STILLWATER – Lift Bridge Brewing invites all pickers, grinners and generally anyone interested in having a fun time to the 8th annual “Pickin’ and Grinnin’” party, which will take place at the brewery Sept. 10. The day, which begins at noon, will include brewery tours, live bluegrass music, plenty of cold beers and most importantly, a chance to help out in harvesting local hops for a special fresh hop brew. A Lift Bridge newsletter jokes that the event will “trick” guests into hanging out and helping harvest local hops while enjoying live music and cold beers. The hops harvested will be immediately used in the Lift Bridge’s once-a-year fresh hop brew Harvestor.

This brew is unique because it uses local hops, brewing them the day of or almost immediately after they have been picked, rather than using dried hops. This process is called fresh hop, or wet hop.

“A lot of times the hops are picked in the field and immediately dried, and that helps increase storage and shelf life,” said Lift Bridge Brewmaster Matt Hall. “Typically wet brews are made in areas in close proximity to hop farms, picked within hours or under a day or two a beer is made with those hops. So it’s been historically produced in Minnesota for a long time, since the late 1800s, but it’s been more popular in Washington, Oregon and a little bit in Idaho. Within the last 10 years, the birth of artisan or small hop growing, we’ve been able to produce locally made wet hop beers.”

PolliNATION celebrates the ‘tiny giants’ with art and music festival

The theme this year is Tiny GIANTS, in reference to the fact that small insects can have a big impact on the ecosystem.

The change of venue will allow for a little more expansion, said Laurie Schneider, director of the Pollinator Friendly Alliance.

“The biggest thing is space,” she said. “We’re allowed to spread out and include more. September is the absolute best month to be outdoors in Minnesota, so what better place to be outside than on a beautiful farm in Stillwater on a September day? There are more ovptions to do bigger things and spread out more, so we have more educational vendors, and advocates, and interactive art installations which allow you to engage and experience what a bee might.”

One exhibit, for example, is an enormous bumblebee nest that guests can go inside to see what a bee’s perspective might be like.

Film & Music Festival resists the rain STILLWATER – The Square Lake Film & Music Festival took place on Aug. 20, hosted annually by local resident Paul Creager. Hundreds of people turned out (many by bicycle) despite rain throughout the day. The festival interspersed live music acts on an outdoor stage with short film showings inside the nearby barn.

Paintings and pots embody Land, Sky, Water at ArtReach Gallery Charlotte Schuld and Zac Spates exhibition opens Aug. 25 STILLWATER – Natural spaces are important to the work of painter Charlotte Schuld and potter Zac Spates.

Playing with light, texture and volume, these two artists celebrate the aesthetics of the natural world through very different media. On Aug. 25, their joint exhibition Land, Sky, Water will open at the ArtReach St. Croix Gallery.

Charlotte Schuld is a landscape painter who has worked in watercolors, mixed media and most recently in acrylics. While much of her work depicts the natural beauty of the St. Croix Valley, she also draws inspiration from her travels throughout the U.S. and Europe.

On these trips Schuld gathers ideas, photographs and sketches to bring home to her Stillwater studio. She writes, “We only have one Earth. This is my way of celebrating and honoring it.”

Zac Spates wood-fires his functional pottery, throwing precise forms on the wheel and then altering them to create a loose, organic quality. When loading his kiln, he uses strategic stacking techniques to manipulate the direction of the flame during the firing. The

STILLWATER – The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of new restaurant Ziggy’s on Aug. 10. Ziggy’s offers street food, live music and cocktails, in a cool, open space. Featuring a changing food truck menu, Ziggy’s offers unique edibles like pork belly Asian tacos, Brazilian corn cakes with a coconut flare and desserts such as beignets with cayenne caramel sauce. Over the winter months they will be bringing guest food trucks from the Twin Cities to share unique flavors in Stillwater. They are open to suggestions on what kinds of flavors to bring in.

We’re at the museum

W

HEN THE MINNESOTA get-together opens on Aug. 25, the Minnesota Newspaper Foundation Letterpress Museum will be open for its 28th year of operation.

This year, Kathy and I will be in the museum for the morning shift from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 29, Aug. 31, and Sept. 2. Some of the days we will have grandchildren with us teaching them the process of how newspapers were printed in the early 1900s all the way to the 1960s.

We enjoy explaining how the equipment works, but we also enjoy interacting with people who have had a connection to the industry through a parent or a grandparent. The printindustry was once the second About the ing largest industry in Minnesota.

