Mission work recognized Waverly Gardens residents Deacon Jim and Henrietta Nistler recently returned to North Dakota to accept the 2016 Caritas Award for the Catholic Charities of North Dakota.

The Caritas Award is given annually to persons or organizations in recognition of outstanding services to humanity.

The definition of the term Caritas is “Christian love of mankind”. The Nistlers received the award in recognition of their work in establishing a mission in 1990 on behalf of the Bismark, North Dakota Catholic Diocese and their nine years of ministry among the people in Kenya, Africa.

The mission they started continues to serve the people of Kisii, Kenya area with humanitarian needs, including hundreds of AIDS orphans with food, shelter, education, and healthcare needs. It also offers others from the Bismark diocese opportunities to

While in mission, Jim assisted the local pastor with Sunday services, burials, and marriages and taught religion classes to high school students. Henrietta was instrumental in providing health care clinics, immunizations, and mother-child care in outlying areas. She also taught Home Science in the girls’ high school.

Together, the Nistlers prepared students for baptism and confirmation.

Since they had one of the few vehicles in the area, they were often called on to transport the sick or to bring a body back for home burial. They assisted with school fees, medical bills, and burial fees. They were able to provide food supplements during times of severe drought in their area.

The award ceremony was held on May 10 at the Spirit of Life Parish in Mandan, North Dakota with a

luncheon attended by Bishop John Floda of Fargo and Bishop David Kagan of Bismark, along with many family, friends and clergy.

Jim and Henrietta’s charitable ministry continues at Waverly Gardens, as they are involved with the Catholic Services and the Waverly Abiders Program. They often assist with Sunday evening bingo for the residents, visit with the residents in need, and are actively involved in creating items in the workshop for the Christmas Shoe Boxes for needy boys and girls overseas.

Locally, the St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Centerville is blessed to have the Nistlers participate in worship and social work in the community.

Well done, Jim and Henrietta! Our community thanks you!

Editor’s thoughts…….

There are days when I drive around this magnificent community I wonder what it must have been like in days gone by. In researching the history of North Oaks, I discovered this history of the Gilfillan purchase of the property in his quest to locate a water system for St. Paul. You will remember that at one time in his research, Lake Como was a source of water. That did not prove to be workable, and now the lakes in North Oaks provide that system with its water.

When I drive by the historical area I can visualize the farm building, the many different types and breeds of animals, and the acres of crops growing on what is now the streets of Hill Farm Circle. When I give tours to newcomers I suggest they close their eyes and look to the north and then to the south and remember the pictures of the James J Hill farm as contained in the history of North Oaks book “Three Bold Ventures.”

The research about the Home Owners Association was also insightful. The annual meeting was the social affair of the year with more than 90 percent of the association members present. The photos are of the original residents of North Oaks and most are smoking cigarettes and have a glass in their hands. No shorts, no cut offs, this was almost a formal affair. All were happy and satisfied in their new community where everybody knew everybody and sometimes what everybody was doing, who played bridge, what each other’s golf handicap was and where they ‘wintered’.

Mary and I spent the last two weeks in Colorado celebrating our 44th wedding anniversary and visiting our grandson and family. Son-in-law Michael asked if I knew the Manny Steil family because Manny Steil’s son was raised in North Oaks and is on the board of directors of

Also I noticed that the “Dr. of the Year Award” was presented to our neighbor Dr. Christopher Knoedler Sr. (He wasn’t a Sr. when I knew him). A personal note is that in 2001 I was in his office waiting for him (about five minutes only) to give me the news about an elevated PSA. Looking south from the third floor of the Professional Building on Beam Avenue is a sign on the building across the street that says CANCER CENTER. I thought that it was the end for me. Then Dr. Knoedler walked in and said “yes it should come out and it will probably lower your golf handicap.” Now 15 years later, all is still clear and handicap is four points lower. Congratulations on the recognition and thanks, Dr. Chris!

This month we will start a monthly column written by one of the best teaching golf professionals, our own Chris Bailey. He has been teaching golf at the North Oaks Golf Club for a number of years and has helped most of us lower our scores. You need not be a golf member to call him for a lesson.

POLICE REPORTS

North Oaks • A man came all the way from St. Anthony, Idaho to sell pest control to North Oaks residents. A woman on Hill Farm Circle called the sheriff ’s office June 20 and the solicitor, representing Aptive Environmental, was told in no uncertain terms to leave the area.

