Each year, every U.S. citizen is estimated to throw away approximately 70 pounds of clothing. Eighty-five percent of textiles are not recycled or donated, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Lino Lakes and Circle Pines have now taken steps to make recycling these items easier for residents. Last week both cities approved an agreement with Simple Recycling for free residential curbside pickup service to collect clothing, shoes, accessories and household goods.

“One of the things that is happening pretty much nationally now is a lot of cities are looking for ways that they can continue to divert more material from the landfi lls, and textiles is one of the the fastest growing segments of the residential waste stream,” said Sonny Wilkins, vice president of municipal relations. “Our service helps those residents who currently do not donate. It gives them an an easy way to recycle the material and keep it out of the landfi ll.”

Simple Recycling is a third-generation, family-owned business. The company piloted the concept in Michigan and Ohio in 201314 and has now grown to have around 115 municipal contracts in eight states. Wilkins said there are 11 Minnesota cities currently using the company's services.

School Bus Driver Appreciation Day recognizes area drivers

Jessica Murray, of Coon Rapids, has only been a bus driver for a couple of months. Before becoming a bus driver, she was a program coordinator with Enterprise Talent Development, part of the Minnesota Department of Management and Budget.

“With the rising costs of day care and driving to the Capitol every day, it just wasn't worth it,” Murray said. The mother of five, she already had three children in the Centennial School District and was driving them to and from school every day.

She has really enjoyed the job, not only because she gets to spend time with her youngest sons Gunnar and Parker while on the job, but she has also “adopted” the kids on her bus.

“I am a mom, so I kind of have my mama bear on. I see them as an extension of my kids. I make sure they get all the way across the street, I am protective over them,” she said.

The main challenge for Murray has been the germ factory that grows on a bus. Both she and her two boys have had their fair share of stomach bugs and the flu since she started the job.

One thing Murray said might surprise people about the job is that it “actually pays pretty well.”

John Roisul, of Blaine, has been a bus driver for

three years. “When I started, I needed some extra money and when I retired I just kept going,” he said.

Roisul retired from the printing industry; in fact, he recalled working at Press Publications as a freshman in high school in 1965.

The main reason he has stuck with the job is because he enjoys “most” of the kids.

Something that may surprise people, Roisul said, is how noisy a group of kids can be. “If you are a bus driver and think it's going to be quiet on the bus, you are in the wrong business. You better like kids,” he said.

School bus driving is often a thankless job.

Hughes wants to make sure all of their drivers know how appreciated they are. “As a group, they are very concerned about the well-being of their neighbor kids and the people they are transporting,” he said. “They are folks who aren't necessarily doing it because they are getting rich, but it keeps them busy and they enjoy being out and about with the young folks.”

Century College 50th Anniversary Spotlight 50 Stories for 50 Years

LINO LAKES — Bus drivers have one of the most important jobs: they get children to school and back home safely every day despite the road conditions.

Whether it’s on a rural road or a multilane highway, in the sunshine or the rain, on a snowcovered or icy road, Minnesota school bus drivers are responsible for transporting 760,000 students to and from school each day.

Gov. Mark Dayton recently proclaimed Wednesday, Feb. 28, as the second annual School Bus Driver Appreciation Day in an effort to give the drivers the recognition they deserve. According to the proclamation, “School bus drivers are important figures in the children's lives, serving as a positive influence for students; students are nearly eight times safer riding to and from school in a school bus than in cars; and it is estimated that the use of school buses saves the U.S. more than 2.3 billion gallons of fuel per year.”

To honor the drivers, Rehbein Transit Company in Lino Lakes served a free lunch to its employees.

The company currently has around 75 drivers.

“Every student who is going to school rides in a bus to get there. We need to be reliable when it's 10 below and they are standing outside freezing or in the rain. We need to get them to school on time and safely,” said Terminal Manager Michael Hughes.

“The drivers are a pretty good, dedicated group of people who go above and beyond every day.”

John Trojanowski, of Linwood Township, has been a bus driver for eight years. He was previously a bus driver from 1996-98 and decided to pick it up again.

“The fi rst time, it was convenient for me because it was on my way to my work in downtown Minneapolis. I was constantly seeing help wanted signs out there, which prompted me to come this way and check it out,” Trojanowski said.

After a couple of years he started his own direct mail advertising business, but needed some extra cash when the economy crashed. He closed his business around six months ago after 19 years of operation, but couldn't give up driving the school bus, as he loves kids.

“I really try to get personal with my kids. I try to get to know all of their names, and that really takes a lot of the frustration out of the driving with the kids; if they feel like you really know them, their behavior is totally different than if you don't know them,” he said.

Something people may not know about bus drivers, Trojanowski said, is that at any moment they can be randomly tested for drugs or alcohol.

They are also required to take multiple safety classes each year.

In addition, every four years bus drivers have to re-test for their license; if he or she receives three moving violations in one year (in their own vehicle), their license is suspended.

Lastly, he said on average, he sees about three cars each week ignore and drive through the bus stop arm and stop sign.

Centerville updates 2040 Comprehensive Plan

CENTERVILLE — Cities with any land at all for development or redevelopment don't just sit around and wait for the land to develop itself. Or not develop itself, as the case may be. Municipal governments, under the supervision of the Metropolitan Council (Met Council), plan how the land will be used, and they plan it through a meticulous process.

In addition, municipalities don't just plan once: they must have a plan in the works to be completed for each upcoming census year. For example, in 2008, the city of Centerville was working on the 2030 Comprehensive Plan. Now, in 2018, the city is working on the 2040 Comprehensive Plan. It is quite likely that 10 years from now in 2028, Centerville will be planning the 2050 Comprehensive Plan.

At its Feb. 14 meeting, Eric Moss, a planner from WSB & Associates, walked the City Council through the updates to its 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

The main categories to be considered in drafting a comprehensive plan to are: types of housing, commercial development, transportation and infrastructure, parks and recreation, natural resource usage and community facilities and services.

Drafting a comprehensive plan isn't just countless hours of needless paperwork, however. Because engineers and planners must take into account factors such as economic, demographic and population trends, local governments can look into the future and be prepared for changes that impact land use brought about by the dynamics of economics, demographics, climate or population.

It can be enlightening for citizens to look into that crystal ball along with their city leaders.

