his issue is all about Style. It means diffent things to differnet people, and I must say my understanding of it has always been a bit diffent to most people’s. Inspiration can come from anywhere even from Vanilla Ice. Trust me.

Luckily WHEREVER prefers to take it from peole who know their stuff. We talk to the most stylish men out there like world famous architect Bill Bensley, photographer Kenton Thatcher and sculptor and designer Noé Duchaufour Lawrance - these guys certainly have an eye for aesthetics.

We also turn to the chic French style queens, like Isadora Limare and photographer Ludivine Pellissiere. There are stylish Americans too, like CEO Janet Morais, and bag designer Kasia Dietz. These women live and breathe style.

The Harvard-educated, Bangkok-based architect and hotel visionary follows his celebrated launch of Capella Hanoi with two more groundbreaking hotels – in Thailand and South Korea. He talks space, sustainability and storytelling with Lysanne Currie.

merican architect Bill Bensley is the man behind more than 200 luxury hotels, resorts and residences throughout Asia, acclaimed for their architectural elegance, witty wonder and incredible design detail. 2022 is set to be one of his best years yet – in January, the glorious Capella Hanoi threw open its doors and this summer will welcome the Intercontinental Khao Yai Resort in Thailand which will be followed by the JW Marriott Jeju in South Korea.

Named amongst the ‘100 most creative people in the world’ by Fast Company magazine, with his ‘irresistible’ designs in more than 30 countries, Bill Bensley currently has 45 projects in development amounting to around US$3 billion.

Reputed not to take on any project where there is a budget, he describes his unique and irreverent design philosophy as Lebih gila, lebih biak – Indonesian for ‘the odder, the better’.

Design in 1984. Having been taken under the wing of famed Canadian Israeli architect Moshe Safdie, he met classmate Lek Bunnang – now one of Thailand’s most creative architects – who would graciously go on to point Bill in the direction of Singapore. He never looked back.

“I was working with an architect from Bali, building frames for houses out of bamboo – we could actually pick them up and move them from place to place. It was like playing with toys: ‘That’s gonna go there and that’s gonna go there, and then they can put this one over here, and then I can see over the top of them.’ It was just so much fun!”

He founded his eponymous design firm in 1989 and, since then, the average budget for a Bensley project has grown from around US$90k per room for his first ever hotel, to in excess of US$1million per room in one of his recent creations, the JW Marriott Phu Quoc in Vietnam.

Island dream Unsurprisingly, the 63-year-old has also worked on many obscure and unusual briefs over the years as a result of his status among the architectural elite. For example, Bill is currently working on a palace in the Middle East that floats in the ocean and appears to emerge from the seabed where a lost civilisation was once discovered.

He continues to exercise his philanthropic ambitions, too. The award-winning architect who says Shinta Mani Wild is a ‘utopia of sustainability’, is spearheading a community outreach programme, the Shinta Mani Foundation, which offers longterm employment to locals, while nurturing the natural environment through conservation partnerships.

Bill also shared his ideas and vision in a white paper, Sensible Sustainable Solutions, and sells his artwork to raise money for the Wildlife Alliance Conservation.

“You really have to pick your battles. I have three E’s. Education: if you can educate

someone about a hotel, you can teach them something. If you can give them a new Experience – that’s important. And if you can teach them something about theEnvironment, whether social or natural, that’s great too,” he says.

The Intercontinental Khao Yai Resort is focused on the train travel of old. Tucked away in mountains of north east Thailand, the resort is wildlife rich and upcycled abandoned train carriages have been converted into luxury guest rooms and even a spa. JW Marriott in Jeju is inspired by the natural beauty of the island which ranges from subtropical landscapes to volcanoes and a snowy centre.

“It’s just so much fun,” he laughs. “I’m like a kid with a new toy. One day you can play with this, the next day you can play with that one.

It’s never a chore to design things and come up with new things. What is a chore sometimes is to make people understand the vision and give them the goal. The best way to do that is with humour – especially when there are language barriers.”

And there’s no chance of stopping or slowing down – he has just confirmed new projects in Nepal and the Congo. Bill Bensley knows no limits and has been defying all expectations with ‘unequalled masterpieces’ for more than 30 years. His breathtaking spaces make jaws drop in wonder –and he shows no sign of stopping. Lucky us.

Cecilia Bönström A Swede in Paris, Cecilia Bönström is the very talented artistic director of French fashion powerhouse Zadig & Voltaire.

From Catwalk to Creative What first took you to Paris?

In 1989, the year I graduated from high school, John Casablanca , the founder of Elite model management, asked me to come to Paris to work. I thought I would just stay a summer but I never left.

Have you always been interested in style and fashion?

When I look at my childhood albums and I see how my mother dressed my brother, sister and me, I think she silently educated me and my fashion eye, and so fashion has always been part of me or simply even in my genes. One day my mother would dress us up in long romantic dresses and white straw hats, one day a black turtleneck and Burberry coats, or just white smoking shirts with a bow tie. After school I was a model and I loved wearing different clothing every week. And at that time I liked advising my friends how to buy and wear clothes . And then in 2003, I joined Zadig & Voltaire.

I got when they offered me the job as Creative Director in 2006.

Any key turning points in your life?

Obviously, leaving school in 1989 and becoming a model and never going back to university was the first one.

Then in 2003 when I decided, one morning, waking up, just like that, without thinking on that same idea the night before, that being 33 years old, and being a mother of two

what other people do or know. Just concentrate on what God gave you and always try to do better. You compete with yourself and not anybody else.

What’s your own personal style?

I like to wear simple and comfortable designs. A pair of blue jeans with a white cotton shirt or a denim shirt. A pair of black jeans with a black sweater or a white t-shirt with a blazer.

A short dress with sneakers.

Denim shorts with féminin flat sandals and a beautiful silk top.

“Always dress in a way that you look good day to night. Never too sophisticated and never too sexy.”

How did you take over the creative leadership of Zadig?

When I started at Zadig, I asked to be an assistant. It was very clear for me that it’s one thing to love fashion but a whole other thing to create fashion.

And I wanted to learn everything in a way that I had no pressure in the beginning. Not like the huge pressure

children, that suddenly I didn’t want to be a model anymore! I wanted to learn something and I called up Zadig & Voltaire out of the blue. In 2006, accepting the challenge of becoming Head of Design at Zadig & Voltaire, without any fashion studies. In 2007, divorcing and living alone and 2016 was also key, when I dared to believe in myself a bit more and put more Cecilia in the collections I was working on. And, in 2022 divorcing again and loving starting all over again at age of 52!

What’s next?

Anything ! And that is an amazing feeling.

Life motto?

Smile and the world will smile to you.

Quick tips on achieving that laid-back, perfect ‘French Zadig style’?

Don’t wear too much makeup.

Never wear a ponytail, but loose hair out.

Always short and straight cut nails.

Never a too tight t-shirt.

How is life in Paris?

I love my home country and Stockholm, but Paris is for me the most beautiful city ever. It’s a big business town but at the same time charming as a village. Of course there is traffic but less stress and hectic tempo than other big capitals. You have a good mix of parks, museums, galleries and restaurants. You can bike around or the subway is super easy. I worked very hard obviously to get where I am today. But today I have organised my life in the very beautiful and residential area of the 16th

arrondissement, walking distance to the Champs Élysées. And I live three minutes from my third son’s school, four minutes from work and five minutes from my sport, and one minute from an amazing food market, so I have as little stress as possible.

Any secret places to recommend for the stylish?

My secret places would be my hypnosis guy, Simon Levy on Avenue Victor Hugo.

Reformer Pilates at Snake & Twist on Rue Saint Didier, and for body massages Holidermie in the Marais. There’s also my Facialist at Biologique Recherche on the Champs Élysées, and I buy my organic Tata Harper beauty products at Oh My Cream. For candles, Dyptique or Cire Trudon, and white plates from Astier de Villatte.

On the fashion side, Gas de Marie on Avenue George V, Courrèges on Avenue Francois 1er, as well as Paco Rabanne and Zadig & Voltaire on Rue Cambon .

My favourite French bakery is Bonon on Rue Longchamp and my favourite restaurant is Aux Pres by famous chef Cyril Lignac. And my favourite haunt is the bar of Chateau Voltaire on Rue St Roch.

