HOW WHITE ROCK’S BEACH WHEELCHAIR PILOT COULD WORK HERE

A successful pilot program in White Rock is providing a potential model for Squamish to make its sandy beaches accessible to people with mobility challenges JENNIFER THUNCHER

ost would agree that Sp’akw’us Feather Park has become a jewel among the many draws to Squamish.

It is a place folks of all ages and abilities can enjoy, which is not the case for many of our more extreme treasured landscapes.

But while Feather Park is wheelchair accessible, the beach is hard to navigate.

Other waterfront locations have found a way for even more people to enjoy the ocean.

The 2026 Beach Wheelchair Pilot Program was launched in July 2026 by the City of White Rock in partnership with Naakua Paddle Boards. The program provides three beach wheelchairs that can be used along the beach,

ACCESS: Continued from 1 City of White Rock Mayor Megan Knight told The Squamish Chief that the biggest advantage of the 2026 Beach Wheelchair Pilot Program is that it helps remove barriers. “Something as simple as getting down to the beach can be difficult for someone with mobility challenges, and these chairs help make those experiences more accessible,” she said, in an emailed statement. “There are practical considerations, such as storage, maintenance, and ensuring the equipment is available when people want to use it, but those are all manageable.”

‘IT’S IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY’ Like Squamish these days, access to the ocean is a big draw in White Rock.

“One of the things that makes White Rock special is our beach, and it’s important that everyone has the opportunity to experience it,” Knight said. “We have been testing the program and receiving encouraging feedback.”

Wheelchair user Susan Bains, who is also a White Rock city councillor, spoke to The Squamish Chief wearing her advocate’s hat.

She is president of Equal Access Collective, which promotes accessibility all throughout the Lower Mainland.

She was involved in bringing the beach wheelchair program to fruition in White Rock.

She said the biggest challenge of getting the program up and running was finding an organization that could partner with the city and manage the program.

In White Rock, that ended up being Naakua Paddle Boards.

People rent the chairs from there.

Bains started pushing for the program after an exchange with another local wheelchair user at the beach. Bains had her own, personal floating chair, which the fellow admired.

“I went down to the beach in my wheelchair with my husband and my daughter. When I came back up from the beach, this resident,

also a wheelchair user, he just zoomed over to me and he was like, ‘Where did you get that?

Could I get it or could I rent that here?’ My heart sank because I knew … it could be, right? But I said, ‘No, unfortunately, this is my own personal one.’”

When the pilot program launched this summer, the fellow was there, excited to give the chairs a try.

‘I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW EASY IT WAS’ Karyn Thompson and her family live just minutes from the beach but hadn’t been on it in years. Her 12-year-old son, Wesley Hodson, uses a wheelchair and because he couldn’t get down to the beach, the family didn’t feel right going without him.

When he was little, they could pull him in a wagon, but as he grew, “it’s just been impossible,” Thompson said.

She said the family looked into buying their own beach wheelchair, but they are prohibitively expensive.

When the family heard about the rental program at White Rock, they were all excited and headed down.

“I could not believe how easy it was. Clearly the people that set us up with the rental place, they have people with disabilities in mind doing this,” she said, adding the chairs are really secure. She felt her son was very safe in it.

The family had a great time.

“We could have been out there for hours. He got to play in the waves and he was so happy about it. … I didn’t realize how much I missed it.”

The family will definitely be back to rent the beach chair again.

While the pilot ends in September, Thompson said were the program to run through the fall and winter, she can imagine her family going to the beach then too.

“Not to the water, but just along the beach there. Like most people from B.C., like we’re out all year.”

going into the water and a chair or two, that’s going to bring tourism. It’s going to bring the people—even locals—that couldn’t once.”

The District of Squamish is open to the idea.

“Accessible beach wheelchairs at Sp’akw’us Feather Park is an interesting idea that could be brought forward to the accessibility committee for discussion as they work to improve accessibility across Squamish,” said District spokesperson Steven Hill. “The committee meets regularly and makes recommendations to the District for consideration for future budgets and initiatives.”

Hill noted the committee is always open to public feedback and suggestions, which can be directed to accessibility@squamish.ca.

WALK N’ ROLL EVENT ‘LOOKING FOR THINGS TO DO’ In terms of Squamish, Thompson and her family had visited recently. With her son being palliative, Canuck Place had invited them to Britannia Mine Museum for a visit. They stayed in Squamish overnight and went to the Sea to Sky Gondola and Sp’akw’us Feather Park.