• A 44-year-old Falcon Heights fisherman was cited for trespassing June 24 on West Pleasant Lake Road.

• A deputy responded to a report of a loud party around 10 p.m. June 26 at the Pleasant Lake beach at Sandpiper Lane and Red Fox Road. A 19-year-old Coon Rapids woman was cited for disturbing the peace and for underage consumption of alcohol. A 44-year-old local man claimed he was hosting the party, “which got out of hand.”

Ah, summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Golf, tennis, boating, hiking, biking and tooling around the ‘hood in old cars. North Oaks is a great place to live and I feel fortunate to be here.

With bikers, walkers, motorcyclists and cruising cars on our streets it is a good time to take a look at your property, especially on corners of roads. Is the sight line clear for people coming and going? Can you see kids on bikes as they approach intersections? The City’s Operation Clear View is intended to keep us all safe by keeping roadway sightlines clear to all residents whether they are on foot, bikes or motor vehicles. If you can’t see a car coming, it is likely that they can’t see you.

So please, keep your vegetation cut back from all roadways, especially at intersections. With plants all in full growth mode, it is a good time to take a look and make changes. An FYI; the City is going to hold another brush pickup day in the fall so that you have a way to get rid of the clippings.

If you did not see the most recent City Council meeting, I would like you to know that we have met with the Ramsey County Mosquito Control District to see what they could tell us about the Zika virus in Minnesota. Their experts have seen no signs of mosquito-borne illness yet but are keeping a close eye on mosquitoes in our state (not too

MIKE EGELSTON tough to find them here). We also talked about tick control, but that is not in their purview. The City will be continuing to deal with the deer population and other small mammals as well, in an attempt to reduce the incidence of Lyme disease in our community. I would remind you that brush piles and heavy undergrowth are wonderful tick environments and should be eliminated. Appropriate insect repellent and clothing is important in limiting your personal exposure to ticks in the area.

NOHOA, for their part have been treating recreational areas and trails to help reduce the tick population as well.

Attack of the Water Weed By the Natural Resources Commission It wraps around your legs! It tangles up your canoe paddle! It clogs up the waterways! It sounds like a horror movie, but it's actually hornwort, also known as coontail.

Often confused with milfoil, this common aquatic plant is native to Minnesota. It provides cover for fish, food for waterfowl, and houses insects that fish and ducklings like to eat.

Nevertheless, ess, flotillas of this plant can be a huge nuisance to water navigation.

Coontail does not produce roots; instead it absorbs all the nutrients it requires from the surrounding water. Overabundant growth of this plant is a symptom of too much phosphorus and nitrogen in the water.

In North Oaks, these nutrients may come from your septic systems and lawns. Control of coontail is best accomplished by reducing fertilizer applications near the water, making sure your septic system is working properly, redirecting nutrient-rich runoff away from the lake, and maintaining shoreline vegetation.

Volunteers – we couldn’t do it without you

By Ann Christiansen There is a special group of volunteers at the North Oaks Guild II Rummage Sale that “comes to the rescue” each year.

Hands and Hearts from Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview are volunteers who provide service to a number of organizations in the surrounding area.

Each year a group of 10 to 15 volunteers from Incarnation help sort donations for the sale.

They also provide lunches for other volunteers who are working to make the sale a success. Without groups like Hands and Hearts, the sale would never open its doors on schedule.

Volunteering at the sale is often a family affair. Take the Michael Skaalerud family of Anoka for example.

There is excitement in

the air as Michael, his wife Lisa, daughter Abby and son Anders help unload donations dropped off the Saturday before the September sale.

Michael and his family are not only enthusiastic volunteers but also savvy shoppers.

Each year they set a family budget and allow a “good chunk of change” to spend at the annual North Oaks Guild II Rummage Sale. In 2015, Michael paid $150 for a high-end bike originally valued at $800. (The bike had also been tuned up for the sale, thanks to folks from Hed Cycling Products USA – less expensive bikes are also in abundance at the sale).

Others in the family were equally delighted with their purchases; daughters Allie and Abby shop for most of their school attire at the sale and have introduced

many friends to the sale after getting compliments on their great wardrobes.

The week following donation Saturday is a whirl of activity, cleaning, sorting and arranging displays of donated items in preparation for the sale. The guild would never be ready for the sale if not for many faithful volunteers who return to support this important event each year. In 2015, several local employers provided employees with teambuilding days – working to help sort the many donations – among them Deluxe Corporation. The teams had a fun day and provided indispensable help during this busy week.

