Bell & Evans was established in 1894 by two chicken farmers, Howard H. Bell and Carlton C. Evans of Camden, New Jersey.

They sold “fancy poultry” to high-end butcher shops throughout northern New Jersey and New York City and prided themselves on supplying premium, quality protein, never commodity.

By 1958, the Bell & Evans brand was well established and there was a great demand. Bell & Evans began a partnership with another chicken producer, Farmer’s Pride of Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania, to grow and co-package chickens following their superior standards under the Bell & Evans name. It was around this same time – 1959 – that Scott Sechler was born. Scott grew up helping his dad on the family farm and started raising his own flocks of chickens at the early age of seven. He questioned traditional practices along the way and

decided that he was going to raise chickens his way – a better, more humane and healthier way – and set out to do just that.

At age 16, Scott bought his first trailer to haul chickens and was selling his birds in Canada. In 1984, when Farmer’s Pride owner Clarence Manbeck retired, Scott, at the young age of 24, purchased the company. Two years later, when the Bell family was ready to retire from the chicken business, Scott purchased the Bell & Evans brand and merged the two companies together. With his new acquisitions, he began changing the way chickens are raised in the U.S. A lot has changed since 1894, but our commitment to producing the best chicken possible has not wavered. Every detail of our chicken production – breed, hatchery, chicken houses, transportation, processing methods, facilities, machinery, packaging, and more – is carefully examined so we can continuously improve. Quality, not profit, drives every business decision we make. That’s why Bell & Evans is the most innovative and influential chicken producer in America – and perhaps even the world!

The future is bright for Bell & Evans! We’re celebrating 125 years as America’s oldest branded chicken company, and we’re very proud of our longevity and innovations in the industry. I am fortunate to have led our familyowned business for 35 years and counting, and I’m equally excited about preparing my children, Scott Jr. and Margo, to succeed me as Bell & Evans’ 5th generation one day.

For about as long as I can remember, demand for Bell & Evans product is greater than we can produce. That’s incredible for a premium brand like ours when there are so many cheaper commodity options. It says a lot about the quality of our products and the trust we generated with our customers and end consumers. We

are ready to begin construction on our new harvesting plant in Spring 2020, which will help us keep up with demand and grow with you. Be ready!

Today, consumers are more informed than ever about the food they eat. This works to our advantage. superior START From the breed of chicken we raise to our first-of-its-kind Organic Hatchery and even the specifications of our chicken houses, every detail of our process is carefully examined and controlled to protect the integrity of our brand.

We raise 100% premium birds, no commodity.

BREEDER OPERATIONS

It all starts at our pullet and breeder farms where we raise male and female chickens that produce our hatching eggs. Managing our breeder operations means we have control over the actual breed of chicken we raise for meat.

We spent many years developing and testing our own proprietary breed, Das Klassenbester™, a higher-welfare breed of chickens.

HATCHERY

We opened the World’s First Organic Certified, Humane-AnimalWelfare-Focused Chicken Hatchery. Here, eggs from our breeder farms are received. We’ve replaced harmful chemicals, like formaldehyde, with organic sanitizers, and none of our eggs are injected with antibiotics.

As chicks hatch, they have immediate access to organic-certified feed, fresh water and light. Our chicks are never handled by machinery. They travel from our Hatchery to our Farms in the same trays as they hatched, with feed available during their short journey.

HOUSES

Our Brand No other poultry brand in America shares our longevity in the industry or dedication to producing only premium products. Therefore, it is important for us to manage every step of our chicken production to ensure the health and well-being of our chickens and the integrity of our products.

Our farms are located, on average, less than an hour’s drive from our Hatchery for a short commute. Fresh litter awaits every new flock. Houses have cement floors and curbs to prevent pests from entering and allow for a thorough clean-out between every flock. From day one, chicks have full access to the entire house, and enrichments are provided to keep birds active. Our houses have natural daylight to promote the birds’ health, and organic chickens have access to the outdoors.

superior STANDARDS

Organic

To be deemed “organic,” food must be Non-GMO and free of pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones. But with Bell & Evans organic poultry, you get so much more than just what’s standard.

We’re certified organic by Pennsylvania Certified Organic, a USDA-accredited certifier that performs regular on-site inspections. We also voluntarily participate in annual audits for animal welfare and Safe Quality Food practices. Some companies purchase cheap, questionably “organic” grains from China, Turkey, India and other countries. Our chickens dine on organic feed made of corn and soy, grown right here in the United States. This diet— plus our low-stress, humane living conditions— keep our chickens healthy without the need for growth hormones, antibiotics or other additives.

