A message from the Mayor
As the Chair of the Manitou Days Volunteer committee, I’d like to welcome you to our Manitou Days community celebration from June 13 to July 4. There are 22 days of events and activities, and you will find events that have been a tradition for years, plus some new events this year. This year’s theme is “Bears That Shine”, and we have selected 22 individuals from 40+ submissions to be Dale recognized as a shining bear! Our volunteer board and the Grambush event planners hope you will join in the fun of the activities! Let me highlight a few events that you will not want to miss. Marketfest kicks things off Thursday, June 13 with two stages of live music and 150 vendors! Live music includes Harrison Street Band at the Gazebo and Pandora’s Other Box on the 3rd street stage. Marketfest is family friendly and free to attend. Watch for the kiddie parade as well! The Grande Parade and Beach Dance follow on Friday, June 14. This year’s parade will have over 100 units. Feel free to call out for candy and say thank you! You can watch the parade in downtown or on Lake Ave. – keep your feet back! After the parade head up to West Park/Memorial Beach for the Rotary Club/Explore White Bear Beach Dance. Get your tickets early or pay $10 at the gate! Food and beverages will be available for purchase until 11p.m. Saturday events include Yogadevotion on the beach, Sandcastles & Creatures Building Contest, Twin Cities Wakesurf Open, Garage Sale at Community of Grace Lutheran Church, White Bear Lake Bike Rodeo, Benson Airport Open House, Putter around downtown, Sidewalk Boutique, and Flea Market. And there is lots more to do and see over the remaining 19 days of Manitou Days like the Boat Show, 5K Run, Farmers Market, Donuts with a Cop, Ski Otters, and a pancake breakfast! Manitou Days ends on July 4th with the Jake Nelson Band on the Gazebo Stage at Marketfest, as well as a new band to Marketfest, Kinda Fonda Wanda on the 3rd Street Stage. This high-octane rock’n roll honky-tonk band is inspired by the queen of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. Then head down to West Park to celebrate White Bear Lake being named the Best Town in Minnesota by Minnesota Monthly Magazine at an Ice Cream Social, free ice cream until it is gone. There is also music at West Park, a fly-over and then fireworks over the lake! Thank you to the hard work of our Fireworks Committee and so many citizens who donate money to that event! There are many activities that happen over the 22 days that we hope you enjoy. I would like to thank all sponsors, volunteers, businesses, communities, City of White Bear Lake, and organizations that make Manitou Days possible. A special thank you to those who have helped at the Friday morning meetings!
Happy 52nd Anniversary Manitou Days! Thanks to the dedication and hard work of countless volunteers over the past 53 years, this annual summer event has flourished and grown. This year’s festival boasts more than 70 events, from the Medallion Hunt to the Boat Show, or the Children’s Fishing Contest to the popular Beach Dance, there Jo Emerson will be something for everyone. This year we will proudly celebrate being named 2018 Best Minnesota Town on the Fourth of July! Stop by Marketfest for live music and festivities, and then around 8p.m head over to West Park/Memorial Beach for the Ice Cream Social courtesy of Minnesota Monthly. Then enjoy the music by Shoreview Northern Lights Variety Band, a flyover with T-6 planes, and the amazing fireworks display. If anyone has any old photos of past Manitou Days, please get them to Sara Hanson at the Historical Society so she can scan them and add them to the archives. It would be great to see how Manitou Days has evolved and to take a walk down memory lane. P.S. We are missing one of our long-time volunteers at committee meetings and Manitou Days events. Norman (Norm) Vogel passed away earlier this year. He was a volunteer White Bear Lake Firefighter for 20 years and very involved in the community. Marketfest Director’s note Welcome to the 29th season of Marketfest – we hope you will join us for the official kickoff to summer events in the White Bear Lake community on Thursday, June 13! Marketfest runs Thursdays, June 13 to June 25, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Explore and experience local vendors, nonprofits, and downtown businesses, as well as Lisa Beecroft games, activities, and demonstrations for kids and adults alike. In the Lunds & Byerlys Kids Activity Zone we have kid-friendly favorites including the Petting Zoo (sponsored by Roberts Management Group), a climbing wall, inflatables, a bungee jumper, plus White Bear Fire Department trucks on 4th Street. Additionally, our weekly classic Car Show at 4th Street between Banning Avenue and Cook Avenue is always a hit! And Marketfest offers a different weekly theme on 4th Street between Washington Avenue and Banning Avenue where activities of special interest take place – visit www.marketfestwbl.com for more info. Each week we feature live music on two stages – the Kowalski’s Gazebo Stage on Washington Avenue and the White Bear Mitsubishi 3rd Street Stage in the back lot. 14 bands will perform this summer, many with ties to White Bear Lake area which makes their performances extra special. This year’s returning favorites include Lamont Cranston, Power of 10, The Castaways, and more. We also have newcomers Salsa de Sol, Kinda Fonda Wonda, Joyann Parker, and more joining Marketfest for the first time. Grab a chair (or bring your own) and enjoy the music and a scrumptious bite to eat from one of our many food trucks and vendors. For a fourth year we've invited local artists to submit their art to be included on the promotional posters and t-shirts for Marketfest. We had 13 entries this year, and we are proud to announce that we have selected Manitou Bridge, an acrylic painting by Ava Del Castillo from White Bear Lake North Campus. In addition to the poster and t-shirt, her art will be on display with all of the other submissions at EAT on Banning and 5th in downtown White Bear Lake during the Marketfest season. You can purchase an official Marketfest t-shirt at the 4th Street Info Booth during Marketfest – but quantities are limited, so get your t-shirt early! With over 160 food, merchandise/service booths, nonprofits, and downtown businesses participating - there is truly something for everyone at Marketfest. Medallion design contest new to festival By Elizabeth Callen The Manitou Days Medallion Hunt kicking off June 13 with 10 days of clues until the medallion is found, is among the most anticipated activities of the annual event. This year, the community-wide treasure hunt, which is the oldest of its kind in the Twin Cities metro after the St. Paul Winter Carnival, will feature something new: a design contest. White Bear Lake native Chad O’Leary, who has written the clues for the medallion hunt since 1995, said the idea came from a desire to highlight what makes the White Bear community and its annual treasure hunt unique. “There are dozens and dozens of suburban treasure hunts around the Twin Cities. We are the oldest one, and so we try to live up to our reputation as being one of the best,” he said. Students in Shawn Gritzmacher’s graphic design classes at White Bear Lake High School South Campus submitted designs, which were later judged by a committee. “With the students thinking in a whole new direction, they could come up with something that’s 50,000 times better than what we
could come up with on our own,” O’Leary said. Senior Devin Close drew the winning design, which features a polar bear wearing a war bonnet. “We loved the design and then consulted with our district’s Native American Cultural Liaison, who then took the design to the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee to be sure that the image is culturally respectable,” said O’Leary. “The group found the design to honor the history of our region, which has deep Native American cultural roots. We also feel that the design is beautiful and celebrates what makes us proud to be from White Bear Lake.” Abby Lindvall and Ben Kroll, both seniors at South Campus, were the runners-up. *Clues at manitoudays.com

