Legislation introduced as ‘push back’ on court ruling ST. PAUL — Two area legislators hope to circumvent the court order that restricts water use within five miles of White Bear Lake.

Sen. Roger Chamberlain (R-Dist.

38) introduced a bill March 19 and Rep. Linda Runbeck (R-Dist. 38A), a House companion version, that would temporarily prohibit the DNR from modifying municipal water permits, as ordered by (retired) District Court Judge Margaret Marrinan.

“Citizens impacted by the court ruling have no recourse and they are not represented,” Chamberlain said.

“The judge’s ruling, in my opinion, is unconstitutional and an overreach. It is lacking in judiciary restraint.”

The senator contends the ruling makes the groundwater situation worse and prevents municipalities from taking steps to improve the situation.

Hugo City Administrator Bryan Bear agreed, noting the court has set policy, something the legislative branch of government does.

“Further, the policy and regulation ordered by the court is ill advised and will fail to accomplish whatever was intended,” he said. “Hopefully

the bills will allow for this to be corrected through a normal process.”

CENTERVILLE — Curt McKay uses Twitter solely as a news feed to keep up with local sports happenings. He never imagined his third retweet on the social media platform would result in a $10,000 cash award.

After the NCAA men’s basketball brackets came out March 12, the Saint Paul Saints came up with Curt McKay the promotional idea to give away $10,000 if a No. 16 seed knocked off a No. 1 seed, something that had never been done before in 132 tries entering the 2018 tournament.

The Saints sent out a tweet Monday morning (March 13): “We don’t have a billion dollars like @WarrenBuffett, but our GM @DerekSharrer has officially gone mad. The Saints will give away $10,000 if a 16 seed beats a 1 seed in #MarchMadness2018. All you have to do is retweet this to enter & we’ll choose one winner if it happens.”

The retweets poured in, and by the time the tournament began, there were 6,000 retweets.

Students put on Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious show

Around 65 students at Centennial Middle School (CMS) are busy practicing their singing, choregoraphy and magic for the school’s spring musical April 4-7.

“This is one of the biggest groups we have ever had. and we have so many people who can sing,” said co-director Laurie Tangren. “It is crazy how talented this group is. I could have had 10 leads because they are that good.

This is one of my top three favorite shows for sure.”

For this year’s musical, Tangren selected “Mary Poppins Jr,” which is based off of the popular Disney movie and the Broadway musical that played for over 2,500 performances and received multiple Olivier and Tony Award

really amazing job of making scripts work for middle school voices.

They take out pretty much everything that is inappropriate,” Tangren explained. “We have done almost every one of their shows.

Every year I look to see which ones we haven’t done. I saw this one, and I thought it would be a fun one to do.”

Tangren said she was surprised with how excited all of the students were for the show because it is such an old musical.

This year’s show has a different feel from others, as Tangren has a new team helping her with the production, many of whom are professional actors. Co-Director Eric Webster, Set Director Dave Mundale, Choreographer Pogi Sumangil and Music Director Mary Rudquist.

“Mary Poppins Jr.” also brings an element of magic. Students are refi ning their stage magic so Mary Poppins

can pull large items out of her “never ending” bag and Bert can hand a flower out of a painting to Mary.

The show will feature authentic period costumes, rented from Norcostco, a costume rental company in Golden Valley.

This will be seventhgrader Braeden Krieger’s fourth show at CMS. This time, he plays Bert.

“He looks at the bright side of life and he is always happy.

He has many jobs, and he is always bouncing around,” he said. “I love how energetic he is. You can really do a lot with his character and get into it.”

Krieger said he really enjoys acting and singing. “You don’t have people judging you. You can

be yourself and do what you love to do in front of people who are doing the same thing.”

He said the show is very similar to the movie, and he really enjoys all of the large musical numbers.

Eighth-grader Nathan Tomas has been in every show during his middle school career. He is really enjoying his role as the chairman in charge of the bank. “It is fun to be the exact opposite of everyone around you,” Tomas said. “He is a stern sort of guy. He is extremely serious, but I think I’ll make him break the seriousness every once in a while.”

Tomas added, “I enjoy being somebody I am not. You get to interpret the character and put your own spin on them.”

This is eighth-grader Olivia Lundberg’s fi rst musical at CMS. Despite it being her fi rst musical, her talent scored her the lead role as Mary Poppins.

