He had completed three years of college when the insurance agency he was working for part-time offered him a full time job with benefits. “I was still a young guy then, and they offered me a new

Fire chief responds to teach hot social sport

CIRCLE PINES — More than 20 residents from the Quad area and further afield fi lled the pickleball courts at Inner Park to learn how to play the fastest growing sport in America.

Centennial Community Education (CCE) teamed up with the city of Circle Pines to offer a few free “Learn to Play Pickleball” courses this summer. The fi rst one was held May 17.

The pickleball courts at Inner Park were installed last summer and outfitted with nets this summer in a joint effort between the Slipka Foundation and the city of Circle Pines.

When CCE Director Cori Sendle heard that Centennial Fire District’s Chief Harlan Lundstrom was an avid pickleball player, she approached him to see if he would consider teaching some classes. He gladly obliged.

“The more I can teach, the better. I love to play and teach,” Lundstrom said.

Lundstrom’s background is in tennis. He grew up playing tennis in high school and competing at state tournaments. After he graduated he continued to play in competitive tournaments.

Five years ago, Lundstrom traveled to Arizona to visit his wife Karla’s family. Her uncle taught Lundstrom to play. Every winter since, Lundstrom has gone back to Arizona to play.

“It’s my fi x for the year. When I come back here I can’t fi nd anyone to play with,” he said.

Lundstrom hopes the more people he teaches to play, the more people he will have to enjoy the game with in Minnesota.

Hail was also a major threat. Hail larger than golf balls was reported in Hugo, Blaine, Anoka and St. Cloud. According to the National Weather Service, hail in Lino Lakes remained on the ground for 20 hours after the storm, and the largest hailstone reported in the state that day was 3.5 inches in diameter.

In addition to the damage, the tornado took a life.

Two-year-old Nathaniel, son of Hugo residents Gerard and Christina Prindle, was killed and his 5-year-old sister Annika also suffered severe brain damage.

May 25, 2008, is a day Hugo resident Gina Duncanson will never forget. She moved into the Creekview Preserve neighborhood in Hugo in 1999. Creekview Preserve was in the direct path of the tornado and was completely ripped apart.

That Memorial Day weekend, Duncanson and her oldest son, who was a junior in high school at the time, stayed home while her husband and two daughters went to Stillwater for a boat ride. The family had heard on the news earlier that day there was a possibility for severe storms but didn’t really think anything of it.

Gina went on a routine fire call and was fi lling up her car with gas when she noticed it was getting really dark as she began to head north on Highway 61. That’s when she heard a page come through on her scanner that Washington County was under a tornado advisory.

“I called my son and told him to shut the garage door, watch news and pay attention. Well, being a teenager, he was watching a movie and proceeded to sit in the living room and watch the movie,” she said.

She started her short drive home. “As I continued to drive home, what looked to me like a wall of rain turned out to be the tornado. It was a wall, it was by no means like the funnel cloud that you see on the news,” she said. “I drove right into it along with some other cars. It was extremely loud, and there was debris fl ying everywhere.”

Once she realized she was right in the middle of the storm, Duncanson pulled over and took cover under her dashboard. “It seemed like within seconds it was done,” she recalled. Despite the debris all over the road, she managed to make it home to check on her son and access the damage.

“I later found out that when the windows started exploding, my son went to go downstairs and saw our dog sliding across the deck. He went out there to get our golden retriever and by the grace of God he didn’t have one scratch on him,” she said.

Duncanson’s house was destroyed — the entire garage was virtually missing and there was insulation, glass shards and shingles everywhere.

That’s when Duncanson kicked into firefighter mode, forgot about her own circumstances and joined the fire department to help her neighbors.

“I remember thinking it was like the twilight

zone. There was nobody around,” she said. “We went through yelling in houses, asking if anybody needed help, marking doors that they had been cleared, shutting off gas ...”

Like many other families in the neighborhood, her family spent the fi rst week following the storm at the White Bear Country Inn, which Duncanson called “Camp Hugo.” Her family then lived in a couple of townhomes before they were able to move back into their home on Feb. 28, 2009.

Duncanson reflected the incident and the extensive media storm coverage really put Hugo on the map. “I am a flight attendant, and travelers would ask me all the time about where I lived. When I told them Hugo, they immediately knew where that was and asked, ‘Isn’t that where that tornado was?’”

Despite still getting choked up about the details of that day a decade ago, Duncanson feels the community is stronger.

“It’s nothing anybody wants to go through, but at the same time it’s something that we got through together and had to really depend on each other and have patience and understanding,” she said. “We really came together as a community. Total strangers came out and were willing to help and do anything that was needed just to help people get on their feet.”

Tragedy develops community’s neighbor-helping-neighbor mentality

HUGO — It has been 10 years since the EF-3 tornado ripped through the cities of Hugo, Lino Lakes, Blaine and surrounding areas on Memorial Day weekend, causing the death of 2-year-old Nathaniel Prindle and wreaking havoc on families, homes and businesses.

Despite the tragic loss of life and mass devastation that occurred on May 25, 2008, many city residents and city leaders who helped coordinate response efforts continue to take great pride in how the community came together to support, comfort and help one another and do what they needed to do to rebuild.