Many individuals also provide volunteer services and make the annual Rummage Sale a success. Husbands and other family members,

cousins, nieces and nephews, in-laws and shirt-tale relatives are all essential to efficiently handle the donations and run the weekend sale.

After the sale each fall, a list of groups, businesses and organizations that have provided support to the North Oaks Guild II Rummage Sale is published in North Oaks News. Our thanks to each and every one never seems adequate.

North Oaks Guild II is one of 11 St. Paul area guilds that support Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) by raising funds for programs that fall outside the traditional budget of Children’s.Over the years North Oaks II has donated over $1.7 million to CHA.

North Oaks resident receives Distinguished Citizen Award Darrel Gubrud of North Oaks has received the Distinguished Citizen Award from Macalester College.

The Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes alumni who have exercised leadership in civic, social, religious and professional activities. It is given because the Alumni Association, the Board of Trustees and the faculty of Macalester believe that a college education should be the training and inspiration for unselfish and effective service to the community, the nation and the world. Recipients demonstrate a practical acceptance of these obligations in their lives and work.

“What are you doing to make the world a better place?” Gubrud thought often about that question at Macalester, and it still guides him decades later. During that

time, Gubrud has shaped information technology in Minnesota and beyond. A business administration major, Gubrud thrived at Macalester thanks to opportunities to learn by doing. He sold ads as The Mac Weekly’s busi— Submitted Darrel Gubrud ness manager, led the Toastmasters Club’s revitalization, and was vice president of the student governing body.

Those lessons in taking action served

him well after college, beginning in his first job at IBM. An early adopter and entrepreneur, Gubrud was CEO or general manager of five IT-related firms, including three start-ups. He also worked in other senior executive roles throughout his career, including Blue Cross Blue Shield. In 1997 he founded Gubrud Consulting, where he continues advising early stage technology companies. Gubrud delved into nanotechnology in 2006, when he co-founded MN NANO with the dean of the University of Minnesota’s College of Science and Engineering and others. MN NANO fostered connections among academic institutions and local industry for nanotechnology research and development.

“My overriding interest is in how Minnesota can grow and prosper, and

nanotechnology is one way to help maintain the state’s competitive edge,” Gubrud said. Passionate about public policy and community involvement, Gubrud is an engaged citizen, having served on Macalester’s Alumni Board and his 50th Reunion committee. He’s a leader in the House of Hope Presbyterian Church and active in numerous civic organizations. True to the question that guided him as a student, Gubrud has strengthened the world around him in many ways. Writes one of six nominators, “Darrel has had an amazing career in innovation, entrepreneurship, expanding technology, and advancement of information technology. He is a model of creative activity.”

NOHOA NEWS How does the NOHOA Strategic Plan relate to you, the members, and how does it guide the Board of Directors in their actions?

In May of 2016, the Board of Directors was called upon to make decisions regarding the recommendations made by the Tick Task Force. Those recommendations included removal of brush, which was identified as potential habitat for the black-legged tick, on NOHOA recreational properties. Step one in the

Board’s decisionmaking process involved looking at the Strategic Plan and the strategies in the plan that addressed issues such as tickborne illnesses.

Step one was completed easily as the need to address this issue was clearly identified in the Strategic Plan as one way that NOHOA strives to respond to the membership’s needs for information and action.

Goal: Community – Inform, engage and serve NOHOA membership through highquality programs and services.

Strategies: Be a resource for members.

Collaborate with community partners to address health and safety issues within North Oaks, e.g. tickborne diseases and road safety.

Once the responsibility to respond had been identified, the Board of Directors was able to define the actions to be taken. In depth research and conversations with the Tick Task Force and tick specialists informed the Directors on how and when to use pesticides most effectively while minimizing disruption to the natural environment.

In June, the first treatment with pesticides was applied on targeted areas of NOHOA recreational properties. Since then, a second treatment has been applied with two more applications scheduled for August and September.

Additionally, with the generosity of the North Oaks Golf Club grounds crew, providing a team of workers in mid-July, buckthorn was removed from areas at the West Rec that had been identified as black-legged tick habitats.

Finally, over the course of the summer, Mel’s Services are removing similar brush

patches from recreation areas in an ongoing effort to reduce habitat for mice and ticks to hide and proliferate.

