NEWS BRIEFS DEATHS ‘NOT BELIEVED TO BE SUSPICIOUS’ Squamish RCMP have confirmed what has been circulating on local social media for two weeks.

Two people died in a popular recreation area on July 5.

That day, the Sea to Sky RCMP in Squamish say they were called about a woman whose body was found in the Mamquam River about 17 kilometres along the Mamquam Forest Service Road.

RCMP officers and Squamish Search and Rescue went to the scene, where a second man was found dead at a nearby campsite.

According to RCMP, an investigation was then started by the Sea to Sky RCMP General Investigation Section.

Based on the investigation so far, the circumstances around the deaths are not believed to be suspicious and no foul play is suspected, RCMP said.

The BC Coroners Service says it is investigating the deaths.

No other information was released by officials.

The incident happened on July 11, at 7:43 a.m., near Furry Creek, exactly seven days after a motorcycle crash that took the female rider’s life and closed the highway overnight.

In this more recent case, the 22-year-old woman from Vancouver, who has a Class 7 driver’s licence (passenger vehicle learner) and a Class 8 licence (motorcycle learner) was clocked by a BC Highway Patrol officer going 177 kilometres per hour (km/h) in an 80 km/h zone.

“Sometimes we feel like a broken record when we say that speed kills people,” BC Highway Patrol Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said in a news release.

“Clearly some people aren’t getting the message. Being 97 km/h over the limit could easily have repeated a tragedy.”

The downtown bike fire last week was started by a person having a mental health crisis, according to Fire Chief Aaron Foote.

The fire on Sunday on Loggers Lane and Victoria Street, which was shared by some on local social media, was a pile of belongings, including a regular bicycle, that burned, Foote said.

No injuries were reported; however, the RCMP were called to assist the person in crisis.

Battery fires Foote said that while the bicycle in this case

was not an e-bike, the fire department is seeing a rise in lithium battery fires in all types of equipment such as bicycles, laptop computers, cell phones and the like.

“These fires pose a significant risk to the public as they burn rapidly, above normal combustion temperatures and are more difficult to extinguish,” Foote said.

“Lithium releases oxygen when it reaches combustion temperatures which starts a process called ‘thermal runaway,’ ABC-type fire extinguishers can be used, but the best way to extinguish these types of fires is lots of water from a safe distance.”

B.C. COMMITS TO KEEP SQUAMISH-100 MILE HOUSE RAIL CORRIDOR PUBLIC

he provincial government says it will ensure the Squamish through 100 Mile House rail corridor remains under public ownership as the CN Rail discontinuance process continues.

Minister of Transportation and Transit Mike Farnworth released a statement on July 13.

As the first phase of the advance notice period for CN ended on July 11, CN can now advertise its railway operating rights, allowing any interested operators to take over should CN choose to proceed with the next step in the federal discontinuance process.

Farnworth said representatives with the provincial government have been in contact with CN since the process began.

“Since CN Rail initiated the federal railway discontinuance process in July 2025, we have remained engaged with the company, communities and industry partners,” he said in the statement.

The issue has been top of mind for many in Squamish and beyond, with advocates pushing for a new short-line carrier to take over and prevent the rail from being turned into salvage if no takers are found.

Farnworth acknowledged the concern and advocacy in his statement.

“I know communities, businesses, tourism operators and workers along the rail corridor between Squamish and 100 Mile House are looking for certainty about what comes next,” he said, adding that CN will inform the provincial government if they decide to advertise the operating lease for sale as their next step.

He reiterated that the province will work to keep the rail corridor in public hands.

“Our government is committed to protecting the long-term public interest. The lands and rail infrastructure are owned by the BC Railway Company, a (provincial) Crown corporation, and we intend to keep this rail corridor in public hands for the benefit of British Columbians,” he said.

“Although CN has not used this section of the corridor for freight operations since 2020, it remains an important asset with potential future value for communities along the route.

process,” he said, adding that the government is working to see what would work best as its next iteration, post-CN. Rocky Mountaineer, a rail tour service, uses the track but has announced this may be its last season on it, due to the discontinuance issue.

“The Ministry of Transportation and Transit and the BC Railway Company have been engaging with industry partners to better understand future opportunities for the corridor. This rail line is more than infrastructure; it is an asset that could support future goods movement, strengthen supply chains, connect communities and create economic opportunities throughout the region provided commercially viable operations can be established,” Farnworth said.

“Our focus remains on following the federal process, engaging with CN and partners and ensuring the interests of British Columbians are protected every step of the way. We will continue to work with communities, industry partners and First Nations and provide updates as more information becomes available.”

‘NO TIMELINE’ A spokesperson for CN confirmed to The Squamish Chief it has completed the 12-month mandatory public notice period outlined in its three-year plan regarding the potential discontinuance of operations on portions of the Squamish and Lillooet subdivisions.

“Throughout the past year, CN has remained actively engaged with the province of British Columbia, including the Ministry of Transportation and Transit and its partners along the corridor,” the spokesperson said.

“CN continues to assess next steps, with no timeline being established for moving to the next stage of the process.”

‘WE ARE NOT SELLING IT’ In the spring, MLA Jeremy Valeriote questioned Farnworth in the Legislature about the issue during budget deliberations.

At the time, Farnworth said the provincial government was seeking answers from CN about, among other things, the condition of the track and maintenance costs, “so that we

are in the best position to move forward in terms of what the options are for … that line from both a social and an economic perspective.”

Farnworth noted CN has a “very long” lease on the line. If they try to sublease and there are no takers, the rail corridor would come back to the government of B.C., because the rail bed is still owned by the province.

One option in the federal process is for the province to give up its interest in the line to CN for $1.

Farnworth stressed at that time this would never happen.

“We are not selling it,” he said.

‘FURTHER DELAYS WILL ONLY DEEPEN THE IMPACTS ALREADY BEING FELT’ For his part, Valeriote welcomed Farnworth’s statement but remains frustrated by the process.

here’s going to be further investigation into one of the biggest pet peeves of Sea to Sky area drivers—the higher prices at the gas pump often seen in this region.

The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) says in response to concerns expressed

by West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jeremy Valeriote in his June 24 letter, it will be further examining gas prices in the Sea to Sky. Valeriote raised concerns about fuel pricing patterns in the corridor, and whether market behaviours observed by the BCUC in its 2024 Retail Market Report and other previous reports have continued, or if the area has become distinct from the larger Vancouver market.