“If there was a beach wheelchair park, we would have gone, 100 per cent, because we were up there looking for things to do,” she said, noting the family found there weren’t a lot of options for folks who use wheelchairs.

“I think that it is exactly what Squamish needs.”

Asked what Bains would tell the District, she pointed to the advantage of being a place that is truly accessible to all.

“You are bringing people to your city and amenities and public spaces that currently are not able to, right? There’s barriers in the (District), and I think that’s important to note,” she said. “There’s barriers that are not allowing people to enjoy this public beach, public space.

Speaking of an accessible community, the annual Walk n’ Roll event is returning Saturday, Sept. 19 to downtown Squamish (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.). This event celebrates people with disabilities while providing a chance to learn more about accessibility in Squamish.

The event is put on by the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association, District of Squamish, Tourism Squamish, the Squamish Public Library, Squamish Arts, and the Rotary Club.

The event involves a self-guided loop through downtown. Participants can stop at many local businesses and organizations to learn about accessibility. There will be interactive activities, demonstrations, information booths, among other things. Walk and rollers will get a map to collect stamps at each stop for a chance to win prizes. Local accessibility organizations will also be on site showcasing accessible recreation, transportation and community resources, according to a news release about the event.

This year’s Walk n’ Roll is in memory of the late D’Arcy McCrea. McCrea, who died in 2025, was a passionate accessibility advocate. He organized the last Walk n’ Roll event in 2023.

ver wonder what is actually going on over at the Woodfibre LNG site?

We did.

The Squamish Chief requested to see the site over the years, and after one failed attempt (due to an atmospheric river event) back in October, was given access via a media tour on Aug. 7.

The tour came the same day Reuters reported that Ratnesh Bedi, the president of Pacific Energy, the company that owns 70 per cent of Woodfibre LNG (Enbridge owns a 30 per cent stake), said the company was fielding calls from Middle East buyers regarding the Squamish facility’s future 2.1 million tonnes per year of LNG, though it has already been pre-sold to oil and gas company BP. Departing from Darrell Bay and crossing 6.2 km over Howe Sound by small passenger vessel to the site, The Squamish Chief first arrived and boarded the MV Isabelle X, one of two repurposed cruise ships that serve as workers’ accommodation during construction of the project.

The MV Isabelle X, built in 1989, is a 169.4-metre-long, 28.2-metre-wide, 35,000-gross-tonne vessel.

The two ships currently house approximately 1,300 crew working on the site.

WOODFIBRE LNG: Continued from 3 The tour started at the personnel transfer deck—which was previously the vessel’s car deck— where there is a security station, worker lockers, and transfer areas for crew baggage.

Construction crew onboard work 12 days on and seven days off, arriving and leaving by passenger vessels from Vancouver.

There are about 650 worker cabins, which The Squamish Chief did not see.

The tour included the dining room, 8,000-square-foot gym, VIP dining room, which is used for special events, a coffee shop, small convenience store, 24-hour grab-and-go mini-cafeteria and dining hall for daily catered meals served in shifts.

There is a games lounge, which includes pool tables, darts, board and video games, and an arcade room.

There are also meeting rooms and offices occupied by various crew, and what must have been a former nightclub transformed into a large meeting room with video screen.

There is an outdoor lounge and separated outdoor smoking area.

After seeing the ship, the tour then followed an outdoor pathway along the very active construction site, passing over Mill Creek by bridge to where the modules are located.

The prefabricated “train” modules, constructed at the Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan (QMW) fabrication yard in China and shipped in pieces to Squamish, will be

responsible for gas pre-treatment and LNG processing.

The facility will receive, process, and liquefy natural gas, store it and transfer LNG to marine carriers for export.

The Squamish Chief climbed within the approximately 50-metre-high modules to see the inner workings of the facility and the site from above.

The newly arrived flare stack is also now constructed. It was brought in three separate pieces and linked on site. It has massive cables that tether it to the ground in concrete.

From a distance could be seen the landfill, up above the site, the area where the compressor station will be, the entrance to the tunnel—for the FortisBC Eagle Mountain - Woodfibre Gas Pipeline—which has less than a kilometre left to complete, and the area where the floating LNG storage will be.

