If Ebenezer Scrooge wore flannel, drank Leinenkugels and elongated his O’s, his story might be something like “A ‘Don’t Hug Me’ Christmas Carol.”

Masquers Theatre Company will present this comedic musical, which delivers Charles Dickens’ classic story with a Minnesota twist, at the Forest Lake American Legion beginning on Dec. 4.

The partnership between the American Legion and Masquers Theatre

Company goes back years—according to the director of the show, Janice Murphy Roman, a few alumni from the theater once composed an original musical to perform at the Legion. When the Legion approached them once again about performing a holiday dinner show, “A ‘Don’t Hug Me’ Christmas Carol” seemed like the perfect choice, since they have performed two other shows from the Minnesota-themed “Don’t Hug Me” series of musicals in the past.

Set in the fictitious backwoods Minnesota town of Bunyan Bay, the

musical follows the story of Gunner, the owner of a rustic country bar.

“Gunner is sort of a curmudgeon; he doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas,” Roman said.

After quarreling with his wife about Christmas celebrations, Gunner takes his Ski-Doo out on the frozen lake, falls through the ice and slips into a coma.

During this coma, Gunner is visited by a mysterious figure who shows him the Christmases of his past, present and future to try to win him over into the holiday spirit.

“The music is fun,” Roman said.

Stillwater sixth-graders may be shifting schools JACKIE BUSSJAEGER STAFF WRITER

In order to solve a few different problems with space in its middle schools, the Stillwater School District has proposed an early transition to junior high for a group of its sixth-graders.

The South Washington County School District is set to take control of Valley Crossing Community School in 2016, which means that there would be no longer be sixth-grade classes offered within the Stillwater district to those Stillwater area students who otherwise would have attended that school. However, since parents and students have expressed interest in remaining within the district, the idea of creating a space for them at Oak-Land

Jr. High emerged.

Meanwhile, with a projected sixth-grade enrollment of 800 students, Lake Elmo Elementary is in danger of overcrowding. Moving the Lake Elmo sixth-graders to Oak-Land would help the elementary school better control its student capacity.

Oak-Land’s principal, Andy Fields, generated this proposal in partnership with Lake Elmo principal Stephen Gorde. “We looked at those two dynamics and asked if there was something we could do to help,” Fields said.

“It’s a really innovative idea,” said Community Engagement Manager Carissa Keister. “Two principals came together to come up with a solution. I know the parents at Valley Crossing

are really interested in this idea because the sixth-graders there have been in a standalone program. Some parents have even been advocating for this for years.”

Oak-Land Jr. High currently enrolls grades 7-9. Adjusting the curriculum to include classes for sixth-graders would allow new teaching opportunities for faculty and help the school adapt to eventually adding general sixth-grade enrollment.

“I think the spaces we have look and feel a lot more appropriate to a 12-year-old than an elementary school does,” Fields said. The early transition will allow sixth-graders access to a full science lab and a bigger music space, as well as access to the pool and their own lockers.

“And the Valley Crossing

and Lake Elmo students will get to interact. I think that’s a positive,” said Fields.

Keister has been involved with facilitating meetings and collecting parent feedback about the idea.

“Largely, the Valley Crossing parents are interested and excited about the idea,” Keister said. “For the Lake Elmo parents, it came as a bit of a shock because we haven’t been talking about it to them for as long. The first time we approached them, it was new information.”

After the schools are finished analyzing the results of the surveys, Keister said they will likely conduct further parent meetings.

“We hope to have a decision

by January,” she said. “But this

conversation is to give parents a chance to talk about it and share concerns and ideas.”

As yet, the idea is simply a proposal, and the schools are in the process of collecting parent feedback regarding the transition.

“The results have not come in yet,” Fields said. “It’s still in a proposal stage and by no means has any decision been made yet.

You want to make sure that you give students and staff time to prepare for a transition.”

