Letter from the Manitou Days Chairman Welcome, everyone, to Manitou Days 2021! The theme for Manitou Days 2021 is “Bears Together.” It was chosen to represent all of us working together to survive COVID-19. Manitou Days 2021 is a little different this year as we transition back to “normal.” Instead of a mid-June Bill Wiegel kick-off ending with Fourth of July fireworks, this year Manitou Days starts on the weekend of July 4. Thursday, July 1, will be the first of six Marketfest celebrations. Marketfest will run 6-9 p.m. each Thursday through Aug. 5. It will feature two stages with live music, antique car show, weekly special events, food vendors and a variety other vendors. Check MarketFestwbl.com for more info. Friday, July 2, will be the Grand Manitou Days Parade. The parade will begin near the library at 6:30 p.m., wind through downtown and north on Lake Avenue, ending at Memorial Park. The parade will be recorded by Suburban Community Channels and replayed on Channel 19. The Rotary of WBL and Explore White Bear Lake will host the annual Beach Dance at Memorial Park after the parade. The Beach Dance will feature live music by “Free and Easy.” Tickets are $10 in advance, $14 at the gate. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. The dance runs 8 – 11 p.m. The Medallion Hunt begins on July 1 with clues posted daily on manitoudays.com. The cash prize of $1,000 is sponsored by Coldwell Banker. On Sunday, July 4, the fireworks will be launched from the lake by Memorial Park. The first rocket will be fired just after dusk. The Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band will play live music in the pavilion starting at 8 p.m. There will also be a vintage airplane fly-over before the fireworks. Message from the Mayor Happy Manitou Days! Over the past year we have faced many challenges both personally and as a community. As we look ahead to brighter days it seems fitting that the theme for this year’s Manitou Days festival is “Bears Together.” As we have seen time and time again, we are better when we work together. Jo Emerson I am grateful to the committee and countless volunteers who have spent months working together to plan and adjust to make this festival happen. We hope you enjoy some of the fun events including the Medallion Hunt, the ever popular Beach Dance, the Fourth of July fireworks and of course, the Grande Parade on Friday, July 2. Director’s note IT’S HAPPENING!!!! Marketfest is celebrating its 30th year (again, since last year was canceled.) We hope you will join us for the official kickoff to summer events in the White Bear Lake community! Marketfest runs Thursdays, July 1 to Aug. 5, from 6-9 p.m. in historic downtown White Bear Lake. Explore and experience local vendors, nonprofits, and Lisa Beecroft downtown businesses, as well as games, activities and demonstrations for kids and adults alike. With more than 160 food, merchandise/service booths, nonprofits and downtown businesses participating - there is truly something for everyone at Marketfest. Each week we feature live music on two stages – the Kowalski’s Gazebo Stage on Washington Avenue and the White Bear Mitsubishi 3rd Street Stage in the back lot. Twelve bands will perform this summer, many with ties to White Bear Lake area, which makes their performances extra special. This year’s returning favorites include: Jake Nelson, The Castaways, Salsa de Sol, Ember Island, Brio Brass Band, Kinda Fonda Wonda and Bare Bones Band. We also welcome newcomers: Function Junction, Scary Numan, Whisky Stone, Helium for Liftoff and Pete Kavanaugh in joining Marketfest for the first time. Grab a chair (or bring your own) and enjoy the music and a scrumptious bite to eat from one of our local restaurants or many food vendors. In the Washington Square Dental Kids Activity Zone we have kidfriendly favorites including a climbing wall, inflatables, Eurobungy trampolines, and carnival games hosted by local organizations. There will even be a dunk tank on July 8, where you can “Dunk the Dentist, with a guest appearance by the White Bear Mitsubishi Bear. New this year on Third Street in front of Premier Bank are pony rides, sponsored by Timberline Roofing and Construction. Additionally, our weekly classic Car Show at 4th Street between Banning Avenue and Cook Avenue is always a hit, with Hot Rod Muscle Cars making a special appearance. Chalk your logo during Manitou Days By Caden Christiansen A local White Bear CEO has created a new event during Manitou Days that is connecting consumers with local businesses. As White Bear Lake’s famous Manitou Days quickly approaches, community members can take part in a new event this year. The Chalk My Logo event, created by White Bear marketing agency, Nimble Impressions, CEO Alan Haskins, will take place throughout the entirety of Manitou Days. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, Haskins took action to help promote small businesses in the White Bear community by creating RallyWBA. With many small businesses struggling mightily during the last year and a half, RallyWBA became a way