Washington County Commissioner Fran Miron was Hugo’s mayor at the time of the disaster. His dairy and crop farm was damaged in the storm.

“I didn’t really know at that point that a tornado had touched down or the magnitude of the damage or where it even had happened,” Miron reflected. “I got a call from my son, who was in Mankato at the time. He said all the news reports were indicating that a tornado had struck Hugo

and it was really serious.”

That’s when Miron said his emergency management training kicked into gear and he hitched a ride with a family member to the Hugo Fire Hall to see what he could do to help. “As a mayor and a City Council, we had gone through emergency management preparedness and training just a few years prior. You don’t expect to ever use that, but it came in handy and we had a plan,” he said. “I recall going through that training and wondering why I was doing this, not ever anticipating using the lessons that we were learning in that process, but I certainly recognize the importance of that now.”

Since his own family was going through some of the same losses, it really helped him to empathize with the residents and understand what their needs were. “I had some insight into what other people were thinking and feeling and I think that helped me in managing that situation in my role,” he said.

To this day, Miron has a tremendous amount of pride in the outpouring of support and help from community members and strangers. “We never would’ve gotten through that ordeal without the neigh-

“I’ve always felt that adversity has the opportunity to build stronger people and stronger character. There is no question in my mind that Hugo grew in that respect, in character, in their attitude and caring about their neighbors.”

When the tornado blasted through town in 2008, Mayor Tom Weidt was a member of the Planning Commission. Immediately after the tornado passed through, he drove from his home in southern Hugo to assess the damage and provide assistance, but he got caught in the hailstorm. “It sounded like my car was getting hit by coffee cans and baseball bats,” he recalled.

Immediately after the storm, Weidt said the volunteerism kicked in. “There was an instant response,” he said.

On a more personal level, the tornado was what spurred Weidt’s interest to stay involved with city government and expand his role. “I really enjoyed the process and the situations that came up. It opened my eyes to the council, the mayor and what a great situation we had here with the people and the City Council,” he said.

On a community level, the tragedy strengthened the community. “It made them realize that we can survive through disasters and rebuild and come out stronger than ever,” he said.

City Administrator Bryan Bear was the city’s community development director at that time. He said within a week or two after the storm, Hugo was in a pretty good position from a public cleanup standpoint.

forward. “I am really proud of our city and how it was handled. Everyone came together—residents, businesses, neighboring cities, the state ... there was a lot of support, and the result was very good. I think we remained a strong community afterwards,” Bear said.

It wasn’t until a year later when it finally began to look as though the tragedy had never struck. Despite the losses, negative impacts and horrible memories from the storm, there were a lot of positive impacts too.

“It really helped to strengthen relationships,” Bear noted, “and make us more connected than we were before. We as a community absolutely appreciate each other ... as devastating as it was, there are some lasting community impacts that I think are positive.”

Centerville approves port-a-potty...for now

If the portable ADA compliant restroom in Cornerstone Park during the summer water ski show season becomes a nuisance, it has to go.

That was the consensus at the Centerville May 9 City Council meeting, after council, by a vote of 2-2 denied a motion to rescind an April 25 motion authorizing placement of a port-a-potty at Cornerstone Park. The restroom would be in use for the four months of summer at a cost of $210 using funds from the Parks Maintenance portion of the General Fund. With Council Member D. Love absent, a tie vote killed any motion, according to parliamentary meeting rules.

Although the April 25 council vote was unanimous, a reversal by the Parks & Recreation Committee to now recommend rescission, along with a letter by Centerville resident Wendy Brilowski expressing concern about the port-apotty, induced council to revisit its decision.

Brilowski told council members that she and

her husband did not want a porta potty in front of their home due to the number of people who use that park. In addition, Cornerstone Park has been a lovely park, with people there all day long visiting, she said. However, the planned location of the porta potty was right next to benches. “I don’t see people sitting on those benches right next to the potties,” she said. She added that the site was on a dangerous curve with limited space. “Use of the park is getting bigger and bigger, which is good,” she said. “But I wouldn’t like to see a whole bunch of problems, primarily safety issues.”

“I wasn’t big on it originally,” said Council Member Steve King who voted for rescission.

There hadn’t been a request for a port-a-potty, except by the water ski club, said Council Member Russ King, who also voted to rescind. He suggested the city try out the port-a-potty for a month to see if people use it. “If I’d read (Brilowski’s) letter before I voted for the port-a-potty the fi rst time, I would never have voted for it,” he said. Litter and trespassing are greater concerns than where the city should place the port-a-potty, he noted.

“Tell a little kid to hold it for 45 minutes,” said Council Member Matt Montain, who voted to keep the potty.

“The water show getting bigger is the reason for the porta potty,” said Mayor Jeff Paar, who also voted to keep the potty. “It’s a big opportunity to have the Bald Eagle Water Ski Club coming to town and bringing in a lot of people.”

City Administrator/Engineer Mark Statz moved the ongoing discussion to its conclusion by reminding council that while staff would carry out whatever action the council directed, the city would fi nd itself on a wild goose chase trying to fi nd another place to install the port-a-potty for the ski shows.