The proposed transition would take place during the 2016-2017 academic year. The schools are still seeking parent feedback about the transition.

Katrina Everett-Carey: Pets and silhouettes According to artist Katrina Everett-Carey, life itself is her biggest inspiration. Motivation to paint can come from anywhere, especially from animals.

Based in Forest Lake, Everett-Carey had been painting for a number of years before she decided to sell some of her work. She attended high school in Blaine, where she took a lot of art classes and continued to develop her interest in painting.

Today, her subject matter is extensive.

“It’s contemporary; a lot of silhouettes, a lot of nature,” she said.

And a lot of pets, as well. Everett-Carey receives many of her commissions from pet owners who want to commemorate their beloved animals. A pet owner herself—counting a cat, a bird and a snake among the mix—she works from home full-time and completes between four and five paintings each week.

In her spare time, she spends time with her kids, her fiancé and her animals. “The bird tends to like watching me paint,” she said. “He’s not happy unless he’s sitting on my arm.”

In addition to the steady stream of commissions, she follows her own varied interests—most recently a colorful representation of the Eiffel Tower. Depending on the size, her paintings sell at anywhere between $30 and $100.

“I like to keep them reasonable so that a range of people can enjoy them,” she said.

Besides selling her artwork on Etsy, Everett-Carey brings her paintings to numerous local art fairs. She recently placed some of her work in Anja’s Boutique in Annandale.

“I found this lady who was having an art fair, and she ended up asking me to consign in her shop,” she said. “And you don’t say no to an opportunity like that.” Everett-Carey appeared in the boutique to do a live painting on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 28.

Her plans for the future? She wants to expand her subjects to include portraits of people. “I’d like to get in some more stores,” she said. “Someday I’d like to have a painting in a gallery, but I’ve got to work my way up there.”

Porsche Club honors the ‘perfect sports car’ JACKIE BUSSJAEGER STAFF WRITER

The Nord Stern Porsche Club is the branch of the national Porsche Club of America that caters to owners in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Members of this club adore the unique automobile that has its roots in Germany. What is so special about these cars?

“Porsche cars have set the automotive performance standard for over 60 years,” wrote Nord Sten Vice President Paul Ingebrigtsen in an email interview. “They are appreciated for their aesthetics, handling and durability. They are engaging and comfortable to drive and they make a great sound.

You can drive a Porsche to a race track on the weekend, flog it for two days, and drive it home. There aren’t many cars that can do that.”

Created by German engineer Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, the vehicle was meant to embody the perfect sports car. According to Ingebrigtsen, there are more than 700 members in the Nord Stern chapter, most of them residents of the Twin Cities area, but some of them residing as far away as the Dakotas, Iowa and Canada.

Besides offering a place for Porsche enthusiasts to talk shop, the club also offers driver training and education as well as social events such as the annual fall colors drive and full-on racing competitions.

“We just completed an ‘Escape to the Black Hills’ with over 300 cars from all over the country participating,” Ingebrigtsen wrote. “We also offer a great opportunity for those who feel the need for speed and want to learn to drive their Porsches safely at speed on a race track.

We hold driver’s training events with qualified instructors twice a year and driver’s education weekends at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota and Road America in Wisconsin.

There is also a national Club Racing program for drivers who want to get a bit more serious.”

The club membership is diverse in interests, but at the core members share their passion for the automobile.

“Like any enthusiast group, we love our cars,” Ingebrigtsen wrote. “The cars are mostly an excuse for a number of really great people to get together, hang out, talk cars, set the world right, and generally have fun. Many in the club will tell you, ‘It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.’”

The Nord Stern Porsche Club is focused on recruiting new members, particularly young people from the next generation of Porsche drivers.

“Like with any club, the longer it is around, the older the membership [grows],” Ingebrigtsen wrote. “Nord Stern has been around for over 50 years. We now have second-, and even third-generation family members carrying on the tradition. So it is great to see younger people come into the club. Some may think that a Porsche is not affordable for a young person, but the truth is that most of us started out with an older, less costly model and you can still do the same.