Retirement doesn’t stop grand marshal from community involvement By Debra Neutkens Manitou Days Grand Marshal Dr. Michael Lovett has been in a parade or two before. He's ridden in the district's orange VW bug every year as school superintendent and was grand marshal in 2017, the year Lovett retired. He was also grand marshal in the Minnetonka homecoming parade as assistant superintendent before he came to White Bear Lake. “I have 11 years of parade-waving experience,” Lovett joked. The new recognition, he added, means he's “making a brief return to fleeting fame from my current position as a PIP (previously important person).” These days the former superintendent balances his priorities; namely family, friends and faith, with selective professional endeavors. In other words, Lovett can pick and choose how his time is spent. “I do fewer things now but I do
them more deeply,” he said. The retired educator has not tired of education. He is still involved in teaching, serving on the adjunct faculty at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota lecturing on leadership to superintendent candidates. Lovett is active in Rotary Club, moving up the ladder to president in a few years, and active in his church, St. John in the Wilderness. He serves on a committee for 2nd Half with Lyngblomsten to help seniors maintain independence, serves on the YMCA board, is vice chair of the Minnesota Private College Council and is involved in Leadership Tomorrow. Mostly Lovett enjoys mentoring students, something he's done his entire career. “I want young people to have a purpose beyond themselves,” Lovett said. As keynote speaker in April, he reminded members of the WBLAHS National Honor Society that their mission in life is to find their purpose. “To give your best in the face of enormous challenges, you need to know what you want to achieve and the kind of person you want to be,” he told the students. He shared with inductees something his wise father instilled: that character was more important than what direction