“She has an amazing voice, especially for a middle school student.

She is perfect for Mary Poppins,” Tangren said.

CURT MCKAY: Saints fan wins NCAA hoops tournament prize FROM PAGE 1

Centerville resident Curt (@CurtCmckay22), his wife Rhonda and his two daughters, Megan and Matraca, couldn’t believe the news. As Curt was watching the game Friday night, he thought to himself “Someone just won $10,000!” but he had no idea that person would be himself.

Last Tuesday, the Saints announced the winner live on Facebook. “I was sitting on the couch and all of a sudden my phone started blowing up,” Curt recalled. “I went to the Facebook live feed and sure enough, there was my Twitter handle, but I still didn’t believe it. I didn’t believe it until I got an email and phone call from the Saints.”

Curt called his wife to relay the good news right away and she said, “Are you sure?” and Curt said, “I think so.”

Originally from St. Paul, Curt grew up going to Saints games at Midway Stadium. Today, he and his family try to make it to five games a year. Curt enjoys following all Minnesota sports, especially his alma mater, the University of Minnesota Gophers.

The $10,000 couldn’t come at a better time, as Curt was laid off in February after a 17-year career in environmental consulting with the Antea Group in Shoreview. In addition, his youngest daughter Matraca is tying the knot this July. Curt said he also hopes to do some small home renovation projects, including new floors, for their Centerville home.

Since the official announcement last Tuesday,

Curt has received an abundance of congratulations from family, friends and strangers in addition to some criticism. Some Twitter users, who also retweeted the Saints tweet, were angry that someone who doesn’t tweet could win the contest.

The Saints will open the 2018 season on the road against the Gary SouthShore Railcats on May 18. The home opener will be May 21 against the Chicago Dogs.

Sean Aronson, director of media relations/ broadcasting for the Saints, said Curt “will get his money soon” and there will likely be a formal check presentation at a home game in May, possibly Dog Day on May 26.

Credit where credit is due

I

In my fi rst year of college in St. Paul, I spent many hours riding the bike I’d brought to campus. It was invaluable whenever classwork became overwhelming, or I was tired of the cramped spaces in my dorm. One night I left it chained to the rack outside, and woke up in the morning to fi nd it had been stolen.

Anyone who has had anything physically stolen from them knows the outrage and disappointment that goes along with a theft. In today’s Information Age, that extends to a theft of property that is even more difficult to protect.

Written and visual media—both in print and online—are protected by copyright law. Whether its a written article or a photo you took, in most cases you are automatically the owner. But if you post it online, Getting that often will not stop someone in Tune from taking and using your work giving credit.

Jackie Bussjaeger without In the newsroom, we do our best to give credit for every form of media we use. We want it to be clear who and where our information comes from. This extends from the interviews in our articles to the photographers who send us snapshots for our Spotted section.

Copyright protection is the reason all of the articles written by our reporters are completely original. We recently had a conversation in the newsroom about how this can be confusing. Sometimes sources send us articles that have been previously written about their business or initiative, asking if we can reprint it. The idea makes sense, since it would save a lot of time. But the answer is: we can’t, because it would be a violation of copyright law.

You might notice that the Pioneer Press occasionally prints the exact same story from the front page of the New York Times. The Pioneer Press, along with hundreds of newspapers across our country, are members of the Associated Press (AP), which means they can share articles. This partnership allows small papers to get easy access to national and international news topics, and allows large papers to scoop up viral stories born in Hometown U.S.A. Press Publications is not a member of AP, which has pros and cons. We have to produce most of our own original stories by doing the legwork ourselves, which means a little more work for us. This is beneficial to communities because it offers an alternative perspective to news sources that might reuse the same story across multiple publications.

If we do publish something that we didn’t create ourselves, it’s probably a press release. Organizations that send out press releases often send them to multiple news sources to get the word out.

Sometimes you’ll see the same press release in two completely unrelated newspapers, but we always indicate when we are using one.

Original content is our specialty, and provides a valuable resource in an era when news aggregators are becoming bigger and bigger conglomerates—or during the rise in independent bloggers who don’t adequately cite their sources. We want you to know where your information is coming from, and we encourage you to become a subscriber. We love our communities and appreciate all of your support.

