What better way to enjoy the seasonal burst of color and finite days of autumn than an excursion? Defined as a short journey or trip, especially one engaged in as a leisure activity, an excursion can provide the opportunity to view our local landscape and cultural offerings from the fresh perspective of a traveler. With this issue of Savour magazine, we are featuring a wide array of potential destinations and activities, including — but not limited to — apple orchards, vineyards, restaurants, artists and art fairs throughout the Northeast Metro area and across the St. Croix River into Wisconsin. Along with a special section dedicated to “Celebrating Art,” and a comprehensive guide to local and regional vineyards, an article about Pine Tree Apple Orchard, a family owned and operated farm with deep roots in the community, is also featured as our cover story. Generations of the Jacobson family have been working at their orchard in Dellwood since 1958. We hope that the stories featured in this issue help to inspire, inform and connect you to the abundance of homegrown farms, businesses and creative endeavors that are currently being cultivated and nurtured locally. With sincere gratitude, — The Savour Team

Growing the family tree(s) Jacobson’s Pine Tree Apple Orchard continues a family legacy of more than 60 years by Debra Neutkens

F

amily and tradition are two words that best describe Pine Tree Apple Orchard. For 60 years, three generations of the Jacobson family have grown Honeycrisp, Cortland, Haralson and many other vari-

eties of pomaceous perfection. Their business, Pine Tree Apple Orchard, started in 1958 when Art Jacobson and his wife Dickie purchased a 25-acre orchard in Dellwood. The couple grew not only the family, but the orchard, going

out on a proverbial limb to purchase land to plant more trees. Art’s genius, said son Bill, was knowing development would inevitably encroach on their orchard and taking steps to lessen the impact. Today, the farm comprises 300 acres of

— If ever there was a perfect fruit, a strong contender would have to be the fat-free apple.

apple trees and strawberries. The family patriarch and matriarch have passed away, Art in 2008 and Dickie in 2016, but their six children carry on the traditions, with help from their offspring and about 130 seasonal employees. Each Jacobson sibling has a specialty that makes the business run like a welloiled machine. Barb is the oldest and is company CEO. When it’s strawberry season, she leads the picking crew. Mary and Jeanne work in the bakery during apple season and sort berries in June. They are guardians of their mom’s pie crust recipe. Nancy runs the apple sales room and manages the pick-your-own strawberry patch. John is in charge of growing the apples. Bill grows the berries and is the “Mc-

Gyver” of the tribe. “He can fix anything,” according to Barb. When apple season is in full bloom, the destination orchard is a hive of activity. The parking lot is jammed with visitors there to enjoy a yummy piece of homemade pie, munch on apples, browse the

gift shop and enjoy live entertainment. There are wagon rides, weekend pony rides, a pumpkin patch and from Sept. 22 to Oct. 21, a corn maze. Other traditional happenings are a Run and Walk for the Apples — this year it’s Oct. 20 — and a Ladies of the Lake quilting show the last two weekends in October. The annual Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic in August has raised more than $5 million for cancer research at Children’s Minnesota. The myriad activities in between the picking and baking are the Jacobson’s way of giving back to the community, a legacy started by their pioneering parents. In fact, those contributions led to the family receiving “The Spirit of White Bear Tourism Award” in 2007 from Explore White Bear. As for the apples, their newest variety is First Kiss, a cross between Honeycrisp and MonArk developed at the University of Minnesota. The apple debuted at this year’s State Fair, about the time it ripens.

Pine Tree was one of the test sites for the new variety. Barb said the apple has a classic tartness that Minnesotans enjoy. Barb attributes their success to a great family dynamic. “We work well together and we like what we do,” she said. They still worry about Mother Nature. It’s a farming enterprise after all, so weather can deal unexpected challenges. There were years, for example, when they hired a helicopter to create a downward draft of warm air over the trees when early frost threatened the crop. Then there’s the possibility of hail pummeling the delicate blossoms. When she talks about weather threats to the family livelihood, Barb knocks on wood. You can never be too careful. Asked if there’s anything she’d like people to know, the eldest sibling replied: “We are all still involved and we enjoy being part of the community. We grew up here and we are still here.” Their mission, Barb said, is to educate people about growing apples. “We want people to know that apples do not come from supermarkets; they come from trees.”

Lexington Floral The perfect floral accompaniment for any occasion From a stunning collection of gorgeous white asiatic lilies, to a whimsical burst of sunflowers dancing among blue hydrangea, to a simple grouping of fall greenery woven into the rich hues of autumn blooms, Lexington Floral is ready to create the perfect floral accompaniment for any occasion - or, for everyday. The Shoreview business has launched a floral subscription service that takes the worry out of ordering flowers on a regular basis. Lexington Floral’s automatic floral and plant subscription service delivers custom hand-picked arrangements

or plants to homes or businesses via monthly or weekly subscriptions. Customers choose the price range, frequency, and day of delivery; the rest is up to the design team at Lexington Floral. A delivery fee is charged for the initial order but waived after that, as long as the subscription is active. Arrangements such as their Designer’s Choice Seasonal Selection, Plants for a NotSo-Green Thumb, or High Style and Tropicals, featuring fresh vibrant exotics like Orchids, Ginger or Birds of Paradise, are just a few of the selections; most are priced between $24.95 and $39.95 per arrangement.

