‘Through the Eyes of Others’: Historic Courthouse solicits art submissions BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER
How can we see what others see? What is it like to walk around in someone else’s shoes? That’s what the latest art exhibit at the Stillwater Historic Courthouse aims to answer. “Through the Eyes of Others” is calling for submissions from Washington County artists between now and May 1. Artists can enter for a small fee of $10. All proceeds go toward the Historic Courthouse restoration fund. The selection process will be between May 2 and May 15, and artists will know whether their pieces will be included by May 16. Monetary prizes for jurors, supporters, best in show and best under 18 will be awarded to selected artists. The exhibition will be juried and curated by Stillwater’s Dr. Megan Arney Johnson, whose personal philosophy is that of “slow looking,” a pedagogy that encourages us to look and then look again at art. “We know that if we can get people to look a little longer than just 30 seconds on each work, then they have a much deeper and impactful experience,” said Arney Johnson. Arney Johnson wants the courthouse’s exhibit to get folks to look and then look again at Washington County, explaining that

the residents of the county see parts of their home that not every tourist might see. “We’re not just about the quaint little downtown, but also about amazing parks and amazing buildings and history. Hopefully, we’re encouraging people to look at more than just a surface level,” said Arney Johnson.
Given the social upheaval and the effects of COVID-19, the exhibit’s theme has proven to be as timely as she had hoped. “And I think that there is kind of an urgent need to consider this approach. So let’s look through the eyes of others. How can we empathize?” said Arney Johnson.
While the exhibition calls for categories like people, architecture, parks, nature and historic sites, Arney Johnson aims to choose pieces that best tell Washington County’s story. Artists of any medium are welcome to submit. Arney Johnson has a particular interest in contemporary art, so mediums like video and contemporary craft are encouraged. The exhibition will also focus on its under-18 category, which was created to support young artists in the county and encourage them to submit their work. Arney Johnson hopes to receive upwards of 50 to 100 submissions and is already dreaming up a salon-style floor-to-ceiling wall hanging. The selected artwork will be on display from June 1 through Jan. 8, 2023. A sneak peek with artists, VIPs and major supporter Art Reach will be held June 2. Until then, Arney Johnson encourages the artists of Washington County to begin submitting their works so they can be part of a unique show at the Historic Courthouse, where visitors can look and look again at the work of local artists. Manning Avenue update: Highway 36 closures expected throughout April BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER
Improvements continue on the Highway 36 and Manning Avenue interchange now that road construction season has begun. The estimated $32 million project began in the spring of 2021 to address increased traffic on Highway 36 and at the Manning Avenue intersection. A traffic study performed in 2017 and 2018 found that traffic is expected to increase at the intersection over the next 20 years. The project aims to improve safety by replacing the at-grade intersection with an interchange and removing a series of stoplights. “There’s a safety component to removing the stoplights. You know people view stoplights as a safety feature, but they also have their own safety issues with them,” said Washington County Construction Engineer Gerritt Bangma. After the St. Croix Crossing bridge opened, Highway 36 now operates more like an expressway, which isn’t conducive to the backups generated at a signalized intersection. To solve this issue, the project has focused on building an interchange with ramps and an overpass to help maintain the flow of traffic on Highway 36. Last year, the bridge abutments and the bridge’s center pier were completed and the bridge beams were