for consumers and businesses to connect with each other through fun local events. The Chalk My Logo event is a continuation of these efforts made by Haskins, and will continue to help small businesses market themselves in new ways during Manitou Days. “With RallyWBA I am always trying to connect consumers with businesses,” said Haskins. “But we are doing it in a fun way where people don’t feel marketed to.” The Chalk My Logo event will encourage community members to draw the logos of the 12 participating local businesses. Participants can upload pictures of their illustrations to the RallyWBA Facebook group page and tag the business they have chosen to draw. This can be done from

Dates and times for chalking at local destinations will be communicated through the RallyWBA Facebook page and all community members are encouraged to join in on the fun. The 12 participating local businesses have each offered up their own unique prizes for their favorite logo designs and will be announcing the winners at the conclusion of Manitou Days. “I hope this creates a new way to connect,” said Haskins. “Hopefully we can take a successful year one and keep that going into year two.”

As the end of the school year quickly M approached, McKenna’s class was interrupted by a front emp office employee delivering surprising news. “I was so surprised that I won and I was very excit excited,” McKenna said. “A lot of my classmates hug hugged me and said congratulations.” T rest of the DesJardins family felt a The s similar sense of amazement after awaiting the announcement from the Manitou Days Committee. “We were surprised for sure,” Jamie said. “The hard part was that they told us first and we had to keep it a secret over the weekend until the school made the announcement.” When McKenna isn’t winning button design contests, she enjoys writing poems, sketching, playing volleyball and golf and is a member of the Girl Scouts. As the winner, McKenna will be awarded 1,200 buttons with her name on them to be passed out during the Grand Parade, 50 buttons with her “Bears Together” design on them for friends and family, a plaque with her button on it, a pizza party and a $100 cash prize. Runner up Amari will also be awarded a plaque with his button on it, a bag of 50 buttons with his design and a $25 cash prize. The contest has been sponsored by Ken Peterson of Johnson Peterson Funeral Home for over 30 years.

By Caden Christansen The Manitou Days Committee announced that hat the n is winner of the 2021 button design competition ati McKenna DesJardins, a fifth-grader at Frassati Catholic Academy. McKenna is the daughter of Matt and Jamie DesJardins and sister of Haley DesJardins. The runner up was Amari Evans, a fourthgrader at Willow Lane Elementary School. Every year, the Manitou Days Committee hosts a contest that allows for students of White Bear Lake Area Schools grades K-5 to enter a design that illustrates the festival’s theme. With this year’s theme being “Bears Together,” McKenna drew inspiration for her drawing from the brave men and women who have worked so hard to keep people in her community safe after a year filled with tragedy. Her drawing depicts three bears representing nurses, police officers and firefighters all joining paws with blue and red hearts between them. “It has been a hard year and I know that most of the police and firefighters and medical people have been helping us out a lot in these rough times, so I was thinking about that,” McKenna said. McKenna was one of 100 applicants to enter this year’s button contest. After hearing about the contest from a teacher at school, she decided to enter because

