LINO LAKES — The Lino Lakes Public Safety Department made 184 DWI arrests last year. In an effort to improve the safety of local roads, the department hopes to roll out a new Safe Ride Home program by May 1. “We do enforcement very well and do a lot of education, but we were looking for a way to acknowledge that some people fi nd themselves in a situation where they feel their only decision is a bad decision, and that is after they have been drinking, (when) they still drive because they don't have a way home,” said Director of Public Safety John Swenson. The department began doing research online and stumbled across Drink & Drive Intelligently (DDI). The company was started in 2005 by Brian Peters along with his friends Carl Blaske, Justin Leary and Bob Janisch. DDI, based out of Little Canada, offers its customers a ride home for not only their customer, but their customer's car. “One of the major reasons a person feels the need to drink and drive is to get their car home,” Peters said. The program will be available to customers who are using one of the 11 onsale liquor establishments in Lino Lakes. On Monday, April 16, the police department invited staff from those establishments to an informational meeting to learn more about the program and provide feedback. “This program is promoting safety on our roadways. The three legs of trying to make our roads safer are education, prevention and enforcement,” Swenson said. “In an ideal world, we would never have to make another DWI arrest because there are no

New owners put some love into Carbone's BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

LEXINGTON — A duo, who together have 40 years of experience in the restaurant business, have taken over the Carbone's in Lexington. Co-owners Michael Slater, of Savage, and John Enzler, of Golden Valley,

officially closed on the sale last month and are excited to be a part of the Quad and surrounding communities. “It is a unique opportunity to be a part of the community out here. It is different in the (Twin) Cities, where there are 400 restaurants per square mile,” Slater explained. “I've been working on

the floor the past couple of weeks and I've seen so many new faces. Half of the staff knows these people by name.” Slater and Enzler grew up together in southwest Minneapolis and went to the same high school. “It has kind of been a lifelong dream of ours for the last 30 years to run our own

restaurant,” Enzler said. So when the Carbone's hit the market, the two jumped right in. Slater and Enzler worked together as general managers of the Ruby Tuesday chain of restaurants for 15 years.