For example, to touch on the category of housing, the population in the city

was estimated in 2016 at 3,958 with 1,351 households. Centerville has historically had a smaller population than communities that surround it. Although Centerville's population doubled between 1980 and 1990 and, again, between 1990 and 2000, its population has otherwise remained stable.

By 2030, the population is projected to dip slightly to 3,930 with 1,450 households; and by 2040, the population is expected to rise to 4,060 with 1,500 households.

The average of number of people per household is expected to hold steady at around 2.71 persons.

The Met Council has defined Centerville as an “emerging suburban edge” community, which offers connections to both urban amenities and proximity to the open spaces of a rural lifestyle. New developments in emerging suburban edge communities are typically built in a traditional suburban pattern, Moss said.

Centerville has identified its developable areas and currently has slightly more than 100 acres available for development. The Met Council has projected Centerville to build out to 150 new homes at the most.

Less than 1 percent of Centerville's population falls below the poverty line, a percentage which is lower than that of even North Oaks, according to the community profile portion of the Comprehensive Plan update. Much of Centerville's housing is also quite new, and 92.5 percent of the housing is owner- occupied. As only 7.5 percent of housing is occupied by renters, the city enjoys a stable housing base. Housing is the dominant land use in Centerville, making up 42 percent of the area of the city.

“With housing comes infrastructure,” City Engineer/Administrator Mark Statz said. “From 1985 to 2005, we built a lot of our infrastructure. That means that homes and infrastructure are aging at the same time.”

Tonight this vehicle was disabled on the shoulder of I-35W when it was struck by a passing vehicle. Lino Lakes Fire responded and did a great job extricating the driver from the vehicle. Traffic laws are enforced in an attempt to prevent incidents like this.” The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the accident.

The Met Council identified affordable housing for every jurisdiction at 14 units, due to a need to spread affordable housing around the metropolitan area.

At the same time, the Met Council doesn't want to shoehorn people into a place that doesn't meet their needs, Moss said.

People who use affordable housing are police officers, teachers, nurses and people straight out of school not yet ready to buy a home. Centerville shows 138 residential units that are considered to be affordable housing.

The city is right on schedule to complete its updated 2040 Comprehensive Plan. On April 11, the City Council will review the utilities and water portion of the plan and on April 25, the housing and transportation portion.

On May 1, the Planning Commission will review the draft plan at an open house.

On May 9, the council will review

implementation of the plan and on June 5, the Planning Commission will hold an official public hearing on the full draft plan.

Finally, on June 13, the council will adopt the full plan and approve its submission for review by the adjacent communities of Lino Lakes and Hugo.

When the 2040 Comprehensive Plan is approved once and for all, will the city take a quick breather before looking forward to work on the 2050 Comprehensive Plan?

“After we get totally built out, all we have to do is change the dates and keep the same thing,” Councilman Steve King said.

Statz told the City Council the Met Council predicts Centerville won't fill up until after 2040. On the other hand, the city could start the whole cycle anew and redevelop previously developed areas.

CENTERVILLE TIDBITS The Centerville City Council took the following action at its Feb. 14 meeting: • By a vote of 4-0 (Councilman D. Love absent) approved Ordinance 88a, Second Series, addressing the 2018 fee schedule, water rate tier structure and water meter fees.

Due to increases in water meter materials, water meter fees for residential properties increased 6 percent, from $411 to $436. Commercial, industrial and irrigation fees increased 7.25 percent from $527 to $565. Under the new tiered system, residents using up to 15,000 gallons during a bi-monthly billing period will pay $2.08 per 1,000 gallons.

Residents using 15,000 to 30,000 gallons during that same period will pay $2.38 for every thousand gallons they use. Residents using more than 30,000 gallons during the same rate period will pay $2.71 for every thousand gallons of water they use. Commercial users during that same billing period will pay $2.08 for every thousand gallons up to 500,000 gallons and $2.71 for every thousand gallons for usage amounts greater than 500,000 gallons.

• Approved the Parks and Recreation Committee recommendation to donate $200 to Centennial Community Education to subsidize the fee for children who want to attend a three-day, two-hour skateboard camp in LaMotte Park.

Unanimously directed city staff to begin soliciting bids for residential garbage collection services.

The requests for proposal (RFP) will encompass garbage, refuse, recycling and yard waste services.

The current garbage service contract is coming up for renewal, and has been extended through June, City Attorney Kurt Glaser said. The new contract is expected to be awarded in April. The city is currently under contract with Waste Management, but owns all the waste containers. The upcoming contract will not pertain to businesses, commercial buildings or residences of more than three units.

Approved the 2.75 percent cost-ofliving adjustment in the nonunion pay plan and pay matrix for five of the eight available positions. Three positions were not included in the raise, as those positions were negotiated earlier in the year.

According to its personnel policy, the city reviews the pay plan every year and makes changes it determines are necessary. Salary adjustments for union members are negotiated separately.

Adjourned to a closed session to discuss negotiation strategies for the purchase agreement with Ruffridge-Johnson and negotiation strategy for the upcoming union labor agreement.

Shifting tolerance

W

e’re getting off too easily. This is an opinion I came across in a story and separate essay online while reading through the wave of articles and commentaries responding to the latest mass shooting in our country. Voicing a point of view I don’t recall hearing or seeing anywhere in the mainstream media, the writers pointed out that the way mass shootings are currently being covered is filtering out the true horror and grisly reality of what really happens when bullets tear through human flesh and bones.

The assertion is that before taking a stand or voting on legislation, the general public (and perhaps more importantly, the politicians) should Angle of be required to see the uncensored aftermath when scores of innocent View people are massacred.

We don’t have to search too far Paul Dols back into the past to find graphic examples of photographs depicting the tragic results of mistakes and bad behavior. In the book “Strange Days, Dangerous Nights: Photos From the Speed Graphic Era” by Larry Millett, images from the archives of the St. Paul Pioneer Press and St. Paul Dispatch graphically depict accidents, fires and murders from a time when these types of vivid, sometimes sensational photographs were commonly published in the pages of the daily newspaper. Journalistic standards and the public’s acceptance for this type of photography appears to have changed by the mid 1960s. I’m not sure if there is a direct correlation, but this was also the approximate time period when advances in automobile safety (such as seat belts and safety glass) were made and attitudes toward drunk driving began to change. In a much more recent example, I challenge anyone who thinks they have the superior skills to text while driving to look at the photo of the wreckage from the deadly crash that occurred on Highway 36 last week.