While newspapers have changed in their production process, their purpose has not changed. The primary purpose of newspapers is to hold government accountable for its actions or inactions, inform readers of local happenings, stimulate the economy of the business community through marketing and advertising, and to allow community groups of people to have a voice through letters to the editor.

Newspaper publishers and editors have a responsibility to call attention to their readers what is taking place in their community, whether it has positive or negative implications.

Newspapers also challenge readers to debate issues through the newspaper to reach decisions that will be of benefit to the entire community.

The museum volunteers continue to print a fourpage newspaper in the letterpress process all 12 days of the fair. This is a working, living museum typical of the newspaper offices throughout the United States in the 1930s and 40s. The letterpress process dates back to the 1600s and continued until the late 1960s when newspapers converted to the offset process, no longer using hot lead, the Linotype and hand-set type.

It was typical for weekly newspapers to do commercial printing like auction bills, business cards and tickets on Thursday and Friday of the week.

Two commercial presses are in the museum, one hand fed, the other automatic. While you are at the museum, you will even see how to make a printer’s hat out of newspapers.

A FEW WEEKS ago in this column I suggested that the non-aquatic plant life be cleared along the lakeshore of White Bear Lake for more visual enjoyment of the lake and when the water returns fewer decaying trees in the water.

I was corrected in this matter by my neighbor, David Schad, who plays a major role at the DNR. He said, “Gene, that’s up to the property owners. There is no restriction on removing non-aquatic plant life” That’s really good to know, and also in the cases where the street ends belong to the city, we could encourage them in the same process. It’s surprising what you learn over breakfast at Keys in the mornings. Thanks, Deputy Commissioner.

“PAINT YOUR WAGON” is being presented at the Ordway Theater through Aug. 21. Opening night on Aug. 9 gave the audience a thrilling revised story of the development of a mining town in the Gold Rush era of California.

Jon Marans of 5th Avenue Theatre adapted the original script to include a deeper insight into the cultural differences during the development of the small mining town. The new “Paint Your Wagon” gives an accurate depiction of the racial tension we are experiencing today.

If you want a delightful family evening out that will get your kids talking about social problems of today, take them to “Paint Your Wagon.” It’s a learning experience that kids of all ages will enjoy. If you haven’t used theater as an educational tool before, this is the show to begin with.

Our students are the focus of all we do

he back-to-school hustle and bustle is in full swing.

Parents are measuring their kids to see how many sizes they’ve grown, then heading off to the store to outfit them with new shoes and clothes. They’re fi lling shopping carts with pencils and notebooks, glue sticks and crayons – crossing each item off of the school supply list as they go.

They are doing Movers & all of these things to ensure their Shakers children have the tools they need Denise to be successful as they return to Pontrelli school in just a few short weeks.

We’re doing the same thing here in schools across the Stillwater Area Public School District. Our students are at the center of all we do, and our focus is on creating schools with support systems that provide them with everything they need to be successful. We’re ensuring our students have access to the very best teachers who can teach them all that they need to know in engaging and fun ways. We’re making sure we can provide all of our kids with the extra support they need, whether it comes from

a counselor or student advocate, intervention teacher, gifted and talented educator, English Language teacher or other support staff. We’re considering the lessons we teach, the classrooms we teach in, and the methods we use – all to ensure we’re doing the very best we can for our kids.

As we measure ourselves at the start of this year, we can see all of the ways that we’ve grown as a district. Achievement results show us that we’ve done an incredible job of meeting the needs of many of our students. Stillwater students continue to perform well on state tests, graduate at high levels, and get accepted into top colleges and universities.

Yet when we really look closely at those measures, we also see that there are kids who just don’t fit into the typical school mold.

These are the kids who might get bored in school because they learn faster than others. Or those who struggle to keep up. Some of them have language barriers or mental health issues, while others are dealing with stress and anxiety because of things happening at home. Our traditional ways don’t always work for every kid. As wonderful as our schools are, our teachers and staff are working to make them even better. Every single one of our kids deserves the opportunity to succeed.

Couple aims to bring “holy cross” back to the St. Croix

LAKELAND – Lower St. Croix Valley couple Carol and Derek Nelson are working to intertwine their faith with an inspiring natural setting by establishing a faith center on the banks of the St. Croix. The pair’s nonprofit business has signed a contract to purchase Beanie’s at Maui’s Landing, a popular boat launch just south of I-94 on the Minnesota side. With the purchase comes a number of watercraft that the facility has rented out over the years, including wave runners, several pontoons and a houseboat. The Nelsons hope to provide opportunities to faith-building organizations by offering activities such as Bible study on the river, outdoor services and more. The purchase will include an acre of land, 228 feet of shoreline, 16 water vessels and three buildings.