The tour took us past several large warehouses (including what will become the central control room), as well as emergency vehicles, an emergency boat, and several barges.

While the tour was guided by Woodfibre LNG representatives, The Squamish Chief was free to speak with crew and staff along the way, though not for attribution. The only restriction in our photography was avoiding worker faces (if they weren’t part of the team guiding us), and people’s personal identification, such as phone numbers visible on bulletin boards.

ost people never try highlining in their lifetime—especially not at age 10.

Unless you’re Reagan Goodwyn, a record-setting young American climber.

She and her family of seven hiked up Squamish’s Stawamus Chief on Aug. 4 with experienced Vancouver-based highliner Maira Besic.

Aspen, 3, Anderson, 7, Emerson, 6, and Reagan, 10, come from a van life family that spends its days chasing rock. Most of that time is spent on the ground—but while in Squamish, Reagan decided it was time to fly high.

“It was definitely kind of scary at first, but then you got the feel of it, and having that exposure was definitely different than just climbing. I was kind of thinking, it’ll be fine since I’m a climber. It’s not going to be amazingly exposed, and I was proved very much wrong,” Reagan said.

Her brother Anderson agreed.

“I thought it was really crazy being so exposed because (when) I’m climbing, there’s

a rock right in front of you. You can grab onto, and like when I was highlining, there was nothing to grab onto except the highline above you, and your leash, and I just thought it was crazy.”

Their younger siblings, Aspen and Emerson, echoed the sentiment.

low, between trees in the park, or high, between cliffs, like on the Stawamus Chief.

Squamish is considered one of the best places in Canada, if not the best, to pursue the sport.

For the Goodwyn parents, who have devoted their family life to spending quality time outdoors pursuing climbing, they believe pushing past fear helps their kids mature.

“Honestly, I’ve had to get really comfortable with it. David’s always been so much more comfortable with that. He always wanted to try things growing up, and I was much more cautious,” Shelby, their mom, said.

“I think it’s just been hugely valuable to the kids to learn to trust, you know, both their selves and their strength and their ability, and to learn to trust the gear and the people who have kind of come before them and mentors,” dad Dave said.

“It’s really helped them be confident. I think in all things, you know, being able to know that when they get up on a rock or a highline, that they can push their boundaries and find that fear, and then overcome it and feel strong afterwards, and I think that’s been hugely valuable and really crosses over into so many different areas of life that it’s been a valuable skill.”

FURRY CREEK RESIDENTS DRIVE TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS AND COMMUNITY ACCESS Community involvement is contributing to Furry Creek’s growing popularity, for both residents and visitors INA PACE

urry Creek, 19 km south of Squamish, is an idyllic and loved community hot spot.

Besides the renowned golf course, this is an attractive spot for retirees and recreationists, drawn largely from Squamish, and from Vancouver.

The Squamish Chief toured the area with Furry Creek resident and former director of Squamish Access Society Brian Moorhead, who is renowned for pioneering community accessibility.

He has long helped build trails in the region.

Moorhead has also designed practical initiatives to encourage nature conservation, such as park-like signage and toilets, installed at Furry Creek in 2021.

The urine-diverting toilets (UDIs) separate liquid and solid matter.

The UDI’s, which cost around $15,000 each, serve a joint purpose, Moorhead explained. As an amenity to trail users, of course, but also in fertilizing the soil. Since urine is sterile, it goes

directly into specially prepared ground and provides nutrients to the soil. The separated fecal matter is pumped back into a separate pile where it decomposes faster.

The Furry Creek beach access trails, which provide legal access to the ocean, are one of Moorhead’s latest projects. He began laying the trails around 2015 and continued through the

LOCAL MAN CRADLES DYING BEAR’S PAW AFTER HIGHWAY 99 COLLISION After a bear yearling was hit crossing Highway 99, one Squamish man held its paw as it died. COS says it’s the latest in a string of bear-vehicle collisions this year

or Daniel Mier, rescuing a small black bear that was hit by a vehicle was the honourable thing to do.

While driving on Highway 99 in Squamish, a black bear yearling ran across the highway from the Adventure Centre, crossed the barrier and collided with a large truck.

“He was then kind of tumbled into the centre of the road and was lying there in severe pain, making a groaning kind of noise,” he said.

Mier pulled over right away and decided to step in and move the bear from further harm.