placed before Christmas. The project’s next major milestone will be placing the bridge deck itself, which will necessitate some temporary closures on Highway 36 this April. A pipe will be installed to convey the stormwater collected in the ponds near the interchange. That pipe will be connected to a water reuse structure. Collected stormwater will be used to water the Applewood Hills golf course, located on the northwest corner of the interchange. The stormwater reuse portion of the project will be undertaken through
a partnership between Washington County, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Browns Creek Watershed District. That installation will likely require a two-week road closure this April as well. “For the closures, we’ll do an advanced notice with signs out, and we’ll do all the social media. We're definitely big into outreach and making sure that people are expecting that there will be detour routes posted,” said Bangma. The engineer reports that the project is on schedule and is expected
to be complete by September 2022. “It’s a great project, and it’s good to be on time,” said Bangma. “The feedback we got last year was that people were impressed with the amount of work we did get done. And we're happy with it. It’s been a successful project and we’re looking forward to wrapping it up this year.” Staff Writer Corinne Stremmel can be reached by calling 651-407-1226 or emailing lowdownnews@presspubs.com.
ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
*Athletes chosen by Press staff
Aspen Blasko
Hunter Lyden
Forest Lake Wrestling
Stillwater Wrestling
Aspen Blasko, Forest Lake sophomore wrestler, was one of the champions in the first-ever MSHSL state girls tournament. Blasko pinned opponents from Owatonna and Fridley on March 5 at Xcel Energy Center to capture the 107-pound title. She had a 34-9 record, including 7-9 with three pins against boys varsity, 22-0 with 12 pins against boys JV’s, and 5-0 with four pins against girls at the section qualifier and state. “She puts in a ton of time, wrestling six or seven times a week, chasing her goals,” said coach Joe Kunshier. “She deserves all the accolades she receives.” This was actually Blasko’s third state title; her first two came in meets organized by coaches.
Hunter Lyden, Stillwater senior wrestler, capped a 53-0 season by capturing his third consecutive state championship on March 5. Lyden beat Farmington’s Cole Han-Lindemyer 11-3 in the 170-pound finals, after advancing with a pin and 10-0 and 12-3 decisions. Lyden, 68-0 the last two years (missing most of last season with a rib injury), has signed with Minnesota. “Hunter is a fearless competitor,” Gopher coach Brandon Eggum said. “We are excited that he has chosen to wrestle for us. He has an athletic style and is always looking to score points.”
Daniel VanAcker
Josie St. Martin
Forest Lake Wrestling
Stillwater Hockey
Daniel VanAcker, Forest Lake senior wrestler, was state Class 3A champion at 152 pounds — after placing third in the state cross-country meet in the fall. VanAcker capped a 45-4 season by pinning Anoka’s Jacob Witaker in 5:44 in the finals at Xcel Energy Center on March 5, his third pin in four matches at state. “He’s the kid who does everything right,” coach Joe Kunshier said. “He prepares correctly, he diets the right way and he works hard.” VanAcker will be a distance runner in college with the Minnesota Gophers.
Josie St. Martin, Stillwater hockey sophomore forward, is already a three-time all-conference pick with 63 career goals and 64 assists. St. Martin led the Ponies (14-11) in scoring with 28 goals (eight on power plays) and 19 assists. She had 20 goals and 26 assists as a freshman, and 15 and 19 in eighth grade. “Josie has worked extremely hard to get where she currently is,” coach Mira Jalosuo said. “What separates her from other players is her competitiveness. I think she hates losing more than she loves winning. That’s one of the reasons she was able to reach the 100-point milestone only as a sophomore.”

Earth Day
arth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Clear Lake WI. Much of the movement was sparked with the book “Silent Spring” published in 1962 by Rachel Carson. Earth Day has a different meaning to all of us considering in the 60s smog and air pollution was commonly accepted. Since its inception more than 50 years ago, Earth Day has become a movement. More than 190 countries and more than a billion people participate in Earth Day. Start your Earth Day planning for April 22. Consider planting a tree or removing an invasive one. Try out a more biodegradable soap or cleaning technique or take the next step with an organic compost pile. Consider upgrading your irrigation system to low flow heads or fixing that toilet or faucet leak. Ride a bike to work, carpool, or consider ways to increase your fuel mileage. As residents of Washington County, you live in an area surrounded by the best nature has to offer. In my time serving as publisher of local newspapers in the area, my family would often bump into Publisher’s former Vice President Walter Mondale and his family at the Scandia Café. Vice View President Walter Mondale left his legacy the St Croix River Valley when he Carter Johnson on signed on to sponsor Gaylord Nelson’s Wild and Scenic River bills that passed in 1968. We all have people like Gaylord Nelson and former Vice President Mondale to thank for their vision of the scenic St Croix River Valley. So this Earth Day, make a plan for your legacy, get out, volunteer and learn something new.

