Engel & Völkers has created several opportunities for our network to support Special Olympics, including our Contribution at Closing program, EVX fundraisers, online campaign, annual events, and the ability for our shops to partner with local Special Olympics chapters in their area for events.

a tale of two nations

Storytelling was, and remains, a traditional way for indigenous elders to pass down the values, history, cultural beliefs, and sacred stories of their people.

One story handed down for thousands of years, tells of the time when the Squamish and Lil’wat nations lived peacefully together in a village called Spo7ez, located in the area now called Function Junction.

Over time, the harmony amongst the villagers was lost. The Thunderbird saw this and flapped his wings creating a volcano and a huge rockslide that swept through the village, killing hundreds. The Squamish and Lil’wat people understood the Thunderbird’s message – live cooperatively in peaceful co-existence on this land –and they do to this day; the Squamish near the water, and the Lil’wat mainly in the mountains.

The Squamish Nation today has about 4,000 members. Their territory lies mainly along the Pacific Ocean and the west coast rainforest permeates their culture. They speak Skwxwú7mesh Snichem. In Skwxwú7mesh Snichem, they are known as Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw which translates to Squamish Nation, Coast Salish, as they are descendants of the Coast Salish peoples.

The Lil’wat Nation today has about 2,500 members. Traditional structures like the Istken (earthen dwelling) are reflective of their life in the mountain ranges. They speak Ucwalmicwts which means ‘language of the land’. In Ucwalmicwts, they are known as Líl wat7ul (Lil’wat Nation, Interior Salish), or ‘people of the land’. The Lil’wat are one of 11 communities that make up the Státimc Nation.

The two Nations came together in the spirit of their peaceful co-existence to create The Skwxwú7mesh Lilwat7úl Cultural Centre in their shared territory. The result is a breathtaking architectural marvel evoking the Squamish Longhouse and the Lil’wat Istken that opened in 2008.

A Cultural Journey

As you travel to Whistler, stop along the way to visit the kiosks (designated by the shape of woven cedar-bark hats) to enjoy a self-guided cultural journey of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations’ stories, myths, and history in the places where they occurred.

This informative journey culminates at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler Village. The SLCC offers hourly tours, guided by Cultural Ambassadors, that are visual, aural, and moving explorations of the rich and compelling histories and cultures of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations.

In addition to the exhibits and tours, the Thunderbird Café, located at the centre, also offers indiginous-inspired fare such as cedar plank salmon chowder served with traditional bannock and other locally sourced cuisine.

The gallery and gift shop offers authentic and exclusive handcrafted Northwest Coast First Nations merchandise.

Reflect on your surfaces...

Mirrors are a great way to bounce light around and will make the room feel bigger, brighter and better- especially if you go for a mirror that reflects your style and adds a little bit of fun. Another way to add some light is to choose tiles with a glazed finish, mirrored bedside tables or a glass-top end table.

Everything needs a home!…

Storage is a big must in a small space. Use clever storage solutions to clear away the clutter and free up your surfaces. Think about taking advantage of your wall space and installing shelving or bringing in pieces with built-in storage such as lift-top coffee tables or storage beds. Clearing the clutter and making sure each item has a home and purpose is a good way to maximize your space.

Give your furniture some space!

When dealing with small spaces, try not to overfill your space. Think carefully about how each piece fits, works and serves you. You may have a huge sofa that is hard to move around and means you lose out on valuable living space. Downsizing on a chunky piece will allow you to have more room and will make your room feel bigger.

Let your personality show...

Doing what you love is the most important part of the process. You are, after all, creating a space just for you. If you love pattern you can still use a funky wallpaper, even if it’s in a tiny guest bathroom - the key is to use pattern thoughtfully. Make sure the pattern ties in with your overall design by picking out a colour from the wallpaper and carrying that through into the rest of the design, ensuring you have a cohesive space.

Multi purpose pieces...

Be resourceful and think outside the box. You could use a chair as a bedside table or an ottoman as a coffee table so you have extra seating if needed. Adding wall lights (you can even get plug in ones now!) can free up precious surface area and may mean you can get rid of a floor lamp to free up some floor space.

Zoning

(You’ll need to get your colouring pencils out!)

Zoning is a great way to start planning your space. First, drawing a rough floor plan (it doesn’t have to be pretty or to scale). Next allocate a colour to each ‘Zone’ of your space for example, blue would be your living and relaxing zone and green would be your work space. Then colour parts of the floor plan in the different colours and see what works. This will help to look at your space objectively and decide which zone works best where. Get creative and don’t be afraid to move things around!

Utilize wall space.

Wall space can become surface space, storage and even work space. Think about putting more shelving up or switching to a ladder desk that folds out. Always consider the space as a whole when adding items to a wall and make sure you check the wall is structurally sound enough to hold the weight you need it to.

Get lit!

Good lighting can transform any space, not just a small one. There are 3 types of lighting: ambient, task and accent lighting. Consider which type of lighting you need and want in each ‘zone’ of your home, and keep in mind your daily routine; do you do your make up in the bathroom or bedroom? This requires even and bright lighting - this would be your task lighting. Ambient lighting is what you would use to create atmosphere. A relaxing, cozy living room would benefit from soft, warm and low lighting like table lamps.
