Disinformation: Accurate news critical on coronavirus
e’ve said it before and we’ll say it for as long as it takes: Get your news from credible news sources, especially for stories as serious as the coronavirus. The National Security Council warned Americans Monday about informaMovers & taking tion off social media regardShakers ing the coronaMankato virus as much of it is outright Free Press lies attempting to spread fear throughout the country. The NSC described it as “foreign disinformation” in a blatant attempt to spread fear and divisiveness. It came near the same time where a Department of Health and Human Services system experienced a “cyber incident.” The system was later running normally. The latest big lie involved a fake news report on social media, most likely created by Russia, that said the entire U.S.
was supposed to be on “lockdown” due to coronavirus. Nothing could be further from the truth. It was immediately debunked by health officials, security officials and President Donald Trump himself. A reminder: News that is transmitted by Facebook, Twitter, Google and other social platforms can be completely false. The tech giants have no legal liability or responsibility to make sure any of what they transmit is true. Facebook leaders have even gone so far as to reject the idea of taking down falsehoods because they are someone’s “version of the truth.” But it’s important not to confuse legitimate news sources like this newspaper or others in Minnesota who transmit their news via Facebook, Twitter and Google. It’s unfortunate the new ways of transmitting news can be confusing, but that’s a new reality. When you click on Facebook post that is a Free Press story, you will generally be brought to the news organization’s website. In some cases, The Free
Press posts an entire story on Facebook, but in that case it will have the author’s name. It may take a little more care to pick a legitimate website, but during a pandemic it can be critical to getting the correct information. Local, state and national coronavirus stories can be found at mankatofreepress.com. First responders and public health officials told MinnPost that one of the biggest challenges they face in trying to treat people and deliver care is the constant battle with disinformation on Facebook. People call in a panic wondering if the latest rumor about a case or the virus on Facebook is true. There has never been a more important time to get accurate information on a pandemic that hard-working public health officials are trying to respond to in a timely way. Don’t make it worse by spreading misinformation. This guest column was submitted by the Mankato Free Press.

OVID-19 has reached pandemic levels in the United States. It is time to live with caution and develop new and renew healthy practices at home, at work, in schools in medical centers and senior care facilities. People are frightened, herd buying is taking place at food stores, primarily About the for bottled water, toilet paper and canned goods. This is a new virus Town and it will take time to build immunities, develop vaccines and to Gene Johnson understand all its characteristics. The federal and state governments are gearing up to control the spread of this harmful respiratory disease. They are behind in testing equipment and facilities. Medical facilities are preparing to meet these challenges, thanks to the federal government fi nancial aid. Imposing international travel restrictions, closing educational facilities, churches, sporting and entertainment events which draw crowds will help control the spread. A great deal of health disciplines have been hitting my desk via email. Let me try to help readiness with this summary. The symptoms: 1. It will fi rst infect the throat, so you’ll have a sore throat lasting three or four days 2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about five or six days further. 3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing. 4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you’re drowning. It’s imperative you then seek immediate attention The Mayo Clinic has sent the following reminders: If you experience COVID-19 symptoms — fever, cough or shortness of breath — contact your regular provider before you arrive to determine if you should be seen. Wash your hands; avoid touching your face; and practice appropriate selfcare, including staying home when you are sick. Another source sent the following: 1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold. 2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose. 3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 C or 82-84 F degrees. It hates the sun. 4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne. 5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours — so if you come into contact with any metal surface, wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap. 6. On fabric, it can survive for 6-12 hours. Normal laundry detergent will kill it. 7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice. 8. Can’t emphasis enough — drink plenty of water! Use common sense: If you are sick, don’t go to work and contaminate your fellow workers. The federal government is making provisions to cover loss of wages while confi ned or quarantined to your home. We will overcome this new disease as we have done with the Spanish Flu, Polio, Measles, HIV, and other flu types. If you are considered elderly, or have a chronic illness, be concerned but do not panic over this new disease, which can affect senior living of all types. Be diligent in health practices. Extra hygiene is in order. Use prevention techniques such as cleaning the sinks, food preparation areas, bathrooms with disinfectant bleach. Wiping down all remotes, door handles with disinfectant, washing clothes with hot water, avoiding crowds and drinking plenty of fluids. Gene Johnson is publisher emeritus of Press Publications.