In an article published on the Huffington Post website, writers Nick Wing and Matt Ferner use interviews with a trauma surgeon, ballistic expert and medical examiner, along with actual coroner reports from the mass shooting in Las Vegas to graphically reveal the power and shocking brutality of these types of attacks. The writers also make the observation that while we are often called to remember the victims who have died in these incidents, we are “rarely asked to confront the unsettling circumstances of the deaths themselves.”

On a more positive and hopeful note, I was impressed by the local response last week by students and also our government representatives following the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida. I thought that the students leading the demonstration were thoughtful and articulate and was equally impressed with White Bear Lake Mayor Jo Emerson and City Council member Dan Jones, who treated the students with patience and respect during what turned out to be a civics lesson and mutual learning experience for everyone involved. Personally, I was surprised when the majority of students in the council chambers indicated that they experienced a sense of fear at school and found it hard to imagine what that would be like on a daily basis.

The mayor didn’t sugar coat her responses to questions from the students. She attempted to explain the realities and limits of city government while also offering lists of politicians to contact and encouragement for them to stick with their efforts for change in the long run. Council member Jones used the example of how it took a generation to adapt to the concept of recycling, but he could have also used the examples of seat belts and smoking.

Maybe members of this up and coming generation can be instrumental in helping to put an end to this cycle of senseless violence.

Busting bee myths

W

hen you think of the word “bee,” what springs to mind? If you said “sting,” “yellow and black” or “honey,” you are certainly not alone with your word associations, but you are 90 percent incorrect.

Why? Because what most people associate with bees, only applies to social bees, such as honey and bumble bees. And those types of bees make up meerly 10 perLawnchair cent of the world’s bee population.

This means that they lit b T live and work alone; they do not divide the labor like social bees.

The female solitary bees are essentially “single moms” that find the housing, lay the eggs and provide for their young. The males live a short two weeks as adults and aren’t around to help. As for the “busy as a bee” saying, let’s give credit where credit is due: solitary female bees are the busiest and we have over 400 species of these unsung heroes in Minnesota.

The fact that solitary bees don’t have a worker bee on special assignment to defend the nest makes these bees very gentle, virtually stingless. Even if a person were to get stung, the sting is more like a mosquito bite and there are no known allergic reactions to these stings.

Solitary bees are also not just yellow and black. In fact, they exist in a rainbow of colors and sizes ranging from less than one-sixteenth of an inch to over an inch and a half.

Solitary bees do not make honey.

But what they lack in honey-making skills, they make up for in pollination. In fact, they pollinate 60150 times better than honey bees. A person might consider these bees to be “Rodney Dangerfields of the bee world;” even though they are incredible pollinators, they just get no respect.

Solitary bees’ anatomy sets them up to be amazing pollinators. They are generally hairy little critters and have a rather unsophisticated way of carrying pollen. They basically belly flop onto blossoms and cover their abdomens with dry pollen. They are a mess! As they fly to the next flower, pollen scatters everywhere.

Whereas honey bees wet the pollen so it doesn’t fly around, and pack it neatly in the pollen baskets on their legs. Honey bees are much more efficient at collecting pollen for themselves, and that’s exactly why they are less effective as pollinators.

As a society, we are beginning to realize that we need to think about the health of pollinators because our food supply largely relies on their pollination. To me, protecting pollinators is a common-sense form of self-preservation.

According to E.O. Wilson in “The Forgotten Pollinators,” Eighty percent of the species of our food plants worldwide, depend on pollination by animals, almost all of which are insects.

Thank you to 911 and State Troopers I extend my whole hearted Thank you, well done to Minnesota's 911 system and our State Troopers.

On a recent Sunday, my wife was driving on I-35W northbound, just south of the Lexington Avenue Northeast exit, when she suddenly, loudly, kind of garbled, "I'm having a stroke! I'm having a stroke!"

She was able to safely pull onto the shoulder. While further exclaiming "Call 911!" I already had my phone in my hands. The 911 agent was so professional, calmly reassuring, while getting the essential key facts from me.

We had a State Trooper squad car pulling up behind us, in less than five minutes. The trooper calmly and effectively provided us essential information, including offering assistance over and above what turned out to be necessary.

Additional good news, my wife's episode was over and she was okay within 30 seconds, well before I was off the phone with 911. I drove us to the nearest ER (thanks again to the trooper!) It turned out my wife had a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) due to Atrial Fibrillation (AFib), not a stroke.

Thank you 911 and State Patrol!

The 2018 Iditarod race started last weekend. While we don't have any dog sled races quite like the famous Alaskan race, dog sledding has deďŹ nitely been an Anoka County pastime. This 1939 photograph shows a dog sled race stop-over at Trost's Garage located on the southwest corner of Central Avenue and Main Street in Blaine. As the name suggests, the garage was owned by Henry "Hank" Trost of Johnsville.

Your One-Hour Guide to Making Better Decisions,â€? features an exclusive film showing four strangers struggling to emerge from an escape room.

Escape rooms are themed rooms where players are locked inside and then must uncover clues and solve puzzles to escape the room before time runs out.

During the program, participants will consider current problems they’re facing and explore new strategies for solving those problems. Effective April 2, the U.S. Department of State will increase the passport processing fee from $25 to $35. The increase only applies to passport applicants who use the DS-11 form — typically first-time applicants over age 16, children under age 16 and applicants who are re-applying after reporting their passport lost or stolen. LINO LAKES CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lino Lakes City Council took the following action at its Feb. 27 meeting: • Recognized Erik Stone for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included expenditures and minutes from the council's Feb. 5 work session and closed session, and Feb. 12 meeting.

• Approved the second reading of an ordinance calling for the vacation of a drainage and utility easement over Lot 15, Block 2 of NorthPointe 2nd Addition. Mike and Shelby Piette submitted a land use application requesting the vacation of a portion of a drainage easement on the property (6743 Palm Street) in order to construct a deck.

The easement overlaps an existing Northern States Power Co. (Xcel Energy) gas and electric easement located on the property.

The council also approved the summary publication of the ordinance.

• Approved payment No. 3 (the final payment) for the 2017 mill and overlay project in the amount of $21,026 to North Valley Inc. The project included Second Avenue, Glenview Avenue/Lane and Parkview Drive.

The construction contract was in the amount of $492,673; the total amount earned by the contractor was $420,517 — $72,156 under budget.