I have to tell the end of my bike story, because it’s sort of funny. The weekend after my bike was stolen, my college held a bike maintenance workshop and raffle. The grand prize was a new bike. I figured it was worth a shot, so I bought a raffle ticket. A few days later, I learned I’d won a prize. I was overjoyed—until I went to pick it up. It turned out to be the second-place prize: a brand new heavy-duty U-lock.

It was an insulting turn of irony, but pretty amusing in retrospect. I’ve almost gotten over it by now.

Partnership for business attraction and retention

his past year Anoka County, working with the Metro North Chamber of Commerce, Connexus Energy and cities embarked on a collaborative effort to identify how we could become more competitive in not only attracting businesses and jobs to Anoka County, but retaining and growing the businesses that are here.

Allowing people to have the opportunity to work near their home not only allows them to have a better quality of life because they have more time to spend doing the things they enjoy rather than being stuck in traffic, but also reduces traffic on the roadways.

In Anoka County 121,630 people who live in the county, commute outside of the county for work.

Only 51,025 live in the county and work within the county.

Anoka County, along with Connexus Energy and Metro North Chamber of Commerce, commissioned a nationally recognized

fi rm to conduct an economic development study. After conducting research, site visits and stakeholder interviews, they developed a strategy along with an implementation plan.

The study was important, as we needed to have an accurate assessment of our strengths and identify our challenges and opportunities.

The report showed that among employers, developers and other stakeholders, the perception of Anoka County is generally positive. We are credited for our convenient access to Minneapolis/St. Paul; rural/suburban lifestyle; low crime and poverty levels; lower-priced land and housing compared to other areas of the Twin Cities; award-winning public schools and excellent community college and technical college; quality parks and recreational opportunities; low taxes; reliable, affordable electricity and utilities; regional airport; a solid manufacturing core and a strong work ethic.

There are also some negative perceptions about Anoka County that we need to address. Some of our key stakeholders view Anoka County as being way up north — extremely rural and remote.

Others hold the impression that Anoka County communities are primarily blue-collar and that we lack a comprehensive transportation network and other desirable services and amenities.

well with Anoka County’s resources are light and heavy manufacturing, medical device, injection molding, recreational products (such as kayaks), high precision manufacturing for the aerospace industry, data centers in parts of the county with fiber access, back office, medical services and call centers.

By identifying those industries that best align with our assets, we are able to target site selectors and work to ensure we are ready for development, with a trained talent pool and an up-to-date inventory of available land and buildings.

We aim to counter any negative perception of Anoka County among employers, developers, potential workers and other stakeholders by aggressively marketing our assets and promoting a consistent, countywide economic development brand.

In addition, we are working to clearly define roles within the county and with regional partners, relating to marketing, incentives and business retention and expansion.

And last but not least, we recognize how important it is for each city to develop its own economic development plan and determine what type of business and industry they want to pursue if any.

These efforts will take time but I am confident will pay dividends.

LEGISLATIVE BRIEF Senator votes for MNLARS funding

Sen. Roger Chamberlain (R-Lino Lakes) voted for a bill to get Minnesota’s failed vehicle licensing and registration system (MNLARS) back on track. The bill (Senate fi le 3133) appropriates $9.65 million for MNLARS technical staff and technical repairs using an existing special revenue fund.

No new general funding spending will be used for the repairs.

The bill includes strict oversight measures, including a quarterly report from the Office of the Legislative Auditor and a mechanism for the Legislature to shut off all funding if development benchmarks are not met. The bill also includes the creation of a MNLARS Steering Committee responsible for legislative oversight.

MNLARS was rolled out July 2017.

The Anoka County Historical Society (ACHS) will soon update its “Farms to Flamingos� exhibit on the story of suburbanization in Anoka County. Saying goodbye to its suburban living room, ACHS wants to install a suburban garage. In order to do this, ACHS needs artifacts from a 1950s-1960s-era garage.

If community members have bicycles, roller skates, tools, pegboard, chicken wire, gardening implements, hoses, basketball hoop/ball, lawn games, wading pool, etc., ACHS would love to have them. The Rice Creek Tail Association was founded in 1983 by local snowmobile enthusiasts who wanted to establish snowmobile trails in compliance with the DNR standards for safe enjoyable riding from Ham Lake to Columbus, Forest Lake, Lino Lakes, Centerville, Hugo and Scandia.