For the moment, then, the porta potty stays in Cornerstone Park, and the city will install private property signs and fencing to get people to go where the potty actually is.

“If it fails, I have no problem taking it out,” Paar said.

ny first job is one to remember, whether a good experience or bad. We learn from doing-some of us even more than others. Summer jobs for first-timers range from lawn mowing, landscaping or working at restaurants or retail counters. Some of my friends from high school to this day talk about working at Wild Mountain Ski Area with the alpine slides, canoe rental and riverboats. Others tried their hand at Pine Tree Apple Orchard or with the Parks and Rec programs. A few of my friends had paper routes, or caddied at the Dellwood and White Bear Yacht Club. My sister was a nanny. Most of these jobs are still popular locally Publisher’s today. However, with minimum wage on the increase, small busiView ness employers have been priced out of the market. Starting seeing kids and bikes Do you remember the bright yellow “Start Seeing Motorcycles” bumper sticker from the 1980s? It was a brilliant campaign created by great minds right here in the northeast metro. One of our neighbors was involved in the campaign and tells the story of being distracted and accidentally hitting my brother as he crossed Lake Avenue on his new blue Schwinn bike. Back then, the accident was not caused by texting on a cell phone. Accidents happen even when you are paying attention. This summer as schools let out around our communities and kids are out walking, biking and skateboarding, lets all do our best to start seeing kids and bikes.

Beekeeping Last week my 13-year-old daughter and I suited up and tended to our two bee hives. As rookie beekeepers, it’s pretty intimidating to open up a hive for the first time, and I know that staying calm is important. Abbey and I both were interested in finding the queen bee, which she has named “Beeyoncé.” As we inspected the 10 frame boxes, it was truly amazing to see thousands of dark golden colored honey bees at work.

As we finished up the inspection we felt like all signs pointed to adding a second box to each hive.

One task is smoking the bees, which helps keep them in the hive. We used a traditional smoker and burned a combination of burlap sack and clean blank newspaper. As we worked on the hive you could hear the bees’ tone change. We quickly got acquainted and only a few of the bees seemed ticked off at us. Those were clearly the protectors of the hive. It’s been fascinating to learn about the different roles of the members of the hive. If you are curious about beekeeping, take a course, then find a mentor, and lastly buy the equipment. I found my hives with a tiny ad in this newspaper. Remember to check with your city or township regulations.

I started the process on Nov. 11, 2017 with a bee permit. It required permission from all neighbors within 100 feet of the property. Getting permission was easy. The hard part was meeting my city’s requirement for bee keeping, since it’s an uncommon permit. You really need to plan a year ahead.

Anoka County recognizes ‘Recycling Champions’ Anoka County Recycling & Resource Solutions recently held its 29th annual Recycling Recognition Awards ceremony. The event recognized municipalities, haulers and service providers who assisted Anoka County residents with recycling 233,000 tons of materials in 2017. In all, 53 percent of waste generated in the county was recycled, 20,000 tons more than the previous year.

Shoreview fi rst in northeast metro to restrict young adult tobacco sales TOBACCO AND TOBACCO-RELATED DEVICES DEFINED

This summer, tobacco and related devices will no longer be sold to people under the age of 21 within city limits.

The change to the city’s ordinance was made May 7 in front of about 30 youth wearing T-shirts promoting the “Tobacco 21” initiative, a national campaign that has begun to influence the state.

Shoreview is the sixth municipality in the state to adopt a law restricting tobacco sales to those 21 or older. Last May, Edina was the fi rst.

Students from Mounds View High School spoke to the City Council about why they wanted it to increase the minimum purchasing age from 18 to 21.

Classmates use e-cigarettes in the parking lot, school bathrooms, at home and at parties, said senior Meghan McFarling, who was last year’s National Youth Ambassador for Minnesota with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Vaping among youth has exploded in popularity, McFarling said. E-cigarettes and Juuls create a vapor laced with nicotine. They come in different shapes and flavors so that adults do not even sometimes recognize them as a nicotine device. They can be recharged in computers.

Students said they see classmates using Juuls and vapes in the school hallways and under their desks in class. Bathrooms have been closed temporarily because so many students are vaping inside. Students said raising the minimum purchasing age from 18 to 21 will make it harder for younger students to access the products since they know lots of 18-year-olds, but not many 21-year-olds.

Community members also spoke in favor of the new ordinance.

Dr. Mark Eggen, who lives in Shoreview, said Juuls create nicotine addiction despite the manufacturer’s claims to help smokers choose a better alternative.

“They are not like things the medical community advocates to quit smoking — like nicotine patches,” Eggen said.

“These I look at as stepping stones to using tobacco.”

Shoreview Human Rights Commission member Eugene Nichols, who is also on the Saint Paul-Ramsey County Public Health’s Community Health Services Advisory Committee, said tobacco is the number one preventable cause of death in the state. “We cannot allow the tobacco industry to prey on another generation,” he said.