Another subscription option is their “We’ve Got Your Back!” package, with automatic deliveries on special dates of the customer’s choosing - no more panic on big days and holidays. “Customers can choose their price point and the occasions and holidays when they would like them delivered for instance Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries,” said owner Allie Tempelis. They’ll even swap out the vase - no more stockpile of old vases sitting around, and less waste. It’s a service that anyone who’s ever forgotten a birthday or anniversary can appreciate - and it’s simple to set up. “It’s great for customers who may otherwise wait till the last minute. They give us the dates and other details, such as someone’s favorite flower. We’ll call for a card message before each delivery. They won’t be invoiced until we input the order,” Tempelis explained. All arrangements are designed in a vase at the store and delivered by

Lexington Floral drivers a definite advantage over national brands that come in a box, not arranged, and may be of questionable quality, added Tempelis. She should know - she’s the shop’s third generation owner. Some subscribers choose to have flowers delivered regularly to a loved one in a nursing home, or someone experiencing an extended illness. Businesses find that having fresh flowers or plants on the front desk makes a more welcoming atmosphere for their customers. Lexington Floral also offers unique floral arrangements for weddings and parties, workshops, and a large selection of luxury home goods, natural body care products and locally made gifts. The shop will celebrate its 33rd anniversary in October. Lexington Floral is located at 3414 Lexington Ave North, Shoreview, MN; call 651-483-2786 or visit www. lexingtonfloral.com.

Apple-Pecan Baked Beans

by Victoria Valley Orchard, Cindy Papenheim 1 (28 oz.) can baked beans (Bush’s Country Style suggested) 1 tsp. liquid smoke (or ½ tsp. if prefer less) 2 tbsp. butter 1 large apple, peeled and finely diced 1 medium onion, finely diced 6 slices bacon, diced ¼ c. packed brown sugar ½ c. chopped pecans

Absinthe Yes, it’s legal, and has a fascinating history. Try it in our “Original Sin” cocktail or traditional with sugar and water.

In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced onions and apples and saute until the apples and onions are tender. Add bacon and continue cooking until the bacon is cooked but not crisp. Add pecans and brown sugar and continue sauteing for another minute. Place beans in 1 1/2-quart casserole and mix with liquid smoke and half of the apple-pecan mixture. Spread the other half of the mixture over the top of the beans. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes, until the beans are bubbly and the bacon on top has browned. Makes 5-6 servings.

The classic French absinthe ritual involves placing a sugar cube on a flat perforated spoon, which rests on the rim of the glass containing a measure or “dose” of absinthe. Iced water is then very slowly dripped on to the sugar cube, which gradually dissolves and drips, into the absinthe, causing the green liquor to louche (“loosh”) into an opaque opalescent white as the essential oils precipitate out of the alcoholic solution.

Truman Company

top-rated coin and precious metal exchange More than 40 years in business has given The Truman Company owner Roger Westerling a clear idea of what customers want in a coin and precious metals dealer. Most of all, he says, it’s to be treated fairly.

Personalized service and competitive pricing are the hallmarks of The Truman Company. Taking care of customers and giving them a fair price are values handed down from Westerling’s Uncle Truman, who taught him about the metals and coins business as a young man. After obtaining his business degree, Westerling spent many years working with some of the finest and most prominent dealers in the business before establishing The Truman Company in 2010. Customers may be local, regional or national. Westerling prefers the local business because he loves interacting with customers.

The Truman Company buys gold and silver bullion, old gold and silver jewelry (scrap gold), and other collectables. Their specialty is the coin business. Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a Bullion Coin Dealer, the company is one of the leading rare coin and precious metals dealers in the Twin Cities, often beating the prices of low-cost internet companies.

Paul Dols

“I believe in the repeat customer. If you treat everyone fairly they will come back,” Westerling said. “Doing business in the right and honest way is important. Most of our business is repeat customers. I want to make everyone’s experience pleasant and as stress-free as possible.”

Aidan and Roger buying another coin deal with the help of Sonny. Often, he says, people come in wanting to buy something tangible thinking that the price will go up. Sometimes a customer will inherit an item or a whole estate, with no clue what they have. Westerling and his team go into the home and make a list of every item, with their offer price. Some of their more unusual “finds?” “Coins that people have no idea that they had something rare until we tell them,” Westerling said. “One case comes to mind - they thought they just had old baseball cards but they had cards from the 50s-60s that were in the low six-figures.” The biggest mistake people make, Westerling said, is to clean an item. “Do

Not Clean,” he emphasized. “It totally destroys the collector value of any coin. Just box them up and bring them to us. We’re happy to sort and itemize and we can do it much faster.” Westerling and his store manager Aidan Kelly, both love to be in the shop every day, “not knowing what will walk in the door next.” And of course, Sonny, the labrador retriever, is in the shop every day to greet visitors. Starting in September, The Truman Company will be open weekdays until 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10-2, or by appointment. Visit The Truman Company at 2585 Hamline Avenue North Suite E, Roseville, MN, call 651-582-3865 or www.trumanrc.com.