“I didn’t know whether the bear was going to react or not, as it was still alive,” he said.

‘I SAT WITH IT AND HELD ITS PAW’ After thinking for a moment, assessing the bear’s lack of reactivity, he decided to act out of honour for another living being.

“I picked up both of its paws in my hands and dragged it off to the side of the road. There’s a grassy area there, and I sat with it and held its paw, and just placed my hand on the side of its head as it went through its last minutes of life,” he said.

“It was definitely a bit traumatic in some ways, but I feel like it was my instinct, and it deserves recognition for its life not to be ended that way, in the middle of the road like that.”

Having spent time in India working at a Buddhist centre with animals and people with TB and leprosy, Mier says he gained an appreciation for all living beings.

Much of his time is spent gardening, and as an artist, he’s painted images of people’s deceased pets.

“And yeah, I have a deep connection and respect for all animals and life.”

He does not blame the truck driver, and sees the incident as a natural part of human-wildlife conflict when human development coincides with the natural world.

‘THAT’S JUST WHAT YOU DO’ Victoria Marchant was also driving on the highway when she saw Mier on the side of the road. She stepped in to make sure he was okay before realizing what had happened.

“I went, ‘Oh, his dog has just passed.’ And as I got closer, because the bear was so little, I went, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s a bear!’ And then he took the time to talk to me. It was very loud because of the traffic. But I just stayed with him, and we just kind of gave our respects to the bear. That’s just what you do. That’s what humans do,” Marchant said.

She called the Conservation Officer Service so they could pick up the deceased bear, and waited for them to arrive.

COS: ‘IT CAN BE DANGEROUS’ Sgt. Chris Doyle with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service in the Sea to Sky zone responded.

“The call we received was that a bear had been struck by a vehicle on Highway 99 near Cleveland Avenue. When we attended, we found the bear to be deceased on the side of the road, and the passerby was there with the bear,” he said.

The COS added that while Doyle didn’t speak with Mier, who had left the scene, officers generally don’t advise people to move wild animals, due to safety concerns.

“Generally speaking, people shouldn’t attempt to pick up injured wildlife. It can be dangerous for them, so if possible, wait until we arrive, or the police may arrive before us—just so we’re able to safely assess the situation and make sure nobody puts themselves at risk, whether that’s being bitten or scratched, or exposed to something that may not be healthy for them.”

“Obviously they were doing what they thought was the best thing for the bear, and that’s great.

But in general, it’s not something we would promote people to do. The other risk sometimes people face is being on a highway with other vehicles, and there’s the potential for some type of accident or incident to result from that.”

A PATTERN OF COLLISIONS THIS YEAR This isn’t the first incident he’s seen of a bear being struck this year along the Sea to Sky Highway.

“There’s been quite a few incidents this year with bears being struck by vehicles—some killed, some injured. In other cases we don’t necessarily know what happened to them.

They’re struck and then they run off. We do have a few injured bears around Squamish that may have been hit by vehicles, with broken legs. And like I said, we’ve had a few complaints where people have struck a bear and it’s run off, and we don’t know if it died later or recovered from its injuries.”

If someone does find an injured animal, they’re advised to call the COS. If the animal is deceased, it becomes the responsibility of the highway contractor to dispose of, according to Doyle.

Although much of the clearance itself is done by machinery, he said that many features, such as wooden steps, are laid by hand. Moorhead explained it can take up to 30 minutes of labour per step. The steps can last for around 15 years when taken care of.

Due to the “aging community,” Moorhead said, the SLRD issued a grant that enabled a caretaker to maintain the access trails on a weekly basis, for around six months of the year.

Beach access is via a tunnel beneath the highway before “exploiting” the adjacent Furry Creek Dike, which the main trail continues along. This way, trail users safely avoid the railroad tracks and the golf course.

Various viewpoints, Moorhead explained, he made as a “formality.” Despite also using formal signage, Moorhead is considerate to not make the trails too “formulaic,” in the hope of appealing to the broader hiking community.

“Although this is not officially a park at this time, we do hope it will become a regional park,” Moorhead said.

“In the meantime, we make it appear as a park with proper signage because this helps gain respect by the users, and it does seem to work

out quite well,” he continued, referring to the lack of or at least non-apparent litter, dog waste, and graffiti, and noting that a large portion of hikers are typically from Squamish.