Minnesota youth nicotine use increased last year for the fi rst time since 2000 due to a recent increase in e-cigarette and vaping device use, according to a Minnesota Department of Health survey. Data shows 1 in 5 high school students use e-cigarettes, a 50 percent increase since data was last collected

Opposition cites ‘competitive disadvantage’

The Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce opposed the ordinance because it would cause a “competitive disadvantage” to gas stations in the city, said Board Chair Andy Voorhees. Three of the city’s seven convenience stores have competition literally across the street, he said. “You have shopping patterns that you are changing,” he noted.

He said he applauded the city for trying to protect youth from tobacco, but said the change should be made at the state level.

“I think we are delusional if we think something like passing this ordinance is going to change smoking behaviors, because we all know the power of addiction,” he said.

J.R. Fielding & Co. tobacco shop owner David Beahrs likened the Tobacco 21 law to what happened in Chicago in 1925

during the national prohibition. He said the law would just put money into the hands of criminals who will sell tobacco illegally. “In prohibition is profit,” he noted.

He said his shop sells responsibly and doesn’t cater to the high school crowd.

He said it would be wrong to not be able to sell a 20-year-old combat veteran a celebratory cigar. Beahrs left in a huff after expressing angst toward the council that the day also happened to be the sixth anniversary of a decision by a preceding council to ban smoking in his shop.

The city has 10 businesses that are licensed to sell tobacco, said Renee Eisenbeisz, assistant to the Shoreview city manager. They were all notified of the potential law change and the city heard from two who oppose the law.

The city’s Economic Development Commission opposed the ordinance, Eisenbeisz reported. The commission had recommended 7-1 not to increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco because it would put the city’s businesses at a competitive disadvantage to other cities. They said the tobacco sale age should be increased at the state level. A bill for a Tobacco 21 law was discussed at the Legislature this year but has not advanced.

Undivided council support: City decisions influence state

Councilman Cory Springhorn said cities often lead the way to a state change.

He cited as an example the city of Moose Lake, which was the first to prohibit smoking in bars and restaurants years ago. The change swept to other cities and, fi nally, the state level. He said he plans to make an effort to mitigate lost sales to Shoreview businesses by trying to buy gas only in Shoreview. He said he hopes bordering cities will pass a similar ordinance.

Councilman Terry Quigley said he grew up in the “smoking generation” and although he never smoked he has

experienced health issues due to secondhand smoke. He is a former president of the American Lung Association in Ramsey County.

Mayor Sandy Martin said she agreed with the Twin Cities Chamber that the state ought to pass a law but noted that cities play an influential role in gaining the state’s attention.

“We waited a whole year for the state to do something and thought it might happen, but we have been told by legislators it is more likely to happen if cities continue to pass (tobacco sales restriction ordinances),” she said. “We would like it if cities in Ramsey County would follow our lead.”

The city has a 30-year history of being on the cutting edge of tobacco restriction. In 1990, it was the second city in the state to restrict tobacco products in vending machines, Martin said. White Bear Lake was fi rst.

Shoreview’s newest ordinance will become effective July 1. It includes restrictions on tobacco-related products and tobacco-related devices. Other cities in Minnesota that have adopted a Tobacco 21 law include Bloomington, North Mankato, Plymouth and St. Louis Park, Eisenbeisz said. Falcon Heights passed the same ordinance two days after Shoreview on May 9.

Five states have such laws — California, Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey and Oregon, according to the Tobacco 21 website. About 300 cities and counties across the nation have adopted the change.

expect include carrying a 60-pound bucket of rocks, climbing monkey bars, lugging double 40-pound sandbags, slogging through waste-level water where you duck under a barrier, splashing through mud, hoisting a 130-pound bag on a pulley, climbing over a wall, crawling under barb wire or over rocks, climbing ropes and traversing a “twitterer” (grabbing pegs on a round rating board).

If you are a military veteran, and this sounds like something you did in Basic Training, you are correct.

OCR was invented by a British Special Forces veteran about 15 years ago. OCR trickled across the Atlantic, corporate American got hold of the idea and it took off.

John, as assistant coach for Centennial cross country and track for 13 years, organized the Coach K Challenge last June for Cougar athletes who heard about OCR from him and wanted to give it a try.

“I beat them all,” John said, who set up a mini-course at his home consisting of sand bag carries, tire flip, rope climb, spear throw, a few grip obstacles and a bucket carry. Adam Namyst, currently a junior, scored highest among the teen group.

“We’ll be doing another one in June,” he added.

John was a track and cross country athlete in high school in Burlington, Wisconsin, and continued in cross country at UW-Lacrosse. Carie was a sprinter and volleyball player in high school at Winona Cotter.

In OCR, John usually places high in his age group while finishing middle of the pack overall.

“These are guys who were college All-American cross country runners, people like that, in their 20s and 30s. If I

The Kretschmer on Oakwood Lane in Lino Lakes are nice neighbors but they do seem a little odd sometimes.

Like when John is spotted carrying a five-gallon pail of rocks down the sidewalk for no apparent reason, or when Carie is seen flinging spears into a straw bale in the back yard.

