Cycling through the season

W

hile busy schedules and the electronic distractions of modern life continue to distance many of us from the natural world, there are some recent trends and developments that offer simple and enjoyable ways to explore and experience nature. Bicyclists of all ages can venture out on the expanding and interconnected series of multi-use trails that travel through the northeast metro area — including the Gateway, Brown’s Creek and soon to open St. Croix Crossing Trail Loop. While traveling along the trails through the wooded and semi-rural landscape, riders can stop at various parks and historical markers along the way and even visit a trailside restaurant. The more recent development of e-bikes has also expanded the age range and ability of bicyclists who can enjoy a trip on steep hills and trails that would have previously been too demanding for many riders. We hope this autumn edition of SaVour will spark your imagination and serve as a valuable resource to the full enjoyment of this beautiful (and fleeting) season.

FALL IS

electric

on the gateway trail by Jackie Bussjaeger

I

n the fall, the Gateway and Brown’s Creek Trail corridor gives any visitor a front row seat to one of nature’s finest shows. Recently, a swelling number of people are enjoying the splendor of the changing leaves via electronic bicycle, or e-bike. E-bikes have a removable, chargeable battery that can help power the rider up steep hills, or provide an extra burst of speed at the push of a button. E-bikes are still powered mostly by pedaling, but as long as they do not travel faster than 20 mph and are operable by human propulsion, they are welcome on Minnesota state trails. Tamra Hartman runs the Gateway Trailside food truck, bordered by a tidy picket fence at the Gateway’s mile marker 15. In addition to offering a menu that emphasizes fresh and local food items for bicyclists on the go, Hartman is a passionate advocate for e-bikes. She feels that these bikes have opened the trails for a lot more people to enjoy. “There are so many people that are avid bike riders on the trail that would love to share this passion with friends and loved ones, but those people have a fear of not keeping up or of ‘that hill,’” Hartman said. “We live in Stillwater so there are a lot of ‘those hills.’ We are blessed to live in a stunningly beautiful place with an amazing trail system. Isn’t it a pity to think there is an entire group of people who are missing this gift?” Hartman also offers Pedego e-bikes rentals, which can be arranged online in advance at gatewaytrailside.com Hartman isn’t the only one who has noticed an uptick in the number of people purchasing and renting e-bikes. Gateway Cycle sits in view of the trail where it runs along Highway 36 before cutting north into the forested isolation of the river valley. Since 1992, owners Joan Kahle-Berger and Bill Berger have sold bikes to thousands of visitors along the Gateway Trail corridor. “The technology has become more refined and the price has come down as more companies produce e-bikes,” said Kahle-Berger. “They are fun and easy to ride, with longer life and easily rechargeable batteries. All kinds of riders love e-bikes. Maybe you have difficulty keeping up with your partner on bike rides, or a disability that keeps you from riding a regular bike and need the assist of an e-bike. E-bikes are great for commuting, riding on longer trips, or just every day biking.” According to Liz Stejskal of the Gateway Brown’s Creek Trail Association, a recent trail use survey showed that the Gateway and Brown’s Creek trails are the most used within the Minnesota trail system. The easy access to St. Paul’s metropolitan area gives the trails a “dual personality.” “Folks who take the time to travel the entire length of these two trails really get a feel for the bustling city of St. Paul and for the wonderful pastoral landscapes just east of downtown,” Stejskal said.

presspubs.com/savour 7

The Gateway and Brown’s Creek Trail are managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. When the Soo rail line that ran alongside the river was closed in 1980, the group that would become the Gateway and Brown’s Creek Trail Association played a large role in securing the funding that established the trail. Today, the Gateway Trail runs 18 miles from St. Paul to Pine Point Park in Grant. Brown’s Creek Trail, which runs 6 miles into downtown Stillwater, was opened to the public in 2014. Built along the former Zephyr train route, the trail follows the scenic views of St. Croix River and cuts west through the woods, parallel to a pristine trout stream. This trail is fairly level and accessible to users of all abilities. This route is particularly enjoyable during the fall, when rich autumn colors surround from all sides. The DNR also hosts events along the trail. This year’s selection includes a women’s fall colors trail hike in September, and a candlelight walk and geocaching in October. See the State Trails page at www.dnr.state.mn.us for more information about upcoming events along the trails. FUTURE OF THE TRAILS The Gateway and Brown’s Creek Trail system will soon include the St. Croix Crossing trail loop. The 4.7-mile paved trail will cross over the restored Stillwater Lift Bridge, travel along the Wisconsin side of the river down to St. Joseph, where it will cross back over on the new St. Croix Crossing Bridge. From Bayport, they can head back upriver to complete the loop. MnDOT St. Croix Crossing Coordinator Todd Clarkowski said that the final portion of the loop trail is slated to open in November 2019 with the completion of the Stillwater Lift Bridge restoration project. All of the on-land portions of the trail are currently complete.