By Debra Neutkens A philanthropic couple who would rather be behind the scenes than on stage are this year’s Manitou Days Grand Marshals. Paul and Suzanne Hanifl don’t reside in White Bear Lake, but consider the community their adopted home after leaving Chicago for North Oaks in 2019. They are a socially and environmentally SUBMITTED conscious pair who believe their Sharon Hanifl-Lee, left, and her parents Paul and Suzanne Hanifl at the Performing business success should be shared. Arts Center named for their foundation. The name Hanifl should be familiar to people who patronize the city’s arts district. The couple’s oldest daughter, Sharon Hanifl-Lee, is board chair of Children’s Performing Arts (CPA), which is based in the Hanifl Performing Arts Center in White Bear Lake. Sharon, they said, is the “face of the family.” Their daughter is quite a workhorse when it comes to youth theater

and charitable work, according to the Hanifls. She helped launch More Than Meals last winter from the Hanifl Performing Arts parking lot after an anonymous couple donated more than $250,000 to help both White Bear restaurant owners and residents impacted by the pandemic. “The objective of the program was to keep local businesses going,” Paul said. “The White Bear Foundation did a good job coordinating and New Trax provided transportation. That is the type of program Sharon loves. She’s in heaven doing that stuff.” One of the restaurant owners, Bill Foussard, called the Hanifl family “down to earth” and an “incredible asset to the community. They are so committed and so generous and they don’t want recognition,” he noted. “The program was a Godsend for us, it helped get us all through (the pandemic).” The Hanifls left their Chicago-area home a few years ago to be closer to their three children and grandchildren in the Twin Cities area. They spend part of the year in Florida, where they hunkered down in 2020, organizing Sunday sing-alongs from their condo balcony. Suzanne rediscovered sewing, making fun masks for the grandchildren and is helping plan her virtual high-school reunion this summer in India. Paul joked that he spent the pandemic “being an old person.” He walks a lot and still loves to fish, although remote trips to South America and New Guinea were canceled. They have fished all over the world. Thoroughbreds are another passion for the couple who are breeding Minnesota racehorses for the track. They keep a band of brood mares and foals at Suzanne Stables in the northwest metro. Suzanne doesn’t feel they’ve lived in the area long enough to be asked to lead the July 2 parade but said they agreed, hoping it would spotlight the performing arts center. “We want to help people make the connection to CPA and Lakeshore Players Theatre,” she noted. Their name is on the marquee, after all, again thanks to Sharon who suggested the Hanifl Foundation provide the grant that secured naming rights. Suzanne had called it “an honor” to see their name on the beautiful building. “We were given so much, you have to give back,” she said. This might be Paul’s first time in a parade, but it’s not for Suzanne. She remembers walking in a local firemen’s parade when she was 10. Since her family raised white chickens, she chose to pull a little red wagon carrying her favorite leghorn.

Biology teacher ‘dedicated to community’ By Debra Neutkens A White Bear Lake native who graduated from White Bear (class of ‘98) and now teaches in the White Bear school district has a lot of “Bears” in his resume. That seems appropriate for Manitou Days’ Volunteer of the Year since the 2021 theme is “Bears Together.” Presenters of the award took Chad O’Leary by surprise when they walked into his North Campus classroom with the special sash. His reaction was typical of the unassuming science teacher. “I’m like, what is going on here? I was absolutely floored,” he said. “I do not like being the center of attention.” Put him in front of a class full of teenagers, though, and the affable O’Leary is in his comfort zone. “They can be quirky, like their teacher,” he admitted. “You meet them where they’re at and you walk forward.” Teaching is O’Leary’s second career. He majored in biology as an undergrad and holds master’s degrees in theology and education. He did youth ministry for a time before deciding he missed science and turned to teaching, a decision that allows him to work with young people in a learning environment. He’s been teaching general and AP biology at North for five years. The person who nominated O’Leary for Volunteer of the Year, Rheanna O’Brien, has known him since they were freshmen in high school and attests to his “full commitment to any project he pursues”, as well as his delightful sense of humor. “I believe that Chad’s consistent dedication to our community has touched the lives of many