Don’t be concerned about that. This middle-aged but superbly fit couple, is just training for their next OCR — Obstacle Course Racing, which they describe as the “fastest growing sport” in the country. They have been eager participants the last three years.

“I wanted something else besides just running, and I wanted to build a little more muscle,” said John, 47, who had been doing road and trail races, including three marathons, along with triathlons and duathlons.

“Then I saw a Spartan OCR race on TV four years ago,” he said.

Intrigued, the 5-9, 140-pound athlete trained for the 2015 Spartan Sprint Race in Welch Village, near Red Wing.

He did poorly, but was hooked. (There are two OCR styles, Spartan and Savage.)

“I used that for motivation for the next one. Carie said she wanted to do it, too. We are both very competitive.”

Carie, 45, who had been running road/trail races, including one marathon, joined John at the 2016 Welsh Village OCR, and made top three in Masters.

“I like to push my body. I’ve actually put on five pounds of muscle since I’ve started OCR,” said Carie. Indeed, her shoulder and arm muscles are seen rippling on a video of a novice Ninja competition she recently won, as part of her training.

The Kretschmer’s ran in five OCRs last year and kicked off their busy 2018 schedule May 19 at the SoCal California Spartan Beast Race in Big Bear, Califorina. John placed 27th of 279 in his age group. Carie placed 35th in the Elite Female division, while battling a hamstring injury.

They are signed up for races every two weeks through the summer. Next is Welch Village, the lone Minnesota event, on June 9.

“OCR has become a big part of our lives,” John said. “It has changed the way we approach exercising, out of the normal running/biking routines.”

The junior pitcher/ second baseman has pitched 66 innings with 86 strikeouts against 19 walks and a 2.15 ERA. In recent games, she struck out 11 in a 9-1 win over Park Center, delivered a tworun triple in a 9-2 win over Champlin Park, and pounded a two-run homer in a 4-3 loss to Stillwater.

ever made top 30 in a race, I’d be pretty happy, but top three for my age group is always my goal.”

Carie had podium finishes (top three) in the Masters Division in four of her five races in 2017. This year, they eliminated the Masters, so she’s competing in open divisions, and hoping she can get through all six races with her leg issue. “I’m very nervous about it,” she said. But she held up well in the California race despite 5,200 feet of elevation.

Carie has a personal trainer, Sarah Schoback, an American Ninja Warrior contestant, at her Edina gym, Obstacle Academy. Schoback is sponsoring the Kretchmer’s this year under the name “Obstacle Academy Pro Team.” John and Carie spend Monday evenings at Lochness Park in Blaine, running

hills and intervals, lifting weights and scaling obstacles. Carie, who works at home as a day care provider, pumps up her upper body at Body Rejuvenation.

John, on the road much of the time as a salesman for Cardinal Health, works out mainly on his own with his bucket of rocks, sand bag and running.

They have two grown children: Jacob, 25, who was in football, cross country and track at CHS, and Lexi, 23, who ran cross country six years, joining her dad. Jake plans to make his OCR debut with them at Welch Village.

John wishes he’d been their age when OCR came along.

“Oh, 100 percent yes. If I could have started in my late 20’s, early 30’s, I wonder what I could have done,” John said.

SPORTS BRIEFS Setback for top-seeded Cougar softball team in sectionals

Top-seeded Centennial took a tumble in the Section 5AAAA softball playoffs Tuesday with an 8-2 loss to Champlin Park, a team they had beaten 9-1 in conference play a week earlier.

The Cougars (15-4), who average nine runs per game, were limited to five hits by Piper Otto, whom they beat last week. Meanwhile, Holly Blaska blasted two homers (four RBI’s) and two singles for the Rebels (13-8).

Grace Gilmore (taking the loss) and Alyssa Montero pitched for Centennial and Julia Azure had two hits.

After the loss, the Cougars (15-4) needed to win five straight games to capture the championship in the double elimination tournament, which concluded Monday. (The Quad had an early deadline for this edition due to Memorial Day).

The Cougars beat Park Center 9-1 in the section opener with Montero pitching. Olivia Beaulieu hit a solo home run (the team’s 21st homer) and Madi Newman had a single, triple and two RBIs.

Cougar baseball cruises 9-0 over Pirates in conference finale

Centennial baseball banged out 17 hits in a 9-0 win over Park Center on Wednesday, closing the regular season with an 8-9 record. Trei Driskell was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and single, knocking in three RBI’s. Dalton McNamara was 4-for-5 with a triple, Zach Streit 3-for-4 (three runs) and Casey Lieser 3-for-5 (two runs). Alex Phillips pitched six innings and Streit fi nished the combined six-hit shutout. Section 5AAAA is currently under way.

Cougar girls lacrosse (9-2) loses to Crimson

Maple Grove topped Centennial 11-7 in a duel of two of the leading Northwest Suburban Conference teams on Tuesday. Jersey Beranek pumped in four goals for the Crimson. Hailee Berg notched two goals for Centennial and Hannah Backman, Elizabeth Jensen, Madeline Johnson, Anneke Linser and Marissa Waldoch had one each. Justine Case stopped 13 of 24 shots. CIRCLE PINES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Circle Pines City Council took the following action at its May 22 meeting: • Heard from Councilman Dean Goldberg, who informed the council he received a letter from a citizen complaining about dogs violating provisions in the city code. Goldberg suggested adding additional language about those regulations to a future community newsletter.