Craft breweries get creative TO STAY AFLOAT DURING COVID-19 BY ELIZABETH CALLEN EDITOR
Per Gov. Tim Walz’s orders, all bars and restaurants have stopped dine-in service to curb the spread of COVID-19. That hits doubly hard for that state’s craft breweries, which are losing out on sales both in their taprooms and bars/restaurants where their brews are served. However, breweries are getting creative as they try to mitigate the virus’s impact on their bottom lines. Stillwater’s Lift Bridge Brewery has adapted its taproom model for the time being, transitioning solely to-go orders for its beer, hard seltzers and soda. Merchandise and gift cards can also be purchased online. Maple Island Brewery, also located in Stillwater, remains open for growler sales but only through its online ordering system. It is only accepting payments through PayPal and Venmo to minimize employees having to physically handle credit cards and cash. Through the COVID-19 outbreak, Maple Island Brewery is also offering a special on Heggie’s pizzas along with growlers for customers looking for something to eat as well as to drink. The Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild has its own map of breweries throughout the state that are offering to-go brews in the wake of taprooms closing. The map is searchable by name and scrollable by location. It can be found at mncraftbrew.org. With so much unknown about the

current pandemic, it is likewise unclear how long breweries and other establishments will Walz’s original executive order closed dine-in service through March 27. As of press time, that date had not been officially extended. That leaves a lot of uncertainty for breweries and their employees, many of whom rely on tips. Continued business
from loyal customers, many of them say, is all the more crucial. “We have always tried to support the community as much as possible through our taproom and awesome employees,” Lift Bridge said on its website. “Now, we are asking for your support as we try to make it through this devastating time for our industry.”

Swans and loons will benefit from Get the Lead Out program BY JACKIE BUSSJAEGER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
As a photographer, Vadnais Heights resident Debbie Hartmann appreciates the beauty and grace of the trumpeter swans that flock together on Minnesota’s few open waters during the winters. Her favorite spot is Sucker Lake, where she can usually find a large flock hanging together, especially on the coldest winter days. Although Hartmann’s photography captures the elegance of these large waterfowl, there’s a dark side to her visits here. “One of the things that gets me outside, as of last winter, is I go there to see if there’s any dead ones,” Hartmann said. “When I found the first one, that’s kind of what started all this last year.” The dead swan was one of 11 that turned up on Vadnais Heights area lakes last winter. Necropsy results from the University of Minnesota confirmed it: the four birds that were tested died of lead poisoning from ingesting fishing tackle. This February, at least one more bird was found dead, and its body tested positive for lead. Since these gruesome discoveries, Hartmann said she continues her regular patrol to check on the swans. She communicates back and forth with the Vadnais Lake Area Water Management Organization (VLAWMO) about the swans’ condition and has offered her photography to be used for education and outreach. This is how the matter came to the attention of local Girl Scout Troop 56087. These White Bear Lake-area eighth graders had already completed their Bronze Award and were looking for a worthy cause to champion for their Silver Award. “They like to visit Sucker Channel and spend time watching the swans, so they wanted to know what they could do,” said VLAWMO Program Development Coordinator Dawn Tanner. “They wanted to get lead sinkers banned—that’s wonderful, and also a big goal,” Tanner said. Last November, the Minnesota DNR rejected a proposal to ban use of lead tackle (it’s found in most fishing jigs and sinkers) and ammunition across the state. (The use of lead shot for waterfowl hunting has been illegal in Minnesota since 1987.) Instead, Tanner pointed them toward other ways they could help: connecting with local fishing groups, writing letters to the editor and spreading the message about lead toxicity. The girls assisted Tanner in a presentation at a
water resources conference. On Feb. 18, they spoke before the Minnesota Senate’s Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Finance. During the meeting, the committee discussed the Damage Assessment and Restoration grant the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency received from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement. The MPCA pointed out that wildlife recovering from the ill effects of the 2010 oil spill, especially loons, were adversely impacted by the presence of impaired habitat in Minnesota, where the birds breed and nest. As part of the settlement for the environmental damages, funding was set aside to protect migratory birds. The MPCA requested that the $1.27 million in funding be directed to its Get the Lead Out campaign. Get the Lead Out is an outreach and education program designed to reduce bird exposure to lead-based fishing tackle by encouraging people to replace lead sinkers and jigs with non-toxic alternatives. Retired Department of Natural Resources officer Carrol Henderson spoke to the Senate Committee to give some background, explaining that 11-12% of all loon mortality in the state is caused by lead poisoning when the birds pick up lead from lake bottoms. Loons and swans alike ingest rocks to aid in digestion. “Sinkers are just the right size for gizzard stones,” Tanner explained. “They pick it up preferentially.” The committee had agreed to release the $1.27 million for Get the Lead Out earlier in the meeting, but they received Troop 56807’s statements. Chair Bill Ingebrigtsen (R-Alexandria) thanked them for the work they did. Get the Lead Out programming will include outreach such as tackle swaps that enable fisherpersons to try out non-toxic sinkers and jigs, as well as education through local outdoor sports organizations and community events. Right now, it’s not easy for people to find non-toxic alternatives in their local tackle supply shops, but Tanner and others hope that will change with pressure from educated consumers who have the power to shift the market. Joe’s Sporting Goods currently carries several alternatives, and Water Gremlin produces at least one tin variety of sinkers, Tanner said. Swagger Tackle Co. is a Woodbury-based company that makes tungsten sinkers, and Tiger Eye is another Minnesota company that produces handmade glass lures. “With Get the Lead out coming back, people can recog-