Would you ever move to another location?

I could maybe move to Stockholm, or if I fall in love, follow that person anywhere in the world actually. But my priority is Paris. Sometimes I just walk around in Paris, admiring the beauty and I can almost not realise that I’m actually part of that amazing city.

So, expat or a local?

I will always be an expat because I’m proud of being Swedish, but I do feel ‘très parisienne’.

Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance is a French designer working across a wide range of disciplines and materials with a narrative deeply rooted in nature.

His approach to design celebrates the coming together of heritage, materials, industrial design, natural forms and fine craftsmanship.

A Sculptor by Design orn in the south of France in 1974, he followed the footsteps of his father, with an academic training in sculpture from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art, followed by a degree in furniture design from the renowned Les Arts Décoratifs. Fuelled by a rich creative background, Noé approaches design with an instinct and sensibility that gives form to projects ranging from architecture to furniture, interiors and bespoke, limited edition collections. His sculptural work showcases a respect for the past, combined with a simplicity of line and an honest desire to create pieces that last.

“Whenever I can I go to kite-surf 30 minutes from my studio or my house, on the water I feel free again.”

He has designed for industry leaders such as Saint Louis, Hermès, Ligne Roset, Cinna, Ceccotti collezioni, Bernhardt Design, Sèvres, Mobilier National, Dior, Baccarat, La Chance, Petite Friture, Zanotta, Tacchini, ZaoZuo, Kundalini, Neal Feay, as well as many exhibitions and cultural institutions.

His architectural spaces include boutiques for Montblanc, Air France and SFL business lounges #Cloud Business Center lounges, the interior of the Ciel de Paris and Sketch in London, as well as private residences around the globe.

What brings you to Lisbon?

When I arrived in Paris for my studies, I said that I would only stay a few years there. I stayed for more than 20 years.

Paris has a fantastic energy which can be a booster, but it is also really demanding,

and it can take you away from your priorities. The moments that I was enjoying the most were when I was leaving the city to go to my countryside house near to the North Sea. I grew up in Brittany so I need the presence of the sea, its iodine smell, the movement of the waves, the horizon.

I was working worldwide, without touching the ground. I needed to reconnect with my close environment, nature, and take time to appreciate human relations. I had the sensation that Portugal could offer this kind of connection due to its size and its attachment to the land. The Portuguese I have met have a great sense of what is around them, a sense of reality. In good and bad ways as sometimes, it can stop you in your dreams but when we speak about grounded projects, Portugal is beautiful for this.

Have you always been interested in design and creation?

I grew up in a creative family. I did not know my father, but he was a sculptor.

And my mother was teaching art at school. She was always showing me some art. I remember visiting some artisans on the road as every summer when we were going around with her 2CV car.

Can you pinpoint key turning points in your life that put you on your path?

I decided to be a designer when I was 13 years old. I didn’t have many connections with design from Brittany, but I

beauty of it. And all the materials coming from it, and the men and women who are working close to it.

Any words of wisdom? Life motto?

Take the risk of freedom.

discovered the work of Philippe Starck.

Then, my stepfather (who is English) arrived at home with an article on Ron Arad, when he was doing some crazy sculpture work. This field of expression was a great way to continue in my father’s footsteps – sculpture, while doing design.

What’s it like being an entrepreneur ‘abroad’?

Made in Situ is a project I have had for a long time in the back of my mind, but I felt that Portugal was the place where it could become reality. I don’t feel like an entrepreneur. Made In Situ is a project, a platform, not a brand. It allows us to be free in the creative process.

How did the idea to use burnt cork come to you?

While moving to Portugal, I drove through the dramatic fires of summer 2017. This visceral experience had a lasting effect on me. It took more than two years to develop the collection, from the raw material – the cork blocks – to the shaping of the pieces.

The intention of designing a collection with charred cork first emerged in Faro, Algarve in October 2018 while visiting a family company specialising in cork block making named NF Cork. The first challenge was to develop the custommade ‘gradient’ blocks with NF Cork: a gradient composition of granules revealing burnt cork from forest fires.

What inspires you?

The landscapes, nature in all its senses, from an ecosystem to the physical

How is everyday life in Lisbon?

I love it, it is the perfect scale, and depending on where you are, everything is so local. It’s an attractive city but it is also a victim of its success. Too many projects going on, the explosion of real estate, due to a lot of foreign investments. Before going to Lisbon, I was targeting Barcelona, but it has been damaged by tourism. Now this is happening in Lisbon. The development tourism attracts so many people who are not trying to understand anything about where they are. And, unfortunately, a lot of small businesses around this are comforting them in this position.

Any secret places to recommend?

Certainly not! I learned with the time that spoiling secret spots is the worst thing to do, even more now with the Instagram communities. I almost blame the ones who are showing their secret spots, it killed so many amazing gems.

Lisbon has changed so much in the last couple of years. Are your reasons for coming here still there?

Yes, whatever happens, Portugal is resilient, and there is still space for evolution. And the countryside of Portugal is deserted. Perhaps with time, some people will come back to these small villages that have been almost abandoned to recreate a positive ecosystem around.

What’s next?

The roads of Portugal and the artisans I met, reminded me in so many ways of the ones I used to travel and meet in other countries, like France or Italy. I want to open Made in Situ to some other environments.

Expat or a local?

I’m a world citizen, more than ever I don’t feel either one or the other wherever I am.

Ethical, Beautiful & Practical

hy Lisbon?

Lisbon has all the advantages of an international capital city, but above all, it is close to nature.

During the week, I am fed by this city in emulation, bathed in culture, events and activities, where I can meet and exchange with lots of entrepreneurs full of ideas. It’s a great city to live in, its people and sunshine make you smile all year round and you feel safe. I love its architecture and its gastronomy; you can enjoy it with your eyes and your taste buds.

On weekends, it’s like going on vacation! I go to Caparica and enjoy the beauty of its miles of beach. It is magnificent. There are plenty of beach clubs, each with a different soul and concept. You swim in the icy water and warm up under the sun while waiting for the sunset with live music, and it often ends in the evening. It’s the good life and there is a real openness, full of benevolence!

Beyond this unique lifestyle, the other reason is professional, since my production is located in Porto, three hours from Lisbon, which allows me to be closer to my partners and to be flexible in my creation.

Have you always been interested in style and fashion?

Yes, from a very young age thanks to a very elegant mother who was not afraid to be remarkable! With a style that was always impeccable, original and often colourful, she was always imposing and always with class. She used to take me with her to the greatest fashion designers who took care of her fittings, like Alaia, Jean Paul Gaultier and my best memories are with the unique Thierry Mugler, my idol. All three have in

common the genius and the talent to have valued the woman by creating superb armors allowing them to express their empowerment! I think that’s what inspired me to create my PRYSM collection, which has a graphic look mixing Art Deco and the 80s. I imagined bold, playful and acidic, candy-coloured design pieces.

How was your brand born?

While studying business, I launched a collection of ‘young designers’ for the Galeries Lafayette with a friend, and that’s when it all started.

After spending over 10 years in the media, and having experienced the incredible evolution of digital, I missed the creative aspect. I wanted to become an entrepreneur, so I launched myself into the world of leather goods which was unknown to me but I had my convictions.

First of all, I considered that the handbag was not only an important accessory for women, a companion that almost never leaves her, but that it should therefore go beyond aesthetics, to bring indispensable functional and practical innovations. I knew that for many women what matters most is to carry a bag with a prestigious signature.

But, I had another plan: to design bags that are beautiful, of course, but also offer bags that could adapt to their pluralistic lifestyle and style.

The programme evolves during the day, and the seasons. Start with a yoga class, super fresh and healthy juices. You’ll also find a co-working space, live music every day, revisited cocktails seen nowhere else and a delicious menu with refined and quality products. 

It made me much more reckless and adventurous, showing me that anything is possible if you give yourself the means.

CASA REIA

The newest place in Caparica is a sublime beach club with a high-quality decoration perfectly fitting within nature. Their concept is about sharing experiences and respecting nature.

With workshops to learn how to live better, together and a very healthy and gourmet food, with a menu created by my favourite chef here Udi Barkan.