Every day and in positive ways, the NOHOA Board of Directors is working to respond appropriately and with the necessary due diligence to problems in the community.

With the aid of the Strategic Plan, the Directors can move forward, knowing that their actions are part of the larger, long-term thinking that has been put in place to protect and enhance North Oaks for its members.

When is aging old?

In March of this year, I began the eighth decade of my life. The reality of aging is coming clear. Aches and pains are more noticeable and visits to all types of medical people seem to be a part of every week.

I am thankful to be alive, the new knees are working well and I can be in the office every day that I am in White Bear Lake.

There are a lot of people joining this aging fraternity and all you have to do is look around our communities and you will see the many senior facilities available or under construction.

At the last visit to the family doctor, he asked me, “What does Kathy want Gene Johnson you to ask me?� I said we talk a lot about our health at home and sometimes she joins me at the doctor’s office with her iPad to keep good notes. I said, “Okay, doc, what is it that most women want their husbands to ask?� He said it’s about eyesight, hearing and memory.

The conversation continued as I said, “I get regular or somewhat regular exams for my eyes. I have hearing aids and they have been adjusted just a month ago, but what’s this thing about memory? I know we both forget things, especially names, and help each other with that and other delayed recalls.�

He said, “Let me explain it this way. If you lose your keys sometimes, don’t worry about it. But when you find your keys and don’t know what they are for, then you’ve got a problem.�

I have been told over the years to take time to smell the roses along the way. Now they tell me smell fresh rosemary because that improves memory. Bitters, by the way, are very helpful to the immune system.

We are very fortunate in Minnesota with the quality of our medical care and services. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester and the University of Minnesota are major contributors to these high standards.

Another reality of aging that has set in is friends and family members who have taken ill and several have died.

It seems like we have to buy our sympathy cards in bulk.

An enjoyable part of this time of life is coffee groups throughout the community. Sometimes it’s not just an hour in the morning, but they can go all the way up to three hours. I never thought that would happen. It’s enjoyable if you can get people away from talking about their aches, pains and medical procedures.

I think the bottom line to all of this is stay active, eat healthy, maintain friendships and have a purpose.

And above all, don’t do anything in excess and remember total abstinence should be in moderation.

IN THE SPRINGTIME the shrubs and trees fill out with leaves and a number of blind street corners become evident. For safety, these should be trimmed back or called to the attention of your respective city. Anything we can do in advance to eliminate accidents is worthwhile.

IT’S VERY DISCOURAGING to see only catch and release of walleyes for Mille Lacs Lake. This sends anglers off to other Minnesota lakes. Resort owners, boat rentals and all that relates to tourism and the fishing industry in and around Mille Lacs Lake suffers. Minnesota DNR, I think you ought to restrategize and seek alternate decisions about this major body of water that will have less adverse economic impact.

There may not be easy decisions or solutions because of the history behind it. Our Native American community has rights to netting fish for their economic benefit. While there are other fish available to catch, Minnesota’s walleye is the favorite attraction. They are delicious right from the lake to the fry pan to the dinner plate.

Roses in Waverly Gardens

By Dick Leonard Editor By the time you read this article the hybrid roses have awakened from their summer sleep. First a group of about 10 volunteers spend a day in late April carefully removing the topsoil and gently lifting the 98 bushes into an upright position.

For the next couple of weeks, another team of Waverly volunteers keep the rose stems moist by watering two or three times a day.

Once the bushes begin to leaf, they turn on the automatic irrigation.

During the last week of May the ‘rose crew’ began to prepare the southwest quad and planted 50 new shrub rose bushes.

garden was completely redone, a process that began three years ago.

In the middle of June, and continuing throughout the summer another team of volunteers spend the summer-long task of deadheading, debugging, weeding, fertilizing and spraying all 200 rose bushes.

This all started in April when the ‘rose crew’ had its first meeting of those interested in working on the roses. To date, 27 Waverly Garden residents and four persons from neighboring communities, have joined the Rose Crew. And the result of all this labor is a stunning array of red, white and pink roses of every type and kind available that grow in this Minnesota climate. Some who have watched this garden develop

call it "stunning" and "beautiful", and something that nearly matches the Como Park Conservatory in St Paul. And the best part of it is that it's right outside the windows and doors of over 150 residents at Waverly to enjoy. But please don’t pick them!