Raised Without Antibiotics

Some poultry producers say their chickens are antibiotic-free. This means the chickens are antibiotic-free when they’re sold. Many of these chickens still receive antibiotics sometime during their life.

100% Air Chilled

Thirty years ago, our leader had a vision of a processing plant that would set the standard for all chicken production facilities.

Scott scoured the globe for manufacturing processes that would produce the best chicken possible. In North America, most producers that claim to use “Air Chill” really use a hybrid method that combines chlorinated water chill and air chill. In 2005, he used the latest technologies and the best equipment to build the nation’s first 100% Air Chilled facility.

With conventional chilling systems, chickens absorb up to 12% of their body weight in added chlorinated water. This water “weeps” out of the meat and is trapped in the “diaper” you find in most fresh chicken packaging. Our 100% Air Chilled method eliminates the need for chlorinated ice water, so chickens’ natural juices never get diluted or replaced. But that’s not the only benefit.

How It Works

Our 100% Air Chilled system contains three cooling chambers. Each is closely monitored to maintain a specific temperature and humidity.

The birds traverse through these chambers on over two miles of track.

It takes them almost three hours to move through the system. This slow chilling process improves the tenderness and overall quality of the product.

Bell & Evans is the first company to raise 100% of our flocks without antibiotics— since 1998— from the egg throughout the chicken’s entire lifespan. In fact, we haven’t had to treat a flock with antibiotics for nearly a decade. It all starts with what we do and do not feed our chickens. From the moment they hatch in our Organic Certified, Animal Welfare Focused Hatchery, Bell & Evans chicks enjoy a diet of corn, extruded and expeller-pressed soybeans, vitamins and minerals. In addition to our feed, we’ve also pioneered a clean and stress-free environment. This keeps our chickens’ immune systems strong and eliminates the need for antibiotics.

HUMANE ANIMAL WELFARE Bell & Evans’ humane animal welfare standards are an ever-evolving set of best practices in ethical treatment. We strive to be better today than we were yesterday and keep the chickens’ well-being at the forefront of everything we do. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Humane Society of the United States, and even Temple Grandin agree that Bell & Evans continually raises the benchmark for the entire poultry industry.

As part of our commitment to humane treatment, we pioneered SLOW INDUCTION ANESTHESIA (SIA). Our chickens are slowly rendered unconscious in the safety of the drawers they are transported in from the farm. They’re never dumped onto belts.

This eliminates chickens’ pain, stress, fear and suffering. Many producers hide behind third-party certifications. We support the Global Animal Partnership and adhere to Safe Quality Food Institute guidelines, but we choose not to participate in third party paid certifications, which aren’t inclusive of the chickens’ entire life cycle. The Bell & Evans Humane Animal Welfare Standard is the most comprehensive, fully integrated program in the industry today. We set the standards by going above and beyond what is required.

BPA FREE. BPA is a synthetic compound found in many plastics, especially food containers. Traces can sometimes be found in the food you eat. Our chickens don’t eat any chemicals or junk. Why should you?

FREEZER-SAFE. You can pop this package right into your freezer without fear of freezer burn or leaks!

Our Way

Our live chicken hauling system is specially designed for the chickens’ welfare. At the farm, the chickens are placed in the drawers of a module, then loaded onto the truck. The trailers have roofs, side curtains to protect them from inclement weather, and plenty of space and airflow in and between modules. All trailers are designed with air suspension. At the plant, the drawers slide out of the modules and travel through Slow Induction Anesthesia where the birds are put to sleep before they are hung on a processing line.

Chicken growers can save a lot of money by composting the chicken manure in the barns for many flocks back-to-back.

They add chemicals to control the ammonia released from the manure, and antibiotics to keep the chickens healthy. The result: inhumane living conditions and increased mortality rates. The U.S. poultry industry is one of the only countries in the world with this practice.

Our Way

We minimize chances of Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli growth by mandating clean chicken houses and strict biosecurity procedures. Our chicken houses have cement floors that are cleaned, disinfected and applied with brand new litter between every flock.

PREMIUM FEED Their Way

All kinds of rendered animal wastes and used cooking oil wind up in animal least-cost diets. This includes second-hand salt, bakery by-products, feather meal and other undesirables.

Our Way

We don’t use by-products of any kind. We use only corn, soybeans and natural supplements including oregano oil, cinnamon and yucca root.