NYC is my heart city, it gave me one of my most beautiful years! I love to go back there and meet my friends from 20 years ago.

Bali is a special destination because it has inspired and guided me twice. The first time when I left the media and advertising world. I didn’t know then exactly what to do and that’s where the idea of creating my brand came.

Then after four frantic years , I decided to leave, alone, and head to Bali.

I went on a spiritual retreat, discovered the local handicrafts, and took new inspirations. I stayed for eight months.

That’s when I chose to move to Lisbon.

This city makes me want to get involved in even more concrete actions for nature, especially for the preservation of the oceans.

What makes your bags special?

I have chosen a design that plays with conventions. Behind this aesthetic I like to propose what I call playful modularity.

The MINI PRYSM, can be worn in more than seven different ways!

I use Marine Leather, a material that is part of my innovations. In the midst of introspection on my consumption, I also wanted to propose ethical and sustainable materials, like Maritime Leather. The skins (salmon, perch, sea bass) that I use come from the food industry and are then recycled into luxury products. The final treatment of

the fish skin brings chic, glamour and originality. It is a surprising material that beyond its multiple appearances is surprisingly very solid, thin and flexible.

What is it like to be an entrepreneur ‘abroad’?

It is inevitably a little more adventurous, with additional challenges. You don’t have the same points of reference. You have to know how to adapt constantly, but it is also enriching.

My dream and my ambition are to build a strong and autonomous team, which allows me the luxury to travel all over the world to draw my inspiration and to be involved mainly in the creation.

Any turning points in your life?

Travels made me evolve by opening my mind and bringing me new perspectives. I spent six months in Madrid and almost a year in New York.

Words of wisdom?

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

What is your personal style?

I don’t have just one, I have many.

That’s how the idea of having a multifunctional bag that would adapt to my life moments, but also to my different personalities and styles, was born.

And I’m addressing the multi-faceted women, the ‘wonder women’ of our generation, who oscillate between their roles as mom, businesswoman, sportswoman, and many others, by offering them a bag, in their image: multi-faceted.

The Iconic Photographer Kenton Thatcher is an Internationally-acclaimed, award winning, contemporary portrait and advertising photographer from the UK, living in Lisbon now for over 25 years. diversity as well as the beautiful almost guaranteed sunlight.

Kenton has now built a reputation as one of the main advertising, portrait and lifestyle photographers in Lisbon, and internationally.

almost like a do or die! It was a BIG ‘wake-up call’ and certainly working on the Pirelli calendar, which at the time was probably the most talked about calen-dar globally.

One of his very last assignments before ‘going it alone’ as a photog-rapher was as lead assistant to internationally-acclaimed photogra-pher Clive Arrowsmith on one of the prestigious and iconic Pirelli Calendars of 92.

What first took you to Lisbon?

My first encounter with Portugal was as a freelance assistant, we would come to photograph for English catalogues for clothing com-panies such as Next, GUS and Littlewoods to shoot the Spring Sum-mer collections in the Algarve and then travel up to Lisbon to shoot the Autumn Winter collections. Many photographers back then in the 80s just loved Portugal and its

I think if I would use the words ‘key points’ there are several in my life. As a kid I got thrown into this crazy world of photography which couldn’t have been more different from the sweet suburban London that I was brought up in. Entering this world was

orn in London, Kenton quickly became immersed in the world of photography thanks to his father’s obsession with the camera. At the tender age of 14, he started printing after school in his dad’s darkroom garage. Taking the prints to school the next day, he gained more popularity with his creativity than his academic skills, which he later found out was due to severe dyslexia. By the age of 17 he started travelling the world and was fortunate enough to assist some of the world’s most talented and celebrated photographers specialising in fashion, editorial, travel and advertising .

Soon after moving to Portugal I photographed Luis Figo who was in Barcelona at the time for a TAG Heuer watch campaign. That soon led me to shoot many of the Portuguese soccer players, which in turn led me into working on photographing many of the advertising cam-paigns which were featured worldwide in promoting Portugal as hosts to the Expo 98 world fair in Lisbon.

Also, I think being in Lisbon in the early/mid 90s was certainly being in the right place at the right time as a photographer. I thought I was always passing through and not going to stop for long, so I took more risks with what I was doing in photography.

In 2017 I was made a Sony Ambassador in Portugal which also was a game changer for me. It changed the way that I was shooting my im-ages, and I started shooting far more lifestyle photography.

And lastly, the latest news from June 2022, when I was honoured to be awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), which I still excitingly have to receive from Buckingham Palace!

Anyone in particular you’d like to photograph again?

Well, sadly I missed photographing Amalia Rodrigues. We spoke sev-eral times together but our shoot never happened and then she passed away. I have a long list of new Portuguese talent on my hit list, as well as a

Any words of wisdom?

Never Get Old, Ken… Never Get Old, wise words inherited from my fa-ther.

Do you have a photographic style?

My style is very much based on my personal inspiration of certain photographers and painters from the past – Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Rembrandt – where the images have a simplicity about them. What I love to do is document people at certain times in their life. I keep things very simple in most of my portraits in such a way that if you don’t know the person my images look timeless. I do this by what the person wears, I keep the background plain black, grey or white and if they wear a plain white or black T-shirt or polo neck sweater, this kind of clothing never dates. With this combination the only thing that really ages with time is the person sitting for the portrait.

Anything in particular that inspires you?

Life Inspires me. People Inspire me. I think I have more passion and love for what I’m doing now than ever before and have no idea why. I think I used to doubt my work and it’s taken me 35 years to suddenly realise I can take on anything.

I think I have one of the great professions in life. I actually get paid to hang out with and photograph super talented and interesting people of all dif-ferent professions, from politicians, scientists, athletes, musicians to artists. I think it’s time to produce a book!

How’s life in Lisbon?

My little Lisbon has changed enormously over the years. One of the things I loved when I first visited Portugal as a teenager was that I felt I had really gone back in time. I felt I was in a city of the 50s and 60s. Then, after I moved here in the 90s I felt I was at the beginning of the new Portugal, and these were exciting times. I loved the quirkiness of Lisbon, the behind closed doors of bars and clubs where you would just knock and someone would open a port hole window, take a look at you and then invite you in. It felt more of a 24-hour city than my hometown London. Everything was so condensed – everything within walking distance – with so many great restaurants, bars and coffee shops in close proximity.

I never really understood why more foreigners didn’t live in Lisbon, as it’s a city with all the right ingredients: great quality of life, the food, beaches within 15 minutes of a city, and 300 guaranteed days of sun a year – a pho-tographer’s dream!

I’m certainly more local than expat and really have no current desires to move back to the UK, especially in what I’m sadly seeing in these past few years, although I’m still certainly proud to have my English side as well.

Amanda Zuydervelt

The Dotcom Style Entrepreneur Born in Amsterdam, raised in Portugal and educated in the UK, Amanda Zuydervelt lives in Switzerland.

She is the founder of Stylebible.com and Omneque, a marketplace for vintage and antique jewellery.

Where are you based? What took you there?

I’m based in Switzerland. After my parents died, there were a lot of legal bills and complications and I needed to find a fair chunk of cash to make sure I could keep my mum’s house, so I googled where I could earn the most money and pay the least tax.

The choices were the Cayman Islands, (too far), Dubai (not for me) or Switzerland. Next, I googled jobs in Switzerland; I applied to Nestle Tuesday, interviewed Thursday and moved on Sunday.

How was starting this business for you?

Any advice?

I started stylebible.com in 2005. I was invited to take part in THE Dragon’s Den, which I did – regretfully, as it wasn’t the experience I was expecting, but the press loved it. It was a little before it’s time and I was just that little bit too early.

I also have a real love of dogs and decided to start a dog brand called Dudley & Co in 2019, named after my Vizsla. It is a British brand that makes high quality clothes and accessories for dogs and for the owners that love them. I started Dudley & Co as a side hustle to start with, while I was still in full time employment but when the opportunity for Omnēque came along I knew it was time to go all in and really make a go of it.

Omnēque was a much bigger venture and was the first business I started on this scale.

It’s been a rollercoaster journey that I’ve loved. I’ve worked with the best in class within the jewellery industry.