In French, “St. Croix” means “holy cross.” The river received its name from explorers in the 1600s, though the accounts of the reason for the name vary.

“What better place to do God’s work than on the Holy Cross River?” Derek said.

The Meek League is the name of the nonprofit behind the acquisition, started by the Nelsons and spiritually strengthened by several pastors in Minnesota. Part of the Meek League’s mission is to support a meek style of leadership, which adheres to Christian principles.

“There are people unfamiliar with the word meek that think it has to do with weakness and someone who’s really quiet,” Derek said. “It’s actually a strong, humble strength, and that’s what I think our society needs more of. We just think of sacrificing more, being more humble, watching the words that you say, treating people with respect, being friends of sinners.

We always say that we propose, we don’t impose, and that’s what a Christian should be doing constantly.

Showing people what Christianity is just by serving others, so that’s where meek stood out.”

Thy Holy Cross Mission will give the Meek League a chance to share their message and enjoy God’s creation with the wider community.

“The meek are supposed to inherit the earth, so we may as well take care of a piece of God’s earth right now,” Derek said. “So we decided that we’re going to dedicate this piece of land to God, equip others in using it but open it up so anybody can use the facility.”

Derek and Carol Nelson are in the process of establishing a Christian outreach and community center on the banks of the St. Croix River.

“We’re Christ-centered, and we want to be able to have a community gathering place,” Carol said.

“There’s not really any kind of community gathering places in this area.”

The boat launch employs quite a few youth from around the community, and Derek said that all of them will keep their jobs with the transition.

“If somebody came in and were to buy it and make it a private residence, it would eliminate 20 jobs,” Derek said. “We don’t just want to help and encourage youth in their Christian faith, but we also do it in employment. And that’s just a great way to mentor as well.”

He hopes it will also provide an accessible place for underprivileged youth to spend time close to nature.

“It’s a united-in-Christ kind of mission,” Derek said. “Our denomination is anything associated with Christ. Our church is St. Peter Lutheran Church in Afton, but there’s only so much you can do at a church like that. A lot of churches have a lot of empty space that doesn’t get utilized as much – I’d rather have an outdoor church. And a lot of water. That just sounds like what I’d like to do. Originally from Minnetonka, Derek was an entrepreneur for 25 years. He owned a technology recruiting firm and served as president of a private equity firm, but decided to give it up and turn his business acumen toward serving God. Carol, originally from Albert Lea, graduated from the University of Minnesota with a biological sciences degree, and later became office manager of a small manufacturing company. Derek moved to Afton in 2007.

Civics, outreach and conservation are three of the items the Meek League will focus on while it develops the place. Accessibility for all is also important.

“Nobody should ever have to pay to have access to the holy cross river,” Derek said. “So one of the first things that we’re doing is that you’ll never be charged to launch your boat on the river ever again at this site.”

The property includes three structures: a house, a general store and a four season cabin.

“We’re hoping that we can open it all up,” Carol said. “The house won’t just be our residence; it’ll be an open house.”

They hope the space will offer resources such as healthy snacks, faith-based reference materials and more, but most importantly it will provide easy access and a space for community members to celebrate faith in a unique way.

“We’re open to ideas and suggestions; it’s for everyone,” Derek said. “We’re just managing it for God. The rest is just going to be a lot of fun and solace. Anything we can do to help people’s soul. This is going to be a place where liberty and the Holy Spirit thrive.

We’ll do everything we can to honor that.”

Dogs round up in Hudson for annual sheepdog trials HUDSON, Wisconsin – Have you ever tried to teach your dog to lie down on command? How about come when called while playing with his favorite toy? Now think about teaching him or her how to do that when he’s three quarters of a mile away while controlling a flock of cantankerous sheep.

That is what sheepherding with dogs is all about, and you can see some of the best shepherds and sheepdogs in the country compete for the title of “Top Dog” at the Wisconsin Working Sheep Dog Association’s Sheepdog Trials, Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-6 at Badlands Sno-Park in Hudson.

Calvin Jones from Wales judged this event two years ago and called the location “one of the most spectacular courses he has ever seen in the U.S. or the U.K.,” and Viki Kidd and Kevan Gretton from Ontario, Canada are returning with a contingent of fellow Canadian co-competitors who have been hearing all winter about the challenging course and stunning location.

Shepherds from across the Midwest, across the U.S. and Canada will gather to test themselves and their dogs against the terrain and the sheep.