he took with school and life. “I give the same advice to you. Whatever you choose to do, your values should shine through, like those we accentuate tonight: besides character, scholarship, service and leadership. With help of your families, friends and school, you will make a difference.” When there is time for hobbies, Lovett focuses on photography and sailing. He takes a photo critique class once a month at the Arts Center and is learning to sail an A-scow he co-owns. Lovett and wife Sylvia have four children, all living in separate states, and two granddaughters, whom they love to visit in Denver. International travel is another passion. They have hosted a number of exchange students and college faculty and in turn, have visited them in their home countries, including Korea, Japan, Iceland, Sweden and Mongolia. In February, they traveled to Uganda to visit a woman the Lovetts befriended as a teen. They have no intentions of leaving their home on Second Street. “There is a closer sense of community here than anywhere I've seen before,” Lovett said. The retired superintendent said he was “honored and humbled to be the grand marshal. I consider it a celebration of community. I like the idea of being visible. I also look at it as symbolically honoring staff who encourage and support students every day.”

The sign of a good volunteer By Debra Neutkens The committee member who usually presents the Manitou Days Volunteer of the Year sash to the annual recipient was on the receiving end this year. And surprisingly, Bill Weigel had no clue he was getting the award. That had to be a tough thing to keep secret. The committee even had a fake sash to present to a proxy at the unveiling May 10. “Everyone was in on it,” Bill chuckled. People who don't know Bill probably know his signs. He's been in the sign business practically his whole life. He sold his first sign in seventh grade and has owned Bill Weigel Signs in Vadnais Heights for three-plus decades. A consummate community booster, Weigel has been involved with just about every civic organization in the Vadnais Heights / White Bear Lake area. The list is impressive: • 35-year member of the Vadnais Heights Lion Club where he served as president twice, helped form the Club's Foundation, which raises funds for the food program, and coordinates the bell-ringing initiative supporting the Salvation Army. • Volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 50 when his son Doug joined. Bill remained active after his son earned his Eagle Award. • Associate member of Main Street, Inc., representing the board to Manitou Days and the Bear'ly Open. He is chair-elect of Manitou Days. • Board member of the White Bear Center for the Arts. • Past chair and board member of the White Bear Area Chamber of Commerce. Past recipient Business of the Year.
• Member of the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Corporation since 1994. Chair 1999. • A leader at LifePoint Church of Maplewood, a role he's maintained since his freshman year at Bethel College.

Bethel is where Bill met his wife Jane, an Ohio native and retired math teacher. They've been married 48 years and have a son Doug, a photographer in Oakland, California, and daughter Amy, who followed in her mom's footsteps and teaches school in Roseville. Both children grew up in the house on Koehler Road that Bill and Jane bought 44 years ago. He runs the sign business out of their home. Need a sign? Bill can make it. Mostly he does vinyl signs like banners or makes nameplates. He has donated signs, discounted signs and made in-kind signs for myriad fundraising events and sponsorships. “I've made signs for just about every organization in the area,” Bill said. There isn't a lot of time for hobbies, but he and Jane like to travel, visiting family in California and Ohio mostly. His work is enjoyable and helps Weigel network, which gets the word out. The committee hours he puts in is better than going door to door selling signs, he said. His goal is to get more people involved in the area's nonprofit organizations to better serve the community. There's that c-word again: community. Weigel walks the talk when it comes to serving his community. People who know him describe Weigel as a “kind and caring individual” who is dedicated to service. His passion to serve and give back was instilled in him as a child. Growing up on a farm near Pillager, Minnesota, Bill learned early on from his parents that it's one's responsibility to give back, in church and schools, the county fair board and 4-H. His work as a humble servant, inspiring leader and selfless individual, whether it's behind the scenes, or as a greeter at an Arts Center event (one of his favorite duties), is second nature to the 2019 Volunteer of the Year, who believes in building both signs and community.