All three businesses taught me so much.

Stylebible opened so many doors to me but it was hard to scale as I’d launched in June 2005 and by February 2006 my world turned

For me, the hardest thing is being too trusting. Contracts need to be in place to ensure you are protected. I’ve had my fingers burnt a couple of times, but with each experience you learn. It’s all part of the journey. My advice is to get paperwork signed, don’t work on trust! And, whatever funds you think you need, double it – if you can – because it’s always more expensive than you think it is.

You also really have to look after the people that work for you; the products only take you so far, then it’s all about the people. I learnt that from my mum who always had a very loyal staff at her restaurants. The team makes all the difference.

As a founder, it’s stressful so you really have to make sure you find ways to strike a balance, make time for yourself, whether that’s running, going to the gym, walking the dog – time out is important.

Was it a childhood dream to work with gems?

I have always had a love of jewellery. When my mum left my dad, I came home from boarding school and she had this fabulous new ring. I asked who the ‘new boyfriend’ was and she told me she’d remodelled the engagement ring and wedding ring into one ring: “Darling, I’m not letting good diamonds go to waste”. I worked with luxury brands for two decades in tech and I saw that Watchfinder got sold – there was nothing like it for jewellery – the idea was born.

“I’m not religious but when I’m asked for my religion, kindness is always the answer.”

Are you passionate about all things vintage?

Why would anyone buy gold-plated jewellery when it’s going to end up in landfill because it’s tarnished? You can buy beautiful, unsigned gold for comparable prices that will last a lifetime, I’ve always bought less but better! I’d rather buy one item of quality over quantity.

In today’s world what we buy and how we buy it says a lot about us. We need to think about our resources and we already have so many gems that vintage makes perfect sense. Not only that but the craftsmanship of vintage is so much better than that of repro.

Any key turning points in your life?

My parents dying in 2006 was a huge turning point, I’m an only child so life felt very upside down for a while. I found myself facing a lot of debt that wasn’t mine. It took a lot of hard work to turn things around at a time I really had to dig deep for motivation. It was a miracle I didn’t go bust but it taught me resilience and it made me stronger. I came through the other side smiling – I’m very proud of that.

Life mottos?

I’ve always ‘paid it forwards’. I loved the film of the same name and the concept behind it where a young boy attempts to make the world a better place. Being kind to others is super important to me.

How do you define style? What is your style?

I am lucky that I’ve got to work with a lot of stylists who find me some great stuff but I also try and stay away from the high street. I get to travel fairly frequently and I love finding independent boutiques with quirky dresses.

How is life in your expat home?

It’s not quite London, I miss it terribly as so many of my friends are there. Switzerland is clean and beautiful but I struggle with the rules. I also find the Swiss somewhat cold.

I live here with my dog Dudley. I love the hikes we do together, he’s rather sporty and comes paddle boarding on the lake with me in summer and he comes up to Verbier skiing with me in the winter. He’s got super cute boots to protect his paws from the snow, his Dudley and Co jacket and he runs alongside me when I ski. That’s definitely my happy place!

Janet Morais

The Passionate Interior Designer American born Janet Morais is the CEO of home decor brand KOKET, recently moved to Lisbon. Reputed for its edgy design aesthetic KOKET was born from her interior design business and branding agency DeMorais International in the USA. How did you come up with the Koket brand?

It is my personal mission to empower through design, content and experiences. So, I created ByKOKET Luxury Group, which holds KOKET. The brand was born from my interior design business and branding agency DeMorais International, and it is the inspiration for my lifestyle magazine Love Happens and e-home decor boutique My Object of Desire.

Each of my professional endeavours offers a glimpse into my world and everything that moves me. Through my work I strive to share my joie de vivre and coquettish frill while empowering all willing to listen to be their best selves. My products are about unique, inspired design, craftsmanship, and bringing joy to those who encounter them. The KOKET collection was designed with a woman at its core, the pieces reflect her intuitions, emotions, desires, and needs. It is seductive in its design, message and image. I push all the boundaries and communicate it guilt free and openly as every woman should in every aspect of her life.

Have you always been interested in style and design?

Yes. At a very young age I developed an obsession with Paris, design and fashion

which led me to move to the captivating city of all things glamour. The desire to create a business heavily focused on design and style stemmed not only from my devotion to interior design and passion for exquisite home decor pieces but also the constant challenge of finding design and fashion that truly spoke to me.

What inspires you?

Women inspire me. Many of my pieces pay tribute to the female body, such as the Temptation console where the top is beautifully wrapped in luxurious exotic leather and the base draws inspiration from a woman’s hip bone. The mysticism of Asia also inspires me, as well as haute couture and jewellery design.

What’s next for Koket?

A media company focused on female empowered content, design and artistic talent.

What prompted you to leave the US? I was born in the US and raised between Portugal and the US which gave me a deep familiarity with both European and American culture which I continue to nurture today as I split my time between the two. This global perspective, my passion for design and hand craftsmanship have uniquely positioned me at the centre of the rapidly evolving international luxury market surrounded by the highest level of Portuguese artisans.

Any words of wisdom?

I am comfortable taking risks, turning heads and commanding attention with edgy designs, bold prints, and metallic finishes everywhere – all topped off with the perfect shade of cream.

How would you define Style?

My style is unapologetically feminine with a ‘koketish frill’, but style is the way you choose to live and express yourself. The key to my success in interior design is my ability to take someone’s personal / family lifestyle and translate it into an interior that makes them feel good. Taking a house and making it someone’s home is my greatest achievement, and this is attributed to understanding and respecting someone else’s style.

Three quick tips on achieving that laid back, perfect ‘Koket style’ if there is such a thing?

Knowing who you are, knowing what fulfils you and surrounding yourself with love, children and vanilla ice cream.

How is life in Lisbon?

Lisboa is a designer’s dream filled with pastel coloured architecture, diverse cultural influences, rich tradition and welcoming people. I find myself constantly surrounded by tradition, magnificent views and delicious pastries.

During the summer of 2021, my Lisbon office was swamped with Americans and other nationalities moving to Portugal and looking for a design firm that understood American design aesthetic and comfort.

This paired with Portuguese craftsmanship, know-how and premium service provided by our design team.

Any secret places to recommend?

The Branding Expert A TEDx speaker, personal brand expert and business mentor, Kelly Lundberg is proudly Scottish and based in Dubai.

What’s your expat story?

I moved to Dubai when I was 21; new city, new job. As Emirates airline cabin crew I saw an incredible opportunity to see the world, and with a base in Dubai it was certainly going to offer me much warmer weather than Scotland!

It didn’t take me long to soak up Dubai’s entrepreneurial spirit. With a can-do attitude and a vision that ‘anything is possible’ at the age of 24, I hung up my wings for the last time and took the next big step launching the Middle East’s first personal shopping and styling service.

How does personal style work with branding and identity?

My first real job was at the age of 14 in a hair salon, I loved seeing the confidence that came from a fresh haircut and the effect it had on individual personal presentation. I moved into retail which further cemented the power of presentation; what you wear

determines how people perceive you and how you feel about yourself.

Style is one part of personal branding, but it’s so much more. It’s all about consciously crafting a person’s public identity, which includes image, story, position, authenticity, and identity.

Can you pinpoint key turning points in your life?

The first turning point was moving to Dubai. It gave me the belief and the confidence to trust my life’s decisions and start my own business. After all, what’s the worst that can happen?

The second came after my divorce; rediscovering myself and the decision to radically change my business model.

How did your own consultancy come about?

We are all constantly evolving, personally and professionally. Selling my styling agency in 2019, I had the perfect platform to move forward with a new business model. I have always invested in my own personal development. I had a vested interest in personal branding and felt the time was right to focus on the next step, to guide lifestyle entrepreneurs to grow their personal brand to maximise impact and income.

What do you think is key about branding?

In business YOU are your best asset, yet so many hide behind what they do in fear of

judgement or lack of confidence. I want this to change! Through my learning and my practical experiences I help clients grow their credibility, likeability and trust and develop an online presence that they are proud of.

What took you to London?