Spring clean up Thank you to the 100+ local volunteers and scouts who have once again managed the Annual Lake Cleanup event on and around White Bear Lake. Event coordinator Jim Schuster said that 176 lbs of trash was removed from the ice - including a bike, a lawnmower and a propane tank. This was the 19th annual event, which began as an Eagle Scout project. It is refreshing to see this level of community support around our natural assets, from lakes and rivers to parks, trails and roads. If you’re interested in helping with these types of events, check out one of the service clubs in the area such Rotary and Lions, or get involved with the Chamber of Commerce, park commission, churches and even schools. Many of these organizations have adopted a stretch of local road or highway to clean up, or host various opportunities to help our surroundings and the environment. With regard to an immediate way you can help keep our community clean, consider raking the salt and sand off your street, taking care to pick up the waste so it doesn’t flow into the stormwater systems and pollute our lakes and streams. Spring break With two years of limited travel due to Covid behind us, my wife and I tag-teamed spring break this year and split up. Our daughter, Abbey, is a high school senior and our son, Kellen, is a freshman. Where did the time go? She and my daughter headed to Mexico along with more than 30 of her classmates and their families, while my son and I visited my parents in Florida. The airports were busy and TSA was hustling us through security. My new mode of travel is to carry everything in a backpack carry-on to reduce the overall travel time and wait in baggage claim. We flew Sun Country down and Southwest back to get the best airfare. We heard about flight delays due to staff shortages and we in fact waited a few hours for our flight crew to arrive. All in all I was impressed with the crew and passengers. We have seen and heard the wild things taking place on airplanes, such as people refusing to follow policies and getting into fights. Maybe passengers are getting the drift that threats, violence and mischief won’t be tolerated and can result in them getting banned from the airline. To think even when I was a kid it was considered a pure luxury to fly and people dressed up. Today many people hardly dress at all. They wear flip flops or go bare foot or wear pajamas. We have enjoyed flying the low cost airlines when it makes sense, however, we have also had experiences where it pays to fly with the larger carriers who offer more flight options to get you to your destination when there are cancellations or delays. Direct flights are the best when you can do it. We’ve learned to always wear socks, and pack a few snacks, chewing gum and an empty water bottle to refill after going through security. A phone charger cord is a must and charging stations are now everywhere at the airports. We’ve found in-flight movies require either corded headphones or smartphone connected headphones and app. Remember to consider those around you when choosing a movie, as it can be embarrassing to watch something violent or racy. With spring break in full swing, remember to pack light, be patient, be thankful and have fun. Carter Johnson is publisher of Press Publications.

‘Devil May Care’ comes to Franconia
BRETT DOUGLAS HUNTER | CONTRIBUTED
Hunter plans on making new outdoor sculptures for the park. BY CORINNE STREMMEL STAFF WRITER
Brett Douglas Hunter doesn’t want you to take his art too seriously. His latest exhibition, tentatively titled “Devil May Care,” which comes to Franconia Sculpture Park April 23, has just the right amount of whimsy for the serious world. “It’s impulsive and weird,” laughs Hunter, describing his art. The Nashville artist is all about having fun and going with the creative flow while making his signature creaturelike sculptures. “I think we could all use a healthy dose of humor,” said Franconia Sculpture Park’s chief curator, Ginger Porcella. “I really appreciate humor and artwork. I think a lot of public art is sometimes way too serious.” Porcella, whose family is also from Nashville, first found Hunter’s work through a friend’s Instagram feed and thought his playful sculptures would be a colorful addition to the park and durable enough for Minnesota’s winters. Hunter, a self-taught artist, has a passion for the outsider art aesthetic. “It’s like the farmer who makes stuff when he gets old, or the person who doesn’t really fit in society but can’t help but make stuff,” said Hunter. Hunter grew up in a family of artists who shared a passion for folk art. Hunter remembers his mother buying garage sale chairs and repainting them and even making creatures of her own. His grandparents, who were collectors of folk art, influenced his decision to lean into his own understanding of folk art. Though he’s known for his primarycolored creatures, his exhibition at Franconia will take a bit of a turn.