All of this is the result of the organizational talent and rose knowledge of the ‘chief gardener’ Bob Cuthill who schedules the workers and oversees the progress of the roses continually to bring joy and delight to the residents, workers and visitors at Waverly Gardens.

There is one other joy: Watching and listening to the ‘rose crew’ as they continue their daily chores and hold their heads up high because of the fine work they have done.

constant issue. If you feel that you are not making as many putts as you should, it is important for you to keep your basics in good working order.

So what are these basics that we speak of ? Well,

let’s start with the grip.

There are all sorts of ways to hold the putter.

Just look at the TV when the Olympics, PGA Championship or Ryder Cup is on. You will see traditional, left hand low, claw or pencil grips, even players trapping the grip or shaft against their forearm. There are lots of styles to holding a putter that can work for you! If you are struggling, why not try something new?

A different pathway may alleviate some of the anxiety you feel over a tricky 4-footer (or even

an easy 2-footer that your playing partners won’t give you anymore). One thing that is important when it comes to your grip is your grip pressure. In order for you to keep a consistent rhythm, make sure that you are gripping your putter lightly.

The next basic to keep an eye on your ball position. The ball should be slightly forward of your belly button or sternum as it relates to front and back. It should also be directly under your eyes. It is a fairly

common flaw for players to get the ball too far away from their feet. This makes it difficult to aim accurately, arc the putter properly and make solid impact. A simple check is to get into your putting stance and drop a second golf ball from the bridge of your nose. It should land on the golf ball you are addressing. If it does not land on the golf ball, you will need to adjust your setup or change the ball position.

The final fundamental of good putting is making sure that

your body and head remain still. The only thing moving in a good putting stroke is your arms and shoulders. If you have excess motion in your body or wrists, it will be hard to control the distance your putt travels. This will lead to poor proximity to the hole on your approach putts and too many three putts.

NOTEWORTHY NOHOA NEWS On Tuesday, July 12, the NOHOA Board of Directors held one of its quarterly planning workshops. The following identifies the highlights of that meeting: • The Directors had their first look at the 2017 budget. Over the next four months, the information will be analyzed further and edited with the final budget prepared for presentation to the membership in November 2016.

• Updates to the Bylaws were discussed, clarifying terms of office for Directors, the addition of Charley Lake Preserve to the NOHOA boundaries and other items.

• Ideas were shared to enhance NOHOA strategies for welcoming new members.

• A proposal for Pleasant Lake

shoreline restoration in the area near the Hill Farm historical site was approved.

• A proposal to obtain suggestions from a design consultant for alternatives to the existing entrance structures, was approved.

• An update on the work of the Parks and Recreation Committee was given.

Beach opening and closing – expanded hours The Pleasant Lake Beach opened for use with lifeguards on duty seven days per week from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Family fun day is scheduled for Aug. 12 with games for children and their parents. Families are invited to bring their dinner and NOHOA will provide the s’mores. No registration is necessary.

From Aug. 22 through Sept. 5, the lifeguards will be working a reduced schedule. Please check for the

“lifeguard on duty” sign when using the beach during that two-week period.

Summer Hours The NOHOA office observes summer hours until Sept. 6. Those hours are Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Fridays 8:30 AM until Noon.

Board Openings for 2017 NOHOA is now accepting applications for new Directors in 2017.

Any member who has lived in North Oaks for two years or more is welcome to apply. Selection of Directors for 2017 will be by election in late November.

Motorized vehicle reminder NOHOA is reminding all residents that no motorized vehicles are to be used on any of the NOHOA trails.

Motorcycles, mini-bikes, ATVs of all sizes, golf carts, motorized skateboards, etc. are all prohibited.

Bicycles are allowed. Please help NOHOA protect our trail surfaces by using them responsibly.

Prevention is the Key The best method for avoiding tickborne diseases is through prevention. Wearing light colored clothing, tucking your pants into your socks, using insect repellents, and performing tick checks after outdoor activities are examples of positive prevention tactics.

North Oaks Preschool welcomes new teacher

North Oaks resident Julie Heiden will soon be stepping into her new role as preschool teacher at the North Oaks Preschool. She will join veteran teacher Kathy Austin in welcoming a new class of preschoolers into the 2016-17 school year. Julie brings with her many years of early childhood teaching experience, strong community connections and enthusiasm for the unique structure of the parent-run cooperative preschool.