• Mayor Dave Bartholomay thanked the council and community for the support he has received after the passing of his father.

He also noted that the Utilities Commission approved annual changes/updates to its manual at its last meeting.

• Heard from

Councilwoman Jennifer Rauner, who reported the Cable Commission met on May 16 and accepted its audit, which she said went well.

• Goldberg announced the Police Governing Board met on May 22 and recognized many officers during an awards ceremony, which included the swearing-in of a new officer, presentation of multiple lifesaving awards and recognition of a 20year employee.

• Heard from Councilman Matt Percy, who noted that the Anoka County – Blaine Airport Advisory Commission met on May 9 and reviewed noise complaints, which are up from last year.

Percy said much of the spike in complaints was due to the high

volumes of traffic in February from the Super Bowl.

Percy explained the airport is planning to move its run-up areas (where pilots can go through their preflight checks without being on the runway) more to the center of the property to prevent noise disturbances to neighbors close by.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included May 8 meeting minutes, general fund, police and fi re disbursements, licenses and a resolution regarding the decision of Liu Therapeutic Massage’s business license hearing on May 7.

The council decided to reinstate the business’ license with a few stipulations which include: no alcohol

on the premises, customers cannot have food during a massage and there is a two-hour time limit for massages.

The business was also fi ned $1,500 for violating city code.

• Approved a request for a time extension to complete the 2040 Comprehensive Plan update. Under state statute, cities are required to update their Comprehensive Plans every 10 years.

Minnesota Statutes section 473.864, subdivision 2, authorizes the Metropolitan Council to grant extensions to local governments that require additional time to complete their review obligations and make necessary amendments to their comprehensive plans. Local units of government must

request an extension

by May 31.

City Administrator Patrick Antonen explained city staff and its consultants need additional time to complete various components of the plan and to allow for the required six-month review from neighboring communities.

• Approved a purchase agreement between the city of Circle Pines and Anoka County on behalf of the Anoka County Library. The City Council approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Anoka County at its March 13 meeting regarding 10 square feet of city property, which will be sold to the county.

The county needs to acquire the property as the current library expansion plans would

extend the library onto city property.

Antonen explained the agreement fi nalizes the process that was set forth from the memorandum of understanding (MOU).

• Accepted a donation of property from John and Eleanor Yackel.

The Yackels donated three lots located on the southwest side of City Hall. John approached the city about the donation and said he has owned the lots for many years and his family no longer has a use for them, noting that the citizens of Circle Pines could benefit from the donation.

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at City Hall.

Anoka County summer library experience begins in June Anoka County Library’s summer library experience, “Summer at Your Library,” is a celebration of summer reading and learning. Whether it’s an eBook, audiobook or paper copy, the library has plenty of options for kids to read from June 1 to Aug. 18.

“Anoka County Libraries are vibrant places serving diverse patrons,” said Library Director Maggie Snow. “Our summer library programming reflects this diversity, offering children and teens opportunities to learn, grow and explore throughout the summer.”

Anoka County Library has more than 100 programs for kids of all ages and interests to inspire reading and learning in the summer. It’s not just about summer reading; the library offers a wide variety of summer activities for youth and families.

Explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with fun hands-on projects using all sorts of gadgets. Teen volunteers run these fun and

informational programs for younger children.

Families can come see engaging musical shows featuring Jack & Kitty or The Jolly Pops. CENTERVILLE — The landscaping business is all Pat Ready has ever known.

Ready, who resides in Columbus, has been the president of Ready Landscaping Inc. since 1995. The business relocated from Vadnais Heights to Centerville in spring 2017.

While attending White Bear Lake High School, Ready worked for his neighbor, who owned a landscaping company.

When his neighbor wanted to sell him the business, he wasn’t quite ready to take it over yet, as he was still so young. After working for the new owner for a few more years, he decided he was then ready to start his own business.

The company began as primarily a hardscape installer, but has since evolved over the years to a full-service lawn and landscape business. “We pretty much do everything outside,” he said. “After about five to 10 years,we transitioned to a full-service company to be able to better serve our customer’s needs.”

Today, Ready Landscaping specializes in hardscapes including patios, retaining walls, driveways and walkways and decorative cement

work in addition to lawn care and snow removal.

“We have always catered to the fact that you can call us and anything you need done, we can do it,” Ready said. “I’ve never been afraid to tackle something. We specialize in high-end, very detailed and tricky projects that a lot of other companies won’t touch.”

Another thing that sets his company apart, Ready said, is that he answers the phone. “The number one complaint I hear from almost every customer is they have called many places and no one will pick up the phone,” he said. “I always try to pick up my phone and if I can’t, I will call them right back.”

Ready enjoys the diversity of the industry.

“Every job is different and every day is different. I don’t like routine,” he said. “You can put in the same patio or paver product, use the same materials, the same everything and every job, every location is going to be different.”