As part of its examination, the commission’s staff will be requesting fuel data from retail stations and local fuel distributors between Squamish and Mount Currie to update its fuel data records for the region and “to better understand the current fuel market and evolving pricing behaviours in the area,” it said in a news release.

data regarding fuel sales and margins, how gasoline and diesel prices are set in this area and at their retail station; and why gasoline

pump prices in their local market and at their retail station—if applicable—are higher than in nearby markets, the release states.

The updated information about market conditions would also help in understanding how a potential motor fuel tax, to support transit in the region, might affect fuel prices in the Sea to Sky, the release notes.

“In our previous Retail Fuel Market Report (published in 2024), BCUC staff observed that retail fuel stations in Whistler and Squamish appeared to form a part of a larger market with Vancouver. This means that retail stations may set fuel prices that are similar to stations in Metro Vancouver. However, it was noted that Squamish and Whistler had lower price volatility and may have unique operating costs—such as labour, licensing and permitting fees—that are impacting prices and retail margins,” a spokesperson for the commission said in an emailed statement.

“It is our intention to share publicly whether the previously observed behaviours have continued, once BCUC staff have received and reviewed updated data from the fuel industry.”

“The work to hand over the pedestrian bridge from the developers to the District of Squamish who will operate the bridge has begun. As this work ramps up, operational readiness is being assessed, and next steps are being identified that may require additional understanding and time,” said a spokesperson for the District in an email.

The spokesperson added that the bridge contractor is addressing “final outstanding work prior to bridge opening.”

The municipality “continues to review operational requirements, develop work procedures, and train staff on bridge operations.”

The outstanding work could take weeks, so the municipality doesn’t yet have an opening date for the public.

“Further delays will only deepen the impacts already being felt.

Local businesses have repeatedly requested freight services from CN Rail along the Squamish-100 Mile House section, only to be let down and have to resort to more costly truck transport. The Rocky Mountaineer taking a 2027 hiatus from this route will have lasting economic and reputational impacts,” he added.

“Municipal, regional and First Nations leaders from North Vancouver to Prince George are standing behind a shared vision for this corridor; it is exactly the kind of project that should be supported through Prime Minister Carney’s Trade Diversification Corridors Fund,” he continued.

“In addition to freight, passenger rail is more than a nice-to-have service in some communities—it is a lifeline, connecting people, especially young people, to education, employment, and mental health supports. It is also a potential relief valve for the Sea to Sky Corridor, as highway congestion, crashes and closures increase in frequency.”

Valeriote said he will continue to advocate to

all levels of government to apply pressure to quicken the process.

‘WORRYING’ Squamish Coun. Eric Andersen, who has been passionate about this topic and has been attending meetings of the BC Rail Corridor Alliance, a group made up of representatives of local governments, First Nations and railway businesses along the corridor between North Vancouver and Prince George, also welcomed the province’s announcement, with caveats.

“In regular meetings of corridor local government, First Nations and business representatives, frustration is being voiced about ongoing uncertainties and potentially lengthy delays in resolving the fate of the rail line and addressing opportunities for short line operators to offer freight service and for tourist passenger services,” Andersen said.

“Advice from the provincial ministry that the next steps of the process currently in CN hands could take a while is worrying,” he said. “There is real concern about rail maintenance over the near term. If investment in maintenance isn’t maintained, the line could degrade very quickly.”

Andersen also said that the minister’s assertion that the rail line hasn’t been used since 2020 isn’t “quite true.”

100 Mile House forest industry mills, which have since closed, were operating as rail shippers well after 2020, “yet could not obtain sufficient access to rail cars affecting their transportation options and costs,” according to Andersen.

“During the 2021 atmospheric river weather events which affected the CN rail line, the former BC Rail line was used as a back-up rail corridor,” he said.

“Since 2020, although less so recently, the former BC Rail has been used for shipping empty rail cars north. This use of our rail line alleviates congestion at vulnerable Lower Mainland choke points, such as the Second Narrow Rail Crossing.”

Trudy Klassen, a City of Prince George councillor and liaison for the BC Rail Corridor Alliance, said the original decision to operate a Class 1 railway on this line was not wise.

“The line was never built for long trains, it was built for passenger and short-line rail,” she said.

“The line is an engineering marvel, and reflects the glory of the landscape it winds through. Let it once again serve the incredibly beautiful region and communities of the BC Rail Corridor,” she said.

The province’s announcement is welcome, she said, but not enough.

“We are directly impacted each day by the lack of passenger and freight rail, so for us, the urgency for a return of passenger and freight traffic along this line is great,” she said.

“A common question at our meetings with communities has been, ‘Where is the government consultation?’ Our group has not waited for that. Instead, we have built an informal group of mayors and chiefs along the corridor,” Klassen said.

“Interested operators are prepared to operate on the line, both for passenger rail and short-line freight. Training of new local hires can begin once contracts are in place. Business development can begin in earnest once contracts are in place. Therefore, I urge governments at all levels to begin working on a transition now.”

quamish council members are throwing their support behind two former mayors who have penned concerns related to Woodfibre LNG and associated government regulation in a joint letter.

Former mayors Patricia Heintzman and Karen Elliott wrote to provincial leaders on May 28 expressing concern about “a number of recent issues” regarding Woodfibre LNG. This letter was copied to council and attached to the July 7 council agenda.

The issues raised in the letter included FortisBC’s non-compliance on water discharge from its tunnel, BC Hydro’s changed powerline plans that now see the transmission line route through backyards in Brackendale, a lack of an independent assessment on the health impacts of the oil and gas sector, and, the recent statement by federal Minister Tim Hodgson that WLNG

This statement came “despite years of denial of any expansion plans by the proponents and senior orders of government,” the letter states.

Both former mayors also expressed concerns about the project throughout their tenures at Municipal Hall.

“We have a unique perspective of its evolution, and a front row seat to the commitments made to Squamish by the proponent and the various ministers who oversaw the Environmental Assessment of the Woodfibre LNG and the (Eagle MountainWoodfibre Gas Pipeline) projects. We have both resisted commenting during the construction phase of the project, however, in light of these recent developments, we felt compelled to jointly voice our deep concern,” the letter reads.

