JULY 2018

Stephen Ault Hello and welcome to the July issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the popular local magazine regarded as the number one choice for EDITOR

advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy our latest issue. Well, we're only half way through 2018 but already what a year it's turning out to be! We've had the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea in February, a Royal Birth in April, then a Royal Wedding in May and as I write this sports fever is hitting the country with the start of the World Cup in Moscow which will continue well into July alongside Wimbledon fortnight which starts on 2 July! CALL US Back here in Whitby it has been a somewhat quiet year, though the arrival of a full-scale replica of Captain James Cook’s ship HM Bark Endeavour mid-May drew large crowds. Built on Teesside, this replica (not to be confused with the one built in Fremantle Australia which E-MAIL US visited Whitby in 1997 & 2002) is to be a permanent visitor attraction info@whitbyadvertiser.co.uk and a restaurant. Many events are planned for the summer season FIND US ONLINE so Whitby will be anything but quiet! Events this month include www.whitbyadvertiser.co.uk festivities celebrating the 250th anniversary of Cook setting out on the Endeavour for his first voyage of discovery. Hopefully July will WRITE TO US bring much more sunshine than June so that we can enjoy these Whitby Advertiser Ltd festivities as well as barbecues and picnics, great family days down on Green Lane Centre, the beach and lazy, warm summer evenings in the garden! WHITBY SALON CHEEVERS CELEBRATE THEIR 30TH BIRTHDAY!

Congratulations to Cheevers Hair Design who are celebrating their 30th anniversary. Salon owner Jennifer Freeman returned to Whitby after living in York and overseas in 1988 to find a shop available at 10 St Ann’s Staith. With the support of her parents and also husband Tony who designed and renovated the shop, the doors of the hairdressing salon with a view second to none overlooking the harbour and beyond, opened on 19th July 1988.

• Top quality and up-to-date products are always offered at Cheevers - such as Redken’s Chromatics

Over the past 30 years, the salon has trained over 30 apprentices, of which quite a few have gone on to follow careers in hairdressing. The success of Cheevers is its passion to achieve high standards, creating a friendly and caring atmosphere whilst keeping ahead of the game, training and offering up-to-date styling using top quality products such as Redken, L’Oreal, Morroccan Oil and Wella. Cheevers were the first to sell GHD products which were launched in 2001. The salon has also supported breast cancer research for 14 years, putting on a fund raiser pink day every October. Jennifer says that she could not have achieved all that she has without her dedicated staff past and present, particularly Michelle who has been a loyal and supportive member of staff for 20 years. The salon also deeply appreciates the loyalty of clients both past and present, some who have been coming to the salon from the beginning and 18

FLYING HIGH ON A WING-WALK FUNDRAISER! Karin Henderson will be strapped to a vintage biplane before flying to a height of 500ft (152m) above an airfield in Lincolnshire on Sunday 22nd July.

Karin, who works in her son Nick’s estate agency, Hendersons at 21 Flowergate, Whitby wanted a challenge to celebrate a special birthday in July. Karin’s husband very kindly bought her a “wingwalk” as a gift and they decided as it is such a big challenge that Karin should raise money for a local charity. Saint Catherine’s was suggested by Karin’s friend Paula Noble who, as Charity Champion at the Sainsbury’s store Whitby, has worked closely with Saint Catherine’s fundraising team as part of the store’s 2017/2018 Charity of the Year partnership and has been impressed with the level of services provided by the local Hospice.

Article courtesy of Hendersons Estate Agents, Whitby

Saint Catherine’s is an adult Hospice that each year needs around £5.5 million to deliver its sixteen services both in the Hospice and in the Home across the 1600 square mile area it serves. The Hospice works with over 3000 patients, families and carers each year. Saint Catherine’s relies on 70% of its funding to come from voluntary donations, which means that individual and businesses such as Karin and Hendersons really does help the charity continue to provide patient care free of charge.

Fundraiser Debbie Kay said “We are delighted Karin has chosen to nominate Saint Catherine’s to benefit from donations made to support Karin’s amazing wing-walk experience. I have worked in fundraising for many years and we have not had a wing-walk before and we are looking forward to seeing Karin’s video from the day.” For further information please contact Debbie Kay on 01723 378406