Peter Pan was my favourite movie, and I always claimed that one day I will live in ‘that city’. Mind you, I had no idea where it was in the world, but I recognised the magic in it. As I grew older, personal and professional opportunities kept bringing me back and thus I began to love it as an adult.

Have you always been interested in style?

I believe so. My mom has always been very fashionable so at a young age I was always into the trends and learning by example.

Fashion, for me, has always been a form of self-expression so it’s really fun looking back and seeing each chapter of my ‘fashion life’ and seeing how that perspective has evolved as I’ve also evolved as a person.

How did your consultancy business come along?

After almost a decade of working in corporate America, I knew there had to be more to this industry than just booking jobs. I had to find the soul of what this industry is all about, and that’s what I set out to do with Idalia Inc. When I strategise with brands and influencers, I’m continually digging for the bigger picture. I’m not out to create a digital

campaign that is void of any human communication. I’m not out to hoard information so only a few are given the opportunity to truly succeed.

What’s it like being an entrepreneur/ business owner abroad?

Oh it’s great! As a first-generation American, my family really instilled in me the ‘American Dream’ and I’m so grateful to the States for allowing me the opportunity not only to dream, but to accomplish my dreams. Taking that hustle abroad really has been incredible.

Not only do I have in me that ambitious spirit, but I also get to learn from other cultures as well. It’s like taking the best of both worlds.

What an honour!

Can you pinpoint key turning points in your life?

I moved to New York City at the age of 30 to become the Director of Talent at NEXT. That really changed my whole perspective of not only the fashion industry – we were representing the best of the best of the time like Chiara Ferragni, Danielle Bernstein, Shea Marie – but of life in general. I remember always thinking: “If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere”. There is nothing like New York City.

Any words of wisdom / life motto?

YOLO! It sounds silly but that’s really what I tell myself daily. Sometimes when I’m feeling down on myself, I get a sharpie and I write on my hand. Like super big. We only live once, and it’s our duty as human-beings to live that to the

full. To leave the earth a better place than how we found it. And to bring happiness to those who surround us. After all, You Only Live Once!

Define your own personal style?

Ever-evolving.

Any tips on achieving your look / style’?

I can frankly say I really don’t try too hard when it comes to ‘my style’ – so maybe that’s the tip: Don’t try so hard. A good, winged eyeliner never fails, and the bouncier the hair, the better.

Any secret places to recommend for the stylish?

One of my insider tips in London is to get an Ice Lift Facial from Sunday Riley at Hershesons. Trust me, this will leave your skin glowing for days.

Best shopping places? Places to people watch? Places to be inspired?

I love the classics like Selfridges and Liberty.

Some mornings, I just jog on over and spend hours looking at the latest Styles by my favourite designers. It’s therapy / research for me. I also love that Anine Bing has a store here.

For people watching, you can’t get better than SoHo. My best friend and I love sitting outdoors with an Aperol Spritz. One of the things that makes London so special is that everyone has a unique style to them, and they’re unapologetic about it. It’s so refreshing and I love seeing it all.

I feel most inspired at the park, especially Kensington Gardens which is close to my flat. It’s truly a blessing being able to escape to nature in the middle of a big city.

Best/worse thing about being an expat?

Best thing is that I’ll always carry that American ‘you-can-do-whatever-you-setyour-mind-to’ spirit. Worse thing is that I can’t teleport myself to the USA. Plane trips are long and since the pandemic, airports have become a bit of a nightmare.

Expat or a local?

Both. I’m like Hannah Montana – best of both worlds.

What inspired you to enter the Hair and Beauty profession?

Ever since I was a child, growing up with a twin brother and younger sister in South Africa, I was aware of the power physical transformation could have on a person’s sense of self. I dreamed of owning a salon – somewhere people could walk in with the heaviness of the day but walk out feeling inspired and stylish.

How did your background play a role in your dreams?

My mother is Lebanese and my father Portuguese and, as a child, I lived in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. I have worked all across the world and have always felt a strong connection to multiple cultures and countries.

How did your career in hairdressing develop?

When I was 18-years-old, after two years competing in national hair modelling shows, I

moved to England and began studying hair in London. I worked my way steadily up to the top salons and, after twenty years of hard graft, I became an A-List celebrity hair stylist, travelling regularly to The Seychelles, Emirates and Europe. It was a privilege to work with such high profile talent. I learnt so much over the years and I like to think that all those experiences have led to my success now.

So why Portugal? What made you set up here?

Back in 2018 I took a trip to explore my family heritage and it was here that I fell in love with Cascais. Its atmosphere and beaches reminded me a lot of Cape Town and it seemed like the perfect place to start my own business.

What makes your services different to others?

It’s really important to me that each client enjoys a five-star experience. We provide complimentary beverages and snacks and use Kevin Murphy environmentally-friendly products. Good music and decor is also a must!

Do you have any plans for expansion in the future?

I will soon be diversifying into interior design and product manufacturing which is really exciting to me. However, whatever personal or home services I offer, the fact that clients feel stylish and inspired after collaborating with me is always my priority.

Embracing my own style

I

f personal style is how you express yourself in all facets of life, including clothing, interior design, art preferences, communication style, etc., shouldn’t it reflect your best self?

As expats, our individual style is ever evolving. The fact that it is greatly influenced by two worlds: where we’re from, and where we currently live, is pretty amazing. We can combine a fashionable Parisian skirt with a Nirvana t-shirt, or cook Italian Fettuccine with Thai curry (sorry, didn’t mean to offend any cooks) thanks to this, which makes us unique by definition.

“That’s who we are, a fusion of several styles, and we like it this way.”

When moving abroad, we all bring things with us; some of them are in boxes, while others are simply a part of who we are. In addition to bringing clothes, souvenirs, kitchenware, books and photographs, we also bring our food preferences, musical tastes, memories and cultural traditions.

What matters the most, is that we bring with us our approach to life, our beliefs, values and mindset. This is who we are, but soon enough the new place will influence all of those things.

It’s natural and highly recommended to try new things, adopt new styles, and embrace change on all levels, as long as you don’t lose yourself completely and become a total stranger to yourself.

Let’s talk about clothing style for a second.

When we go overseas, we often believe that we must alter our wardrobe in order to fit in.

Because of the changes in the weather, style and culture, or simply as it’s a fun opportunity to shop like crazy. It’s an option, but will it reflect who you really are?

Another option, would be to stick 100% to who you were, wearing only what you have, ignoring the new place, making you a total stranger. Imagine walking along a Portuguese beach while wearing your bulky, Canadian coat.

We don’t say that because everyone around you is dressed in vibrant prints, that you should do the same. You can, if you like it.

You could try it and see if it fits you; but if you prefer black trousers, then you should definitely wear those.

The takeaway is to maintain some of your personal style while attempting to fit in.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up, be special, different, and most importantly, just be yourself. Because when you like who you are, your style and all that goes with it, you are your best self.

Asking yourself, “Is it really my style or is it just me trying to fit in?” is the greatest method to make sure you’re aligned. Be honest, and then, the follow-up question should be “Does it reflect my best self?’. Just like with fashion trends, we change and evolve as well, so check in sometimes with these questions.

And don’t forget, when you’re true to yourself you’re never out of style.

ooking back on my years in the corporate world, I wore trouser suits and dark colours to blend in with the maledominated environment and workforce. I feel a little sad that I thought the only way be successful, was to not stand out visually.

Now I am living in southern Portugal, suits are long gone, replaced with an all-cotton casual wardrobe based on comfort rather than anyone else’s perception of me. Heels are no more, firstly due to the slippery caçada paving which adorns every pavement in Portugal, secondly, because my ankles now refuse to tolerate performing at such an acute angle, and thirdly, because they are useless in the mountains and at the beach, which is where I spend most of my time.

On my Instagram channel, I promote healthy, active and graceful ageing, a subject I am completely obsessed with. When I see women going under the knife, injecting botox, fillers and squeezing themselves into shapewear, I feel a sense of relief that I took another direction. Humans are strange creatures, we want to live a long life, but it seems nobody wants to get old. ‘You would get a facelift, if you could afford one’ is a message I’ve received more than once. Rather than offend me (which would be almost impossible), I thought of all the women longing for a facelift, desperate to earn the additional funds for surgery, in an effort to look affluent, as well as younger.

