Licensing information for potential child foster care providers An informational meeting for those interested in foster care in Washington County will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, through a Webex presentation. For those who decide to become licensed to provide foster care, the licensing process begins at no cost to them. Several foster care options offered include: • For children needing a temporary place to live; placements vary in length. • For teenagers. • Respite program, giving a family a needed break by caring for children and teenagers with or without disabilities for a few days or a weekend. In addition to meeting state licensing requirements, foster families should be able to provide a stable family atmosphere in adequate housing, and love and support for the children or adults in their care. Before families can be licensed, they must undergo a thorough screening process, which includes an extensive background check. For additional information, questions, or to register, call 651-430-8307 or email ComSvsCFCLicensing@co.washington.mn.us. Also, see the Washington County website at www.co.washington.mn.us and search “foster care licensing.”
St. Croix Valley Orchestra recruits musicians For over 30 years, the St. Croix Valley Orchestra (SCVO) has pursued its dual goals — to entertain and educate. Following an 18-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCVO is ready to begin anew. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin on Sept. 13. SCVO is reaching out to the community in search of new members to add to its core membership. It is actively recruiting new musicians, especially those who play the following instruments — violin, viola, cello, string bass, bassoon, oboe, French horn, trombone and percussion. If you have experience playing any of these instruments, come to rehearsal at the St. Croix Falls Middle School/High School band room at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13. If you play an instrument other than those listed, come anyway, and SCVO will see if it can fit you in. Requirements on your musical ability are: • Past experience at the high school band or orchestra level or greater • Commitment to attend weekly rehearsals • Commitment to practice at least two hours per week in addition to the scheduled rehearsals • Confidence in your ability to play (after about a month of practice) the musical pieces posted on the SCVO website at scvorchestra.org. If you are interested or have questions, send an email to SCVO Musical Director Adam Bever at: beveradam@gmail.com.
Exhibit at Stillwater Public Library An exhibit at the Stillwater Public Library features "Water, White Pines and Wildflowers" by photographer Sarah Lilja. The photos are from from Lilja's recent three-week residency at Pine Needles, the historic James Taylor Dunn Cabin, on the banks of the St. Croix River. This competitive residency program, sponsored by the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, focuses on the complex connection between art, the natural world and the sciences. Lilja’s work captures the new spring growth as it unfurled from the cold, leaf-littered ground following a long Minnesota winter. The exhibit runs through Sept. 30 and is viewable during library hours. View hours at stillwaterlibrary.org. Meet the artist at a reception in the gallery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Thank you, Sen. Housley The 2021 session was long and contentious, but important for Minnesota’s economic recovery. We want to acknowledge Sen. Housley’s good work to help Minnesota employers and employees get back to business and for fighting against vast tax increases and new mandates on business that would have made Minnesota an even tougher place for companies to succeed and grow. Sen. Housley: • Voted to make sure PPP loans weren’t taxed in Minnesota. The Senate took this vote in March before taxes were due. • Helped make sure workers wouldn’t have to pay income tax on unemployment benefits received during the pandemic. • Voted to extend health care reinsurance for individuals, keeping premiums reasonable. • Voted against legislation that would have made Minnesota one of highest tax states in the country — despite a state budget surplus and availability of billions of federal dollars. We appreciate Sen. Housley’s support for main street businesses in this community and for helping to make sure our state bounces back from the economic challenges the past year has thrown our way. COUNTY BRIEFS County will receive state money to provide services to those without homes Washington County will receive $120,000 annually for the next three years from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to provide services to those who are without permanent homes. The county had a grant for $240,000 through the Department of Human Services for the Project for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) that ran through the end of June. The money is used to fund outreach and case management for individuals experiencing homelessness and diagnosed with a mental illness or substance use disorder. Outreach is conducted by social workers on the HOST (Homeless Outreach Services Team) team, who engage with individuals through the county’s housing walk-in hours, as well as through contact with residents at highway rest areas, drop-in centers, libraries and parks. Once engaged with households, HOST staff can provide ongoing case management and assist individuals in accessing housing and other services needed.