“Our underlying hope is that this letter serves as a reminder of this project’s complicated and often divisive history in our community, and a harbinger of the need for senior orders of government to rebuild the public’s trust in the institutions intended to protect our economic, environmental and social interests. This includes fulsome and transparent environmental assessment and approval processes that don’t backtrack on promises or move goal posts, and that protect public assets for future generations. the letter continues.

“At a time when the social contract and trust between politicians and the citizens they purport to serve is being systematically eroded, our regulatory bodies, and the federal, provincial, municipal and First Nations governments involved in this project, need to do much better to hold the proponents to account and improve openness, transparency, and enforcement.”

Coun. Chris Pettingill said the letter aligns with his perspective.

“I think the request that the province do a much better job in terms of paying attention to cumulative impacts, to holding proponents to account for commitments and promises and assertions they make during engagement is really important because that’s the premise on which the public response and feedback is given. And if all that changes, the feedback has to be reconsidered,” he said.

He also took the opportunity to take aim at paid Woodfibre LNG advertising seen in The Squamish Chief.

“There’s a recent Woodfibre (LNG) ad in (The Squamish Chief) I’ve seen, and it’s a local family speaking about why the project is so valuable because they don’t have to go away to camp,” he said.

“And I don’t want to begrudge someone in that circumstance who’s able to stay close to home. I think that is a wonderful thing. It’s what we’re trying to do with a walkable MAYORS: Continued on 9

Stoner said there were other mechanisms by which the council could seek funds for legal counsel, and she didn’t like the idea of the funds coming from the conference budget.

he next mayor of Squamish may earn more than Mayor Armand Hurford, who revealed more than a year ago that he would not be seeking re-election.

The topic of council compensation was debated at the committee of the whole meeting on July 14.

Committee of the whole meetings are non-binding, so the decisions reached at this meeting will end up at a regular council meeting for official council consideration.

DEEPER WORK BY COUNCIL?

WHY ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT THIS NOW? The background to this discussion is that back in December, council voted to reduce the annual council contingency budget by $4,000 and to use that money to fund a council remuneration policy review of $15,000 to $20,000, budgeted every four years, aligned with the election cycle.

The next local government election is set for Oct. 17.

Following that December decision, Vancouver firm Western Compensation & Benefits Consultants did the review.

Looking at 11 municipalities, the study found council salaries are slightly below the average.

The average yearly salary for a mayor was found to be about $116,500, while in Squamish the mayor is paid $106,000. The average municipal councillor made $45,500, while in Squamish councillors are paid just under $45,000.

In other communities, acting mayors are given cash compensation. On average, that totals $2,500 per month of holding the acting mayor position.

Councillors typically rotate through the role of being acting mayor to chair meetings and attend events when the mayor is unable to.

In the compared municipalities, annual increases in council pay are tied to the consumer price index.

In Squamish, annual increases for council equal the annual increases for exempt employees (non-unionized), which includes the consumer price index as part of the formula.

Notably, the staff memo on the report notes that the District provides and pays 100 per cent of the premiums for extended health, dental, life insurance, and accident insurance. While 90 per cent of studied municipalities provide extended health and dental benefits, only 70 per cent provide basic life insurance and only 50 per cent provide accident insurance.

COUNCIL COMMENTS Coun. John French, who has made it clear he is running for re-election, expressed the

discomfort likely shared by all on council who have to publicly discuss the wages of those who may, in future, sit in their seats, including themselves.

“As a councillor intending to seek re-election, this is an uncomfortable conversation.

I’m not used to having this level of say in my own compensation,” he said.

Ultimately, council voted unanimously to support a motion put forward by Coun.

Andrew Hamilton to increase the mayor’s pay to $125,000, and adjust councillors’ remuneration to 36 per cent of that, down from the current 42.2 per cent of the mayor’s salary, effectively keeping councillor pay the same as it is currently.

“I’ve done a deep dive into the statement of financial information reports from all communities with a population of greater than 5,000,” Hamilton said. He added that he put together a data analysis website at www. bcmunicipaldata.org, where the public can check the remuneration for councils and mayors throughout 50-odd communities.

Council also voted to support a motion by Mayor Armand Hurford to have staff bring back a proposal to have up to $2,000 annually available to council members as an allowable expense for legal costs under the council conference and expense budget.

“I positioned this as an allowable cost so that it wasn’t about the taxpayers of Squamish incurring an additional expense,” Hurford said.

Coun. Lauren Greenlaw agreed.

“I would have enjoyed my time as a councillor more and felt more productive if it was more of a committee-approached role—but that’s a whole other kettle of fish—and that would be more time,” she said.

FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME? Key to his motion to raise the mayor’s salary in relation to councillors, Hamilton reflected on the role of councillor and whether it can be considered full-time or part-time.

For him, it is part-time.

“I have been able to manage this role to about two days a week, I would say, by being very focused when we come to council,” he said. “This is the primary piece of my role—thinking about the questions and responding and giving feedback on recommendations and being very selective in my other duties—the additional engagement duties outside the role.”

Greenlaw concurred that for her it is a two-day-a-week role.

“That’s how I balance it with the other aspects in my life,” she said.

She also noted that at higher levels of government, elected officials make significantly more. She and other councillors also noted that having it be more of a well-paid, fuller-time position might increase the diversity of candidates for the seats.

Hamilton stated that the mayor’s role is full-time, given the responsibilities in

But what that advertising conveniently ignores is the opportunity for that family and a handful of others like them to do that reliant on 1,900 plus other people being away from their community in a camp,” he said, adding he would like to see the provincial government require “accurate and wholesome information.”

Coun. Lauren Greenlaw said she was considering engaging with the professional oversight body Engineers and Geoscientists BC over what she called a lack of regulatory oversight. She referenced the BC Energy Regulator (BCER) which last week approved FortisBC’s request for a permit amendment to allow them to release more water discharge into Howe Sound.

Coun. Jenna Stoner said she appreciated the mayors’ letter as part of the public record.

“I think it’s an important piece of the record mostly from an institutional and community ... meandering history that this project has had in our community,” she said. “And it reminds us of the important call of the role of senior orders of government in the trust that the public really does need to hold in the

Squamish, and should reflect that. Thus, he later proposed the motion for the increase.

His colleagues ultimately agreed.

“I’m not concerned that much about where my pay is,” said Greenlaw. “But I do feel like being a mayor is a really difficult job. I feel like you’re kind of always on call. For the pay that we have now for a mayor, I think that could go up,” she said prior to the final vote.