• Authorized the preparation of plans and specifications for the 2018 trunk water main project. The proposed project includes the installation of approximately 1,100 feet of a 12-inch diameter trunk main from Marshan Lane to Park Court along Lake Drive, and 330 feet of a 12-inch diameter main from Well No. 6 to Well No. 3.

Along with the water main improvements, the city plans to install a 10-foot-wide bituminous trail along Lake Drive from Marshan Lane to Park Court. The budget for the project is $415,000, which will come out of the trunk utility area and unit fund and the parks and trail fund.

Right of way acquisition will be required from three property owners for the project. WSB & Associates will complete the land acquisition, plans and specifications and provide bid documents for an amount not to exceed $39,352.

• Appointed Community Development Director Michael Grochala as the representative for the Watershed Based Funding Group. The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) has implemented a Clean Water funding program to provide performance-based grants to local government units.

projects. Eligible recipients are local governments that have a current state-approved and locally adopted water management plan. Local units of government must choose to participate in the process to maintain eligibility, and communities must also appoint a representative to the work group.

• Approved an escrow deposit agreement with Jorgenson Construction Inc. The construction contract for Fire Station No. 2 was awarded to Jorgenson Construction in February 2015 in the amount of $3.85 million. The project included site grading and surface water management facilities, and construction of Fire Station No. 2 and internal roads.

The project was substantially completed in December 2015. However, final payment was withheld pending completion of certain repair and replacement items. Failure of some installed turf, along with required tree replacement, has led to additional delays in the project completion.

At this time, all work items have been completed with the exception of 12 trees proposed for replacement in spring of 2018. Under the terms of the agreement, Jorgenson Construction will

provide a cash deposit in the amount of $10,500 (12 trees at $700 each multiplied by 1.25). If the work is not completed by June 1, the escrow funds will be used to reimburse all city costs.

The council also approved change order No. 3, which represents a deduct of $13,401 from the contract price. The amount includes changes related to locking mechanisms on two doors ($600) and overall project delay costs ($14,000) resulting from project completion 14 days after the contracted completion date. The final construction cost is $3,890,641, and the fi nal payment amount to Jorgenson Construction (including retainage) is $90,193.

Peterson ends self-exile from wrestling with a medal at state

Cody Peterson, a senior who had not wrestled a full season since eighth grade, closed his abbreviated career with a podium appearance at the state tournament.

The Centennial 195-pounder placed sixth in Class 3A in action Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.

One of four Cougar state qualifiers, he finished with a 27-6 record.

“Cody wrestled varsity in eighth grade and did really well,” said coach Tim Matheson. “He didn’t wrestle in ninth grade.

He came out in 10th grade and was having a great season but broke his ankle at the Rumble on the Red. Then he didn’t wrestle as a junior.”

Matheson, a former Cougar state champion and longtime assistant coach, took over as head coach when 33-year-old Steve Peterson passed away of cancer just before the season, a loss that deeply affected all the wrestlers. He got in touch with Cody Peterson (no relation).

“I talked to Cody (about coming back) and he decided to wrestle again.

I think out of respect for Coach Petey.”

His older brother Tyler plays basketball for South Dakota State, and his twin brother Jarrod is a two-time all-conference linebacker who’ll play college football. Cody didn’t play football or basketball himself.

Peterson, who qualified by winning the section championship, cruised in his state opener 8-0 over Minneapolis Washburn’s Sean Follega, then lost to Lakeville South’s Jared Stewart 10-3. In the losers bracket, he bounced back to defeat Forest Lake’s Dylan Mills 2-1 and Owatonna’s Nick Staska 9-3 to clinch a top-six finish. In the fifth-place match, he faced Stewart again and lost 3-2.

Emily Shilson, in her bid to become the first girl to win a match at the state tournament, lost both her matches, and finished her junior year 25-8. The Section 5AAA champion lost to a pair of freshmen, Owatonna’s Blake West 6-2 and New Prague’s Nicholas Novak 9-2. This was her second state trip.

Last year she went as a section runner-up and lost her only match.

Cougar sophomore 160-pound Isaiah Bettinger (17-21) lost to Mound-Westonka’s Ben Schmatz 14-1 in his lone match. First-round losers get a second match only if the wrestler who beat them wins in the second round.

Peterson captured the section championship to qualify for state, where he won three of six matches. Adept with the double-leg and the ankle pick for takedowns, and the half-Nelson and arm bar on the mat, Peterson had a 27-6 record for the season.

Shocker: Cougar girls (24-4) ousted by Park Center in O.T.

Centennial girls basketball was clearly the best team in a strong Section 5AAAA field during the regular season, but the Cougars will not be playing in the state tournament next week.

A young Park Center team that Centennial drubbed earlier this season rose up to knock off the state’s No. 3 ranked team 81-76 in overtime on Saturday in the section semifinals.

Park Center has gone to state four straight years — winning Class 3A titles twice, then moving up to 4A the last two years — and knocked Centennial out last year, too, in the section finals, but had graduated four starters, and their head coach resigned.

This was supposed to be Centennial’s year. Indeed, the Cougars had won 17 straight games heading into the section semifi nals, including an 87-65 rout of Park Center on Jan. 3.

“Very painful. It's pretty raw for me, our coaching staff and most of all, for our team,” coach Jill Becken.

“I feel bad for our seniors because they have been such a nice group to work with and we don't get to practice this next week and prepare for the next game. We will miss our seniors: Sydney Stapleton, Claire Orth, Lexi Matthews, Sydney Allen, Natalie Danzl and Emily Mulberry.”

The Pirates (19-9) were boosted by two freshmen forwards: Adalia McKenzie, who torched the Cougars for 25 points, and T’Naye Griffi n, who pumped in 18 more. Senior guard Sommer Blakemore, the only returning starter, added 19 points.

“As a team we didn't shoot the ball as well as we would have liked, and Park Center shot it better than I've

seen them shoot all season,” Becken assessed.

“Last time we played them, they pressed us and we got a lot of easy baskets in transition. They played half-court defense this time.”

Against a Cougar team that allowed just 41 points per game during its 17-game win streak, the Pirates went into overtime tied 70-70 and ruled the extra session 11-6.

Centennial fi nished a superb season 24-4, while No. 13 ranked Park Center will try for its fi fth straight state trip against No. 9 Roseville on Thursday evening.

Centennial got 22 points from junior guard Taylor McAulay, 18 from 6-3 junior center Sara Stapleton, 14 from their 1,000-pooint senior guard Sydney Stapleton and 10 from senior guard Claire Orth. Fouling out in the overtime were Orth and Sydney Stapleton.