In Minnesota there are over 21,000 miles of DNR snowmobile trails established and maintained by over 200 volunteer clubs. The Rice Creek Trail Association is responsible for 72 miles of snowmobile trails sponsored by Anoka County Parks through the Minnesota DNR. Trail maintenance and upkeep is always a priority and requires many volunteer hours and dollars to provide safe trails. As with many volunteer organizations, our club is looking for members.

Questions About Animals and the Afterlife,â€? features a filmed interview with Dr. Kathleen Cooney, a veterinarian and founder of Home to Heaven, an in-home pet euthanasia service.

During the session, participants will discuss the times they’ve had to face the death of a beloved pet.

Miss Inside and Miss Outside: Four years together for talented Cougar sibs

As basketball players, they don’t appear to be even related, much less sisters.

Sydney Stapleton is a versatile 5-10 guard who roams the court and fills the stat sheet. Sara Stapleton is a powerful 6-3 post who rules the lanes.

Other than that, these Centennial teammates are as close as you’d expect from two sisters one year apart, with no other siblings, who share one abiding passion.

And there’s one key benefit from playing separate positions.

“In all the years we played together, we never competed (with each other) for playing time, due to the differences,” Sydney reflected, grateful for that. About those differences, she summarized: “Sara is five inches taller than me, but I am quicker.”

Both are good enough to have landed Division I scholarships and coach Jill Becken was glad to have both diverse skill sets on her team.

“Sydney has a very nice pullup shot and can shoot the three ball well. Sara really bothers shots in the lane on the defensive end. She has a nice mid-range shot and also finishes well at the rim. They are both wonderful girls to have on our squad.”

The Stapleton’s were key cogs on a deep, talented team that went 24-4 and earned the No. 3 ranking in Class 4A, although an upset loss kept them out of the state tournament. The Cougars were 81-33 in the four years they both played.

Sydney averaged 9.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals, while Sara averaged 11.8 points, 7.9 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots — relatively modest, but this was playing for a team that shared the ball and routinely had 10

to 15 players scoring.

Sydney finished her career with 1,121 points, 660 rebounds, 259 assists, 204 steals and 160 three-point shots. She will not hold the family scoring record long. Sara will enter her senior year with 981 points along with 660 rebounds and 204 blocked shots.

Sydney has signed with South Dakota State, a small, vibrant Division I program that’s qualified for the NCAA tournament eight times in the last 10 years. Sara has a year left with the Cougars but committed early to Wisconsin, where she’ll be the first CHS graduate to play in the Big Ten. “We did get some of the same college scholarship offers, but we chose different schools,” Sydney said. “We look forward to possibly playing against each other sometime during our college careers.”

(This Cougar team had a total of four players set for Division I teams. Claire Orth, who finished with 909 points, 310 assists and 216 steals, has signed with North Dakota. Taylor McAulay, a junior guard with 824 career points, verbally committed to Drake.

The sisters had their hearts set on the realistic goal of capping their final season together in the state tournament. That didn’t happen. Top-seeded in Section 5AAAA, they lost in overtime to Park Center in the semifinals, a team they beat 87-65 in conference play.

“After winning our conference and getting top seed in sections, we really felt that we were ready to make it all the way,” Sara said. “It made our loss in the semi-final game that much harder. Our team didn’t play up to our normal standards and it didn’t help that Park Center had a good shooting game.”

especially hard, including me,” Sydney said. “Hugs were about all we could do to comfort each other. Words weren’t necessary.

We felt like we were part of a family, and even though our season ended, we didn’t want this team to end.”

The girls did have one state tourney experience together in 2015 when Sydney was a ninthgrade starter and Sara got a few minutes off the bench as an eighth grader. The Cougars beat Wayzata 58-53 for the section championship, with Sydney contributing 14 points, and lost to St. Michael-Albertville 66-53 at state, with Sydney logging nine points. Sara played briefly in each game, didn’t score, but snagged a couple rebounds in the state game.

“I remember the bus ride to the Target Center and the butterflies in my stomach up until the jump ball at the beginning of the game,” recalled Sydney, who was also on the roster for a

state tournament team in eighth grade. “The team this year was really special and I wanted the younger girls to be able to experience it, too.”