The exhibition will feature a number of wall hangings indoors in the Mardag Gallery, and Hunter’s larger papercrete statues will remain outdoors at the park until 2024. “One of the outdoor sculptures is a ‘Truck Full of Grief,’ which doesn't sound very fun and playful like my other stuff, but it will still be kind of playful. But yeah, that’s what I’ve been rolling with is this theme of vehicles for this gallery,” said Hunter. Hunter’s creatures will still make an appearance indoors in the Mardag Gallery and as part of Franconia’s Open Studio Classes, where students of all ages can take a class and create their own creatures inspired by Hunter’s work. “We wanted to have the classes be an opportunity for people to come in and be creative and inspired by his work, and you know, have a good time,” said Porcella. Though Hunter won’t be a part of the Open Studio classes, he will, however, be at Franconia working on his sculptures through the month of April. “It feels great to be included in the park,” said Hunter. Though Franconia is currently home to some rather serious pieces of artwork, Procella wants visitors to feel like Hunter’s work is a way to help them process some of the more politically charged art. “I just think his work is so universal, and is going to appeal to people of all backgrounds and ages,” said Procella. With trucks, colorful creatures and Hunter’s endless creativity on the docket, visitors to Franconia will leave appreciating the power of good humor. Ronald,12, is friendly, playful and inquisitive. He enjoys telling jokes and listening to music- some of his favorite artists are Michael Jackson, Prince, and Queen. Ronald also enjoys playing basketball, Star Wars, magic, Legos, being outside, building things, dancing, and having fun at the playground. He likes taking things apart and trying to figure out how they work. Ronald enjoys school and is always excited to go to school in the mornings. His favorite colors are red and blue. Ronald wants to be a police officer when he grows up. A family who can provide consistency and unconditional support would be ideal for Ronald. He would benefit from being the youngest child in the home and having one stay-at-home parent. Following adoption, Ronald would need to maintain contact with his brother and other birth family members. Only Minnesota families are being considered at this time.

Bayport Library begins renovations
August 2022
PHOTOS BY BTR ARCHITECTURE | CONTRIBUTED
Construction on Bayport’s library begins this August. Renderings depict future renovations for the library. Constructions begins this August.
The Bayport Library is writing its next chapter. Back in 2015, the library started small with some new additions like tables and chairs. “It was sort of like that kids’ book, ‘If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,’” said Library Director Jill Smith. And if you give the Bayport library some new furniture, it’ll ask for some much-needed renovations. The library sent out a request for proposals in 2019 and had a kickoff meeting in February 2020. COVID-19 came along and put a hold on the renovations, but in the spring of 2021, the library received support from a few of the local foundations who helped renovate the library in 1989. A community mailing campaign from this summer raised about $18,000. Other funding came from individuals, businesses and city funds. So far, the library has raised $1.5 million for the project and has a capital campaign goal of $1.9 million.
The library will be working with local contractor Market & Johnson Inc. and architect Jonathan Strand of Bentz Thompson Rietow of Minneapolis. The official groundbreaking will take place in August 2022. “We’re still early in the design process, but we’re shooting to be wrapped up by roughly the end of the year,” said Project Manager Braxton Meyer. The building footprint won’t change much, and the exterior of the library isn’t expected to change beyond some minor maintenance. Smaller improvements will include repainting some spaces and adding new carpet. A quiet room will be added as a decompression space and nursing room for mothers and children. Restrooms will be brought up to date with ADA requirements. The roof will also get some freshening up since the building itself has been around since 1925. The most notable improvement will be to the library’s service desk. It will be located in the middle of the