The Cougars, down 63-55, rallied by forcing some turnovers and going to the line by getting fouled on drives.

They took a 65-63 lead but missed a couple chances to pad the lead.

With the score 66-66, the Cougars had the ball with the clocking winding down under 15 seconds.

Orth drove for the hoop and missed.

Blakemore came out with the rebound, got fouled and swished two free shots with 7.7 seconds left.

Centennial kept its cool as Sydney Stapleton got the ball down the floor and found Orth on the baseline. Orth buried a game-tying layup as time expired.

But the Cougars could not break the frisky young Pirates in the overtime and their season ended.

The Cougars won their fi rst-round game over Osseo 71-37. Sara Stapleton scored 22 points, Claire Orth 18 and Lexi Matthews 10 for the Cougars.

Last year, Centennial lost to Maple Grove in the section finals. “I went home and shot pucks in the garage for about an hour,” Jack Menne said. “I was so frustrated. But we did it tonight. It’s pretty exciting.”

This group went unbeaten as mites (in which scores aren’t officially kept, but everyone does), then went unbeaten in district for two years in bantams. They reached state in both bantams and peewees. And now the big one, the one that’s on television and fills an NHL rink with fans.

Centennial had a 33-22 edge in shots with Travis Allen making 18 saves. Allen and the Cougars shut out their first two section foes, Coon Rapids 9-0 and Anoka 4-0.

Centennial will be making its fourth trip to state in hockey. The Cougars were champions in 2004 and returned in 2013 and 2014.

The section championship was theirs for the taking and the Centennial boys hockey team latched onto it with some highlight-reel shooting last Thursday night.

The Cougars pulled away from Maple Grove with a three-goal burst early in the third period and beat the Crimson 6-4 for the Section 5AA championship at Aldrich Arena.

“This group has had success all the way up — mites, squirts, peewees, bantams, now varsity,” coach Ritch Menne said. “I don’t think it’s anything we (coaches) do.

These guys just find a way to win. They are a really tight group that’s always gotten along.”

Five players scored, with Luke McGregor notching two goals and an assist.

The Cougars (19-6-3), clearly the best team in a section with no. top-ten ranked teams, advance to the state Class 2A tournament (see separate article) on the heels of the Cougar girls team which placed second in the state tournament Feb. 21-24, beating Lakeville South and Eagan before losing to Edina.

“It’s a dream come true,” McGregor said.

“This is so great for our hockey association and our community.”

Against a conference rival they’d beaten 5-1 and 4-2 previously, the Cougars had a battle from Maple Grove (13-12-3) in the

section finals at Aldrich Arena.

“We knew they would be tough to put away,” Menne said. “Our kids were very resilient tonight. When they would score, we would score again quickly.”

Maple Grove led on Matt Jaglo’s goal at 7:22 of the first period. Andrew Stuart pulled Centennial even at 11:24 on a rush to the net.

McGregor delivered an improbable goal at 7:38 of the second period. Hemmed between two defenders about 30 feet out, spinning to his left and falling down, McGregor saw an opening and fired off a shot. Somehow it got past Crimson goalie Ethan Haider.

“I definitely got luck on that one,” McGregor said. ”We were told that in a small rink like this to put up as many shots as we can. No, I didn’t think it would go in! I got knocked to the ground and didn’t know it went in until the guys started pulling me off the ice.”

Maple Grove’s Tyler Kostelecky struck on the power play at 10:40 of the second period. Carter Wagner regained the lead for the Cougars at 11:36 with a breakaway goal down the middle of the rink.

The Cougars found themselves tied again at 3-3 when Kostelecky scored his second goal at 3:55 of the third. This time the Cougars responded with three goals in five minutes.

William Francis got the prettiest one, a wrap-around goal off a feed from Hayden Brickner. He got his stick on the puck in mid-air at the side of the net and flipped it past the post and apparently off the goalie’s back for a 4-3 lead. Brickner made it 5-3 as he slipped one past the goalie oneon-one just before sliding past him headfirst along with a defender. McGregor came off the boards and rifle another one into the net for a 6-3 edge.

Asked what enabled Centennial to respond like that, senior co-captain Jack Menne said: “It’s because we are brothers, we always have each other’s backs. We grew up together and we’ve

The Circle Pines City Council took the following action at its Feb. 28 meeting: • Heard from Councilman Dean Goldberg, who thanked Superintendent Brian Dietz for his time. He said the two recently met to discuss how Goldberg could assist the school district.

• Mayor Dave Bartholomay relayed he and Councilman Matt Percy, along with 25-30 other community members, recently met to discuss district funding. He also congratulated the Centennial varsity girls hockey team for finishing second in the state tournament.

• Bartholomay relayed the Utilities Commission report from its Feb. 21 meeting. Members approved a $300 donation to the Circle Pines Lexington Lions Club for the annual Easter Egg Hunt and welcomed new member Curtis Theis.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included the Feb. 13 meeting minutes and licenses as well as general fund, police and fi re disbursements.

• Approved a joint powers agreement with Anoka County for the construction of a multiuse trail between Lexington Avenue and Village Parkway as part of the Lake Drive project. The trail safety

improvement was added to the project at the city's request and is estimated to cost $26,211, which will be funded through the city's state aid dollars.

City Administrator Patrick Antonen said the project cost would have likely been in the $35,000 range if the city completed the project on its own.

Councilman Matt Percy said, “I think there is a real need for it.

I have seen people walking back with groceries in their hands from Festival and that is literally how they get home; they are walking on Lake Drive.”

Goldberg added, “I think it's a great project. I have seen people walking on that trail, and there are spots where the rocks get thick.

There are a lot of elderly people walking along there and it is not easy to walk on or bike on.”

The next City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at City Hall.

STUDENT NEWS Kelty Shroyer, a senior at The Webb School, was recently named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Shroyer, of Lino Lakes, was among the top 1 percent of 2018 U.S. high school seniors to achieve semifinalist distinction in September 2017.

Of the 16,000 students selected nationwide as semifinalists, 90 percent (roughly 15,000) were chosen to be finalists. They are eligible to vie for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $32 million; results will be announced in April.

Shroyer has participated in the Wilderness Instruction and Leadership Development (WILD) program for three years and Mock Trial for four years, serving as the varsity captain for the last two. He has been a member of the tech crew for two years and quiz bowl for three years, and serves as captain this year.

