Hello and a very warm welcome to our August issue! I hope that the sun is shining wherever you are today and that you are enjoying a really good summer whether you are a regular reader of our magazine, a business, visitor or holidaymaker to the area. Please take time to browse this packed issue which I am sure will keep you glued to your deckchair - see what our advertisers have to offer, find out what events are happening around the district and of course have a go at our wonderful crossword which boasts a £25 MasterCard gift card as its prize kindly donated as ever by that most splendid of chaps Nick Henderson of Hendersons Sales & Letting Agents! Well, the summer season is now at its height in Whitby and in addition to the ever-popular Regatta and Folk Weeks, hundreds of other events and activities are place. We have squeezed as many of these as we can into our monthly What’s On listings. I am so hoping that the weather will be much better than the unsettled weather we experienced during much of July, and hopefully hotter-than-average temperatures and wall-towall sunshine will dominate August so that we can enjoy all these wonderful events as well as many barbecues, picnics and great family days down on the beach. For those who have to work, don’t forget to treat yourself – pop down to your local pub or relax in the garden with a well-deserved pint or a blissful glass of wine after your work is done!

Deadline for advertisers: WEDNESDAY 14th AUGUST

If you are looking to eat out, why not check out our regular Dining Out guide which is always full of ideas and great meal deals. It's not often that you will find our hard-working team relaxing down at the local pub as we are always hard at work, either out and about in the area and on the phone engaging with businesses old and new about advertising, as well as seeking out events, articles and promotions to fill our magazine each month. As Walt Disney once said: ‘We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths’. If you are a business and would like to advertise in the September issue of the Whitby Advertiser, don’t delay; call us today as space is filling up fast! We offer a friendly yet professional service which includes the services of our dedicated graphic designer Graham, who will change any existing artwork you have for your advert or create an advert from scratch, all at no extra charge. The Whitby Advertiser – the popular longestablished independent magazine that fulfills your advertising needs and bring business to your door. Regarded as the number one choice for advertising in and around Whitby and now distributing 24,000 copies door-to-door each month, why go and advertise elsewhere? Enjoy August folks!

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:

‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

TALKING ABOUT ALLERGENS AND YOUR PETS

What are allergies? - When a normally harmless substance (which for most animals poses no problem) is identified by the allergic animal as a ‘threat’, their immune system produces an inappropriate response, resulting in the symptoms that we see. These substances, known as allergens, can enter the body by being inhaled, eaten or absorbed through the skin. Some things your pet may be allergic to: FOOD ALLERGENS Red meat, Poultry, Game, Fish, Cereals, Cows’ milk, Eggs INDOOR ALLERGENS Storage mites, House dust mites, Dander, Moulds, Fleas OUTDOOR ALLERGENS Grasses, Weeds, Trees, Shrubs, Insects Symptoms of allergy SKIN - itchy, irritated, spotty (over-grooming for cats) EARS - hot, sore, itchy PAWS - persistent licking, chewing, nibbling TUMMY - loose motions, weight loss BREATHING - coughing, wheezing, struggling to breathe (especially cats) If you suspect that your pet has an allergy, the next step is to try and work out what might be causing it. Your vet will advise on whether the following process, which can aid in both the diagnosis and management of your pet’s condition, is appropriate. Any costs involved may even be covered by your pet insurance. Please note: Other potential reasons for your pet’s symptoms should be ruled out by your vet before performing an allergy test. TAKE BLOOD Your vet will take a small sample of blood for testing. This should ideally be when your pet’s symptoms are at their worst and before any treatments are administered or changes in diet are made, which may alter the test results. THE LAB The sample is submitted to Avacta Animal Health. They will run a selection of tests to identify what may be contributing to your pet’s allergies. This takes between 7 and 10 days to complete. AIDING DIAGNOSIS Avacta then provide a comprehensive report demonstrating which allergens your pet is particularly sensitive to in terms of food, the indoor & outdoor environment and certain contributing secondary 90

infections. Your vet will then interpret these results alongside your pet’s history. They will also provide useful fact sheets to help avoid problem allergens.

THE TREATMENT PLAN A treatment plan will be devised by your vet based on the results. This may include: avoidance of environmental allergens, immunotherapy (desensitises your pet to allergens), oral or injectable medications to help stop the itch, dietary changes, antibacterial shampoos or other topical therapies THE OUTCOME Getting the right information and correct diagnosis at the start of the process will help you manage your pet’s condition and provide the best long-term solution for a happier life. For further info please visit avactaanimalhealth.com

For any help or advice with your pet please do not hesitate to give us a call on 01947 820333 and remember we are available 24/7 for any pet emergencies.