County board appoints deputy registrar The Washington County Board of Commissioners has appointed Neng Lor as the Washington County Driver’s License Agent
and the Washington County Deputy Registrar. Lor will oversee the offices in Forest Lake, Stillwater and Woodbury. Lor serves as the division manager of the county’s license and service centers.
County’s 2022 recommended budget continues pandemic response and recovery The county board has received the county administrator’s recommendation for the county’s 2022 budget. Last year, in response to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on residents and businesses, the board approved a 0% increase in the county’s 2021 tax levy. With the ongoing response to and recovery from the pandemic, the recommended 2022 budget includes a levy increase that funds increased costs to the county expected in 2022, and those that occurred in 2021. Commissioners will conduct workshops on the recommended 2022 budget throughout August, and all are open to the public and webstreamed on the county’s website. The workshops provide the opportunity for each department to present its recommended budget to the board. After reviewing the recommended budgets, the board will set a proposed levy and adopt a proposed budget for 2022 Sept. 14; after the proposed levy is set, it may be reduced but not raised in the final budget, which will be

approved Dec. 14. An evening public budget meeting will occur at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, in the Board Room of the Government Center in Stillwater. The recommendation that the board is reviewing includes a 5.78% increase in the county’s levy, which would result in an increase for the county’s portion of the annual property tax of $29 for the average-valued home in the county, which is $318,700. That same average-valued home in 2021 experienced a $25 reduction in county tax when the board approved a 0% levy increase. New funding in the budget will pay for salaries and benefit increases for existing employees, as the county expects a rather substantial health insurance increase in the coming year, and base salaries of all county employees were held flat in 2021. The recommended budget includes only a small number of new employees and few changes in the services or programs delivered. The recommended budget includes investments in the county’s technology infrastructure to maintain and enhance data and network security. The budget funds a fairly substantial increase in election costs for 2022 as more people vote absentee, which adds to the cost of managing an election. The budget also funds replacements in the public works fleet to ensure the ability to maintain and provide snow removal on county roads.

hose of us who live within a few miles of the border are well aware of the interstate rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin. I personally think that we have more in common with each other than differences, but have to admit that I’m not thrilled (and have to suppress some territorial impulses) when I see the overt display of Green Bay Packer colors during football season. Angle of This mostly friendly, but View occasionally heated, rivalry Paul Dols is explored in detail by a couple of former Press Publications employees via an online audio podcast titled “Minnesconsin/Wiscosota.” The curiosity and extensive experience of journalists Mark Nicklawske and Keith Uhlig is evident as they playfully debate and explore a variety of topics including, but not limited to, cheese (of course), bratwurst, the best regional candy, road trips, both urban and rural bicycling, the magic (and danger) of thunderstorms and state parks. Mark was a regional editor during his time at the Press and currently lives in Duluth. Keith was the editor of the St. Croix Valley Press (now the Lowdown) and lives in Wausau, Wisconsin. I suspect that I might be
T
somewhat biased about the podcast because I enjoyed working with both Mark and Keith and have also occasionally accompanied them on their outings. Last summer Mark rode his bike out to Stillwater and we rolled downtown and then pedaled along the loop trail that circles across the St. Croix Crossing bridge into Wisconsin, back across the Historic Lift Bridge and then up the Brown’s Creek Trail, which connects to the Gateway Trail. Last week friends from Minneapolis pedaled out for a visit and we completed the same loop. One of them commented that the Brown’s Creek segment, with its sun dappled semi-shaded light, was arguably one of the most pleasant trail segments in the region. I was present during one of the stories Mark and Keith recounted in their Magic of Thunderstorms podcast segment. It was during an early summer kayaking trip up on Lake Kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park. We had successfully paddled across the lake and were setting up our campsite on the northern shore when one of the loudest sounds I’ve ever heard in my life shocked us into attention. Lightning had struck a mature pine tree on a rocky point near our campsite, followed by rain. Even though it was raining, the tree burned from the inside for hours before it eventually cracked and fell into the water. I realize memory is fickle, but one of the details I still recall
