BY SARA MARIE MOORE VADNAIS HEIGHTS EDITOR
Oneka Elementary fi fth-grade teacher Maggie Clark, a native of Hugo and alumna of Hugo Elementary School, is the 2018 White Bear Lake Area Schools Teacher of the Year. “I really feel like I am a product of my environment from growing up in White Bear, and my family and my colleagues,” Clark said after she was named at a celebration event with other finalists at White Bear Lake Area High School – South Campus April 19. “I just hope this award reflects back to all of you and the love, support and encouragement you have showed me on my journey.” Clark was nominated by over 20 former and current students, said Principal Teresa Dahlem. Students also surprised her by joining the audience in the South Campus Theatre. Dahlem read several statements students had made about her: “She always makes learning the fun way instead of the boring way.” “She is the best teacher on earth, so loving and creative, I would have her as a teacher a million times if I could.” “If there were more teachers like Maggie Clark, the world would be a better place.” Other students mentioned how she works one-on-one if needed and understands if you make mistakes, inspires by telling students anything is possible, and helped a student to start to like math more. Dahlem said Clark didn’t start out as an elementary school teacher. She worked fi rst at her alma mater, the University of Wisconsin – River Falls in the new student family programs. However, she used personal days to sub at Hugo Elementary, Dahlem said, before being hired at Oneka Elementary. “Life has a funny way of leading us to our callings,” she noted. Her past experience transitioning students from high school to college assists Clark in her work with fi fth-graders transitioning to middle school. “Teaching kids is all about teaching them to conquer
transitions,” Dahlem said Clark told her. Other fi nalists present at the event were Ben Kirkham, North Campus language arts; Cassie Knutson, South Campus science and technology; Alli McCann, North Campus language arts; Melanie Tlusty, Central Mid-
STILLWATER — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office conducted a Recognition Ceremony April 12 at the Washington County Historic Courthouse in Stillwater, citing citizens and Sheriff’s Office staff who garnered honors in the past year. A Life Saving Award was presented to citizen Tevfi k Anafarta, who also received an award from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Anafarta witnessed his brother and a friend pull kayaks across the ice and into open water on Forest Lake in December. Then he saw the kayak tip pointing out of the water and someone trying to swim. He drove back to his house, grabbed an aluminum boat, dragged it down the shoreline and across 75 to 100 yards of ice to open water, reached the victims and pulled them out after they had been in the water for 20 to 30 minutes. A Lifesaving Award was presented to citizens Peter Dahlberg, Omar Awad, Todd Nesvold and Mark Trembreull. The men were skiing in Lake Elmo Park Reserve in February when a 62-year-old male had chest pains, nausea and

Horse show at State Fairgrounds exhibits the best BY JULIA ARNOLD CONTRIBUTING WRITER
If you’ve never attended a horse show, you’re missing out. At least that’s what North Oaks resident Stephanie Peterson will tell you. Peterson, a longtime equestrian enthusiast, joined the hosting committee behind Friends of the American Saddle Horse Show, or F.A.S.H., as insiders call it, in 2001, the first year it was held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Forest Lake resident Ellen Erchul competes in Friends of the American Saddle Horse Show (F.A.S.H.) in 2016.
She said, “People love riding and showing their horses in the historic Coliseum.” She is now the show manager but has also participated in the show. This year’s annual event will take place May 10-13. “It’s a thrill to enter the the arena riding your beautiful horse, with music playing, its tempo matched to the gait of the horse, and the crowd cheering. You can feel your adrenaline pumping. Even the horse knows it’s show time and ‘turns it on.’ It’s exciting and challenging!” What is F.A.S.H.? F.A.S.H. was started in 1981 by local trainers and exhibitors to provide an
opportunity to compete and socialize their Saddlebred, Morgan, and Hackney ponies— all energetic, high-stepping horse breeds. It has since grown into a strong regional show. F.A.S.H. will feature top-notch horses from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Colorado. Peterson and the committee enthusiastically welcome people of all ages and abilities to come watch this free show. “If you attend, you will have the opportunity to see some of the best Saddlebreds, Morgans and Hackney Ponies in the world compete,” she explained. “Many of the horses at our show are SEE SADDLEBREDS, PAGE 16