LIVING WAGE? Hurford, who had floated a motion that would have meant a bump in councillor pay that wasn’t supported by his colleagues, said he would like councillors to earn the current living wage, according to the Living Wage Report.

That would put Squamish councillors at close to $51,000, per year.

“I think that getting to that point might unlock the ability for a wider range of our community just to see that they could potentially take on this role and be compensated that way.”

Hurford also noted that a mayor gets an office to work out of, but councillors don’t.

He asked if the issue of home offices could be considered by District staff as part of future updates to the policy.

“At the moment, your policy does not include expenses and other things to that effect. But it is something absolutely that we could take a look at,” said the District’s Julie Wengi, general manager of corporate services.

Coun. Chris Pettingill spoke mostly to the issues outside of direct salary that impact councillors, such as helping councillors with legal concerns, and the conference budget.

He spoke to potential issues that councillors face, including individual defamation or

institutions and how that is being eroded. So I think I will further work with Coun. Greenlaw on opportunities to either engage the regulatory bodies and/or the professional associations to see where there’s further effort to either build relationships and or trust.”

Stoner also said she would like to invite BCER representatives back to Squamish to explain their role and answer questions.

Mayor Armand Hurford echoed his colleagues.

“One line, ‘the conclusion was a significant lack of confidence in the provincial regulatory bodies tasked with monitoring the project,’” he said, quoting the letter.

“I think that sums up a lot of the experiences that we’ve had ... that we’re having currently. And I think that there’s a tremendous amount of room to do better. And I think that’s a fair expectation. And I think that’s a lot of what our advocacy and our asks have been and continue to be.”

The Squamish Chief has reached out to the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions for comment on the former mayors’ letter, however they were unable to meet our press deadline or provide an estimated day they could meet it.

In terms of conferences, he said perhaps for conventions like the Union of BC Municipalities, Lower Mainland Local Government Association and the Annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities, councillors should have a separate fund, given they are important for elected officials to attend.

“With the amount of downloading (from other levels of government) and other issues and interaction with upper levels of government, it does to me seem like a pretty important piece,” he said.

Stoner said she would support a future conversation around pay for committee participation.

“There might be a future conversation of a council, if that’s the direction they want to go, to actually remunerate folks for committee attendance so it’s a bit more of a level playing field, not just for councillors who are there but others who are volunteering their time to participate on committees,” she said. She noted though, that for sitting on the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) board, there is a stipend directors receive.

“While some of us spend more time on council work, I do want to recognize that I feel adequately compensated for the time, for example, that I’m dedicating to the regional district and I wouldn’t want to inflate council salary simply to accommodate some of those ones that are already remunerated for elsewhere,” she said.

In my ideal world, there would be a system where the provincial government would have some kind of provincewide system for determining the compensation of local elected officials across the province.

“It doesn’t exist and, alas, they are pulling funding for health facilities and housing for people who can’t afford market rents, so clearly, this is not a priority for our provincial government when they’re not even covering those higher priority items.”

quamish Search and Rescue (SAR) responded to a callout for a stranded BASE jumper from Slhanay Mountain on Monday, July 13.

Squamish SAR member Christy Allan told The Squamish Chief the call came in after two previous responses on the same day.

“A late-night callout after two other calls yesterday had our team working high above Valleycliffe as a small team of rope rescue technicians was inserted by helicopter onto the Slhanay to rescue a stranded BASE jumper,” she wrote.

A crew of 25 members responded, plus mutual aid volunteers from North Shore Rescue, she said.

“Using a helicopter hoist, North Shore Rescue inserted our technicians into steep terrain where they along with a team that hiked up were able to safely reach the subject, build a technical rope rescue system, and lower them to a location

where they could be extracted.”

The helicopter was spotted near the Stawamus Chief around 10:30 p.m. that night by nearby residents who contacted The Squamish Chief.

The rescue was complete by 2:30 a.m., and Squamish SAR says the stranded jumper was kept safe thanks to a friend on the scene who secured their parachute, aiding their safety as rescue crews worked to reach them.

Squamish BASE jumper Zach Mayne was the friend who helped.

“Having experienced being stranded on that mountain myself, I know better than most what it feels like to be alone up there as the sun starts to set. Because of that, I wanted to get to her as quickly as I could,” he said in a statement to The Squamish Chief.

In November, 2025, Mayne was rescued by Squamish SAR after his jump went sideways.

“Once I reached her, my priority was making sure she was safe. I secured her to myself, eventually took her full weight, and was able to get a rope attached to her harness so we could begin getting her to safety. I’m incredibly grateful that the situation ended without serious injury,” he said.

Mayne added that Mark Sky helped him navigate the woods and build his anchor during the rescue.

Allan said the subject luckily walked away with “only minor scratches” and didn’t need further medical aid.

“Many Valleycliffe residents noticed the helicopter activity overnight. While it may have looked unusual from below, the operation was

unfolding exactly as planned as multiple agencies worked together to safely complete a highly technical rescue,” Allan wrote.

The location of the jump, according to Mayne, is the most frequented area for BASE jumping in Squamish. Because it is so often used, the location has been in the news of late.

“The public usually only hears about the incidents that make the news, while the vast majority of jumps happen without issue and go completely unnoticed,” he said.

He reiterated the sport is not without risk, and that all jumps require careful preparation, judgment and experience.

Mayne aims to showcase how jumps can go right from Slhanay this fall, as he is organizing a fundraising event called 22 Jumps at the same exit point.

“While the number of jumps may sound extreme from the outside, the event is being organized to demonstrate that, when approached responsibly, multiple jumps can be conducted safely while raising meaningful support for search and rescue, first responders, and veterans.”

Allen gave a shout-out to all those involved who made the rescue a success.

“A huge thank you to North Shore Rescue and the flight crew for another outstanding partnership, and to everyone involved in bringing this rescue to a safe conclusion,” she said.

The July 13 night rescue was the sixth response between Friday and Monday of that weekend, according to Allan.

he media are often criticized when we share images that might cause harm, such as the aftermath of car crashes.

We know these depictions have the potential to cause pain to those involved or their loved ones, but the belief of journalists is that this is outweighed by the accountability and public good these images do.

Context matters and is included with the images.

The devastation of a highway crash has the potential to make change, whether that is in individual drivers’ habits or in government action—like road improvements or enforcement.