from this incident was the look of grave concern on the face of the experienced guide and outfitter who shuttled out provisions and firewood for us just before the thunderstorm hit. After looking up and seeing what was developing in the sky, he hurriedly dropped off our stuff and then gunned his powerboat back out across the big lake. One of the only other times I’ve seen a similar expression was on the face of the captain of a fishing boat on Lake Superior right before he instructed us to pull in our lines before speeding back to the harbor ahead of a quickly developing storm. The lesson I’ve gleaned from these experiences and a host of other misadventures, is to never underestimate and always respect the power of nature. Mark and Keith both have international travel experiences, so I believe that their podcast is not based on a strictly provincial pointof-view. Instead, it calls attention and elaborates on some of the world-class attractions, amenities, quirks and history that contribute to the unique character and quality of life in this part of the country. Find Minnesconsin/Wiscosota wherever you get your podcasts or find a link at presspubs.com. Paul Dols is photojournalist/website editor for Press Publications. He can be reached at 651-407-1238 or photos@presspubs.com.
Where I was that September day
t seems like yesterday when I woke up, made some coffee and got my oldest son off to school. My younger children were not in school yet and I thought it was strange that they were still sleeping. I took advantage of my “alone time” and turned on “The Today Show.” and saw an image of the World Trade Center on fi re and Katie Couric and Matt Lauer were reporting it was believed a plane had crashed into one of the towers. I got a sick feeling in my stomach and said to myself, “this doesn’t look good.” As I was watching, I clearly saw a plane hit the other tower and thought “what are the odds of that happening?” Then reality started sinking in that this could be a possible terrorist attack. I immediately tried calling my Noelle’s husband, who was a pilot and flying that morning. I couldn’t Notes remember where he was flying to because he was in the middle Noelle Olson of a four-day trip. There was no answer on his phone, so I left a message. Not long after, another plane had crashed into a Pennsylvania field. I was thinking — “What the heck is going on here? Is this a terrorist attack? Why are they flying planes into buildings? Are my kids safe? Where’s my husband? Was he one of the pilots one any of those planes?” Many things were going through my mind and honestly, I was scared. Later, I realized that was fear of the unknown and I knew things would never be the same. I called my sister who lived about three hours away in Pennsylvania (we lived in Ohio then) and we made sure our families were safe. My husband fi nally called me and said he was in Cleveland and was heading to his plane headed to Nashville. I asked him if he knew what was going on? He didn’t have a clue. I told him and he said he’d call me back as soon as he could. My younger kids fi nally woke up and I gave them breakfast. They were 1 and 3 at the time, so they didn’t understand what was going on. I put on Barney and called my mom and dad and other family members to make sure they were safe. I put the kids in the double stroller and we walked to my oldest son’s elementary school. Teachers were out directing the kids and parents were walking around with bewildered looks on their faces (I’m sure I was one of them). My husband called me and said all flights were canceled and he was coming home but they weren’t letting anyone leave airport so he was stranded there all day. When he fi nally got home hours later, I felt a sense of relief and security that my family was together. My heart went out to those who died that September day and to their families. People just went off to work and never came home. Heroic fi refi ghters went into the Twin Towers and never came out. It was a sad and tragic day for our country; but somehow brought us together. For a brief moment in time, our petty differences didn’t seem to matter and we were the United States of America.

