hat is it about spring?

People just seem to be more optimistic and filled with anticipation. It’s the season for planting, pruning and planning.

We plant seeds with care in the hopes of reaping a bountiful harvest. It is in the same way that we sow seeds of kindness and friendship as we spend more time out of doors and in contact with our neighbors.

We prune our trees and shrubs to provide healthy growth.

Springtime is a good season to also prune those things that do not add to the richness of our lives.

And this is the season we plan.

Like the planning of our garden or landscape, we plan our family vacations, getaways and reunions.

It’s really no wonder that spring is the season of anticipation and optimism. We know those buds will produce the very leaves that will shade us during the hot summer and magnificently color our landscape in the fall.

If you’re planning an excursion, remember that there are so many interesting and fun experiences just a short drive away.

Here in Pennsylvania you can hike the Appalachian Trail in the morning and visit a worldclass museum in the evening, or you can take a ride on one of the country’s top roller coasters and be pampered at a five-star resort the same day.

So, choose the dates and then choose Pennsylvania. You’ll be glad you did.

Across Pennsylvania, there are numerous parks and historic sites and landmarks, as well as beautiful landscapes that are designated with a protected status by the NPS. 2016 will mark 100 years since the United States’ National Park Service was established, and there will be activities year-round,

I closed my eyes and my heart broke for the people who had no idea what was coming. It is another place in Pennsylvania’s past that holds much destruction and pain, a memorial for a horrific time that begged us all to consider our choices and ethics in business and pleasure. Every May the memorial commemorates the anniversary of the historic flood.

Beyond the tragic history of some of Pennsylvania’s national park sites, there are scenic and celebrated regions of American history,

and the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) boasts these qualities.

The National Scenic Trail, when completed, will be the longest trail in the United States, running from North Dakota to New York. In Pennsylvania, the trail will travel along an old Jeep trail, on dirt roads and past abandoned coal mines, a lime kiln, a historic gristmill, the Davis Hollow Cabin, the Old Stone House and a reclaimed strip mine, as well as some tunnels, which will require hikers to use flashlights.

Visitors may browse the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail in Pennsylvania on the water along the Susquehanna River Water Trail or by foot, boat or car at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage. There is a privilege and ownership I have felt about our national parks since I first began exploring them. I have visited nearly 20 national parks and sites, and I am always shocked by the beauty that lies in the park sites right here in Pennsylvania. 100 years of the National Park System is waiting for you in Pennsylvania in 2016 and beyond.

EMBRACING A RICH PAST

esidents of Tunkhannock in Wyoming County proudly call their picturesque river town “The Gateway to the Endless Mountains.”

The county seat is situated at the crossroads of commerce between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and Pennsylvania’s mountainous northern tier. Tunkhannock entices visitors off the beaten path with charming downtown and residential districts that seem instantly reminiscent of the history and heritage behind them.

In June, the Historic Tunkhannock Walking Tour will return, providing a portal to the town’s rich past and ongoing preservation efforts. Co-sponsored by the Wyoming County Cultural Center, Wyoming County Historical Society (WCHS), Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau (EMVB), and the PA Route 6 Alliance, the walking tours will take participants past more than two dozen homes, businesses, houses of worship and other historic venues.

vided the funding for the project.

With Tunkhannock currently enjoying a renaissance in both culture and commerce, Walking Tour project partners saw both an opportunity and a need to breathe new life into a former version of the tour. The heritage of the borough will be more accessible and relevant than ever thanks to the tour, which moved its base downtown to the restored Dietrich Theater, altered the course for safety, and will dig more deeply into the origins of the buildings.

“Tunkhannock has such a rich tapestry of history that it is important that we preserve not only the structures but the stories about the people who lived and worked in them,” said Mark Mitchell, Wyoming County Historical Society board president.

On West Tioga Street, for example, is the former home of Walter Tewksbury, prominent town dentist and 1900 winner of two Olympic gold medals in track and field. The Tewksburys lived in the home into the 1980s.

“Tunkhannock has one of the most intact historic districts that I’ve seen along Route 6,” stated Paula Zitzler, instructor of anthropology and archaeology at Penn State Altoona.

“There are lots of great, well-maintained properties concentrated among a few blocks.”

recently rendered itself as a clothing store, a youth center, and an upscale café, which offers al fresco dining in season.

“Tunkhannock has a unique reputation for an eclectic mix of businesses and restaurants throughout the shopping area,” said Nancy Parlo, TBPA board member. “Participants of the Historic Walking Tour will enjoy discovering all that Tunkhannock has to offer.”