This is the same for why we aim to show images of someone facing charges in court. Showing a picture of a person walking into the courthouse likely causes them and their family distress; however, crimes are not just against individuals, they are against society and our social contract that keeps us from descending into the land of the Lord of the Flies. The images show that the legal process is happening, and confirm the accused’s identity.

We don’t show people or name them until they are charged and we are sure to follow through to their conviction or acquittal to ensure a person isn’t unjustly represented.

What ethical media (should) never do is aim to humiliate for entertainment’s sake.

Yet that is what we increasingly see members of the public doing on social media.

Whether it is parents making their own children cry on camera by tricking them as part of a TikTok trend, or people deliberately filming, without context, those in the throes of addiction, it is wrong and a sad reflection of how far many people are from compassion.

Recently, a video circulated online of a naked person in the midst of a mental health crisis who had lit their bike and belongings on fire downtown.

What is the public good in posting that video?

While posting such images is one issue, the number of comments making fun of the situation was even more disturbing.

None of this is novel or unexplained. A 2025 study out of the U.K.’s University of Warwick found that “toxicity is contagious—users reading toxic posts are more likely to post their own hateful, profane or harassing content.”

This is certainly not the only situation locally where people have posted questionable images meant to shame or entertain.

We are a town that will rally to help others, to be sure. But we are also a place where humanity and ethics can be quickly forgotten for the draw of online eyes.

There’s an episode of Black Mirror called “Nosedive” that depicts a futuristic society where people lose touch with the humans around them for likes and attention online. While the show is supposed to be dystopian, it is sadly not. It seems we are already there, right here in Squamish.

-scooters: A public menace or simply death traps on two wheels?

Whatever your take (and those are the only two options I personally endorse), calls are rising for the province to step in with a standard set of rules to prevent rising cases of serious injuries and death.

A 30-year-old woman in Vancouver died on July 11 from injuries sustained after hitting a vehicle while on an electric scooter while not wearing a helmet. Also, that same weekend, police reported two e-scooters colliding in the city.

Visits to the emergency department from children injured on e-scooters have doubled in the past year, according to BC Children’s Hospital.

Nationally, e-scooter hospitalizations for all ages are up 32 per cent.

All of this has reignited the debate about whether consistent regulations are needed to clamp down on the proliferation of cheap battery-powered kick scooters currently buzzing down all manner of British Columbia streets, roadways, sidewalks, trails, parks and bike lanes, depending on where

you live.

The devices are supposed to be capped at 25 km/h speeds, though depending on the model it is possible (and in some cases easy) to get around those limiters.

B.C. is in year five of a seven-year pilot project to study “battery-powered, motorized stand-up scooters.” You read that right—a seven-year study.

The absurd timeline has drawn the ire of some municipalities, who are tired of the NDP government allowing an unregulated patchwork system of rules that vary from city to city.

Currently, around 30 municipalities, such as Squamish, Victoria and Vancouver, have voluntarily signed on to the pilot, which allows people older than 16 to e-scoot down roads designated with speed limits of 50 km/h or less. Others, though, like Burnaby, have banned the devices from major roads. And some, like Port Coquitlam, don’t allow e-scooters on any road, sidewalk, pathway or trail.

New Westminster has sponsored a resolution for September’s Union of BC Municipalities meeting, citing “uncertainty and inconsistent public information remain regarding the safety implications of their use on public highways.”

It calls on the government to wrap up its study and get on with province-wide rules. The New Democrat administration, though, seems to want to take its sweet time.

What more does the government need to know after studying e-scooters for the past five years? How will two additional years make or break that work?

Perhaps the government is worried about the public backlash in coming down too hard on e-scooters. The devices are popular. And in some people’s minds

they are preferable to vehicles due to their ease, price and lack of pollution.

But they are also clearly dangerous and in need of some sort of stricter oversight, possibly even a licensing and education regime.

That’s where the government should come in. And where this one is missing in action.

A

Squamish trail runner has secured himself as one of the top mountain athletes in North America, placing second of 364 finishers at this year’s Mount Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska, with a time of 43:54 and pace of 13:18.

The outcome makes McAuley only the second Canadian ever to place in the race, first organized in 1915 and billed as the “toughest 5K on Earth.” Held each year over the July 4 weekend, the course covers nearly 3,000 feet of elevation gain in five kilometres (3.1 miles), sending runners scrambling up a steep, rocky mountain face behind downtown Seward before they turn around and go at a break neck speed back down through loose shale.

McAuley, an Arc’teryx-sponsored athlete, has had his eyes on the race since watching the livestream as a teenager. This was his fourth time running it, and the first time he’d raced it in the rain—a condition the Squamish local was well-suited for.

“The course is notorious for slippery, muddy conditions if it rains, and I was just curious to experience that,” McAuley said. “Coming from

Squamish, where it rained so much in the winter, having a bad weather day could actually work pretty well to my advantage—and I think it did. I felt fairly relaxed going into it, honestly, and was quite excited about the gnarly conditions.”

McAuley finished just shy of his coach, David Norris of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, who won the race outright for the seventh year in a row. The pair have trained together for two years.

“He’s so dominant at Mount Marathon, it’s quite insane,” McAuley said. “It was nice this year to be less than a minute behind David, whereas other years he’s put two or three minutes into all of us.”

The last Canadian to place second was fellow Squamish athlete Nick Elson, in 2016.

“It felt special to be right up there with him, because he’s such a legend in the trail and mountain running community—and just to put Squamish on the map a little bit,” McAuley said.

“I think where we live really lends itself well to training for really rugged, hard races like this.”

While he’s seeing incredible success as a trail runner, his athletic career didn’t start here.

Growing up with two parents who worked in the outdoors sector, he raced downhill mountain bikes from about age nine or 10 until he was 18. He’s also a frequent mountaineer, ski tourer and climber, which he said helps him cross-train.

“I’ve got a lot of my background as a downhill mountain bike racer (makes me) comfortable choosing lines,” he said. “Those skills have

transferred over to more technical trail running really well. A lot of it is also just leg strength.

You’re pushing as hard as you can for 30 to 35 minutes on the uphill, and then you basically just immediately turn around and slam your legs downhill as fast as you can.”

To manage pre-race nerves, McAuley said he keeps busy.

“The reality is, leading up to a race like that, you’ve done all the prep, so there’s not a whole lot more to stress about,” he said. “It’s good not to just sit around stressing about it, because I think that does more damage than people realize.”