When monitoring foot traffic one afternoon this month (by counting parked cars by the trailhead), he estimated around 250 people came to Furry Creek within only a few hours.

Moorhead described development in the Sea to Sky Corridor as “probably inevitable,” but that further development of Furry Creek itself is dependent on the establishment of the new firehall (to be constructed in 2027).

“The firehall is pivotal. We cannot build further (without it),” he said.

“I think the community needs to grow to a certain degree in order to encourage wider community involvement. Our hope is to keep the corridor the same high quality we already experience. We’ve created a welcoming public space for the wider community. I emphasize the wider community. I don’t want us to become a gated community.”

OVERLOOKED ROLES

W

ith the upcoming General Local Election, lots of the focus is on the District of Squamish council, which makes sense, given the power council has over our day-to-day lives. But the election on Oct. 17 is also for Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) area directors and Sea to Sky school trustees.

These roles are hugely important, but often overlooked, so much so that they have often been filled by acclamation, meaning no one ran against the candidates, so they got the job.

For example, in 2022, all Squamish-Lillooet Regional District electoral area directors were acclaimed. Both Squamish representatives on the school board—April Lowe and Lisa Turpin—also ran unopposed and so were acclaimed.

No shade intended about the fine folks who got the roles, but not having an election campaign where ideas are weighed and challenged, is never the best way to fill a government position in a democracy, if you ask us.

If you are eligible and have an interest in politics, but are intimidated by a run for council, perhaps give one of these other roles consideration.

The SLRD is run by an 11-member board of directors that represent the four electoral areas (A, B, C and D). The board is also run by seven municipal directors—folks elected to their respective councils and then appointed to an SLRD role.

Our region is currently represented by Area D director Tony Rainbow. Area D jurisdiction includes Upper Squamish and Paradise valleys, Pinecrest Estates, Black Tusk Village, Callaghan Valley, Porteau Cove, Furry Creek and Britannia Beach.

The SLRD is based out of Pemberton. There is a lot the SLRD board decides.

The regional government is responsible for land use planning, solid waste management, building inspection, fire protection, emergency preparedness, 911 services, recreation, water and sewer utilities, transit, trails and open spaces as well as financial support for libraries and other community services.

In 2025, the SLRD board approved the rezoning and development agreement for the South Britannia master-planned community, which includes the surf park. Not a small decision.

For School District #48, there are seven board of education trustees, two elected to represent Squamish. The board meets out of the headquarters in Squamish.

n December 2009, the provincial government of B.C. headed by Gordon Campbell established a reconciliation agreement with the Haida Nation that renamed the Queen Charlotte Islands to Haida Gwaii. In 2010, provincial documents and maps began to reflect the change. This was a significant departure on Indigenous issues for a premier who had—just eight years earlier—mailed ballots to registered voters across the province asking for reassurance on eight poorly designed questions related to treaty negotiations.

Almost 17 years later, a majority of British Columbians (51 per cent, down six points since June 2024) agree with the decision to rename the Queen Charlotte Islands as Haida Gwaii, while just under one in four (23 per cent, unchanged) disagree and 26 per cent (up six points) are undecided.

This year, agreement with the name change reaches 56 per cent in Southern B.C., Northern B.C. and Vancouver Island, and drops slightly in the

Fraser Valley (52 per cent) and Metro Vancouver (49 per cent). Majorities of British Columbians who in 2024 voted for the BC New Democratic Party (NDP) (66 per cent) or the BC Green Party (60 per cent) also support the name change, along with 41 per cent of those who cast ballots for Conservative Party of BC candidates.

Even at a time of renewed interest in Indigenous issues, as well as a clearer focus on reconciliation, the collective appetite for renaming the province or modifying the provincial flag has not gone through any significant fluctuations over the past two years.

Across the province, two-thirds of residents (66 per cent, up one point) say nothing bothers them about the name British Columbia. Only seven per cent (up one point) are troubled by the “Columbia” part of the province’s name, while 16 per cent dislike the “British” part (down two points) and 17 per cent (unchanged) are unhappy with the absence of an acknowledgement to Indigenous peoples.

