive response to her and the employees always want me to stop so they can say hi,” Litman said.

Two local ladies sing in Sweet Adelines Chorus

Barbershop performances don't always feature a quartet of men donning redstriped suits and straw hats. In fact, the City of Lakes Sweet Adelines chorus is comprised of a large group of talented women who sing everything from Cyndi Lauper to Ella Fitzgerald.

Carol Wiersema, a Lino Lakes resident, has been a member of the chorus for over 50 years, and Diane Moe, a Blaine resident, has been a member for 16. They both treasure their experiences, both near and far, as members of this award-winning chorus.

City of Lakes Chorus The City of Lakes Chorus is a nonprofit organization and a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, which has approximately 30,000 members worldwide.

This chapter has been dazzling audiences in the Minneapolis /St. Paul metro area and around the country since 1952. They have placed first in every regional competition since 1967, and have placed as a top 10 finalist in 17 of the 20 international competitions since 1971.

Wiersema added that “barbershop songs can be adapted (to women's chorus songs) by raising the key. Our songs are arranged for women by women.”

As far as favorite songs go, Moe said, “That's so hard! When you're singing something, it kind of becomes your favorite. A lot comes from the 1940s, but not everything. We've done Boot Scootin' Boogie and Cyndi Lauper.”

There are no striped suits to be found with this chorus. Its members go all out for performances:

more than awards and accolades, however. It is also about fun, travel and friendship. “We do annual shows and performances around the community,” Wiersema explained.

“We were at Como Park recently, and we're going to be singing at Lake Harriet and the Harmony Explosion with another chorus or two … we also do singing valentines,” she noted.

Moe said all of their songs are arranged in the barbershop a cappella style. She explained, “Any song can be made into a barbershop style.”

“We have costumes like you wouldn't believe!” said Wiersema.

Moe added, “What we wear depends on the performance. We always have a 'bling costume' with sequins and glitter.”

The barbershop bug Moe remembers how she got the barbershop bug: “I had a friend whose mother was in the chorus, and she knew I liked to sing … I went one night to listen and that was it,” she remembered.

Wiersema, who received her 50-year member pin in 2015, remembers how she got involved when

she lived in Colorado. “I went with a friend and saw that it's a wonderful organization of women ... you can go all over, and no matter where you go, there are Sweet Adelines who care. It's a wonderful friendly organization.

And it's fun!”

Wiersema added, “you get kind of hooked on it. It has sharpened my music skills, and it gives me joy and friendship and life skills … the biggest thing is having fun singing.”

Moe noted, “We are always open to having new members and we love having visitors. Don't get too hung up on the barbershop label — it isn't four guys standing in a row. It has evolved. We have a lot of fun … and it's challenging.”

Wiersema added, “We want younger ladies and girls to come in. It's for all ages, around 20 something and up … we currently have a lady who is 89.”

Computronix celebrates 10 years in Circle Pines

CIRCLE PINES –– Justin Hardee surrounds himself with hardware all day, but he’s really a people person. He was invited to receive a wooden wall plaque from the Circle Pines City Council on Feb. 14, but he treated his girlfriend to a Valentine’s Day date instead. (He later picked it up, and it’s hanging proudly on his office wall.)

Hardee, a 1998 Centennial graduate, has surrounded himself in Circle Pines with computers and hardware for 10 years. He owns and operates Computronix, a full-service computer store, at 9205 Lexington Ave N. He also knows computer chip manufacturing and is a fan of machine robotics.

Hardee attended the University of Minnesota and Brown Institute. He wore a suit much like that of an astronaut’s to make computer chips in Bloomington.

Things were going well until 9/11. The layoffs came, and it was then that he reassessed what he was doing, and where he was do-

ing it. He decided to come home.

Computronix is the product of a “hometown boy does right” dream. Hardee grew up in Circle Pines and has not relocated — on purpose. “I’m from Centennial, I wanted a computer store here. I wanted to do something I’m good at in my hometown,” he said.

