Casino Night raises funds for youth BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
Community members will fill the new space at Infinite Campus in Blaine to bid on silent auction items, play Blackjack, Texas Hold'em, Beat-the-House and to socialize all for a good cause—supporting community youth. The Chain of Lakes Rotary Club will host its 6th annual Chain of Giving event from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at Infinite Campus, 4321 109th Ave. NE, Blaine. “The Chain of Giving event started in 2012, not long after the club was getting organized. The club was looking for a way to engage the community in giving back and supporting causes that impact where we live,” said Rotary Chair Brian Merkel. Over the years the event has supported many causes, such as a new K-9 for the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department, Camp Heritage and the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network. This year's event will raise funds for two causes: Centennial School District's Angel Fund and YMCA scholarships. Superintendent Brian Dietz established a similar type of fund while he worked in the Waseca School District, and helped implement the idea for Centennial in 2013 along with Community Education Director Cori Sendle. The fund gives all students in middle school and high school an opportunity to participate in activities and sports offered through the schools and community education. Families in need can apply for scholarships to help pay for participation fees, equipment and other expenses a student may incur.
CFD recognizes firefighters for accomplishments in 2016 BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
Last year was a busy year for the Centennial Fire District (CFD). In 2016 the district responded to 416 calls, attended 54 training sessions (4,200 hours), conducted 146 inspections and participated in 42 public education events (over 7,000 hours). In addition, CFD purchased new European-style helmets for its fi refighters, a 2017 E1 topmount commercial pumper and a used 2002 Quint American La France pumper. The department also bought back its very fi rst
fi re truck — a 1929 Ford Model A — from former Chief Jerry Streich. As a department, CFD reflected on 2016 and recognize its fi refighters for their accomplishments in an annual awards ceremony held Saturday, April 1 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Circle Pines. Training Chief and EMS Program Director Kathy Peil explained that CFD fi refighters put in about 400 training hours every year. In addition, many of them choose to complete more hours (100-200 hours) for SEE CFD AWARDS, PAGE 9

Spring garden tips and trends
“It is proven students that participate in co-curricular activities are more likely to have better grades, better attendance and overall a healthier outlook day to day.” Brian Hegseth Activities Director “We want as many students as possible to take part in what we offer, and not let the costs associated with participation deter them from trying out or joining a team, club or activity,” he said. So far this year 11 scholarships have been given to families, or around $800. SEE CASINO NIGHT , PAGE 10
