BLAINE — Tables outside of the Best Buy in the Northtown Mall at the 51st annual Wood Carving Show contained carvings of wildlife, characters, nature scenes and walking sticks. The show featured 28 woodcarvers who employ multiple techniques, including chip carving, relief carving and caricature carving. The Metro Chapter of the Minnesota Wood Carvers Association (MWCA) hosted the event, held March 11 and 12. The show was unique in that no artwork was for sale. Rather, the purpose was to display wood carvings and introduce the public to the art form. Mary Juneau, of Blaine, started woodcarving in 2002 after the manager of the Mary Ann Young Senior Center in Blaine told her she thought she would be good at it. “I am not the greatest, but I enjoy it. It is fun,” she

You have probably noticed large buckets and tubes coming out of select maple trees in your neighborhood. Those tubes and buckets are the fi rst step in the process of producing maple syrup. Though sugar maple and

hard maple produce the sweetest sap, Cody Rosetti, an interpretive naturalist at Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes, said sap can also be gathered from red maple, silver maple and box elder trees. All trees should have at least a 10-inch diameter before being tapped. The best time to get tapping

Lino Lakes to upgrade City Hall audio visual equipment BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

LINO LAKES — After discussion at two work sessions and a regular meeting, the City Council approved a technical services contract in the amount of $7,975 with Z Systems Inc. for the design of a complete upgrade of audio/visual equipment to HD in the Council Chambers and associated master control room. The council approved the contract

4-1 at its March 13 meeting; Councilman Rob Rafferty voted against it. The item was previously discussed at the council's Feb. 27 meeting and work session and its March 6 work session. Rafferty said he did not feel the bidding process would be fair to other businesses if Z Systems was involved in the design of the project and had already been paid for its work, and that other businesses would shy away from bidding on the

project. Councilman Bill Kusterman's only concern was that Z Systems originally wanted a 50 percent down payment for the design cost up front. At the March 13 meeting, Mayor Jeff Reinert explained, “This is something we would rather not spend money on, because as you can see we already have mics and speakers, but this is something to keep up with technology. It is getting to the point now where our system is becoming no longer compatible with a lot of the

amenities and attributes of the new system.” Kusterman shared he was happy Z Systems was willing to rework the contract to not require a 50 percent down payment. Reinert explained many of the council members had some concerns and questions, but after meeting with Steve Browender of Z Systems their opinions changed. “We all echoed SEE LINO LAKES, PAGE 9