Hardee had been in the strip mall for seven years, then expanded and moved around the corner to a bay, doubling his space.

“Computers, hardware, software, sales and service. Walk in, or at your home or business. If you are a person that’s without a computer or with a computer that’s not working, I want to be that first person you talk to,” he said.

But many local business owners know Hardee from the opposite side of the cash register.

“I went to Gil’s (On Time Bike Shop) on his grand opening and gave him my bike to be refurbished. I was in the (Quality Aquatics) pet shop. I’ve helped (La' Unique Boutique) out next door,” Hardee stated. He’s even been seen at the DMV near the

end of the mall fixing a sudden printing problem.

“You have to respect where you eat. You have to pay back where payback is due for people helping you. I wouldn’t be here 10 years in business if people hadn’t helped me,” he said.

Hardee supports local students attending a robotics event at Boost Engineering Science and Technology (BEST) Robotics. Located in New London, Minnesota, every fall it hosts a robotics challenge for Minnesota high school and middle school students. “Robotics is going to be helpful to us in more ways than we can even imagine right now,” he noted.

Hardee said he demonstrates artificial intelligence every day in his shop. “Hey Siri, call Dad,” he said, laughing. Hardee’s parents helped him with his start-up, and he called it a family-owned business. “I owe it to them, I thank them,” he said.

Computronix has no big box store nearby giving him direct competition. Best Buy is not looking to build in The Village in Blaine, and Radio Shack is gone.

He acknowledged the internet as competition, but with limits.

“People want to be able to see it and touch it and feel it and know they like it. I have a lot of customers tell me they’re not buying this computer because it’s that computer, they’re buying it because I’m selling it to them,” he said.

Hardee projected computers are always going to get smaller and easier to use, but there will always be problems. “There’s

always a need for support. I help everybody from IT people to somebody’s grandma,” he said.

To thank his customers, Hardee said he is offering 25 percent off service and $50 off any computer for the rest of 2017.

“There’s something to be said about feeling comfortable knowing you don’t have to go into the big city to go to work. I stay plenty busy here,” he said. “I make house calls.”

Tickborne illness expert provides free Lyme education to physicians

Though recent headlines alerted Minnesotans to the threat of tickborne virus Powassan, Dr. Elizabeth Maloney of Wyoming said it's not as alarming as the headlines would have you believe.

There have been about 20 cases of Powassan in Minnesota since 2008, so it isn't a new threat. While Powassan is something to be concerned about, Maloney said that Lyme and other illnesses are much more likely to affect the lives of Minnesotans.

“I'm not sure why there was so much aggressive reporting about (Powassan) recently,” she said. “I don't know if it's also because it's borne by blacklegged ticks. It is a serious illness if you contract it, but in the grand scheme of things Lyme is much more serious.”

Maloney's mission is provide education about tickborne illness to medical practitioners all over the state of Minnesota and beyond. She runs the website LymeCME, which offers free, accredited continuing education modules about tickborne disease.

Maloney confirmed that this year is expected to have a high tick population, mostly due to a mild winter and lots of spring moisture.

“Ticks dry out easily, so when we have a moist spring after a mild winter, we have greater number of ticks,” she said. “They are built to survive winter; they have antifreeze in their blood. It only takes one tick to infect someone.”

to humans is the blacklegged tick, also known as the deer tick. It is one of the smallest, and difficult to detect on clothing and skin. It can carry Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis and a variety of other diseases, causing an unpredictable range of symptoms such as fever, nausea, severe joint pain and more. A person can be infected without showing symptoms for months or even years, and diagnosis is tricky. That's why Maloney wants to provide education to as many physicians as she can.

“Continuing medical education for physicians is my target audience,” she said. “I do that online so they can do it when it's convenient, and it's accredited, because they have to have so many credits per year. And it's all free.