Parade volunteers have dedicated countless hours to bring you this popular event in celebration of Manitou Days. Q: When is the Manitou Days Parade? A: Friday, June 14 at 6:30pm in downtown White Bear Lake. Q: What if it’s raining? A: Come on down. The parade is held rain or shine. Q: How much should I plan? A: The Manitou Days Grande Parade attracts thousands to downtown White Bear Lake so plan ahead before you head out. Traffic will be heavy. Give yourself plenty of time to drive to downtown White Bear Lake. Q: Will there be candy? A: Most parade participants distribute candy or promotional items. Distribution will be made by persons walking along the parade route. Items cannot be thrown by parade participants. Parents, please help us out by making sure children do not walk up to a parade unit looking for candy. Parade vehicles and floats have limited visibility and drivers may not see children who venture into the roadway to collect candy. Please respect parade participants and other spectators by supervising your children at all times. Q: Who puts this on? A: The Parade Committee is part of White Bear Events, a volunteerrun organization dedicated to promoting White Bear Lake. New volunteers are always welcome. Q: How is the parade funded? A: Through parade sponsorships, participant and vendor fees. The City of White Bear Lake

2019 Manitou Days Grande Parade Route The Manitou Days Grande Parade will begin on 2nd Street at Clark Avenue. The Parade will travel down 3rd Street and turns north on Banning Avenue. The Parade follows Banning Avenue for one block and turns east onto 4th Street. The Parade travels down 4th Street to Lake Avenue unless detoured. At Lake Avenue, the Parade turns north and follows Lake Avenue to 11th Street/West Park.

This year’s Grande Parade happens to coincide with Flag Day. In honor of the June 14 holiday, Grandma’s Bakery ordered 8,000 4x6 inch flags to give away prior to the parade. Spectators are encouraged to wave the small flags from the sidelines as parade units file past. Committee member John Lupo, owner of Grandma’s Bakery, said the sight of moms, dads and kids waving a small American flag “will look like a scene from a Norman Rockwell painting.” Additional information can be found at manitoudays.com.

Button winner Shines By Shannon Granholm The 2019 Manitou Days button design contest winner is Dylan Hood, a fourthgrader at Lincoln Elementary Dylan Hood School. Dylan is the son of Nichole and Marshall Hood and brother of sixth-grader Madisyn Hood. The two runner-ups are fourthgrader Alex Pliego-Ramirez from Lincoln Elementary School and fifth-grader Libby Horowicki from Matoska International. Each year, students in grades K-5 from White Bear Lake's public and private schools can enter a drawing that illustrates the festival's theme. This year's theme is ‘Bears that Shine.’ The 2019 contest was tough, as there were 229 entries. Dylan wanted to participate in the contest because he loves drawing. When thinking about
the design for the button and the theme, he decided he wanted his bears to be dancing. He added ‘shine’ by drawing a disco ball above the bears. As the winner, he received a $100 cash prize, pizza party for his class, a plaque with his button on it, a spot in the Grande Parade, 4,000 buttons to hand out and a ride to school courtesy of the White Bear Lake Police Department. The Manitou Days Committee selected the winners. The Contest has been sponsored by Johnson Peterson Funeral Home for over 30 years.