Negligible proportions of British Columbians aged 55 and over are upset about the word “British” (12 per cent) and the fact that the province lacks an Indigenous name (10 per cent). Unease about these two features rises to 15 per cent and 16 per cent BC: Continued on 13

British Columbians aged 18 to 34 have different views. More than half (51 per cent) find the name of the province bothersome, compared to just 33 per cent of those aged 35 to 54 and 22 per cent of those aged 55 and over. More than one in five of the province’s youngest adults (23 per cent) are upset by the word “British” and more than one in four (27 per cent) would like to see an acknowledgement of Indigenous peoples in the province’s name.

When this question is analyzed by ethnicity, some fascinating trends are evident. Respondents of Indigenous descent are understandably more likely to clamour for a provincial name that acknowledges First Nations (38 per cent).

The “British” component is a turnoff for 31 per cent of Indigenous residents and 32 per cent of those with South Asian heritage.

Despite these spikes, the appetite for action remains low. Across B.C., 58 per cent of respondents (down two points) disagree with changing the name of the province to acknowledge its Indigenous heritage, while 28 per cent (down one point) would like to see this happen and 13 per cent (up three points) are undecided.

Support for actively exploring a name change for B.C. is highest among those aged 18 to 34 (43 per cent), residents of Northern B.C. (38 per cent), BC Green Party voters (39 per cent) and respondents whose heritage is Indigenous (51 per cent) or South Asian (49 per cent).

Support for a re-design of B.C.’s provincial flag that would remove the Union Jack stands at 26 per cent this year (down five points), with 52 per cent of respondents (up one point) disagreeing with this notion and 22 per cent (up three points) saying they are not sure.

A re-designed flag is more appealing to South Asian respondents (41 per cent),

BC Green voters (35 per cent), residents of the Fraser Valley (29 per cent) and British Columbians aged 18 to 34 (34 per cent).

The survey’s results do not suggest that an all-encompassing effort to change the name of the province is imminent. Most British Columbians are satisfied with the current name. Still, the generational divide might make it impossible for these discussions to disappear entirely.

One doesn’t have to go to Furry Creek to find non-roadworthy motorcycles pulling stunt wheelies at approximately twice the speed limit. Judd Road in Brackendale offers this feature daily.

My wife and I both ride motorcycles and fully understand unlicensed, uninsured, two-stroke dirt bikers harmlessly putt-putting along residential roads to local trailheads. What our neighbourhood struggles with is the evening parade of certain riders rocketing past driveways, blowing stop signs, in 10 p.m. wheelies, at

Sure, it’s the noise, it’s the risk/example to our kids as they learn to navigate the road, it’s the damage to the already embattled reputation of motorcyclists in general—but it’s the deeper implications of such no-think behaviour that are more communally worrisome. The immediate public nuisance of this rider is nothing compared to the public cost of his (or the person he hits) entitlement to a spot in our local ER /intensive care ward ahead of the member of our community who surely needs it for far less arbitrary reasons.

And I know a particular rider (who I saw most recently) is just a kid, but his actions belie a blindspot of care and accountability to the community in which he and

his parents live. The cops are busy where they should be, out on Highway 99, policing those inflicting risk outside their immediate communities. For those of us who have the privilege to ride where we live, we just need to slow down, think, and ensure our kids on dirt bikes are doing the same.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LETTERS: Continued from 13 Squamish for over a decade. It saddens me that I am leaving a town I once loved, not because I want to, but because I no longer feel it is a place where I can realistically build a future.

Over the years, I have watched the quality of life in Squamish decline. The homelessness crisis has become increasingly visible, while theft, vandalism, and other forms of crime appear to be worsening. Residents are expected to accept these problems as the new normal, yet meaningful action seems lacking.

Irresponsible dog ownership is another issue that continues to affect the community.

Off-leash dogs in on-leash areas, owners who fail to control aggressive or disruptive dogs, and a lack of visible enforcement create unnecessary stress and safety concerns for responsible pet owners, families, and wildlife alike.

The relentless pace of development is also deeply disappointing. Instead of thoughtful, attractive architecture that complements the extraordinary mountain landscape, Squamish is increasingly being filled with cheaply built, uninspiring developments. Many appear to prioritize speed and profit over quality. It is particularly concerning to see buildings fitted with low-quality infrastructure, such as elevators that are frequently out of service, leaving elderly residents, people with disabilities, and parents with strollers struggling to

access their own homes. This should never be considered acceptable in modern housing.

What makes this even harder to accept is the extraordinary cost of living. Housing costs continue to rise, yet many residents are paying more while receiving less in terms of infrastructure, public services, and overall quality of life. Squamish has become increasingly unaffordable for ordinary working people.