“Having the parent-run cooperative approach is so unique to North Oaks Preschool. It recognizes parents as the most important teacher for their young children. Parents are able to gain greater understanding of their own child through active participation in the classroom. Working together, parents and teachers create a nurturing, safe, and stimulating preschool where each child can flourish,” she said.

When asked what she is most looking forward to in her new position, Julie replied, “I’m looking forward to working with children at the very beginning of their educational journey. It’s such a joy to help them understand some of the most foundational academic, social, and emotional concepts that they will use for the rest of their lives.”

1860’s Vintage Base Ball is baseball played by rules and customs from an earlier period in the sport’s history. The game’s name is typically written “base ball” rather than “baseball,” as that was the spelling used before the 1880s.

The ball of the 1860s was a bit larger, heavier and softer than the modern baseball.

BASE BALL RULES (Subject to change at the Judge’s discretion before the game begins) There shall be: • No bunting, sliding or running out of the base path; No

uncivil language, spitting, alcohol consumption, chewing of tobacco, wagering; The ball is delivered underhand in a shallow arc to allow good striking.

• Fielders play the following positions until the hurled ball has crossed home.

• 1st , 2nd and 3rd basemen play on or within one foot of their respective bags; Short scout (shortstop) can position himself anywhere on the playing field; Behind (catcher) plays not more than 45 feet behind home base; Left, middle and right scouts (outfielders) play in the middle of their respective outfields.

A striker (batter) is dead (out) when: • A batted ball is caught on the fly, fair or foul; A batted ball is caught on one bound, fair or foul; Three hurled balls are swung at and missed. A base runner is dead (out) when: Forced out at base; Tagged out; Runs three feet or more out of the base path.

Other rules: • Foul ticks (balls) are not considered strikes; • When fielding, the ball must be caught with the HANDS gloves, hats, or other items may not be used; • The Judge’s (umpire’s) determination if a batted ball is fair or foul is made by where the ball first hits the ground; • A base runner may advance at his own risk when a batted ball is caught on one bound, but must return to base on those caught in the air; • A base runner can lead off at his own risk and steal if the behind (catcher) muffs the ball (makes an error); • All disputes are arbitrated by the team captains and the Judge (umpire).

Local teen aerialist performs in “Wonderland” circus

By Noor Qureishy Press Intern SHOREVIEW – The wondrous feeling of soaring above a crowd and drifting through open air drives 14-year-old circus performer Lindsey Johnson's passion for circus.

Johnson will be part of Circus Juventas' annual summer production, “Wonderland,” under its big top from July 28 to Aug. 14 in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul. This year's performance of “Wonderland” is meant to honor the 150th year of Lewis Carroll's timeless novel, “Alice in Wonderland” with a compelling mix of theater, circus, and dance.

Johnson has been a part of Circus Juventas, an internationally known youth circus, since she was eight years old. After trying figure skating and gymnastics, she fell in love with the way performing in a circus made her feel.

“I took a summer camp in circus and there was no better feeling for me than to be off the ground and in the air,” Johnson said. “Performing is really amazing to me.

There's so much adrenaline going on when you're performing, and having a crowd there makes you work that much harder.”

Although “Wonderland” will be Johnson's first summer show, she has performed in other productions with Circus Juventas over the last six years. Her most recent performance was in the last spring show

with a theme of love and friendship.

In order to participate in the physically demanding elements of circus, Johnson has to practice regularly.

“We get a lot of exercise from all of our classes because [circus] takes a lot of strength and stamina,” she said.

Johnson credits her involvement in circus for much of her personal development.

“In circus I learned confidence, trust, teamwork and perseverance. All of those [qualities] put together make a really well-rounded performer and I really love performing,” she said.

In “Wonderland,” Johnson's theater character is a flamingo from the iconic “Alice in Wonderland” croquet scene with the Queen of Hearts. She will also play a caterpillar in the Spanish web aerial scene and a chess piece in the Ballet Pointe scene.

Aerials, circus acts that are conducted up in the air, are Johnson's favorite.

“If I could I would really love to be a professional aerialist,” she said.

Johnson believes Circus Juventas' re-imagining of the classic, “Alice in Wonderland” as a circus performance piece will resonate with and entertain audience members. “'Alice in Wonderland' is just a really fun, crazy, and wacky storyline...[by adding circus], you can make it as cool and crazy as you want to fit with your storyline,” she said. “You can portray a lot of different

emotions [with circus], so say acrobatics could be in more intense scenes and aerials could be in more fun, sad, slower or faster scenes.”