The making of a winemaker BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER
AFTON — After his dreams of going into the Air Force were crushed by a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) accident when he was 17 years old, Cody Kaye didn't know what to do with the rest of his life. “I was a passenger in a serious rollover in an UTV, and I almost died,” Kaye said. “Children's Hospital said it was the worst concussion they'd ever seen. I missed my senior year of sports and it was devastating for me. I was on bed rest for over five months and I started thinking that I haven't accomplished anything in my life.” Kaye, of Afton, grew up in a big yellow house and his love for that home prompted him to start a business in 2014. He planted a vineyard on his parents’ land and called it Yellow House Vineyard, in honor of the home he grew up in. Nestled away in its own microclimate between a tree farm and one of Afton's three Bissell’s Mounds, which are made of limestone, the vineyard sits on a little over 2 acres. Kaye planted two varieties of grapevines — Frontenac blanc and Marquette. “The Marquette grape is hard to grow, and my vineyard's topsoil is eroded limestone left over from the ice age, which is the the most desirable,” Kaye said. Kaye learned a lot about

how to grow the Marquette grape from Afton resident Larry Headrick. “He has a Marquette vineyard and has been producing Marquette grapes for about 12 years. He is a mentor to me, and he knows what he is doing,” Kaye said. After graduating from St. Thomas Academy following his accident, Kaye attended the University of Minnesota
and took viticulture classes (the process of growing grapes) and majored in applied economics. Currently, he is taking fi nance classes to learn the business side of things. Now 26 years old, Kaye aspires to be the winemaker and vineyard manager as well as the owner of Yellow House Vineyard. “I wanted to build a building to pro-
duce the wine, but lumber prices went sky high, and I also want to purchase more land to build my business.” he said. Kaye said when COVID-19 hit, he couldn't fi nd people to pick the grapes, so he hired a commercial harvester, Jamieson Lindquist of Grand Cordon LLC. “It took us only six hours to harvest the grapes compared to about
500 hours if we would have hand-picked them,” he said. The drought this summer hasn't affected Yellow House Vineyard — Kaye had already installed a 100% drip irrigation system in his vineyard. “When I started it, people laughed at me,” Kaye said. “In terms of how it runs and operates, it acts like a sprinkler in your yard and it runs off a garden hose, so I don't have to worry about the grapes not getting enough water.” Kaye learned quickly that making wine is not just following a recipe, but done through trial and error. “I made so many mistakes in the beginning, but I didn't know what I was doing. I'm learning along the way that patience is the key. Otherwise, I would have been done four years ago,” he laughed. Kaye said he's gotten compliments on his wine and has many recipes in mind for the future. Eventually, he'd like to host on-site events at his secluded vineyard. He’s anxious to start selling his wine, but has hit a few road bumps along the way. “It's just taking a little long to get approval from the city. They don't want anything too crazy of a change,” he said. “I'm so passionate about this, and I don't consider this a job at all — and my ultimate goal is have the the fi rst winery in Afton.” Staff Writer Noelle Olson can be reached at 651-407-1229 or lowdownnews@presspubs.com.
St. Croix Vineyards Q: What made you decide to go into the grape growing/winery business? A: We started Saint Croix Vineyards because of a deep commitment to the fascinating world of grapes and wine.

Rustic Roots Winery
Q: What made you decide to go into the grape-growing/winery business? A: My husband, Greg, and his family have lived in Scandia for three generations, so we have a deep connection with the area. We also have a history of growing through our work at Abrahamson Nurseries. We wanted to find a way to create a destination within Scandia to bring more people to our area through agritourism. By doing a lot of research, learning from other established wineries around Minnesota and Wisconsin and getting some assistance from the team at the University of Minnesota, we grew more confident that we could turn our dream into a reality.
Q: When did you open to the public? A: We opened for business last Labor Day weekend, on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, so we’re approaching our one-year anniversary.
Q: What types of grapes do you grow? A: Right now, we’re growing approximately 15 acres (11,000 vines) of cold-hardy grapes with plans to plant an additional 8 acres next spring. The varieties we currently have planted include — Marquette, Itasca, Frontenac blanc, Frontenac, Frontenac gris, La Crescent, Brianna and petite pearl. We planted our vines in May 2020 and should have some fruit to harvest by the end of next season.
