Ten (or more) Things to do in Lewisburg this Summer
BY RICK HIDUK
The lure of historic Lewisburg has grown well beyond its reputation as a college town and home to Bucknell University. Nestled along the West Branch Susquehanna River, the county seat of Union County boasts a natural beauty accentuated by classic 19thcentury architecture, especially in the area of Market Street, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This, plus a bevy of antique shops, diverse local restaurants, art and performance venues, and access to the Susquehanna River, Lewisburg grows in prominence as a destination for a day trip, weekend, or a long-term stay.

1Plan
Your Stay. Popular chain hotels dot the landscape west of State Route 15, which dissects the borough from north to south. Those looking for something a little closer to downtown's charm should check out the Lewisburg Hotel on Market Street.
2Eat
Your Way Across Town. Downtown eateries to put on your itinerary include Gram’s Eatery on N. 3rd Street; Brasserie Louis, Brendan’s Town Tavern, Bull Run Tap House, Elizabeth’s American Bistro, Saffron Restaurant on Market Street; LA Primavera Italiano Ristorante & Pizzeria on Old Turnpike Road; Street of the Shops on St. Mary Street; and Matty’s Sporthouse Grill on Walter Drive. And be sure to treat your sweet tooth at Purity Candy, a family-owned confectionery on Market Street that opened in 1907.
3Go for a Walk. Lewisburg is a great walking town. Details of the Notable Architectural Tour of Downtown Lewisburg can be found at visitcentralpa.org. Another unique pathway is the self-guided Lewisburg Mural Trail, including a section of Cherry Alley between North Third and Fourth Streets known as Modern Art Alley. Look for the White Pine Alley Mural and the Donald Heiter Community Center, a memorial to a past police chief with its own artistic embellishment. There are 18 painted rail abutments in Piers Art Park.

Shops in downtown Lewisburg have their doors open for you seven days a week throughout the summer.
4Bike or Hike. Lewisburg also serves as a beginning point of the Buffalo Valley Rail Trail, which stretches through the countryside paralleling Route 45, the major east-west corridor between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg. The trail is wheelchair accessible, dog-friendly, and suitable for walking, mountain biking, and inline skating.
5Go
Antiquing. For those who believe that everything old is new again, treat yourself to a stroll of a different kind by visiting one or more of Lewisburg’s many antique shops. Options include Rollermills Antique Mall, Antiques at 221, Lewisburg Antique and Consignment Mall, Silver Moon Antique Mall and Flea Market, and Street of Shops.
6Go
Back to School.
Bucknell University’s beautiful 450acre campus is replete with special venues and activities open to the public, including its own self-guided walking and driving tours accessible at bucknell.edu, where you can also book a student-led tour of the facilities.
7Let
Lewisburg Entertain You. After a stroll or drive around campus, take in a show at the Weis Center for Performing Arts or the Samek Gallery. The Lewisburg Arts Council (LAC) has a gallery at 15 North Water Street where jazz, folk, and blues music is offered every fourth Thursday. Live music is on the schedule at the CommUnity Zone’s Listening Room on Market Street every second Wednesday. The Historic Campus Theatre on Market Street hosts a free Family Film Series on Tuesday mornings.
8Enjoy the River. Have a picnic in Soldier’s Park, situated next to the Susquehanna River at the end of Market Street. Bic’s Water Sports and Outdoor Adventures in nearby Milton will put you on the river in a canoe, kayak, a paddle board. Also in Milton is the Fence Drive-In, a car hop restaurant that offers spectacular views of the river and the Susquehanna River Bridge from about one mile south.
9Dive Into History. The Dale-Engle-Walker Historical Site is a house and farm built in 1793 on Strawbridge Road and bequeathed in 2001 to the Union County Historical Society (UCHS), which restored it to tell the story of the three families who resided there over the years. The 1789 Milne Log House was moved there in 2019. The former Packwood House