nize alternatives that are available,” Tanner said. A large shift away from toxic fishing tackle is the most effective way to reduce waterfowl deaths from lead toxicity, Tanner explained. In theory, lake bottoms could be dredged to remove the harmful tackle, but it would be expensive and not particularly helpful. “The input that’s still going in is very high,” she said. “It wouldn’t make sense to do dredging until we can stop what’s being put in.” On her last outing to Sucker Lake, Hartmann counted 150 swans. So far, all have been lively and healthy. She frequently sends her photos to Tanner, who keeps her updated on how the images are used to educate others about swans on local lakes. “We appreciate her doing that so much,” Tanner said. “Having those photos really helps people understand how majestic they are. Because she was out doing the photography, she was the one who first encountered the dead swans at Sucker Channel. The easy access trails aren’t maintained in winter; you have to hike in. It’s kind of hidden. The fact that she was out there doing her photography and spending so much time out there alerted us to that issue, otherwise we wouldn’t know it was happening or the extent.” “That keeps me motivated to keep going and taking pictures,” Hartmann said. “The visuals are so important. I never get tired of taking pictures of them.”

win City Underwriters is an independent insurance agency that represents the leading Medicare insurance companies. Their experienced and licensed agents are knowledgeable about the different types of Medicare Health plans available to you. Twin City Underwriters’ SurePlan Medicare SystemTM offers you peace of mind when making Medicare decisions.
S
igning up for Medicare healthcare coverage is surprisingly easy. You can even register for Medicare online at SocialSecurity.gov or by visiting your local Social Security office. Signing up for Medicare may be easy, but figuring out the best healthcare coverage for YOU is challenging. The range of healthcare options is daunting — which explains why the most common mistake seniors make when arranging for their Medicare coverage is not taking a serious look at all their options. “Failure to explore the full spectrum of Medicare options happens more often than you would imagine,” explained Choua Vang, Sales Manager at Twin City Underwriters, Inc. “Everybody is different,” emphasized Sara Rosas, a licensed agent and the Marketing Manager at Twin City Underwriters. “You don’t want a one-size-fits-all Medicare healthcare plan. You need a plan that takes into consideration your health, prescriptions, budget, travel plans, lifestyle, and many other factors.” Fortunately, numerous Medicare plans and ‘Medigap’ supplemental plans are available to customize your coverage to fit your specific needs. You will find a plethora of helpful information on the official Medicare website (Medicare.gov). Comparing these plans, however, is a formidable task. How do you determine
which healthcare plans are best for you? ou? Perhaps the most informed and useful seful resource is to consult with an insurance ance broker that specializes in Medicarecarerelated coverage. In Minnesota, Twin n City Underwriters is widely considered a leader eader in this field. In the past 52 years, tens ns of thousands of Minnesotans have put their faith in this Roseville-headquartered tered locally-owned company (which provides this service for free!). Twin City Underwriters differentiates itself with these client-focused features: The Three/Six/Five Partnership that clients have with Twin City Underwriters means a dedicated team is available 365 days a year (not just during open enrollment). Perhaps you have concerns about the insurance coverage for an upcoming medical procedure. Instead of calling the customer service number on your insurance card, you can contact a team member at Twin City Underwriters. “Our clients don’t necessarily have to call customer service at the insurance company,” said Vang. “We have developed contacts at these companies. We are here to help our clients anytime and will promptly look into their concerns. We are the buffer between the client and the company.” Educating Clients/Free Workshops. Twin City Underwriters places a high priority on educating its clients. People make more informed decisions when they have a better understanding of what is - and is not covered. This is why Twin City Underwriters offers free informative Medicare Workshops across Minnesota throughout the year. Seniors are encouraged to bring their questions and concerns. (Upcoming workshops are listed on the twincityunderwriters.com website.) Another option is making an appointment for a free one-on-one/no-obligation meeting with a Minnesota Medicare-coverage agent at Twin City Underwriters. The meeting can be on the phone or in-
person at any of the three company locations: Roseville, Bloomington, Inver Grove Heights. Twin City Underwriters developed its patented “SurePlan™ Medicare System” to ensure that each client will have a Medicare Health Plan unique to them. The three-pronged system features the “Medicare Suitability Tool” (an in depth exploration of the client’s personal lifestyle needs), a Guaranteed Annual Review (because you change and policies change) and the Three/Six/Five Partnership (offering year-round personal support). The “SurePlan™ Medicare System” provides peace of mind and sets a new standard of excellence in the industry, all at no charge. Rock Solid Reputation. Integrity and Honesty -these are essential virtues for insurance brokers entrusted with providing the best Medicarerelated healthcare plans for their clients. Twin City Underwriters boasts more than five decades of experience, plus thousands upon thousands of happy customers. In fact, the brokerage does minimal advertising because the bulk of its new customers hear about them via word-of-mouth. “Most of our clients are referrals,” said Vang. “And that says a lot about the quality of our work. The entire team here is dedicated to making sure the money you have saved over a lifetime provides you with the best possible healthcare coverage for your needs. I would like to believe we are among the best.”