Alasdair MacRae is the Tiger Woods of sheepdog competitions. Originally from Scotland, he won the highest honor in the sport, the International Supreme Championship in the U.K., before coming to the U.S. Since arriving, he is the 12time National Champion and has won all the “majors” many times over. He was champion in Hudson two years ago with a spectacular run on the double-gather course on the last day, fetching two groups of ten sheep each 500 and 750 yards away, combining them, and then sorting off five marked sheep inside a marked area; a true test of skill, stamina, and partnership between man and dog.

MacRae is a master trainer of dogs and shepherds and many of his students will be on the field competing against their mentor. That is one of the unique things about sheepdog competition.

Polly Simpson will also be there. At 79, she lives close by in New Richmond, Wisconsin on a small farm with a small flock of sheep. She uses her dogs every day on the farm and trains them for competition. She says it keeps her young and spry and she has brought her dog Pica from a rambunctious puppy chasing sheep to a skilled sheepdog ca-

pable of going toe-to-toe at the top levels of the sport.

Other handlers are farmers, architects, scientists and accountants.

All share a love of these dogs and the supreme challenge of forging a bond with their animals that allows them to communicate with one another and cooperate to work sheep. These dogs work using their own talents and in partnership with their handlers to gather livestock and move them with care and precision over hills, through standing alfalfa, around gates and obstacles

If the fish jumps the excitement crescendos because you see your big fish, if it goes deep you just hang on and smile. In a kayak or canoe on a river you’re not just fighting the fish, you’re fighting moving water too! The fish often has the advantage with downed trees, rocks and rapids.

This was a return trip to Oneida County to float a river about which my son Josh said, “There are no Wild River little fish in this river!”…. referring to smallmouth bass. We were there Trails earlier this summer to fish and wilderness camp on Willow Flowage Jim Bennett over Fathers Day weekend, but all the remote island campsites were taken.

We did find a campground on the flowage and after a day figuring out the lake we got into some perfect pan sized walleyes, thanks to Fish Whisperer Jon McCorckle.

On the last day of this June excursion, Josh decided to float a nearby river in his kayak with fly rod and blockhead popper for smallies. He hooked and lost three fish but said they were some of the biggest smallies he’d ever hooked into. Sitting around the campfire that night we decided to return later and get serious about this river.

The return trip had an entirely different cast of characters that included Josh and his wife Megan on their sit on top kayaks and my wife Nancee, 7-year-old son Brady and me in a 17’ canoe. Using fly rods Josh

After another epic fight, Josh lipped this monster 19” smallie and posed for pictures before returning her to the river.

At the end of this deep-water run I felt a snag, so as the canoe drifted past I let the canoe apply pressure hoping to pull free from whatever obstacle my tube jig

hook had found. That’s when the snag pulled back and I was in a fight with the biggest fish of the day. Jumping, making runs for downed trees and around rocks, this old Black Bass knew all of the moves. Nancee maneuvered the boat out to mid stream where most of the fight took place before I lipped it long enough to pose with the 19 ¾” hawg. Megan suddenly hooked another big bass, which got away, but minutes later she landed another not as big. I hooked into the last fish of the day and got it right up to the boat, but as I reached for it the hook pulled loose on what I guessed was a 17” smallie. Josh was right; “There were no little fish in this river!”

“All the vendors are environmentally geared, creating a community, or ‘nation’ of pollinator champions,” Schneider said. “It really does feel this way when you’re at the event. Everyone came together as community and supported pollinators and the environment; it has a really positive vibe to it.”

Pollinators play a critical role in the environment, but over the last few years, populations have begun to suffer as a result of chemical usage in agriculture and other industries. The Pollinator Friendly Alliance formed in order to address this concern on a local level,

and to spread the word to members of the community.

“The national conservation organization for invertebrates is the Xerxes Society, and national experts say that butterflies in particular are in crisis situations,” Schneider said. “Locally, people are noticing that there are very few when there should be hundreds of them on floral areas right now. The populations continue to decline. We really need to stop using bee killing pesticides so they can recover.”

The movement toward pollinator-friendly practices has gained speed in the last few years, with several counties and cities adopting resolutions geared toward enhancing pollinator habitat.

“More and more communities are jumping on board,” Schneider said.

communities that have passed them, and school districts and counties have also jumped on board. We need now for them to implement action plans.

It’s really great that they pass resolutions, and the next step is to implement practices that help protect pollinators, encourage communities to step up to the plate and develop an action plan that will make difference.”