I don’t agree that looking younger should be our goal. Looking healthy, being active and

finding peace and happiness is my only focus. As we move from mother to empty nester, we can feel lost as to our place in the world, let alone what one should wear. Too young to dress like a granny, too old for the latest fashion trends. I opt for lots of colour as this brightens my mood as well as my wardrobe. Colours, smells and sounds – especially music – can impact our mental state and set us up, or down, for the day.

My grandma’s favourite colour was yellow, and it’s become mine too. In my twenties I was drawn towards red, in my thirties orange, forties blue and now I’m in my yellow phase of life and perhaps this is where I will stay.

Companies promote their brands using women in their twenties, not realising that women over forty have time to shop and more money to spend. I am a little different, choosing to only buy essentials and the occasional item of clothing. After selling 99% of everything I owned five years’ ago, I’m reluctant to replenish that burden. The process of Döstädning (Swedish death cleaning) set me on a path to minimalism, so my style is very simple but colourful, fun and comfortable with a little twist of funky. It’s easy to lose yourself in older age, harder to find your sense of style. Wear what you like, and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. They’re lost too!

M

y husband has wanted to move to Portugal for years and I was always the one who thought: ‘Noooo, we can’t do that, what about the kids/family/our house?’ One morning I woke up miserable as it was grey outside and he asked me again.

He said: “Imagine waking up to sunshine every day.” So, I thought: ‘OK let’s do it!’.

Three months later our house was packed up and we were on a flight to Portugal with no clue what to expect or where we were going.

A proper adventure!

I love that!”

I’m so happy to say that eight months in and we are loving it, feeling that sunshine on our faces is one of the many reasons why.

I’m a stay-at-home mum and a dog mum too, so I’m kept busy wearing all the usual hats us mums have. Since moving I’ve felt I’ve almost had to find myself again and discover what I love and enjoy, because being away from family and friends and being somewhere new, with the kids at school, has almost forced me to do this and I’ve got to say I’ve really enjoyed connecting with myself again. I also decided to blog our journey and made some YouTube videos in a bid to help anyone else that was thinking of making the move, creating content has been a really fun way to share our adventure with others.

Reconnecting with myself and living somewhere new led to my everyday style changing. When we left England I couldn’t bear to part with ALL my clothes so I brought 99.9% of them with me… and boy was that a mistake! I reckon I could have saved loads in shipping fees… shhhh don’t tell my husband.

Style for me is simplicity and comfort whilst playing with trends. I like to look good but I also have three children which means I don’t have as much time as I’d like to ‘put myself together’. In the UK I spent a lot of my time cold, but here, although I do get cold in the winter months it’s nowhere near as bad. My summer clothes are getting very well utilised but the jeans, jumpers, hoodies, boots – not so much. Take for example the school run.

I’ve switched from jeans, a hoodie, trainers and a tote bag to a pair of shorts, a simple tee and sandals with a basket bag. Add a pair of sunglasses and I’ve completed a look that feels and looks great with little effort.

There have been so many positives that I actually wasn’t expecting fashion to be one of those, but it has been, getting dressed, actually showing my outfits rather than them hiding under a coat has added to the happiness I’ve felt since moving here.

ith an increased demand for exquisite design within the superyacht world, Marie Soliman and Albin Berglund founded Njord

by Bergman Design House alongside Sarah Colbon, one of the most connected and knowledgeable women in yachting.

Njord by Bergman Design House is celebrating completing its latest project, a refit 56m Benetti Galaxy using the highest levels of eco-friendly design and technique.

Galaxy was completed after a recordbreaking five-month refit. It now includes: a private nightclub, multi-sensory saloon, meditation and wellness space, a cinema room and private music studio, touch-andgo helipad, and a private party deck.

What was the brief?

Galaxy’s concept came from our clients’ love of life, entertainment, and creativity. The love of out-of-world experiences and the Burning Man community, Galaxy was to become their very own spaceship. A platform that could be multifunctional, a place to celebrate life and become a permanent home for them.

Personally, my favourite feature is the ‘wow’ experience of the main salon that turns into a private nightclub. During the day, it serves as a place for meditation space and a lounge to gather friends and watch movies. It’s a

What sets the Galaxy superyacht apart?

Galaxy is no longer just another white superyacht gracing the ocean along the French Riviera, she has been transformed into the private owners’ own floating universe, a home which encapsulates their lifestyle and a design that has never been done before on board a yacht of this kind.

Galaxy is now a destination, an entertainment platform, a design marvel that touches all your body’s senses and excites and embraces you with its energy during each step you take onboard.

How did you incorporate natural elements into the design?

Galaxy features a host of intriguing and functional finishes throughout. Beautiful stones and coloured glass create visual spectacles, whilst bespoke fabrics and veneers add to the yacht’s individual character. Natural components such as rock crystal and entirely sustainable textiles are used throughout. The wood used in the flooring was specifically chosen to simulate the sensation of waves beneath the feet and to heighten the senses. Every bespoke piece of furniture on board is made of natural materials, helping achieve the owners’ vision.

What challenges were faced?

Our main challenge was working through a

pandemic, travelling when restrictions were on and trying to get suppliers to deliver on time during Brexit, but we got through all of this and she is truly a marvel of design - she is a new yacht with an even bigger energy.

Additional commentary on the project?

Galaxy took only five months to refit, as opposed to the usual 18 months. The refit was broken down into phases. This allowed the client enjoy their new yacht while Njord

Phase one of the project saw the addition of new rugs, artwork, exterior seating, cushions and a general up-styling of the interior so the client could enjoy a summer season onboard whilst living in a space that felt more like home. This allowed the owner to live in the space and give feedback to Njord first-hand on which areas they found most comfortable and which they used less, all of which helped the second full refit phase.

Every piece placed on board during phase one flowed into phase two, ensuring nothing was wasted. Once the concept was agreed, a full interior refit of the main guest areas took place alongside exterior styling, giving the yacht a new lease of life.

Together with the trust and can-do attitude of the owners, the Monaco Marine shipyard and the formidable crew, Galaxy has done just that.

very special place, one I’ve never experienced on a yacht before now. The art piece by Joseph Klibansky of The Thinker is the main inspiration for this space. Dylan Cole, whose work features in Disney blockbusters such as Avatar, designed the incredible wall covering. It is the first time he has ever worked on a yacht. With everything in the space created like a piece of art, it’s truly an out-of-world experience.

A contemporary, family-run hotel perfectly framed by sand dunes and pine trees, its famous golf course, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is rated as one of the world’s finest.

The 18 hole links course was designed by world renowned landscape architect Arthur Hills and often hosts famous faces. A big highlight of the course is the back to back par 3’s on the back nine, the 14th & 15th which both require quality golf shots.

It’s time for a new generation of electric vehicles – with elegance says David Traver Adolphus

E

lectric vehicles have been, let’s face it, traditionally terrible-looking. With maximum aerodynamic efficiency first and looks a distant last, they have run the gamut from ‘Angular Pufferfish’ (Honda CUV) to Sack of Broken Glass (Tesla Cybertruck). Even new mainstream EVs, like a Toyota bZ4X or VW ID.4 are just fat, grille-less interpretations of existing crossovers, maybe with some fancy LED headlights or shiny cladding that a focus group thought was vaguely technological. A range-topping Tesla Model S is impressive but looks like it was drawn up 20 years ago.

Much like Cadillac, the Lexus ‘Electrified Sport’ is a concept in name only. It will become the electric successor to the legendary LFA. It takes classic long deck, short cockpit sports car proportions and plays with them in ways that would be impossible with an engine under the hood.

That cautious approach died this year. A few mainstream brands, like Kia with its fresh EV6, had started to break the mould, but were still working within a traditional design framework. An EV6 looks good, but it could also be mistaken for a small Range Rover.

Aside from the need to meet safety regulations, and have wheels and passengers, there’s no reason EVs need to look like existing cars, which automakers once knew but long since forgot. If you look at, say, Paul Arzens’ L’Œuf électrique from 1938, it was built completely around the passenger, a literally clear egg with all the mechanicals tucked away in the back.