They’ve always played on separate AAU summer teams, Sara with Minnesota Stars, Sydney with 43 Hoops and then North Tartan. It would have simpler for their parents to follow one team around the country but Patrick and Jolinda Stapleton encouraged them to pick whichever team benefitted them most.

Grandparents helped out by accompanying one of them when both were traveling.

Asked about special memories, Sara listed going to state together in 2015, and both being named all-conference last year.

Sydney cited a game against Andover last year that was televised locally in which both scored over 20 points to lead a victory and were asked to be interviewed after the game.

“It was Sara’s first time being

interviewed so she was very nervous,” Sydney said. “It didn’t help that a lot of our relatives were taking pictures of us being interviewed! I just remember feeling proud that we both had played good games and beat a strong team.”

With these two just a year apart and no other siblings, they dueled one-on-one frequently at the YMCA and sometimes in practices. How did that go? “I usually win,” Sara responded, “but Sydney will probably say otherwise.” Said Sydney, “Sara has more points down in the post but I was able to make more 3-pointers.”

Looking ahead, Sydney is eager to join the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. She’ll be leaving just after graduation in May for summer workouts with her new teammates, and taking her first classes.

“I’m so excited to start my next chapter playing college basketball. I’m a pretty versatile player and will be happy to fill any role that they need,” she said. “This spring I am doing workouts with a trainer and practicing my shooting.”

Sara will be the Cougar leader next year along with McAuley.

Asked about her team and individual goals for next year, Sara said: “Our players will have to put in a lot of work, but we have the pieces to make a great team next year. My individual goals are to average a double-double and provide the leadership that we are losing with this year’s senior class,” she said.

Sara added, “I think I can speak for the team that our goal for next year will be to go to state. We can hopefully use this year’s loss in sections as a motivation to play our best during sections.”

Municipalities appealing court-ordered changes to water permits 1 by 1

Like the township before it, White Bear Lake is contesting recent changes to its water appropriations permit imposed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

City Council authorized an appeal March 13 objecting to the amendments, which include a ban on residential irrigation, under a state statute that allows such DNR actions to be heard by an administrative law judge.

The amendments, the result of a court order issued Aug. 30, include an enforceable phasedown of per capita residential water use to 75 gallons per day; a requirement to submit a revised water supply plan by Aug. 29 that includes a full or partial conversion from groundwater to surface water, and a ban on residential irrigation if the level of White Bear Lake falls below 923.5 feet. The ban would be lifted if the lake reaches 924 feet. The city is required to enact and enforce the irrigation ban.

“It is the opinion of staff and legal counsel that the amendments are arbitrary and capricious and not supported by substantial evidence,” City Manager Ellen Richter told council.

In a letter to the DNR’s district appropriations hydrologist and Commissioner Tom Landwehr, Mayor Jo Emerson wrote that the city demands a hearing on the amendments to its permit, repeating the opinion that they are arbitrary and capricious.

At least five of the 10 communities affected by the court order (all have wells within a 5-mile radius of White Bear Lake) are either considering or will appeal the DNR amendments at press time. In addition to White Bear Lake, the city of Lino Lakes and White Bear Township have passed a resolution to appeal. Hugo, Vadnais Heights and Lake Elmo have it on council agendas this week. North St. Paul lists the topic on a March 20 workshop agenda. The deadline to appeal is March 30.

Judge grants DNR request for interim stay

District Judge (now retired) Margaret Marrinan has not yet ruled on the DNR’s request for a stay pending appeal on her Aug. 30 order. Motions were heard Jan. 26 and the judge has 90 days to issue her decision. There was news, however, regarding a Feb. 28 request by the DNR to grant a partial temporary stay of enforcement while the court considers the earlier motion.

Marrinan granted the request March 8, noting the plaintiffs take no position on the DNR’s motion for a temporary stay. The judge indicated that the partial, temporary stay shall only remain in effect until the court resolves the DNR’s motion for a stay of the judgment pending appeal.

Richter isn’t sure how the interim stay will affect the DNR’s amendments to city water permits.

“We’re in a holding pattern at this time,” she said. “It’s not clear to us whether, by submitting this appeal, we have to continue with ordinance procedures, but that’s how we’re moving forward until we hear otherwise.”