North Oaks Parks & Recreation Committee update

By Debra Hjortland The North Oaks open spaces, trails and natural resources define the unique character of our North Oaks community, and maintaining the quality of these assets is essential to sustaining our quality of life. The Park and Recreation Committee, appointed by the Board of Directors of the North Oaks Home Owners Association (NOHOA), has been making excellent progress in coming up with a number of exciting ideas for improving North Oaks parks, trails and recreational opportunities for our residents.

Our intent is to share these ideas with North Oaks residents to get community views and priorities so that they can be developed into formal recommendations and brought to the NOHOA Board of Directors for approval – hopefully in late 2016. I’ll describe a few of our top ideas here and how we intend to solicit community feedback as we work to finalize our recommendations.

First, a little background on the Committee: In June, 2015, the NOHOA Board of Directors appointed 11 community members to look at existing parks, trails and open space properties. Chaired

by Greg Mack and meeting regularly, the Committee looked at all NOHOA recreational properties and began to identify needed improvements that in total, are designed to serve the diverse recreational needs of current and future North Oaks residents, young and old.

Improvements have been identified for most of the NOHOA properties. The complete set of preliminary recommendations for each site is posted on the NOHOA website (NOHOA.org) and will be distributed to residents in a NOHOA broadcast message. The Committee’s top three recommendations that will involve capital improvement expenditures are: • Install a Splash Pad (a non-pool water feature for children) in the East Recreation Center • Irrigate and rehabilitate

The next step is to solicit community views on these ideas before they are forwarded to the NOHOA Board of Directors. The Committee plans to hold a Town Hall event on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the West Recreation Center Community room. All interested residents are invited to attend to learn more about the potential recommendations and to share their views about them with the Committee.

Archaeologists unearth ancient artifacts

By Sara Marie Moore Vadnais Heights Editor A group of local avocational archaeologists aim to unearth artifacts along the shores of Vadnais Lake this summer.

A group of residents who found American Indian artifacts along Lake Wabasso in Shoreview have received a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society through the Shoreview Historical Society, to extend their search for artifacts to the shores of Vadnais Lake this summer.

“We conducted a dig last year on Lake Wabasso and we found three artifacts there,” said John Vadnais, a member of the North Lake Owasso Neighborhood Group (NLONG), an interest group for local archaeological digs. Lake Wabasso is half a mile from Lake Vadnais, on the west side of Rice Street and south of I-694.

The artifacts found on the west shore of Lake Wabasso were sherds about the size of dimes, which looked like parts of American Indian bowls.

Professional archaeologist Jeremy Nienow, an expert on Dakota, Sioux and Woodland Indian artifacts, joined NLONG for the dig and examined the sherds to determine whether they were in fact remnants from Native Americans who had lived in the area. The sherds were dated to between 1,500 and 500 A.D. Nienow attributed them to Woodland Indians, who lived in small family groups, not tribes.

The older artifacts are, the more likely they were from Woodland Indians, since tribal affiliations seem to have developed in the last few hundred years.

NLONG became interested in exploring for more artifacts along Vadnais Lake because it is a large area of undisturbed soil. The group hopes they will find more artifacts, especially considering they found artifacts in the nearby Lake Wabasso area where soil had been turned over to build houses and roads.

The soil along Lake Vadnais has been undisturbed for at least 100 years. “[The soil] is pretty much virgin, and we said, ‘Well, maybe there is something there,’” said Vadnais.

“We are cautiously optimistic we will find something. As far as we know, in Ramsey County this could be the last undisturbed soil left.”

The survey will be conducted mainly on the north side of the lake, where Indians often chose to live because it faces the sun.

“They would go about 25 to 50 feet from the water,” he said.

The survey this summer will explore eight different sites for possible digging. During the initial survey this summer, held July 9-10, a 10-inch diameter, 10inch deep hole was dug at each site. The soil is put on a screener and sifted. The dig will continue July 30-31.

“Depending on what we find,

then we would possibly come back next year and do additional studies,” said Vadnais. A complete dig would be held if artifacts are found. Only the top 10-12 inches of topsoil would likely contain artifacts, said Vadnais, since it has been about 10,000 years since glaciers receded from the area. NLONG will also look for European American artifacts.