Q: Do you get grapes from other vineyards? A: While we’re waiting for our vines to mature, we are buying grapes in from other Minnesota vineyards
the vineyard. In September, we’ll be hosting a 5K run/walk through the vineyards. We try to organize events that appeal to different audiences so there’s something for everyone to come out and enjoy. In addition to our scheduled events, we also have hiking trails on the property that we invite our guests to explore. They are open year-round, and can be hiked whenever we are open for business.

across the state. Beyond that, we also do get some grapes from Washington State and New York.
Q: Do you offer anything else besides wine? A: In addition to our wines, we do make a hard cider with apples from Pine Tree Apple Orchard in White Bear Lake.
Q: What’s your most popular wine? A: Our most popular white wine is our La Crescent, and our most popular red is our Roots Red. Both have been clear leaders since the day we opened, and continue to be the most popular with our guests.
Q: Have you won any awards? If so, for which wine(s)? A: Since opening last fall, we have entered two international wine competitions and are happy to have earned awards at each. We won three awards
from the 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Our riesling won a double gold, La Crescent a gold and our Marquette won a silver. In the 2020 Finger Lakes International Wine & Spirits Competition, we won five awards. Our La Crescent was awarded a gold; our riesling, Roots Red and Roots Rosé were all awarded silver, and our Marquette was awarded a bronze.
Q: Do you have any special events at your winery? A: We have live music every Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., which has been very popular with our guests. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Additionally, we have a Farmers & Artisans market on the third Thursday of every month from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. We have also had comedy nights, charcuterie-building classes, paint and sip classes and yoga in
A: Our goal with the winery was to create a place where we would want to hang out, and we hope our guests feel the same way. We wanted to create a casual and comfortable environment for the wine experts and novices. We have amazing views of the valley and invite our guests to explore our grounds — whether it’s walking through the vineyard, the hiking trails or just relaxing on one of our patios. When you’re here, we hope you’re able to unwind and escape the rush of everyday life.

Winehaven Winery A: My family was one of the largest beekeepers in Minnesota throughout the 1970s and ’80s. Winehaven was founded in 1995 as a way to create a valueadded product for our prized honey.
Q: When did you open to the public? A: In 1995. Winehaven is one of the oldest wineries in Minnesota.
Q: What types of grapes do you grow? A: Winehaven offers an extremely unique selection of wines from grapes that were developed at Winehaven and recognized by the U.S. Patent Office for their unique combination of winter hardiness, vigor, disease resistance and wine quality. Here's a list of these very special grapevines: Chisago grapevine, Nokomis grapevine, Nicollet grapevine, and Franconia grapevine.
Q: Do you get grapes from other vineyards? A: We get some grapes from a small number of local growers. However, more than 90% of the grapes used in Winehaven wines are grown in Winehaven’s estate vineyard in Chisago City.
Q: Tell me about your honey wine.
A: Winehaven’s popular honey wine (also known as mead) originated from the Peterson family reading stories about Queen Elizabeth and her royal recipe for mead. Since we always had access to the very best honey, we would try to replicate the mead using modern winemaking techniques. Our mead is one-of-akind, because our bees make it. As such, we are able to select only the best honey from the most desirable flower sources. Winehaven’s “Stinger Mead” has won more than 30 medals in international competitions, including its sixth gold medal in California this spring.
Q: What’s your most popular wine? A: The Stinger Mead.
Q: Have you won any awards? If so, for which wine(s)? A: Winehaven is one of the most award-winning wineries in the upper Midwest. Winehaven has won more than 200 medals at international wine competitions over the past 10 years.
Q: What are some special events at your winery? A: We have two special events coming up. The fi rst is the Federweisser Festival at Winehaven from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24. The grape harvest

is now over, and the new wines are quietly maturing in our stainless steel tanks. During this special weekend, Winehaven will be embracing the German tradition of allowing guests to sample the new wine — directly from the cask. It's not juice anymore, but it's not fi nished wine either. Whatever it is, it's delicious! The second event is our 23rd annual Cheese and Chocolate weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21. Guests experience our unique wines paired with local cheeses and artisanal chocolates. While at the winery, don’t forget to pick up your Thanksgiving wines, including the new cranberry wine and our fi rst-ever frontenac gris.