Bears That Shine This year’s theme is ‘Bears That Shine’, and we have selected 22 individuals from 40+ submissions to be recognized as a shining bear! Abby Kath
Abby is a kindergarten teacher at Lincoln Elementary she has been named the 2019 Teacher of the Year at the White Bear Lake Teachers' Association's Teacher of the Year Extravaganza event.
Anthony (Nino) Nardecchia
Nino Nardecchia creates notecards from his paintings to sell in the local communities they depict. Nardecchia gives 100 percent of the net proceeds from his card sales to organizations like the Mahtomedi Area Food Shelf, St. Andrew’s Community Resource Center, H2O for Life and Second Harvest. Nardecchia visits school classrooms and senior centers as a motivational speaker to encourage both children and seniors to follow their dreams, whether it’s pursuing a smoldering passion for art, picking up a new instrument or writing a children’s book.
Bryan Belisle
Bryan has served at many levels throughout the community including the YMCA Board, 8 years on the City Council, and still currently serves on the WBL Police Civil Service Commission and the WBL Park Board. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Sorry to say I don’t have more information to provide but I’m sure his wife Lael could greatly add to his resume
Gloria Jansen
Gloria has represented White Bear Lake well as a top runner from Minnesota. She has been a familiar face in many of the races; she has also donated much of her free time to the Minnesota Distance Runner Association in various leadership roles, served on the Team USA Minnesota Board of Directors and has spent much time coaching runners of all levels in her sport. She has been in many of the local races supporting community organizations. As well as races around the county. In 1999 and 2000 she was designated the USATF National Age Group Runner of the Year for her age group and then again in 2003, 2004, and 2005 in the next age group. In 1993 she ran Grandma's Marathon sub-3 (2:59:30) and her comment was her and her noon hour training partners all ran great races.
Joan Mample
She is helps promote patriotism in WBL by organizing the VFW 1782 Aux color guard and carrying a flag in Memorial day parade, Manitou days parade, Vadnais Heights Heritage days parade, Shortest Marathon, and Veterans Day service at Veterans Park, just to name a few. Also, she coordinated placement of flags on veterans graves at St. Mary's cemetery for Memorial Day.
Justin Smith
Justin Smith is an amazing activist and public speaker in our community. Justin is in his early 20s and has kernicterus which is a type of brain damage caused by severe jaundice that goes untreated. Because of this, Justin lives with Athetoid Cerebral Palsy and must use a wheelchair to get around and a speech-generating device to communicate. None of this has slowed Justin down or prevented him from making a difference. Justin is very active in politics and advocacy. He has participated in the Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities, Partners in Policymaking (a leadership training program for individuals with disabilities), and spends time at the state capitol and out in DC advocating for individuals with disabilities.
Lily Pederson
Lily is a 7th grader at Central Middle School, she is also an elite level training gymnast at Flips who is currently a member of the USAG national developmental team, this is for gymnasts that are training for the 2024 Olympics and beyond. She is a "bear that shines" because she is one of the hardest working, most determined and motivated 13 year old I have ever met.

Heidi is the brightest shining bear I've ever known. She has been a relay for life team captain for about 12 years. She is a member of the WB area league of women voters and moderates candidate forums for the league. She is a board member for Tubman. She is also a volunteer at St. Andrews ushering and greeting for services. She is very humble.

Ivory and Lucy are White Bear Lake girls that shine! These young philanthropists are hosting the 4th annual WBLwalk4water on July 10, 2019. Last year they raised over $2,000 to help build wells (through H2O for Life) for kids and families that don't have enough water. These Central Middle School girls are shining in WBL by brining the community together to support a wonderful cause!
Jane Jones
Jane has served our community on multiple levels both big and small. She is also a mother of 3, grandmother of 5 and wife to John for 64 years and counting. (Also battling her second bout of cancer as of April 24) She serves in many groups including Parkview UCC, Diaconate board, Board of Trustees, Financial secretary, Christian Board of Education, and many more.
Jerry Kwapick
Jerry has been the White Bear Lake Girls Hockey Coach for the last 10 years. We would like to thank him for his many years of service working with student athletes. You will still finding him help with many other community organizations. (Bruce Strand White Bear Press April 11) Not only has Jerry served on numerous boards & committees, like the WBEDC, Greater WBL Community Foundation, WBA Chamber, etc, but more importantly, he has been the coach and mentor for the White Bear Lake
Megan does so much for the community working through the VHEDC. She is on the golf committee, she the leader for the Women in Leadership luncheon series and is a tireless advocate for the community.
Robert Lundberg
Bob is a retired White Bear Lake school teacher and Elementary Principal. While many call him "Mr. Lundberg" now a days most call him "Lion Bob". Lion Bob has been a member of the White Bear Lake Lions Club for over 20 years. He has served as Lion's Dictionary chair for 3rd grade 17 years, Lion's Thesaurus Chair for 5th grade 17 years, as well as Peace Poster Chair, Scholarship Chair and Past President. You will see him active in many for the club activities around town. Lion Bob fits the motto "We Serve" of Lions International well. Lion Bob has also received the Lions Melvin Jones and Lions Helen Keller awards.
Susan Grun
Sue started the White Bear Pickleball club a couple of years ago. It has since grown to over 100 participants! Sue continues to handle on a volunteer basis all the administrative work including, but not limited to, communication, scheduling, opening and closing sites, and registering new members. In addition, she will take new players aside and give them a brief lesson to get them up and running. This club is a wonderful addition to the community and would not have come into existence without her efforts!