McAuley signed with Arc’teryx nearly two years ago, a sponsorship he said has taken financial pressure off his racing.

“It’s hard to fund these race seasons on your own,” he said. “It definitely takes some stress off your back when you can put that same energy into training and recovering.”

His next major goal is the Trofeo Kima, a 50K race in Italy, known for its technical, high-altitude terrain, on Aug. 22.

McAuley encourages anyone curious about the sport to start with local races and work their way up, and to consider entering the Mount Marathon lottery even if it seems intimidating.

“I often tell runners that they should enter the lottery and sign up for it, even if it’s not their type of race, just because it is such a unique experience,” he said. “I think a lot of people would surprise themselves—and it’s good to challenge yourself that way sometimes.”

Squamish’s two Kevins, Schellenberg and Smillie, were recently inducted into the 2026 BC Softball Hall of Fame with their team, the 2007 Vancouver Grey Sox. The team was honoured at a ceremony in Surrey on July 10 at Softball City.

The Vancouver Grey Sox Senior Men’s Fastpitch Softball Club, specifically the 2007 Championship team, was recognized for winning gold at the Canadian Championship that year, the first time a Vancouver-based team had won the Nationals in 41 years.

“The 2007 Vancouver Grey Sox demonstrated peak excellence in Canadian softball, achieving a historic national title for Vancouver and showcasing B.C. talent on a national stage,” reads the Softball BC website.

On Sept. 2, 2007, the final championship match, with the team under immense pressure, the Grey Sox defeated the host Roebothan McKay Marshall club of Newfoundland 1-0.

The game was played in front of a hostile crowd of 6,000 spectators.

Smillie and Schellenberg both said it was amazing to be honoured at the recent ceremony, which took place during the 2026 Canada Cup International Softball Championship.

“I was lucky enough to be a part of obviously a group of amazing players. Some of the best in the world,” said Smillie, who was 19 years old at the time of the championship game, while Schellenberg was 26. “It was just an amazing experience and getting the group back together felt like we’d been together the whole time.”

Schellenberg, who has had a very storied softball career, was inducted in 2024 as an individual, recognizing his success on the provincial, national and international level.

The 2007 game stands out among it all for him though.

“Pretty much as tense as you can get for a gold medal final in a national championship,” he said.

Schellenberg had played for the Grey Sox for five years previous to 2007, but had left the team to join another team in Wisconsin, in the U.S. “But the whole time we had a plan that I was going to come back and play for them at the national championship. So it was really special for me because it was very hard to leave the team that I grew up playing with

and helped carve a big chunk of my career out, but also very rewarding to come back and win it with that team,” he said.

The two infielders weren’t the only Squamish locals on the team.

The Grey Sox field manager was local John Stuart, as were players Craig Halliday and Calem Gardner.

“At that time, the sport was thriving,” Schellenberg said. “And even in Squamish, we had an eight-team local league … It brought out athletes in the community. They wanted to come play. So, we had younger guys like Kevin (Smillie) coming up behind me that were really hungry to play and were part of good teams locally. So we kind of moulded our skills here in Squamish and there was enough talent that Vancouver Grey Sox noticed and said, ‘Hey, come join our team.’”

WEARING NEW BUSINESS ‘SOX’ The pair is now teaming up at Northyards Sports Lab, the new indoor athletes’ training space in the Business Park.

Smillie is one of the owners of the training centre, while Schellenberg is one of the elite

athletes and coaches being brought in to train youth and adult athletes.

“I’ll also be doing some hitting instruction, whether it’s for baseball or softball,” said Schellenberg.

“I’m more geared towards softball but I grew up playing baseball as well. So whether it’s baseball or softball we can offer defensive and offensive skills sessions for both categories. Given my background growing up in Squamish playing baseball and softball, I think it’s only right that I’m able to give some of that knowledge back that I’ve learned through the years.”

Other trainers include, among others, veteran hockey coach Mike Borrelli and baseball player and coach Jeremy Galley.

The space soft-opened July 14, with a grand opening planned for later this summer.

Both the 2007 championship team and the Northyards Sports Lab have a similar theme: “It just goes to show, if you put in the work that good things can happen. No matter where you’re from, how big you are, how small you are, if you want it and you put in the work, you’ll be rewarded,” said Schellenberg.

Given my background growing up in Squamish playing baseball and softball, I think it’s only right that I’m able to give some of that knowledge back that I’ve learned through the years.

DAVE BANBURY July 7th, 2026

Dave Banbury passed away peacefully at Squamish Hospice, after losing his battle with leukemia on July 7th, 2026. He is survived by his wife Lynne, daughters Nichole, Alisha and Courtney. Grandchildren Akasha and Jaxson, and beloved dog Max. He is also survived by a brother and sister along with many nieces, nephews, sister in laws and brother in-laws.

On July 8, 2026, after a rapid, painful two-week decline, you slipped away.

Your loyal Labrador tried to wake you with gentle licks, then curled up on the hospital bed beside you, as if offering the first goodbye.

We will gather on Sunday, August 9 at Bob Milburn's home between 1:00 – 5:00 pm, a celebration of your life -with playful popsicle building and object stress testing, and raise a glass of 'sarsaparilla' as we say goodbye.

Dave was born in Vancouver and moved to Squamish in 1983. He was highly active throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor and was a member of several clubs. He was a longtime member of the Squamish Valley Rod and Gun Club and was a regular on the trap range. He was also a member of the Whistler Weasel Workers and enjoyed travelling to help set up different ski races. He kept horses in Squamish for many years and loved it so much he started working as a Ferrier. Previously, Dave was the Superintendent of Squamish Valley Golf Course, and was often found swinging a golf club or curling in the winter months.

Outside of clubs, he loved to fish, tie flies, ATV and socialize— usually over a crib board Special thanks to Dr. Jamieson and Squamish Hospital/Hospice for their wonderful care. The family would like to extend their gratitude to sister in laws Judy (always being there) and Sue (giving Dave his last haircut). Many thanks to all our friends, especially Walter and Orene. Also, a thank you to the Squamish Valley Gun Club for their great write up of Dave.

T

he Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival is more than just a community event—for some it’s more like a lifelong religion, its pageantry and rituals deeply embedded in their psyche as a pastime that reaches from one generation to the next.

For Mayor Armand Hurford, the festival features in some of his earliest memories.