I think we're getting more (participants) now, so we're hoping to climb over (the) couple hundred mark soon.

It's tricky because physicians are wary because Lyme remains a controversial illness.”

The controversy stems from the fact that there are so many unknowns about Lyme disease, she explained.

“We don't know why some people don't respond to treatment,” she said. In treatment trials, 20-25 percent of those infected still do not feel well after the six-month mark. “We don't know why the bacteria settles in certain places in the body as opposed to others, and we don't know how to control the immune response when someone is infected, because in early cases (the immune system) is not as effective as it should be, and sometimes it goes into overdrive. And then there's a whole genetic component we don't really understand.”

Maloney said that medical schools and training programs can sometimes present a “black-and-white picture” of Lyme disease.

“Physicians don't understand the various symptoms and patterns Lyme disease could present,” she said. “I picture it as a puzzle. If you don't know what your puzzle is

depicting, you need a lot of puzzle pieces to figure it out.”

For example, many people are taught that the rash that might indicate Lyme disease looks like a bullseye, but only about 20 percent of these rashes actually appear that way. In 30 percent of cases, there is no rash at all.

“So if I'm teaching physicians, it's more likely that they would have no rash,” Maloney said. “So we have to reteach them what to look for.”

Since Lyme is difficult to diagnose and might be present even when tests come back negative, Maloney said the best way to treat it is to begin Lyme treatment for anyone who comes in complaining of symptoms that sound like a “summertime flu.” This might include fever, muscle aches and sore throat.

“If they do (report) that during what we call tick season, physicians in our area should be so suspicious of Lyme disease that they should opt to treat those people,” she said. “Testing is likely to be negative even in someone who truly has Lyme disease.”

If you do decide to spend time outdoors, particularly in areas that are damp or have long, thick grass, Maloney said the best defense is permethrin-treated clothing.

Permethrin is an insecticide — unlike insect repellents, it kills ticks that come into contact with it. Permethrin treatments can be purchased at many local outdoors and sporting stores.

“An ounce of permethrin is worth a pound of antibiotics,” Maloney said. “So they never get a tick bite, and they'll never need antibiotics.”

For those who want to learn more about tickborne illness, Maloney recommends www.partnershipfortickbornedieaseseducation.org as a useful resource for anyone who plans to spend time in the great outdoors this summer.

Another resource for tickborne illness in the Twin Cities metro area is the Minnesota Lyme Association (MLA) support group, which meets one Tuesday each month at the White Bear Lake District Center. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and the group hosted several public events over the weekend of May 5-7. This included an awareness walk around the Mall of America and a fundraiser performance of “Church Basement Ladies” at the Plymouth Playhouse.

The MLA often invites speakers from medical and scientific fields to share their knowledge with the group.

Dr. Meaghan Kirschling of Natural Medicine of Stillwater was the guest at the May 9 meeting. Kirschling discussed small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), a medical condition that has similarities to Lyme, but often goes undetected. Multiple inmates escape Minnesota Correctional Facility in Lino Lakes

LINO LAKES—The Department of Corrections (DOC) has launched an investigation, after multiple inmates from Minnesota Correctional Facilities escaped from the Lino Lakes facility after stealing a van Friday, May 26.

According to the DOC, an offender took control of a 2011 white Ford van with Minnesota license plate 937 EPJ with multiple offenders in the vehicle.

"The offender transportation van was driving from the MCF-St. Cloud with stops at several Minnesota Department of Corrections facilities. There were nine offenders in the van when it was overtaken at the Lino Lakes facility," said DOC Communications Director Sarah Fitzgerald. "Five offenders were apprehended in the Mounds View area by local law enforcement, and three were apprehended in North Minneapolis."

All offenders were apprehended the

same day of the incident. Offenders who were apprehended in the Mounds View area include: Vance Erik Jourdain, Edward Washington, Shawn Lee Jackson, Anthony Dwayne Alexander and Dylan Cantrell Bathke.