For a few thousand dollars, you can join the fun. For our driver’s training and driver’s education track events, you don’t even have to drive a

Porsche.”

Ingebrigtsen said that belonging to the club is valuable for its connection to others who appreciate the variety and uniqueness of Porsche vehicles, and anyone who is interested is welcome.

“We don’t take ourselves

too seriously and we welcome anyone interested in Porsches,” Ingebrigtsen wrote. “It is a volunteer organization, so everyone pitches in to make the events happen. You get out of it what you put in.”

T

his Thanksgiving I attempted (for the first time) to recreate a dressing (stuffing) recipe that has been a tradition in our family for generations. Using a general list of ingredients and instructions that my mother had previously shared with my sister-in-law, who included them in a family cookbook, I began to strategize how I could successfully prepare the dish.

Recalling some distant memories of Thanksgiving, I remember watching my mom and dad in the kitchen toasting bread and using a handcranked food grinder to methodically combine a variety of ingredients.

I considered using a modern food processor, but for some reason I’ve always thought that a manual food Angle of grinder was as important to this View recipe as the secret ingredient that took years for my mother to get my Paul Dols grandmother (on my dad’s side) to finally reveal.

I found an old grinder in an antique store in downtown Stillwater and using some elbow grease, steel wool and hot water I witnessed its transition from a questionable old hunk of metal into a viable kitchen appliance. Once all of the necessary ingredients were ready, I began the process of feeding the toast, celery, cabbage, onions and cooked giblets into the grinder.

I was pleased (and relieved) when the first batch was successfully ground up and deposited in a pan. At more than 100-years-old, the antique proved to be the perfect tool for the job. I admired its robust simplicity as I easily cranked the raw ingredients through its blades. While not exactly like the dressing I remember my mom making, the finished product was close and in my opinion, pretty good. Now that I’ve given it a shot, my next attempt might have to include a little more of that secret ingredient. In a society filled with such an overwhelming abundance of high-tech gadgets, it was refreshing to find legitimate usefulness in such a low-tech piece of equipment.

A recent round of necessary software and computer updates here at the Press illustrated to me how challenging and tricky it can be to effectively manage and maneuver through a continuously changing technological landscape. With powerful software and hardware companies in control and our increasing dependence on their products, it can sometimes feel like you’re being lured into a trap.

The question of whether technology frees or traps us was debated by participants in the Great American Think-Off in New York Mills, Minnesota earlier this year. On one end of the spectrum, contestant Marsh Muirhead stated that technology is racing ahead of the problems it creates and that we are “no happier, no more secure than when chased by the tiger, freezing in our cave.” Technology proponent David Lappako argued that “while technology can be incredibly aggravating, compared to the alternative, it is what enables us to do more of what we dream to do, and with immensely greater ease.” Personally, I strive to be educated and open minded about the latest technological trends and updates, but am also reluctant to abandon what has been time-tested and proven to work.

Along with the Thanksgiving side dish experimentation, I also volunteered to cook a turkey this year.

I had only done it once before and that was several years ago, so I knew I had to do some research to prepare for the task. In the process, I discovered an astonishing amount of information and opinions on the internet about the best way to prepare, cook and carve a turkey. Sifting through a number of tutorials, I chose the techniques I had a reasonable chance of successfully executing. Using information technology to help accomplish a time honored tradition, the final process ended up being a hybrid of a few different tutorials and based on the clean plates and scooped up leftovers, the turkey actually appeared to be quite well received.

Theft â&#x20AC;˘ An incident was reported on Clydesdale Curve S on Nov. 21 involving a suspect resisting arrest for a felony burglary. Officers pursued the 23-year-old Forest Lake man to his home and picked him up to transfer to Isanti County. After a medical incident, the man was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Peter F. Riehle Age 83, of Stillwater, passed away on November 27, 2015.