PICKLEBALL: Fire chief steps up as sport heats up in Quad area FROM PAGE 1

Pritchard, a former congressman from Washington State, and Bill Bell. The two were looking for a game their families could play together, and noted the presence of an old badminton court nearby.

Since they couldn’t find any badminton equipment, they improvised.

“It is kind of a combination of tennis, badminton and ping pong,” Lundstrom explained. “It is a pretty easy game to pick up.”

The sport is easy to learn and set up, inexpensive to play and provides good exercise. Lundstrom said one of the main draws is its social nature.

Although the sport can be played in singles, many participants choose to play doubles, and leagues are popular.

Pickleball differs from tennis in that the ball is much lighter, so it travels a lot slower. The rackets are also different and vary in weight; a lighter paddle is easier to play with but doesn’t generate as much power as a heavier paddle.

In addition, because of the lighter ball, the sport doesn’t require as much running and is easier on the body, which may be one of the reasons the older population has gravitated toward it.

Stillwater resident Gail Wires read about the free lessons in the CCE booklet she still receives after she enrolled in golf a couple years ago. “I saw this, and I have wondered about pickleball for a while. I don’t really know much about it, so this was a good opportunity to try it,” she said. “Being the age that I am, I have heard a lot of people talk about it.”

Her friend Judy LeMay, a Shoreview resident, also decided to attend. “She called me up and asked if I wanted to do pickleball and I said ‘sure, I will do anything once,’” she said. “I am turning 65, so I need a sport for my old age. It is something new and it seems to be popular among our age group, so it is probably good for meeting new people and socializing.”

Lino Lakes resident Robbin Leach heard about the lessons from her family, many of whom also attended the lesson. Although her family is not familiar with the sport, they hope to form a family league in Forest Lake this summer with nine participants.

The next free lessons will be from 2-3 p.m.

LEXINGTON CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lexington City Council took the following action at its May 17 meeting: • Viewed a presentation of the city’s draft 2040 Comprehensive Plan given by Chris Jansen, community development specialist at MSA Professional Services. The Comprehensive Plan provides Lexington with a guideline for its development and growth over the next 10 years. In the words of Jansen, the plan is a “document designed to guide the future actions of a community.”

When describing the plan, Jansen praised the decisions of the City Council, noting that Lexington was “kicking butt” in terms of growth and economic development.

The Comprehensive Plan presented was developed with the help of Councilman John Hughes and the Planning and Zoning Commission. It can be found in its entirety on the city of Lexington’s website, in the Planning and Zoning Commission section.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included several claims and bills, as well as financial reports of cash balances.

• Approved a resolution adopting Mayor Mark Kurth’s proposal for a Lexington firefighters fitness plan. The plan reimburses Lexington firefighters for gym and fitness center fees up to $30 per month.

In the time since the proposal’s introduction at the previous council meeting, Kurth said he did his research.

“In my eyes, the law requires the city to mandate the training and fitness of its firefighters,” he said.

Kurth’s implemented plan follows the example of some 33 other fire stations, all of which have similar policies to encourage their firefighters to stay in good physical shape. The monthly payment is not a payout, and it comes with the stipulation that the firefighters use their respective fitness facilities regularly.

• Approved a revised development agreement with 89 Lexington LLC – Ephesians Apartment Complex. The original development agreement was approved by the council on Dec. 21, 2017.

City Administrator Bill Petracek explained the project is being completed in three phases, and the city is currently in the second phase. A number

of documents have already been approved for the development including: planned unit development conditional use permit, rezoning, (Phase 1) development agreement, easement vacation, preliminary plat and final plat.

• Approved a new business license for Fit Recovery, to be located near the Subway in Lexington. Petracek said the business is currently in the process of negotiating with the property owner.

The business specializes in cryotherapy services, which places participants in a small, walk-in chamber cooled by nitrogen. The chamber is brought to an extremely low, but reportedly safe, temperature. The low temperatures induce the body to enter a kind of hibernation state. In this state, the body is encouraged to rest and heal. According to the owner Keith Moeller, the process is said to help with chronic pain, sports injuries and disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

• Approved a Minnesota lawful gambling premises permit application for Centennial Youth Hockey Association

at Carbone’s Pizzeria.

The permit allows the association to conduct its monthly gambling and board meetings.

In other business the council: • Following the regular meeting, the City Council held a workshop and discussion on the following topics: – A lease agreement with American Tower, as pertaining to an antenna tower site located in Memorial Park. The tower has been in use since 1992, but the City Council had some misgivings as to whether it would last much longer.

The tower brings a significant amount of income ($50,000 per year, for the lease of three antennas) and it is likely that it will be renewed, because American Tower is

interested. Concerns were introduced in regards to the development of the 5G network, which could see company antennas placed on sites as common as city light poles.

– Potential upgrades for the Lexington Fire Station. A renovation of the inside is expected to cost around $100,000, but the City Council hopes to expand what is currently described as a very cramped building.

Though much time was given to discussion of this item, the council ultimately elected to have the firefighters internally discuss their options and return to the council with their own suggestions.

for the development of a new business.