It may have taken another 84 years and the eve of widespread EV adoption, but

Lincoln brought out one of the most daring electric concepts of the year, the Model L100. The boring name indicates it’s a 100th anniversary model, a fullyautonomous luxury vehicle that wouldn’t have looked out of place at the Turin show in 1968. The canopy and doors open like a flower to reveal a modular cockpit, where the seats can be configured for front and rear passengers to face each other over a table.

There are many more vehicles on the way, but we’ve picked out six of the most interesting ones to show the range of possibilities when designers start to free themselves from traditional ideas of what a car should look like.

Audi has teased its ‘actishpere’ concept, the fourth of four shapeshifting cars with elements that will make it into production. The actisphere changes its wheelbase – gets longer or shorter – depending on whether it’s in coupe or roadster form.

Direct competitors Cadillac introduced their Celestiq concept in July, but not only does it have many production-ready features, it’s recently been spotted testing.

Cadillac will actually build something very much like the long hatchback, vaguely proportioned like a Lamborghini Espada, in the next few years.

Volvo’s Polestar 6 roadster is pugnacious and angular, especially with its geometric roof up. It recalls classic sports cars like Aston-Martin or a Datsun Z car in proportions but takes advantage of the electric architecture to reshape body lines.

atherine is an interior designer with over 20 years’ experience working with a luxury clientele, from bankers to art collectors, hotels and private villas. She has a predilection for bizarre shapes, the bello and the simple, space and proportion; and attaches importance to materials and texture.

Catherine divides her time between Lisbon and Paris, her mother’s home town. She studied and fell in love with the city of lights as a child and still loves it.

“From a very young age, France had a huge influence on me, every time I spend there, even for just a couple of days, is always so refreshing and brings me a continued source of inspiration.”

Her firm is based in Lisbon, in a historical building with an amazing view of the Tagus River. Her marvellous studio full of history and charm is a treasure trove, serving as a showroom for the different pieces, stunning fabrics and exquisite wallpapers.

“No two clients have the same lives, tastes or dreams, just as no two interiors have the same light, proportions, history or personality. And sometimes clients don’t even know their style or the style they are looking for! Through experience and conversations with clients we perceive and trace the client’s style and needs. Catherine’s Top Tips

Petite Patterns In order to play with the space, to create different moods, we can just change pillow covers. Pillows are inexpensive, small and perfect for adding a pop of colour and adding some fun to the space. Play with different patterns and colours. My insider tip is to always place a trio: plain (no pattern), geometric pattern (repeated or striped) and ‘free’ pattern, such as flowers, large branches, birds.

For example, a dark green velvet cover will evoke images of evergreen trees, starry skies, and snowfall, preparing your living room to match the changing landscape outside.

For the summer season, a raw linen nude cover, will give a lighter and summery atmosphere to the space, and it will be much more comfortable to the touch during the warm season.

Wonderful Wallpaper Nothing packs more of a punch than wallpaper. Grasscloth wallpaper is one of my favourite options for instantly elevating any room. It creates a more layered space and brings an element of intimate cosiness with its unique texture, and a vacation / beach vibe to the space. It’s simple, textural, and so very elegant.

One of the common mistakes is using a wallpaper or a solid colour on just one wall. It shortens the space, creates a unique focus, and brings no style!

In a room, wallpaper should be used on every wall, or, if it is to be used only on one wall as an accent, it should be inside a frame. This way you will have a more finished look, and it won’t look like you ran out of paper!

How to mix your woods Mixing different types of wood in a space has to have a lot of balance!

If your furniture is sitting directly on your hardwood floors, a good way to break this up is a great area rug or, you can opt for chairs that are fully upholstered, including the legs.

On a dining table, for example, it is not advisable to mix the table and chairs with different woods. If you have a wooden table, you can choose painted chairs, with a decapé or even upholstered.

Don’t go too matchy As in fashion, we shouldn’t buy everything to match.

The ‘matchy-matchy’ interior design to describe a space that is perfectly and painfully matched is over.

The goal of creating a beautiful space is to make it look slightly unintentional. Your interior colours do not have to match, but they should look good together. For example, within the same style, you can combine the same type of patterns in different colours. The space will surely be more appealing and unique!

Space-defining rugs There are plenty of reasons to have an area rug in a living room, bedroom, or other living space. Area rugs provide comfort, warmth, and decorative interest (colour, pattern, texture). And they can create a frame to define a space, and to increase it.

An area rug should fit under all of the key furniture pieces in a room. For instance, a rug should go far enough under a couch that at least the couch’s front legs can be on the rug. The

other furniture in the room, like the armchairs, or a second couch, have to be able to also fit on the rug. It will visually make the living area much larger. In the same space, you can use a combination of a plain rug, either fur or natural, seagrass type, and a patterned Persian rug under a desk or armchair area. This will balance the space and bring harmony.

Another favourite is the Musée de la Vie Romantique, also known as the Museum of Romantic Life whose garden alone is reason to visit. Located at the foot of Montmartre, the collection includes artefacts that once belonged to George Sand and Chopin, both guests of this former home. For fellow fans of Impressionism there’s the incomparable Musée D’Orsay set in a former train station.

ith cultural curiosity part of my DNA, it only made sense that I married an Italian and settled in Paris. This ethereal city oozing culture and creativity provides limitless inspiration. One of many reasons I’m enamoured with Paris is how well it supports local and sustainable designers.

Favourites include timeless womenswear brand Koshka Paris.

Their Matros jeans are a staple in every Parisian woman’s wardrobe.

Swedish-born Anika Lena Skarstrom is an established designer whose elegantly deconstructed separates lure Parisians from all twenty districts to her Haut Marais shop. Creating colour-infused knitwear, Erotokritos is another independent label that has proven a vibrant addition to my clothing collection.

I regularly pop in to the Picasso Museum, and for a fashion fix there’s the Museum Yves Saint Laurent Paris. The 18th-century Rodin Museum along with its sculpture garden captivates all the senses.

Living in the 3rd arrondissement, I’m a short stroll away from a number of historic parks and gardens including former royal residences Place des Vosges which leads to the 17th-century Hotel de Sully garden, and Palais Royal. I’m forever enchanted by their beauty and elegance.

While Paris is filled with culinary greatness in both sweet and savoury forms, a few new dining haunts top my list. Tucked away in the 20th arrondissement is innovative bistro Fripon. Talented chef Pauline Séné concocts a locally-sourced menu accented by flowers within a softly romantic ambiance. On the sweet side, chocolatier Jacques Genin continues to satisfy my cravings.

TRAVEL / My Place The Jardim da Estrela is the green heart of Estrela. I live just up the road from this beautiful park and love taking a detour through it whenever I leave the house. With its tropical plants and flowers, its little cafés and its patches of grass in which to read and enjoy the sun, it’s a really peaceful place and a perfect location for portrait photoshoots!

Estrela is a really perfect mix between colourful walls and Portuguese tiles.

I love to walk around and admire this explosion of colours, shapes and decorations that stay up all year long. One of my favourite places is what I call the ‘rainbow bridge’, on Avenida Infante Santo, because of all its colourful stripes. A perfect background for shoots.

I

ended up in Estrela by chance, a year ago. As a photographer, I’m always looking for things that no one sees: architecture details, shadow patterns, potential shooting locations and nice backgrounds. I found a lot of interesting places in Estrela that inspire me and feed my creativity.

Walking around my neighbourhood is always a great and peaceful feeling. Relaxing in the park to read, jumping onto the tram to cross the city and discovering new hidden places like coffee shops or little stores are some of the things I really enjoy about Estrela.

The walk down from Estrela to Santos, in addition to having a stunning view of the river, leads through small and quiet alleys imbued with a strong sense of community, where residents line the streets with plants and furniture, providing a welcoming home to the cats of the area.

The Basilica da Estrela is a magnificent monument from the 18th century overlooking the iconic tram 28. At the turn of each hour, its twin bell towers ring with a powerful melody which echoes through the peaceful streets.

Chasing Rabbits is a record store and coffee shop on the outskirts of Estrela. The lovely owners and their beautiful dog, Grace, have created an awesome environment with good food, great music and exciting events. It’s my go to work spot and it also recently hosted my first solo photography exhibition, showcasing some of my best concert shots.

