Council discusses future of public works site BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES –– Remodeling, doing a complete rebuild and moving locations were some of the options discussed for the future of the public works site at the City Council’s work session May 1. The existing public works facility is located at 1189 Main St. The topic was fi rst brought up at the Dec. 5, 2016 work session. Council approved a public works space needs analysis and existing facility audit to be conducted by CNH Architects Inc. at its regular meeting Dec. 12, 2016. Principal architect Quinn Hutson and architectural designer Jessica Johnson presented the fi ndings to the council. The current facility was built in 1971. The analysis found the building has several problem areas with water leakage and damage. In addition, vehicles and equipment are largely stored outdoors, there are accessibility deficiencies, it doesn't meet energy code requirements, the ventilation system is inadequate, the exhaust system in the vehicle maintenance area is not up to code and the gas-fi red infrared heaters are dated. Hutson and Johnson explained three preliminary layout options for the future of the public works site in two locations. Site A, where the existing public works facility is located, has about 8 acres of buildable area spread throughout the site. It currently does not have municipal sanitary sewer or water service and includes a large floodplain and a significant amount of wetlands. Site B is adjacent to Fire Station 2 on the south side of Birch Street, and has around 3 acres of buildable area in one spot. Wetlands have already been designated on the property and water and sanitary sewer pipes have already been stubbed into the site. When determining space needs, CNH Architects wanted to make sure there was enough space for vehicles and equipment to be stored within the proposed building (built in two phases), which would allow SEE PUBLIC WORKS, PAGE 11
