In the heart of the Kalahari, with it’s rolling red sand dunes, on the banks of the seasonal Auob River, nestles the palm tree oasis, Auob Lodge. The lodge is 6 km away from Gochas and approx. 180 km from the Mata-Mata Gate, ideal for a day trip to the Kgalagadi National Park. Auob Lodge is known for a true Kalahari Experience, nature in its purest form, 4x4 sundowner game drives, tranquil sunsets, optional open-air dinners on the red sand dunes, whilst game roams freely on the wide horizon.

Derived from the Tswana word Kgala, meaning "the great thirst", or Kgalagadi, meaning "a waterless place� , the Kalahari has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent surface water. Drainage is by dry valleys, seasonally inundated pans, and the large salt pans of the Makgadikgadi Pan in Botswana and Etosha Pan in Namibia. The only permanent river, the Okavango, flows into a delta in the Northwest, forming marshes that are rich in wildlife. Ancient dry riverbeds called omuramba’s traverse the central northern reaches of the Kalahari and provide standing pools of water during the rainy season. A semi-desert, with huge tracts of excellent grazing after good rains, the Kalahari supports lots of animals and plants.