He was born on November 8, 1932 in Foxholm, North Dakota, the son of Charles and Catherine (Streitz) Riehle. Peter graduated from The University of North Dakota with a degree in chemical engineering.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elsie (McNeil) Riehle; children, Brenda (Michael) Taylor of South Dakota, Kathryn (Terrence) North of Florida, Sherri (John) Hardy of Wisconsin, Peter (Susan) of Minnesota, Mary (James) Cincotta of Wisconsin, John (Phyllis) of Wisconsin, Mark (Tina) of Minnesota, James (Barbara) of Minnesota; 31 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Catherine Scherf, Dennis Riehle, and Paul Riehle. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Peter Jr.; infant daughter, Elizabeth; grandson, Stephen Taylor; and brothers, Daniel and John Riehle.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 7, 2015 with visitation one hour prior to the service at Woodbury Lutheran Church Oak Hill Campus, 9050 60th St. N, Stillwater. The food drive, created and run by the NLA student councils, brought in more than 800 donations in just a week, surpassing the set goal of 500 items. The North Lakes Academy student council, led by seniors Zoe Deal and Ashley Millerbernd (president and vice president, respectively), secretary Heather Quarnstrom and treasurer Harrison Marchio, is looking to increase community service initiatives this school year. The food drive, their fi rst event, brought in 200 donations at the upper school. The success of the drive at the upper school is largely due to student council members Braxton Brown and Crystal Stafford, who spearheaded the event in their fi rst hour classroom and beyond, helping to raise close to 90 donations in their fi rst hour class.

While student council members at the upper school are pleased with the response at their campus, they are even more impressed by the success of the middle school food drive.

Student council member Will Tiedeman mentioned he is “truly impressed that the middle-schoolers were able to rally together and collect hundreds of items.” With a whopping 600 donations collected, the middle school was the clear winner of the food drive; students were awarded a trophy along with substantial bragging rights. group that raised the most items at the middle school was led by student council adviser and social studies teacher Forrest Florczak, whose class brought in a total of 258 items.

All 800 nonperishable items, amounting to 720 lbs., were donated to the Family Pathways Food Shelf in Forest Lake earlier this week.

Music Department gearing up for the holidays The Forest Lake Area Music Department has undergone some exciting changes over the past few years, and this December, the greater Forest Lake community will have a number of opportunities to see and hear the progress of these ensembles.

The fi rst formal concert of the season will be Dec. 7, featuring Symphonic Winds, Sinfonia Orchestra and Cantorei in their annual Winter Concert. Director Alyssa Ellson is especially excited to conduct one her favorite scores, “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

The orchestra will perform Leroy Anderson’s traditional holiday tune, “Sleigh Ride,” and the band has been working hard to get the lyric piece “Serenity” ready to go. In addition to other pieces each group will perform, the Christmas Festival will be performed as a mass grand finale.

One of the biggest visible changes to the music program is the addition of ninth-grade students to the high school curriculum. Now in the third year of this practice, the orchestra has more than doubled in size as

the ninth-grade string players from each junior high meet with the high school String Orchestra each day during fi rst hour. This 65-piece ensemble is ready to raise the roof with repertoire that has been prepared by student teacher Casey Braastad, who is completing his studies at the

University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho.

This year the ninthgrade choir students from each junior high combined for the first time to form one large choir that meets at the end of each day at the high school under the direction of Alyssa Ellson. The group will be debuting at the

Holiday Concert on Dec. 14. Audience members at this concert will also hear performances by the Concert Band and String Orchestra. A combined grand finale singalong will round out the evening.

All concerts are free, open to the public, and begin at 7 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.

DAN CREMISINO The U.S. Forest Service has some important safety tips for those Americans traveling into their national forests in search of the perfect holiday tree.

“Bringing home a tree from a national forest is a wonderful holiday tradition,” said U.S. Forest Service Eastern Regional Forester Kathleen Atkinson.