The festival also has an extraordinary music lineup, including Chris Koza & Rogue Valley, Trapper Schoepp & the Shades and Javier & the Waybacks, emceed by Lori Barbero of Babes in Toyland. In addition to live performances throughout the day, the festival will include honey and pollinator awards, honey tasting, locally sourced food trucks, numerous creative art displays and interactive games. In addition to the Pollinator Friendly Alliance, bee experts will include Bee Lab’s Dr. Daniel Cariveau, Dr. Vera Krischik, Bee Atlas, Great River Greening, Pesticide Action Network, Pollinate Minnesota and the Washington Conservation District. At some point, community leaders who

helped passed pollinator-friendly resolutions will receive special awards from State Auditor Rebecca Otto.

Above all, Schneider hopes the festival will bring awareness to the struggle of pollinators in combination with a fun evening.

“The main angle is, this is a party with purpose,” Schneider said. “People can feel like if they didn’t necessarily do something in the last year that was great to help pollinators and they wanted to, they can learn how they can help here. It’s dog friendly, kid friendly; you learn something, it’s fun and you’re supporting pollinator conservation. All of these experts in their field will be available to answer their questions. If they want to know whats happening to butterflies or what plants to plant, they can find out. It’s really an art and music festival for the bees.”

HOP HARVEST: Lift Bridge hosts hop picking party to create fresh brew FROM PAGE 1

Tickets are $5, which will include the first beer, or two root beer tickets. Ticket holders can take a free tour of the brewery at noon, and the first band, Dang Ol’ Tri’Ole strikes up at 12:45 p.m., followed by a hop picking relay and participation in the brewing process, followed by several other bands (Harbor Drive Hookup, Kind Country and the Burbillies).

The idea to have a community hop-picking event was Hall’s.

“I grew up here, but I spent time on the west coast, working for brewery out of California,” he said. “Having local access to hops, I was just intrigued. It was specific to that area, and it was fun experience. I’m looking to bring that back here.”

Lift Bridge began brewing locally grown hops five years ago, working with Hippity Hop Farm in Forest Lake. That farm eventually closed, and the brewery shifted to working with its current hops supplier, John Brach of Stone Hill Farm in West Lakeland Township.

“We started this about five years ago, working with local farmers,” Hall said. “With the resurgence of craft beer, there’s been interest in not only brewing but supplying local hops. There was a hop shortage in 2008 that made the news. With the growth of craft breweries in Minnesota, there was an interest in growing hops.”

The “Pickin’ and Grinnin” event usually falls within the first couple weeks of September because that’s when hops have ripened enough to pick. The hops grow on bines that can get up to 15 feet tall (bines are differentiated from vines by the tiny hairs they use to climb up structures). The bines are often supported by ropes or wires. The process of harvesting the hops can be intensive, Hall said.

“The hop industry has grown to where there are huge farms, but here they’re small and a lot of the work is done by hand,” he said. “When they’re ready to harvest, we cut the rope or the wire, use a machine to remove cones from the vine (John built a

hop picker; before that we were doing a lot of work by hand) which is a little easier because then we just go through and pick out leaves and clusters of hops that didn’t get removed adequately from the bine. We pick roughly 400 pounds; it’s quite a lot of work. It probably would take a person an hour or so to pick a pound of hops. So instead we’ve decided to throw a party. Over

the years we’ve had this event, friends come out to the brewery, and we have close to 1,000 people filter through throughout the day. It’s not as reliant on people picking the hops, but bring John will bring in 100 or so pounds so people can experience what it is to pick hops, see hops and smell hops.”

During the event, Brach and helpers will bring trailers full of hop bines. The bines are up to 15 feet long, and guests will assist in picking and gathering the hop cones from the length of the vine. Guests may also get a chance to assist in creating the Harvestor brew, and to observe the process up close.

“We’ll be brewing that day, so it’s kind of a neat day to come down,” Hall said. “Usually tours are on weekends when we’re not actually brewing.”

After it’s brewed, Hall said that the Harvestor brew will have a few notable differences from more typical beers.

“When we brew wet hop beer we tend to showcase the hops,” Hall said. “Hop forward beer is similar to pale ale.Wet hops are unique because they differ on the region where they’re grown. We use a variety called Cascade. It’s a fairly common hop, with notes of grapefruit and citrus, but in wet hop form it has an earthy flavor with a green herbal note.”

As of 2016, Lift Bridge will also soon celebrate its five-year anniversary as the oldest taproom in Minnesota. A market study from CBRE reported that 45 taprooms in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area have opened since state legislators passed a taproom law in 2011. Before that, breweries were not allowed to sell their own beverages on site because of strict producer/distributor/retailer roles. Although the bill that changed the norm was informally called the “Surly Bill,” Lift Bridge was first to be established as a taproom.