people,” O’Brien wrote. The Manitou Days Volunteer of the Year was a member of the Facilities Planning Team that laboriously hashed out the school district’s expansion plans, helping prepare the community for the successful bond referendum in 2019. He also volunteered to serve on the Core Planning Team for the high school project, providing insight into teachers’ and community members’ needs in a 21st century environment. O’Brien also shared a little known fact about O’Leary: he writes the creative clues for the Manitou Days Medallion Hunt. “Chad has devoted a significant amount of time, effort and talent to researching the White Bear Lake area and its history to write these exceptional clues,” she told the committee. “For the last 25 years, Chad has brought people of all ages in our community together to participate in this marvelous hunt.” The treasure hunt runs in his blood, O’Leary said. He’s searched for the St. Paul Winter Carnival medallion since he was 12. Celia Fuhrman, a 10th grader at White Bear Lake High School North Campus, was awarded $100 prize for her artwork, which will be featured on posters and T-shirts for Marketfest 2021. All of the artwork submissions will be on display at Eat! @ Banning and 5th throughout the summer.

The Manitou Days Grande Parade will begin on 2nd Street at Clark Avenue. The Parade will travel down 3rd Street and turns north on Banning Avenue. The Parade follows Banning Avenue for one block and turns east onto 4th Street. The Parade travels down 4th Street to Lake Avenue. At Lake Avenue, the Parade turns north and follows Lake Avenue to 11th Street/West Park.

Q: When is the Manitou Days Parade? A: Friday, July 2, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown White Bear Lake. Q: What if it's raining? A: Come on down. The parade is held rain or shine. Q: Will there be candy? A: Parade participants are allowed to distribute candy or promotional items safely. All eﬀorts must be made to avoid hand to hand distribution. Therefore, distribution will be made by persons walking along the parade route. Items cannot be thrown by parade participants. Parents, please help us out by making sure children do not walk up to a parade unit looking for candy. Parade vehicles and ﬂoats have limited visibility and drivers cannot always see children who venture into the roadway to collect candy. Please respect parade participants and other spectators by supervising your children at all times and maintain a comfortable social distance from those around you.

The Manitou Days Parade Committee must secure line-up space for parade registrants, set-up space for vendors and clear streets for the flow of the parade. Q: How long are the streets closed? A: Some roads are closed at 6:00 pm and stay closed until approximately 8 p.m. Q: Can I drive into streets closed due to parade staging and route? A: The parade area is closed to through traffic; however, residents may drive in. Q: Will I get a ticket? A: Yes — cars can be ticketed and/or towed for ignoring “No Parking” signage. Q: Where can I park? A: Look for a space on the west side of Highway 61. Parking lots and side streets are great options. Q: Where can I view the parade? A: From a curb or sidewalk along the entire parade route. Arrive early with a blanket or chairs to secure a prime viewing location. Be mindful of other spectators and maintain a comfortable social distance from those around you. For many, this may be their first outing in a large crowd. Do not set up in or stand in front of a group already seated or in the street. Q: Can I sit in the street? A: No. The street must be kept clear for parade participants. For safety reasons, you must stay on the curb or sidewalk.

Q: Who puts this on? A: The Parade Committee is a division of White Bear Events, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to promoting White Bear Lake. New volunteers are always welcome. Q: How is the parade funded? A: Through parade sponsorships, participant and vendor fees. The City of White Bear Lake supplies logistical support including assistance from the White Bear Lake Department of Public Works and the White Bear Lake Police Department.

Q: What is the parade route? A: The Manitou Days Grande Parade begins on 2nd Street at Clark Avenue. The Parade travels down 3rd Street and turns north on Banning Avenue. Parking signs depicting No Parking areas and timing will be posted around downtown the evening before the event. Enforcement begins at 3:30p.m. the day of Marketfest lasting until vendors vacate the area at the close of the event. Violators will be towed at their own expense.