Ken has served on the City of White Bear Lake Planning Commission for over 20 years. Ken has been an active member of the Rotary Club of White Bear Lake (1987) and has held many positions on the board and served as president in 1999/2000.

A shining White Bear grad who grew up and is now raising her family in the community, Jess volunteers her time and talent wherever she can. She created the Soccer Buddies preschool soccer program, volunteers at Lincoln Elementary in her children's classes, volunteers with various Lincoln PTA events including the Lincoln play, developed and chairs the Lincoln Gala, created a birthday basket program for district families, volunteers as St. Mary of the Lake parish nurse, developed a lice prevention program for the district, coached club soccer, volunteers with Children's Performing Arts, and much more.
Jim Galvin
commitment to each student had a remarkable influence on those he taught and coached. Since his retirement from the school district, Mr. Galvin continues to be a presence in our community, at times serving as a reserve teacher and a volunteer coach, and often visible at school events and athletic contests, continuing to encourage and inspire. Mr. Galvin demonstrates our community core values of compassion, integrity, respect, responsibility, and service, and is an inspiring role model for how each of us can make our wider community welcoming and better for all.

Marketfest poster art winner Ava Del Castillo
By Elizabeth Callen The winner of this year's Marketfest Artwork Contest is Ava Del Castillo, a 10th grader at White Bear Lake High School – North Campus. Each year, local students have the opportunity to submit a drawing that incorporates a recognizable feature specific to the White Bear Lake area and/or Marketfest itself.
Ava's winning entry, which depicts a polar bear overlooking White Bear Lake, will be featured on Marketfest's promotional posters and t-shirts. She will also receive a $100 check, as well as a free poster and t-shirt.
The annual contest is judged by the Marketfest Committee. This year's contest was a tough one, as there were 15 total entries. Honorable mentions were given to Amanda Brown, Emma Carrol, Jude Snell, and Olivia and Jenny Martinez. All entries will be on display at Eat! @ Banning and 5th, which sponsors the contest, through the end of July.

This year’s theme was ‘Bears that Shine’ celebrating those who inspire students in the community. The winners are not ranked. Winners were each given $50 from the White Bear Lake Rotary Club. They were thrown a pizza and pool party at the White Bear Lake Country Inn and were invited to walk in the Manitou Days Grande Parade. Congratulations to: Otter Lake Elementary fourth grader Bella Bussiere; Central Middle School sixth grader Grace Conroy; Vadnais Heights Elementary fourth grader Brynn Gamradt; Matoska International Elementary first grader David Harman; Lakeaires Elementary first grader Gianluca Rio; and Central Middle School sixth grader Aida Thiam.

Often, he says, people come in wanting to buy something tangible thinking that the price will go up. Sometimes a customer will inherit an item or a whole estate, with no clue what they have. Westerling and his team go into the home and make a list of
every item, with their offer price. The biggest mistake people make, Westerling said, is to clean an item. ‘Do Not Clean,’ he emphasized. “It totally destroys the collector value of any coin. Just box them up and bring them to us. We’re happy to sort and itemize and we can do it much faster.” Westerling and his store manager, Aidan Kelly, both love to be in the shop every day, “not knowing what will walk in the door next.” And of course, Sonny the labrador retriever, is in the shop every day to greet visitors.