Q: What makes your winery/vineyard unique? A: Winehaven’s vineyards are located on sloping hillsides located between three lakes — Lake Ellen, Green Lake and Lake Martha. The lakes, combined with the area's gentle southerly sloping hillside, provide natural protection for the most delicate grapevine varieties. As a result, the fruit is able to ripen later in the season and the vines are protected from the north winds during winter storms.

The Rivertown Fall Art Festival returns to the Lowell Park riverfront in Stillwater on Saturday, Oct. 2, and Sunday, Oct. 3. “The festival has been going on for many years and is a well-known arts festival in the area,” said Stacie Jensen, communications manager for the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce. “It has always been held the first weekend in October, with the exception of last year due to the pandemic.” In the past, the festival has attracted more than 10,000 people from Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. This year, the festival will feature over 150 artisans showcasing specialty handcrafted items, which include artist mediums of all kinds — ceramics, clay, culinary arts, drawing, fiber work, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, pottery, wood and an “others” category. New to the festival this year is culinary arts. “We added the culinary arts category because we had a few requests over the past few years from people who make different foods or drink mixes; and they had good luck at other art festivals selling their products,” Jensen said. Returning to the festival is the beer and wine tent, live music overlooking the beautiful St. Croix River, and a variety of food selections. “We typically have
three or four food trucks and beer and wine from local wineries and breweries,” Jensen said. The arts festival, which runs from from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, is free to attend. Jensen noted that some local Stillwater businesses plan to offer art and food and drink specials throughout the weekend. “It's nice that we can be outside and people can walk around and check out the local businesses,” she added. The Greater Stillwater Chamber produces the Rivertown Fall Arts Festival and relies on sponsors for the event. “Our gold sponsor is Kickled Mary. They started out making pickles with a kick and then evolved into making Bloody Mary mix. They will be at our beer tent at the festival and were also at the food truck extravaganza this summer, and they were very popular,” Jensen said. “We really do appreciate all of our sponsors.” Jensen explained that the chamber values the safety and success of all artists who participate in the festival and is considering multiple scenarios to maximize both safety and success for everyone attending the festival, as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) COVID-19 guidelines continue to evolve. Belwin celebrates 50 years BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER
Within the St. Croix Valley lies 1,500 acres of prairies, savannas and woodlands. The Belwin Conservancy in Afton has encompassed these different topographies and diverse landscapes since 1971, 50 years ago. It will celebrate this anniversary at an open house celebration from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9. “All of our sites will be open, and we're going to have festivities such as storytelling, poetry readings, art and ecological activities for kids and families,” Program Director Sarah Haugh said. “Also, we will have live music throughout Belwin — out in the prairies and the forest.” Haugh said there will be guided hikes for all ages and abilities and a celebratory gathering at 2:30 p.m. at Belwin’s Education Center. “It's the original site built by Belwin in 1971, which was the beginning of Belwin.” Haugh also noted that visitors should dress for the weather, bring lawn chairs or blankets, and their own food and non-alcoholic drinks. Also, no dogs and bicycles are allowed on the trails. Parking is free. Belwin Conservancy is located at 1553 Stagecoach Trail South in Afton. For more information and updates, go to belwin.org/event/50th-open-house/.