“I grew up with loggers sports. My father had been involved since before I was around. When I was growing up, working on whatever it was that needed working on, I thought that was what everyone did after school or on weekends with their family because that’s what consumed a lot of my childhood,” he told The Squamish Chief.

Hurford was featured on the cover of the May 18, 1980, issue of The Province holding a toy chainsaw while his father wielded the real thing at Hyack Festival in New Westminster. He wasn’t yet three years old in the photo, but he was already deeply engaged in the culture.

“As I grew older, I realized we were building community but also serving it as well. I travelled around every weekend to different loggers sports events around the province, and it’s just what we did.”

It taught him that “you can come together and really achieve something collectively that individuals or an individual organization can’t do on their own.”

“Some of my earliest memories are of logger sports, working with my father and grandfather on the construction of the current Squamish Days facility as well as travelling to shows all over and eventually competing myself. Many years ago I moved into the announcer role and enjoy guiding the audience along on the wild ride that is Squamish Days Loggers Sports," he said.

He’s been doing announcing for more than a decade.

His favourite event is probably the choker race, "I also love log-rolling, which was my specialty back when I was competing. With the choker race, it shows that you have to persevere. It’s a relatively short period of time, but you can actually mess up and keep fighting and make a comeback. Plus, of course, everyone likes seeing people get wet."

One of Hurford’s fondest memories is from the PNE in Vancouver, where he would log-roll alongside long-time friend Stirling Hart as part of the event’s grand finale. The duo performed together for three years. The show involved dance numbers and pyrotechnics, making it a huge spectacle.

Hart remembers those shows fondly.

“Some nights Armand would win, some nights I would win. The theme was a city girl moving out to the country, and the winner of the log-roll got the girl. We did that 17 nights at the end of the summer, as part of this fireworks show,” he said.

There’s no safety net, there’s no way of stopping you from falling 80 feet all the way to the ground.

Hart honed his skills alongside Hurford at the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival, but has since travelled abroad to compete. He still feels the local show holds its own.

“I travel all over the world, and I think the show put on here for Squamish Days is the best run and best production of anywhere in the world. I can still remember 5,000 people all cheering at once for what you’re doing. It’s a pretty cool feeling,” he said.

“I’ve been coming to this show since I was born, really. My dad used to compete and was a big part of the show, so I’ve been involved for my entire life and it’s really the benchmark of my

summer. Everything leads up to it and then away from it. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re following in your father’s footsteps.”

He first competed at the age of four, graduating to the adult categories when he was approximately 11. He quickly gained a reputation as a tree-climber.

“Then one year I put a little more training in, and it kind of surprised me because that’s where I won my first world championship, in Squamish. I didn’t really know I had a chance to win. There was a guy named Wade Stewart and he’d been champion for a long time, and another guy that now lives in Squamish named Brian Bartow,” he said.

“You have to climb the trees both days. So, on the Saturday, I did the climb, and then those two raced each other and when we saw the times at the end of the day I was in the lead. I was not expecting that at all. Then the next day nobody went faster than my first-day climb. It was a big shock for me but it was very cool because when I hit the ground my dad was the first one there.”

It made him believe “anything is possible, anybody is beatable.”

According to Hart, the tree-climb is a daredevil sport.

“There’s no safety net, there’s no way of stopping you from falling 80 feet all the way to the ground. I think the danger is part of the rush of it. When you’re at the bottom you’re nervous because you’re about to compete, but you’re also nervous for your life a bit. That’s a different kind of nerves. It’s the biggest adrenaline rush I’ve had in my life.”

He’s found that loggers sports is a kind of universal language worldwide.

“I’ve been to pretty much every single country in western Europe, as far over as Poland and Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and loggers sports have taken me to all these places.

We used to go around and do demos, and even in places where the guys don’t speak the same language, the physical act of the sport is entertaining to anybody, no matter what language they speak. That’s what’s enabled it to be a worldwide sport.”

He will be competing this year from July 30 to Aug. 2, for the 69th iteration of the event.

“It’s amazing to know we have one of the best shows in the world right here in our backyard and everywhere I go to compete, I push that. We invite people from all over the world and that’s what’s enabled it to keep growing.”

50-year tradition won’t be broken.

The Squamish Rotary Club’s (SRC) annual beef on a bun is back at Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival this year, despite not being issued a permit for an open fire.

Each year, the SRC serves up 680 kilograms

(1,500 pounds), or around 3,000 delicious sandwiches, to hungry attendees at Loggers Sports on Saturday and Sunday at the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds.

et set for chili cook-offs, bed racing through the streets, and sitting on the edge of your seat, as loggers from far and wide show off their speedy skills in a sporting show.

Indeed, a very niche, and a very typical Squamish event celebrating the town’s logging roots, which this British reporter was totally unfamiliar with up until last year.

We are of course talking about the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival, returning July 30 to Aug. 2 this year with all its traditional fun and games; from a cook-off at the Squamish Valley Golf Course, to scrambling up to 80-feet on wooden poles at the Al McIntosh Sports Grounds (39155 Loggers Lane).

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY The annual festival has been a strong tradition in Squamish since 1957, back when the creation of infrastructure was heavily dependent on local loggers felling trees and creating roads. Travel to Squamish by boat was common (the Sea to Sky highway didn’t open as a gravel road until the following year). These loggers (including Al McIntosh) got together to showcase their skills in a one day event; who could saw and chop the fastest etc.

“What started as a grassroots gathering quickly became a hometown highlight,” the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival website notes.

“The earliest contests were held behind the Elks Hall and featured classic loggers sports like axe throw, tree climb, underhand chop, and birling (log-rolling)—all raw demonstrations of the craft that defined Squamish. From those humble beginnings, the festival would grow into a beloved community tradition that still rings with that same spirit nearly 70 years later.”

and dressing up in costume, street parades and food events, such as the Lumberjack chili-cook off, and a street pancake breakfast. The weekend sporting shows themselves include one for novices and intermediates, and one for world champions. There’s axe throwing, bucking and felling races to name only a few of the events.

EVERYONE STARTS SOMEWHERE No matter your level; whether you’re a novice, athlete, or you’ve never picked up a saw in your life, Squamish Days hosts a training club for folks who are interested in learning or honing their current skills.

The Timber Training Club (at the Al McIntosh sports grounds) is open to all adults aged 17 and over. Squamish Days coaches and board directors teach you how to axe throw, solo and double buck (saw a log with a team-mate), and run a choker race (carrying heavy gear).