Offenders Mitchell Dale Saltzman, Paul Jerome Thunder and Kevin Ladell Mitchell were apprehended in north Minneapolis.

The last offender, James Douglas Mitchell, was apprehended at the I-35W and 8th Street SE bridge in Minneapolis later that day.

Centennial High School (CHS) was notified of the incident and held a brief lockdown.

"The District was notified by the Lino Lakes Police Department of a potential threat in the Lino Lakes vicinity," Superintendent Brian Dietz wrote in an email to staff and parents. "After conferring with a representative of the police department, we were notified the potential threat was no longer in our communities. We are in contact with

local authorities if anything changes."

CHS Principal Tom Breuning sent out a similar email informing parents of the incident. "The high school was notified of a threat in the community right before the passing period," he wrote. "Students were held in the two high school buildings as a precautionary measure until we received the okay from the police department we can resume all normal activity. We are in contact with local authorities if anything changes."

The preliminary investigation suggests that the other eight offenders (not including Mitchell) were not involved in any criminal activity and they were all cooperative when apprehended.

The DOC and the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department are now conductinG an investigation into potential crime activity involving Mitchell.

Upon completion, the investigation will be given to the Anoka County Attorney's Office for possible charges.

The investigation also includes an administrative investigation to review staff actions, transportation policies and protocols. All staff who were involved in the incident are back on duty.

“In this work, we are not immune to volatile incidents. We are relieved that there were no injuries to citizens, law enforcement or our staff, and that the situation was brought to conclusion with James Douglas Mitchell being apprehended that afternoon,” said Deputy Commissioner Terry Carlson.

The DOC released a statement, "We extend our thanks to law enforcement, the public, the media and agency staff for their assistance during the search for the offenders."

POLICE REPORTS The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers conducted a traffic stop in the 7000 block of 21st Avenue in Centerville May 26. The driver was found to have a suspended license in addition to outstanding warrants. The driver was arrested.

• Officers were dispatched to Lexington on May 26 on report of a suicide attempt/threat of a juvenile female. The female was located and transported by ambulance to the hospital.

• Officers were dispatched to Circle Pines May 27 regarding a suicide threat regarding a Facebook comment. Officers spoke with the suspected party and there were no issues.

• Officers responded to 200 North Star Lane in Circle Pines May 29 on a burglary report at the city pumphouse building. Unknown suspects forced their way into the building and caused minor damage. There is no suspect information and the damage was under $300.

The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer stopped a vehicle for driving without taillights in the 1800 bock of I-35W May 24. The driver was subsequently arrested for driving after cancellation-inimical to public safety.

• Officers responded to the 7700 block of Carole Drive May 24 on a report of domestic assault.

A male was arrested for fi fth-degree domestic, second-degree assault, threats of violence and false imprisonment. The male was transported to jail.

• Officers stopped a 20-year-old male in the 8000 block of I-35E May 25 for making an illegal U-turn.

The male was subsequently arrested for thirddegree possession, metal knuckles, over 1.4 grams of marijuana in a motor vehicle, paraphernalia,

Officers spoke to the driver and determined he was driving slowly due to a dare. He was advised and apologized for his driving conduct.

• Officers responded to a vehicle fi re in the 8000 block of I-35E May 29. Officers were able to extinguish the fi re. There were no injuries and only minor damage to the vehicle.

• Officers responded to the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue May 30 on report of a runaway juvenile.

Officers learned the juvenile had committed multiple thefts and was arrested for those offenses.

The Twin Cities didn’t have to wait long to experience its first 90° day; in fact, we rattled off three consecutive days of 90° temperatures, June 2-4. The worst of the three days of 90° days was felt on Saturday when dew points rose into the low 60’s. Even though it reached 90° on Sunday, a front brought in drier air where dew points fell into the upper 30’s. My station missed out on reaching 90° on any of the three days but I’m sure it won’t be long before I do record one.