“We want to make sure families are safe this holiday season as they venture into the forest to find the perfect tree - be aware of changing weather conditions and unfamiliar surroundings, dress accordingly and always follow safe cutting practices.”

Each year, many Forest Service offices sell permits that allow individuals to cut a fresh tree on national forest lands. The permit program helps the agency thin stands that have a concentration of small diameter trees.

This year the Forest Service is offering one free holiday tree cutting permit to fourth graders who present a valid Every Kid in a Park pass at participating Forest Service units. The Forest Service is among a number of federal agencies supporting the administration’s Every Kid in a Park initiative; more information can be found at www.everykidinapark.gov.

Here are some reminders and tips for cutting your tree: Travel with a companion and always tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back.

Remember to take your tree-cutting permit and a map of the location.

Make sure that your chosen tree is on national forest land; respect private property owners by not trespassing.

With a cast of five, Roman said that the most challenging part of the show has been handling the amount of work each person has to contribute during the entire length of the play.

“Since it’s a small cast, everyone has a lot to do,” she said. “It’s a lot of lines to learn, and a lot of dances and songs. In a bigger musical, maybe one or two characters have most the dialogue, and if you’re in the chorus, you get maybe one or two lines. But in this production, everyone has equal weight.”

The office is collecting canned and nonperishable food donations as well as monetary contributions at its office at 56 E. Broadway, Suite 104. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays to accept donations and registrations, but a bin is located outside of the office to accept donations at any time.

Family Pathways reports that one in six people, including more than one in five children, face hunger daily in east central Minnesota. The education system is very different today than when one-room schools prevailed in the 19th and early 20th century. Computers, iPads, and the Internet â&#x20AC;&#x201D; this takes education into another world.

When it comes right down to it, though, it is the teachers who make the impression and help make learning happen for the students â&#x20AC;&#x201D; today as well as yesterday. A longtime teacher in Washington Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rural schools was Amos Hill.

Hill was born Oct. 20, 1848 and came to Stillwater in May 1856 with his parents. The family eventually traveled to Arcola and settled there, where his father engaged with Martin Mower as millwright in the sawmill. Hillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father died the following year, but the family continued living at Arcola.

At age 18, he enlisted in Company F, 45th Iowa Infantry and fought in the Civil War. The 45th Iowa Infantry was organized at Keokuk, Iowa, and mustered in for 100 days of Federal service on May 25, 1864.

The plan was to raise short-term regiments for service as rear area garrison duty to release veteran troops for Shermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Atlanta Campaign. The 45th Iowa garrisoned strategic points on the Memphis & Charleston Railroad.

The regiment was mustered out at Keokuk on Sept. 15, 1864.

Upon his return to the St. Croix Valley, Hill began his teaching career in the rural schools of Washington County.

For the next 25 years and more, Hill would teach at several different rural schools, including the Arcola School, Hay

Lake School and the Lyman School. In 1890 he donated an American flag to the Lyman School.

In 1898, while teaching at Hay Lake School, Washington County Superintendent of Schools John Q. Mackintosh said of Hill, â&#x20AC;&#x153;He has seen county superintendents come and go; several generations of children have grown to manhood and womanhood and many of the children of his former pupils are now attending this school. Familiarly called Amos by pupil and parent alike, he will long be remembered by those who have made his acquaintance.â&#x20AC;?

Hill retired from teaching and moved in with W.G. Heifort on the Heifort farm just north of Stillwater. He would work delivering milk and cream for Heifort Dairy. He would also be active in the George

Crook Post #69 of the Grand Army of the Republic and attended several GAR National Conventions in the early part of the 20th century.

In early June 1915, Hill suffered a stroke. He was unable to speak and his condition continued to worsen. He fell unconscious and, a few days later on June 12, Amos Hill died. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Stillwater.

