March is certainly a busy month on the events calendar, starting with St David’s Day on 1 March, closely followed by Mother’s Day on 11 March, then it’s St Patrick’s Day on 17 March, and finally Easter falls early this year, with Good Friday making its entrance at the end of the month on 30 March! Phew! And if that wasn’t enough for your diary, British Summer Time begins on Sunday 25 March when clocks go forward one hour at 1am (remember the old saying ‘Spring forward, Fall back’?) making the evenings much lighter. Plenty of dates and events to remember this month, eh?! This month, we have as always squeezed as much as we possibly can between the covers. You will find adverts from new businesses as well as our regular advertisers, and everything you can possibly think of from bathrooms to boilers, pets to plumbers, and cars to carpets. There is also our usual handy index at the back to help you find what you are looking for. As expected, many of our adverts have Mother’s Day in mind, the day which is all about showing your mum how much you love and appreciate her, so for goodness sake, don't you go and forget this special day! Make sure you send a card and treat your mum to that special lunch, order a lovely bunch of flowers or go shopping and seek out something really special to give to her! The following pages have plenty of ideas and will help you plan your special treat – meals out, beauty packages and spa treatments to name just a few!

Our prize crossword continues to be very popular, with many entries from far and wide being received every month. Could your luck be in this month? As usual, I invite you to pop on the kettle, make a cuppa, put your feet up and have a go. Once again our crossword is sponsored by Hendersons Sales & Letting Agents of Flowergate and the prize on offer is a fabulous £25.00 Store gift card. Our grateful thanks to Nick Henderson and his wonderful team for donating this great prize. Twelve years on and counting and now distributing 23,000 copies every month throughout Whitby and the surrounding district, we have established ourselves as the number one choice for advertising in the area. If you are a business and would like to advertise in next month’s Whitby Advertiser, don’t delay – just give us a call today and let us help you promote your business. Choose the best. Choose the Whitby Advertiser and bring that muchneeded extra business to your door. Have a great March folks!

FIRST TIME BUYERS: A GUIDE TO THE PROCESS OF BUYING YOUR FIRST HOME Our focus again this month is First Time Buyers (FTB) and how the whole process works from start to finish. STEP 1 – BUDGET Like anything in life, knowing what you can afford to purchase is a major factor when it comes to home hunting. So the first logical step is to see your bank or make an appointment with an independent mortgage advisor. Your bank or mortgage advisor will be able to work out how much you can afford to loan based on your income and deposit that you have saved. STEP 2 – START FINDING THAT DREAM HOME Looking for your dream home is great fun. It is a good idea to get a list of must haves, areas that you are wanting to live in and the style of house that you want. Remember don’t be to strict with your list it is better to get more information on homes available, than miss one due to the fact it doesn’t have a south facing garden. exciting time to put your offer forward. The estate agent will be the direct contact between you, the purchaser and the vendor. Once an acceptable level has been reached, you will need to find a solicitor. We always recommend using a local firm, they will know the area and any slight issues that the area might have. STEP 4 – SOLICITORS, EXCHANGE & COMPLETION For a speedy purchase it is a good idea to instruct your solicitor ASAP, sign their terms of business and pay for the initial searches. Your solicitor will then apply for the searches, raise any queries on the draft contact. They will then go through the fixtures and fittings form, along with the property information form with you. Once all the queries have been answered. You will have to pay your deposit in readiness to exchange, your solicitor will contact the bank to draw down the funds. This normally takes 5 days but each lender is different. Monies will be transferred to the vendors solicitor and formal completion will take place.

STEP 5 – KEYS & MOVE IN

STEP 3 – VIEWING AND OFFERING Go and have a look at a selection of your favourite properties. Once you have found the one, the 40

Great news you are now the legal owners of the property and you can collect your keys so you can move in. A good tip is that all the utilities providers are located on the last page of the property information form. Good luck in your new home!

PET INSURANCE - GET YOUR PETS POLICY RIGHT!

Responsible pet owners will do everything they can to ensure their four legged friends are healthy and happy. But illness and injury can develop in even the fittest and brightest of animals - and often it can’t be prevented or foreseen.

That’s when having a good pet insurance policy allows you to concentrate on what’s best for your pet, knowing help is there to cover the cost of any unexpected treatment. Be careful when searching for a new policy. Do not simply go for the cheapest. Often, policies will only cover a new condition for a year, then after that you will have to pay for any further/ ongoing treatments and medications. With an aging pet population, often conditions will require management for many years until the end of the pet’s life. Companies may only offer one set amount ‘pot’ of money for each year. Once this is used up, there will be no further help regardless of the occurrence of new conditions. Some companies will offer a covered for life option and/or will provide a new pot of money for each new injury of illness, which is often invaluable. If you need any further convincing that pet insurance is a necessity, here is a list of the 4 most common ailments that have been put forward for insurance claims for dogs, cats and rabbits. For some of the conditions, an average lifelong cost of treatment/management appears in bold. DOGS

Gastroenteritis – this is an irritation of the stomach and intestines that has several causes including inflammatory bowel disease, parasites, bacteria, viruses, allergies and eating inappropriate food such as table scraps. Skin allergies – typical allergens include food, dust mites, fleas, pollens, trees and grass, and this can develop into inflammatory, chronic skin disease. It is more common in dogs under the age of three, especially in Labradors, Westies and Beagles (£20,000).

Arthritis – a common ailment afflicting dogs, particularly those in old age. But early detection can limit the damage caused to joints, so know the signs. Lumps and bumps – all dogs can develop lumps and bumps in layers of fat, skin and muscle and there 80

MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS

are many causes, which will need to be determined by your vet. But often, lumps are generally harmless fatty tumours or lipomas. CATS

Gastroenteritis – inflammatory bowel disease, parasites, bacteria, hairballs and eating inappropriate food or things like meat string can all cause stomach irritation. Hyperthyroidism – this disorder happens when the thyroid glands in the neck produce too much thyroid hormone, and can often be caused by noncancerous tumours.

Kidney disease - Cats are particularly prone to kidney damage and it has a variety of causes. Infections, cancers, exposure to toxins, and malfunction of the immune system may all be responsible for starting a slow process of damage, leading eventually to kidney failure (£3,000). Cystitis – conditions that affect a cat’s bladder and urethra are collectively known as feline lower urinary tract disease, more commonly referred to as cystitis. Causes include stress, not urinating enough, infections and bladder stones or crystals. RABBITS

Gut stasis – also known as ileus, is a potentially fatal condition in which the normal contractions of the intestines either slow down or stop altogether, causing bloating and pain. A lack of appetite, often caused by dental disease, is a common cause (£500). Eye disorders – a healthy rabbit has bright, shiny, moist eyes that glimmer in the light. Signs of eye disorders such as conjunctivitis and the pasteurella bacteria can include discharge, bulging around the eyeball and pupils of different sizes. Cataracts and ulcers are also a common eye complaint in rabbits.

Lumps and bumps – abscesses are the most common cause of lumps and bumps in rabbits and are caused by pockets of infection. They can occur anywhere on a rabbit’s body but are most common around the jaws due to dental disease. Respiratory disease – there are many causes of respiratory problems, commonly called ‘snuffles’, which is characterised by runny eyes and noses, and sneezing. The two most common respiratory infections include bordetellosis and pasteurellosis.
