Golden Lake students take learning outside BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
CIRCLE PINES — As the sun shines, wildlife returns and temperatures warm up, there couldn't be a more perfect time for students to bring their learning outside of the classroom's four walls. Since 2016, Golden Lake Elementary in Circle Pines has used its outdoor classroom all year long in a variety of ways. Recently, second-grade students took an adventure on the Oregon Trail. In a lesson that implements
design, engineering, science and history, students made rafts out of things they could find in the woods using a little bit of masking tape. The challenge was to construct a raft that would hold 25 pennies — even 50. Principal Christopher Gerst explained that the idea for an outdoor classroom originally came out of a conversation he had with a parent who was a carpenter. “It started with a piece of paper, with me and a dad thinking about how we could do this, and we drew up some things,” he recalled.
In fall of 2016 the school held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony and revealed the space to students. Home Depot donated the materials and labor for the initial structure and, since then, numerous community partnerships have added amenities to the classroom. “The purpose is to provide an experience for our students who otherwise have not had experiences like this,” Gerst explained. “Minnesota offers so many unbelievable opportunities SEE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM, PAGE 14