The Stillwater Gazette, upon learning of Hillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, commented that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hill was a kindly, loveable personality; he had many friends in Washington County who will regret his passing and who will remember him as a good citizen, a brave soldier and a gentleman.â&#x20AC;?

Rush Line Corridor transit vehicle and route options narrowed At its Nov. 19 meeting, the Rush Line Corridor Policy Advisory Committee narrowed the number of recommended transit vehicle and route alternatives between Forest Lake and Union Depot to four for further study.

The Rush Line Corridor is an 80-mile travel corridor between St. Paul and Hinckley, adjoining 23 urban, suburban and rural communities.

A pre-project development study is underway to analyze bus and rail alternatives in the Rush Line Corridor between Forest Lake and Union Depot in downtown St. Paul. The study will identify a transit vehicle and route option for adoption as the corridor’s locally preferred alternative.

Of the recommended transit vehicle and route alternatives identified, only one extends all the way to Forest Lake from Union Depot in St. Paul.

Jobs, housing, regional connectivity and the number of activity centers is highest overall in the southern end of the corridor.

Following the Policy Advisory Committee’s approval, the Rush Line study will now move into a comprehensive review of the selected alternatives. Maplewood Mayor Nora Slawick said, “The next phase of study is highly detailed and will evaluate ridership, costs, station locations, frequency of service and environmental impacts.”

The additional study will include several modifications to the initial recommended transit vehicle and route alternatives based on an extensive community-input process.

Additions include: • Reviewing hybrid rail solutions that include smaller vehicles.

• Reviewing utilization of a shared guideway through constrained right-of-way areas.

• Additional study of a dedicated bus rapid transit/light rail alternative to connect Phalen Village and downtown White Bear Lake (generally along White Bear Avenue) as a potential alternative to the county/ rail right-of-way.

• Including more defined impacts to natural environment and cultural resources.

hardt. “We’re currently focused on balancing the technical considerations of a transit line with the practical considerations of getting people to jobs, school, shopping and other activities.”

More than 850 people participated in 40 community engagement events such as pop-up meetings, formal open houses and business presentations during the first phase of study.

Community members expressed a wide range of preferences for transit vehicles and routes.

Preferences include all-day service, cost-effective options, preserving natural spaces, minimizing impacts on personal property and businesses, and connecting people to businesses, services, jobs and education.

Next steps for the study include establishing a stakeholder group to help identify downtown route options. A developer roundtable will seek input related to job access and economic development opportunities on transit vehicle and route options. Public engagement will continue throughout the entire study.

Transit vehicle and route alternatives recommended for further study include: • Dedicated guideway bus rapid transit (BRT) on county/rail right-ofway between St. Paul and Forest Lake.

• Light rail transit (LRT) or diesel multiple unit (DMU) on county/ rail right-of-way between St. Paul and White Bear Lake.

• Arterial bus rapid transit (BRT) generally along White Bear Avenue between St. Paul and White Bear Lake.

• Dedicated guideway BRT/LRT between Phalen Village and downtown White Bear Lake, generally along White Bear Avenue.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Christmas tree sale The Stillwater Elks Christmas tree sale will take place at Lily Lake Tennis Courts on Greeley Avenue in Stillwater from Nov. 27-Dec. 19. The sale will be open Monday through Friday, 4 p.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. To contact the Elks, call 651-439-5276.

Outdoor skating programs Scandia’s outdoor Wojtowicz Skating Rink will offer winter recreation skating programs beginning in January. The six-week Learn to Skate program is structured to teach recreational skating to children of different abilities and is taught by a trained coach.

The Learn to Skate program for beginners is directed at children who have little or infrequent skating experience. More advanced skaters will work on a variety of skating skills. This year the six-week Pleasure Skating program will also be offered. A volunteer adult will be available to provide supervision and guidance while the participants enjoy practicing their skills. Advance registration is required and classes will fill up quickly. Register by Dec. 23 to avoid a late fee. Adult foster care meeting An informational meeting regarding adult foster care in the county will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the Lower Level Room 12 in the Government Center in Stillwater. Washington County requires interested people to attend an informational meeting, which will provide an overview of the foster care program.