The case number refers to the lawsuit between the DNR and defending intervenors, White Bear Township and White Bear Lake, and the plaintiff, the White Bear Lake Restoration Association and its intervenor, White Bear Lake Homeowners Association.

Furthermore, the bill states, the commissioner of natural resources may continue to use all authorities granted under Minnesota Statutes, section 103G.287, subdivision 4, to manage groundwater resources within the north and east groundwater management area.

Chamberlain maintains that the arbitrary ban on residential lawn watering is impossible to enforce.

“And it does not impact the heavy water users like golf courses and schools,” he pointed out. “This nonpartisan legislation is an attempt to allow the DNR to follow its regular process to manage groundwater until the lawsuit is finalized. It’s our attempt legislatively to push back.”

Admitting it’s late in the game, Chamberlain said his bill needs a hearing

by March 22 in one of the

legislative bodies to stay alive.

Attorney Byron Starns, who represents the Lake Homeowners Association in the lawsuit, called the bill “unwise.”

“It is premature and disrespectful of the legal process,” maintained Starns, who noted that affected municipalities already have a remedy to challenge any permit conditions imposed by the DNR under the order

by seeking a contested case hearing and judicial appeal.

“The Legislature should wait until the appellate process on Judge Marrinan’s order is concluded,” the attorney said.

Starns questioned whether the bill violates Separation of Powers. “In any event, it is inconsistent with principles of ‘comity’ and ‘abstention,’” he said. “That is basically

a voluntary deference out of respect by one branch of government to another, by one court to another, by one state to another. Deference goes to decisions and the processes underway. There are still motions pending in front of the judge regarding stays and the DNR is going to appeal.”

The body cameras allows us to go back and watch something they did really well or provides them the opportunity to experience a situation firsthand that is pretty rare,” Owens explained. “For a new officer to see that, that is going to make them a better police officer.”

Owens added in his experience as a supervisor, the videos have resolved a lot of the concerns raised.

“We have had people who have been stopped for traffic violations come in who were concerned about what they perceived was a poor attitude from the officer, the tone the officer used or their word choice,” Owens recalled.

“We watch the video together and the community member realizes they kind of remembered it wrong.”

The new technology also provides ample training opportunities for officers.

public expects departments to have the technology. “I think it is becoming commonplace. I think people expect us to have them and they expect to see them; it increases the community’s trust in us because they know that our encounters are being videotaped,” he said.

In addition to building trust, the cameras make the officer’s job easier.

“The camera system aids us on patrol to do our reports, because we can refer to things that we observed that are now captured on the body or squad cameras,” Boehme said. “For statements people make, we can refer back to that.”

Sgt. William Owens explained if someone has a complaint about how an officer acted, the department will invite them to the police station.

“When our community members have concerns about the customer service they receive from the officers, we invite them in and we can sit down and watch the videos together,” he explained. “We get to walk through it together, and I get to comment on the officer’s perspective and then community members can give their perspective.”

The Lino Lakes Police Department (LLPD) has taken a big step to improve transparency and the community’s trust in the department.

On March 9, the LLPD rolled out body-worn cameras and new squad cameras. The department spent a good part of 2017 researching different cameras. Eventually, officers tried out the top two camera models.

“We engaged in an extensive process of research on potential vendors and technologies available. This information enabled us to identify the products that would work best for our community and personnel,” said Director of Public Safety John Swenson. “Once we identified vendors, we spoke with agencies that were currently using the product to solicit feedback and learn from their experience.”

The department ultimately chose the Panasonic Arbitrator system. One of the deciding factors was that many of the officers were already familiar with the hardware and software, as the department has used Panasonic cameras in their squads for quite some time.

Another factor was the desire to have squad cameras and body-worn cameras all on one platform.

So far in 2018, the department has worked on ordering the cameras, programming them and testing them.

Swenson said the entire process (from research to roll-out) has taken about 14 months. To date, the new system has cost the department $102,812; however, everything has not been purchased yet.

“I firmly believe this process has led to a very stable system that will serve our community and staff very well for many years to come,” Swenson said.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers responded to a request to assist in fi xing a bike in the 600 block of Town Center Parkway March 13. The caller was referred to the appropriate agency for assistance.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation in the 8000 block of I-35E March 14. Upon further investigation, the driver was issued a citation for underage drinking and driving, minor consumption and no driver’s license.