GBCTA is also aiming to extend the Gateway Trail—south to the state capitol, and north to Taylors Falls. GBCTA members encourage those who enjoy using the trails to donate or join the membership in order to help achieve some of these initiatives. Visit gatewaybrownscreektrail. org to learn more. E-BIKE SALES AND RENTALS For those interested in trying or purchasing an e-bike, there are many local options. Chilkoot Café and Cyclery, located at the top of Stillwater’s famously steep South Hill, offers a full service bike shop in addition to a hearty menu of madefrom-scratch foods and fresh-roasted coffee. Owner and manager Nik Stylos said he gets questions about e-bikes almost daily, and has begun stocking

e-bike models from Cannondale and Specialized. Thinking beyond the fall season, Stylos added that Chilkoot also offers fat tire bikes, which enable cyclists to keep riding through the winter months. Mike’s Electronic Bikes in Stillwater deals exclusively in e-bike rentals. Customers can rent brand new e-bikes from Rad Power Bikes, and receive help in crafting their own custom tour of Stillwater. “From a touring standpoint, you are able to enjoy your surroundings without exerting much effort,” owner Mike Herman said. “Little effort is needed to go up even the steepest of hills. Electric bikes also give you the ability to get as much of a workout that you would want because of the different levels of assist on the bike.”

TRAIL ETIQUETTE Many who spend time on the trails have remarked on the friendly encounters with other recreationists along the way. Here are a few tips from the Minnesota DNR to keep the Brown’s Creek and Gateway trails pleasant and safe:

Pass on the left when safe and give an audible signal Stay to the right when others approach Yield to pedestrians and slower trail users Stop at all stop signs Keep trails clean by taking trash when you leave Keep pets on a leash and under control at all times Pick up after your pets

Respect adjoining property

How to Make Car Rides Pleasant for Your Pets Use these tips to make car rides with your pets more enjoyable: Desensitize your pet to your car. Play with the pet inside the vehicle with the engine off. Provide treats and encouragement. Do this several times until the pet seems calm, then repeat the process with the engine on but the car stationary. Then take the pet on short drives, providing treats along the way, before attempting longer trips. Buy a pet harness or transport crate. Some cats and dogs do not like crates and harnesses at first, but these items generally do help pets feel more secure once they get used to them. Crates and harnesses significantly decrease the odds that the pet will be injured in a car accident, too.

Try lavender oil. Mix 10 drops of lavender oil into one ounce of water in a spray bottle, then spray the inside of your vehicle approximately one hour before taking the pet on a ride. Bring this spray bottle along on long drives, and give an additional spritz in the air if the animal shows signs of anxiety, such as excessive movement or barking.

Give some extra TLC. When feeling anxious your pet(s) may need some extra TLC. Provide them with lots of love and encouragement to help them feel more comfortable being in the car. It may take some time, but be patient.