He has been a prefect for two years and participated in the studio band program for four years, including as co-director for the last two years.

Shroyer has been a member of the Son Will Society for four years and a writer for the Oracle for three years; he is a member of the National Honor Society

and won the AP English, WILD and Studio Band book awards last year.

SIMPLE RECYCLING: Two Quad cities add recycling services for residents FROM PAGE 1

sent out to residents including specially designed recycling collection bags and informational materials. Residents need to bag the acceptable items and place bags at the curb on recycling collection day by the recycling cart.

Simple Recycling will then collect the bags and leave extra bags after collection.

A lot of the clothing and household goods will be sent to thrift stores; the remaining collected materials are then graded and converted into items such as home insulation and carpet padding. The program is free for the city and its residents, and the city will be compensated $20 per ton of material collected.

Lino Lakes Lino Lakes has discussed the company over the last several months, but some council members were uncomfortable with the five-year agreement.

Ultimately, the council voted 4-1 on Feb. 27 to approve a one-year trial contract. Councilman Dale Stoesz voted no.

Stoesz said he did not feel the program was necessary, as residents already have ample opportunities to recycle goods elsewhere.

“I think it's fine to give them a try. I like that they have to come back to us and give us a report after a year,” said Mayor Jeff Reinert.

“There are 27 different ways to recycle these days. We will try it out and in a year they will be in front of us and we will be able to ask them a lot of questions about how it went.”

Councilwoman Melissa Maher said she was “super excited” about the program and already had a bag full of clothes to put out on the curb.

Circle Pines Circle Pines previously discussed the topic in January after a representative from the company gave a presentation about the program. The council voted unanimously to approve the contract Feb. 28.

City Admnistrator Patrick Antonen said he had checked with some of the company's references, particularly St. Louis Park, which has used the company for about a year.

“They are very happy with the service. The last five years prior to this, they had a different company doing curbside pickup of soft goods and said in the fi rst six months they collected more than they had

in five years with the other company,” he said.

Councilman Dean Goldberg had one concern.

“Organizations like Goodwill serve a portion of the population who use that facility to buy clothing and other things that now will be donated for this company's purpose. In addition to the changes in the federal tax codes, are we helping to put a nail in the coffi n at Goodwill by doing this as a community?”

Councilwoman Jennifer Rauner responded, “With Goodwill, it doesn't matter what you put in that box or bag when you drop it off; they actually go through that and figure out what is sellable, so a lot of that gets thrown out. I think where this company is going to come into service is with items that might not be reusable for the average consumer to rebuy.”

She added, “For me as a mom of two kids, I have a bag of jeans with holes in them and instead of throwing them away, I am going to put them at the end of the curb and they are going to be made into insulation.”

Percy said even though the city has the service available for residents, it is 100 percent up to them how they choose to recycle or not recycle their items. “It is completely voluntary. There is no obligation for people to put their recyclables out into this bag. If they want to hold on to everything or bring it to Goodwill or donate it to Disabled American Veterans, that is totally up to them,” he said.

Centerville Although Centerville has not had discussions with Simple Recycling at this time, City Administrator/

Engineer Mark Statz said the city is not ruling it out as an option.

“We are waiting until we are done with our waste hauling/ recycling request for proposals before we look at additional offerings. I think a lot of communities are hearing that their citizens would like these advanced services, and we will likely discuss these options with council in the future,” he said.

“One of the reasons we have not jumped onto this particular idea yet, is consideration for some of the charitable organizations, which offer similar services.”

Lexington The city of Lexington does not have a contract with Simple Recycling, as Deputy Clerk Mary Vinzant said it would be “nearly impossible for them to maneuver the logistics” due to the city's open hauling system, which results in trucks in the city four to five days each week.

Lexington also has a donation box at City Hall for clothing and textiles in addition to a spring recycling day.

LEXINGTON CITY COUNCIL NOTES The Lexington City Council took the following action at its March 1 meeting: • The City Council planned to hold a public hearing on the Lovell building, but cancelled because the speaker planned to give a presentation within the regular agenda instead.

• Approved the consent agenda, which included several claims and bills, as well as some standard financial reports.

• Listened to an update from Dominium Acquisition, LLC on the progress of and plans for the Lovell building site. ° A representative of Briggs and Morgan detailed the housing finance program, which covers individual unit renting costs. One-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units are priced at $1,000, $1,200 and $1,350 per month, respectively. ° Michael Krych, of the Minneapolis-based BKV Group, gave the council a presentation of the proposal’s overall layout. This included an overview of the site’s proposed 180 units, as well as amenities and administrative procedures.

° Krych described the building as a long-term investment, with enough money saved to provide continuous updates of services across 10 to 15 years. “We want this to be a really high-quality project,” he said.

• Approved a resolution implementing a housing finance program for the Lovell building. The project obtained the City Council’s preliminary approval within the same resolution as well.

• Approved Planning & Zoning Commission’s recommendation to approve the appointment of Michelle Koch to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Chris Olsson. Gloria Murphy, the wife of Councilmember Mike Murphy, was simultaneously approved for the filling of future vacancies.

• Appointed Sharon Ginter to the Lexington Park Board.

• Councilmember Diane Harris gave a brief report on the local airport. Harris stated that, during the period of the Super Bowl, the airport experienced “record numbers of traffic.” A source was stated secondhand as claiming there were planes coming and leaving

every three to four minutes.

• Mayor Mark Kurth commented on the 2018 First-Time Home Buyer program in Anoka County. The program itself covers a plan for families to buy their first homes in the county. Kurth voiced his own concerns in regards to how the media portrayed the cost of the program and reaffirmed that a house could be bought for a $1,000 down payment.

• Councilmember Kim DeVries provided an update on the Memorial Park ice rink. DeVries informed the council Tree of Life Church would be interested in servicing it again next year. The pastor stipulated that a condition of the agreement, according to DeVries, would be increased media coverage and attention. Though the ice rink saw a large number of visitors, it was said that they would have liked to see more.

The next City Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 15 at City Hall.

After 18 years in the irrigation business, Gus Gustafson is ready to sell. Unfortunately, his timing is bad.

Eighty-five percent of his business is within a 5-mile radius of White Bear Lake, the area under a court-ordered irrigation ban.