HOW TO MANAGE ANXIETY AND STRESS
COVID 19: ‘We are all in this together’ BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR
In a time where there are a lot of unknowns, levels of stress, anxiety and depression can flare up. Area mental health professionals want people to know that we are all in this together and that it is normal to have these feelings. “In general, the population is more anxious and on edge because of the unknowns. There is a lot of fear going on right now about how long this might last,” said Blaine resident Tim Mortenson, CEO of Bridging Hope Counseling. The COVID 19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Mortenson's business, Bridging Hope Counseling, which has locations in Lino Lakes, Rogers and Buffalo. A lot of clients have canceled their appointments for a multitude of reasons, including the loss of a job, the inability to pay for health insurance or fear to leave one's home.
Bridging Hope Counseling is known for its dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) groups, which teach skills such as mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance. Even though the weekly groups are not able to meet right now, the group facilitators are putting together videos so their clients can keep practicing those skills. In addition to incorporating social distancing and a stricter cleaning regimen, the clinics remain open for clients who feel comfortable in making visits. For those who do not, or need to stay at home, Bridging Hope Counseling is offering Tele-Health services, which allows clients to see their therapist in an online video format. “It is not the same as meeting face-to-face, but it is important for people to have an ongoing relationship with their therapist. Seeing each other makes a big difference,” Mortenson said.
On a positive note, the pandemic is “bringing mental health to the forefront that it needs to be at,” Mortenson explained. “It is okay to have these feelings. You are not alone. We are all in this together. Nobody is excluded from what we are dealing with right now; you are either directly or indirectly affected from this. It is okay to be feeling the way you are feeling,” he said. Now is the time that people need to be vulnerable and talk about the way they are feeling instead of internalizing it. “If you do need assistance, there are people out there for you. Especially in the mental health field, there (are) a lot of great professionals out there who are trained for times like this,” Mortenson said. “Even though they are therapists, they are feeling the same exact thing right now. They have the same worries that you and I have.” Lead Editor Shannon Granholm can be reached at 651-407-1227 or quadnews@presspubs.com.
How to handle stress • People with preexisting mental health conditions should continue with their treatment plans during an emergency and monitor for any new symptoms. • Don't forget to connect with family, friends and others in your community while keeping social distancing in mind. • Avoiding excessive exposure to COVID 19 coverage and take good care of both your body and mind. This can include regular exercise and meditation, as well as eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep and avoiding alcohol and drugs. • If you think you may be dealing with some form of depression, reach out to your doctor immediately for a consultation and potential treatment. • Don't forget to practice self-care, even if that means just taking five minutes out of your day for yourself. • Breathe, get outside and take breaks from TV and social media.

The outbreak of COVID-19 may be stressful for people and communities to handle, especially as new information continues to be released at seemingly breakneck speeds. We all handle stress differently, and there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to navigating these emotionally challenging times. Fortunately, there are plenty of best practices you can follow to make illness-induced stress easier to manage.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, these businesses are adapting in an effort to keep their patrons safe. In order to stay afloat, they still need your business. Please consider supporting these businesses so they are still here when this is all over.

MONTHLY WEATHER OUTLOOK
Weather Tidbit: Welcome April. We are glad that you’re here, not that March was that bad but the warmer temperatures that come with April will certainly be welcome as we find ourselves venturing out more. I’m not sure what happen to winter weather, most notably snow. We just missed out on a few snowfalls that passed to our south and the precipitation that did fall was in the way of rain. All in all I didn’t hear many people complaining this year as I did last year when February and March were downright snowy and cold. With all that’s been going on at least the weather was a welcome relief. As the snow banks melt away the grime remains. If you’re out for a walk grab a bag and pick up what you can. Bring along a glove as some items can be sort of nasty. While we were teased with a few nice days in March the hope for above normal spring like weather might be a little delayed this April. I expect temperatures to run about normal which means 60’s the last half of the month rather than 70’s. Precipitation is in a holding pattern for now. We’ll save the rainfall for May and June.