For those who decide to become licensed to provide foster care for adults, the licensing process begins at no cost to them.

In addition to meeting state licensing requirements, foster families should be able to provide the following: • a stable family atmosphere (can be a one- or two-parent home); • a positive attitude; • adequate housing, whether a house or apartment; • love and support for the children or adults in

their care.

Before families can be licensed, they must undergo a thorough screening process which includes an extensive background check.

Veterans Memorial The groundbreaking for a new Veterans Memorial was held recently in Scandia’s Lilleskogen Park.

While the Scandia Lions Club initiated the project, a community committee has taken it over. A brick structure paying homage to different branches of the military is planned; individual memorials may be purchased at $100 a brick. The committee hopes to raise $2,700 and aims to have the memorial finished

by November 2016.

Controlled prairie burns Washington County Parks is planning to conduct controlled prairie burns in Lake Elmo Park Reserve between Dec. 1 and Dec. 10.

The controlled burns will take one to four hours to accomplish, and will occur on a weekday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The controlled burns are conducted in conjunction with local fire departments and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The prairie burns will only occur when weather conditions permit a safe and effective burn. Trained personnel with firefighting equipment will be on site until the fire is extinguished.

Prairies are complex grassland communities that provide food and cover for birds, pollinators and other wildlife, protect against soil erosion, display beautiful colors throughout the year, and add character to the park landscape. Prairies are primarily managed through controlled burns. Fire stimulates the growth of native plants that are adapted to fire, while simultaneously killing off the woody and exotic plants that would otherwise take over the site.

SCHOOL BRIEFS Columbus student wins Lions peace poster contest Clayton Kavaloski a sixthgrade student at Columbus Elementary, was selected as the local winner in the 28th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest, sponsored by the Columbus Lions Club.

“Peace not war, generosity not greed, empathy not hate, everybody – not just us” was the peace message the student gave with his poster. Kavaloski’s poster was selected by the Columbus Lions for its originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme “Share Peace.”

Kavaloski’s poster was among more than 40,000 entries submitted worldwide for the contest. Lions Clubs International sponsors the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Kavaloski’s poster will now advance to the district level of the international competition.

Chinese administrators visit Scandia Elementary Scandia Elementary was recently visited by 25 school administrators from China. The group of administrators was invited to visit Minnesota through an exchange program from the China Center at the University of Minnesota. Scandia Elementary was one of many stops on the group’s 10-day tour of Minnesota schools.

Ten student council members served as tour guides. The students showed the visitors around the school while explaining what was happening in the classrooms, such as a literacy lesson, reading time or a science project. Many teachers were able to answer questions from the visiting Chinese administrators. The visit ended in a meeting with Scandia Principal Julie Greiman, who

gave the visiting administrators additional time to ask questions about the school. Greiman said that the staff and students at Scandia Elementary were honored to host these guests.

Students participate in hunger walk The Forest Lake Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) participated in the annual 5K Walk to End Hunger at the Mall of America on Thanksgiving morning. This is the NHS team’s seventh year of participation.

The students have set a fundraising goal of $10,000 to help fight hunger in Minnesota, where one in five families struggles to put food on the table. Members of the club were interviewed by TV news crews and raised a total of $10,728 in donations, exceeding their goal.

Community painting The Lakes International Language Academy in Forest Lake invites members of the community to a presentation of the governor’s proclamation by state Rep. Bob Dettmer on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The event will recognize the school’s national best-practices award from Character.org for its inclusive thumbprint project.

The school welcomes community members to add their own thumbprint to the community painting to symbolize a contribution to the learning and growth of the students. Following the event, a school tour of the new Headwaters Campus, which currently serves grades 5-8 and will expand through grade 12 next year, will be offered.