The city of Wyoming residents celebrate Stagecoach Days in honor of its history as one of the first stagecoach stops on the way to Duluth.

Wyoming prepares for Stagecoach Days

WYOMING – The annual Stagecoach Days festival is expanding this September – this year adding a fullblown kids carnival with rides to add to the fun.

The Wyoming Fire Relief Association began running the festival four years ago after the Wyoming Area Business Association (WABA) decided not to continue coordinating it.

“Before it was [run by] the city, and then Wyoming Area Business Association, but it fizzled away,” said Joe Kuskey, deputy chief of the Wyoming Fire Department. “The fire department talked about it and decided to take it over and run things, and that’s where we are today.”

The festival has been ever expanding since then.

“Every year Stagecoach Days continues to grow,” Kuskey said. “The fire department was very fortunate to be given an opportunity to coordinate Wyoming Stagecoach Days from an already successful event that WABA and the City of Wyoming created. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be in the position we are in today with a weekend long city celebration to celebrate our great city and continue the Wyoming Stagecoach Days tradition.”The festival began as a single day event, inspired by the history of the town’s first white settlers, from Pennsylvania, in 1855, according to the Stagecoach Days website. The town was named after the Wyoming Valley, near many of their homes back east.

When a stagecoach route was established between St. Paul and Duluth, the city of Wyoming was the first stop, where travelers stayed the night and horse teams were traded out.

The festival has grown into a three-day event, and this year it has added a carnival, which includes several kiddie rides, a giant slide, carnival games and an

assortment of food trucks providing typical fair food such as cheese curds, hamburgers and more.

Around 30 individuals from the fire department work together to raise the funds and plan the festival every year. The fire department spends much of their time leading up to the event locating sponsors for the festival.

“All we do is knock on doors, go around to local businesses, a lot of them already know,” Kuskey said. “This year has been our best year for donations.”

Kuskey was particularly thrilled about the new

sponsors this year, such as the business Equipment Transport from Forest Lake, which will help sponsor this year’s beer garden.

In addition, the festival will bring back many favorites from the past: local food and merchandise vendors, new fire trucks on display, as well as new ATVs from Polaris, a pancake breakfast, bingo, a car show, live music and more. Live performers include local Wyoming band Bad Weather Rocks, one-man band Marty Sonnek, interactive performance The Rowdy Cowboy Show and alternative rock band Uncle Chunk.

Kuskey said that so far the festival has raised approximately $15,000 so far, but donations are still coming in.

Local businesses and residents have shown excitement in contributing to the biggest community festival of the year.

“It brings the community together, it’s a big thing,” Kuskey said. “You’ve got to have a city celebration.”

And Kuskey was quick to give credit where credit is due: “The biggest thing is thanking the community members and businesses,” he said. “Without their support for the fire department and the city, this is impossible.

This wouldn’t exist. And thanks to all of our firefighters who put in a lot of work. We do it because we enjoy it, and we know the community has a great time doing it.”

Since the event will take place on the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Kuskey said there will also be a tribute to the victims.

Stagecoach Days will take place Sept. 9 through 11 in downtown Wyoming, with fireworks in Goodview Park on Saturday night. The Forest Lake Police Department reported the following incidents:

Arrest/Citation • On Aug. 2, police received a report that a vehicle had crashed through the window of Taco Bell on Broadway Ave. When officers arrived, several witnesses pointed out the driver, a 35-year-old Forest Lake man. He was walking around near the vehicle and would not at first answer any questions about the crash or medical issues. Later, he claimed that a vehicle had struck the rear of his car, pushing him into the restaurant window, but the condition of the vehicle’s bumper was not consistent with that claim. He was turned over to the hospital staff for evaluation. A citation was issued to the driver for violation of an instruction permit.

• Police received a report from a Forest Lake resident Aug. 2 that a 45-yearold Forest Lake man had come to his house and threatened him if he testified against him in court. The man continued yelling even from outside the apartment, and the complainant delivered two videos that documented the suspect’s language and behavior.

The suspect was arrested for violating a no-contact order, as well as for disorderly conduct and witness tampering.

He was transported to Washington County Jail.

Other • On Aug. 6, there was a report of a crash on I-35 due to debris in the traffic lane. A vehicle had struck the debris and was observed on the left

shoulder; when police arrived, there were two vehicles on the left shoulder and two on the right. There was a report that a male in one of the vehicles had been possibly impaled by a 2X4 that had come through the windshield. Officers located the vehicle and victim, who was unable to speak and holding onto a 2X4 in his left side. Police assisted in moving him and found no impalement, though there had been an impact on his sternum. North Memorial Hospital arrived by air and the patient was transferred to them.

