Veteran recalls Vietnam Experiences BY JULIE KINK CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Forest Lake veteran Ed Eigner is rightfully proud of his service in Vietnam. The experience changed him, instilling a disdain for what he calls the “trappings of American life.” And it gave him an appreciation for what’s really important, things that are hard-fought in many countries in the world.
“I learned how little a person needs — food to eat, a place to sleep, and a place to be safe. There are so many things we as Americans take for granted,” he remarked. The son of German immigrants, Eigner grew in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. He was married and finishing college when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1970. He served in Vietnam for 11 months, completed his obligation stateside and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Mil-
waukee, embarking on a career in management. Eigner was elected to the Forest Lake City Council in 2014. Nearly 650,000 Americans who served in Vietnam were draftees, according to Wikipedia. The 2.7 million Americans who served in that war represent 9.7 percent of their generation. General William C. Westmoreland has said that 91 percent of Vietnam veterans are glad they served. Eigner is one of them. “I never considered myself an
Army guy,” he said. “I didn’t want to make a career of the military but I’m proud of the fact that I served and I did my duty.” Eigner trained at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and attended advanced training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the “home of artillery.” There, he received orders to go to Vietnam with the military occupational specialty (MOS) 13E20 — cannon fire direction specialist.
