Teacher of the Year follows in father’s footsteps BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

After an extensive vetting process of 39 teachers nominated by 53 community members, the 2017-18 Centennial Teacher of the Year was officially selected Wednesday, May 10 in a surprise ceremony. This year's pick is Colleen Salay, a kindergarten teacher at Golden Lake Elementary. “Colleen Salay signifies a distinguished and lifelong commitment to Centennial Schools. She attended Centennial Schools as a child and now teaches in the very building where her educational journey began,” said Golden Lake Principal Christopher Gerst. “Colleen builds highly impactful relationships with

her students and families. Her diligence, dedication and sensitivity have helped countless students and families. She has held a variety of leadership roles and assists in leading efforts among alumni. We are proud of Colleen and hold her in high regard.” During the surprise ceremony Salay told her fellow staff, “I couldn't do this without all of you. This is for everybody, students, parents, community members, everybody who helps us do what we do every day.” Salay, a 1985 Centennial Grad, was raised in Circle Pines and was a student in the very classroom she now teaches in. “This community is near and dear to my heart,” she said. LINO LAKES –– A City Council member received a lot of media attention last week after posting a comment on Congressman Tom Emmer's Facebook page. She is now publicly apologizing to both Emmer and his staff as well as residents. Melissa Maher posted the comment on Emmer's page in the early morning hours of May 9 in response to a photo of Emmer visiting a farm in Cokato, Minnesota. The comment read, "If I were you Emmer, I'd avoid people who have a lot of deadly objects at hand. Selling us all out was not a good plan for your future. You're a coward and a party whore." “We, myself and our press secretary, do go through all of the comments on social media, both Facebook and Twitter, similar to emails and phone calls,” said Emmer's Communications Director Becky Alery. “Every once in a while we do get one of a threatening nature that we are required to let Capitol Police know about.” So far this year, Emmer's staff members have reported five other incidents to Capitol Police. After reporting this incident, Emmer's staff became aware that Maher was a city council member, which Alery said was “especially concerning.” “It is definitely a very heated political climate these days and so we get a lot of people that disagree with us and that is absolutely great. That is why this country is the way it SEE COUNCILWOMAN, PAGE 12