If the lake reaches 924 feet, owners of lawn care businesses will be singing in the rain, but that hasn’t happened in 13 years.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had a Feb. 28 deadline to issue a court-ordered directive to 10 communities within the circle. The agency amended appropriation permits for the municipalities, imposing restrictions on residential irrigation and per capita water use.

Gustafson owns Aquatec Irrigation Service Inc. on Leibel Street in White Bear Township. Health issues are forcing him to retire. “It’s hard to sell a business to begin with,” he said, “but the value of my company went down the drain with this deal.”

An irrigation ban is one of several requirements mandated by District Court Judge Margaret Marrinan in her Aug. 30 ruling in the lake level lawsuit. She sided with the plaintiff, the White Bear Lake Restoration Association, which blamed excessive groundwater pumping, permit-

ted by the DNR, for low lake levels.

Implementing the new permit language is now up to the 10 municipalities. They will be writing ordinances to enforce the changes to water appropriation permits.

“We have to comply with the new language,” said Bill Short, White Bear Township clerk/treasurer.

The township will draft a plan and share it with residents as to how an amendment will be enacted and enforced, he noted.

“The only reasonable way to enact anything like this is through an ordinance.”

Key issues, added Short, is whether a residential ban applies to those on private wells. And should it be expanded to businesses and public spaces such as parks?

“We don’t know the answers,” Short maintained. “And here’s a good one: Would someone using a hose to hand water a brown spot on their lawn be in violation? That is how absurd this whole thing is. There is a whole vocabulary of details that we have to figure out. It still gives me indigestion.”

Under the court order, a residential irrigation ban must be enforced when the level of White Bear Lake is below 923.5 feet and continue until it has reached an elevation of 924 feet. The ban is one of several provisions in the order that took effect the last day in February.

The DNR also modified permits to require communities have an enforceable plan to phase down per capita residential water use to 75 gallons per day and total daily water use (including commercial) to 90 gallons.

Enactment of this requirement must be completed no later than one year from the date of the order.

All the impacted cities met with the DNR earlier this month to get an update on the permit language. White Bear Lake City Manager Ellen Richter said their interpretation is that a ban applies only to residential.

“We’ll have to make determinations on how best to enforce that,” she said.

“Certainly, the City Council has concerns about equity issues and we’ll explore that with them. There is cross-jurisdictional equity, too. Wording will be a challenge.

We have to comply with the spirit of the ruling but there are a lot of factors coming out.”

One of those factors could be new wells.

What’s to stop property owners from pounding down a sand point into the water table?

“As we draft the irrigation ban, we anticipate banning residential irrigation from all sources, including municipal supply, pumping from the lake or ponds, as well as private wells and sand point wells,” replied Mark Burch, city engineer.

Gustafson is not surprised by the judge’s crackdown on irrigation. “I saw it coming 10 years ago,” he said. “I’ve been trying to tell people to conserve water, but property owners don’t care. We are in the land of 10,000 lakes. I tell customers they need a rain or soil sensor by law for an irrigation

system, but they disconnect them. Commercial properties are the biggest culprit.

It can be pouring rain and their sprinkler systems are on. That makes me crazy.

Water is pretty important, but there are ways to conserve without people telling us we can’t do something.”

According to a groundwater modeling tool developed for the DNR, the court’s residential irrigation ban will only increase water levels by 1 inch per year. These calculations were based on the Met Council’s estimates of the volume of water used for irrigation.

Other cities are being forced to follow suit with ordinances of their own. The township’s Short pointed out that Stillwater has five wells, but only one is within the 5-mile radius. “If push came to shove, could they stop using that well and somehow disconnect it from the rest of their system? Would that protect them from this order? The DNR has to figure out all that stuff, too,” he said.

In an email to local legislators, Hugo City Administrator Bryan Bear called the court-ordered regulations “confusing and unjust.”

“Unfortunately, the rules make absolutely no sense. If we were to try to conserve water (something we are very good at in Hugo), we would definitely not do these things,” Bear wrote. “Additionally, the best and latest science is concluding that most of our communities have insignificant impacts to the lake level and, further, most of us are nonparticipants in the lawsuit.”

Both the DNR and the city of White Bear Lake intend to appeal the ruling as soon as the judge issues her decision on motions to stay the court order. The DNR and city attorneys requested a stay until the Minnesota Court of Appeals decides the case.

In the meantime, the DNR is prohibited by the order from issuing new or expanded water appropriations. This includes the dewatering technique used in construction projects, which has stymied development. An attorney for the plaintiff said an agreement has been submitted to modify the court’s order “to allow certain temporary, dewatering permits.” A revision to the order is expected soon.

Karlson shared some numbers: • The city had about $51 million in new construction last year.

• The city issued 134 permits for new home construction and one for commercial.

• Following last summer’s storms, the city issued more than 4,800 permits for damaged roofs and siding. Karlson explained the city is still thousands of permits behind because it doesn’t have adequate staffing levels to complete all the needed inspections.

He then shared some of the impacts Lino Lakes and surrounding areas could see from the ongoing White Bear Lake lawsuit, including an irrigation ban and a per capita water use plan. “If the ruling goes through, it would have a huge statewide impact on all communities,” Karlson said.

Karlson said the City Council is having discussions about whether or not to remodel and expand the Community Room in City Hall or to allow New Creations Childcare to lease the space.

In addition, he said, the council has really put a big focus on improving and maintaining the city’s parks and trails through the establishment of a Parks and Trails Management Plan and establishing annual funding allocations.

Lastly, he noted the Veterans Memorial, which was previously approved to be located on the island in front of City Hall, is still in the works and in the future the council will begin promoting and helping to raise funds for the cause.

Lexington “We have a lot of things going on in Lexington.

Our built-out community is redeveloping,” Petracek said. “2018 is going to be a really good year for us.”

The main two projects going on in Lexington currently include Ephesians at Lexington, which is an 89-unit affordable housing apartment complex off of Syndicate Avenue and DuWayne Avenue.

“Our hope is this development will spur more redevelopment in that area and other apartment owners will follow suit and start dressing up their complexes too,” he said.

The other Lexington project is the redevelopment of the Lovell building site. Petracek explained due to some changes in the tax code, the proposed 200-unit project, initially limited to seniors, has transformed into some senior living units as well as general occupancy affordable housing. Petracek explained the city is still working with tenants of the building to try to help them relocate to another site in Lexington or nearby.

The hope is for Dominium Acquisition to close on the site in December. The building would then be demolished shortly after closing and construction would likely take place in the middle of 2019.