Experience Johnstown Heritage, Heart, and a Creative Spirit
BY MORGAN CHRISTOPHER
As our country readies for next year's 250th birthday celebration, Pennsylvania’s rich history offers travelers a wide selection of destinations, events, and attractions to discover our legacy; the stories that combine to create our shared heritage.
Nestled amidst the beautiful scenery of the Allegheny Mountains, Johnstown, and surrounding towns offer visitors a destination where the poignant story recounting the famous catastrophic flood of 1889. Combine that with the history of Pennsylvania’s shared industrial, transportation, and multi-cultural past and you have a destination alive with heritage, arts, and culture.
Start your visit with a short drive to the Johnstown Flood National
Memorial, the US Park Service site commemorating the spot where the South Fork Dam failed on May 31, 1889, unleashing the torrent that claimed over 2,200 lives. In addition to the interactive exhibits and educational programs offered throughout the year, a guided “Path of the Flood” van tour where visitors learn about the events that happened in each town as well as information about the damage sustained along with stories of the lives affected. A Moment of Tranquility at the end of the tour serves as a remembrance opportunity to honor those lost.
Outdoor recreation fans may want to explore the area by spending time on the “Path of the Flood Trail,” a biking and hiking feature tracing the path the floodwaters followed as the torrential waters headed toward Johnstown.
Children’s Museum gives kids a chance to explore their creativity and imagination, while in other Center spaces, guests can enjoy experiential exhibits about the flood, Johnstown’s transportation history, and multi-cultural roots. The "America Through Immigrant Eyes" exhibit illustrates the experiences of immigrants who arrived between 1880 and 1914 and established the vibrant ethnic neighborhoods that shaped Johnstown. "Forging a Nation: Johnstown Iron & Steel" is an exhibit sharing the city's significant role in the steel industry, from its early beginnings to the present day.
In a time when most people communicate with smartphones and rely on the latest technologies, the nearby Wagner-Ritter House and Garden provides a journey back to a vastly different time and place for visitors to experience. Unlike many museum house tours highlighting grand architectural estates, this restored home reflects the life of modest, working-class people who spent their lives in “the shadow of the mills” in Johnstown’s Cambria City. Another neighborhood attraction, The Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, celebrates the cultural diversity of the community through arts - music, dance, food, crafts, dress, and literary traditions. The Art Works facility immediately adjoins an art gallery showcasing the work of local artists and artisans. Throughout the year, classes, workshops, and unique events are offered
Take in other nearby attractions to create an itinerary that offers you a look into the area’s dynamic industrial and transportation heritage. No visit would be complete without experiencing the Johnstown Inclined Plane, the "World's Steepest Vehicular Inclined Plane". The visitor's center and waiting
Living History Day is one of the events that visitors can attend at the Allegheny Portage Railroad that honors the historic significance of the site in US transportation history.
Home to interactive exhibits and local attractions like the Johnstown Children’s Museum, the Johnstown Heritage discovery bustles with activity for visitors throughout the year.
The grounds of the Johnstown Flood National Memorial allow visitors a beautiful setting to commemorate the losses incurred in Cambria County.

ennsylvania is a haven for outdoor recreation. With 124 state parks offering more than 300,000 acres of outdoor fun, there’s something to do year-round. Thirtyfive of the state parks have beaches where swimming is permitted.
Beltzville State Park in Lehighton, Carbon County, is a popular destination for family outings, especially during the summer. The park has a 525foot sand beach with a bathhouse with showers. Residents of eastern PA have long known about this hidden gem. It’s a favorite place to spend the day, enjoy a picnic, or grab some food at the concession stand, which is open daily, when the weather permits. Other water activities, like boating and fishing, are also allowed on Beltzville Lake.
Beltzville Lake has a maximum boating speed of 45 mph. Most types of recreational boats are permitted. Boaters should check with the park
office for questions regarding the kinds of watercraft permitted on the 949-acre lake. Boat rentals are available a short distance from the beach area. Rentals are available by appointment only and reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. Kayaks, stand-up boards, rafts, pedal boats, and pontoons are available for visitors to rent.
If fishing is your thing, the lake is stocked with fish, including Trout, striped bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, muskellunge and perch. The beach is a smoke-free zone, but for visitors who smoke there are designated areas where smoking is permitted.

Latrobe’s Great American Banana Split
BY WENDY ROYAL
Most people know Pennsylvania is famous for Philly cheesesteaks, whoopie pies, soft pretzels, and Hershey candy. Other notables include the Big Mac. Did you know the McDonald's staple was first made in 1967 by Uniontown franchise owner, Jim Delligatti?
My favorite foodie first is the banana split. In 1904, 23-year-old David Strickler worked the soda fountain at a Latrobe, PA drugstore. Experimenting with different ice cream creations, he came up with what is known today as the banana split. The delicious dessert was very popular with students from nearby Saint Vincent College, who spread the word about the treat. Within a few years, his ice cream concoction was popular nationwide. While he’ll probably never be as lauded as Latrobe natives Arnold Palmer and Fred Rogers, Strickler’s contribution is more than noteworthy. In 2013, it was made official when the National Ice Cream Retailers Association (NICRA) credited Latrobe as the birthplace of the banana split. Since
then, the Westmoreland County town has commemorated this triumph of culinary creativity with the Great American Banana Split Celebration. This year's event will be held downtown on August 23–24, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The event kicks off with a blood drive on Friday, with donors receiving a banana split for their contribution. The evening brings a more formal, yet festive, event with the Yellow Tie Gala,
held at the Latrobe Art Center. "We're always adding new events and different things to do. It’s just a lot of fun," stated Greater Latrobe-Laurel Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Briana Tomack.
Saturday starts off with the 5K Banana Run at 9 a.m. There are seven different age brackets, starting at age 6 through 60+. Whether you run or choose to walk, the route will take you through the historic downtown.