An inspiring arrowhead NLONG formed when Vadnais and several neighbors started chatting about an American Indian arrowhead found in the neighborhood. The neighbors became curious about those who had lived in the area before them and reached out to the Ramsey County Historical Society for grant money to conduct an archeological dig in their neighborhood on the shores of Lake Wabasso.

NLONG is interested in learning more about the Woodland Indians who lived in central Ramsey County, and why it appears tribal Indians did not live there. Vadnais said tribal artifacts from the Dakota, Sioux, and Ojibwe have been found in the outer areas of Ramsey County, but only Woodland Indian artifacts have been found in the central part of the county.

The Woodland Indians were made of up small family groups, and families had their own dialects, food and beliefs.

“We are trying to figure out what types of people were there,” said Vadnais. “What kind of people lived around Vadnais Lake? That is what we are going after.”

Vadnais wonders if they will find tribal artifacts or more Woodland Indian artifacts.

Two stories have circulated in his family about how it was named after him – one being a surveyor who asked whose lake it was and Jean said “Mine.” Another is that Jean was the first to officially claim the property. In 1850 the lake was designated for drinking water and

Vadnais was forced off the land.

By the way, Vadnais said the Norwegians and Swedes who lived around Vadnais pronounced it wrong and it’s been wrong for 150 years – It is Vad-nay. The s is silent and the ai is long, because it is French, of course.

The archeological surveys are open to the public. Participants can try their hand at digging for artifacts. A donation of $10 is suggested. Youth ages 14 to 18 can dig for free. The next dig will be held from 9 to 3 p.m. July 30 and 31. Additional digs may be held in August or September. For more information on joining a dig,

The $9,750 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to conduct the survey was one of 69 grants totaling $456,396 given to recipients across Minnesota this spring. Grants are awarded quarterly to organizations dedicated to preserving and sharing Minnesota history. The grants are made possible through the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, voted for by Minnesotans in 2008.

Deputy Burrell’s report After a month on duty patrolling the streets of North Oaks, Sheriff ’s Deputy Mike Burrell gave his first official report to council members.

The most frequent calls for service are false alarms and medical calls. However, there have been several people ticketed for trespassing and fishing on the lakes, as well as a few speeding tickets. The speed limit in North Oaks is 30 mph.

Officer Burrell noted there have been a few issues with dogs running around unleashed and reminded residents that dogs should be licensed with the city and have tags.

A party at Pleasant Lake beach led to several people being cited for underage drinking. A North Oaks resident who hosted the party was cited, as well.

Burrell also reported that he has met many North Oaks residents while patrolling our neighborhoods and all have welcomed him into the community and thanked him for his service.

DNR offers advice for dealing with storm-damaged trees

Cleanup following a storm can be an overwhelming task for homeowners. Knowing which trees to save and which

to remove can impact safety and the survival of remaining trees, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural

Resources.

DNR Forestry Outreach Specialist Jennifer Teegarden offers the following tips.

Do: • Approach damaged trees with caution. Stay clear of downed wires and call 911.

• Carefully inspect standing trees for damage and deal with hazardous trees first. If possible, ask a forester or arborist for advice.

• Trees should be removed if more than 50 percent of the trunk or live branches in the crown are damaged, and if the tree is unnaturally leaning or roots are damaged.

• Watch for detached branches, loosely hanging branches and split or cracked trunks that can cause injury or further damage.

• Use proper pruning techniques to remove broken limbs by cutting just outside the branch collar, but limit pruning to making the tree safe. Too much pruning can weaken an already stressed tree.

• Water stressed and damaged trees weekly to help them repair and rebuild.

Be careful not to overwater, especially in heavy clay soils.

• Monitor damaged trees in upcoming years to make sure they don’t become a hazard.

Don’t: • Be rushed by promises of bargains from inexperienced or unqualified tree service providers.

Improper pruning or unneeded removal can result in unnecessary costs or loss of healthy trees.

Ask for references and proof of insurance.

• Repair a broken branch or fork of a tree with tape, wire, bolts or other wraps. It will not heal, and the split will invite decay and further weaken the tree. Cabling or bracing should only be performed by a certified arborist and inspected annually.

• Remove the tops of trees.

This makes the tree more susceptible to insects and disease, and results in new branches that are weakly attached.

• Apply paint or dressing to wounds as these materials interfere with the natural wound sealing process.

• Remove small, leaning trees. Trees less than 15 feet tall may survive if they are gently pulled back into place. Press out air spaces in the loosened soil. The tree can then be staked for up to a year.