A brief history of the Belwin Conservancy Charles H. Bell and Lucy Winton Bell purchased the property in Afton in 1958 as a family weekend retreat. Charles was the president and chairman at General Mills, which was founded by his father, James Ford Bell, in 1928. According to the Belwin Conservancy archives, conservation was always important to Lucy and Charlie. Over the years, they acquired several more parcels of land. By the late 1960s, they had accumulated far more property than they felt was needed for their weekend retreat. That’s when Lucy suggested they find a way to put the land to good public use. At that time, there was a growing awareness of diminishing wild spaces, water pollution and the lack of outdoor education for children. The Bells found themselves in a unique position to address these challenges and began to discuss options with local thought leaders for use of their property. In July 1970, Lucy and Charlie were introduced to Rodd Frye, the educator charged with finding land in the St. Croix Valley for an outdoor educational laboratory for the Saint Paul Public School district (SPPS). That October, SPPS and the Bells signed an agreement — the Bells would

donate 225 acres to a new nonprofit they would create, Belwin (a combination of their names, Bell and Winton), where SPPS could run their program free of charge. Belwin also built the necessary facilities for the program. According to the Belwin archives, when the couple met with Frye in the summer of 1970, he was taken with the property, noting that it provided insights into “a love affair with nature.” From that meeting a new partnership was born — Belwin Outdoor Education Laboratory, today referred to as Belwin Outdoor Science (BOS). When the first students arrived in November 1971, the program was an idea ahead of its time. As the outdoor science program became more successful, it grew to include students from other area schools, including Afton-Lakeland Elementary and Bayport Elementary (now Andersen Elementary). Since 1971, 600,000 children have participated in the Belwin Outdoor Science program. The couple’s daughter, Lucy Hartwell, was quoted as saying, “It’s so important for kids to experience the land and the quiet and the beauty of nature. Many of them never have had an opportunity to really reflect on that.” Staff Writer Noelle Olson can be reached at 651-407-1229 or lowdownnews@presspubs.com.

Rising senior wins gold medal in Physics Olympiad BY NOELLE OLSON STAFF WRITER
Rising senior Evan Erickson has made history. He competed in the 2021 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) this summer as a member of the U.S. Physics team and, for the first time in history, all five team members achieved gold medals. The team came in third overall, behind China and South Korea. “It was a huge opportunity, and I was excited to be able to do it. I was super elated when I got the news to represent the U.S.,” Evan said. “It was very exciting to win a gold medal.” According to Erickson, of Lake Elmo, more than 400 students from 76 countries participated. During the Olympiad, held virtually in Lithuania this year, young physicists from all over the world solved theoretical and experimental tasks created by Lithuanian scientists. Gold medals were awarded to the top 8% of participants. Math comes easy to Erickson. When he was in middle school and early high school, he was
in the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics program, a five-year program covering high school math and college calculus. Currently, Erickson is taking postsecondary enrollment options (PSEO) classes at the University of Minnesota. He was homeschooled by his mom, Rena Erickson, during his younger years. “The biggest challenge in homeschooling Evan was finding challenging work for him to do, and giving him the opportunity to fail so he could learn how to come back from failure,” his mother said. “I think a lot of the kids at his level are not used to failing, and they don’t know how to deal with it.” Erickson works at the Cup & Cone in White Bear Lake. In his free time, he likes reading and programming. “I like learning in general, and reading texts and informational books,” he said. Evan wants to be physicist someday, and is not sure which field of study he wants to pursue right now. “Aerospace seems interesting,” he noted. The Minnesota State High School League

Virtual tour of history STILLWATER — Lens Flare Stillwater, a nonprofit project originally funded by the Stillwater Area Community Foundation, announces its newest and free local and interurban Stillwater streetcar APPS to visitors, students, tourists and residents. The project objective provided a web-based APP for mobile devices that enables anyone to carry the history of Stillwater in their pocket while traveling through a geo-location time tunnel. New historical locations, stories, and news flashes from 1899 during the construction of the streetcar line are featured. Safely take a virtual reality tour of Stillwater in your favorite armchair by going to any of these free apps and use the new 2021 mapping function. But, the best way to experience the History of the Streetcar Lines is in person, on site. Exercise while keeping a safe distance from others at these locations as you learn about what was once here. Get the free apps by going to the bottom of the home page of the LensFlareStillwater.org website. Experience the streetcar lines with more than twenty locations and stories that go from Bayport to Wildwood Amusement Park. Arrival and departures are announced with authentic streetcar sounds that once were common in and around Stillwater.