This Squamish Chief reporter, who has very little experience in handling axes and saws in any way, went along for an evening training session on April 29 to see just how much of a good sport they could be.

Squamish Days board director, coach, and logger competitor Meghan Hall met with this reporter to show them the ropes, or more specifically, the axes and saws.

Hall firstly guided some axe throwing, explaining that you need to keep 20-feet away from the target, so as not to risk the axe literally bouncing back onto you. The bullseye is worth five points, then points decrease to one the further away you hit from it.

Let me tell you, that axe is heavier than it looks, and it takes a lot of strength to hurl it over your head. It also—to this reporter—felt very anti-instinctual to throw a blunt (according to Hall) weapon that had the ability to bounce back.

Unfortunately this reporter didn’t hit the target after multiple attempts, but Hall said this isn’t uncommon when one is starting out.

Hall’s experience as a competitive loggers sports athlete spans around 10 years, with 10 to 13 competitions per year.

“I’m doing it until I can’t pick up an axe anymore,” she said.

Next up, was the double buck. The trick was to squat and keep your feet further apart than you might expect. Once you fell into a rhythm with your teammate, it started to feel easier.

In both events, you had to keep your hands close together, and this reporter—being left-handed—had to hold them the opposite way to the coaches.

The Squamish Chief also watched the competitors practicing underhand chops, for which you need to carve a flat surface on the wooden block you stand on, before racing to chop it in half.

DIVERSITY The Squamish Chief spoke with competitors at the club who all had various levels of experience; they expressed gratitude about the acceptance and warmth of the Squamish logging community, and what inspired them to join.

So what is birling, anyway?

To long-time Squamish residents, Squamish Days Loggers Sports is an annual milestone, a chance to see event favourites from years past return to take on a new, up-and-coming echelon of young athletes.

To those new to the area or the event, however, Loggers Sports can be quite intimidating. What, for example, is birling? Or obstacle pole bucking? Or a springboard chop?

To help those unfamiliar with the sports, we present a look at what all these buzzwords—for lack of a better expression—really mean, with illustrations courtesy of Squamish artist Lorne Lariviere.

AXE-THROWING

Well, this event is pretty self-explanatory.

The contestants throw a double-bladed axe at a 36-inch target five feet off the ground.

Bull-eyes are worth five: the remaining four rings decrease in value to one, and any part of the axe sticking in the target counts, as long as it holds. Pretty simple, eh?

CHOKERMAN’S RACE

Two contestants carrying rigging chokers (a securing cable) run across logs secured in the birling pond, reaching the other side, jumping over two log obstacles setting the choke on the third log and turning back across the birling pond to the starting line. Don’t be surprised to see a few contestants taking an unexpected dip in the birling pond!

LOGGER TRAINING: Continued from B5 since she was a child, she said, inspired her love for the sport. She started at the age of 13 with her younger sister who was 11 at that time.

Squamish Days board director and coach Matt Little said he joined the Timber Training Club four and a half years ago, and was trained by Hall.

“I travel around doing shows around B.C. all summer (but) Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival is by far my favourite show,” he said.

“You get the best crowd. Home shows are always fun. My wife signed me up and said I had to go and do the intro course, so I did, and it became an unexpected passion.

“I’m jealous of people who are multi-generational competitors. I wish I’d found it in my 20s, but you take what you can get. I’m happy to be here for sure.”

Squamish Days coach Nick Hall, originally from Ontario, said he has been competing for about 20 years, and training preparation for the Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival typically starts up in spring.

He said he is particularly looking forward to the butcher block event this year (chopping a vertically mounted block).

“I moved out west, because it’s so much easier with so many more competitions out here,” he said.

“I moved to Squamish specifically because it’s such a great community that revolves around the logging industry.

Nick explained that “a huge range” of people attend the club, and a lot of first timers realize it’s harder work than they anticipate, though, he said,

BEEF ON A BUN: Continued from B4 annual fire ban in the District of Squamish, the fire department usually gave the go-ahead and issues a temporary permit. That is no longer the case this year.

After learning about the official change, the club experimented this spring with a new method for cooking their offering, and Tony Adamson, SRC president, says that they’ve come up with a meal that may be made differently but tastes like tradition.

“We got feedback from everybody. It was mostly positive, but that’s kind of the way it is.

Even when we did the barbecue at Loggers Sports every year, not everybody is going to be happy with the product, but by and large, everybody was. I ate and tested it myself. Quite honestly, I couldn’t really tell the difference from how we’ve done it in the past, so I was pretty pleased with it,” he said.

As for the District, spokesperson Christina Moore told The Squamish Chief that historically, a high-risk exemption permit has been issued to the Rotary Club for the event.

However, in recognition of the growing fire risk, Squamish Fire Rescue has had numerous discussions with the event organizers, dating back to June 2024, regarding the risk posed by open fires, she said.

“Exemption permits continued to be issued for the 2024 and 2025 events; however, the Squamish Dryden Creek wildfire, the devastating losses other communities have suffered due to wildfire, and the increasing amount of local and provincial resources being required to

Following these events, the fire department reviewed and strengthened fire restriction rules for events to protect public safety and reduce any possibility of wildfire risk, Moore said.

“To provide as much time as possible for adaptation, it was communicated to the organizers in fall 2025 that a permit would no longer be provided,” Moore added.

“We absolutely understand that this is a long-running, favourite community event, however, as fire risk continues to rise across the region, we can no longer accept the risk of an open wood-burning fire at this or any event in the community during a fire ban.

“We have been advised that the Rotary Club has been trialling an alternative, safer way to offer the much-loved beef on a bun and hope the community can appreciate and understand the rationale for the decision.”

Running from July 30 to Aug. 2, Squamish Days honours the rough-and-tumble history of logging sports in Squamish, offering viewers an incredible spectacle of chainsaw mastery and tall tree climbs.

But the beef? That’s part of the show, too.

“These … outside round roasts have been the star of the show (second only to the chainsaws),” according to the Loggers Sports website.

“Beef sliced hot and piled onto soft brioche buns, these sandwiches are served exclusively at the Loggers Sports Grounds on Saturday and Sunday–and yes, they always sell out. This mouth-watering tradition is proudly prepared by the Rotary Club of Squamish, one of the festival’s dedicated service groups and long-time community partners.”