• An officer made contact with a male who was being confrontational with staff at a business in the 300 block of Elm Street March 14. The male was trespassed from the property.

• A male in the 600 block of Highland Trail requested information on a possible predatory offender staying in the area March 15. The male was advised on the proper chain of where to obtain the information.

• Officers spoke with a female in the

200 block of Palomino Lane March 15 regarding police at her home. It was determined it was not a Lino Lakes police officer.

• An officer responded to a call of a theft report from the 7000 block of Sunrise Drive March 15. A large sum of money was exchanged for services, which were never provided.

The case is currently under investigation.

• Staff from both the police and fi re divisions responded to a fi re/smoke call in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway March 15. After further investigation, it was determined to be burnt food, and the involved apartment was ventilated.

• An officer responded to a call of a possibly impaired driver leaving a business in the 600 block of Apollo Drive March 15. The driver was stopped and subsequently arrested for fi rst-degree DWI. • An adult male and female were arrested for theft in the 700 block of Apollo Drive March 15. The male

and female were also found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Both were booked into jail for theft and fi fth-degree possession.

• Officer responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 6500 block of Pheasant Hills Drive March 16.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for several traffic violations in the 1300 block of I-35W March 17. The driver was arrested and booked for third-degree DWI, alcohol concentration .08 or more within two hours, speeding and hit-and-run.

• An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 1300 block of I-35W March 17. An adult male was subsequently arrested for multiple weapons and drug charges.

• An officer observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a one-way road in the 1900 block of I-35W March 18. An adult male was subsequently arrested for thirddegree DWI. • Officers were dispatched to a disorderly person report in the 7600

Tabak served as a captain and helped with the interview process for other volunteers. As a captain, she oversaw a group of volunteers stationed in the Minneapolis skyway system whose job was to help direct visitors and answer any questions they had. “Crew 52 was like a little family,” she said.

The day before the game, Tabak was looking at the volunteer Facebook page and noticed a lot of posts about how sad people were for Crew 52 and the entire experience to come to an end. “I thought, why does this have to end? We could continue this and continue volunteering together,” she explained.

Tabak put the idea on social media and immediately she received positive feedback. She created a Forever 52 Facebook page for interested volunteers who wanted to keep making a difference and the next day 400 to 500 people had already signed up.

“I never in my wildest dreams thought it would take off like this.

It’s crazy how much has come of this,” she said.

A core group of eight people began to organize Forever 52 with the mission of sustaining the spirit of Crew 52 volunteerism by mobilizing volunteers and connecting them with existing organizations to meet community needs.

Forever 52 now has

over 1,900 volunteers from all over Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota and even a couple of members from the United Kingdom.

“There are a lot of small fundraisers and events in different areas that don’t have exposure. We can get them vetted dedicated volunteers and exposure,” Tabak explained. “We can help promote their event and maybe make a bigger, better impact.”

The goal is to have the group’s website up and running by the end of the month. There, volunteers will be able to find out where there is a need and fi nd causes they are passionate about. In addition, organizations in need of volunteers can reach out to Crew 52 to inform them about events they need help with.

“Our hope is that we can be a hub for organizations who need volunteers, and the volunteers who might be looking for opportunities,” said Teresa Prunty, one of the core organizers of the group. “I am a big believer in the power of numbers. We already have a huge group of people who are passionate about giving their time to help others.”

Although Forever 52 hasn’t had any “official” events just yet, it has already made a difference by sending volunteers to events such as the mattress races in Burnsville to help raise money for Bridging Inc., a nonprofit organization

that provides donated furniture and household goods to families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness and poverty.

The group also recently participated in a fundraiser for a local school at a church in Robbinsdale.

Forever 52’s kickoff event will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 23. During the event, volunteers will compete at Eagan, Coon Rapids and Chanhassen locations of Feed My Starving Children to see who can pack the most food.

Tabak hopes the group will make a positive impact on communties in a day and age where negativity seems to be all too common.

“We (organizers of Forever 52) met a couple of days after the school shooting in Florida and everyone kept saying how this positive outfl ow of support was renewing our faith in humanity,” she said. “With all that negativity out there, we want to help reignite that positivity.

It sounds corny, but it’s true. We all want to give back and make this world a little bit better.”