The current manager told the City Council that he had more space than he needed, and that some 1,500 to 2,000 square feet could be used for a new business.

The City Council is currently considering the option, and it may be that this new property will be on the market within the next few months.

The next City Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at City Hall.

“I was just sitting here one day and started thinking about how I went to school all those years. I decided to write to the U to see my transcript and what credits I had and see if I earned anything,” Hassel said. “They called me back within a matter of three or four days and told me I had plenty of credits for an associate’s degree, but they would have to bring it to the department and get it approved by faculty.”

When all is said and done, it took about a month for Hassell to receive his Associate of Arts, 63 years after he earned the credits.

“I was surprised how quickly

it took place. I was really amazed. I have always had a lot of respect for the U, but I have more respect for them now,” he said. “They have probably helped a lot of other people like me.”

The degree is even more special, as his late wife, Donna, who passed away around six months ago, would have been proud of his accomplishment.

Donna worked for the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities as the secretary to the dean in the School of Nursing.

The two were married June 14, 1958, and have five children.

Hassel describes himself as “a huge Gopher fan” who still follows all Gopher sports. For many years he and his wife held season tickets and would travel to Iowa and Wisconsin

to see Gopher games. His closet still contains quite a few Gopher shirts.

Hassel’s daughter, Sue Sheppard, was inspired by her father’s accomplishment to reach out to the university to see if she too has enough credits for a degree. Sheppard attended the U for three years before she transferred to Dakota County Technical College for interior design and architecture.

Sheppard said Hassel’s children plan to hold a graduation party for their father in the near future.

POLICE REPORTS The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer stopped a vehicle for a seatbelt violation in the 8800 block of Naples Street in Lexington May 17. The driver had a BB gun in plain view and was removed from the vehicle at gunpoint. The driver was cited for numerous violations and the vehicle was towed.

• Police responded to the 7000 block of 20th Avenue in Centerville May 18 on a hit-and-run property damage accident. An adult female was cited for the violation and a citation was mailed to her home.

How the poppy came to symbolize Memorial Day

The poppy flower has come to symbolize the remembrance of fallen military members.

In World War I, soldiers engaged in brutal trench warfare even in the most beautiful places—including Flanders, Belgium. The violence at that site inspired one of the most famous wartime poems in history: “In Flanders Fields,” by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.

After he signed up with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he eventually found himself in the Second Battle of Ypres in the Flanders region of Belgium. German soldiers bombarded the troops with chlorine gas, and McCrae lost a close friend whom he later had to bury. He noticed how quickly the poppies grew around the graves of fallen soldiers in that region and penned his poem soon afterward.

The poppy has now become a worldwide symbol of remembrance, and the U.S. celebrates National Poppy Day on May 25. The American Legion

adopted the poppy as its official fl ower to memorialize soldiers who fought and died during the war in 1920. Everyone knows the classic tale of “Cinderella” — boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after. Thirty-eight students at Centennial High School (CHS) are working their magic to put a new twist on the production to keep the audience entertained.

“I don’t want to giveaway any secrets, but there are new characters who are more fully developed and new storylines,” said

Theater Director Mark Quinlan.

“People will think they know it (the story), and then they will come and be surprised.”

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” is the new Broadway adaptation of the classic musical. The contemporary take on the classic tale features Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/ It’s Possible” and “Ten Minutes Ago.” The show also has humor and many surprising twists along

Cub Scout Pack 432 in Centerville had an action-packed year filled with camping, service projects, community events and much more.

As the school year was winding down last year, Pack 432 participated in a drone event at Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Basecamp and the Pack rocket launch at Tripoli Rocketry Club. Over the summer, the Pack participated in many events including Kiwanis Summer Camp and assisted with cleanup at the Church of St. Genevieve’s Chicken Dinner. The boys also walked in the Fete des Lacs parade, assisted with a variety of Fete des Lacs events and ran the SAFE Archery Booth at Fete des Lacs.

Last September, Pack 432 participated in fall family camp at Kiwanis, a Pack hike at William O’Brien State Park, enjoyed a day of trains at Jackson Street Roundhouse and a community service day packing food baskets with the Centennial Community Food Shelf.

Over the winter the fun continued.

The Pack participated in Polar Cubs winter camp in January. The Scouts had a day of snow tubing and sledding, LEGO car racing, broomball, winter animal study, hot chocolate by the campfire, winter survival games and tomahawk throwing. The Pack also participated in the Centerville Lions fundraiser by fishing and helping with subsequent trash cleanup.

As spring approached, the Scouts were eagerly building their Pinewood Derby cars. The Pinewood Derby was soon followed by a camporee and camping with other Cub Scout and Boy Scout units at Fred C. Anderson Camp. There, they participated in team-building games and learned skills such as Dutch oven cooking, fire building and rope-making.

As we move into another year, exciting changes are coming to our Pack. In 2017, the (BSA) announced the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will welcome girls into their programs starting in 2018. While each Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop can choose to be co-ed or remain all boys, Cub Scout Pack 432 is embracing family Scouting. The Pack will welcome girls this summer and is excited about offering the same opportunity to girls in the community.