Inland, you will find incredible hikes and tracks hidden amongst the dense subtropical flora.

Reminiscent of Hawaii, Madeira is definitely an exotic alternative to mainland Portugal. Drive up the winding road to Santana, not for the faint hearted. Hike along, following the old aqueducts, affording amazing views. Stop half way along the 40 minute walk at the Sao Roque de Failal snack bar for a restorative tosta mista and end the walk at the viewpoint where tiny birds will come and greet you, and even eat from your hand. Be prepared to encounter some thick fog, and fresher temperatures, giving the place a mystic quality.

Madeira is known for its volcanic, exotic and green terrain. Visitors don’t come to the island for its sandy beaches – although Porto Santo nearby has its fair share – and that’s just fine when you’re lucky enough to live in the Algarve, Cascais or Lisbon. The rugged island is all about perilous cliffs, pebbled beaches and rainforest hikes, making it the perfect adventurous escape!

he archipelago of Madeira, made up of four islands off the north west coast of Africa is an autonomous region of Portugal, which makes it extremely easy to get to for anyone based on the mainland. Forget about passport checks and interminable security lines, it’s such a pleasure to hop onto a flight without all the hassle that can go with it. Small caveat for necessary mask wearing, although that seems to be fairly relaxed these days too! So, here’s one way to get a subtropical experience without the hassle factor.

TRAVEL / Madeira

Another way to get great island views is by braving the heights of the cable car taking you up to the Monte Tropical Gardens, also worth a stroll to admire the weird and wonderful plants, not to mention the Japanese inspired gardens. Stop by the Patio das Babosas for lunch with a view but remember to book ahead. The food and setting are worth it. Then, to get back down, try the famous Carreiros do Monte Toboggan ride. This age-old tradition in Madeira involves sitting in what can only be described as an oversized basket for two and being pushed down the street at great speed by two burly men in straw boaters, who, thankfully, seem to know what they are doing. A great thrill for the kids!

Another must do is going out on the catamarans to catch sight of the dolphins or the whales. Observing the pods of dolphins is a very special moment, despite the fresh winds and unexpected shower from the waves at the front of the catamaran.

WHERE TO SLEEP

WHERE TO EAT One of the best things about Madeira is the incredible choice of restaurants. Whether you want to eat Italian at Basilico, where you can enjoy freshly baked pizzas, lasagnes or indeed very tasty risottos along with some good Portuguese wine in a cool contemporary setting – or if you prefer some local flavour, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Another favourite was the Quinta do Furão perched on a cliff top at Achada do Gramacho in Santana, on the northeast coast. Aside from astounding views and a great kids playground, the Quinta makes its own bread in traditional ovens. There is nothing quite like warm, fresh bread and its delicious aroma. The menu is traditional, too, with heaps of meat and seafood. The skewers and the shank, both a real hit.

Another foodie treat? The Mercado dos Lavradores, or city market, where you’ll find all manner of exotic fruit, a fish market and perfect spot for coffee on the rooftop. Down on street level, stop by the Peixaria do Mercado where you will be treated to amazing seafood dishes including the best seared tuna, zinging ceviche, octopus salad and delicate grilled sea bass – all served by the super-friendly staff.

There is a host of hotels on the island, most seem to be part of the locally-based Pestana group. There is a big choice of large hotels geared for families and tourists in search of a good time, activities and entertainment. There are also smaller, more intimate places with a local flavour like the Quinta do Furao or, on the top end of the scale you’ll find the Reid’s Palace, a Belmond property, A ‘grande dame’ of the island, it is its oldest hotel and has been host to luminaries like Imperatrice Sissi of Austria and Winston Churchill, who was a regular.

Reid’s is definitely chic. Perched on the cliffside with age-old mature gardens, and a grandiose aura, it’s just the place to put your feet up and exhale. The antique furniture, the views, the beautiful gardens, its illustrious part and the sleek staff, not to mention the lovely food make it a wonderful option for a luxury stay on Madeira. RCA

A quintessential address in Quinta do Lago, keeping up with the times.

his is definitely my kind of restaurant.

As much to do with the menu as with the setting. Having the water on either side of us is definitely something special. Look to one side and you’ll see Quinta‘s famous Lake, complete with a 50th anniversary celebratory extra ‘golf hole’! Look to the other side, and there is the beautiful Ria Formosa.

grilled cherry tomatoes. It’s so simple but actually so delicious it doesn’t leave space for much more. However, we do squeeze in a passion fruit cheesecake, which is excellent.

It’s the perfect place to catch sundown and kick back in an environment which is both chic and relaxed. This is a tricky balance to achieve, being both friendly and warm and laid-back, while still staying elegant.

When we visit it’s the early dinner service so the place is packed with families. It’s cosy and informal, which suits me just fine. The happy vibe coming from all the families on holiday is a good thing to be absorbing! At 6 p.m. it’s the perfect temperature with a light breeze. The staff is very upbeat and smiling – perhaps the wholesome atmosphere rubbing off on them too? Either way, it’s great to see.

“IT’S THE PERFECT PLACE TO CATCH SUNDOWN AND KICK BACK IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHICH IS BOTH CHIC AND RELAXED.” On the menu, we pick the usual suspects – a tuna tartare which is fantastically savoury with a hint of sweet orange. It’s smooth and the tuna is definitely the top grade. I love the perfect blend of salty soy and sweetness . We also try the cod croquettes that have been freshly deep fried, with an excellent tartar sauce. The capers add that perfect crunchy sharp twist that I’m a total sucker for. As for the details, the ‘couvert’ bread basket is moreish, while the house rosé wine is a QMF, a firm favourite.

Can I just go back to the view? Being surrounded by nature is definitely something special and the decor is utterly relaxing too.

The recent refurbishment is all about that beach chic vibe. The pale grey chairs and wooden tables blend perfectly with the soft blue tones and greens all around us. The terrace is covered by a forest of white parasols, somehow rather snazzy in itself.

For mains, we have a great steak with homemade mashed potatoes with a hint of onion and a delicious grilled seabass with lemon butter sauce, a few new potatoes and

ho doesn’t love a rooftop restaurant? Especially one that has just been opened, stylishly designed with great taste and offering unimaginable views over the ocean.

Definitely the perfect place for sundown drinks and a lovely Italian meal, Paper Moon at the new W Algarve resort is without a doubt the hot new address in town.

Although I’m not usually a pizza fan I hear the restaurant has a special pizza oven that cooks extra quickly so I’m quite tempted to go back another time and try it out. That is, if I can bring myself not to order everything else on the menu! RCA. Find out more at @papermoonalgarve

With Italian being one of my favourites, it was tough call choosing anything from the menu.

Every single choice looked like my kind of dish.

I hesitated a long time between the fresh burrata, the beef carpaccio and the frito misto.

The fact that we were enjoying the view with a glass of pink bubbly made the process even slower. In the end, because I was so torn, I decided to split several starters and only opt for a Secondi Piatti, bypassing the Primi Piatti.

“PAPER MOON AT THE NEW W ALGARVE RESORT IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE HOT NEW ADDRESS IN TOWN.” Ordering all three of the dishes I was keen to try was the right move. The burrata was deliciously creamy, as it should be. The frito misto was crunchy, tasty and fresh with a lovely tartar sauce. The beef carpaccio was light and sophisticated. I definitely have a penchant for Italian flavours, and Paper Moon certainly delivers.

For the mains it was a struggle to choose again. Will it be the wild mushroom risotto?

The parpadelle pomodore panna e bacon? Or the homemade ravioli e crema tartufata. I’m a sucker for truffles, so I had to order that and I’m so glad I did. Rich and creamy, a real delight.

The entire experience was made all the sweeter thanks to a great wine pairing. First we had the Donna Maria Viognier 2021 white wine, so clear and fresh to accompany the starters. Then for the main course, we switched to a red from the Douro Valley, the Vale De Escadas 2020 Reserva. A perfect match with the savoury truffle.

When it came to dessert, we’d been instructed not to miss the panna cotta.

Because we always respect good advice we went ahead and shared one. The crumble was deliciously crumbly. The panna cotta is creamy and sweet, but not too much. It was a perfect end to a fantastic meal.