space, and will separate the children’s area from the rest of the library. The plan is to open up the service desk so it’s more welcoming for library guests and easier for patrons to locate library staff members. The children’s section is getting an update, too, to give families and children more space to learn and play in the library. “If you’ve been here before, you know it’s kind of a labyrinth right now where all the shelves are, and it’s kind of hard to push a stroller through some of the little corners and areas through there,” said Smith. There will also be a space that will highlight some of Bayport’s history that will be a welcoming seating area as well. To accommodate those participating in online school and folks who work from home, the library will add some individual study rooms for a quiet spot to work and study in the library. “We’re going to keep the really cozy space patrons love at the front of the library by the fireplace. We’re going to keep things cozy and keep that
APRIL IS CAR CARE MONTH!
really traditional library feel,” said Smith. Though some new libraries have an all-white modern feel to them, this renovation will be a way to rearrange the already comfy, cozy spaces the library is known for. An open house is planned for the community from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, so patrons can check out new models and floor plans and partake in some fun kids’ activities, too. Smith hopes that by next year in April 2023, the library will hold a community celebration in the new space for National Library Week. While the building undergoes renovations, the library will close. Library services will continue to be provided at a temporary location that has yet to be announced. After seven years in the making, the library is ready to break ground this August and begin its new chapter. Lead and loons: A toxic relationship BY NOELLE OLSON SHOREVIEW PRESS EDITOR
Did you know that one lead sinker can kill a loon? One in five loons die a slow and painful death of lead poisoning from fishing tackle. And it's not just loons. Lead poisons eagles, trumpeter swans and some mammals as well. Kelly Amoth, program administrator for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPC), gave a Zoom presentation on the Get the Lead Out program at the Shoreview Environmental Quality Committee speaker series March 16. Get the Lead Out is an educational program to protect and restore the population of loons in Minnesota by reducing their exposure to lead-based fishing tackle. This outreach effort will run until 2023. Amoth said loons mostly eat fish, but will occasionally dine on frogs, toads or leeches. “If you're an angler, you know that fish aren't always on the top of the water,” Amoth said. “Fish can be deep, and loons have a great ability to dive. They are known as the great northern diver. They can dive up to 130 feet and can hold their breath
HOW TO KNOW IF YOUR TACKLE IS LEAD The packaging will have a lead warning on it. If you no longer have the packaging, here are tips that may help. • Most fishing tackle with any density to it contains lead. • Lead is a dense but soft metal that is easy to mold and shape. Using pliers is a good way to test this out. • Lead is gray and dull. It will leave a gray mark if you scratch it on paper. If there is paint, it will still be able to leave a gray mark after the paint layer is scratched. for up to five minutes.” Amoth said one way loons are exposed to lead is by feeding on fish that are being reeled in by an angler, or fish that have broken free with tackle still attached. Another way is that lead weights fall to the bottom of the lake and the loon ingests the lead along with the pebbles needed as grit to aid in digestion. “They will pick up small rocks, but they will also pick up lost fishing tackle,” Amoth said. “Any fishing tackle that was lost yesterday, or 60 years ago, is still there at the bottom of the lake. It's not going anywhere, and it becomes pollution.” Once lead tackle is ingested, it is broken down in the gizzard and passes into the bloodstream and organs. “The current nationwide estimate right now is about 25% of loon death is caused by lead poisoning,” Amoth said. “That's all human behavior.
LEAD-FREE ALTERNATIVES • Egg-sinker – tungsten • Jigs – bismuth/tin • Split shots – tin • Worm weights – tungsten • Metal composite • Glass So it's just changing our behaviors and our buying habits to make a switch to lead-free to prevent those deaths.” She noted there has not been a single case where a loon has recovered from lead poisoning. To decrease lead pollution to loons, Amoth said people can buy lead-free tackle, recycle lead tackle properly and share about the danger of lead to wildlife. Anglers can protected themselves from lead when fishing and hunting by washing their hands before eating and drinking.

An X-ray of a deceased loon shows that the bird ingested lead tackle.
The MPC is currently working with over 40 partners for lead collection, including lake associations, environmental nonprofits and county household hazardous waste facilities. Amoth said Shoreview has a fishing lead tackle drop-off box at Sucker Channel. “It's been doing pretty well,” she said. “We've collected over 2 pounds of lead, which is great, because that is lead that will not go into our lakes.” Zoom participant Nicki Bentley asked what steps are being taken currently to get lead-free tackle in more stores and bait shops in Minnesota.
Amoth said they are in the final stages of working on a retailer rebate program with bait shop owners and are hoping to get that program up and running by this year’s fishing opener. “The goal is protecting our loons and making sure that their population remains strong for many years to come,” Amoth said. For a list of manufacturers and retailers of lead-free tackle, go to https://bit. ly/3wcU51d. Staff Writer Noelle Olson can be reached by emailing shoreviewnews@presspubs.com or calling 651-407-1229.