It is shameful that a town with such incredible natural beauty has been allowed to develop in this way. The mountains, forests, and ocean deserve a community that reflects and protects them, rather than one dominated by unattractive developments and declining public confidence.

I am genuinely saddened to be leaving behind the life I built here over the last 10 years.

However, I am also thankful that I have the opportunity to leave. Many people who are equally frustrated by the direction Squamish has taken do not have that choice.

I hope the council listens to the concerns of long-term residents before more people decide that leaving is their only option. Squamish has enormous potential, but it requires leadership that prioritizes thoughtful planning, public safety, accessibility, affordability, and the long-term wellbeing of the community over short-term growth.

Celebrating Squamish’s Young Swimmers The Squamish Pirates Swim Club recently welcomed athletes from across the Lower Mainland as the host of the Vancouver & District Regional Summer Swimming Championships at Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Aug. 1 and 2.

The two-day championship brought together 384 athletes representing five swim clubs, supported by dozens of coaches, officials and over a hundred dedicated volunteers. Hosting an event of this size is a significant achievement and reflects the tremendous commitment of the Pirates Swim Club, its volunteers, officials and the many families who worked behind the scenes to make the weekend a success.

The championships also showcased the strength of Squamish’s own swimmers. The Squamish Pirates athletes delivered an outstanding performance in front of a hometown crowd, with 47 swimmers qualifying for the BC Summer Swimming Provincial Championships in Kamloops on Aug. 14 to 16.

Beyond the medals and qualifying performances, the weekend highlighted the positive role that community sport plays in Squamish. Events like these provide young athletes with opportunities to develop confidence, resilience and lifelong friendships while bringing visitors into our community and showcasing Brennan Park Recreation Centre as an important regional recreation facility.

hen local Cathy Anderson laces up her runners for the annual Squamish Terry Fox Run in September, it will mark the 46th time she has participated in the fundraising event.

For Anderson, 57, a cancer scientist, the event is so much more than just a family fun run.

Her first run was when she was 10 years old.

She had various ailments as a kid, though not cancer, and the run struck a cord.

“I grew up in North Delta, and I was impressed that … a guy from my neck of the woods was doing something so big and impressive,” she recalled.

And the fact that Fox did what he did while living with cancer made it all the more impressive.

MARATHON OF HOPE Fox was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) in his right leg in 1977 and had his leg amputated. He was so impacted by what he went through and saw of others’ suffering that he was determined to make a difference. Thus, the 1980 Marathon of Hope was born.

UNIQUELY SQUAMISH This year’s Squamish run, set for Sept. 20, will officially kick off with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Participants are invited to stay for a post-run barbecue featuring live music by Monty Biggins.

The run starts at the Municipal Campground (39275 Loggers Lane) beside Brennan Park.

Parking is limited, thus attendees are encouraged to find other ways to arrive.

Participants can run or walk the wheelchair-and stroller-friendly four-kilometre course, with the option to complete the course twice for an eight-kilometre challenge.

RENOVATIONS NEARLY COMPLETE AT LAWN BOWLING FACILITY The Eaglewind lawn bowling green is expected to reopen in mid to late August following a $54,000 restoration project It is now about ready for bowlers again.

The $54,000 project was made possible thanks to a $39,000 contribution from The Squamish 55+ Community Society, according to Hill.

The District is contributing the remaining funds for the project.

The facility will be accessible to all ages, and rental equipment will be available at The 55+ Activity Centre during operational hours.

“The District is aiming to have some basic care equipment such as soft push brooms on site for public maintenance, like sweeping before or after use,” Hill said, adding that the District doesn’t typically close outdoor assets such as courts, but the green may not be usable in the winter months due to debris or maintenance.

The court will be most usable during fair weather, from April to October.

“We are excited to reopen the new and improved court to the community,” Hill said.

ave you noticed the recently refreshed lawn bowling green at the Eaglewind townhome development?

The upgraded lawn bowling court is expected to open mid-to late August, according to District spokesperson Steven Hill.

Locals might recall that the bowling green, originally an amenity contribution from Solterra Development, was very active after it first opened in 2010.

There was a competitive lawn bowling tournament on the green in September of 2011, for example.

But over time it fell into disrepair, becoming less and less usable by about 2015.