The Stillwater Police Department reported the following incidents:

Arrest/Citation • A 44-year-old Stillwater man was arrested for domestic assault after he struck his 15-year-old son. The two were arguing about the fact that the son had drank some alcohol. The son didn’t have any way to call police because the dad had taken his cell phone away. The dad called the 15-year-old’s mother and told her to come pick him up, because he didn’t want to deal with him. That’s when she saw the son had a bump on his face and they called the police.

• A 21-year-old Stillwater man reported he had been robbed when he went to buy $200 worth of marijuana on Aug. 11, in the 200 block of Oak Street W. The two suspects were a 25-year-old Lake Elmo man and a 53-year-old man with no permanent address, who were arrested for robbery and a fifth degree controlled substance crime. These two men claimed that they were the ones who were going to buy marijuana, and

that they stole marijuana from the victim. They were found to have a quantity of marijuana that would probably be worth $200, and apprehended by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. They had $200 worth of marijuana and no cash, suggesting that they did in fact rip the “victim” off, but they did not steal money, they stole drugs.

They were held for the robbery, and both charged with simple robbery. The case is still under investigation.

• On Aug. 14 around 12:30 a.m., officers were called to the 500 block of Oak Street W. in regards to accident. Upon arrival, the officer had contact with a 26-year-old Stillwater man who said he had too much to drink and lost control of his vehicle, striking another car.

The man was arrested for DWI. There was moderate damage to the other vehicle.

• On Aug. 14 around 4:25 p.m., a 60-yearold Somerset man was arrested for third degree DWI after officers received a driving complaint in the area of the Stillwater Lift Bridge. The suspect vehicle was being followed by a witness, who observed as it struck a parked car near Third and Pine. The vehicle was stopped by officers in the area of Highway 36 and Oakgreen.

There were strong indications that the suspect driver was intoxicated.

His preliminary breath test showed he was over the legal limit, so he was transported to Washington County Jail where he agreed to breath test sample with a result of 0.21.

• On Aug. 14 at about 7:30 p.m., a 26-year-old North St. Paul man who

had been driving on Highway 36 west was issued a citation for careless driving and no Minnesota drivers license.

Other • Officers were called to the 1400 block of Greeley Street S. on Aug. 13 in regards to a one-year-old male stuck in an elevator. He got his finger jammed in door, and was ultimately released and taken to hospital for evaluation.

• There was a report of a cat in the library on Aug. 13. A community service officer put a trap in the area of the library and an orange cat was caught in it. The officer could not find any owner, so the animal was brought to the Woodbury Humane Society.

• A 35-year-old Stillwater man was charged with domestic assault after officers were called to the 1800 block of Highland Road Aug. 14 around 3 p.m.

The incident started much earlier in the day, shortly after midnight, when the husband and wife were arguing over an email account that the husband was unaware his wife had been using. During the course of the argument, he hit his wife in the head with an iPad. When she tried to leave, he grabbed hold of her and pulled her back into the residence. The suspect continued to be physical, calling her names, and ultimately left the residence sometime between 6 and 6:30 in the morning. She reported it after the fact, and he was not present when the complaint was made. Officers were unable to locate him; there is currently a warrant out for his arrest.

Forest Lake community to hold picnic supporting police force

FOREST LAKE – On Thursday, Sept.

8, community members of Forest Lake will host a picnic and ice cream social at City Hall to recognize the service of the Forest Lake Police Department. The event is open to the public and will take place 5:30-8 p.m.

Several members of the community gathered to plan and produce the event, including Mayor Stev Stegner. Dr. Richard Ottomeyer of Ottomeyer Clinics, along with Bob Meisner, came up with the idea.

“One thing that we are doing that will be really fun is that we have a stretched canvas banner that was done by Stev Stegner stretched over frame that will be signable to support our people in service,” Ottomeyer said. “Everyone will be able to sign it, and then we’ll be able to hang up in the foyer area. Just a little show of solidarity; they do so much for us.”

The event comes not long after a spontaneous roadside rally in Forest Lake that was organized to thank police for their efforts. Ottomeyer said that he also reached out to this group, who

he said are eager to attend. The event will include tours of the fire and police department, while the community gathering will take place in the second floor community room.

Famous Dave’s has donated two turkeys for turkey sandwiches, and will also provide pulled pork sandwiches.

Daniela’s will contribute free gelato.