DEALING WITH AN ESTATE: YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Hannah Morgan answers your questions on dealing with an estate. Q: What should I do first? A: The first priorities are to secure the person’s house and find out if they had a Will. It could contain instructions • Hannah Morgan for their funeral and on who should look after children or pets. The hospital or GP will provide a medical certificate and within five days, you’ll need to take it to the person’s local Registry Office to register the death. The funeral can now be arranged but take legal advice if there is no Will or you’re not an appointed Executor as you may not be entitled to recover costs. Q: What if there’s no Will or I’m not a named Executor? A: Appointed Executors are legally responsible for informing certain institutions of the death so you will need to find out who they are. Without a Will, the estate will be distributed according to ‘intestacy’ rules. Many modern family set ups are not recognised under the rules so even if the family agree, it’s worth taking legal advice to make sure those who should be provided for, are. Q: Who deals with Administration of the Estate? A: This involves gathering details of the person’s debts, finances and other assets to ensure debts are paid and the remaining estate is distributed according to the Will or intestacy rules. Executors are responsible for administering the estate but should seek legal help if they are unsure about their duties. If there is no Will, responsibility lies with an appointed Administrator. A solicitor can advise who this should be. Q: What is Probate? A: Probate gives Executors the power to deal with the assets of the estate. Until Probate is granted, you cannot sell property, access bank accounts, pay outstanding bills or distribute the assets of the estate. Executors can apply for probate but the process can be complex and time consuming so many seek legal advice. Q: When should I contact a solicitor? A: At any time during the process although it is often easier at the beginning so you can get the right

advice for your situation. You can choose who you want to work with and don’t need to use the solicitor who drafted or holds the Will. You will almost certainly need to take legal advice if: • There is no Will or you think there is one but can’t find it • Executors are unable or too busy to deal with administration of the estate • Executors are unable to find or obtain paperwork for debts and assets or need help to access digital information • Complications or uncertainty exists around ownership of property or other assets • The estate will be subject to inheritance tax or contains Trusts • Outstanding debts outweigh the value of the estate • The Will is unclear or you believe it is invalid, fraudulent or contains errors • The Will does not provide for children or other financial dependents If you are dealing with an estate and need advice, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help.

IS THERE MORE TO GROOMING THAN MEETS THE EYE?

We all know we should do it, but what does grooming really do for your pet besides making them look pretty? Grooming is not just about maintaining your dog’s level of cleanliness, and it is not just about keeping your dog good-looking. Grooming is about maintaining both your dog’s physical health as well as her appearance. In general terms, a clean pet is a happy pet. No hair in the eyes, clean fur and skin, clipped nails and clean teeth all make for a pet that is comfortable and better behaved. But adverse, serious side effects occur when we neglect to groom our pets. If we don’t tend to our pet’s grooming needs on a regular basis, we encourage a variety of issues which can lead to expensive vet bills and difficult or even aggressive behaviour from your pet. To do this you must begin training your dog to endure grooming while she is still a puppy. If you wait too long to begin the grooming sessions, your puppy may not be agreeable to it later on, especially when it comes to ear cleaning and nail clipping. This is especially important for long-haired dogs, which require more intense grooming sessions as compared to short-haired dogs. It takes more time to brush their long fur and they need to get used to staying still for this starting at an early age. That is not to say dogs with short coats do not require grooming. Long hair is the culprit of a variety of discomfort and skin issues. Hair hanging over your pet’s eyes can restrict vision altering the pet’s capabilities and behaviour. When long hair is not brushed and washed regularly, pets often suffer matting and can load your pet with extra weight. Matting of the hair can be painful and cause many skin conditions. Severe matting restricts blood flow, pulling tightly on a pet’s skin and making a simple pat painful. In some cases, matting can be so severe that it restricts body movement leading to deformity and extreme behavioural problems. Brushing is beneficial for all kinds of dogs no matter what breed they are, helping to remove dead hair, dirt, and dandruff. Regular brushing also helps to bring out the natural oils in the dog’s fur. As you brush, the natural oils are spread all over your puppy’s fur giving the coat a healthy sheen. 80

MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS

You can begin grooming a puppy when she is as young as three weeks old. Experienced breeders will even begin acquainting their puppies with grooming before they go to their new homes. Another benefit of grooming is that it allows you to check your dog for any abnormalities. This includes skin problems such as parasites and dry patches, or issues with their nails, teeth, ears, and eyes such as infection or inflammation. When found at an early stage, these problems can be treated immediately, before they have a chance to become more serious. Overgrown nails can be very painful, with long nails growing into the paw pads and causing infection. Long nails can cause your pet’s toes to bend and create a walking disfigurement. Grass seeds will not be easily detected if you are not hands-on with your grooming, undetected grass seeds can lead to abscesses and severe infection. It is common for pets to receive severe injuries from an undetected grass seed that enters through the skin and migrates through the body tissues. Fleas, ticks and mites are some of the most common parasites that can be fatal to your pet. Plus they thrive on dirty and untreated bodies. All of these issues can be detrimental to your pet’s mental wellbeing, due to the discomfort and pain they can cause. By tending to your pet’s grooming needs on a regular basis you can optimise your pet’s physical and mental health. Summary of the benefits of pet grooming: • A pet that looks and smells nice all the time, plus your best friend will be free from discomfort, feel great and behave well.

• Reduced risk of eye, ear, skin, teeth and nail infections, ensuring your pet is free from pain and disease! • Easy vet checks as your pet will be more comfortable and used to being handled, especially around the face, feet and tail. Less stress for all involved! • Increased sociability as grooming becomes a positive experience and easy for both you or your groomer and your pet. • Lower medical bills as regular grooming will prevent disease and catch many health issues before they become an emergency.