PRATTHOMES.COM

The theme song from the 1980s sitcom Cheers could easily be adopted by the new team of owners at Forster’s Dugout in Mahtomedi. Sports fans cluster at the bar watching the playoffs, dart players heckle one another across the room and the flame grilled burgers are sizzling the olfactory senses. What was a bit dated and loved worn is new again at Forster’s Dugout. White washed paneling updates the bar area. High polish brightens the old oak floors and the cool blue paint above the split log wainscot settles around you like an early autumn sky. Forster’s Dugout Bar is new AND the same in the best of ways. The iconic neighborhood bar in the pocket of Willernie and Mahtomedi has long been a gathering spot for locals. It’s central to the area historically known as “The Front” — a beach-townboardwalk collection of clubs, pubs, cafes and commerce. The Dugout has been a fixture in Mahtomedi, in one form or another, since the trolleys brought city folk to the lakes in the 1940s. Five energetic new owners are revitalizing Forster’s Dugout as a viewing hub for sports, and as a banquet and live concert venue. With the hiring of new cooks and a kitchen, the offerings for lunch and dinner are expanding, too. Partners Brian Forster, Elissa Kasper, Jessie Tomme, Mark Hagen and Todd Rogers became good friends after years

of gathering after work at the Flame Bar just down the block. Each of them contemplated buying the Flame but it wasn’t in the cards. When The Dugout’s former owners opted for retirement, the gang stepped up to the plate. The lineup of co-owners at Forster’s Dugout, who are all local residents, bring varied business expertise to running the bar. All of them prioritize customer and community service. Ten steps from her salon and spa, Jessie Tomme’ talks about the excitement of a new venture. “It’s a much bigger operation than I had intended to take on, but its fun to share ideas… and the investment …with four good friends. We all want to run a pub where everyone enjoys hanging out.” Forster’s Dugout rocks with a club vibe when bands perform in the back room. The space, with a full bar, table seating and a dance floor, holds almost

200 people and may expand onto the outdoor patio in the future. Owner and acting manager, Brian Forster, loves the Austin,Texas music scene. He shares his vision as he pours customers a sampling of craft beers. “I’d love to throw a street dance with our neighbor bars … something with several bands and a block party festival feel that brings folks out for good music, good food and a beer with neighbors.” Co-owner Todd Rogers tosses around his plan for dart leagues and bags tournaments for corn hole enthusiasts. “We’ve got the space for all-season activities here and there’s no shortage of ideas on how to put on fun events. Most importantly, our team of owners will be around a lot making everyone feel welcome.” If you want to go where everybody knows your name, head to Forster’s Dugout. They’ll be glad you came!

Hey Bra Lady – Amy Holland

Certified Bra Fitter and Lead Stylist with Essential Bodywear

M

ost women have a disconnected understanding the importance of proper– fitting undergarments in relation to their health and appearance. In addition, shopping for undergarments is a dreaded task for most women. The majority of retailers do not stock enough sizes, nor do they have enough staff to help you. Even with assistance, a woman may not get into the correct size because her size is not in store. I have been a bra fitter, trainer and sales representative in the intimate apparel industry for the majority of my career. As a certified bra fitter I have more than two decades of experience with helping women achieve a proper fit. I am passionate about educating women on the importance of a proper–fitting bra in relationship to their breast health, back health and self-esteem. I offer women the opportunity to shop for undergarments through private fitting appointments, in-home boutiques, office parties and women’s events, and I make the experience simple, easy and fun! Private appointments are offered at my bra studio, located in St. Paul. With a group of four or more ladies, I am a mobile bra and bodywear store that travels to home or office doors. How’s that for service! I’m equipped with a fit-kit containing 53 sizes of bras (32A-44H), plus panty and shapewear sizes from S-XXXL. Clients try on my samples, and an order is placed for fresh products which are delivered to the client’s door in just a few days. With so many sizes, it’s easy to help women find their perfect size. I tell my clients, “bra fitting isn’t about measuring; it’s an interactive process, and feedback is

important.” The look on a woman’s face when she sees the difference a properly fitted bra can make her look and feel is priceless and makes me love what I do. In addition to helping women look and feel their best, I also love helping women to start their very own mobile bra and bodywear business. The direct selling channel is a great avenue for female entrepreneurship and Essential Bodywear is a company founded 16 years ago by women, with a mission of uplifting and supporting women through great products and female entrepreneurship. Bra fittings and bodywear styling are always free and every purchase supports a woman in business. Every woman deserves to look and feel her best so why not have your very own bra and bodywear stylist? I’m Amy Holland, at your service!

Signs that it is time to get a new bra: • Your bra is approaching its first birthday • You’ve lost or gained 10 or more pounds • You are going through menopause • You’ve had a new baby • You have less than three to rotate • You simply want a new one