In addition to celebrating the efforts of the local police, the event will also honor the police officers from across the country that have lost their lives in the line of duty this year.

“To date, there have been 26 police men and women that have been killed in the line of duty for 2016,” Ottomeyer said. “At 7 p.m. we will release 26 balloons, and hope there is no reason to release any more before the date.”

Ottomeyer said that local business and citizens have already been generous in donating to the cause, and hopes that the picnic can become an annual event, tentatively to take place the first Thursday following Labor Day. Ottomeyer said the planners expect approximately 200 attendees.

“Everyone’s welcome, it’s kid friendly, and we’re hoping for a good turnout,” Ottomeyer said.

Council: More Cuts Needed

STILLWATER – During budget talks last Tuesday, Stillwater officials challenged city staff to cut still more from a proposed $18 million budget for 2017 that staff has already trimmed.

Preliminary funding requests submitted by department heads came in at an amount that would have exceeded the 2016 levy by $731,216 or 8.75%, excluding capital project requests. City Administrator Tom McCarty said cuts reduced that increase to $510,843 or 6.1% above the 2016 levy.

As proposed, the total 2017 property tax levy (operating levy + debt service levy) will increase by $570,314 or 4.75% over 2016.

Council members are hoping that in the coming weeks, staff will be able to further reduce the percentage of increase to 4%. If no further cuts are made, the impact on a $224,000 home would be a hike of $68 in the city portion of property taxes, according to Finance Director Sharon Harrison. By comparison, a $97,000 home would see a $27 boost in city property taxes.

During the nearly three hour meeting, McCarty reviewed departmental budget requests as council members questioned expenditures and called for more belt tightening.

Pressing for details on library operations, Council Member Tom Weidner asked whether Stillwater Public Library staff has ever done an analysis with Washington County to see what would happen if the library’s 14.5 FTEs were county employees. Library Director Lynne

Bertalmio said the topic has been discussed many times since 1984. “We work pretty constantly on finding cooperative services we can provide and ways to cut down on our costs by doing things together with the County,” she responded. The library board will revisit the issue when the contract with the Washington County library system expires at the end of this year, she added.

“Every time I talk about library operations, I hear that I don’t like libraries and that’s not the case,” Weidner continued. “We go through and blindly agree to increase [the budget] based upon whatever is requested. . . We talk about the operation of this library being intertwined with the Washington County library system.

Without researching that, I would say that I’m not interested in increasing the budget.”

Weidner also questioned the police department budget, particularly the inclusion of a school resource officer at a cost of $80,000, which the department is hoping will be funded in part by a COPS grant. Police Chief John Gannaway explained the department is currently short four officers and on minimum staffing of two officers per shift.

“We’re like the little dutch boy plugging holes in the dike,” he commented.

Councilmember Doug Menikheim challenged his peers to “back away from the percentages and look at services provided by the city. What do we lose by trimming?” he asked. “If we get [the levy] down does that make the city any better?”

McCarty said reducing the

levy increase to 4% or less would require a reduction of about $115,000. Staff will come back with more information on further cuts on Sept. 6. The council must adopt a preliminary 2017 budget and certify the maximum city property tax levy to the county by Sept. 30, 2016.

Also on Aug. 16, the council: - approved the final plat, final planned unit development and development agreement for The Ponds at Heifort Hills, a 24-home subdivision on Neal Avenue; - denied an application for the annual Stillwater Log Run race for Sept. 17, 2016 based on staff recommendation citing concerns over past management of the event; - granted a license to Stillwater Area Scholastic Cycling Association for use of Brown’s Creek Park for limited mountain biking for a one-year trial; - approved a Lowell Park remembrance walk for Sept. 10 for Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, an organization for families who have lost babies; - passed an ordinance opting out of the requirements of a new Minnesota law permitting landowners to place mobile residential dwellings on their property to serve as a temporary family health care dwellings; - discussed plans for an Ice Castle in Lowell Park, directing staff to work with organizers to ensure there’s ample room to keep crowds safe and moving through the park, and to make sure that Hockey Day Minnesota coordinators are involved in planning. A draft agreement will be brought back for council action.

BBB offers Student of Integrity Scholarships The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Minnesota and North Dakota is offering Student of Integrity Scholarships for high school students entering their senior year.

This year, $13,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded.

The scholarships recognize and promote ethics and integrity in young people, and are awarded to students who have demonstrated a clear understanding of the importance of ethics in their personal choices and actions.

To apply, students are asked to write an essay of at least 1,000 words or a video that is at least 30 seconds long.