Petracek also informed the group of the new O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Store. The store is to move from its current address on 9175 Lake Drive and build a 10,000-square-foot building next to Circle Pines Sausage Haus. Construction will likely begin this spring.

will be more about maintenance and amenities,” Bartholomay said.

Bartholomay touched on five topics, including street reconstruction, Golden Lake’s water quality, the Anoka County Library expansion, Casey’s General Store and the I-35W MnPass project.

In 2006, the City Council developed a 15-year plan to touch and/or repair every street in the city, including utilities. Bartholomay said the plan has been very successful and is almost complete.

The Centennial Library, located next to City Hall, will close its doors as soon as school starts next fall for an expansion that will double the space. The library will remain closed for construction during the entire school year and re-open in time for the busy summer season.

Bartholomay said the new Casey’s General Store is expected to bring around 25 new jobs to the area. He guessed the Pizza Hut building would be torn down in April and the new building would be completed by late fall or early winter.

Lastly, he touched on the I-35W project, which he said has been 20 years in the making. It will establish a MnPass lane in both directions from County Road C in Roseville all the way to Lexington Avenue in Blaine. “This is an example of many of our communities working together and a lot of persistence,” he said.

Centerville Paar introduced Statz, who became the city administrator/engineer back in November after former administrator Mike Ericson retired. “I think he has done a great job so far and he has already dived into a lot of things for a small city,” Paar said.

First up was Waterworks. The building was demolished in July and there is now a proposal before the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission for 18 detached townhomes in the $500,000 price range.

Paar added Peltier Estates, located at 7357 20th Ave. N., is also in the works. The development consists of mostly detached townhomes in the $350,000 and up price range.

Ruffridge Johnson Equipment Company’s purchase space in the city’s business park is also in the works. A new 19,000-square-foot building will be built on a 5-acre parcel of land located on the corner of Commerce Drive and 20th Avenue South.

Paar said the city recently received a request from Ruffridge Johnson for a 30-day extension; however, he said, the project is still moving forward. The hope is for construction to begin this April or May. Lastly, the city is in the process of rebranding itself and is looking at redesigning its logo, Music in the Park will begin in June and planning is already underway for this year’s Fete des Lacs celebration in July.

Statz noted the city is in need of volunteers to become engaged with their city by joining a commission. There are currently openings on the Parks and Recreation Committee, Planning and Zoning Commission and Economic Development Authority. There is also a need for election judges and volunteer fi refighters.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers investigated a threevehicle personal injury crash in the 800 block of Birch Street Feb. 20. Two people were transported by ambulance to the hospital and two vehicles were towed from the scene.

• An officer responded to a one-vehicle rollover in the 8100 block of Lake Drive Feb. 20. Officers treated one female for minor injuries, and the vehicle was removed from the ditch.

• Officers responded to a possible fire inside a garbage can of an unoccupied home in the 7900 block of Highland Drive Feb. 20. Upon arrival, officers found a dryer vent with steam exhausting near the garbage can, which was mistaken for smoke.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for speeding in the 8000 block of I-35E Feb. 21. An adult male was subsequently arrested for controlled substance DWI. • Officers responded to a request to assist another agency in the 7800 block of 20th Avenue Feb. 21. Officers ultimately arrested an adult male on an outstanding felony warrant, and the male was booked at the Anoka

County Jail.

• Officers were dispatched to assist a school with a juvenile that walked away from the property in the 7500 block of Fourth Avenue Feb. 22. The student was located and returned to the school. Ramsey County Child Protection was also advised of the incident.

• Officers responded to an open 911 call in Lino Lakes Feb. 22. After further investigation, one juvenile was arrested and booked into jail for domestic assault.

• An officer checked a vehicle that had spun into the median in the 1400 block of I-35W Feb. 23. There were no injuries and the vehicle had minor damage.

• A officer responded to a theft report in the 6400 block of Ware Road Feb. 23. The victim had a catalytic converter removed from his vehicle.

There is currently no suspect information and the investigation is ongoing.

• Officers responded to a call of a lift assist in the 100 block of Elm Street Feb. 23. A female had fallen out of her vehicle while getting her mail.

She was subsequently transported to the hospital for an evaluation

and her blood was drawn under suspicion of DWI. • An officer stopped a vehicle in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway Feb. 24 because the registered owner was not on record as having a valid driver's license. The driver had a valid out-of-state license and was advised to get a Minnesota driver's license.

• Officers responded to the report of a head-on collision involving two vehicles in the 6100 block of Centerville Road Feb. 24. Officers determined that a male driver appeared to be under the influence, and he was taken into custody for DUI. • An officer assisted the Centennial Lakes Police Department (CLPD) with a report of a vehicle fire in the 6900 block of Centerville Road Feb. 25. The vehicle was towed from the scene and evidence located at the scene was transferred to CLPD. • Officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of Baldwin Circle Feb. 25. While on scene, an officer located a male known to him who had an active felony warrant. The male attempted to hide from the officer, and another

male and female helped him hide.

The suspect was located and arrested. The male and female who assisted him were also arrested.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • Officers responded to a fire in an attached garage in the 7200 block of Mound Court in Centerville Feb. 22. Officers stood by to assist fire departments as needed.

• Police were summoned to the 7100 block of 21st Avenue in Centerville Feb. 23 on the report of a counterfeit bill.

• Officers responded to a domestic assault in Circle Pines Feb. 24. A male was arrested for the assault.

• Officers responded to Centerville Feb. 25 regarding a medical. It was later determined that the incident was a suicide.

• Officers were flagged down near the 6900 block of Centerville Road in Centerville for a vehicle fire. Officers put out the fire and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

WEATHER TIDBIT March began the month rather “lamb-like” with an opening week of 40º temperatures. Our snow cover took a beating as the warmer temperatures, ample sunshine and Sunday’s rain proved a worthy recipe for melting, as I’ve lost 10 inches of snow cover in the past week. In a rare proactive move, area schools closed on Monday, a day in advance, to avoid the January 22 snowfall mess that left many buses struggling to complete their afternoon routes. Guns-N-Hoses game raises more than $6,000

Firefighters and police officers teamed up to duel each other for a cause on Feb. 26. The teams played in the 2nd annual Guns-N-Hoses hockey game to raise money for the Regions Burns Center. About 400 people were in attendance at the Schwan Super Rink.
